Phuket Big Buddha is one of the most significant and admired landmarks in Phuket, Thailand. You can only hear the tinkling of tiny bells and the large bell going after every 7 minutes. They are now able to roam freely, socialise with each other, and play naturally in the ponds, streams and muddy wallows throughout our land. After an an introduction video, you will meet and feed our elephants before going on a scenic walk throug h the forest, stopping at our Bamboo Observation Huts dotted along the way where you can sit quietly as our elephants go about their day. We don't follow a set route, our elephants are free to roam and forage, and if our elephants stop, we stop! They have had hard lives and they deserve the very best life we can give them. Step into our world, a true paradise forest home for elephants, and also a safe haven for an abund ance of wild birds with daily sightings of eagles soaring the skies, egrets swooping to the pond, and butterflies and dragonflies dancing in the breeze. We can't wait to show you the magic we have created for our elephants here at Hidden Forest.

Hidden Forest Elephant Reserve Phuket Thailand

Why We Don't Offer Bathing With Our Elephants

In 2016, our co-founder, Louise Rogerson brought the first non-bathing project to Phuket. She holds a firm belief that elephants should enjoy their time bathing and playing on their own, and not with humans crowding around them.

Bathing freely allows elephant s positive mental and physical stimulation after a lifetime working hard and being controlled.  Wild elephants bathe in rivers, ponds, streams and muddy wallows without human interaction and this is exactly what our rescued elephants should enjoy too.

Elephants need space to splash, roll around, submerge, play, socialise, and cover themselves in mud and they are perfectly capable of doing this without  people in the water or mud crowding around them. It is not only dangerous but also very stressful for the elephants as it inhibits their natural behaviours and the mahouts must control the elephants so nobody gets hurt.  It is also unhygienic to bathe with elephants as they urinate and defecate when in the water, and people may suffer from eye or skin infections and sickness.

Bathing with elephants does not put the welfare of the elephants first. We want our elephants to enjoy their day just as much as you, which is why we do not offer this activity at Hidden Forest.

The video of Ton Oi really says it all! Imagine if there were people in the water with her, she wouldn't have any freedom to wade through the pond, fully submerge herself, play with the reeds and clumps of roots, and she certainly wouldn't be able to chase away wild egrets! You may also notice the silence in our video too. There aren't crowds of people bathing with or rubbing mud on the elephants, instead there is nothing but the silence of the forest... just as it's meant to be for elephants.

EXPLORE THAILAND’S LONGEST CANOPY WALKWAY

Our new, 600-metre-long and 6-meter-tall canopy walkway is the only one of its kind in Phuket and takes ethical elephant tourism to new heights – literally! To provide the elephants with maximum freedom to naturally roam, forage, bathe and socialize in the jungle below, visitors can now observe them both from above as well as from a safe and respectful distance whilst hiking through our 30-acre sanctuary as part of our guided tours. .

We also offer a dedicated PES Canopy Walkway Program. Watch a trailer below and click here for more info.

Welcome to Phuket Elephant Sanctuary

Phuket's first & most ethical sanctuary, where elephants roam & bathe freely.

Bordering the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary offers a true final home for overtired elephants who have suffered from working long hours in the logging and tourism industry. As the first ethical elephant tourism experience in Phuket, we rescue sick, injured and old elephants, welcoming them back into their indigenous habit.

The Freedom and Happiness for the elephants are our top priorities. We offer full-time veterinary care, 30 acres of lush, tropical land for the elephants to roam, forage, bathe and socialize, and a dedicated team to prepare supplementary food and look after the wellbeing of the herd.

Your visit supports our work and guarantees to leave you inspired, transformed and in awe of these majestic animals.

WHY WE DO NOT OFFER BATHING

Elephants love to swim, cool off and splash in the water, and to cover themselves with thick mud. They like to do so alone or with fellow elephants. However, if people crowd around or interact with them during this bathing ritual, it becomes stressful for the elephants, preventing them from enjoying their time in the water and displaying their natural behavior.

To give the elephants the privacy they need and to enjoy their day as much as you, we built an Observation Sala overlooking our fresh water pond, from where you can witness the elephants enjoying their bathing time alone or with other elephants. This is a great photo opportunity and educational experience as you can observe the elephants behave naturally.

We do offer a brief interaction between visitors and our elephants during a feeding moment as part of the tour. This is a rare opportunity to get up close with the elephants and to capture some incredible photographs as they enjoy a few watermelons, pineapples, bananas or cucumbers.

