Jordan Waller

If you're traveling to the U.S. any time soon and you're a citizen of the United Kingdom or Europe, it's quite likely that you'll need to apply for an ESTA before you visit.

Short for Electronic System for Travel Authorization, applying for an ESTA might seem daunting if you've never done it before. Don't worry — we have you covered.

Below we break down everything you need to know about applying for an ESTA, from how much it will cost and approval times to when you should renew it and when you need to consider applying for one.

What is the ESTA 'visa'?

An ESTA is an automated part of the Visa Waiver Program that allows visitors from specific countries to visit the U.S. Visitors must be citizens of countries classed as part of the U.S. visa waiver list to be eligible for an ESTA application. Currently, 40 countries are included on the list, including the U.K. and much of Europe.

ESTA holders can visit the U.S. for a period of 90 days or less without the need to apply for a standard visa if their visit is either a vacation or a business trip.

ESTA was initially rolled out by the U.S. in 2008 to allow the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Borders Protection to use authorized databases to pre-screen visitors to the country. It also allows the easier identification of terrorists, criminals and banned flyers, and is designed to help prevent such people from entering the country. It can also help identify those who may be a risk for overstaying their visits.

Is an ESTA a visa?

No, an ESTA is not a traditional visa and instead is classed as a visa waiver. As such, the application process is much more straightforward than applying for a traditional visa, and eligible travelers can do so by filling out a short online application on ESTA's official website.

The form requires applicants to share basic personal information, travel history and other simple security questions. Applications are usually processed within 72 hours.

Who needs to apply for an ESTA?

esta time before travel

You'll need to apply for an ESTA if you are a citizen of a country classed as part of the U.S. visa waiver program, which includes the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, among others. You can view the full list of the 40 eligible countries on the DHS website .

If you are visiting the U.S. from one of these countries as part of a vacation or business trip that is set to last for 90 days or less — and you are arriving by either plane or cruise ship — you can apply for an ESTA.

If you already hold a visa for visiting the U.S., you do not need to also apply for an ESTA. Additionally, if you are only briefly stopping in the U.S. to catch a connecting flight or ship before moving on to your final destination, know that you will still be required to apply for an ESTA, regardless of how brief your stay is.

How much does an ESTA cost?

esta time before travel

The ESTA application fee is $21; you can pay this fee online after filling out your application form. The fee was increased from $14 in May 2023, and its current pricing will remain in effect until September 2027.

Valid payment methods include:

  • American Express
  • Discover (JCB or Diners Club only)

Your application will not be submitted for approval until your payment has been received.

How do you apply for an ESTA?

esta time before travel

You can only apply for an ESTA online. Find the official site here .

You will be asked to accept various terms and upload an image of your passport during your application. After uploading an image of your passport, you will also be asked to share your passport information, valid email address and other standard personal details, along with information regarding your upcoming and previous travel history.

If applicable, you may also be required to share details about your employment; aliases or other names; a national ID or personal ID number; your Global Entry, Nexus or Sentri ID number; and the name, addresses or phone number for any U.S. points of contact.

When do I need to apply for an ESTA?

Your ESTA application can be submitted at any time before you travel to the U.S. However, the DHS advises you to apply at least 72 hours before travel to allow time for processing ahead of departure.

How long does an ESTA application take to be approved?

In TPG's experience, an ESTA application can often be approved on the same day you apply, though it can sometimes take up to 72 hours to be processed. We recommend applying at least a week or two before traveling to allow time for the application to be approved.

How long is an ESTA valid for, and will I need to apply for each trip to the US?

Once approved, your ESTA will be valid for two years from the date it was authorized or until the date your passport expires — depending on which comes first. You will not be required to apply for a new ESTA for each subsequent visit to the U.S. as long as any trips fall within the two-year validity period.

If you acquire a new passport or change your name, sex or citizenship after having your ESTA approved, you must submit a new application for approval.

How can I check my ESTA status?

esta time before travel

If you have applied for an ESTA and want to check its status, you can do so by visiting the ESTA website and selecting "Check ESTA Status."

If you are checking your own application, click "Check Individual Status." You will then be asked to supply either your passport number, date of birth and application number or your country of citizenship and passport issue and expiration dates.

To check the status of a group application, click "Check Group Status." From here, you will be asked to supply your group ID, family name, first (given) name, email and date of birth of your group's point of contact.

