Stage 3 - Data of the day

data 3 tour

Presented by NTT DATA

2: a historic stage winner….

Already a history maker for African cycling, Biniam Girmay leaves his mark on the Tour de France as Eritrea becomes the 34th nation to win a stage, and only the second from Africa. Riders from South Africa - Robert Hunter (winner in Montpellier, 2007) and Daryl Impey (winner in Brioude, 2019) - opened the way and Biniam Girmay takes things a step further in Turin.

1: And a historic overall leader!

Already an Olympic Champion, a Giro winner, a podium finisher in the Tour de France and La Vuelta… Richard Carapaz found a new way to make history as he becomes the first rider from Ecuador to claim the Maillot Jaune of the Tour de France! All of these performances were unprecedented for his country.

data 3 tour

68,5: GIRMAY FLIES PAST HIS RIVALS

The first bunch sprint of the Tour de France 2024 delivered chills, thrills and speeds! Biniam Girmay covered the last kilometre at an average of 63.3 km/h… And he hit a top speed of 68.5 km/h to move past Mads Pedersen with 50 metres to go. The Dane had hit a slightly higher top speed (68.7km/h) but he faded on the line.

20: CARAPAZ EXTENDS HIS COLLECTION

Richard Carapaz’s first Maillot Jaune comes after his 14 Maglia Rosa (Giro) and 5 La Roja (Vuelta), which makes 20 Grand Tour leader jerseys for the Ecuadorian climber. In this Tour, Primoz Roglic is the rider with most Grand Tour leader jerseys: 55 (11 in the Tour, 37 in La Vuelta, 7 in the Giro). Mark Cavendish is the other rider participating in the Tour 2024 who has led the overall standings of the three Grand Tours.

26: ECUADOR FOLLOWS SLOVENIA

As Richard Carapaz dons the Maillot Jaune, Ecuador becomes the 26th  nation with a rider leading the overall standings of the Tour de France. Frenchmen opened the list in 1903 and they were joined by Belgium in 1904, then Luxembourg (1909)… The latest nation to join the list was Slovenia, when Primoz Roglic rose to power in Laruns during the Tour 2020.

1+1: INTERMARCHÉ-WANTY FOLLOWING THE TRACKS OF ARKÉA-B&B HOTELS

On the day after Arkéa-B&B Hotels took their maiden stage win in the Tour de France, Intermarché-Wanty achieved the same feat! The Belgian team came very close last year when Georg Zimmermann was 2nd  in Issoire. Among the teams participating in the Tour 2024, Uno-X Mobility is now the only outfit that has never taken a stage win.

13: FROM HUSHOVD TO CARAPAZ

Tracing back the history of EF Education - EasyPost, they already enjoyed the Maillot Jaune 13 years ago, in 2011. At the time, the team was named Garmin-Cervélo. And they had a world champion, Thor Hushovd, who swapped his rainbow jersey for the Maillot Jaune for seven days (stage 2-8).

+91%: AN EASY START AND A FURIOUS FINISH

With no rider willing to make the break, the peloton had a slow roll out from Piacenza, covering the first 10 kilometres at an average speed of 31.2 km/h. The pace gradually increased until the bunch went all out in Turin. Richard Carapaz thus covered the last 10 kilometres at 59.7 km/h. That’s an increase in speed of 28.5 km/h (+91%)!

6: GAVIRIA, BACK IN THE MIXAN EASY START AND A FURIOUS FINISH

A stage winner on his very first day in the Tour (in 2018, in Fontenay-le-Comte), Fernando Gaviria struck again three days later in Sarzeau… And then he didn’t return to the Tour. For his second participation, he’s already back in the mix, with a place of 2nd  in Turin. This is the 4th  time the Colombian sprinter finishes in the top-3 of a Tour stage (he was already 2nd in Chartres in 2018).

Tour de France

Power analysis: ranking the tour de france contenders by their best performances of 2024, we dive into the power numbers of tadej pogačar, jonas vingegaard, primož roglič, and remco evenepoel..

