How To Use Metamask On Safari & Macbook

Jay Wilkins

  • Last Updated - December 19, 2022

use metamask on safari

Metamask is unarguably the leading crypto wallet for the Ethereum ecosystem and crypto assets on other EVM-compatible networks compatible with the wallet. It is available on both Android and iOS operating systems as a mobile app and on desktop as a browser extension on many of the top web browsers available for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems.

Safari on the other hand is the default browser on Apple devices running on the Mac operating system and the go-to choice for most users in the Apple ecosystem when it comes to accessing the web and consuming web-related content.

If you’re a crypto enthusiast who uses a device running on Mac and Safari to access the web, you might be asking – is it possible to use Metamask on Safari (and Mac)?

Well, in this article you will find out if Metamask is compatible with Safari browser as well as some alternative methods to use Metamask on your device running on macOS (and iPadOS).

Is There A Metamask Extension For Safari?

Metamask currently doesn’t support Safari and there is no Metamask extension for the browser.

There are rumors that a Metamask extension for Safari could be in the works but as of the time of compiling this article, Safari is not supported by Metamask.

As of right now, the Ethereum wallet is only available as a browser extension on Mozilla Firefox and other Chromium-based browsers including Google Chrome, Brave browser, Opera, and Microsoft Edge.

How To Use Metamask On Mac

Since Metamask is not compatible with Safari which is the default web browser on Mac devices, you will need to download and install an alternative browser supported by Metamask to use the crypto wallet on your Macbook or device running on macOS.

As we mentioned earlier, Metamask is currently only available on Firefox and other Chromium-based web browsers including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Brave browser.

Here is how to install and configure Metamask on Mac.

Step 1: Download and Install a Metamask-supported browser.

The first step to installing Metamask on your Mac is to download any of the web browsers currently supported by Metamask.

We recommend installing Google Chrome as is the most popular and widely used web browser out there and is fully supported by Metamask.

To download the Google Chrome browser on your Mac device, simply launch Safari, navigate to the official  Google Chrome download page , and hit  [Download Chrome] .

Now, wait for the download to complete. Once the download is complete, open the file named “ googlechrome.dmg” .

In the window that opens, find  Chrome  and drag the icon to the  Applications folder .

Next, enter your admin password and Chrome will be installed on your device.

Alternatively, you can download any of the other popular web browsers supported by Metamask including  Mozilla Firefox ,  Brave browser ,  Opera , and  Microsoft Edge . All of these browsers are available as native software on macOS and can be installed via their various official websites (linked).

Step 2: Go to the Metamask website and install the browser extension.

Next, you will need to install the Metamask extension on your selected browser. Since we installed (and recommended installing) Google Chrome earlier, we will be showing you how to install the Metamask extension on Chrome. The process is similar on all other web browsers supported by Metamask.

To install the Metamask extension on Chrome, simply launch the Chrome browser on your Mac device and  visit the Metamask download page  and click  [Install Metamask for Chrome] .

click add to chrome metamask

After that, you should be redirected to the official page for the Metamask extension on the Chrome Webstore website.

Next, click  [Add to Chrome]  to download and install the wallet on your browser.

install metamask on chrome webstore

For other browsers, the process is similar. On the Brave browser, you can install the extension directly  from the Chrome Webstore  while you have to install the extension (addon) from specific stores for other browsers.

Step 3: Launch the extension, create a new wallet, and back up your secret recovery phrase.

After installing Metamask on your browser of choice, launch the extension or addon (depending on your browser) and click on the Metamask icon on your browser to launch the wallet.

Click  [Create a Wallet]  and back up  the secret recovery phrase  of your newly created Ethereum wallet safely then hit  [Next] .

Alternatively, you can click [Import wallet] to import your existing Ethereum wallet into Metamask using the 12-word secret recovery phrase of the wallet.

select setup options new wallet old wallet

Step 4: Create a password for your wallet.

Now create a password for your wallet and confirm the password by typing it again. After that, tick the checkbox to agree with Metamask terms of use and click  [Create]  to register your new password.

enter password i agree create

And that’s it. You have successfully created a Metamask wallet on your Mac device.

Since Metamask is currently not compatible with Safari which is the default browser on macOS, we recommend installing any of the popular Metamask-compatible web browsers to use Metamask on your device.