You will then be able to see the current status of your ESTA, which will fall into one of three categories:

  • Authorization Approved — meaning your application was successful, and you are authorized to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program
  • Travel Not Authorized — meaning your application was unsuccessful, and you're not authorized to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program
  • Authorization Pending — Your travel authorization is still under review and should usually be determined within 72 hours

Note that while in most cases you will be fine entering the U.S. once your application is approved, having an ESTA alone does not guarantee admission. Your final entry will be at the discretion of the CBP officer at your destination.

Bottom line

If you are traveling to the U.S. from the U.K. or other countries eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for an ESTA at least 72 hours before your departure if you are not already approved.

Your ESTA will cost $21 and will be valid for two years from its authorization date. If you already have an ESTA, it's wise to check its status before any trips to the U.S. to ensure it's still valid.

CBP Reminds Travelers to Allow 72 Hours for ESTA

Visa Waiver Program users are encouraged to apply early

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), consistent with existing requirements, reminds international travelers using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) for travel to the United States to apply as soon as possible but not less than 72 hours before their international flight is scheduled to depart.

Visa Waiver Program users are encouraged to apply early.

ESTA is an automated system that assists in determining eligibility to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program and whether such travel poses any law enforcement or security risks.  Upon completion of an ESTA application, travelers are notified of their eligibility to travel to the United States under the VWP.

“Since its implementation in 2007, ESTA has counterbalanced vulnerabilities inherent in visa-free travel by adding a layer of advance scrutiny that enables our officers to focus on the small population of potentially dangerous travelers,” said Todd Owen, CBP Executive Assistant Commissioner of the Office of Field Operations.

Recent enhancements to the ESTA process make querying application status much smoother.  Upon successful submission, the applicant is provide an email containing their application number and a link taking them directly to the ESTA web page.

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States without a visa for stays of 90 days or less for business or pleasure when they meet all requirements.  Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the U.S. under the VWP and is required for all VWP applicants in the air and sea environment.

ESTA was one of the measures under the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007. The electronic travel authorization system was designed to enhance the security of the Visa Waiver Program by evaluating a traveler’s eligibility prior to their boarding a U.S. bound flight.

For detailed information on VWP/ESTA, please visit the CBP site at: cbp.gov/esta, or, the U.S. State Department travel site . To avoid third-party fees, CBP encourages travelers to apply use the official ESTA website.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between official ports of entry. CBP is charged with securing the borders of the United States while enforcing hundreds of laws and facilitating lawful trade and travel.

Visa Waiver Program and ESTA application

The Visa Waiver Program allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa.

Find out the requirements for ESTA

If you are a citizen of a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you must meet the eligibility requirements to travel to the U.S. under the program. You will also need authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before beginning your trip. Learn about the VWP and ESTA and if your country participates in the program.

How to request a travel authorization to the U.S. through ESTA

If you find out your country participates in the Visa Waiver Program:

Confirm that your passport meets the program requirements. You must have an  electronic passport or “e-Passport”  to participate in the VWP. This type of passport includes a chip.

Complete the  ESTA application  online.

Pay the fees: The total cost is $21. When you apply, you will pay a $4 processing fee. If you are approved to travel to the U.S., you must pay an additional $17 authorization fee.  Learn about the payment options available to pay ESTA fees.

When you complete and submit the form and processing fee, you will get an ESTA application number. Use that number to  check the status of your application . It may take up to 72 hours to find out if you are authorized to travel to the U.S. under the VWP.

Each approved ESTA application is generally valid for two years and allows multiple visits to the U.S. within that period without having to apply for another travel approval. If your passport expires in less than two years, you will receive an ESTA approval valid until the passport's expiration date.

When you travel to the U.S. for tourism or business under the VWP, you may stay up to 90 days per visit.

If you have questions about the ESTA and VWP application process, visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) FAQ page .

Other travel documents you will need to enter the U.S.

Even if you qualify for the VWP, you will need to bring a passport from your country of citizenship to enter the U.S. Generally, a visitor’s passport must not expire less than six months from the date they plan to exit the U.S. But some countries extend the validity of their passports for an additional six months after expiration. They are known as being part of the “Six Month Club.” Learn which countries are exempt from the six-month passport rule.

When you enter the U.S., officials at your port of entry will issue you a Form I-94W, an electronic record of your entry date. Learn more about I-94W and how to apply.

How many days in advance should I apply for ESTA?

How many days in advance should I apply for ESTA?