Don't miss a moment of the 2024 Tour de France! Get recaps, insights, and exclusive takes with Velo's daily newsletter. >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Sign up today! .

We’re mere days away from the start of the Tour de France , and Tadej Pogačar has stepped into the spotlight as GC favorite. The other top GC favorites — Jonas Vingegaard , Primož Roglič, and Remco Evenepoel — are coming off crashes, injuries, and rollercoasters of race form. This year’s TDF route has plenty to excite each GC contender including lumpy time trials, high-altitude finishes, and 200km classics-style parcours.

While it’s impossible to tell how each rider’s form is, we can take a closer look at their most recent performances to see what they’re capable of. Are there enough TT kilometers for Evenepoel to make up time? Can Roglič hang with Pogačar and Vingegaard in the mountains? We set out to answer as many of these questions as we could.

In this article, we’ll examine the power data of the Tour’s top GC contenders. We looked through hundreds of race files and results sheets to find the standout performances of each rider in 2024.

The Best Climbing Performances of 2024

Pogačar dominated the Giro d’Italia in May, winning six stages and the GC by nearly 10 minutes. His standout climbing performances came on stage 15 to Livigno and stage 20 to Monte Grappa. Both of these stages featured long climbs, plus stage 15 finished at high altitude. Pogačar pushed more than 6.4w/kg for 30 minutes that day, including a huge attack on the Passo di Foscagno at nearly 2,000 meters.

data 3 tour

Pogačar – Attack on the Passo di Foscagno

Time : 14:24

Average Power : 435w (~6.8w/kg)

On the final mountain stage of the Giro, Pogačar destroyed everyone on the double-ascent of Monte Grappa, one of the longest climbs in professional cycling. On the 20th day of the grand tour, Pogačar’s performance was one of the best of all time, pushing well over 6w/kg for nearly an hour.

Pogačar – Monte Grappa

Time : 51:46

Estimated Average Power : 420w (6.4-6.5w/kg)

Now let’s take a look at the other GC contenders. We know that Pogačar is capable of pushing over 7w/kg for 10-15 minutes in the middle of a grand tour —in February, Vingegaard was already dominating on 10- to 15-minute climbs. The Dane won three stages and every jersey at O Gran Camiño, most of which was raced in cold and wet weather conditions.

On stage 2, Vingegaard did ~7w/kg for 11 minutes, and he followed that up with a 6.5w/kg performance for 20 minutes on stage 4. The Dane’s form was building, and he performed even better at Tirreno-Adriatico in March. Vingegaard was pushing 6.6-6.7w/kg for 25-30 minutes that week, and he was hardly being challenged.

In stepped Primož Roglič, Vingegaard’s former teammate and recent winner of the Critérium du Dauphiné. Roglič has been on rocky form since joining BORA-Hansgrohe, but he produced some of his best performances of 2024 at the Dauphiné. On Stage 6, Roglič did ~6.4w/kg for 31min on Le Collet d’Allevard, followed by 6.2w/kg for 32min the following stage on Samoëns 1600. There are great numbers, but when you put them next to Pogačar’s and Vingegaard’s, they don’t look so big.

Best 30-60 min climbs in 2024

  • Pogačar : ~51:46 at 6.4w/kg on Monte Grappa (Stage 20 of the Giro d’Italia)
  • Vingegaard : ~6.7w/kg for 26:10 on San Giacomo (Stage 5 of Tirreno-Adriatico)
  • Roglič : ~6.3w/kg for 31:02 on Le Collet d’Allevard (Stage 6 of Critérium du Dauphiné)
  • Evenepoel : ???

The gaping hole in this analysis is Remco Evenepoel. He’s been the least consistent of the TDF contenders this year, with huge wins and horrible lows. In fact, Evenepoel hasn’t performed above 6w/kg for 30+ minutes in 2024 — though we know from past seasons that the Belgian is more than capable of hitting these numbers. Evenepoel’s climbing form is the biggest question mark heading into the Tour. On the other hand, his time-trialing performance is almost guaranteed.

