The Best Spots to Watch Cruise Ships in Miami

Besides the many beaches, Miami is also known for it being a Cruise-Hotspot. Many cruise ships leave from Miami on cruises from far too distant. The Caribbean, Bahamas, and Cuba are just a few destinations you can visit from Miami. These ships are basically a small town floating on water. I have never been on a cruise so far but it is on my bucket list.

If you want to watch the cruise ships in Miami, there are a few spots you could do so. It doesn’t matter if you go on a cruise and just want to watch your ship from the outside before departing or you are just into photographing them. Below a list with my favorite spots to watch cruise ships.

  • Museum Park and American Airlines Arena: From the shoreline behind the American Airlines Arena and the Museum Park you get a great view of the Port of Miami Cruise Ship Turning Basin. The cruise ships will turn around here either before or after docking at the terminals at the Port of Miami. It is amazing to see this gigantic ships basically turning on the spot. Definitely fun to watch. You get a few of Port of Miami Cruise Ship Turning Basin also from the Bayside Marketplace. Get upstairs and find a restaurant with a view of the basin. But from Bayside your view won’t be as good as it will be obstructed by the bridge connecting Downtown Miami with Dodge Island (Port of Miami). Besides watching ships, the nearby museums are great to watch some art as well.
  • Port Blvd Bridge and MacArthur Causeway Bridge: As mentioned, the Port Blvd Bridge will obstruct your view by watching the ships from Bayside. However, you can just watch the ships turning around from the bridge. Another good bridge to watch the cruise ships turning is the MacArthur Causeway Bridge which is located north of the Port Blvd Bridge. The bridge has a sidewalk as well and you probably can find some free parking on Watson Island next to the stairs leading up to the bridge. Besides watching cruise ships you also get a good view of the Miami Skyline from this bridge .

  • MacArthur Causeway: You can walk or bicycle along the causeway all the way to Miami Beach. MacArthur Causeway runs parallel to the Main Channel on which the cruise ships sail in and out from the port. Be aware of the traffic along the causeway.

Miami Cruise Port (Florida, USA): Guide and Review (2023)

All you must know about Miami cruise port: how to get to the port and the cruise terminals, embarking and disembarking, flying, driving and parking, what to do before or after a cruise.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 23, 2023

In this review, you will find quite a few helpful insider tips about the port of Miami, regardless of whether you are a savvy cruiser or have a cruise scheduled from Miami for the first time.

Unless you are a resident of South Florida, a couple of questions come to mind: "Should you get to Miami on the day before the cruise?", "Should you stay in Miami after a cruise?", "For how long should you stay?", "What is there to do, and is it worth the time and expense? And the topmost question is: "Where to stay overnight in Miami?"

Where is the cruise port in Miami?

Staying in Miami overnight

How to get around miami.

You will also wonder about the best way to get to the city: "Is it better to fly, or to drive to Miami?", "Are there any transportation alternatives?", "How to get around if staying overnight?"

But let's start from the beginning and the most relevant questions: "Should you get to the city the day before the cruise? Where is the port of Miami? What's the best way to get to Miami and the port?"

Unless you live within a reasonable driving distance, you should go to Miami at least on the day before the start of your cruise. Flying to Miami on the day of the cruise is risky - you may miss the cruise if a flight gets delayed -, and to be by your cruise terminal on time, you should get to Miami airport before noon.

Bear in mind that many savvy cruisers like to fly on the morning of the cruise and brag about never missing a cruise. It's up to you to take the risk, take a red-eye flight, stress out or get yourself on a cruising mood beforehand.

The Port of Miami is on a man-made island (know as Dodge Island) between Downtown Miami and South Beach. With around 5 million passengers per year, Miami is the busiest cruise port in the World. Hence being known as the Cruise Capital of the World.

This staggering number is concentrated on the weekends when up to eight mega-ships moor at its eleven terminals. Inevitably, disembarking and embarking in Miami during a weekend can be far from smooth and, at times, frustrating.

Google map of the Port of Miami

If you have a look at the map above, it is clear that the Port of Miami (on Dodge Island ) is connected by a bridge to Downtown on the West mainland. Some cruisers presume, wrongly, that the access to the port is easy.

However, many cruise passengers staying overnight at hotels in Downtown or Brickell and seeing the cruise ships from the window get frustrated once they realize that the distance is way too long to walk (between 2.5 and 4 miles). In particular when dragging luggage over a bridge in the hot and humid Miami weather. Keep reading to learn more about Embarkation / Disembarkation and Staying Overnight .

Walking to the port with luggage is out of the question. When staying overnight at a hotel nearby, you will not need to walk because most hotels in Downtown Miami provide shuttle buses to the cruise port.

If staying overnight in hotels close to the airport, in South Beach, or elsewhere in Miami, the best way to get to the Port of Miami is with Uber, Lift, or by Taxi. Driving (your car or a rented one) is not complicated. But there are a few tricks and tips to consider - more about driving and parking below.

