IF YOU’VE BEEN obsessed with Sabrina Carpenter’s “Nonsense” outros throughout the Australian leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour then you’re in luck — because the pop princess is set to return Down Under soon.

Ahead of her final show supporting Swift in Sydney , Carpenter appeared on the Australian Today Show for a Q&A with fans. In response to one question asking whether she’s planning her own headline tour of Australia she said: “My managers are looking at me with a smile — so yes,” adding that her own Aussie tour is “very much happening.”

She previously showered praise on Melbourne (after she herself was praised for pronouncing the city’s name correctly on stage). On Instagram, the star wrote: “Melbourne eras tour u are specialllll thank u for being so kind to us.”

During the Today appearance, she said she’s had a blast performing for such a “loving, happy, excited community,” during the Eras run and, “just being able to be here, like performing for technically the first time this weekend, has just made me want to come back ASAP.”

While supporting Taylor Swift on the Eras tour, Sabrina Carpenter performed a different outro for her song “Nonsense” in each city, tailoring the lyrics to the location.

Here Is Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘The Eras Tour’ Setlist

Lexi Lane

Sabrina Carpenter is currently continuing to open for Taylor Swift on The Eras Tour , as she is joining her for the Australian leg of shows in Melbourne and Sydney. Carpenter took the stage at the first one of Melbourne Cricket Grounds last night to treat fans to a selection of her best songs.

Most of Carpenter’s setlist was from her most recent record, including the “Because I Liked A Boy” and “ Feather ” singles. She also opened her set by teasing the fans in the crowd with Swift’s “Picture To Burn” (one of Carpenter’s pre-show staple picks that soundtracks her childhood footage) and Blondie’s “Atomic.”

As another surprise in Carpenter’s opening act performance, she also covered “Hopelessly Devoted To You.” When Carpenter was opening for Swift’s South American leg , she had used ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” as her nightly cover instead. With night two of Melbourne happening tonight, time will tell if she keeps the Grease song in her setlist — or swap it out for something else entirely different.

Finally, Carpenter closed out her set with “Nonsense,” where she once again changed the outro and kept the running tradition going strong.

Check out Sabrina Carpenter’s setlist from Melbourne night one below, according to Setlist.FM .

Sabrina Carpenter’s The Eras Tour Australia Setlist

1. “Read Your Mind” 2. “Feather” 3. “Vicious” 4. “Already Over” 5. “Tornado Warnings” 6. “Opposite” 7. “Hopelessly Devoted To You” (cover) 8. “Fast Times” 9. “Because I Liked A Boy” 10. “Nonsense” (custom outro)

In the time between their albums A Kind Of Hush and Passage ,  the Carpenters took time to visit their huge British fan base, and play a week of shows at the world-famous London Palladium. The results were recorded for an album that’s something of a collector’s item for fans of Karen and Richard, as Live At The Palladium was only released in the UK and Japan, and is now sadly deleted. On January 8, 1977, the album made its debut on the British charts.

Three years earlier, the Carpenters had performed at the Festival Hall in Osaka, a performance captured on Live In Japan , an even greater rarity in their catalog as it was only issued in that country, in 1975. There’s never been an official live album by the duo issued in the US.

Live At The Palladium contained a 15-minute medley of their hits, in a show featuring their A-list band including guitarist Tony Peluso, who was on hand to reprise his famous solo on “Goodbye To Love.” In 2012, journalist Ian Tasker, who was at one of the shows, reminisced about it in The Guardian newspaper.

A Brief History of Queer And Trans Women In American Music

Song and dance man: bobby freeman, ‘do you wanna dance’ originator, the bird and the bee, simple minds, and steve miller band: currently trending songs, close to perfection.

“What they served up was about as close to perfection as pop music can get,” he wrote. “Karen Carpenter’s voice was surely one of pop music’s finest, and her effortlessly warm and velvety voice was a revelation as she and the band went through ‘Close To You,’ ‘Only Yesterday,’ and ‘Rainy Days and Mondays.’”

The set, and the album, also included a George Gershwin medley showcasing Karen on drums, taking in “Strike Up The Band,” “S’Wonderful” and “Fascinatin’ Rhythm.” Richard Addinsell’s “Warsaw Concerto” was followed by a version of Cole Porter’s “From This Moment On.”

The album debuted at its No.28 peak in the UK, but it’s a record remembered with great fondness by their millions of admirers. uDiscover Music reader Geoff Ward has a particular reason to recall it with affection. “I was Karen’s driver on that UK tour that included the Palladium,” he told us. “She was one lovely lady. I have some lovely memories of her and of taking her mum and dad to my boss’s restaurant.”