GC Contenders in Time Trials

Evenepoel is undoubtedly the strongest time-trialist of the Tour’s GC contenders. In fact, Evenepoel is the best time trial rider in the world on most occasions. The 24-year-old is three for three in the individual time trials he’s ridden this year, and he’s taken down some hefty competition including Filippo Ganna and Josh Tarling.

Pogačar, Vingegaard, and Roglič are some of the best time trial riders in the world, but it’s difficult to compare them to a rider like Evenepoel. The Belgian races a significantly different schedule than the others, so they rarely face off head-to-head. In fact, the last time that Pogačar raced Evenepoel in a time trial was the 2022 World Championships (Evenepoel finished third and Pogačar finished sixth, 39 seconds slower than the Belgian).

This year’s Tour de France features two time trials, neither of which is flat. Evenepoel could take a significant amount of time back in the flatter time trial, while Pogačar and Vingegaard could beat Evenepoel in the mountainous stage 21 TT.

Best Time Trials in 2024

  • Pogačar : First (stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia) and secnd (stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia)
  • Vingegaard : Fifth (Stage 1 of Itzulia Basque Country) and ninth (Stage 1 of Tirreno-Adriatico)
  • Roglič : First (stage 1 of Itzulia Basque Country) and thirdrd (stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné)
  • Evenepoel : First (stage 4 of Volta ao Algarve), fourth (stage 1 of Itzulia Basque Country), and firsst (stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné)

Sprints, Punchy Climbs, and Gravel

If Tadej Pogačar has taught us anything, it is that modern cycling is about much more than climbing and time trials. The UAE Team Emirates rider has won on all sorts of terrain, from wet gravel to uphill sprints and everything in between. This year’s Tour route will be won by a well-rounded rider, someone who can smash the time trials, excel on the climbs, sprint for bonus seconds, and conquer gnarly gravel and wet descents.

Pogačar has proven himself as the most well-rounded rider in the world, especially in 2024. In March, he soloed more than 80km to win Strade Bianche, and then he finished third at Milan-Sanremo. One of his most impressive one-day performances of the year came at Liège-Bastogne-Liège where he won by nearly two minutes after attacking on La Redoute. That four-minute puncheur effort could strike fear into Pogačar’s GC rivals who are typically best on 20 to 30-minute climbs.

data 3 tour

Pogačar – La Redoute

Time : 4:08 Estimated Average Power : ~530w (8.2w/kg)

Pogačar has already marked himself as the number one GC favorite for the Tour de France. The data backs him up, and it’s hard to see anyone beating him if Pogačar is at his best. Therein lies the most prominent question: will the GC contenders be at their best for the Tour de France?

Two-time defending champion Vingegaard hasn’t raced since crashing heavily at Itzulia Basque Country. Roglič just won the Critérium du Dauphiné, but he nearly fell apart on the final stage. Evenepoel was far from his best at the Dauphiné, but his win in the TT proved that he’s not far off. The 2024 Tour de France could be one for the history books.

We’ll pause while that sinks in, because, frankly, it’s such an unexpected thing to hear that at first it feels like it can’t possibly be true.

“I’ve had people argue with me: ‘No, no, no, you’re wrong,’” says Mona Scott-Young, Elliott’s manager since 1996 just before that first album arrived. “And I’m like, ‘No, I think I would know. I was there.’

“It’s pretty unimaginable,” Scott-Young continues. “Because she’s had so many milestone accomplishments, right? Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, every imaginable songwriter’s award. And you think of touring as just a natural extension of an artist that has had such an illustrious career.

“But yeah, historically she just has never felt that the time was right. Until now.”

Elliott has periodically popped up at festivals and as a guest artist over the years. Her last Southern California show was in May 2023 when she played a one-off concert at the Yaamava’ Resort & Casino in Highland.

