Members of the US Air Force rescued a mother and her sick child onboard a Carnival cruise ship hundreds of miles out in the open Atlantic Ocean last Saturday.

The dramatic rescue unfolded onboard the Carnival Venezia, which was secluded about 400 miles off the US mainland, according to a news release from the 920th Rescue Wing.

Two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen from Patrick Space Force Base in Florida sprung into action and were in the air “within hours of the call” for help.

The 920th Rescue Wing successfully conducted a civilian medical airlift operation of a critical patient aboard a cruise ship 350 miles off the eastern coast of U.S. May 4, 2024.

Flying onboard two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters and two HC-130J Combat King 11 took the service members 8 hours to pull off the rescue.

It required three helicopter air-to-air refuelings to “extended mission duration” given the “dynamic situations” since the ship was so far out at sea.

Upon arrival at the ship’s location, rescuers on one of the HH-60s needed to send down a hoist to retrieve the mother and her child from the ship.

Photos of the daring rescue show the unidentified woman and her son being hoisted up into the helicopter from the ship’s deck.

The child and his mother were safely taken into the helicopter, and he received medical attention while en route back to the mainland.

US Air Force rescuers are seen hoisting up on on the passengers onto the helicopter.

The cause of the medical emergency was not immediately clear, but officials said the “patient was successfully transferred to a hospital in the United States.”

“Everyone in the wing mobilized with exceptional speed,” said Capt. Dylan Gann, a pilot with the 301st Rescue Squadron.

“By uniting our efforts, we saved crucial time, delivering life-saving assistance six hours ahead of other response teams. Our collective determination and efficiency ensured the successful rescue and transport of the individual in need.”

The helicopters traveled 1,200 miles in the air to pull off the heroic rescue.

The Venezia was returning to New York City after various stops in the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

After the medical airlift, the ship continued its voyage to New York and ported on Monday.

The fearless rescue comes less than two months after the US Coast Guard  airlifted a woman suffering medical complications on board a Disney cruise ship  located about 180 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico in the Atlantic Ocean.

Footage posted by the US Coast Guard shows a rescuer being lowered onto the Disney Fantasy and then being raised by an MH-60T Jayhawk chopper to be flown to a hospital on April 15.

Critically Ill Passenger Airlifted from Cruise Ship in Atlantic 350 Nautical Miles Off U.S. Coast

The U.S. Air Force sent two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen to the scene

A U.S. Air Force rescue crew helped save a cruise passenger’s life.

The 920th Rescue Wing — which is the Air Force Reserve Command’s only combat search and rescue wing — said in a press release that its crew helped transport a “critical patient” who was onboard a cruise ship to a medical facility for treatment on Saturday, May 4.

They said that the ship had been located more than “350-nautical-miles” — or 402 miles — off the eastern coast of the U.S., and “within hours” of receiving the report of the ill passenger, two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen were dispatched to fly to the ship’s location to help the individual.

“Everyone in the wing mobilized with exceptional speed,” said Capt. Dylan Gann, 301st Rescue Squadron pilot, in the release. “By uniting our efforts, we saved crucial time, delivering life-saving assistance six hours ahead of other response teams.”

“Our collective determination and efficiency ensured the successful rescue and transport of the individual in need,” Gann added.

The 920th Rescue Wing said that it was a collaborative effort as staff sent “weather directed information” to the flight teams so that they knew how to reach the location safely, while flight doctors also worked to “find the right treatment facility” for the patient during the mission.

The helicopters eventually reached the location and pararescuemen retrieved the ill passenger and his mother, who were then “hoisted up into the helicopter.” The passenger received “medical attention” as he was being transported to the hospital, according to the 920th Rescue Wing.

Despite the mission’s success, the U.S. Air Force division noted that it wasn’t an easy one, as due to the cruise ship’s “remote location,” the helicopters required three “air-to-air refuelings” from a probe that transferred fuel mid-flight.

However, the 920th Rescue Wing said they were prepared for anything.

“This is what ready now looks like,” said Lt. Col. John Lowe, 920th Operations Group commander, in the release. “These real-world missions are what our countless hours of training have prepared us for.”

“Rescue was able to plan and execute this mission without hesitation,” he continued. “This combined arms team is highly trained in their field while understanding what role they play in the bigger picture and led to the successful completion of the mission.”

The 920th Rescue Wing said that over 1,000 miles were flown during the mission and it took eight hours to complete from when all the aircraft left Patrick Space Force Base, Florida.

