In this guide, I explain, step-by-step, how to travel between Belize City and Cancun overland by bus. This is an easy trip to make. The service is direct. There is no need to change buses along the way.

day trip to belize from cancun

Update: I made this trip a few years ago. I have heard that this route is no longer available but I haven’t been able to confirm. If this is the case, you can take a bus to the Mexico border, cross on foot, then catch another bus on the Mexico side.

How to Buy Tickets

Tickets can be purchased at the bus station on the day of travel. Buying tickets in advance is not necessary. The Mexican bus company ADO operates this route every day. Buying tickets online is not possible at this time.

Stops along the way include:

  • Belize City
  • Orange Walk
  • Playa del Carmen

Booking Tickets in Belize City

This bus station is kind of weird. ADO tickets are sold at the bus station from a newsstand type store. It’s basically just a storefront that sells magazines, snacks, drinks, and ADO bus tickets. There are several stores like this in the bus station. You are looking for the one with a big, red ADO sign sitting out front. It is clearly marked. You can’t miss it. The station is pretty small so you shouldn’t have any problems finding your way around or locating the ticket office.

Tickets for this route are not sold until 5:00 pm on the day of travel. The bus leaves Belize City at 7:30 pm.

Paying for Belize City to Cancun Tickets

The payment process is kind of confusing as well. When you buy tickets from Belize City to Cancun, you pay for the Belize section of the trip only at the bus station in Belize City. They accept payment in cash only in Pesos, Belize dollars, or US dollars.

After you cross the border into Mexico, the bus stops at another ADO station where you pay for the Mexican portion of your trip in pesos. The same bus will continue on to Cancun. If you prefer, you can get off in Tulum or Playa del Carmen. This station only accepts payment in Pesos. You can also pay by credit or debit card .

Booking Tickets in Cancun

Two buses travel from Cancun to Belize city every day. One leaves at 7:30 am and the other leaves at 10:15 pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Cancun bus station. The ticket office accepts cash and credit cards.

You can also purchase tickets for this route here online.  The only problem is that you need to make the booking with a Mexican credit or debit card. Foreign cards are not accepted for some reason.

Bus Station Locations

  • Belize City Bus Station- The station is located at FRV4+MP Belize City, Belize . This address is a plus code. Either click the link or copy the code into Google Maps to view the exact location of the bus station.
  • Cancun Bus Station- The station is located at Calle Pino, SM23, MZ56, Lt 1 y 2, Centro, 23, 77500 Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Getting to the Belize City Bus Station

If you are coming from the Belize City ferry terminal after visiting the islands, the bus station is just a 15 minute walk from the port. If you have a lot of luggage, you can also take a short taxi ride.

A Note on Safety at the Belize City bus station

The bus station is located in kind of a sketchy neighborhood. It is not recommended to walk around the area after dark. If you are arriving in Belize City after dark, it is best to just take a taxi. Muggings and robberies happen around the bus station.

Pickpocketings and petty thefts also happen here. Be cautious and keep an eye on your belongings in and around the Belize City bus station. These are usually crimes of opportunity.

  • Belize City to Cancun- The bus leaves Belize City at 7:30 pm every night. Tickets are not sold until 5:00 pm on the day of travel. The bus arrives in Cancun the following morning around 7:00 am.
  • Cancun to Belize City- The bus leaves Cancun at 7:30 am and 10:15 pm every day. The ride to Belize City takes about 9 hours.

Bus Ticket Prices

This is a fairly expensive trip for what it is. In my opinion, it’s overpriced but it is significantly cheaper than flying. All in, the ticket costs around $60.

  • Belize City to Cancun- First, you pay for your ticket from Belize City to the Mexican border. This ticket costs around 20 Belize dollars (about 10 USD). Shortly after crossing the Mexican border, the bus will stop at an ADO station and you will pay the remaining portion of the fare. Tickets from the Mexican border to Cancun cost around 600 pesos (about $30).
  • Cancun to Belize City- Tickets cost about 840 pesos (about 42 USD). You may be able to get a better rate if you book far in advance.

day trip to belize from cancun

Your ticket includes a luggage allowance for a large backpack or suitcase and a smaller item to bring on the bus. When I made this ride, the bus was nearly empty so there was plenty of room for extra luggage. Some people were carrying multiple large suitcases and I don’t believe they were charged any extra. Whether or not you’re charged for extra or oversized luggage depends on the mood of the driver. Usually, they don’t seem to really care.

Storing luggage under the bus is safe. ADO is a professional company that takes security seriously. With that being said, I recommend you bring any cash and valuables into the bus with you just for peace of mind.

The Bus Ride

This is a long ride that covers a lot of ground. The buses are new and comfortable. Unfortunately, because it is a night bus, you will be woken up in the middle of the night for the border crossing. If you are traveling North, you’ll be woken up a second time to pay for the second portion of your ticket into Mexico. This is annoying but it’s just part of the fun.

The Border Crossing

This crossing is smooth and organized both ways. This border is pretty honest. Scams are not really a concern here. The crossing isn’t very busy during the middle of the night when your bus crosses.

Crossing From Belize to Mexico

Belize charges an exit fee or conservation fee when you leave the country. This fee can be paid in cash when the immigration official checks your passport. This is a legitimate fee and is not a scam. The charge is 40 Belize dollars (about 20 USD).

Entering Mexico is easy as well. You will be handed an entry card or FMM to fill out with your personal information and the details of your trip. The immigration official will stamp your card and passport. Make sure you keep this card for the duration of your trip to Mexico. You’ll need it when you leave the country. For more info, check out my complete guide to the FMM visitor’s permit.

When you go to pass through customs, you will press a button and a light will go on. If the light is green, you pass through. If the light is red, you have been randomly chosen for further inspection. They will briefly look through your luggage and send you on your way.

There is no charge upon entry to Mexico but there may be a charge when you exit the country. If you stay in Mexico for less than a week, there is no charge. If you stay longer than a week, there will be a 500 peso charge when you leave. Generally, this charge is included in your airfare if you leave Mexico by air. If you leave by land, you’ll have to pay in cash.

For more in-depth info, check out my guide: Do You Need a Passport to Go to Cancun?

day trip to belize from cancun

Crossing From Mexico to Belize

When you leave Mexico, you’ll be asked for your exit card or FMM which you filled out when you entered the country. If you have been in Mexico for less than a week, there will be no charge. If you have been in Mexico for more than a week, you’ll be charged a 500 peso fee. When entering Mexico by air or through the Northern Border in Tijuana , for example, you may have already paid this fee. Hopefully, you kept your receipt. If you didn’t, you’ll probably have to pay again.

Entering Belize is easy. There is no charge upon entry. An exit fee of 40 Belize dollars is charged when you leave the country.