But the only multi-city tour Elliott’s ever done was two decades ago when in 2004 when she opened for Alicia Keys and Beyoncé on the Verizon Ladies First Tour.

Accompanying Elliott on the Out of This World: Missy Elliott Experience tour are such longtime friends and collaborators as Busta Rhymes , Timbaland , and Ciara . It kicks off July 4 in Vancouver, British Columbia, before moving south on the West Coast to Los Angeles where the hip-hop icon and R&B queen plays Oakland Arena on Tuesday, July 9 .

In an interview edited for clarity and length, Scott-Young talked about Elliott’s decision to finally headline her own tour now, her reasons for not doing so earlier, and how she has many albums worth of new music recorded yet has not released a new studio album since 2005.

Q: So how did this happen? How did you learn she was ready to tour?

A: Well, we get offers constantly, which she goes, “Mmm, no, mmm, no.” And a big part of it is because she has such an incredible imagination in terms of what she wants to see happen. I often say it’s like a spectacle. She doesn’t just step onto a stage. It’s got to be all the bells and whistles, because she comes from thinking that people pay good money, and they should get entertained.

For years, she had thought about Vegas. It would be an opportunity for her to plant herself in a space and build out whatever her mind can conceptualize. We would do something where she was static. And so we had taken a quick trip and taken a look at some of the shows that were out there.

And then one day she just called and said, “We should go on tour.” I was like, “Oh, wait, we weren’t just going to be in Vegas? What happened to that?” But our partnership has always been, “You conceptualize it and I will figure out how to make it happen.” And that’s where this crazy journey we’ve been on began.

Q: In the past, how has she decided when she wanted to play a festival or a standalone show?

A: It’s been very random. It could be because of a song that she saw kind of regaining popularity. We had the “Cool Off” (dance) challenge and people really responded well to that. Or she’ll see dance crazes and she’s like, “Oh, I’d love to have my dancers out there on stage.” And I’m like, ‘”Wait, we’re gonna do this show mainly because you wanted to give your dancers an opportunity?” [She laughs]

Like we did the FYF festival (in Los Angeles in 2017) and that was kind of an opportunity for her to have 25-plus dancers on  stage with her. She was like, “That feels like it could be a lot of fun.”

Q: So for this headlining tour, what had to take place to put it together?

A: Oh, good lord, that is a loaded question. We probably have no less than 30 individual group text chains going on every single element. Because again, it’s not just getting on stage with a mic and some dancers, it’s the content that has to be conceptualized. The fans experience this show. It is not going to be something you watch. This is not a passive show, this is a fully immersed experience.

You’re going to go through a range of emotions. And the content, the wardrobe, the choreography, the music, the transitions, everything plays into that to paint this picture that lives in her head.

And the scariest thing to me is this picture is ever-evolving, it’s ever-changing. I’ll get middle of the night texts (from Elliott): “I have an idea.” That’s the scariest words that Missy Elliott can say to me. Because I never know where this idea is going to take me and what it’s going to entail in terms of execution.

Q: One of the things fans will be excited about is that Missy is bringing Busta Rhymes and Ciara and Timbaland.

A: It’s family. That’s what we say all the time, it’s a family affair. When she decided to do this there were so many artists that you could think of that would be great to go with Missy, right? But it was important for her that she delivered on the fans’ expectations. People have wanted to see her and Busta do anything together because they are such kindred spirits.

Ciara has been Missy’s protege and they’ve done some incredible music together And Timbaland is everyone’s longtime collaborator. He’s going to be taking us in and out of the sets, doing his own set. It’s going to be a seamless experience.

Q: After she played the Friends and Lovers festival in Las Vegas last year she did the one show at Yaamava’. Was that a test for a tour or just a a tag-on to the festival?

A: It’s funny, it was just the tag-on to the festival. To be perfectly honest, everything that she put on at the festival was not cheap. So it was like, “OK, Missy, let’s see, we’re going to need another show to help underwrite all of this stuff.” So it was really in support of the festival show.