Embarking and Disembarking in Miami cruise port

If embarking on a cruise, it isn't advisable to try to get to the port before 11:00 am as you will be going against the current . Most staff at the Terminals are focusing on disembarking guests, and the terminals may not be even fully ready as most cruise ships will not start the embarkation process before 11:00 am. However, if you arrive in Miami on a very early flight, there are sitting areas at the terminals but do not expect more than just a seat, a bathroom, and a long wait.

Naturally, when disembarking a cruise ship, most travelers want to get out of the port as fast as possible either to get home or to explore Miami before getting on a flight. Although the same transport limitations to embarkation apply, there are a few interesting alternatives.

Many cruise lines offer tours of Miami including a transfer to the Airport and secured locking for your luggage. But if you want to explore Miami on your own there are booths offering all sorts of excursions, tours, and hop-on-hop-off buses.

The Cruise Terminals in Miami Port

The Port of Miami has been under huge renovations for a few years with the constructions of two new terminals - Terminal A (Royal Caribbean) and Terminal B (Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)- but also with the renovations of Terminal C, and building of Terminal H.

Here you gave a list of the cruise terminals in the port of Miami and the cruise lines these terminals serve:

  • Terminal A: opened in November 2018 , serves as homeport to Royal Caribbean International.
  • Terminal B: completed in 2021, serving Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL).
  • Terminal C: under renovation, to be joined with Terminal B.
  • Terminal D: MSC Cruises, Fred Olsen, Hapag Lloyd.
  • Terminal E: Carnival Cruises, Aida, Princess Cruises and P & O Cruises
  • Terminal F: Carnival Cruises
  • Terminal G: Celebrity, Royal Caribbean
  • Terminal J: Oceania Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Azamara, Regent Seven Seas and Silversea.

Flying to Miami (MIA) and getting to Miami Port

For those flying to South Florida to embark a cruise ship in Miami on the same day, traveling to the port is very straight forward regardless of the arrival airport - Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

From Miami Airport (MIA) to the Port of Miami

Miami's Airport can be chaotic at times - in particular on weekends in the morning. Most cruise lines offer transfers from the airport to the port. This service is not exactly cheap when compared with taxis or Uber but has the advantage of handling luggage straight to your cruise ship.

Cruise Shuttles, Taxis, Uber and Lift

The downside of cruise line transfers to the port is that most of these are only available on the specific day of embarkation and disembarkation, although the prices can be appealing - Carnival charges $33 per person (round trip).

The cruise traveler will find Yellow taxis right outside the exit doors of the airport and, generally speaking, even on rush hours you may not have to wait more than a few minutes in line. Taxis charge a $27 flat-fare per ride (not per person). Uber and Lift cost between $16 and $30 (depending on traffic and if using premium services). Both Uber and Lift apps are very well designed and you will be able to indicated precisely your waiting location.

Flying to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (FLL) and and getting to Miami Port

When booking a flight to embark on a cruise sailing out of the Port of Miami, it is advisable to check prices including flights to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport. You may find much better prices, in particular, if flying from outside the United States. The Fort Lauderdale airport is only 30 miles (48 km) north of the Port of Miami.

Most Cruise Lines also offer transfers from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (FLL) to the Port of Miami. Carnival offers this service for $62 round-trip per person. By contrast, Uber and Lift regular service is around $35 per trip (not per person) and a standard taxi will charge over $75 per ride.

Independent Shuttles

A good alternative to Cruise Lines Transfers, Taxi, Uber or Lift is the service provided by independent shuttle companies that can easily be booked online. There are quite a few and IQCruising does NOT in any way endorse, sponsor or gets paid to advertise any of them. Cruise travelers should check these services and prices, which can be very competitive, and also check for reviews online before booking.

Here are some of the best know companies offering the Shuttle Service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (FLL) to the Port of Miami:

  • Express Shuttle Miami
  • Super Shuttle
  • Go Airport Shuttle
  • My Florida Shuttle Bus
  • Miami Port Shuttle
  • Bus Ticket Reservations

Private Car and Limo Services

Like with Independent Shuttles, IQCruising does NOT in any way endorse, sponsor or gets paid to advertise any of the many Private Car and Limo services offering transfers all over south Florida between its Airport and Port. In fact, we strongly advise to check online reviews before booking. However, you may find useful some of the links for these companies:

  • Family Car Service
  • Luxury Limousines
  • Price 4 Limo

Unless you are a resident of Miami or the big residential areas close by and know your way around the web of streets, roads, flyovers around Downtown, there are a few insiders tips that can be useful for those driving to the Port of Miami.

Photo of sign on Interstate 95 in Miami

I-95 Tunnel Sign, Miami

There are two main driving accesses to the Port of Miami. Either driving trough Downtown Miami – can be chaotic but not too bad on weekend early mornings – or trough the Port Tunnel . The latter is advisable unless you are staying in a hotel Downtown or in Miami Beach. The Tunnel entrance/exit is on MacArthur Causeway (I-395) that connects mainland Miami to South Beach, right in the middle of Watson Island (very close to the mainland).

If traveling from North or South, the I-95 connects directly to the MacArthur Causeway. Be aware that there are other connections to South Beach so look out for the sign: 395 East to Miami | Port of Miami via Tunnel | Miami Beach . This will be the Exit 2D regardless if driving from north or south.