I was a young married mom when Karen was singing her songs and I enjoyed her so much and so did my little girl, who by the way, still loved her as a young woman herself. Karen surpasses generation gaps. My favorite song….We’ve Only Just Begun. Shelly of Virginia

i remember buying the album straight away, lucky to have it on vinyl & CD. Terrific. I did not see Richard, Karen & the Crew in London, but at the Birmingham Hippadrome In 1976. Never forget it. Since then my late Father told me that he was so worried that I would be disappointed. He was there too, & could not believe how marvellous Karen’s voice was live. Me, I new it would be & Dad loved her voice for ever.

Hi Karen. Just wanted to tell you I too saw Karen and Richard at Birmingham Hippodrome on 20 November 1976, I was at the first of the two concerts they gave that evening. I was practically falling over myself with excitement, having missed out on seeing them in Birmingham the previous year when they had to cancel their tour due to Karen’s illness.

It was a wonderful concert, and something happened that I, just turned 18 at the time, honestly didn’t totally appreciate the significance of. I was there with my Mum and we were incredibly lucky to be sitting on the front row. During their performance of “Sing”, Karen and Richard came down into the audience and Karen got people on our row singing along with her in the “lalalalala” chorus. There was a heartstopping moment when she nearly tripped over my Mum’s bag (and commented on it!), but it didn’t stop her holding the mic out to Mum and me and getting us to sing along with her. It was a lovely moment, but to be honest It only really hit me a few years ago that I, and my Mum, had shared a mic with probably the greatest female pop vocalist of all time. I can’t believe this time next year will mark the 40th anniversary of that concert – where did all those years go?

January 9, 2015 at 2:30 pm

I was lucky enough to see them 3 times in concerts on the US east coast. Perfection each time.

Although I am comming from Europe and in the time Carpenters were at their hights, i found this music in my teenage time so beautiful and different from other mainstreams. i am still touched by the song “Calling occupants from Interplanetary craft”. Sorry that Karen past away so early. I agree she plays with the God up there.

1975, I am almost 12-year-old and spending some time at my aunt’s house during the summer school holiday. I was rather new to music in general, and up to that moment never bought a vinyl by myself. My 17-year-old cousin had the ‘Horizon’ album and I started playing it. I could not believe how extraordinary it was and how much Karen’s voice influenced me. The city where my aunt lived was very small and isolated, so there was only one music shop; I said to myself: I want this. I really want ‘Horizon’. So off I went to the shop but all I could find was ‘Ticket To Ride’ from 1969.. I was disappointed, but I bought it nevertheless. Yes, it was indeed the first album I ever bought! And it didn’t disappoint, although ‘Horizon’ was more complete as an album, ‘Ticket To Ride’ had it beautiful charm and I still have it 41 years later! Needless to say, when I returned home in September I bought ‘Horizon’ and then started collecting them, the last one was of course ‘Made in America’ (1981). I love Karen so much, her voice, but not just her voice. Her beautiful personality and her truth which always shined through her singing. And Richard completed her so well with his music; what a magical duo. The Carpenters have a great part of my early teens to this day. I will always love them. Here is to you, Karen & Richard!

I saw The Carpenters at the Palladium…fantastic night!….Tony Peluso had his leg in a plaster cast…but it didn’t affect his playing!…Happy Memories!

November 11, 2016 at 12:11 am

Glad you mentioned Tony Peluso. He did indeed have his leg in a plaster cast, having suffered what must have been a severe break as I’m pretty sure the accident had occurred around 12 months earlier. It didn’t stop him performing brilliantly however, and he was totally wonderful in his iconic “Goodbye to Love” solo. I was lucky enough to see the band at Birmingham Hippodrome and will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of that wonderful occasion on Sunday 20 November by watching a recording of the BBC special and raising a glass to the memory of our dear, much missed Karen and remembering Tony P as well.

Is Sabrina Carpenter Touring Australia In 2024?

Profile picture of Ella Sangster

No ‘Nonsense’ here: Sabrina Carpenter might be set to tour Australia in 2024.

It’s been a huge year for Carpenter already. After wrapping her supporting legs of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, the singer has enjoyed a number-one global hit in the boppy ‘Espresso,’ performed two viral sets at Coachella , and starred in a Skims campaign (a real marker of a modern it-girl, let’s be honest). Oh, and she’s found a boyfriend in Saltburn star Barry Keogan , just to top it all off. What better way to celebrate all that success with a trip Down Under? Well, it seems Team Sabrina may be thinking the same thing.