Does Metamask On iPad?

Yes, Metamask does work on iPad via the Metamask mobile app which is available on the Apple App Store.

To use Metamask on your iPad, head over to the  official Metamask app preview page on the App Store  and install the app from there.

Once the installation is complete, launch the app by tapping the Metamask logo then create a new Ethereum wallet or import your existing wallet into the app using its secret recovery phrase.

After creating a new wallet or importing your existing wallet into the Metamask app on your iPad, you should be able to access all the features of the crypto wallet including sending and receiving various cryptocurrencies on compatible networks, purchasing NFTs, and accessing your favorite DApps through the inbuilt decentralized apps browser, swapping tokens amongst others.

You cannot use the Metamask extension on the Chrome app on your iPad because it is  currently impossible to install any extension  on the Chrome app for iPadOS. You can only install Chrome browser extensions on devices running on Windows, macOS, or Linux.

For Safari on iPad, it is quite different and this is because while the Safari app for iPad supports extensions, Metamask doesn’t currently have a browser extension for Safari.

Wrapping Up

Safari is the go-to choice for many macOS users but unfortunately, the browser is not supported by Metamask since there is currently no Metamask extension available for Safari on both Macs and iPads.

If you’re a macOS user who uses Safari and wants to get started with Metamask, we recommend downloading any of the browsers supported by the Metamask team. These browsers include Mozilla Firefox and other Chromium-based browsers including Google Chrome, Brave browser, Opera, and Microsoft Edge.

After installing a supported web browser on your device, go to the official Metamask download page and install the correct Metamask browser extension for your selected browser. Once the extension is installed, you can either set up a new wallet or import an existing wallet to start accessing all the features of this wallet.

On iPad, you cannot install Metamask on Chrome because the Chrome app for iPad doesn’t currently support browser extensions. Also, you cannot install Metamask on Safari for iPad and this is simply because there is currently no Metamask extension for Safari.

To use Metamask on your iPad, you need to install the official Metamask app from the App Store.

And that will be it. We hope this guide helped you learn how to use the Metamask crypto wallet on your Mac or iPad device.

There are different types of crypto wallets, including hot and cold. Among hot wallets, browser extension wallets are increasingly popular because they are easy to use without installing any software.

This article will examine three of the top browser extension wallets you can use to manage your crypto portfolio.

What Are Browser Extension Wallets?

Crypto wallets are known as either software or hardware. Browser extension wallets aren't typically considered "software wallets," although they're part of the browser software. They are browser extensions you can access using a supported browser. However, they are what's known as a hot wallet, which is a crypto wallet with an active internet connection.

The software runs on the browser as a non-custodial wallet, with all the information stored in it. Browser wallets are mostly built for certain blockchains and may not support tokens from other blockchains.

Browser wallets are excellent for interacting with decentralized applications (DApps), decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and NFTs specific to their respective blockchains. You can connect a browser wallet to a decentralized exchange and use it to buy or sell tokens and NFTs or to use one DApp or the other.

These wallets can also be used to stake cryptocurrencies and contribute to liquidity pools, and the users can earn rewards from such activities.

If you're considering using one, here are the three top browser extension crypto wallets.

1. Metamask

Metamask is by far one of the most popular browser-based crypto wallets. With over 30 million active monthly users, the wallet is among the most used of any software in the crypto space.

Metamask primarily enables users to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. You can easily access Ethereum wallets through the browser extension and interact with DApps.

Interestingly, Metamask also has a mobile app that you can use to access the same features as with the browser extension.

It has a synchronization feature that allows you to sync the browser extension and mobile app to run just one wallet on the browser or your mobile device.

The wallet was created mainly for ERC-20 tokens, so it supports Ethereum-based altcoins but not Bitcoin. It also supports BEP20 cryptocurrencies built on Binance Smart Chain, giving users access to more tokens, better fees, and faster transaction speed.

Binance Smart Chain and Ethereum are currently the two supported blockchains, and you can switch between them, depending on which you wish to use. You can also add layer 2 solutions, like Polygon, to Metamask.

Notably, the wallet supports Trezor, Ledger, Lattice, Keystone, and AirGap Vault hardware wallets, so you can use it to access tokens you store in any of the cold wallets. If you are new to Metamask, learn how to set Metamask up and use Metamask to buy tokens .