Some sections of this trip must be paid in cash. You’ll need either Mexican pesos, US dollars, or Belize dollars. To recap the trip costs:

Belize City to Cancun

  • Bus ticket to Mexico border- 20 Belize dollars
  • Belize exit fee (conservation fee)- 40 Belize dollars
  • Bus ticket to Cancun- 600 pesos. This can be paid by card as well

Cancun to Belize City

  • Bus ticket to Belize City- 840 pesos. Can be paid in cash or by card.
  • Mexico exit fee- 500 pesos. Must be paid in cash.

Food and Drink During the Journeys

Because this bus travels through the night, there is no meal stop during the ride. I recommend you have dinner before you board the bus. You should also bring some water along for the ride.

The Belize City bus station has small stands set up where you can buy chips, drinks, cookies, and a few pre-prepared foods. You may not want to venture outside of the bus station after dark as the area is said to be a bit dangerous. The area seemed safe enough to me though.

Tip: If you’re looking for a full meal near the Belize City bus station, the closest restaurant is a Chinese place directly across the street. It is small, dark, and crowded but the food is good. I recommend the chicken fried rice. When I was there, it was full of loud talking locals. Some were a bit rowdy but the pace was clean and seemed safe enough. The food was excellent and only cost a couple of dollars for a large plate.

The Cancun bus station is located pretty centrally in the city. It is within walking distance of several street food stands and restaurants. There is also a supermarket nearby where you can stock up on snacks and drinks for the ride.

Bathroom Stops

This bus doesn’t stop for bathroom breaks. Luckily ADO buses are equipped with a bathroom at the rear of the bus. Bathrooms at bus stations usually have a small charge of 25-50 cents equivalent.

Final Thoughts

This trip is a bit of a hassle but saves you a lot of money on a flight. I don’t know why they divide up the ticket purchases into the Belize and Mexico section on the Northbound bus. It is just another stop in the middle of the night that disturbs your sleep. This was the most frustrating part for me even though I was expecting it. Overall, the ride is comfortable. ADO is a reliable and professional service.

@Javi, they stopped because of Covis. They have recently restarted again, but it is really hard to get information about it - it is like it doesnt exist on the ADO website, but it is running.

A Guide: Travelling from Cancun, Mexico to Belize for Many Budgets

This is one of my most frequently asked questions and my post on the trip from Belize City to Cancun on the overnight bus is one of my most read. It’s just a fact.  Flying into Cancun is usually so much cheaper than flying to Belize City.  There are so many more direct flights, the airport probably has 100x the traffic.

day trip to belize from cancun

If you have time, it’s a great way to save money on your trip to Belize.  I usually suggest it to someone that is coming to Belize for at least 8 days.  Depending on the times of your flights to and from Cancun, you will  probably have a travel day on either side of your trip.

One quick suggestion for saving money:  If you don’t want to travel to and from Cancun, try booking a “multi-city flight”.  Mix it up.  Flying into Cancun and out of Belize City or the other way around.  You can often save a few hundred dollars hat way.

Okay.  Let’s break it down by how expensive the option is.  And the more money always means the fastest.

MOST EXPENSIVE Supposedly available in the next few weeks, you can fly on the new Tropic Air flight from Cancun directly to Belize International Airport.  The price or schedule for this option has not been announced yet.  Stay tuned.

I am not sure what size plane will be making the journey.  But here is one of their planes that flies in Belize.

day trip to belize from cancun

If you are continuing on to San Pedro, the flight is an additional $78 USD.

LESS EXPENSIVE:

Unless you fly into Cancun early in the morning, your trip down to Belize (6.5 to 9 hours in total) is going to require an overnight stay in Mexico.  I find that the very easiest place to stay the night is Playa Del Carmen, just one hour south of Cancun (not marked on the map, it is just across from Cozumel on the mainland).  You can also go to Tulum if you don’t mind travelling a bit longer (one more hour) after your flights.  It is also a great stop and will allow you to see the amazing ruins early the next morning.

Here’s a map for you.

The distance from Cancun to Corozal, Belize (the closest town to Mexico) is about 300 miles.

When you get off the plane, exit the airport and ask one of the 100s of helpers at the help desk for the ADO bus to Playa Del Carmen.  The bus costs $120 pesos or $10USD and takes you to Playa Del Carmen.  The trip is about 1 hour.

day trip to belize from cancun

Since you are leaving the next morning, it’s easiest to buy your bus ticket for the next day at the station before you leave.  Check the ADO schedule on-line for all the times.  Your final destination?  Chetumal.  Also, make sure to ask which bus station you will be leaving from.  There are TWO in Playa del Carmen.

The town is laid out like a numbered grid.  So it’s quite easy to find your way around.  5th Avenue is the pedestrian walkway/heart of Playa.

Now you have the afternoon, evening and the morning in Playa.  You can generally find a decent hotel on-line for about $40-60USD.  You can also find cheap hostels or gorgeous expensive boutique hotels.  Up to you.  Enjoy…tons of eating, drinking, shopping, partying options.  It’s quite a big town.

day trip to belize from cancun

Next morning, get on your bus to Chetumal at the correct station (though they are about 10 minutes walking distance to each other, you certainly don’t want to be running with all of your luggage if you pick the wrong one.)

The ride is on a comfy, air-conditioned bus and costs just about $200 pesos or $17 USD.  I am a big fan of the front seats though once you pass Tulum, there is VERY little to see other than bugs hitting the windshield.

day trip to belize from cancun

It last 4.5 hours and has brief stops in Tulum and Puerto Carillo (my favorite).  A tiny totally non-touristy town where ladies at the bus station serve delicious, cheap tostadas.  Make sure to get plenty of the picked red onions.

day trip to belize from cancun

Chetumal, Mexico is your final stop.  You have a few options from here:

More expensive:  You can have a taxi service from Belize pick you up at the bus station.   I like Henry Menzies and crew .  They are always super prompt, have new air-conditioned vans and are very helpful about getting you across the border hassle and worry free.  They also are very quick to answer emails.  Leave over an hour for this transfer.  It costs $30USD no matter how many people you have (up to 6 or 8).

Though the distance isn’t far (it’s about 15 minutes from the bus station to the border and then another 15-20 minutes on the Belize side to the air strip), you want to give yourself time if there is a line at the border.  You should NOT have to pay the exit fee from Mexico if you have been in the country for only one or two days.  They will sometimes try to charge you…let you transfer driver talk to Mexican immigration if this happens.  He can usually fix it (another perk of paying for this service….that exit fee is about $25USD).

You final destination is the Corozal air strip (a few minutes out of town) and the 20 minute flight on either Tropic Air or Maya Island to San Pedro.  The flight generally costs about $60USD each way.

If you have an extra time at the airstrip, check out this bar about 200 feet down the driveway.  Let’s just say there are plenty of interesting characters there to keep you busy.

day trip to belize from cancun

Less expensive:   There is also a bus that can take you from Chetumal to Corozal town and ultimately to Belize City if that is your route.  They are Belizean buses and generally leave from the Market in downtown Chetumal.  Ask at the ADO station where you can locate that bus.  It is CHEAP and SLOW.  Since the bus is often full, it will insure that you are on a line at the border.