Exclusive: Mom speaks out after Air Force rescued son from cruise ship

The ship was more than 350 nautical miles off the coast of North Carolina.

A mother from Massachusetts spoke exclusively to ABC News after her 12-year-old son was part of a high-stakes cruise ship rescue by the Air Force, hundreds of miles off shore.

Angela Bridges was aboard the Carnival Venezia cruise ship with her family, including son Aiden, en route to New York City from the Caribbean when he fell seriously ill, concerning the medical team on board.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Bridges recalled the moment health professionals said, "'We're going to do an x-ray,'" and told her, "'it looks as though he has a perforation in his bowel -- the next thing that we need to do immediately is get him off the ship."

At the time of the critical medical incident, the ship was outside of North Carolina and more than 350 nautical miles off the coast.

The 920th Rescue Wing of the Air Force, consisting of two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen, flew to the ship’s position to safely extract the patient for transport to the nearest capable medical center.

"We were standing there watching the whole time, and I, just, you know, screaming and crying over the helicopter blades," Bridges recalled. "It was very scary."

"The amazing thing about this rescue is is actually how smooth it went. We went from zero notification to having aircraft ready to having aircraft in the air. And the young man in the hospital in in just a manner of hours," Lt. Col. Dave Underwood told ABC News.

Aiden is currently recovering at a North Carolina hospital.

"I feel so much gratitude, gratefulness toward all the people who have been integral to my son's recovery," Bridges said. "It's not just the Coast Guard or the Air Force, or the doctors or the nurses. It's all of those people."

"Carnival Venezia's team worked with United States Coast Guard and Air Force officials to adjust its course Saturday so a medical helicopter could rendezvous with the ship when a guest on board needed treatment ashore. The ship then resumed its route to New York, arriving as scheduled Monday morning," Carnival said in a statement to ABC News.

US Air Force airlifts critically ill cruise ship passenger in dramatic 8-hour rescue

US Air Force airlifts critically ill passenger from cruise ship (920th Rescue Wing)

WASHINGTON (TND) — The U.S. Air Force made a dramatic medical rescue over the weekend and airlifted a critically ill passenger from a Carnival cruise ship 350 nautical miles offshore.

The mission conducted by the 920th Rescue Wing (RQW) on May 4 took over eight hours, more than 1,000 miles flown, and involved three helicopter air-to-air refuelings, according to a news release .

Additionally, two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft, and two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen were called into action from Patrick Space Force Base in Florida.

Due to the distance that had to be covered, a HAAR, "which involves connecting a probe from the helicopter to a drogue on the HC-130J aircraft, allowing fuel transfer mid-flight," also had to be deployed.

According to the news release, pararescuemen were hoisted down when the aircraft arrived at the ship and immediately began preparing the patient. The patient and his mother were hoisted up to the helicopter. The patient then received medical attention while on the way to the nearest hospital.

Information has not been released about where the patient was taken for treatment.

Carnival Cruise Line released a statement to The National Desk saying the "Carnival Venezia's team worked with United States Coast Guard and Air Force officials to adjust its course Saturday so a medical helicopter could rendezvous with the ship when a guest on board needed treatment ashore."

A spokesperson added the ship resumed its route to New York and arrived Monday morning as scheduled.

"Everyone in the wing mobilized with exceptional speed," said Capt. Dylan Gann, 301st Rescue Squadron pilot. "By uniting our efforts, we saved crucial time, delivering life-saving assistance six hours ahead of other response teams. Our collective determination and efficiency ensured the successful rescue and transport of the individual in need."

A mother and her child in crisis were airlifted by helicopter from a Carnival Cruise Line ship on Saturday in a hair-raising Air Force rescue.

Two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King 11 aircraft and two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen based at Patrick Space Force Base in Brevard County, Florida, flew 350 nautical miles off the U.S. eastern coast to reach the Carnival Venezia, the 920th Rescue Wing said Tuesday.

The ship had set sail on April 26 from Port Canaveral, Florida, for a 10-day cruise to the Bahamas and Caribbean. To reach the Venezia's location, rescuers needed three air-to-air refuelings, the Air Force said.

Dramatic photos show the unnamed woman and her son being hoisted up into the helicopter from the ship's deck.

Templeton boy falls ill on cruise ship, airlifted to hospital by military

TEMPLETON, MASS. (WHDH) - A Templeton boy was airlifted from a Carnival cruise ship after suffering a life-threatening illness hundreds of miles off the coast of North Carolina Saturday.

The Bridges were on a cruise ship heading from the Caribbean to New York, about 350 miles away from land, when 12-year-old Aiden got sick.