When driving from West Florida , the MacArthur Causeway is a continuation of the Dolphin Expressway (I-395) and you will only need to follow the sign: 395 Miami Beach and look out for the sign ‘Port of Miami via Tunnel’, the exit will be on the left lane.

The Tunnel doesn’t have access if driving from South Beach and you will have to Exit on Biscayne Boulevard (Exit 2) and make a U-turn on N. Bayshore Drive to re-enter the MacArthur Causeway. Alternatively, just drive Downtown and follow the Port of Miami signs to cross the Port Bridge.

Once on the Port of Miami, there are clear signs indicating the Terminals and where cruise ships are docked. Most cruise lines always dock on the same terminals although these may change. Here is a list of the cruise lines homeporting in Miami and the cruise terminals used:

  • Azamara: Terminal J
  • Carnival Cruises: Terminals D, E and F
  • Celebrity Cruises: Terminal G
  • Crystal: Terminal J
  • Disney Cruise Line: Terminal K, under renovation.
  • MSC Cruises: Terminal D
  • Norwegian Cruise Line: Terminal B
  • Oceania Cruises: Terminal J
  • Regent Seven Seas: Terminal J
  • Royal Caribbean: Terminals A and G
  • Virgin Cruises: Terminal V, under renovation

Obviously, the exit of the Port of Miami follows the reversed routes. Just be aware that signs can be rather small and lookout for one of two options: Exit Via Tunnel or Exit Via Port Bridge . The first will take you to the I-95, Dolphin Expressway and also to South Miami. The exit Via Port Bridge is only advisable if going to Downtown, Brickell, Coconut Grove or Key Biscayne.

Parking in and close to the Port of Miami

Parking in the Port of Miami is commendable: both convenient and safe. There is lots of space and all terminals have covered parking just across the main entrances and are clearly signed. Parking is not cheap at $25 per day ($175 for a 7-day cruise) but is absolutely safe. Check pricing updates on the official website Port Miami Parking .

There is also a good number of Private Companies offering Parking outside the Port that includes Free Round Trip Shuttle for less and equally secure. Some claim half price costs but most charge around $80 for seven days. Just as an example and not as advertisement you may want to check the following parking services :

  • Premier Cruise Parking
  • Parkway Parking
  • We Park in Miami
  • Safe Cruise Parking

Car Rental in Miami

Photo of Car Rental Center at the Airport Miami

Car Rental Center at the Airport

A good alternative to driving your own car to the Port of Miami is to rent a car. Most companies do not charge much to drop-off a car at a different location than the one where you rent it (within the state of Florida) and, considering the cost of parking in Miami ($25 per day at the Port or $15 with private services), you should at least consider it.

The drop-off is at the Miami International Airport and from here a FREE shuttle will take you directly to the Port of Miami, right to the Terminal of your cruise ship. Once disembarking the cruise, just get on the Car Rental Shuttle (which stops by all the Terminals) to get back to the Airport . If you rent a car in advance it may work out cheaper and more conveniently.

Miami is a city of multiple charms with lots of attractions to enjoy during a longer stay. Unfortunately, most touristic promotions have been focusing on a few main sites and leave out many other interesting aspects of the city that are worth exploring. Besides the Beach (on South Beach), the Seaquarium, the typical Everglades experience or Little Havana there is much more to enjoy on a overnight stay in Miami.

Photo of Vizcaya Museum Garden in Miami

Vizcaya Museum Garden, Miami

After all, how many have traveled 25 miles to Aventura Mall not knowing that Dadeland Mall is just 15-minutes away by train? Or went to Bal Harbor to have a look at luxury shops, when you can find the same and even more stores within walking distance at the Brickell City Center or at the Design District (15-minute Trolley free ride away)? Why pay for a tour to the Vizcaya Gardens and Museum, to Wynwood or Little Havana when you have a Trolley that allows you to explore it on your own for free? What about renting a car – with a free shuttle from the port to the Car Rental center at the Miami Airport - and explore at leisure off-the-beaten-track places like the fabulous Miami Zoo, or Cape Florida.

Unlike most areas in Miami, Downtown (next to the Cruise Port) is very well served by public transportat ion (and most is free) with direct connections to the Airport, the Viscaya Museum, the Design District, the Entertainment District, Wynwood and all around Downtown - the Historical Center of Miami. All major points of interest in Miami are easy to reach by public transportation including South Beach, Little Havana, Dadeland, Key Biscayne and as far north as the Aventura Mall and Ft. Lauderdale.

Although it is easy to drive your personal car to the port, as do limos, taxis (and also Uber and Lift), hotel shuttles or sightseeing buses it is not always easy to find transportation when thousands of passengers are on the move. Ignored by most, there is a Trolley (FREE) with a stop next to Terminal J and another stop close enough to Terminal F - find below the terminals where cruise ships dock. However if your cruise ships docks at any of the other terminals the walk can be quite long - over 3/4 mile (1 km) to Terminal B.

Photo of Trolley in Miami

Coral Way Trolley, Miami

This Trolley route goes all the way to Coral Gables but has a few convenient stops next to Bayside and Downtown and can be a good way to get in and out of the port. The Trolley runs every 20 minutes, every day of the week between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm (8:00 am to 8:00 pm on Sundays) but with limited service on holidays like Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving.