It’s a retired US school bus like this…but red.

day trip to belize from cancun

Once in Corozal town, you will need to take a taxi to the air strip if you are continuing on via air.

And LASTLY!  The water taxi from Chetumal to San Pedro and then Caye Caulker, Belize.  Take a taxi from the ADO station in Chetumal to the municipal dock.  (About $50 pesos/$4US and 15 minutes.)

There are two water taxi companies (though right now they are only running one boat…which is a shame since the competition usually gets you lower prices on the fare.)

The two companies are San Pedro Belize Express  ($40USD) and San Pedro Water Jets ($50USD).  Both depart Chetumal at 3pm.  And both take about 2 hours…longer if the water is choppy.

For the boat, you deal with Mexico immigration and customs on the Chetumal dock and Belize customs and immigration in San Pedro.  Depending on the amount of people on the boat, this can take quite a while.  Make sure to arrive at the Chetumal dock at least 30 minutes prior to departure.

If you are earlier, have a Corona at the new little bar set up on the dock.

day trip to belize from cancun

Hmmmm…perhaps I have made this more complicated than it needs to be!  But there are really so many ways to do it.

If you have any questions, as always, send me an email at www.sanpedroscoop.com.  It’s really not hard!  Promise.

And if you have the time (the most crucial part!) and can save $250USD or more on the flights?  I think it is totally worth it.

All You Need To Know To Travel From Mexico To Belize Via Ferry

day trip to belize from cancun

After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, traveling from Mexico’s bordering city of Chetumal, MX to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker via boat is possible once more. Just an hour and a half away from San Pedro Town is Chetumal, a major trading center and the capital city of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Two companies operate the ferry between Belize and Mexico — Water Jets International and San Pedro Belize Express — who depart on alternate days. Water Jets International has returned its service in Belize to its entirety, operating every day of the week except for Thursdays and Sundays; the ferry leaves Chetumal’s Fiscal Dock at 10 am, with 90 minutes to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye in Belize. Ready to travel? Grab a valid passport (and visa, if applicable for the country of issue) and book your trip.

Rates for adults and children

day trip to belize from cancun

You will note that the website has the prices in Mexican Pesos. A one-way ticket to San Pedro, Belize goes for MXN $1,300 or around US$63. The price for children ages 4-9 is MXN$1,105 or US$53. From Chetumal to Caye Caulker, the fare for a one-way ticket is MXN$1,400 or US$68. Meanwhile, children aged 4-9 pay MXN$1,190 or around US$58. There is no charge for children below the age of 4.

How long is the boat trip to Belize?

The boat leaves Chetumal at 10 am, Mexico time. Currently, Mexico is ahead of Belize by one hour. However, during the winter months, Mexico and Belize share the same time zone. The estimated boat trip to San Pedro is around 1 hour and 30 minutes. The estimated time to Caye Caulker is 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Other possible fees

During the height of the COVID-19 wave, one of the regulations from the Government of Belize was the implementation of a travel and health insurance policy, which every foreign visitor needed to purchase before traveling to Belize. The cost is US$18 and is primarily to mitigate costs to travelers and hoteliers relating to Covid, trip cancellations, and health emergencies.

However, effective July 15, Belize removed all COVID-related public health measures, including vaccination status, pre-arrival testing, and mandatory travel insurance. Foreign visitors are still recommended to purchase travel health insurance, but it is not mandatory. There are still destination taxes:

  • Exit tax from Belize is US $20 (estimated). Does not apply to Belizean citizens.
  • Entry tax payment is MX $638 (estimated). Does not apply to Mexican citizens. Belizean dollars are not accepted.
  • Proof of payment of entry tax to Mexico otherwise is MX $638 (estimated). Belizean dollars are not accepted.
  • Entry tax to Belize is US $1.50 (estimated).

What’s the Best Way to Get to Belize from Cancun?

It’s perfectly understandable why you would want to get out of Cancun and head south to Belize. Cancun is kind of touristy and expensive, and while you’ll have to get out your translation guide or app to understand what’s being said, from the moment you arrive in Belize, you’ll be able to converse in English. Reasons to prefer Belize to Cancun are too numerous to list here, so what do you say we get you out of Mexico and to Belize where Cahal Pech Belize Resort will welcome you with open arms and a transportation solution that could double the pleasure you get on vacation.

If you decide to drive yourself—either because you drove from North America to Cancun and want to continue on in your own car, you can expect to pay around $3 USD per gallon for gas in Cancun, so the amount of fuel you consume during the 303 mile drive will depend on how efficiently your car performs. Large vehicles that only get about 10 mpg may have you wishing you had taken alternative transportation, not to mention wear and tear on your nerves driving between two countries.

One of the most efficient ways to travel between Cancun and Belize is by bus, but frankly, making connections could easily add up to three hours to your journey because there are no direct bus routes. Additionally, due to the two-country customs circuit, some travel writers say that they’ve had to “lay over” in Mexico overnight and then hook up with bus services at the Belize border. To add insult to injury, the bus you board there may not connect you to the part of Belize you want to reach, so you might have to transfer to yet another bus!

If this sounds exhausting, turn to Cahal Pech for the best solution of all so you don't arrive in Belize with more grey hair than you had when you left Cancun. Rely upon the resort’s transportation services https://www.cahalpech.com/belize-transfers/transportation-cancun-belize-travel/ to get you anywhere you want to go.

If you fly direct, pre-reserved, courtesy transport provided by Cahal Pech will meet you at the airport. If you prefer to travel south by road, staff will pick you up in Cancun and drive you to the resort in seven to eight hours. You relax in your private, air conditioned shuttle, gaze at scenery and let someone else drive for a very reasonable fee.

Returning to Cancun? Arrange a round trip through the Cahal Pech booking service and you’re good to go. Bottom line is that you have lots of options, but if you really want to make it a vacation, put all of your transportation needs into the hands of Cahal Pech. It will just make your life easier, and isn’t that what vacationing is all about?

day trip to belize from cancun

Explore beyond Cancún with these top day trips to Chichén Itzá, cenotes and more © Bucha Natallia / Shutterstock

Cancún is one of Mexico’s crown jewels – a spectacular destination with stunning white-sand beaches and a nightlife that doesn’t stop.

But just beyond this bustling beach city, there’s a world of excursions and adventures that offer everything from a pleasant change of pace to a deeper understanding of the region’s richness, with ancient pyramids, otherworldly cenotes and colonial towns to explore.

Here are a few day trip options from Cancún  and all the info you need to make them happen.