“Anxiety and scared, like the most scared I’ve ever been in my life,” said Angela Bridges, Aiden’s mother. “Wow, this is like the second worst thing that could’ve possibly happened, and it’s happening to my son right now.”

The United States Air Force flew a military helicopter to the ship and hoisted Aiden and Angela up inside, before flying them to a hospital in North Carolina. The helicopter was in the air for so long that the crew needed to refuel three times while still flying.

The Air Force said the rescue mission was a stunning success.

“To be able to help this family out and help this boy reach medical care feels good. The whole team feels good about it,” said Lt. Col. Dave Underwood, the mission’s commander.

From the ship, other passengers were clapping and cheering as Aiden was pulled skyward and flown to safety.

“I was just totally shocked and amazed how everything pulled together, and it was just astounding,” cruise passenger Marla White said.

Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement that the ship’s team worked with US Coast Guard and Air Force officials to adjust its course Saturday so a medical helicopter could help the ill guest.

Angela said she’s glad her son Aiden is recovering back on dry land.

“I feel really grateful and thankful for this situation turning out the way that it did, because of every person’s involvement,” she said by phone from her son’s hospital room.

A GoFundMe page for Aiden’s recovery was created by his mother.

Drone footage captured the moment a pregnant woman was airlifted from a Disney cruise ship by the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday.

A rescuer could be seen rappelling down from an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter onto the Disney Fantasy, floating in the Atlantic Ocean northwest of Puerto Rico , in video shared by the Coast Guard.

The 35-year-old woman was strapped to a gurney and reeled into the helicopter in the heart-pounding moment. The agency said the woman "required a higher level of medical care" than what on board doctors could provide in the ship's medical bay.

"Coast Guard watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a communication from the Disney Fantasy Monday morning requesting medevac assistance as the cruise ship was transiting 260 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico," the agency wrote in a press release.

"Once on scene, the Coast Guard Jayhawk aircrew deployed their rescue swimmer aboard the cruise ship, who prepared a rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor aboard the aircraft," the Coast Guard said.

An HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft was also flown in from Air Station Miami for the rescue.

The passenger was airlifted to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. From there, the agency said, she was whisked to Centro Medico Hospital.

"Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required," Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens said in a statement. "This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter."

"We are glad everything came together to help this passenger," said Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader for the case. "The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference."

Cruise ship passenger airlifted to hospital 800 miles from home 'against his wishes'

Oliver Browning | Monday 05 June 2023 10:23 BST

Cruise ship passenger airlifted to hospital 800 miles from home ‘against his wishes’

A cruise ship passenger has claimed he was airlifted to a hospital 800 miles from home against his wishes when the ship doctor misdiagnosed his “pulled muscle”.

Stephen Cassidy, 60, says he was taken off a cruise via helicopter after the ship’s doctor suspected he had an infection in his hip.

However, he was later told by medics in the hospital there was “no sign” of an infection - and that he had most likely pulled a muscle.

Mr Cassidy says he was left in Shetland, 800 miles from home, and “felt like a prisoner” when he was not allowed to leave the ship’s medical centre before being airlifted.

“While we are unable to share the details of this particular situation to maintain and protect patient data privacy, we believe that these allegations are completely without merit, ” a spokesperson for Princess Cruises told The Independent.

“Our ships and our medical teams are well equipped and experienced to care for guests who need medical attention, and we have established and well-practiced medical care protocols on board.”

The U.S. Coast Guard last week airlifted a 3-year-old girl from a moving cruise ship about 90 miles off the Santa Barbara coast after she suffered a medical emergency.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that the girl was rescued Wednesday afternoon after Princess Cruises ’ Emerald Princess ship reported a young passenger experiencing “seizure-like symptoms.”

Body-camera footage from a Coast Guard aircrew member who was lowered onto the ship showed the helicopter hovering just above the swimming pool and artificial turf on the Emerald Princess’ top deck. The child was seated on a gurney outside of a spa, the footage shows. The ship’s medical staff stood nearby as the girl leaned against her mother.

The child was handed a teddy bear before being wheeled to the deck, placed in a metal basket and lifted alongside her mother into an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from San Diego.

The girl and her mother were transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The child was in stable condition, according to the Coast Guard.