Welfare of Elephants

  • Thailand prides itself in the conservation of its rich flora and fauna. Jungle safaris are often a part of ecotourism where tourists get to interact with different species in their natural habitat.
  • Tours of Elephant ride in Phuket are also made along these conservation lines where the elephants are taken good care of, and their health is maintained.
  •  A nutrient-rich diet is given to them, and they are given enough breaks in between to rest.
  • The elephants are kept in herds as the species live longer with each other. Baby elephants are kept with their mothers, and the family herd stays together.
  • Thailand has strict policies for anyone who tries to hurt and exploit these animals.
  • The Thai Elephant Conservation Centre (TECC), a govt-owned elephant camp protects and nurtures around 50 Asian Elephants in the vicinity of heavenly forests. In case of any complaint, you can contact them and bring the issue to light.

  • Safari in Phuket: A Handy Guide For Best Vacation Ideas For Families in Phuket!

23 Mar 2023

Thailand, the Land Of Smiles, has everything to offer for every tourist – be it a kid, art lover, adventure sport lover, etc. If Bangkok and Phuket are famous for the nightlife, the surrounding national parks, Islands, and beaches are a paradise for families and people loving the animal encounters. With its rainforest and numerous high-end hotels and resorts around, it offers a great deal to the family tourists in this part of the Andaman Sea. When in Thailand, how can you miss the elephant? So, get in. I will show you the different possibilities to see and also feel the elephant in the safari in Phuket. Spending the day just watching the elephant do stunts is not all the fun, be ready to feel and play with those baby elephants. Not just play, you could also bath the elephant and play in the water with them.

Best Time To Visit Phuket For Safari

Phuket Elephant Trekking Tours

Phuket, the southern island of Thailand, has a tropical climate with monsoon from May to October. Most of the time you will experience the weather to be around 30deg celsius. The great weather to be in the water along with the elephant playing and avoiding the splash and sprinkles poured by it. Phuket is queued by tourists all the time of the year, and so be ready to witness the crowds. More so during the November to April time frame since that is a great time to be around here.

How to Reach Phuket

Phuket International Airport

Phuket is well connected by flights with its own international airport. Phuket airport is the third busiest airport in Thailand. In addition to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, this airport in Phuket is a gateway for millions of tourists entering the Land of Smiles. To encourage the tourists & visitors Thailand government issues on-arrival visas for tourists in Phuket airport as well along with the Bangkok Airport.

If you enter Thailand through Bangkok Airport, the easiest is to fly to Phuket. Because it is around 850KM south of Bangkok. But there are cheap airlines like Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, etc that fly daily for a cost as low as 40 dollars. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach Phuket.

There is also an overnight bus that connects Phuket and Bangkok. They offer comfortable rides all along the highways of Thailand. Due to the warm weather here, I would recommend these bus trips to be over the night – not only saves money but also time. There are frequent long-distance buses from Bangkok.

Time to reach Phuket: 1 hour 30 minutes by flight. 15 – 16 hours by Bus. Cost of ticket: Flight cost starts as low as $40 BHAT. The bus ticket will be at half of this.

Top Recommendations For Safari In Phuket

Phuket and its beaches are definitely a heaven for the tourists. It is very popular for the sandy beaches, pristine blue sea, with its jet skiing and parasailing. But if you are with the families and young kids do not be disappointed. You have incredible activities to take back as memories. There are two major sites that offer encounters with the Elephant in Phuket Island.

  • Phuket Elephant Sanctuary
  • Koh Chang Elephant Safari

To be frank, both are fun in their own ways. But one word of advice. If you are looking to play with the elephants bathing in the water, then you must visit the Koh Chang site. Remember, people have different opinions on how you interact with animals. Some feel that elephants should be left alone while it baths so it can enjoy itself in the mud.

But, there are some who feel fun in joining the elephant while it is bathing. Whatever is your thought, do not miss this chance. You can never find such a place and opportunity again in other countries. Get your camera and be ready for some action and adventure.

1. Phuket Elephant Sanctuary

Wild elephants at a sanctuary in Phuket

Wild elephants at a sanctuary in Phuket

Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is covered inside a massive forest land in the north of Phuket island, around 20 KM from Phuket. This is relatively newer, started only in the year 2016. This place is filled with elephants that were rescued and rehabilitation provided here. As a visitor to this site, you will have the opportunity to have close encounters with the elephants.

They also provide shelters for many elephants that are old, sick, injured and have spent an exhaustive amount of time in a hard-working environment. As we all are aware, in the south of Asia these majestic animals are often used in the circus and other entertainment industries under a bad environment.

The elephants are made to wander freely within a close-to-their environment here. And so, there is no access to public tourists here without the organized tour.

Make sure you reach their early, so as not to miss the fruits feeding session of the tour here. After the feeding session is over, you can split into groups and follow the elephants and their mahouts to enjoy their play in their habitat. You will be sitting and be watching the elephants from your observation rooms.

These tours are headed under the ethical rules and hence there are no offers are available for riding the elephant here. Remember, this sanctuary is mainly for the well being of the majestic creatures, elephants.

Price for the Organized Tour: 3,000 BHAT per adult. 50% discount for kids up to 12 years.