A young couple driving a golf cart alongside a tropical beach

1. Relax in Isla Mujeres

Travel time: 20 to 30 minutes

A quick ferry ride from Cancún transports you to  Isla Mujeres , a laid-back island with backpacker roots. The main town is draped in murals and known for its superstar  Playa Norte – a white-sand beauty with swaying palm trees and tranquil turquoise waters, perfect for a relaxed beach day.

Take a stroll along Calle Hidalgo, a pleasant pedestrian street lined with artsy boutiques and eateries; in the evening, enjoy live music at a handful of open-air bars.

Alternatively, explore the island by golf cart, stopping at  Playa Garrafón for snorkeling and at  Punta Sur , with its crashing waves and Maya temple to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. All are easily done in a day, especially with ferries running from 5:30am to midnight.

How to get to Isla Mujeres from Cancún:  Ultramar operates two ferries from the Zona Hotelera at  Playa Tortugas and  Playa Caracol , and one just north of downtown Cancún at Puerto Juárez. Tickets are M$270 each way.

2. Cenote hop along the Riviera Maya

Travel time: 1 hour

The coastal road (Hwy 307) from Cancún to Tulum is dotted with spectacular cenotes, crystal-clear pools of water found in deep underground caves or in open-air jungle settings.

Spend a day hopping between them, snorkeling and swimming ‘til dark. Most are located just south of Playa del Carmen , though new ones open yearly.

Favorites include  Cenote Azul , a luminous set of open-air cenotes with teal waters, stone walkways and overhangs for jumping into the water; Cenote Manatí, a rare oceanside cenote winding through a lush mangrove forest; and Dos Ojos, twin caverns decked out in stalagmites and connected by a chilly underground river. Snorkel gear rentals are available at each.

How to get to cenotes along the Riviera Maya from Cancún:  Colectivos (shared minivans) are an inexpensive way to travel along Hwy 307; they leave every few minutes from outside Cancún’s bus station and stop at passengers' request.

If they’re full, however, they won’t pick up passengers, so you may have to wait for an open seat between cenotes. Alternatively, rent a car for the day or hire a taxi to take you from spot to spot.

3. Swim with sea turtles in Akumal

Travel time: 1 hour 20 minutes

The calm, clear waters directly in front of the beachfront hamlet of Akumal are designated as a marine conservation area. And with good reason: endangered loggerhead, hawksbill and green sea turtles feed, rest and nest here, and can be spotted in and around Akumal Bay year-round.

Come here for a snorkeling tour of the turtle feeding grounds, where they’re most frequently seen (guides are required to enter the water and are easily hired on the beach); or join staff members of  Centro Ecológico Akumal for an evening walk to see nesting turtles and check on nests. Remember to give turtles plenty of space and do not attempt to touch them.

Before you leave, spend some quality time on the gorgeous palm-laden beach, then head north to Half Moon Bay for an oceanfront meal at  La Buena Vida .

How to get to Akumal from Cancún:  Colectivos from Cancún drop passengers off at the turn-off to Akumal, a dusty 1km (0.6-mile) walk to the beach. For more comfort, rent a car or hire a cab. There’s a parking lot and a taxi stand just outside the town arch.

4. Experience the Yucatan at Xcaret eco-park

Of all the region’s theme parks,  Xcaret is the most ambitious, a sprawling, tropical park on a beautiful oceanfront property and a great place to get a taste of the Yucatan’s offerings. Spend your day floating in underground rivers, walking through butterfly gardens, snorkeling along reefs, and visiting folk art museums and Maya ruins.

There are live performances too, including a spectacular nightly showstopper integrating Mexican folk dances, regional music and even a Maya ball game. For sure, it’s a packaged experience – there are even all-inclusive meal plans – but it makes for a stellar day trip, especially if you’re short on time.

How to get to Xcaret from Cancún:  Xcaret offers round-trip transportation from any Cancún hotel; it’s convenient, but you’re at the mercy of the shuttle schedule. There’s also  ADO bus service several times daily from downtown Cancún. If you have a car rental, there’s free parking. Alternatively, taxi stands make cabbing it easy in either direction.

A row of terraced colonial-era houses painted in pale pastel yellows and oranges

5. Take in the colonial vibe of Valladolid

Travel time: 2 hours

Valladolid is a charming town just inland from Cancún. The central plaza is the heart of the action, a leafy affair surrounded by historic buildings and buzzing with locals. Late afternoons bring regional dance performances plus cart vendors selling elote (corn on the cob) and paletas (popsicles).

Consider visiting one of the town’s museums, including  MUREM or  Casa de los Venados with their respective (and impressive) collections of traditional dress and Mexican folk art. Or stroll down Calzada de los Frailes, a cobblestone street lined with artisanal boutiques and cozy cafes.

End with a tour of  Templo de San Bernardino , an imposing Franciscan church and convent that doubled as a fortress during the Caste War. If you have flexibility, stay overnight to soak in the town’s atmosphere, making time for a dip in one of the local cenotes.

How to get to Valladolid from Cancún:  ADO provides bus services from downtown Cancún to Valladolid several times per day. If you have a car, it’s a straight shot on Hwy 180 (libre) or Hwy 180D, the toll road (cuota) .

Maya ruin of the Temple of Kukulcan at Chichén Itzá, Mexico, a stone pyramid with a square top

6. Wander through the Maya world of Chichén Itzá

Travel time: 2 hours 30 minutes

West of Cancún sits one of the world’s most celebrated archaeological zones –  Chichén Itzá , an iconic Maya ruin with magnificent palaces, pyramids and ball courts. The most recognizable is  El Castillo , a towering 25m-high (82ft) structure positioned to create the shadow of a serpent moving down its staircase at the  spring and fall equinoxes .

The ruins, however, are a must-see year-round – the sprawling site revealing the complexities of ancient Maya life. Arrive early to avoid the midday heat and crush of tourists; consider hiring an onsite guide to gain a deeper understanding of the place and the people who built it. Afterward, cool off at the nearby Cenote Ik Kil or grab a bite in the tiny town of Pisté at  Restaurante Las Mestizas , with a tasty Yucatecan menu.

How to get to Chichén Itzá from Cancún:  First-class buses travel from downtown Cancún to the ruins. If you rent a car, take the well-maintained toll road (Hwy 180D) for the fastest trip; or to see villages along the way, take the libre (Hwy 180). A rail service on the Maya Train is in the works too.

Miriam’s Magical first trip to Belize

Miriam’s Magical first trip to Belize by Miriam Neuman

Okay, here it is:

In late November, I decided that it was high time I visited my good friend Henry in San Pedro, Belize. He had been there for 6 years and I still hadn’t managed to find the money or time to fly down from the freezer that they affectionately call Winterpeg (Winnipeg, Canada).  I picked a great time to go because this would prove to be one of the coldest, snowiest winters that anyone could remember in a long time.