Phantom is a browser extension wallet that works with major browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Edge. Like Metamask, it is a wallet accessed as a browser extension and used to interact with DApps.

Unlike Metamask, it is a Solana-based wallet. However, it's used for the same purposes as Metamask, including buying, selling, sending, receiving, storing, and swapping tokens. You can also use Phantom to collect NFTs on the Solana blockchain.

The wallet can be considered a rival to Metamask, considering that Solana is an Ethereum killer . It also has a mobile app that can be synchronized with the browser extension, giving you full access to the wallet using any of the platforms.

Ledger, the leading hardware wallet, is supported on Phantom, allowing you access to your Solana-based tokens whenever you want. The growing popularity of Phantom can be attributed to the growing popularity of Solana against Ethereum due to the huge gas fees on the latter.

Security-wise, Phantom is just like Metamask, as it uses a password to secure the wallet and a 12-word recovery keyphrase to back up the wallet.

Nami is another top browser extension wallet. The non-custodial wallet is based on the Cardano blockchain and used to interact with DApps and other applications on the blockchain.

It is also a multi-asset wallet that supports several cryptocurrencies built on Cardano.

With it, you can manage delegations to stake pools and minting, and it will soon be used to interact with smart contracts after the Alonzo hard fork. It also supports Trezor and Ledger, two of the best hardware crypto wallets to secure your assets.

Although Nami is not yet as well known as Metamask or even Phantom, Cardano has plans to expand and become more competitive against top blockchains. This makes it a potentially big browser wallet since everything you can do on Cardano can be done through the wallet.

Unlike Metamask and Phantom, Nami currently doesn't have a mobile app, so it is only accessible from the supported browsers, which include Chrome, Brave, and Edge. However, this will likely change in the future, as Cardano is aggressively developing every area of its ecosystem.

Nami has a simple user interface that anyone can use, no matter their level of crypto or tech knowledge. You can easily set it up within minutes and use it to interact with the Cardano blockchain.

It also has the same security features as Metamask and Phantom, which include a password and recovery phrase.

One interesting thing is that it lets you set a username for each specific wallet you create. This is a cool feature that could make your wallet more personalized without risking your personal data.

Which Is Your Favorite Browser Crypto Wallet?

Although these are all browser wallets that work similarly, you'll use them differently depending on the blockchain.

Metamask is the oldest and most popular, mainly because of Ethereum's reputation as the go-to network for all things DApps and smart contracts.

However, blockchains such as Solana and Cardano are catching up and could become major competition for Ethereum, so Phantom and Nami could soon become formidable competitors.

Apart from that, MetaMask also boasts sophisticated mobile applications that can easily be connected to multiple third-party websites. Here's how users can add MetaMask Extension on Apple Macbook or Safari browser.

MetaMask only supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Brave browsers and is not available on Safari, but the Ethereum wallet has recently launched its app for IPhone users which can be downloaded via the apple store.

Instead, users must either download another browser (as referenced below), or consult the iOS MetaMask application that offers support for Apple users.

iOS 15 does seem to allow iPhone devices to use extensions on Safari, although this does not include MetaMask just yet. A third-party Github program has popped up, however, allowing users to download and use the MetaMask extension on Safari.

MetaMask has recently introduced a facility that allows users to trade cryptocurrency via Apple pay.

Users will now be able to purchase crypto via Apple pay, where transfers will first be redirected to Wyre crypto exchange that facilitates buying and selling of multiple cryptocurrencies.

Best crypto wallets in 2021

The best crypto wallets are essential for managing your cryptocurrency investment. Here's how to pick the right one for you

Best crypto wallets

The information on this page should not be used as investment advice. Tom's Guide can not tell you whether you should invest in a particular cryptocurrency, or in the market as a whole. Crypto prices can go down as well as up and you could get back less than you put in.

Cryptocurrency storage can be complicated. But with this guide to the best crypto wallets, we hope to make it easier to understand.

Technically speaking, crypto wallets don’t actually store your funds — coins never leave the blockchain; they just get transferred from one “address” to another. Wallets create your public address so you can receive coins and securely store your private key so you can send coins.