2. Koh Chang Elephant Safari

Koh Chang Waterfalls

If you are looking to touch, feel, and play with the elephant, then this is the site you must visit in Phuket. The Koh Chang elephant safari is two decades old. They have been working with elephants and so know about them like their palm. Within just 1.5 hours of drive, you can reach this most famous Koh Chang Elephant Safari. Koh Chang is in the south part of Phuket Island less than 50KM from Phuket.

Moreover, it is also an opportunity for tourists to be closer to the elephants and return with a unique memory. You see, this is the best win-win situation for humans and animals, right? Koh Chang’s policy is to make sure how elephants and humans can coexist together without disturbing the other. The intention is to educate people who otherwise work overtime in erasing their homeland.

If you think these costs are on the higher side, then think again. These are our duty to help those majestic creatures live a dignified life. These are the price we pay for the incredible memories that we will be carrying back home. So if you’re planning a vacation in Phuket , make sure to enjoy these exciting safari tours and have a great time amidst the wildlife.

Top 15 Luxury Things To Do In Phuket

Without further ado, let’s dive into the best luxury things to do on and around the island to make your trip unbeatable!

  • Go On A Luxury Catamaran Cruise

One of the best things you can do in Phuket is charter a boat. Explore the stunning coastline of Phuket on a luxury catamaran cruise, complete with gourmet meals and cocktails. You’ll be able to tell the captain where you want to go and when you want to leave.

The great thing about this is you can’t charter your own boat, it’s super easy to join a private tour with fewer people or go on a group excursion. Either way, traveling around the coast on a boat will always be a lavish experience!

  •  Indulge In A Thai Massage

Thailand is famous for indulgent spa treatments. A Thai massage is always on everybody’s hit list and for good reason. It’s an incredible experience, which can be both relaxing and therapeutic. Thai massage is over 2,500 years old! You’ll experience gentle pressure and stretching techniques to relieve tension and provide the ultimate relaxation.

So, if it’s the relaxation you’re looking for, rejuvenate with a luxurious spa treatment at one of the many high-end spas in Phuket.

  • Take A Private Seaplane Tour

Hopefully, you’re not afraid of heights because one of the most extravagant things you can do in Phuket is to hit the skies on a private seaplane tour. Now, we’ve never done this, but it looks and sounds unbelievable!

Since Phuket has a stunning landscape, being able to see the beauty from above on a private seaplane tour will be a breathtaking experience filled with incredible views of the coastline and surrounding islands.

  • Go On A Private Photo Safari

If you don’t fancy taking to the skies, why not explore the stunning natural beauty of Phuket with a private photo safari? If you have any interest in photography and want to learn the perfect way of capturing flawless shots, this is a great activity!

You’ll get a professional photographer who will help you with your photography and take you around scenic locations across the island. Depending on your interests and preferences you’ll visit off-the-beaten locations, islands, or hidden spots while strolling around Phuket’s old town .

  • Have A Private Beach Day

Why not head to a private beach and enjoy a day of relaxation on the stunning beaches of Phuket, of which there are many! The island has plenty of beaches, some of which are hotel or privately owned and can be accessed for a fee.

When you get there, enjoy your own space and hire a private beach cabana. You won’t have to leave your little piece of heaven all day if you don’t want to!

  • Go On A Luxury Shopping Spree

The last time we were in Phuket we were amazed at how much it had developed. We quickly stopped by the shopping mall of Phuket Central and found it to be full of high-end shops and boutiques.

If you’re after some luxury retail therapy, this is the perfect mall to indulge in. It’s even got a cinema and an aquarium plus the lower level is a huge food court!

In addition to Phuket Central, there are other malls and markets in Phuket that offer a range of shopping experiences, from local handicrafts to international fashion brands. So, make sure to explore the island’s diverse shopping scene during your stay.

  • Stay At A Luxury Villa

If it’s luxury you’re after you’ll want to stay in an elegant hotel. Phuket is bursting with incredible stays and private villas are always a popular choice, you’ll get your own space, a private pool and fantastic views.

Many hotels offer private villas which surprisingly don’t have to cost you a year’s paycheck. But, if it’s the really high-end ones you want, then they can get pricey. Nevertheless, you’ll enjoy the ultimate holiday in comfort and privacy.

Our favorite is Sri Panwa Phuket Luxury Pool Villa Hotel which is a dream accommodation, they’re also a pet-friendly hotel , just in case you’re traveling with pets!

  • Take A Private Cooking Class With A Celebrity Chef

Do you love cooking? Taking a cooking class in Thailand is a super popular activity that everyone should try; we took one while we were in Chiang Mai, which was a load of fun.

However, to make it more personal why not try learning to cook all those amazing Thai flavours like a pro with a private cooking class? You can even get taught by a celebrity chef! This is possible in Phuket and you’ll have the opportunity to get a one-to-one lesson, including cooking tips, from a knowledgeable cook.