Photo of Metro Mover in Miami

Metro Mover, Miami

Other Public Transportation can be particularly useful when moving around Downtown area prior to Embarking or Disembarking. The free automated electrical MetroMover (aka People Mover) has 21 stations in three loops that connect all major places of interest in the area including Brickell or the Perez Art Museum, and close to major hotels.

Many other Trolley Routes (also free) crisscross downtown, connecting to farther places like Coconut Grove (ideal to visit Vizcaya Gardens), the Design District, Wynwood, Little Havana and Coral Gables. The Downtown Bus Terminal, close to the Government Center, has routes to South Beach, Key Biscayne (good for the Seaquarium) and as far as the Aventura Mall.

Photo of Train Station at Miami Aorport

Train Station at the Airport

At the Government Center , the MetroRail has a Station with direct connections to the Airport and south to Dadeland (next to Dadeland Mall). The MetroRail also connects to the Tri-Rail (a commuter train to Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach) and to the Amtrack Silver Service Route to New York and Tampa.

The 10 best beaches you can visit on a cruise

Gene Sloan

For beach lovers, a cruise may be the ultimate getaway.

On a single week-long voyage, you sometimes can visit beaches in three, four or even more countries -- an impressive feat that would be difficult to do on any other type of trip.

Royal Caribbean's new seven-night Southern Caribbean Explorer itineraries out of Barbados, for instance, will get you to five island nations with stunning beaches: Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica and St. Lucia.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter.

On Western Mediterranean itineraries operated by the line and others, you often will have the opportunity to visit beaches in Spain, France, Italy and Malta -- all within a few days.

To be fair, some of the world's most spectacular beaches -- Balos Beach in Crete, for instance -- aren't easily reachable from the places where cruise ships dock. But cruise ships can take you to a surprising number of the world's most famous and alluring stretches of sand.

Here, a look at some of our favorite beaches at TPG you can visit on a cruise:

South Beach, Miami

Distance from cruise port : 6 miles

cruise ship south beach

One of the world's most famous beaches is just down the road from the port that draws more cruisers than any other in the world. Miami's iconic South Beach, long a tourist hot spot, is located just north of PortMiami , the cruise world's biggest hub. That means that more than a million cruisers every year have the opportunity to begin or end their trips with a visit to the 2.2-mile stretch of white sand. In addition to a place to lounge on the beach, you'll be able to check out South Beach's storied art deco hotels.

Playa de la Barrosa, Spain

Distance from cruise port: 24 miles

Located near the port of Cadiz, Spain, Playa de la Barrosa offers nearly 4 miles of glittering sands, separated into two parts. There's the main beach area with plenty of rental chairs, beachside cafes and restaurants and lifeguards, if you prefer having all the amenities. But there's also the southern side, which is a little more wild. It's home to sandy dunes and pine trees for travelers who really want to escape.

Related: 15 of the most beautiful beaches in Spain

Half Moon Bay, Antigua

Distance from cruise port: 17 miles

cruise ship south beach

Named by TPG as one of the 10 best secret beaches in the Caribbean , Antigua's Half Moon Bay tends to be more deserted than others on the island; there's no sign identifying the mile-long stretch of pink and white sand. Once you find it, though, you're in for crowd-free euphoria. The beach has something for everyone — windsurfers flock to the center to take advantage of the waves, while snorkelers float around the calmer water near the edges.

St. Peter's Pool, Malta

Distance from cruise port: 7 miles

One of TPG's picks for the 11 best beaches in Europe , St. Peter's Pool isn't really a beach — at least, not in the traditional sense. What you'll find at the destination, which is just a few miles away from where cruise ships dock in Valletta, Malta, is a stunning bay framed by smooth, flat rock instead of sand, with the rock appearing almost as if it was carved away to create a very special pool of water: Imagine swimming and sunbathing on the moon. "Beach"-goers can spread their towels out on the unusual stretch of coast and dive into the refreshing water.

Waikiki Beach, Oahu

Distance from cruise port: 3 miles

cruise ship south beach

You'll see the full splendor of Oahu's Waikiki Beach from your ship as it pulls into Honolulu Harbor, and getting there is a breeze. Just hop in an Uber at the port, and you'll be there in less than 10 minutes. Once there, you can soak in the views of the famed Diamond Head crater, which frames the southeastern end of the beach. Or, pay homage to Duke Kahanamoku, Olympic swimmer and father of modern-day surfing, at the statue in his image. Visitors also can take surf classes or try their hand at canoe paddling along Waikiki, and you'll find lifeguards and restrooms.

Nusa Dua Beach, Bali

Distance from cruise port: 8 miles

Just 8 miles from the Bali cruise port of Benoa, the beaches at Nusa Dua are known for being some of the island's cleanest and most beautiful, as well as its least crowded. Relax in the white sands at Pantai Geger — the water temperatures here are among Bali's warmest. Then, take the boat out to Turtle Island, where you can see the area's cutest aquatic animals in a protected conservation area.