Another fun fact: you don’t actually need a wallet to store your cryptocurrency, whether it's Bitcoin , Ethereum , Dogecoin or any other of the top cryptocurrencies . Major crypto exchanges such as Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken allow you to store your holdings right there in the exchange. (Just like you hold your stock with your trading platform/broker.) You can even buy and store some cryptocurrencies on Robinhood and PayPal . But for security and other reasons, you may want a separate “non-custodial” crypto wallet.

  • Here are the  top cryptocurrencies  by value right now
  • What is Ethereum?  Price, how to buy, vs Bitcoin, latest news and more
  • Plus: Internet Computer is new crypto worth $35 billion in three days

The main thing that differentiates cryptocurrency from traditional currency is that it is decentralized, meaning no government or other entity controls it. And for that reason, you may want to take extra precautions against theft or loss of your crypto assets by taking control of its security yourself. That’s where the best crypto wallets come in.

Today’s crypto exchanges might be secure enough for the average person, but if you want to get serious about locking down your cryptocurrency, a wallet that is not owned or managed by any third party is the safest method of storage. You, and you alone, have the private key to access your wallet. While it’s unlikely that a major crypto exchange will get compromised or dissolve, they are still relatively new businesses (compared to banks) and are frequently targeted by the bad kind of hackers.

Another reason people choose to store their cryptocurrency in a wallet is that wallets are required to make certain kinds of crypto transactions — e.g., interacting with blockchain apps to do things like buy and sell NFTs . That’s a bit advanced for this guide, but the bottom line is that if you have a large amount of money invested in crypto and/or you want to transact with, not just invest in, crypto, you’ll want one of the best crypto wallets.

Best crypto wallets: Hardware wallets vs. software wallets

Why you can trust Tom's Guide Our writers and editors spend hours analyzing and reviewing products, services, and apps to help find what's best for you. Find out more about how we test, analyze, and rate.

The most important thing to know before choosing one of the best crypto wallets is that there are two main categories: hardware wallets and software wallets, also referred to, respectively, as cold and hot.

Hardware (cold) wallets are physical electronic devices and have a cost to purchase; software wallets are free and make it more convenient to access your funds, but they are less secure because they are connected to the internet.

Think of hardware wallets like savings or investment accounts, and software (hot) wallets like the leather wallet you carry around in your purse or pants pocket — they’re not for holding your life savings in crypto, just what you may need or want to transact on a daily basis.

Within the software wallet category, there are three types of wallets: web, desktop, and mobile. Below we explain the similarities and differences between all four kinds of wallets and note our favorites of each, which of course will vary depending on personal preferences.

Best crypto wallets: Back. It. Up.

One final note that pertains to all crypto wallets: make sure you never, ever, misplace your recovery (aka “seed”) phrase, the string of random words that are the key to gain entry to your wallet. We’ve all heard the stories of would-be crypto fortunes lost because of forgotten passwords. While those days are pretty much behind us — the technical hoops you had to jump through to buy and store crypto in the early years were immensely complex compared to today — it is still a real possibility.

Since you and you alone are given your seed phrase — there’s no resetting this password — it is vital that you not lose it. As long as you have it, you should always be able to access your wallet. But don’t just hold onto your seed phrase: protect it as you would your coins, as anyone with the phrase can steal your crypto.

Best crypto wallets: Best hardware crypto wallet

Best crypto wallets — Ledger Nano X

A hardware wallet is a physical electronic device (they look like thumb drives) that contains your personal cryptocurrency private key and allows interaction with various blockchain networks. (Remember, every cryptocurrency has its own blockchain, or ledger, that keeps track of all transactions.) Most of the leading hardware wallets can support hundreds of different cryptocurrencies.

Hardware wallets connect to your computer through a USB port or Bluetooth (USB is the more secure method). These are the most secure crypto wallets because they are not connected to the internet.

One drawback to a hardware wallet is that since you’ll want to keep it in a safe place (e.g., a home safe or even a safety deposit box) and not connected to your computer or mobile device, it won’t be as readily available as a software wallet would be for making transactions. Hardware wallets are therefore best suited to the buy-and-hold crowd, those dealing with very large sums of crypto, and the ultra-paranoid.

What if you lose the device or forget your PIN code? Don’t worry — as long as you are using a hardware wallet from a respectable brand (Ledger and Trezor are the market leaders), your seed phrase will enable you to recover your PIN or transfer your funds to a new device.