Q: She was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year — the first solo female hip-hop artist to go in. Did that play a role in the tour this year?

A: It kind of pulled her out. I say a lot she’s like a hermit. She goes into that Bat Cave, she’s making music, you know. You very rarely see her out and about, just a few select appearances. But with that Rock Hall of Fame there was a lot of press and she was out there a lot. And people just kept expressing appreciation and love, and she responds to wanting to kind of deliver on her gift.

So when people kept saying to her again and again, “Oh my God, it would be so great to see you, I’ve been dying to see you,” it made her feel like, “Oh, you know, I probably should do something to give back to the fans.” All the conversations were around Vegas. I think the tour just came about spontaneously because she realized this would give her the opportunity to get out there and meet them where they are.

Q: She told Variety recently that she had six albums worth of music recorded. What’s your sense of that as her manager?

A: The difference with Missy is she does nothing until she feels it’s absolutely the right time. One of her favorite phrases is “My spirit says,” because she really is not only intuitive, but very spiritual. And she’s always looking for those signs and looking to feel 100% reconciled with whatever decision she makes.

And if there is anything that just doesn’t have her feeling that the time is absolutely right she just won’t do it. It’s never motivated by the financial, which, for a manager, it’s kind of like, “Are you kidding me? Are we really saying no to this?” [She laughs] And she’s like, “It just doesn’t feel right.”

She’s probably got more than six albums worth of material. I am sure that one day she will wake up and text me at 3 a.m. and say, “I have an idea,” and it’ll be let’s do the album. She just isn’t moved by anything other than her internal clock.

Stage 3: Biniam Girmay Becomes First Black Man in History to Win a Tour de France Stage

“Now, we are part of the big races; it’s our moment, our time. This win is for all Africans.”

111th tour de france 2024 stage 3

The first flat day meant one thing: all eyes on Cav .

Could he break the deadlock? Would he finally win his thirty-fifth Tour de France stage? After two brutal opening stages, was Mark Cavendish going to best the dozen-plus other world-class sprinters in the peloton to make history?

In the end, Cavendish did not make history.

But history was made.

The course, which ran just over 260 kilometers from Plaisance to Torino, featured a trio of category-four climbs, the last of which came nearly fifty kilometers from the day’s sprint finish.

TotalEnergies’ Fabien Grellier attacked after the day’s second climb, quickly building nearly a one-minute solo lead over the peloton on the backside of the Côte de Barbaresco. As it usually is with a solo attack on a flat stage, Grellier’s aggression was for naught, as he was caught with some twenty-six kilometers to go.

After the Barbaresco, the day sloped gently downward toward Torino, allowing teams plenty of time to organize themselves in the bunch.

Once the race arrived in Torino, the road straightened out as the nerves and pace shot quickly, nearing and exceeding thirty miles per hour. The first sprint stage of a Tour is always a testy affair.

Yet, outside of one crash that collected Soudal-QuickStep’s Casper Pedersen and a slideout by Decathlon-AG2R’s Bruno Armirail, the day’s final few miles appeared to tick on without incident. However, a bigger crash with just under two kilometers to collect a few riders from PremierTech and Cofidis.

In an atypical move for a sprint stage, yellow jersey-wearer Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) spent the final stretch of the race toward the front of the group. It was a move that was one-part self-preservation, one-part necessity, given how tight the top standing of the Tour was after its opening two stages.

Meanwhile, pre-stage favorite Jasper Philipsen’s chances took a hit when his uber leadout man Mathieu van der Poel caught a flat with just over five kilometers to go and was unable to claw back to the peloton.

Finally, as the peloton took a final few hard turns into the day’s last straightaway, Intermarché-Wanty’s Biniam Girmay appeared pinned to the barrier. But he elbowed out some space for himself, besting Movistar’s Fernando Gaviria and Lotto-Dstny’s Arnaud de Lie.

In doing so, Girmay, a native of Eritrea, became the first Black man to win a stage at the Tour de France.

A lot of people are tuning in to this year’s Tour expecting to see a historic moment.