Ka'anapali Beach, Maui

cruise ship south beach

Just a few miles from the cruise port at Lahaina on the island of Maui (and a bit farther away from the cruise port of Kahului) is one of Hawaii's most famous beaches, Ka'anapali. Located on Maui's West Shore, the 3-mile-long stretch of sand fronts a variety of big resorts (if you decide to come here on points, you'll find such favorites as the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, and The Westin Maui Resort and Spa). It's easy to swim and snorkel from this long, walkable and lifeguard-protected beach, which offers views of Lanai and Molokai. You can rent snorkel gear as well as surfboards and wakeboards at nearby shops, and also arrange for a shaded cabana. And be sure to keep an eye out for sea turtles in the water (and, during certain times of year, humpback whales breaching in the distance).

Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman Island

Distance from cruise port : 5 miles

This famous, gorgeous crescent of coral sand is easy to reach from the Grand Cayman Island cruise pier, and a top draw for cruisers visiting the island. Named by TPG as one of the world's seven great family beaches , it's particularly appealing to families due to its calm surf. It's also home to nearby Stingray City, where kids can swim with the gentle (and friendly) giants. Just don't be fooled into thinking it's really 7 miles long. It measures closer to 6 miles in length -- still an impressive stretch of sand that's open for strolling from end to end.

Manly Beach, Australia

Distance from cruise port: 12 miles

cruise ship south beach

You'll need to take a 30-minute ferry to reach Manly Beach from the spot where cruise ships dock in Sydney, Australia. But it's well worth the effort. Lined with beachside cafes, restaurants and bars, Manly is one of the Sydney area's iconic beach getaways. It's best known as surfing hot spot (it's home to the Australian Open of Surfing every February) and is backed by a tree-lined promenade. Its fine soft sand has a lovely golden color.

Governor's Beach, Grand Turk Island

Distance from cruise port: 1 mile

Governor's Beach on the island of Grand Turk (part of the Turks and Caicos ) can be crowded at times -- particularly on days when cruise ships are visiting the island. But it's popular for a reason. It offers a fine curve of white sand and clear turquoise water. It's also super close to Grand Turk Cruise Center, where cruise ships arrive when visiting the island, making it an easy outing for cruisers.

Matira Beach, Bora Bora

Distance from cruise port: 4 miles

cruise ship south beach

Just about any spit of sand you find on Bora Bora will offer a little slice of paradise. But if your cruise vessel pulls into the famed French Polynesian island, we recommend a trip to Matira Beach -- on the southern tip of the island. This public beach is 2 miles long and open to all for free, and the sand is impossibly soft and silky. It's also rarely crowded (access for the public is right near the entrance to the InterContinental Le Moana Bora Bora ). You'll find the water crystal clear and shallow out to the coral reef offshore. Just be sure to watch for falling coconuts.

Ocean Cay (MSC’s Private Island): Complete Guide, Tips, & Things to Know

If you are taking a cruise in the United States aboard MSC, chances are high that you’ll be visiting Ocean Cay. This is the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas that’s exclusive to guests of MSC.

View of MSC's Ocean Cay from cruise ship

In other words, if you’ve ever wanted to spend a day on your own island, surrounded by the bluest water on the planet, this is your chance. It’s large, with seemingly miles of beaches and enough space to where you can get away from it all.

But if you thought that MSC simply bought an island and opened it up to passengers, that’s not the case at all. In total the company spent a reported $300 million into renovating Ocean Cay. What began years ago as a former industrial sand excavation site is now a completely new and revitalized island.

Those lucky enough to visit Ocean Cay are in for a special day (and possible overnight stay). If you are about to take a trip there, we’ve covered the spot from start to finish below, with everything you need to know.

  • Official Name: Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve
  • Pronunciation: Ocean “Key”
  • Distance from Miami: 65 miles
  • Size: 150-200 acres (approximate)
  • Opened: December 2019

Ocean Cay Location

One of the defining features of Ocean Cay is its close location to Miami. As just 65 miles southeast from the Port of Miami, it has the advantage of being reached in just a few hours. In fact, the island is so close that ships sometimes dock overnight — giving passengers all day at the island… and then some — and still be able to reach Miami within a few hours.

Other major cruise ports (relatively) near Ocean Cay include Nassau, Key West, and Freeport. Don’t be surprised if one or more of these stops are also included on your cruise.

Ocean Cay Overview

As we’ve mentioned, the island is a private paradise for MSC passengers. But to simply call it that wouldn’t do the work that MSC has done justice.

Until a few years ago Ocean Cay was an industrial spot where sand was excavated for use in other places. The cruise line has since transformed it into what it is today, as well as an eco-friendly marine reserve.

Beach on Ocean Cay

Of course, guests will be most interested in the beaches and water. Ocean Cay today has enormous stretches of white-sand beaches that wrap around the island. As part of the building process, MSC put in a protective island and reshaped the land to also create a calm lagoon so that swimming and water activities are possible no matter how rough the surrounding sea may be.

Perhaps the biggest draw to the island is the surrounding water. A rare color of electric blue, the waters of Ocean Cay are some of the most striking we’ve ever seen. One thing to note is that the winter months can see cooler water temps. So just because the weather is warm year-round doesn’t always mean the water will be as well.