Our recommendation: The Ledger Nano X is small, moderately priced ($119), and easy to setup and use. It features a Bluetooth connection to manage your crypto on the go and supports over 1,500 different crypto assets. For security it features a PIN code and 24-word recovery phrase.

Best crypto wallets: Best web crypto wallet

Best crypto wallets — Metamask

Like all software, or hot, wallets, a web wallet can be easily created and used instantly. As noted above, they’re great for frequently accessing your crypto funds. Of course, since it’s connected to the internet, what you gain in convenience with a web wallet, you lose in security.

Web wallets interact with cryptocurrency blockchains through a plug-in on your web browser. That might sound complicated, but a web wallet is actually the simplest type of crypto wallet there is. Once you’ve installed the browser extension, you don’t have to download or install anything in order to access your crypto funds and transact with them. And transacting can be more than just buying, selling, and trading different crypto tokens: leading web wallet MetaMask describes itself as “a bridge that allows you to visit the distributed web of tomorrow in your browser today.”

Our recommendation: The MetaMask extension wallet is a browser extension that lets you run Ethereum-enabled apps and websites — and securely store your Ether (ETH) and the hundreds of cryptos that are based on ETH tokens, including stablecoins and NFTs — on your regular old browser (e.g., Chrome, Safari, Firefox). It’s quick and easy to install and while not for total beginners, it has a fairly intuitive interface.

If you want to store Bitcoin, which can’t be used to transact with apps on the Ethereum network, this is not the web wallet for you. For Bitcoin holders, we recommend the Blockchain.com wallet , which has a clean look and makes it simple to send, request, swap, buy, and sell Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, and about 10 other cryptos. It also has a linked mobile app.

Best crypto wallets: Best desktop crypto wallet

Best crypto wallets — Exodus

A desktop wallet, as you might expect, is software that you download to your computer desktop. It’s more convenient for transacting than getting out a piece of hardware, but still less convenient than a web or mobile wallet (see below) that is already connected to the internet.

To use a desktop wallet, you launch the file and enter your password. Of course you should keep your password safe, but it is also recommended that you backup your wallet file in case your computer decides to stop working one day. Desktop wallets are good for the person who spends most of their time on a desktop or laptop computer and wants the peace of mind that their cryptocurrency access codes are being kept offline most of the time.

Our recommendation: Exodus Bitcoin & Crypto Wallet . Exodus is free and easy to install and has a user-friendly interface that even a crypto novice can navigate. Exodus supports over 100 different cryptocurrencies and has a reputation for having good customer support should you need it. Exodus also has a linked mobile app.

Best crypto wallets: Best mobile crypto wallet

Best crypto wallets — Coinbase Wallet

A mobile wallet is an app containing your cryptocurrency account information that can be downloaded and installed on a mobile device. Because mobile wallets allow you to send and receive cryptocurrencies by using QR codes, they’re great for transacting with cryptocurrency face to face, where possible, in the real world.

Mobile wallets are great for anyone who spends most of their screen time on a mobile device, and some people feel they are even more secure than web wallets as long as you’re running the latest versions of Android or iOS. Many web and desktop wallets also offer linked mobile wallets.

Our recommendation: Coinbase Wallet . Do not confuse the Coinbase Wallet with the Coinbase exchange — they are separate entities, and with the Coinbase Wallet you’re not trusting Coinbase with your crypto keys; you control your own keys. The Coinbase Wallet is a mobile crypto wallet with a host of features. It’s super easy to download and navigate; supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many other tokens; and provides you with access to the decentralized web.

We also recommend, for folks who only want to store Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, the Bitcoin.com wallet , for its speed and ease of use when transacting with those coins.

crypto wallet safari extension

Ethereum browser extension wallet for Safari on macOS & iOS

Safari wallet.

This is an experiment to see whether we can build a viable browser extension Ethereum wallet for Safari on macOS and especially iOS.

A diagram might be useful, but basically the current plan/rundown is:

The window.ethereum object (EIP-1193 JavaScript API) will be injected into each page. This way, the wallet will automatically work with all apps/dApps that support MetaMask.

For the interface, the native Safari extension popover is used, in tandem with the WebExtensions API .

The bulk of the development is currently going on in the Shared (Extension) folder.