We just did.

“Ever since I started cycling, I’ve always dreamed of being part of the Tour de France. But now, I can’t believe it. To win the Tour de France in my second year in a big bunch sprint is unbelievable for me,” Girmay said after the finish.

“I just want to thank my family, my wife, all the Eritreans, and Africans; we must be proud. Now, we are part of the big races; it’s our moment, our time. I want to say congrats to my whole team because we haven’t had a victory yet [in the Tour de France]. But now is our moment, and I’m super happy. This win is for all Africans.”

Bernhard Langer expects 'very emotional' DP World Tour farewell in Munich

Bernhard Langer says the goodwill from players and fans alike will make for a “very emotional” farewell appearance on the DP World Tour at the BMW International Open in Germany.

The European great, Germany’s most successful player of all time, will make his 513th and final appearance on the DP World Tour this week at Golfclub München Eichenried.

Since his debut appearance in 1974, Langer has won 42 titles on the DP World Tour across five decades – a feat bettered only by the late, great Seve Ballesteros.

The two-time Masters champion continues to enjoy success on PGA TOUR Champions, the 50-and-over circuit, at the age of 66, but his 23rd appearance at Germany’s most historic professional golf tournament will mark the end of this chapter in his illustrious career.

“I don’t know yet (how I will react)," said Langer, who arrives in Germany having played at the U.S. Senior Open last week. “I've never said goodbye to anything so far in terms of golf, this is going to be a first experience and I have a feeling it's going to be very emotional.”

Langer was set to make his final appearance at the Masters Tournament in April, but that original plan was pushed back by a year because of an Achilles tendon tear playing pickleball in February.

He was back playing less than three months later on the Champions Tour, where he holds a record 46 career titles.

“I'm feeling much better,” he said. “It's five months today since the operation and things are getting better and better.

“So, I’m starting to walk more and more. It’s still a bit difficult at times, but golf is not a problem.

“I can rotate pretty good. I can transfer the weight. I’m just a little weak, my calf muscle is much smaller on my left leg than my right leg. My balance is not quite there, but we'll work on it.”

Langer last played at the BMW International Open, where he has finished second on five occasions, more than a decade ago in 2012, and he is anticipating a difficult challenge on an exacting layout as he plays in a regular DP World Tour event for the first time since 2018.

“It means a great deal, just to play in front of the home crowd. And hopefully I can make the cut, but I hear the golf course is a lot longer than it used to be, and that's a challenge for me.

“I'm getting shorter, and the course is getting longer and that's not a good combination.”

The sense of this being a fitting finale for Langer on the DP World Tour is made more prevalent, with this week’s host venue being nearby to where he made some of his first steps in the game.

“I grew up about 45 minutes from here,” he explained. “I worked as an assistant professional 30 minutes from here at Munich Country Club.

“I have a lot of friends, some relatives and just people that have been with me, supported me for many, many years in the game of golf, and obviously I've played this tournament many times.

“It’s the only one I haven't won yet in Germany. So it was always tricky, but I’m glad to be back.”

Langer will play alongside countrymen Marcel Siem, who won his sixth DP World Tour title last week at the Italian Open presented by Regione Emilia-Romagna, and fellow two-time major winner Martin Kaymer.

As it happened: Another chaotic final bunch sprint on Tour de France stage 5

Tour de france: tadej pogačar moves into maillot jaune as kévin vauquelin solos to victory on stage 2.

Vingegaard shows sparks of great form following his rival on the Côte de San Luca

Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) delivered back-to-back glorious breakaway days at the Tour de France for the home nation, in the Italian Grand Départ no less, netting the stage 2 victory to Bologna after attacking away solo from his fellow escapees on the famous San Luca climb with 14km to go.

The 23-year-old Frenchman powered away from Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility), who took second, and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) after they all got into the day’s early break 190km from the finish, proving the strongest on the stunning 1.9km climb which averages over a 10% gradient.