The first thing you will notice on the island is the large lighthouse that’s the anchor of Lighthouse Bay, right near where the cruise ship docks. The lighthouse features a viewing platform, as well as a bar at its base. At night it transforms into a colorful video screen, accompanied by music and a lightshow.

Lighthouse on MSC's Ocean Cay

Around the entire island are a number of other things to do, see, and visit. This includes eight different beaches, shops, a spa, food trucks, a buffet, bars, cabanas, and even a wedding chapel.

One thing that you’ll definitely notice is the size of Ocean Cay. If you’ve been on other private cruise line islands like CocoCay or Great Stirrup Cay , you know they are sizable, but the area reserved for guests is smaller.

Ocean Cay has much more area for their guests. We would estimate that to walk an entire loop around the island, it would take you about 30 minutes at a brisk pace. Have trouble walking? There are beaches right near the cruise ship so you don’t have to venture far. There is also a free tram that drives guests all around the island.

However, one positive about having a larger island is that there is plenty of space for everyone. While some of the most popular beaches can get crowded at peak times, you can simply walk a few hundred feet and have a spot all to yourself.

Things to Do On the Island

As you would expect, most of the time you’ll spend on Ocean Cay revolves around the beach and the ocean. Blessed with both gorgeous sand and stunning clear water, you’ll want to get your fill of both.

Beaches & Swimming If you come to Ocean Cay and don’t spend any time on the beach, then you may as well stay on the ship. Beaches are all around the island, including Lighthouse Bay that is right near the cruise ship.

cruise ship south beach

The most popular area for swimming and lounging is South Beach. This beach wraps around and another small island (North Beach) creates a large lagoon. In between these two spots the water is always calm as it’s protected from the open ocean. That makes it ideal for swimming. South Beach is roughly a 10-minute walk from the ship.

Other beaches include Bimini Beach, Ocean House Beach, Sunset Beach, and more.

Cabanas Want to hang out on the beach in style? Rent a cabana. These cabanas are dotted all around the island. They are open-air, but provide much needed shade during the day. There’s also a couch, chairs, and loungers. Prices start at $280 for up to six people.

Lighthouse Show During the day the lighthouse on the island is the biggest landmark you’ll see. It can be seen from everywhere and you can even pay to climb to the top. But if you think it’s prominent during the day, wait until night.

cruise ship south beach

At night there are lighthouse shows. The entire building is covered in light panels and circled at top and bottom with bright spotlights. Set to music, the show features colorful graphics around the lighthouse, along with an amazing lightshow. It’s a can’t miss.

Snorkeling/Diving Of course with so much gorgeous water surrounding the island, it’s a great place to snorkel. Equipment is available for rent on the island, and you can either explore on your own or book and excursion that will take you to some of the best spots.

Are you a diver? If you have your certification then you can book a one or two-tank dive from the island.

Shops and buildings on Ocean Cay, MSC's private island

Shops Right as you walk ashore, you will enter Ocean Cay Village. Here you’ll find an information booth, excursion desk, Springer’s bar, and also shops. Whether you want to pick up some sunscreen that you forgot or want to buy some souvenirs, the shops here have you covered.

Kayak/Paddleboarding If you want to get on the water, there’s no better way than renting a kayak or a paddleboard. Both are available for about $40. You’ll have the ability to go explore the waters around the island, including a chance to see wildlife in the area, including sea turtles if you’re lucky.

Jet Ski Tours Adrenaline junkies will love that you can book a jet ski tour to explore the island and the surrounding area. There’s space for one driver and one passenger, and you’ll be in charge of driving. Never ridden a jet ski before? Don’t worry, they will cover everything you need to know to get started before the tour.

Stargazing One of the unique things about Ocean Cay is that MSC features extended days at the island, with the ship often departing at midnight. That means you can spend some time ashore during the evening and night.

And given the remoteness of the island, it’s a pretty good spot for stargazing. MSC offers a stargazing excursion, but you can also wander out to the darker spots and see constellations that you won’t notice in the city.

What to Eat/Drink on Ocean Cay

Hungry? A day in the sun and the water can build up an appetite. There’s plenty to eat on the island, and it’s included in your cruise fare.

The biggest spot to eat is Seakers Food Court. This is a buffet that features buffet staples like burger and dogs. Just don’t expect high-end dining. It’s just about in the center of the island, and right near South Beach. There is also bar service at the buffet if you are feeling thirsty.

Apart from Seakers, there are multiple food trucks around the island. These spots (called Beach Shacks) are also free, but we’ve noticed some have paid options. With so many of them, you never have to walk far to get a bite to eat. They have a menu of hamburgers, dogs, and pasta salad for those who don’t eat meat.

As well, if you simply want to go back to the ship, the buffet onboard will also be serving food.

Beach snack shack

Thirsty? Like the food trucks, there are multiple bars around Ocean Cay where you can get anything your heart desires. Especially popular are the beach drinks served in a souvenir pineapple cup. One good thing is that your drink package from the ship also works on Ocean Cay, so you can get drinks here just like on the ship.

Facilities on Ocean Cay

For your comfort, there are a number of facilities on the island for your use.