I had no idea exactly where Belize was even located but a quick Google search revealed Belize just South of Mexico. Shouldn’t be too difficult. I researched two ways to get to San Pedro. The first and quickest one is to fly into Belize City on the mainland and then take a plane or ferry to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. All the flights I checked into online involved 2 stop overs in the USA and were marathons of 17 to 22 hours or more of travel time. The other option is to fly into Cancun, Mexico. Direct flights and flights with one stop over are plentiful from Winnipeg. A direct flight is about 5 hours but by the time I booked in the last week in November for a mid-January holiday, there were no direct flights left so I settled on one stop over in Toronto and an eight hour flight for about $730 Canadian. Not bad. Not bad at all.

The trade off is that you still have to get from Cancun to Belize which requires staying overnight in Mexico. But I’d rather travel in the tropics and begin my holiday early than wait around for hours in various US airports. Henry promised he’d meet me in Cancun and we’d make a holiday of it, winding our way slowly South to Belize. And even more fun, we were meeting a third Winnipeg friend in Tulum, Mexico where we thought we’d stay for a few nights before heading South. Tulum It is a lovely laid back resort town with great beaches and a 2h jaunt fromthe Cancun airport. We managed to get a basic oceanfront cabana with a private bathroom  for $45 usd/night for double occupancy at the EcoTulum resort Zahra. The website at describes it as “rustic cabanas at traditional Mayan style, just aside the Caribbean Sea at Tulum”. We liked it so much we ended up extending our stay a few days longer just to laze on the beach, do some yoga and eat fruit we’d bought at the roadside fruit truck.

The ADO buses run frequently between Tulum and Chetumal, Mexico at the Belizian border.  The trip was about 4 hours and the bus was surprisingly comfortable and air conditioned!  What was difficult was that at each bus stop, there were not markers indicating the town we were stopping in and not many people spoke good English to even ask so when we did eventually get off the bus, we weren’t sure we had gotten off at the correct and closest stop in Chetumal. From Chetumal, we had to get through customs and take a taxi to the closest Belizian town of Corozal to catch the Thunderbolt water taxi to Ambergris Caye.

What was magical was the minute we crossed the border to Belize, it all became very easy as everyone’s first language is English!!! What a difference for non Spanish speakers like us. Fortunately, at the border, for a small fee of your choice, there are helpful self appointed Belizian “guides” that act as “go-fers” and get all your papers in order for the customs officers.  We had to do nothing!  Love it.

But by this time, it was getting late and we had just missed the last water taxi to San Pedro.  We were very anxious to finally get there.  Our Belizian Go-fer helpfully suggested that we could take a plane to San Pedro and get on the last flight if we hurried. He quickly got us hooked up with another cab driver and reserved a Tropic Air flight for us. (Not a bad option considering we would have had to lose a day in Corozol AND pay hotel for a night.) It’s a small plane….holds only 10 passengers, so not for those who are nervous being on small air crafts. Once we squeeeezed into our seats, we found the flight to be fast (30 minutes) and very enjoyable. And it took us right into the San Pedro airport near Henry’s home.

As an aside, there is a new option (as of March 2013) out of Cancun and I think this is the one I’d take in future.  Tropic Air has daily flights  from Cancun  to Belize . Leaves at 2:15 Lands at  by 4:00 pm. Their introductory offer round trip of was $394.95 USD. Price is now $484.95 USD but it is still worth it to make it quick and simple if you can score a cheap flight to Mexico.

My stay in San Pedro was not the usual tourist resort stay, since I had the pleasure of staying with Henry in his home in town. My experience was less touristy and more laid back, buying fruit and vegetables at the local fruit stands and cooking at home.  Most notable, I managed to land in San Pedro during the famous Jerry Jeff Walker Camp Belize that happens every year. And this guy has quite a following of fans that follow him to this lovely island paradise. Now I happen to be an improvisational fiddle player and I brought my fiddle along. And amongst Jerry Jeff’s followers are a gaggle of musicians/jammers who coincided exactly with my stay there. So I was happy as a clam as I ran into all these tourists who can actually play!! In addition, Henry, a well known African drummer/percussionist took me to all his gigs. One of his main gigs in San Pedro takes place every Wednesday at Wet Willies Cantina, a rockin’ bar that is located on the beach off a long pier over the water. Henry and his fellow musicians, Tull, Keith and Steve like to call this their Tuesday Jam because they invite tourists who are also musicians to join them in an endless array of well known cover tunes. You never know what will happen at these jams. The boys were gracious enough to allow me, the fiddle player, to do 3 sets with them every Tuesday that I was there. Thanks guys!!

Henry, a hugely talented massage therapist on the island,(just ask tacogirl how to get a hold of Henry if you need the best massage of your life while you are on Ambergris Caye. Believe me, this guy can fix what ever pains ail you!), left me to my own devices some afternoons to wander the island when he had massage clients. I bumped into a slew of Jerry Jeff Walker musicians one afternoon taking over the stage at Wet Willies and managed to find a fiddle lying around and join in. The bar was fun and rocking so it was great to be a a part of that.  Another evening…actually one in the morning, after a Tuesday night jam, we passed the San Pedro square where “street meat treats” were still being sold as the bars let out. And here, I found three young Jerry Jeff tourists from St. Ignacio jamming in the square with guitars and ukeleles. I was happy to join in for an hour of musical fun to the amusement of the hungry bar crowd.

Crazy Canucks Beach Bar at Exotic Caye Beach Resort pays homage to all the Canadians on the island.  They have a great  ” Sunday jam”  that is led by locals and joined by snow bird musicians and other tourists.  Lots of fun, music and dancing there and well attended.  There bar is located right on the beach with a great and has horseshoes for those who like to play.

tacogirl managed to hook me up with a tour of the Marco Gonzalez Archeological Reserve one day. It is a dig of a Mayan Village. The dig is still in process and we had a wonderful tour led by Jan Brown. We were able to see hundreds of Mayan pottery shards spread all over the site and got an idea of the construction and placement of the homes of the Mayan as well as get a feel for the type of vegetation in the area. It was unseasonably rainy that day so the mosquitoes were out in full force. Bring mosquito repellant!! Canadian skin seems to react more to these mosquitoes than the annoying Winnipeg ones back home. There was a cool hermit crab crossing on the site as well.

Ambergris Caye is a charming town where people get around mainly in golf carts. The back roads were dirt and as I mentioned, it was unseasonably rainy in the apparent dry season. In fact, the 2 weeks I was there, it rained quite hard most days with some periods where it let up. I didn’t care because I knew back home they were in 3 feet of snow and it was -35 Celsius. But the dirt roads were lots of fun to navigate with the puddles and rain. One tip: Do not bring nice shoes. My hiking sandals were just the ticket. On the main drag, downtown, where there are touristy stores and restaurants, the streets are paved and the 2 story businesses are very picturesque.