It is important to read these files:

Shared Extension (Popover) > Resources > README.md

test-dapp > README.md

Setting up the popover

Open this repo as a project in Xcode

In the leftmost top bar breadcrumb, which should be on “macOS” by default, switch it to “iOS”

Set the following breadcrumb to a mobile device, perhaps “iPhone 13 Pro”?

Click the play button to start the emulator

Once the emulator has loaded (it might take a few minutes), open the Settings app

Settings > Safari > Extensions > Wallet Extension

Switch to on

Then, to test the popover, navigate to https://safari-wallet-test-dapp.vercel.app in Safari (or http://localhost:3000/ , if you’re running the local dev server)

You can also set up the local dev server here (WIP): https://github.com/natclark/safari-wallet-test-dapp

Ledger launches browser extension to improve crypto wallet connectivity

A photo of a Ledger Crypto Wallet in front of some abstract objects

Ledger , one of the largest cold storage crypto wallet providers, launched a browser extension to improve online security and connectivity for digital assets, the company exclusively told TechCrunch.

“You think of Web 1.0 as usernames and passwords, Web 2.0 as log in with Facebook, Google, iCloud, Twitter, and web3 is [about] connecting to your wallet,” Ian Rogers, chief experience officer at Ledger, said. “But that connectivity experience is still not super trivial and that’s what we’re talking about here and fixing this major usability problem of connectivity in web3.”

The Ledger Extension is compatible with Ethereum- and Polygon-based dApps and platforms and plans to support more EVM-compatible chains and Solana in the future, the company shared. It is only usable on Safari, iOS and MacOS today but will roll out additional support for Windows, Chrome and Chromium-based browsers like Brave, Opera and Edge “shortly after launch.”

It currently is available for use through a handful of dApps and platforms like NFT marketplace OpenSea and decentralized exchanges PancakeSwap and Curve, among others.

The extension aims to provide similar experiences to crypto wallets with browser extensions like MetaMask, but instead of being a hot wallet — which is connected to the internet and is more susceptible to online attacks — it will remain a cold wallet that allows users to interact directly with dApps through Bluetooth.

“A lot of people say web3 is hard to use, when you ask specifically how is it hard to use, they shrug, but I think it’s onboarding and connectivity,” Rogers said. “This is meant to fix that.”

It has two features that aim to keep users safe when interacting with crypto: It analyzes smart contracts and warns users whether a transaction is potentially malicious, Carl Anderson, VP of consumer engineering, shared. It will also simulate a transaction to show how it’ll impact the wallet, even when it’s a secure transaction. “Essentially what we’re doing here is showing users how to keep their keys secure,” Anderson added.

Ledger is a nine-year-old crypto hardware wallet and cold wallet provider that has sold more than 6 million devices across 200 countries and to more than 100 financial institutions and brands. About 20% of crypto assets globally are secured through Ledger, the company stated.

“We’re building on top of what we already have, which is hardware security,” Anderson said. “The Ledger Extension is about being easy to use and bringing in that security.”

In December, the company partnered with the designer behind the iPod , Tony Fadell, to create an easier, more accessible way for users to secure their crypto through their Ledger Stax product. Earlier in 2022, Ledger partnered with $1.5 billion venture capital firm Cathay Innovation to launch a $110 million fund dedicated to securing crypto assets. In 2021, it raised $380 million in a funding round led by 10T Holdings, valuing Ledger at $1.5 billion at the time.

“For us, our goal is to bring the world of crypto digital assets and wallet-connected apps from what Tony Fadell calls from ‘business to geek’ to ‘business to consumer,’” Rogers said. “There’s plenty of ground to cover there. But that doesn’t bother me at all.”

Rogers has a background in digital music and compared the crypto space to the early days of digital music. “Only the most technical people had an MP3 in the beginning and now, obviously, music is at everyone’s fingertips.”

These transitions into new technology always start with very difficult usability and limited consumer options, Rogers noted. “But over time they evolve and reach a large audience. The digital music path is analogous because it started as something only geeks were interested in and ultimately we got the iPod, iPhone and services like Spotify to become mainstream.”

Going forward, Ledger plans to focus on improving connectivity and security in the crypto space so it becomes easier for consumers and businesses to engage with dApps and platforms in the space, Rogers and Anderson shared.