Several different restroom stations are dotted along the island, and feature handicapped accessible stalls. Each restroom also has water fountains for you to grab a drink (disposable plastic bottles are discouraged on the island).

Each restroom station also has showers alongside the outside wall where you can rinse off the salt and sand from your day at the beach.

Showers to use on Ocean Cay

As of our last visit, lockers were nowhere to be found. However, most people seemed to just put their stuff in or under a lounger and no one else messed with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wi-fi work on Ocean Cay? Have an Internet package on the ship? The good news is that this service extends to Ocean Cay. So whether you want to check email, or post that selfie of you on the island to your Instagram, you can do it from the shore. You do need to connect to a different network, but if you paid for wi-fi for the cruise, you can use it on shore as well.

Do drink packages extend to Ocean Cay? Yes. One of the best perks about booking a drink package is that unlike most ports of call, you can use your package on the island just like you would on the ship. Since Ocean Cay is the cruise line’s private island, you can get your money’s worth from the package even while on land.

Are there towels available on the island? No. You will need to bring the beach towel supplied to you in your cabin or grab one from near the pool. Then you will need to bring this back with you when you go back the ship or drop it off near the exit of the island. There is a charge for any missing towels not turned in at the end of the cruise.

Do I need cash on the island? Mostly no. There are some shops that take U.S. dollars. Everything else, including bars and rental stations, you can use your room keycard just like you do on the ship.

Is there transportation around Ocean Cay? Yes. The island is large and walking all day around it is enough to wear anyone out. MSC offers carts hat goes to several spots around the island. The stops are large pavilions that offer some shade while you wait for your ride. Just hop on and hop off where you want.

Other Things to Know About Ocean Cay

cruise ship south beach

Shade is at a premium While Ocean Cay has transformed into an island paradise, it is still a work in progress. The cruise line planted thousands of trees, but they are still growing. As a result, many spots around the island are barren or only have some vegetation. That means natural shade is rare.

As for the beach, the thousands of loungers are free to use, but if you want an umbrella for shade, you’ll need to rent one for the day ($17 for the day)

Traffic can be bad on the island We’re only slightly joking when we say that traffic is bad. There are concrete walkways that weave around the island, but they are also used for the tram and for golf carts used by the staff.

The result is that pedestrians get pushed to the side or off the path to let these vehicles past. So when walking, watch your step and be mindful of these carts driving around.

Ocean Cay strives to be eco-friendly MSC is making a big push to have Ocean Cay do right by the environment. That means some huge moves like cleaning up the former industrial site the island is built on, but also smaller things. For instance, plastic bottles aren’t on the island so you’ll need to bring a reusable bottle or get a glass for water at the bar.

As well, sunscreens should be safe for coral reefs (it’s sold on the island if you need some). There are also no paper maps of the island to cut down on the waste.

Price List for Ocean Cay

As mentioned, the island is free to enjoy, but there are plenty of extras that will cost money. The prices below for various items are from a recent trip and are subject to change.

These go very quickly and are not assigned until you arrive. The Cabana and Deluxe cabana offer shade and comfortable seating. No bar service, no food service. Bring your own towels and snorkel gear for your own comfort. Try to get off the ship as early as possible as the shaded areas(Very limited) go fast. Umbrellas are available first come first serve. IF you have limited mobility and need wheelchair assistance to the beach there are beach wheel chairs, but they may be all over the island or already on the beach. I needed one and one was not available at the check out but was on the beach. We used one to get me in the water and to get me out. I am on crutches and scooter due to a broken ankle and it worked out for me just fine.

All of the cabanas were sold out on the MSC website. Are there other options for renting one once we get there ? I was very disappointed.

Gaza hostage rescue latest: 210 killed in operation, Hamas says; medics give update on freed Israelis

Israel announced it had rescued four hostages on Saturday in an operation that took place in Gaza. The Hamas-run health ministry says 210 people have been killed by Israeli operations in the area of the rescue.

  • Analysis:  Hostages rescue will be cathartic for Israelis - but Netanyahu is under pressure and infuriating the US
  • Live reporting by Jess Sharp  and (earlier)  Josephine Franks

The foreign secretary has echoed the prime minister (see previous post) in saying that the rescue of Israeli hostages will be a "huge relief to their families".

In a statement on X, Lord Cameron has called for a ceasefire agreement to "secure the release of all hostages and end the fighting".

He added: "My thoughts [are] also with [the] families of those still captive, and all the innocent lives affected by the conflict."

Rishi Sunak has said it is a "huge relief" that four Israeli hostages have been freed.

The prime minister said they had been through an "unimaginable ordeal" and it was "heart-warming to see the pictures of them reunited with their families".

He added on X: "We will continue to strive towards an end to the fighting as well as safety and security for all."

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah says it has fired Falaq 2 rockets at a military command centre in northern Israel.

A security source said it was the first time the group had used that type of rocket after firing the Falaq 1 on dozens of previous occasions, Reuters reported.

Hezbollah said it was acting in retaliation.

Lebanon's state news agency, NNA, said two people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the outskirts of the southern Lebanese town of Aitaroun.