During an interview her last day in Australia back in February, Carpenter told the Today Show that an Australian tour is “very much happening.” So, how soon can we expect to be dancing to ‘Feather’ again? Scroll on for everything we know about the prospective tour so far.

Is Sabrina Carpenter Coming To Australia?

After jetting Down Under to support Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour earlier this year, the pop star has confirmed she will return for some headline shows of her own. During an interview her last day in Aus back in February, Carpenter told the Today Show that an Australian tour is “very much happening.”

During the interview, she stressed how much she had enjoyed playing for the Aussie crowds and added, “just being able to be here, like performing for technically the first time this weekend, has just made me want to come back ASAP.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sabrina Carpenter (@sabrinacarpenter)

However, she has not yet confirmed when, exactly she will be back. Earlier this year, Carpenter revealed that she was working on a new album, so whether Aussie shows could be part of a broader, yet-to-be-announced tour tied to a record remains to be seen. Rest assured, we’ll keep you updated when we know more.

Is Sabrina Carpenter Releasing An Album?

Yes, in a recent Interview cover story Carpenter revealed new music was in the works.

This would be the follow-up to 2022’s Emails I Can’t Send and reflecting on the song writing process she noted, “I feel a lot freer and more excited about what I’m making now because I’ve realized that genre isn’t necessarily the most important thing.” She added, “It’s about honesty and authenticity and whatever you gravitate towards. There were a lot of genres in my last album, and I like to think I’ll continue that throughout writing music.”

Watch here for updates.

Sabrina Carpenter

When Sabrina Carpenter first released Emails I Can’t Send in July 2022, nobody expected “Nonsense” to take on a life of its own in the way that it has. While flashier songs like “Fast Times” and “Because I Liked a Boy” got a lot of initial attention, it was “Nonsense” that grew into the set’s runaway hit — thanks, in no small part, to Carpenter’s hilarious improvised outros on her global Emails I Can’t Send Tour.

In essence, every night Carpenter performs “Nonsense,” she changes the lyrics of the outro on the fly. Sometimes she’s simply paying tribute to the city in which she’s performing — and, other times, she’s testing how far she can push the limits of sexually suggestive lyrics.

The original “Nonsense” outro reads: “This song catchier than chickenpox is/ I bet your house is where my other sock is/ Woke up this morning, thought I’d write a pop hit, ha-ha/ How quickly can you take your clothes off? Pop quiz.”

“Nonsense” peaked at No. 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 , her second career entry on the chart; the single also reached the top 10 on Pop Airplay (No. 10). Emails I Can’t Send debuted and peaked at No. 23, becoming the highest peaking and longest charting LP of her career.

Taylor Swift announced on June 2, 2023, that she would be bringing her record-breaking Eras Tour to Latin America, with Carpenter serving as her opener across the summer and fall in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. She would also open Eras Tour shows in Australia and Singapore from Feb. 16-March 9, 2024.

Naturally, the singer-songwriter brought her “Nonsense” outro shenanigans to her first couple Eras Tour performances, and she’s already gifted fans with a number of hilarious renditions of the track. From Mexico to Singapore and beyond, here’s every “Nonsense” outro Sabrina Carpenter has performed on the Eras Tour so far:

Mexico City, Night 1

For the Aug. 24 Eras Tour show — the first of four consecutive nights at Mexico City’s Foro Sol stadium — Sabrina sang: “I only date him if he pays my rent-ay/ If you are a Swiftie, you’re mi gente/ Let me hear you make some noise DF.”

“He said where you at, I said ‘I’m busy’/ Sipping on tequila getting tipsy/ Con mis chicas in Mexico City,” the Disney alum quipped.

Mexico City, Night 3

“I’m full grown but I look like a niña/ Come put something big in my casita/ Mexico, I think you are bonita!”

Some fans heard a slightly more NSFW of this outro, replacing “casita” with “pusita.”

Buenos Aires, Night 1

“How to ride it, I can think of 5 ways/ My head goes so hard I’m giving migraines/ How loud do you get in Buenos Aires,” the “Feather” singer joked on opening night of the Eras Tour mini-residency in Argentina.

Buenos Aires, Night 2

For the second Buenos Aires Eras Tour show — which was postponed due to “truly chaotic” weather — Sabrina closed out “Nonsense” with, “He said, ‘What’s your name?’ I said ‘Sabrina’/ Saw that obelisco, said ‘que linda’/ Who’s the loudest here in Argentina?”

Buenos Aires, Night 3

For the final Buenos Aires Eras Tour show, Carpenter sang, “When I’m in the bedroom looking sexy/ He’s having a ball, he call me ‘Messi’/ Argentina, will you be my bestie?” — a nod to Argentine football icon Lionel Messi.