Henry and I left the island 3 times while I was there.  Twice to go into Belize City where he conducts Tai Chi classes.  We stayed at the very wonky Bachelor Inn in Belize City.  I think I remember it being $30 a night but I could be wrong there.  It is a 3 or 4 story hotel of the wonkiest time and is typical of the interesting take on ergonomics and design of the Belizian construction industry. (Translation: there are no ergonomics or esthetics in Belizian vernacular architecture!!) That was a lot of fun. The hotel was fine enough for our stay there as we only needed a place to lay our heads. The room was clean and the owner, Nancy was talkative and very pleasant.

Prices were cheaper on the mainland, so Henry and I made sure we stocked up on chocolate and fresh vegetables and fruit while we were there. One day on the way back from Belize City while waiting for the ferry, a local and enterprising Belizian woman convinced me I needed a pedicure while I was waiting for the water taxi. She just sat right on the pavement and filed my toe nails and did a lovely job painting them pink, and embellishing them with flowers on each big toe. Amazingly, her pedicure lasted as long as my pedicures do back home! Sweet!

One day, when the rain decided to back off, Henry and I took a water taxi to Caye Caulker, a near by resort island.  Here we lay around the Lazy Lizard Bar and swam in the channel where the gentle current actually pushes you along and out around the pier (if you let it). It is certainly a great place to lounge with the locals and the tourists for a day.  Then we hired a golf cart taxi and had the ten minute tour of the small town.  It seemed to be even more tourist based than Ambergris Caye with brightly painted bars and restaurants along the ocean.

Unfortunately, all good things come to and end and I had to go back to winter in Winterpeg, where it was still in a deep freeze.  We took the same flight, taxi and bus ride back except this time we stayed in Playa del Carmen for a night at the Playa del Karma hotel. I highly recommend this hotel.  It is cheap….trying to remember how much…it might have been 40 or 50 a night.  The rooms surround a courtyard full of live green trees and plants and was very relaxing.  We also had a chance to walk down the broad streets of the main drag at night where the bars and discos were just hoping.

As for packing for this trip, I think the only thing I really didn’t account for was the rain. I ended up getting a rain poncho in a local store. If you go by golf cart, you get a lot of rain sliding off the golf cart roof as well as splash up from the road and just plain rain getting in the cart….so an umbrella won’t do. But as this was apparently an anomaly int the usual DRY season, I am sure, that a rain poncho won’t be necessary next time. (I might bring it just in case though.) Really, good sturdy walking sandals are a must.  And the dress on Ambergris Caye is definitely casual. You don’t really need much in the way of clothing. If it does rain, however, the island is very humid and things take a longer time to dry so quick dry clothing is an asset for sure. One thing I would not travel without would be my sarong. I used it as a blanket, a robe, a skirt, a dress and a cover up and it dries really fast.

All in all, it was an amazing vacation.  I am already planning a return visit. And this time, I will be exploring the mainland, so watch out, Belize!!

Laurie Norton grew up dyslexic and was very challenged by the school. She never dreamed she would move to Belize and become a writer. A year after her move to Ambergris Caye, Laurie became an entrepreneur and professional writer starting tacogirl blog in 2007. Since then she has helped many people plan their vacations or move. She also has been published in Great Destinations Belize Guidebook, Moon Guide to Living in Belize, Insight Guides, Island Magazine several times and USA Today. Hi! we have been in Holidays in mayan riviera last year with my wife and my 2 kids, and I would like to report a very useful travel services agency based in Playa del Carmen called Cheel-Beh . I really recommend it, if you are looking for some luxury accommodation, concierge service or even to rent a nice boat hourly for such unique experiences as yachting or sport fishing.

A True Guide to the Maya Train, From My Rides Through 5 Cities

By: Author Tim Leffel

What if you could visit any major tourist site in the Yucatan Peninsula without relying on long bus rides or a rental car? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could hop on a train near the Cancun airport and head south to Playa del Carmen? Or the other direction to Chichen Itza, Merida, Campeche, or Palenque? On the new Maya Train in Mexico, it’s all possible right now.

Maya Train Mexico report by Tim Leffel

Read on for a full report on what this experience is really like. From me you’ll get a first-person report because I rode the Maya Train from Palenque, in the state of Chiapas, all the way to the Cancun airport. I didn’t just ride it though: I spent the night in Palenque, Campeche, Merida, and Valladolid, so I got to experience what it was like getting to and from the stations (which are nowhere near the city centers) and dealing with four ticket purchases, not just one.

Quick Pros and Cons for the Maya Train in Mexico

How was the train? All the details to answer that will be in the sections below, but if you want the short pros and cons version, here you go:

– The train rides are smooth, reasonably comfortable, and there’s plenty of room for your luggage.

– The stations were all half-finished when I rode in late March of 2024, with almost no commercial services, but will be big and beautiful when they’re done.

– Those stations are all in rural areas a long way from the cities they serve though, so you always have to take more public transportation upon arrival to get to where you’re staying.

– You can buy tickets online, but only a maximum of a week in advance, making it tough to plan a vacation ahead of time. Otherwise you can buy them at the station or in some cases, at a ticket vendor in the city.

– The trip from the waiting area to your seat is a long one. The automated machines you find at most modern train stations look to be coming, but none of them were working yet when I rode. So just one or two workers (really National Guard service members) were scanning tickets one by one for 200+ riders.

Tren Maya ticket line

– Each train has a snack bar car that serves food and drink, including alcohol, but it’s small and minimally staffed, so there’s usually a line to wait in. It’s not a dining car with meals you can sit for and eat together.

– The website advertises Wi-Fi but it’s only available on some routes and is instantly overloaded in those cases so it doesn’t function. Cell coverage is iffy once you get outside the cities. Bring a book or a tablet loaded with movies.

– The government website and most articles based on it say there are electrical outlets, but they’re only on the electric-only trains it seems. So yes from Merida to Cancun, but no from Merida on south.

– Ticket prices in the regular section are reasonable, not too far off from what a bus would cost for long distances, but premium class is roughly 60% more and doesn’t provide many extras in return. More on that below.

– There are no sleeper cars as of yet, even though they’re shown on the official website, but they will probably be added when the full loop of the route is open.

– There has been plenty of controversy about the project, which moved at authoritarian Chinese speed, not with the checks and balances you usually expect in a democracy. The environmental complaints alone in the fragile area have been numerous and ongoing. On the other hand, it’s likely that if the government had to go through as much effort as U.S. states do now to start laying track, especially with five states involved, even just one stretch of it would have taken 20 years to finish—if it ever got completed at all.

You won’t have any trouble finding articles about the Maya Train if you do a search online and if that search is on Google, these days you’ll get lots of ads and links to big media brands you’ve heard of like The Washington Post, Travel + Leisure , or Afar . The problem is, the majority of those articles have information that’s just plain wrong and if you get AI answers they’ll be even less reliable because the bots are trained on those same incorrect or outdated articles.