The Israeli military said its soldiers identified a Hezbollah militant in the Aitaroun area.

An Israeli aircraft conducted an airstrike that hit the individual, it added.

Thousands of people have gathered in London for a pro-Palestinian protest today.

Those who marched from Russell Square to Parliament included children, parents, elderly and the disabled.

One speaker on stage estimated at least 150,000 people were there.

Marching outside Downing Street, protesters waved flags and placards and chanted slogans including "free, free Palestine" and "in our thousands, in our millions, we are all Palestinians".

Various speakers, including the Palestinian ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, gave speeches from a stage outside parliament.

"I am running out of words not only to describe the horror we are witnessing every single day, I am running out of words to help me understand how world leaders, how mainstream media cannot see, cannot report, cannot act," he said.

"I have questions. How do they sleep when they see the pictures of skeletal children shaking with fear?"

Protesters could be heard chanting and clapping in agreement.

The parents of Sharone Lifschitz were both kidnapped by Hamas during the 7 October attacks.

While her mother was freed earlier this year, her father remains in captivity.

Ms Lifschitz spoke to Sky News after the release of four hostages earlier today.

She said she was "very, very delighted" by the news, but she was "more concerned" about the hostages left behind.

"At this rate, the hostages will be there forever if we wait only for military operations to rescue them," she added.

Speaking about her 84-year-old father, she said it has been hard without him, and she hasn't heard any news about him for "more than 200 days".

"I'm very concerned for him," she added.

"My mum was of course very happy for the hostages that have been returned... but it gets harder and harder for you to keep your humanity about you and to keep hope alive."

Some hostages were killed during Israel's rescue operation, the armed wing of Hamas has claimed.

In a post on Telegram, al Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Ubaida said: "The enemy was able, by committing horrific massacres, to free some of its prisoners, but at the same time it killed some of them during the operation."

He also warned other hostages could be in danger.

"The operation will pose a great danger to the enemy prisoners and will have a devastating impact on their conditions and lives," he said.

Cheers erupted on a beach in Israel after the news of four hostages being released reach sunbathers.

People stood up from their sun loungers, clapped, cheered and through their fists in the air after their release.

Columbia will suspend coal exports to Israel in retaliation to the war in Gaza.

The country's President confirmed the move on X, saying exports would be halted "until the genocide is stopped."

Colombia, the world's fifth-largest coal producer, sent 56.7 million metric tons of coal abroad last year, including 3 million tons to Israel, according to government data.

Israel is a key destination for Colombian coal and shipments there generate about $165m a year in taxes, royalties and other contributions.

One of the hostages released today was Noa Argamani.

The 25-year-old was kidnapped from the Nova festival along with her boyfriend, who remains in Hamas captivity.

She has been one of the most widely recognised hostages, as the video of her abduction was among the first to surface.

After eight months apart, she was reunited with her father at Tel HaShomer Hospital this afternoon.

In a statement released on his behalf, he revealed today was his birthday.

"See what a gift I received for my birthday," Yaakov Argamani said.

"Noa has returned, and therefore I wish to say - Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has granted us life, sustained us and enabled us to reach this occasion.

"I want to thank each and every one of you, the President, the Prime Minister, everyone, each and every person. Let us not forget that there are still 120 hostages; we must release them.

"We must make every effort, in every way possible, to bring them here to Israel, to their families.

"One more thing, Noa is fine, thank God, she looks wonderful, looks excellent."

By Dominic Waghorn , international affairs editor

Of all the images on 7 October, among the most harrowing were of Noa Argamani being dragged into captivity by gun toting thugs on the back of a motorbike, her face wrought with anguish, her boyfriend led away helpless by other armed men.

Her rescue is hugely cathartic for Israelis, offering hope that their military, despite all its setbacks, can perhaps save more.

Her boyfriend remains unaccounted for, but Noa's apparent good health and that of the other liberated Israelis is reassuring too, though we cannot be sure what mental or other unseen trauma remains from their ordeal.

The rescue is some relief for Israelis after months of unremittingly bad news out of Gaza.

But, it may make the chances of more being released through negotiations less likely.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been under unrelenting pressure to be more willing to a ceasefire deal that would bring more hostages home.

That pressure will have been redoubled tonight had his war cabinet partner and political rival Benny Gantz resigned as threatened over the lack of a day after strategy for Gaza. He's decided for now to postpone that move.

But Netanyahu is still infuriating the US government.

President Biden last week said he had every reason to believe that the Israeli prime minster was prolonging the war to save his political skin. Quite the damning indictment from Israel's closest ally.

He is under pressure to make a ceasefire happen. The diplomacy towards that end has failed for several reasons. Hamas has been unyielding in the conditions it has set for agreement.

Israel believes that military pressure is the best way of breaking their enemy. And Netanyahu's far right coalition partners oppose such a deal.

They want the campaign to continue until Hamas is completely destroyed, and many among them also fantasize about the resettlement of Gaza by Israel.

A ceasefire deal could see Netanyahu's governing coalition fall apart. He has wanted to avoid that at all costs. Now that military efforts to rescue the hostages appear to be paying off, he may have less reason to pursue the diplomatic alternative.