Pregnant Disney Cruise Passenger Airlifted Off Ship by U.S. Coast Guard: See Video

The 'Disney Fantasy' was 180 miles out at sea when Coast Guard members responded to a medical emergency involving the 35-year-old patient

A video shared by the U.S. Coast Guard on April 16 shows a passenger aboard the Disney Fantasy being airlifted into a helicopter

In the clip, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully performs a medevac for the pregnant patient

The Disney Cruise Line ship was located 180 miles from land when the Coast Guard responded to the call

A pregnant passenger aboard the Disney Fantasy was airlifted from the ship after experiencing health complications on April 15.

The Disney Cruise Line vessel was 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico in the Atlantic Ocean when the passenger “required a higher level of medical care ashore,” according to an April 16 press release from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A video of the incident shows the Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter aircrew executing a medevac in order to transport the patient safely to land by helicopter.

In the harrowing clip, an aircrew member gets lowered by rope onto the ship and at least seven crew members are seen carrying the woman on a stretcher. Per the release, the aircrew’s rescue swimmer then “prepared a rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor aboard the aircraft.”

The patient was met by local emergency medical responders at the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She was then transported to the local Centro Medico Hospital.

According to the release, Coast Guard members first got the call that there was a medical emergency aboard the ship on the morning of Monday, April 15.

“Watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a communication from the Disney Fantasy Monday morning requesting medevac assistance as the cruise ship was transiting 260 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico,” according to the release.

Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens stated in the release: “Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required. This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter.”

Cruise Passenger Dead After Going Overboard Near Norway

Picture of Frank M

  • June 8, 2024

A cruise ship passenger has died after going overboard during a Norway fjords cruise. In the early hours, a man overboard alert was triggered on MSC Euribia.

The ship was en route to the town of Flam, Norway. It happened in the Sognefjord, the largest fjord in Norway and the second-largest fjord in the world.

Man Pronounced Dead in Hospital

A large cruise ship sails on calm waters towards a distant shoreline under a clear sky, unaware of the tragedy unfolding—a passenger overboard incident reminiscent of a recent Norway event.

According to Vincent Roos of the Southern Norway Rescue Center, a helicopter, air ambulance, and several boats were deployed, some of which were nearby.

The operation was completed quickly, with rescuers locating the man within one hour. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead after being airlifted to a hospital in Bergen.

The passenger hasn’t been publicly identified but is a foreign male in his late 50s traveling with his spouse.

The MSC Euribia arrived in Flam, where police were expected to interview crew members and any relevant passengers. Police will also view video surveillance footage.

Police Investigation Underway

Police Superintendent Kristoffer Jorddal Lønning said they will conduct a full investigation, including an autopsy. We have several hypotheses. It could be an accident, a criminal act, or an intentional act,” he told local media .

MSC Euribia is on a week-long cruise roundtrip from Kiel, Germany, with port calls, including Alesund, Norway. It is due to return to Kiel on Saturday.”

This is not the first man overboard incident on the ship this year. In March, a Scottish man went missing after going overboard as the ship sailed to Hamburg, Germany.

There have been other overboard incidents on MSC ships this year, including the death of an elderly American guest in Malta on the MSC World Europa in February as the vessel was docked at the port.

A cruise passenger on the Royal Caribbean “Icon of the Seas” cruise jumped overboard, prompting a search and rescue mission where the passenger ultimately was found dead.

The passenger jumped from the 1,200-foot-long ship shortly after it left Miami, Florida, for Honduras Sunday morning, according to a statement from the Coast Guard obtained by The New York Post.

Once people noticed the emergency, the ship immediately halted its operations and the 2,350-person crew conducted a search-and-rescue mission. The ship stayed put for two hours, according to Cruise Hive.

The passenger was brought back onboard in critical condition. He eventually died of his injuries.

It is unclear what caused the man to jump, although his identity is being kept secret for the privacy of the deceased individual and his family.

The “Icon of the Seas,” which is the world’s largest cruise ship, took its maiden voyage in January 2024.

Alaska set to limit daily number of cruise ship passengers who can visit Juneau

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: June 6, 2024 / 4:59 AM EDT / CBS News

Cruise aficionados looking to experience Alaska's capital, Juneau, may have to vie for permission to disembark and step foot on land, under a new agreement between the city and major cruise lines that sail there.

The agreement between Juneau and Cruise Lines International Association in Alaska (CLIA), finalized last week, seeks to limit the number of daily cruise passengers who can arrive in Juneau to 16,000 on Sundays through Fridays, and to 12,000 on Saturdays, effective in 2026.