When you have decided to travel or stay on the mainland U.S. or islands in U.S. territory such as Hawaii for up to 90 days, you will need to apply for ESTA . While you can enter Guam and Saipan in the Marianna Islands without applying for ESTA, the longest you can stay without ESTA authorization is 45 days. If you apply for ESTA, you may stay as long as 90 days. Although there are no specific rules regarding how many days in advance you need to apply for ESTA, normally you will receive the results of your application within three days, or 72 hours. Therefore, it is recommended to apply for it at least three days in advance. However, in some cases it may take even longer, due to factors such as the U.S. side’s system maintenance or system problems, and also when the server is down. We accept your ESTA application at anytime, 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. The results of your application should be sent about three days after you apply, but we recommend applying for ESTA soon after you decide to travel to the U.S.

Why do I need ESTA when traveling to the U.S.?

ESTA was introduced in 2009 as an online pre-immigration screening system from the perspective of crime and terrorism prevention. When citizens of VWP (Visa Waiver Program) participating countries, including Japan, apply for ESTA, they must answer questions such as criminal records or immigration status. The pre-immigration screening system is helpful to improve the security of the U.S. and to maintain the safety of travelers.

More information for the ESTA, please check here .

Can i apply for esta even on the day of travel.

Many travelers apply for ESTA on the day of travel or right before it, because they were unaware of the ESTA program or forgot to apply earlier. Although in some cases ESTA screening goes smoothly and travelers receive authorization to travel without a hitch even when applying for it on the day of travel, in others screening may be put on hold for even a short time, meaning that they will not receive the results of screening smoothly. Please note that applying for ESTA on the day of travel will not guarantee receiving authorization to travel smoothly. ESTA is a system that does not require the traveler to apply himself or herself. If you are too busy to apply, you can ask an agent to apply for you. Contact the Center if you have any questions. If you apply for your ESTA through us, we will notify you the results of screening by email.

Esta application time – You can apply for ESTA even if your travel date is several months ahead

ESTA application is available as soon as you have decided to travel to the U.S. You may apply for ESTA even if you have not yet decided where you will stay in the U.S. We recommend applying soon after you have decided on plans to travel to the U.S. ESTA is valid for two years, although if your passport will expire in less than two years, your ESTA will expire at the same time as your passport. Check your passport’s expiration date before applying for ESTA.

Apply for ESTA at least three days before you travel

Although it takes three days, or 72 hours, for the results of screening to be finalized after you apply for ESTA in most cases, it may take longer at times such as the peak travel periods of March and August and also after large-scale system maintenance. In consideration of such cases, the U.S. recommends applying for ESTA at least three days before you travel.

You will need to apply for a visa if your ESTA application is rejected

You will need to apply for a visa if your ESTA application is rejected for any reasons. The types of visa include B visas, mainly for travel for tourism purposes, E visas, for those planning to stay in the U.S. mainly for business purposes, and L visas for those transferring to work at companies in the U.S. If your ESTA application is rejected, you will need some kind of visa to travel to the U.S., and it usually takes 1-2 months from when you apply for a visa until you receive it. The major differences of application between ESTA and a visa, in addition to the time required, are the numbers of documents that must be submitted and whether or not you need to visit a U.S. consulate for an interview. In various ways such as these, applying for a visa is much more time and cost consuming. For this reason, we recommend that those traveling to the U.S. for short-term travel or training apply for ESTA instead of a visa. If you answered “Yes” to even one of the eligibility questions when applying for ESTA, screening may take longer than 72 hours. If you are refused authorization to travel to the U.S. after applying for ESTA, double-check whether you answered every question truthfully and entered all the numbers and letters correctly on the application, try to see and determine why your application was rejected. If it is clear that the rejection was due to a mistaken entry on the form, you will need to apply for ESTA again, wait at least 24 hours and be sure to enter the information correctly. (You will have to pay the applicable charges to apply for ESTA again.) ESTA applications are accepted 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. Apply for ESTA as soon as possible after you have decided to travel to the U.S.

More information for the your ESTA application is rejected, please check here .

How long is esta valid for.

ESTA (Electric System for Travel Authorization)’s validated period is for 2 years from the date of its issuance. However, if your passport expires within 2 years, ESTA expires in the same time with your passport’s expiration date. ESTA can not be updated. You are required to re-apply for ESTA for entry to the U.S. again if it was already expired. The past ESTA information is deleted by re-application and new ESTA information with new expiration date will be issued.

More information for the ESTA expiration, please check here .

When to apply for ESTA

Updated: Jan 21, 2024  | Tags: ESTA Application Time , ESTA Status , ESTA Application Guide

Traveling to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) is streamlined by the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors for short stays. Determining when to apply for ESTA gives applicants a good idea of timing on when to start an ESTA application. If approved, an ESTA is issued for a period of two years or the date of the applicant’s passport expiry, whichever date is sooner. Thus, if an applicant is planning multiple short trips to the United States over the course of two years, then the applicant may be better suited to wait closer to the time of their first departure before applying for ESTA.