  • Go On A Private Snorkeling Tour

Why not embark on a private snorkeling tour to uncover the vibrant marine world thriving within Phuket’s coral reefs? This exceptional experience not only allows you to marvel at the myriad species of corals and aquatic creatures but also serves as an educational voyage.

Accompanied by an expert guide, you’ll have the privilege of discovering rare gems and exploring secluded sites that remain off the beaten path. If you’re after a more immersive encounter, opt for an exhilarating diving excursion, granting you a firsthand glimpse into the mesmerizing beauty of the deep blue sea.

Phuket’s crystalline waters are renowned for their remarkable clarity, presenting an ideal backdrop for captivating underwater photography. Remember to a waterproof camera, ensuring you capture timeless memories of your extraordinary underwater escapade!

  • Enjoy A Round Of Golf

Between you and me, I’m not a fan of golf, however, Jack enjoys it and I’ve heard that Phuket is home to some unbeatable golf courses. So, if you’re a fan why not play a round of golf (or two) at one of the many world-class golf courses in Phuket?

You’ll have a chance to experience the breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea and lush greenery while playing. Plus, the courses offer a unique challenge for all levels of players. So, even if you’re not a fan like me, it’s worth considering as a part of your vacation itinerary.

  • Go On A Private Helicopter Island-Hopping Tour

Explore the surrounding islands of Phuket with a private helicopter tour that includes stops for swimming and snorkeling in secluded coves.

You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the stunning landscapes and crystal-clear waters of the Andaman Sea, making for an unforgettable experience.

  • Take A Private Sunset Yoga Class

Something I do enjoy is yoga and being able to practice at sunset is always one of my favorite activities. Whether it be in a studio or by the beach, relax and rejuvenate with a private sunset yoga class led by a local instructor.

You can also try other wellness activities such as meditation, Thai massage, and herbal sauna to improve your overall well-being during your vacation in Phuket.

  • Take A Private Thai Boxing Lesson

Did you know that Muay Thai is a popular combat sport in Thailand, and Phuket has some of the best training facilities and coaches in the country? It’s the perfect place to take a private lesson and learn the techniques and principles of this martial art, which also doubles as a great workout.

  • A Private Tour Of An Elephant Sanctuary

We visited an elephant sanctuary while we were in Chiang Mai and had the best experience. It was towards the end of the pandemic and we were the only two at the sanctuary so it was as if we were having a private tour – something I highly recommend.

It was an unbelievable experience, however, opt to visit elephant sanctuaries that prioritize the ethical treatment of elephants.

You’ll still be able to get up close and personal with these gentle giants while learning about their behavior and conservation efforts from knowledgeable guides.

  • Have A Private Dining Experience

We love food! So enjoying a private dining experience with a personalized menu and stunning views of the Andaman Sea is top of the list.

Many restaurants in Phuket offer private dining options where you can savor delicious Thai cuisine and international dishes in a romantic and intimate setting. Think beachfront restaurants to hilltop venues, you can choose a location that suits your preference and enjoy a truly memorable dining experience with your favorite person.

What To Expect From Phuket

Well, by now you likely already know what to expect from Phuket but let’s highlight the best bits. It’s known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, lush jungles and breathtaking landscapes, making it a popular destination for luxury travellers seeking relaxation and indulgence.

You can expect some of the most beautiful beaches surrounded by soft fluffy sand and warm blue waters. It’s the perfect spot for lounging around and having fun in the water. So much so, that will make your inner water baby jump for joy! You can also enjoy trekking, wildlife, kayaking, snorkelling, and so much more from the island’s lush landscape.

Not only is Phuket famed for its tropical beaches but it’s known to have a lively atmosphere, with a wide variety of bars, clubs and shows. Thai cuisine will satisfy your inner foodie with popular dishes being served up at any establishment from street-food stalls to 5* resorts.

With a long history, Phuket is also steeped in culture and home to a rich heritage that spans centuries. As a culture enthusiast, you’ll love visiting temples, learning about traditional crafts, and participating in cultural festivals and events.

Is Thailand Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! Yes, yes, yes all over, Thailand is certainly a country worth visiting . It’s one of the best places to start your Southeast Asia travels and one of the best countries to travel to if you’re new to travelling.

The fact that Thailand has been a tourist hot-spot for years means that one of the things which make it a good place to visit is that it has established good infrastructure for tourism, making moving around, taking tours and choosing luxury activities a piece of cake.

Conclusion: Luxury Things To Do In Phuket

Hopefully, you’re super excited about visiting Phuket. It’s an incredible destination for luxury travelers looking for a mix of relaxation, adventure, and indulgent things to do. With its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, vibrant culture, and world-class amenities, Phuket offers a range of experiences to satisfy everyone.