“If you look at the puzzle pieces, it’s about making them better tomorrow, better than yesterday and getting adoption across dApps and making sure we have platforms covered,” Rogers said. “There’s always more ground to cover but the pieces are there.”

Fast-forward to 2030, and the industry won’t be talking about Web 2.0 versus web3, Anderson thinks. “It will just be the web. And for us, it’s about bringing security to it because of the immutable nature of blockchains. We want to bridge the gap between for ease of use.”

What Manifest V3 means for Brave Shields and the use of extensions in the Brave browser

In late 2021, Google first announced plans to deprecate Manifest V2 (MV2), the longstanding Chrome extension manifest file format, and force extensions to be built using Manifest V3 (MV3) going forward. What does this mean for Brave users? In short:

Manifest V3 will not weaken Brave Shields in any way

For as long as we’re able (and assuming the cooperation of the extension authors), Brave will continue to support some privacy-relevant MV2 extensions—specifically AdGuard, NoScript, uBlock Origin, and uMatrix

Brave Shields block ads and trackers by default, and they’re built natively in the Brave browser—no extensions required. Since Shields are patched directly onto the open-source Chromium codebase, they don’t rely on MV2 or MV3.

Thanks to this independence, Google’s forced removal of MV2 will not weaken Brave Shields. The filter lists (such as EasyList and EasyPrivacy) we rely on to protect users from invasive ads and trackers are open for community contribution, and we expect the privacy community at large to continue maintaining these lists. Brave’s privacy research and engineering teams will do so as well.

No matter what happens with the deprecation of MV2 and the shift to MV3, Shields will continue to offer better, more stable protection than extensions.

Will MV2 extensions still work in Brave?

Yes, for now. We recognize the importance of supporting existing Manifest V2 extensions. We have force-enabled Manifest V2 support in the Brave browser, ensuring that you can continue to use your favorite extensions without interruption. In June 2025, Google plans to remove all remaining Manifest V2 items from the Chrome Web Store. While Brave has no extension store, we have a robust process for customizing (or “patching”) atop the open-source Chromium engine. This will allow us to offer limited MV2 support even after it’s fully removed from the upstream Chromium codebase.

Which MV2 extensions will work in Brave?

As of now, the MV2 extensions we plan to explicitly support are AdGuard AdBlocker , NoScript , uBlock Origin , and uMatrix . This feature will be best-effort: we might have to modify support based on either Google’s plans or what extension authors ultimately decide to do. If extensions become stale or obsolete, we may remove support for them rather than offer our users an out-of-date (potentially even unsafe) experience.

We’re gradually rolling out a new page in Settings that lists these extensions. Once you have the update, you will see it in brave://settings/extensions.

What’s the issue with Manifest V3?

As a recap, Manifest V3 restricts the blocking capabilities of Web extensions, making it harder for privacy-enhancing extensions such as uBlock Origin to protect users. The privacy community has already begun releasing experimental versions of ad block extensions that are rebuilt from the ground up to meet the new constraints of MV3: AdGuard AdBlocker MV3 Experimental and uBlock Origin Lite are just two examples. And we’ve seen that these experimental versions do block ads and other unwanted Web content. However, MV3 imposes new limitations, such as a cap on blocking rules, the removal of background scripts, and changes around cosmetic filtering. Overall, these new MV3 extensions lean on workarounds to solve problems MV3 itself introduces.

The increased importance of user-first browsers such as Brave

Brave provides best-in-class privacy, no extensions required. We’re also actively working on new features such as procedural filtering, which will give us more flexibility in blocking invasive ads and trackers, ensuring a cleaner and safer browsing experience for our users. If you’re not able to use Brave, browser extensions can be helpful to achieve some (though not all) of Brave’s protections in other, less private browsers. Most ad block developers put a lot of thought and care into the performance and safety of their extensions, and they can provide some additional privacy.

Brave also builds a host of other privacy protections adjacent to ad blocking, such as fingerprint randomization , ephemeral storage partitions , and more; such protections would be impossible in an extension-based solution. By building natively in the Brave browser, we’re saying these features are table stakes, not something that should be offered as an optional add-on.

While Brave will continue to offer limited support for MV2 extensions, the real solution is to use Brave’s industry-leading, native features. All are available by simply downloading the Brave browser.

For more info, you can read Google’s updated timeline for deprecation of MV3 .