Rio de Janeiro, Night 1

For the first Rio de Janeiro Eras Tour stop, the “Feather” singer played on one of Brazil’s signature drinks: “Sipping on me like a caipirinha/ How to turn me on, boy, I can teach ya/ My new name is ipanema ‘Brina”

Rio de Janeiro, Night 2

The second Rio de Janeiro Eras Tour stop — which was staged at Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos like the other two dates — featured Carpenter singing, “It’s kinda small, but I don’t even care though/ Cupid must have hit me with an arrow/ ‘Cause I’m in love with Rio de Janeiro!”

Rio de Janeiro, Night 3

For the final Rio de Janeiro Eras Tour stop — which was rescheduled from its original Nov. 18 date to extreme heat — found the “Skin” singer joking, “Boy come over, this is not a drill/ He said, ‘Get on top,’ I said, ‘I will’/ Then he made me come… to Brazil!”

Melbourne, Night 1

For her first night on the Australian leg of the Eras Tour (Feb. 16), Sabrina Carpenter took the Aussies right into the deep end with the salacious “Nonsense” outro — and she also impressed some locals with her knowledge of the proper pronunciation of the city’s name.

“D-I-C-K I am good at spelling/ Tastes so good, I need a second helping/ Aren’t you glad I know how to say Melbourne,” she crooned.

Melbourne, Night 2

The “Nonsense” outros aren’t all raunchy! For her second night in Melbourne (Feb. 17), she poked fun at her relationship with alcohol.

“I don’t say ‘Hello,’ I say ‘G’day, mate!’/ I don’t make a bevvy, I’m a lightweight/ Melbourne, I just came, I saw, and I ate,” she sang.

Melbourne, Night 3

For her final night opening up for Taylor Swift at Melbourne Cricket Ground (Feb. 18), Sabrina Carpenter packed on the faux regret and hilariously relayed the process of leaving an old flame who couldn’t keep up in bed.

“Broke up ’cause the size was underwhelming/ Tried to give him pointers, wasn’t helping/ Maybe, I just need a boy from Melbourne,” she sang.

Sydney, Night 2

Although she was unable to perform her set the first night of the Eras Tour’s stint in Sydney (Feb. 23-26) due to the weather, Sabrina Carpenter was able to make it for Night 2 (Feb. 24). For that evening’s “Nonsense” outro, she opted to bring back the raunch.

“When you go down under, do you miss me?/ He’s so big, I felt it in my kidney/ Screamed so loud they heard it here in Sydney!” she joked.

Sydney, Night 3

For the third show in Sydney (Feb. 25), the singer chose to temper her sultry side with a nod to the thick, dark brown spread known as Vegemite.

“Yeah, he’s pretty cute but will our kids be? This country’s so big I hope it fit me/ I Vegemite be in love with you, Sydney,” she sang.

Sydney, Night 4

For her final night in Sydney’s Accor Stadium (Feb. 26), Carpenter delivered what just might be her funniest “Nonsense” outro yet — and it’s all thanks to her play on the Australian pronunciation of the word “no/nah,” which has been a long-running Internet meme.

“I can’t believe a plane can fly this far/ I met the cutest Aussie at the bar/ He said, ‘Are you from here?’ I said ‘Naur,'” she sang as the stadium went wild.

Singapore, Night 1

For her first night in Singapore’s National Stadium (Mar. 2), Sabrina played on how she prefers to keep herself, ahem, Down Under.

“Gardens by the Bay, I wanna go there / Then, I’ll take you somewhere that has no hair / Singapore you’re so perfect, it’s no fair,” she winkingly crooned.

Singapore, Night 2

Singapore Night 2 brought along both a reference to the gorgeous Jewel Changi — an entertainment and retail complex that features an enormous waterfall structure — and a sweet reaction from Carpenter’s Oscar-nominated beau Barry Keoghan. The Saltburn actor cheered as she sang:

“He said that he wishes he was on me / Got me wetter than the Jewel Changi / Singapore, I hope you like my songy!”

Singapore, Night 3

For her third consecutive night at Singapore’s National Stadium (March 4), Sabrina had to tweet a clarification after the show because some fans misheard her one of freestyle lyrics as “almond” instead of “omelette.”

“This crowd ate me up like I’m an omelette/ I swear I’m coming back here, that’s a promise/ You cleared all my Singa-pores, I’m flawless,” she sang.

For Night 4 of the Eras Tour’s stint at Singapore’s National Stadium, Sabrina doubled down on her penchant for innuendo.

Beatlemania: the enduring legacy of the Beatles’ tour of Australia, 60 years on

The Beatles leave Sydney airport for New Zealand, 21 June 1964.