The San Luca climb brought the best of Italian cycling to the biggest bike race on the planet, with a cacophony of noise welcoming both the day’s early breakaway and the peloton behind who were fighting for the yellow jersey.

As the GC fight unfolded some three minutes down, it was déjà vu from the 2023 edition as Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) exploded into life on the second ascent, forcing Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) into a response.

What the move did was answer all the questions posed in the cycling world from April when Vingegaard crashed at Itzulia Basque Country right to June 20 when he was announced on Vimsa’s Tour roster - would he be at his best?

The answer was a resounding yes, as Vingegaard was the only rider able to follow the superstar Slovenian in his brutal acceleration. Quickly, other GC hopefuls such as Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) - saw the two true best GC riders in the world move away.

Working together, Pogačar and Vingegaard navigated the descent back down to Emilia-Romagna’s capital to try and maximise their gains, as those behind struggled to put together a concerted chase with UAE and Visma teammates obviously not helping.

Evenepoel put in a stunning effort on the descent and flat run to the line to catch the top two finishers from the past three Tours de France, with Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) in his wheel, before sprinting to the line.

With the drama unfolding behind, Vauquelin rode to the finish with a 45-second gap at the crest of the climb enough to guarantee him victory. Staff waited nervously at the finish, breakaway companion and teammate Christián Rodríguez celebrated in front of TV cameras and Arkéa-B&B Hotels awaited their first-ever Tour de France stage victory after being founded in 2005.

Once the count was confirmed, Pogačar was confirmed as the new leader of the Tour de France , taking over from Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) who he dropped on San Luca, taking the yellow jersey for the first time since the 2022 race when Vingegaard dropped him on the Col du Granon.

“It was really hard for me but I’m really happy. I had a perfect day out in the breakaway. I have to thank Christian for his role in the way he helped me get through to win the stage. He put me in the perfect position and I knew I was going to be able to attack,” said Vauquelin after taking the biggest win of his career.

“Not until the last moment” did he dare to think he had it wrapped up “because I was constantly asking about time and what I could do.”

For a young Frenchman, even making his debut at the three-week race was a triumph. A stage win extended beyond his wildest dreams, another French fairytale in as many days at the Italian opener of the Tour de France,

“I wanted to take part in the Tour, that was the original dream,” he said. “To now win a stage in it, well that’s amazing and for the team as well - it just makes me incredibly happy.”

How it unfolded

Stage 2 got underway from Cesenatico, where homages were paid to the late Italian cycling legend Marco Pantani in his hometown. It was another hot day andthe seaside town had turned yellow 26 years on from their controversial hero ‘Il Pirata’ taking the Giro-Tour double in 1998.

Director of the Tour de France Christian Prudhomme waved the flag to get racing underway just after midday and it didn’t take long for Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech) to take the initiative and attack.

Behind him was polka-dot jersey Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility) who was very active for the second day running and his second launch off the front with 190km to go would form the day's move.

Joining the powerful Norwegian was Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ), Axel Laurance (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech), Nelson Oliveira (Movistar), Kévin Vauquelin, Christián Rodríguez (both Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Mike Teunisson (Intermarché-Wanty), Bram Welten (DSM-Firmenich PostNL), Harold Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan) and Jordan Jegat (TotalEnergies).

With tough winds in the Emilia Romagna plain, the DSM-Firmenich PostNL-led peloton didn’t give much chase in the opening flat 50 kilometres, allowing the big group to build an eight-minute advantage.

The gap to the leaders only started to go down to 6:30 over the Côte de Monticino and Côte de Gallisterna, with GC teams ensuring their positioning was optimal.

The action in the peloton was knocked off again as the peloton rode through the Imola race track. 2024  marks 30 years since motor racing lost the great Ayrton Senna at the  track, with the Tour honouring the Brazilian in its passing.

As they accelerated away from the Formula 1 arena inside the final 100km, all eyes turned to the intermediate sprint point in Dozza, where the bad luck continued for Visma-Lease a Bike.