As the train started opening up to passengers at the end of 2023 on limited routes, nearly every major travel media outlet jumped on it with an article, usually with a title like, “The Complete Guide to Mexico’s New Maya Train” or “The Definitive Guide to the Tren Maya.” They were neither complete nor definitive though because the person writing it had not actually set foot on the train. The research was all done from behind a desk, the editors just parroting what the government told them was happening even when it wasn’t.

There are some good articles out there from Yucatan-based bloggers who rode the train from where they lived and reported on it, but Google is waging war on small publishers, so you probably won’t find those anymore unless you use Duck Duck Go or Bing as your search engine instead. There are also a lot of fake websites out there that look official but they’re not. The official one is trenmaya.gob.mx .

Tim Leffel working on a review on the Maya Train through the Yucatan Peninsula

I was  working on an article for Westways magazine, so I didn’t want to put this up before that came out, but now it’s live and I’ve been paid so I’m expanding on what’s in there for my own Cheapest Destinations Blog, with original photos and a comprehensive YouTube video. This way I can give you the whole story on Mexico’s train project in the Yucatan Peninsula and actually show you the cars and stations.

Keep in mind it’s not all open yet. When finished, the project will cover a 1,554 km-long (966-mile) distance that looks like a squared-off “Q.” Right now though, if you travel the whole route it’s Playa del Carmen – Cancun Airport (almost) – Merida – Campeche – Palenque with a lot of stops in between those where you can get off.

If you’re the type that prefers video over text, you can go straight to my YouTube video. Get a drink and settle in though as this is one of the longest I’ve ever posted. It’s a complicated journey.

The Maya Train Route, Now and in the Future

To say this was an ambitious project is putting it lightly. Many locals I talked to on the train ride and in the cities I visited were surprised that the project is running at all, never mind that it started operations just five years after the president took office and announced it. They’re used to grand government announcements that fizzle out or take a decade longer than promised.

I was pleasantly surprised too and how quickly the project got finished and how well-done the actual infrastructure is. These are all-new tracks, so the train is relatively fast (not Spain-fast or bullet train Japan-fast, but much faster than you normally get in the USA or Canada.) They built overpasses over the tracks and so far there are no freight trains on the routes, so the trains only stop when approaching a station.

The routes have opened in phases and the stations are mostly still under construction, even the ones that are boarding passengers. The section to Playa del Carmen was the last one to open, with tickets coming on line just as I was finishing up in March. Later that line will reach all the way to Chetumal and Lake Bacalar near Belize via Tulum, then another line will cut across the Yucatan Peninsula to complete the loop from close to Tulum.

The Maya Train completion date is up in the air because Mexico just had a major election and there’s a new president coming into office. She (yes a she!) is from the same party as the old one though, so she’ll surely continue the project and see it to the finish line since it was his big legacy accomplishment. I’m guessing we’ll see new sections added bit by bit before the year is open and the whole thing will be complete in 2025.

Maya Train Tickets and Prices

Campeche rail station

Tickets for this train are priced by distance, so it doesn’t really matter where you’re headed or how many times you stop off and restart the trip. The further you ride, the higher the price.

So the short trip from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, for instance, won’t cost you very much. If you ride from Cancun all the way to Palenque, however, it’s a different story.

Here are some sample prices to give you an idea, in foreign tourist class and foreign premier class. (Mexican nationals pay less, residents of the states the train is in pay less again. After all, their tax dollars are paying for it.) These prices are calculated at 17 pesos to the dollar, so they will go up or down in dollar terms depending on the exchange rate.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen – $12 and $19

Cancun to Valladolid –

Cancun to Merida – $43 or $69

Merida to Campeche – $34 or $54

Campeche to Palenque – $75 or $120

Palenque to Playa del Carmen – $178 or $285

That last one is as far as you can go as I write this in June of 2024, so that’s the most you could possibly pay. Once the rest of the routes are finished, the long route between Bacalar and Palenque would be the most expensive if you did a big upside-down U instead of going across the peninsula.

Is Premier Class Worth the Upgrade?

I talk about this in the video since I rode in the regular Turista class and the Premier class. I love a good upgrade as much as the next guy and I’ll gladly pay more to be on ETN or ADO buses with three seats across rather than ones with four. The thing is, the premium in cost on those is not so much and you get more legroom to stretch out.

Based on my experience, Premier Class on the Maya Train is not much different than the regular class and isn’t worth the extra money unless you really don’t want to sit next to someone else. Since it only has three seats across, it’s possible to book a single seat with only the aisle next to it.

So far though, that’s the only difference I found apart from an attendant that came around one time in two hours and asked me if I wanted anything. I had him fetch me breakfast so I didn’t have to get up and wait in line in the snack car. I guess the seats must be slightly wider, but they weren’t any more comfortable and didn’t seem to have any extra legroom.

premium class car

Is it worth a 60% premium to get a single seat, a slightly wider seat, and maybe have waiter service? Up to you, but I won’t be repeating that purchase unless they add more perks. If I had an especially wide body though, different story.

Tren Maya Schedules and Logistics

For the first few months this rail line was running, it was a big mess to say the least. The trains started moving before the booking system was even set up and the schedules were changing on a weekly basis. When I tried to book a Saturday trip online to start my journey, the system said there was no train on Saturday. When I asked about that at the station, the ticket window person said, “The system is not very reliable.” She then turned around her screen to show me that it was completely down.

I would love to say that all these problems have disappeared, but here’s what happened this morning when I tried to go to the official website:

site error for buying tickets

Yes, my anti-virus program blocked it because apparently the site is infected with a virus. It likely got hacked due to lax security systems and now nobody can see any official information until they fix it. There is an end-around to the reservations page though, which is on a different domain thankfully. Go here: https://reservas.ventaboletostrenmaya.com.mx/

You won’t see a full schedule there but you should be able to see available times for any day up to a week ahead. In short, the train runs once a day in each direct from Palenque to Campeche, then picks up the pace for the rest of the routes. You’ll find multiple options each day on the most popular routes between Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Merida.

There are multiple stops between Merida and Cancun. I got off in Valladolid and spent the night but I could have also stopped off in Izamal or Chichen Itza.

Valladolid convent at night

Heading south from Campeche, there are stops that in theory could get you to Edzna or eventually to Calakmul when the last section opens, but there’s little infrastructure in place to make that happen after you step out of the lonely stations. See this Train Maya article for another perspective from a recent rider trying to visit those archaeological sites.

Where Should You Stay Along the Route?

La Plancha Park in Merida

Which leads us to where you actually can stay along the route, provided you’re up for taking a shuttle bus once you get to the station. None of these stations are walking distance to anything as far as I can tell. They’re on the outskirts of town, on a lonely new road and surrounded by empty parking lots.