Understanding when to apply for ESTA is crucial for ensuring a smooth travel experience. This article provides a detailed guide on the ideal timing for ESTA applications, factors to consider, and tips to avoid common pitfalls.

When to apply for ESTA

Understanding ESTA and its purpose

Before diving into the timing aspect, it's important to understand what ESTA is and its role in the travel process. ESTA is not a visa but a prerequisite for citizens of VWP countries to travel to the U.S. without a visa for tourism, business, transit, or medical purposes, for stays of up to 90 days. The system screens travelers prior to their arrival, enhancing security while facilitating expedited entry upon landing in the U.S.

When to Apply for ESTA: General Guidelines

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recommends applying for ESTA as soon as you start planning your trip to the United States. Ideally, applications should be submitted at least 72 hours before your travel date. This recommendation is in place to account for any delays or issues that might arise during the application process.

If an applicant is planning only one trip to the United States over the next two years, then the applicant can apply whenever he / she chooses so long as the ESTA application is submitted at least 72 hours prior to departure as this is the maximum amount of time it takes for CBP to process an ESTA application.

The importance of an early application

Applying early for ESTA is essential for several reasons. First, it allows ample time to resolve any potential issues that may occur, such as errors in the application or the need for additional screening. In the event that an ESTA application is denied, travelers will have time to apply for a U.S. visa, which is a lengthier and more detailed process.

Early application also provides peace of mind, knowing that one critical aspect of travel planning is taken care of well in advance. This is especially important for business travelers or those with fixed travel dates who cannot afford last-minute disruptions.

Situations requiring special attention

Certain situations require extra attention when applying for ESTA. For instance, if you have a criminal record , a history of being denied entry into the U.S., or previous visa issues, it's advisable to apply for ESTA well before the 72-hour recommendation. These factors could lead to additional scrutiny, and applying early will provide sufficient time to address any complications.

Similarly, if you have recently changed your name, nationality, or obtained a new passport, it's crucial to apply for ESTA with the updated information as soon as possible to ensure that your travel authorization is accurate and valid.

What happens if you are denied an ESTA?

If an individual’s ESTA application is denied , the traveler will need to apply for a U.S. visa if they wish to enter the United States. Thus, to err on the side of caution, it is recommended U.S. bound visitors apply for their ESTA at least eight weeks prior to their departure to the United States to allow for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise with obtaining ESTA approval. This allows an individual with a denied ESTA with around eight weeks of time to apply for a U.S. visa, which usually takes anywhere from four to six weeks to process depending on the applicant’s selected U.S. embassy and personal circumstances.

Renewing your ESTA

ESTA authorizations are generally valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It's important to check the expiration date of your ESTA before planning subsequent trips to the U.S. If your ESTA has expired or your passport has been renewed, you must apply for a new ESTA. As with initial applications, it's advisable to apply for renewal at least 72 hours before your travel date, although earlier is always better.

What happens if you apply late?

Applicants wishing to apply for an ESTA less than 72 hours before their departure to the United States are risking disruption of their travel plans, should the applicant be deemed inadmissible for travel to the United States due to a pending or denied ESTA. A U.S. bound visitor will have their ESTA checked before boarding a U.S. bound aircraft as well as on arrival to a U.S. destination.

While ESTA applications are often processed quickly, sometimes within minutes, there is no guarantee that this will always be the case. Late applications leave no room for addressing issues or applying for a visa if necessary.

Tips for a smooth ESTA application process

Double-Check Your Information : Ensure that all the information on your ESTA application is accurate and matches the details in your passport. Mistakes can lead to delays or denials.

Keep Track of Your Application Status : After submitting your ESTA application, check the status regularly. If your application is pending or additional information is requested, address it promptly.

Understand the ESTA Requirements : Familiarize yourself with the eligibility criteria for the Visa Waiver Program and the ESTA requirements. Ensure that your purpose of travel and duration of stay align with these criteria.

Be Prepared for Other Travel Requirements : Apart from ESTA, be aware of other travel requirements, such as having a valid passport and meeting any health or vaccination regulations.

Applying for ESTA is a critical step in preparing for travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. To ensure a stress-free experience, apply for ESTA as early as possible, ideally as soon as you start planning your trip. Early application allows for adequate time to address any issues and provides peace of mind. By understanding the importance of timing in the ESTA application process and following the tips outlined above, travelers can look forward to a smooth and enjoyable visit to the U.S.