The Beatles spent almost three weeks in Australia and New Zealand. Touching down in a wet and cold Sydney on Thursday, 11 June 1964, they played 32 concerts in eight cities: first Adelaide (where drummer Ringo Starr, suffering from tonsillitis and pharyngitis, was replaced by Jimmie Nicol), then Melbourne (with Starr again), Sydney, Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch and two final shows in Brisbane on 29 and 30 June.

Charming and irreverent as they were, The Beatles themselves were only part of the reason the tour was so memorable.

It was the hordes of screaming fans who followed their every move that astonished onlookers.

The rise of Beatlemania

By 1964, Australian teenagers had access to a global youth culture. As the feminist author Anne Summers, then an Adelaide teenager, recalled in her memoir Ducks on the Pond :

It was rare for world-famous pop stars to come to Adelaide and unheard of for a group at the height of their celebrity.

That Australian teenagers had the opportunity to see The Beatles in person in 1964 was due to a stroke of luck for tour promoter Kenn Brodziak . In late 1963, Brodziak secured the then up-and-coming Beatles for a three-week tour of Australia at a bargain rate.

By the time the tour took place, The Beatles was the biggest band in the world.

Their popularity had skyrocketed throughout 1964. I Want To Hold Your Hand went to number one on the Australian charts in mid-January and the top six singles that year were all by The Beatles .

So when the band arrived here, Beatlemania was the predictable result: crowds of surging, screaming young people, who turned out in massive numbers wherever The Beatles appeared.

While the earliest rock ‘n’ roll fans (and even performers) in the late 1950s were often labelled juvenile delinquents , there were too many teenagers swept up in Beatlemania for them to be dismissed in the same way. The crowds became a spectacle in themselves.

‘A chanting mass of humanity’

Beatlemaniacs were loud and unruly. The Daily Telegraph reported:

50,000 screaming, chanting, struggling teenagers crowded outside Melbourne’s Southern Cross Hotel this afternoon to give The Beatles the wildest reception of their careers.

It was a similar story in Adelaide. The Advertiser described:

police, their arms locked together and forming a tight circle around the car carrying the Beatles, had to force a path through the surging, screaming crowd […] Police said they had never seen anything like it.

The crowds overwhelmed observers with their sheer size – a “solid, swaying, chanting mass of humanity”, according to The Age – and noise. The Daily Telegraph consulted an acoustics expert to conclude “Beatles fans scream like [a] jet in flight”.

Beatlemania was visible (and noisy) evidence of a growing teenage consumer market and the assimilation of rock music, dancing and youth culture into the leisure practices of middle-class youth. It was proof (if anyone still needed it) the youth market was highly developed and extremely lucrative.

The speed with which companies found a ready audience for Beatles merchandise (wigs, souvenirs, magazines) demonstrated the relative affluence of the youthful consumer in mid-1960s Australia. This market would continue to grow throughout the decade.

A new idea of youth

Perhaps the most remarkable characteristic of Beatlemania was its femaleness. While not all Beatles fans were girls, it was the crying, screaming girls who attracted the most media comment.

The Daily Telegraph described them this way:

It was the girls, the nymphets of 1964 in their uniform of black slacks and duffle coats and purple sweaters – who showed the orgiastic devotion due to the young men from the damp and foggy dead end of England […] the girls wept, screamed, grimaced, fainted, fell over, threw things, stamped, jumped and shouted […] [The Beatles] were the high priests of pop culture, taking due homage from a captive, hypnotised hysterical congregation.

The references to “nymphets” with their “orgiastic devotion” tells us many Australians thought these young women were transgressing the norms expected for their era. Young women in the early 1960s were still expected to be demure and responsible. Beatles fans were breaking these rules, and helping to rewrite the meanings of youth and gender in 1960s Australia.

Beatlemania was an expression of female desire. The Beatles were powerful objects of fantasy for many fans in a world where sexual mores were slowly changing but where women were still expected to police male desire, stopping young men from “going too far”. A fantasy relationship with a Beatle became a way for young women to dream about their ideal relationship.

Screaming, chasing a Beatle down the street: these were acts of rebellion and joy that prefigured the rise of women’s liberation, with its embrace of rebellious femininity.

Beatlemania reminds us that, even if women were not always behind the microphone or playing the guitar, they have been important to the history of rock ‘n’ roll music as fans and audience members.

Beatlemania marked the ascendancy of a new idea of youth: these young people weren’t mere replicas of their parents, but they were not juvenile delinquents, either. The Beatles tour drew young Australians more closely into a transnational youth culture, fostering the development of a distinctively Australian variant here.