Thankfully someone did think to set up shuttle arrangements though and in Merida the transfer is eco-friendly and pleasant: you board an electric bus that recharges each night and you get dropped off at a really nice park with a food court (tap rooms even!) near the Paseo de Montejo. If you’re not too loaded down, you could walk from there to different hotels including a Wyndham, Hyatt, NH, Courtyard Marriott, and Fiesta Americana.

I really love Valladolid and always enjoy my time there, so I stopped off in the city and spent the night. Once again, I had to get on a shuttle bus, but it was only about a 15-minute ride to the center.

I had never been to Campeche , so I spent two nights there and walked all over the city. I didn’t like it as much as Merida and it’s even hotter, but things do cool off by the water, where there are some fun bars and a good sunset show in the evening. Check the shuttle bus schedule carefully here because the station is waaayyy out of town.

walled city of Campeche on the Maya Train route

I started the trip in Palenque , which probably has the cheapest accommodations you’ll find on this whole route. I paid a shade over 30 bucks for a really nice apartment near the bus station.

I had to take a bus from Villahermosa in the neighboring state of Tabasco because while Palenque has an airport, it doesn’t seem to have any commercial flights currently. It’s worth visiting though because of its spectacular ruins and a jungle area to explore beyond that.

If you want to read more about this journey, you can see my article in Westways if you enter a Southern California zip code. Or check out Perceptive Travel where Lydia Carey tried to go deeper than I did on the train route . It didn’t always go as planned…

train stations in Florida

Thursday 20th of June 2024

Thanks so much for doing this. My wife and I have been working remote for a month in Isla Mujeres outside Cancun the last 3 years and really want to go further afield and do more exploring, but don't have much interest in dealing with rental cars. It's been very frustrating trying to figure out how much of the train is running or how often, but Merida, Valladolid and Campeche are all on the travel wishlist.

You have several trains a day to pick from for those destinations and you can get a bus to the train station from downtown Cancun. 120 pesos.

Monday 17th of June 2024

Thanks for the detailed write-up and the video, Tim. I always enjoy a good train ride and we'd like to make the full loop some day once it's finished.

Tuesday 18th of June 2024

The Bacalar people are not in any hurry for it to get there, but I have a feeling the whole thing will be finished by the end of the year since the new president is from the same party as the previous one.

Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Kane Brown to headline 2025's Crash My Playa Festival

F rom Jan. 15-18, 2025, the Moon Palace Cancún, a AAA Four Diamond Awarded resort on the Northeast tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, will host the milestone 10th anniversary of five-time country music Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan 's Crash My Playa Caribbean concert vacation event.

69 total Billboard country chart-topping hits will be represented via the festival's headliners, Bryan (for two nights), alongside Jason Aldean and Kane Brown, who will make his Crash My Playa debut in 2025.

The event's general on-sale will begin on June 28 at 3 p.m. EDT at crashmyplaya.com . Previous attendees will have early access through an alumni presale starting at 11 a.m. EDT on June 28. Fan club members for Bryan, Aldean and Brown will also be able to purchase presale packages on June 28 at 2 p.m. EDT.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Package prices remain unchanged from previous years.

Bailey Zimmerman, Dustin Lynch, Elle King, Dylan Scott, Jackson Dean, Nate Smith, Tucker Wetmore, Dasha, Ella Langley and DJ Rock have also been announced as appearing at the series of events. Special guests, daily pool parties, and exclusive alumni perks will also be announced.

Moon Palace Cancún also offers activities steps from Crash My Playa's cutting-edge custom concert venue. Guests can relax at the AWE-Spa, play a round at the 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, or enjoy the private beach where the concerts occur.

Crash My Playa's history

Bryan describes a decade of Crash My Playa as a "pinch me moment" that represents "hands down one of (his) favorite times on stage — period."

“Reaching the ten-year milestone for Crash My Playa is a testament to the incredible community of fans and artists who come together each year,” said Brett Keber, Partner at Playa Luna. “We’re honored to continue producing this one of a kind vacation experience with Luke in Mexico.”

"We're honored to continue delivering four nights of country music and a one of a kind vacation experience with Luke in Mexico."

Eight years, 10 No. 1 hits and 50 million singles sold into his mainstream country music career, Bryan's 2013-released "Crash My Party" was the fastest-rising release of his career. Extending a song celebrating the virtues of an impromptu "drop everything and drink" type of night with a four-day party event felt like a logical extension of a song into a brand.

From Jan. 23-27, 2015, alongside Florida Georgia Line and Cole Swindell, Bryan headlined a four-day and five-night beach party series at the Barcelo Riviera Mayaon Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Kelleigh Bannen, Dustin Lynch, Eric Paslay, DJ Rock and yes, Chris Stapleton — eventually a fellow Entertainer of the Year, but then the co-writer of his 2013 hit "Drink A Beer" — also appeared.

A desire for a singular mega beach concert led to then Philadelphia-based CID Entertainment's CEO and musical destination event organizer Dan Berkowitz to land on a set of Mexican resorts able to deliver what he referred to in 2015 as an "unforgettable, intimate event shared by good people in the sun and sand."

Tracking the Remnants of Alberto

By William B. Davis, Madison Dong, Judson Jones, John Keefe, and Bea Malsky

The remnants of Alberto were over Mexico Thursday afternoon Mexico Central Time, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The system had sustained wind speeds of 30 miles per hour.

Where did it rain?

Tropical cyclones typically drop large amounts of rain along and near the storm's path. The slower and more significant the storm’s size, the higher the likelihood of higher rainfall totals. Some storms can drop well over 30 inches of rainfall, like when Hurricane Harvey dropped over 60 inches near Nederland, Texas, in 2017.

What did the storm look like from above?

Satellite imagery can help determine the strength, size and cohesion of a storm. The stronger a storm becomes, the more likely an eye will form in the center. When the eye looks symmetrical, that often means the storm is not encountering anything to weaken it.

Alberto is the first named storm to form in the Atlantic in 2024.

In late May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that there would be 17 to 25 named storms this year, an above-normal amount.

This season follows an overly active year, with 20 named storms — including an early storm later given the official name of “Unnamed.” It was the eighth year in a row to surpass the average of 14 named storms. Only one hurricane, Idalia, made landfall in the United States.

Typically, the El Niño pattern that was in force last season would have suppressed hurricanes and reduced the number of storms in a season. But in 2023, the warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic blunted El Niño’s usual effect of thwarting storms.

The warm ocean temperatures that fueled last year’s season returned even warmer at the start of this season, raising forecasters’ confidence that there would be more storms this year. The heightened sea surface temperatures could also strengthen storms more rapidly than usual.

To make matters worse, the El Niño pattern present last year is also diminishing, most likely creating a more suitable atmosphere for storms to form and intensify.

Hurricanes need a calm environment to form, and, in the Atlantic, a strong El Niño increases the amount of wind shear — a change in wind speed and/or direction with height — which disrupts a storm's ability to coalesce. Without El Niño this year, clouds are more likely to tower to the tall heights needed to sustain a powerful cyclone.