Both Wout van Aert and Matteo Jorgenson went down with Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers) and sustained cuts and grazes but a thumbs up from the Belgian signalled that it was majorly superficial.

The pace behind had been upping until this point when the small crash saw the GC teams and anyone chasing stop their efforts. The gap to the breakaway ballooned back out to a new high of 9:22 with 60km remaining and the hardest climbs to come.

With the final climb approaching before the entrance onto the Bologna-San Luca circuit, the Côte de Montecalvo, the GC teams started getting nervous again, ensuring they were at the front of the peloton before heading down to the city.

The peloton sped up on the climb, reducing the gap to 6:00 from the leaders, knowing how important the first lap of the San Luca circuit would be to ensure their leaders didn’t lose any time.

Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny) led the way for Maxim Van Gils over the steep 3km climb, hoping to get the puncheur into the white jersey that he was wearing but not leading the classification for, but it was a curious move given how he was the only domestique helping with 40km to go.

More red and blue jerseys began to appear for Lotto-Dstny, as did Lidl-Trek and all the GC teams, with the narrow entrance onto the first ascent of San Luca approaching. The peloton crossed the finish line for the first time 4:17 down.

Incredible crowds welcomed the break on the first ascent and it was cagey until under-23 World Champion Laurance launched an explosive move.

Visma-Lease a Bike led the peloton further down the road and onto the lower slopes, with Van Aert and Tiesj Benoot doing the work on the front to protect Vingegaard. This is where the gap stabilised at 3:30.

The break came back together over the top of the climb to make it a group of 10 again on the first descent back down to Bologna which would be the decider for the stage victory later on but exploded when a Teunissen attack prompted Oliveira, Vauequelin and Abrahamsen to get away.

The trio fought out the final ascent to San Luca, with Vauquelin much too strong for his companions as would be the case for Pogačar and Vingegaard when they reached the second ascent in the GC group. The Frenchman would do on to take Arkéa's first Tour win.

Poor positioning at the base did for Roglič and Evenepoel who were put on a small gap. The Belgian managed to reduce this with Carapaz in his wheel on the run for home, but Roglič was resigned to finishing in the yellow jersey group with Bardet and his climbing domestiques.

Ticketmaster confirms data breach, won't say how many North American customers compromised

Ticketmaster confirmed that hackers accessed customers personal information.

Customers last week began posting notices Ticketmaster sent notifying of their involvement in the breach.

The notice, included in a filing with the Maine Attorney General, says that "an unauthorized third party obtained information from a cloud database hosted by a third-party data services provider," between April 2 and May 18.

The company said the breach affected greater than 1,000 customers in the filing.

PC Mag reported Friday that a hacking group called ShinyHunters claimed to have stolen 1.3TB of data from the ticket broker.

Ticketmaster pointed to a support document when asked for comment but did not provide further comment. The document says that the breach involves customers who purchased tickets with the company in North America.

Accessed information, "may include email, phone number, encrypted credit card information as well as some other personal information provided to us" the page says. The company says they believe that customers who have not been notified are not involved in the breach.

Lawsuit pending in Ticketmaster data breach

California residents Cynthia Ryan and Rosalia Garcia filed a lawsuit over the data breach in May in California’s Central District Court.

The pair allege that both Ticketmaster and Live Nation failed to properly secure their personal information such as full names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, ticket sales and event details, order information and partial payment card data.

The information was then listed for sale for $500,000 on the dark web, the lawsuit alleges.

“[The] compromised payment data includes customer names, the last four digits of card numbers, expiration dates, and even customer fraud details,” the lawsuit reads.

Live Nation made a regulatory filing May in which the company said  "a criminal threat actor''  tried to sell Ticketmaster data on the dark web. Live Nation is investigating the data breach.

Ticketmaster data breach: what to do

Ticketmaster is offering customers identity monitoring services through TransUnion according to the notice. Customers must enroll within 90 days of receiving the notice.

The company recommends that customers monitor their credit and bank accounts for signs of suspicious activity.
