Erlend Øye has brought quietness to pop music with his duo Kings of Convenience, electrified clubs as the Whitest Boy Alive, and has also released multiple records as a solo musician over the past 20 years. Since 2012, the Norwegian musician has been residing in Sicily, where he co-founded the band La Comitiva with friends. The expression describes a group of people with whom you regularly hang out. In this case, a group of musicians from various countries, who first met in the summer of 2016 to jam in the historic town of Siracusa in Sicily. They later gathered at Erlend Øye's rural residence to perform interpretations of songs from Sicily, Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil. When Erlend Øye embarked on a tour of South America, some of the musicians joined him, and La Comitiva was born. After collaborating with the Berlin stargaze Ensemble and releasing singles, the album »La Comitiva« is now being released on the Bubbles label by Marcin Oz (The Whitest Boy Alive). At Kampnagel, Erlend Øye will be performing live with La Comitiva after a concert with the stargaze Ensemble at the 2020 Summer Festival in the Elbphilharmonie was canceled due to the pandemic.

Support comes from Andrea Poggio from Milan. His project of the same name started with the album "Controluce" (2017), an art-pop work that references Paolo Conte as well as Talking Heads and Dirty Projectors. The album was produced by Eli Crews (Yoko Ono, Deerhoof, tUnE-yArDs). In 2019, Poggio contributed to the soundtrack of the film "Onoda", with which French Oscar winner Arthur Harari opened the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes. His latest album "Il Futuro", produced by Ali Chant (Aldous Harding, Perfume Genius, Yard Act), was released in May 2023. It is Andrea Poggio's proposal for the future of the Italian songwriting tradition.

Erlend Øye is a pop music composer from Bergen, Norway. He is the founder of the independent record label Bubble Records and a multi-instrumentalist artist who sings and plays guitar, bass and piano.

This event will take place in EartH Theatre.

La Comitiva is an expression in Italian that describes the people that you regularly hang out with. That you might go on trip with, that you go around town with.

This particular town, Siracusa in Sicily, is not known for its music scene, but in the summer of 2016, something unusual happened. People from several countries, and several parts of Sicily, started meeting in Ortigia (the old town of Siracusa) to jam with the instruments they have, moving from one piazza to the other in day time and night time. Central to this movement is Luigi Orofino, a social glue kind of character. In the autumn the activity moves to Erlend Øye’s countryside house and he tries to record some of what they are doing, mostly covers of Sicilian, Cuban, Colombian, Mexican and Brazilian songs. The results are limited but this new music sows seeds for future song writing.

A year and half later Erlend has planned a short solo-acoustic tour of South America to get a break from the making of the surprisingly difficult 4th Kings of Convenience record. He extends an invitation to his new Siracusa crew before leaving: if you come and find me down there, we can do something together as a part of one of the planned shows. Of the several piazza players its finally Luigi, Stefano and Marco that makes the decision to join him, and they do some intense rehearsals before 4 shows in Argentina and Chile. Chilean promoter Roberto Parra sees a band in the making and starts making calls. The initial week grows into a month with shows added in Peru, Colombia and Mexico. La Comitiva is born.

Luigi plays the Brazilian samba instrument Cavaquinho, but rarely in the traditional way. Curiously, he started playing music only at age 37. Stefano plays bass on a particularly bassy steel string acoustic guitar. Erlend plays a ukulele that he was gifted for his 40th birthday (tuned 2 steps lower than standard, as he didn’t know how it was supposed to be tuned). Marco Castello plays classical guitar in a rhytmic way and his voice is central for the choir parts of La Comitiva.

In 2016 Erlend was part of the seminal event in Berlin called People. A collaborative festival organized by Michelberger Hotel. There he got to know Stargaze, a group of symphonic instrument players specialised in playing outside of the classical world. And also Nils Frahm’s studio at Funkhaus, operated by Antonio Pulli. Most of the full-length album «La Comitiva» is a result of this Trinity.

For most of the dates in April/May La Comitiva will be extended with flute, trumpet and trombone played by Stargaze members Maaike Van Der Linde, Romain Bly and Kobi Arditi, all based in the Netherlands.

Erlend Øye & La Comitiva est né de la rencontre de l'artiste norvégien Erlend Øye avec la dolce vita italienne. Chanteur et guitariste du groupe The Whitest Boy Alive et co-fondateur du label Bubble Records, l'artiste est principalement connu pour former avec Erik Glambek Bøe le duo Kings of Convenience. Fort de sa participation dans divers projets musicaux et de ses nombreuses collaborations sur les scènes électronique, indie folk et indie pop, Erlend Øye possède un répertoire aussi large que varié.

En 2012, il annonce lors d'un concert avoir acheté une maison dans la ville de Syracuse, en Sicile. C'est sur cette ile qu'il se concentrera davantage sur sa carrière solo et se liera d'amitié avec trois musiciens et chanteurs, avec qui il formera le groupe La Comitiva ( littéralement "l'entourage"). Depuis, divers morceaux voient régulièrement le jour de cette collaboration.

En concert, Erlend Øye & La Comitiva délivrent des prestations sincères et spontanées invitant le public à se joindre à eux. A partir d'un mélange de ukelele, de guitare et de pianos saupoudré d'instruments à vent, l'artiste et son groupe créent des morceaux apaisants et nostalgiques, inspirés de la bossa nova du sud et de traditions siciliennes. Leur univers chaleureux et planant ne manquera pas d'adoucir les cœurs de leurs auditeurs.

It’s just a small step from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) to a record deal, and Louis De Roo (26) takes it with ease. Now he can fully focus on writing songs, making a debut album and working hard for his predestined big breakthrough, under his nom de plume Isaac Roux. If LIPA doesn’t ring a bell, then ‘Paul McCartney’s music academy’ certainly will. In 2015 De Roo was one of the lucky 100 applicants that were admitted to study there for four years, even having the chance to work on some songs with Sir Paul himself.

‘White Rose’ is one of those songs, heavenly indie folk with just the right amount of edge, a full sound, not slick, and the warm glow of De Roo’s characteristic voice. It was White Rose that brought him victory in ‘De Nieuwe Lichting’ (‘The New Class’), a steppingstone to a thriving career, following in the footsteps of fellow label artists The Haunted Youth and Mooneye.

Live the combination of warm indie folk and alternative rock works even better, if possible, and Isaac Roux never fails to leave a crowd open-mouthed. Isaac Roux has a lot more beautiful stuff in store for us, and in the distance, somewhere in 2024, a sensational debut album is already peeking.