The measure intends to limit the congestion and wear and tear tourists can cause a city. Visitors to Juneau skyrocketed to a record 1.6 million last year, after the pandemic depressed numbers for two years. Other popular cities have taken similar measures to limit tourists and their effect on daily life for residents. For example, Venice, Italy, in April became the first city in the world to charge day-trippers a fee just to enter  on peak days.

Alaska's new agreement is designed to cap levels of visitors to roughly where they are now.

"The cruise industry is vital to our local economy, and we need to improve our infrastructure and grow our tour capacity to create a great guest experience and reduce impacts on residents," Juneau Visitor Industry director Alexandra Pierce said in a statement Tuesday. "With this agreement, we are committing to a cap to manage our busiest days and to meet annually to ensure that our visitor numbers remain sustainable."

CLIA, the cruise lines association, applauded the measure, calling the agreement "a well-balanced and thoughtful approach to keeping Juneau a great place to live and visit."

"Ongoing, direct dialogue with local communities is the best way to jointly self-regulate to preserve great resident and visitor experiences while providing a predictable market for the many local businesses that rely on the cruise industry," CLIA said in part in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch.

In Alaska, residents have complained that record numbers of visitors contribute to bad traffic and increase noise pollution when they visit glaciers by helicopter. On the other hand, many local businesses rely on the cruise industry and the steady flow of visitors it provides, the city of Juneau acknowledged in a statement .

Alaska Climate Tourism Tipping Point

Cruise seasons have also been extended from early April to late October, offering year-round residents little reprieve from tourists' presence.

Under a separate agreement, only five large ships are permitted a day during the current cruise season.

Pierce said other projects in the works will also likely diminish the impact tourists have on the city. They include installing a gondola at the city's ski area, updating its downtown sea walk and expanding capacity for visitors at the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area.

City leaders are "trying to balance the needs of our residents, the needs of our economy, the needs of future opportunities for people to stay in our community," she said.

The agreement has its skeptics, though. Cruise industry critic Karla Hart says the new measure isn't sufficient to curb unsustainable levels of tourism. "It feels like we're just getting led along again, and expansion will continue and more time will pass," she said, according to the Associated Press.

Hart is behind a local ballot proposal that would ban ships of at least 250 passengers from stopping in Juneau on Saturdays or on July 4.

Nearly 70 Celebrity Cruises guests sick in norovirus outbreak

Nearly 70 Celebrity Cruises passengers got sick in a norovirus outbreak during a recent cruise.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 68 of Celebrity Summit’s 2,264 guests reported being ill during a cruise that ended on Friday, along with five crew members. Their main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

The ship is currently sailing week-long Alaska voyages between Vancouver and Seward, according to CruiseMapper . In response to the outbreak, the cruise line isolated sick guests and crew and collected samples for testing, among other steps, the health agency said.

There were an isolated number of cases on board and the impacted guests are no longer on the ship, according to Nathaniel Derrenbacher, a spokesperson for Celebrity’s parent company Royal Caribbean Group. Summit was also sanitized.

The news follows another norovirus outbreak on Celebrity Constellation in January that left nearly 100 guests sick. The CDC has logged seven outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruises that met its threshold for public notification so far this year. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in all but one.

Hochman, a hospital epidemiologist and the section chief of infectious diseases at NYU Langone Health’s Tisch Hospital, told USA TODAY in April that those happen in communities on land, too.

“There's not something special or unique about cruise ships,” she said at the time. “It's really any type of congregate setting, but it's also happening out in the community on a much smaller scale among households and household contacts. It just doesn't come to the attention of public health as much as it does for larger congregate settings.”

I've worked on cruise ships for years. I always see passengers make these 13 mistakes.

  • I've worked on cruise ships for over six years, so I've seen many passengers make mistakes.
  • Missing the ship at port or booking excursions with outside operators could be costly and risky.
  • If you don't set your phone to airplane mode, you may rack up overseas roaming charges.

Insider Today

After over six years working on ships for a major cruise line , I've witnessed tons of travel blunders that prevent guests from having the best possible experience.

Here are 13 common mistakes I see travelers make:

Not reading the fine print can lead to conduct issues later

Passengers usually come on the ship excited for a good time, and for many, this involves a drinks package . And with lots of drinks can come rowdiness.

I've come across a few troublemakers who had no idea that smashing Champagne glasses in the hot tub could get you booted off the ship.

Every passenger consents to a hefty conduct policy when they book the cruise, so make sure to read through it to know what's prohibited on board.

Make sure to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming charges

Cellular rates at sea can sneak up on you, and you can easily rack up a $500 roaming bill.

Even if you're not actively on your phone, most are still using data, so make sure to put yours on airplane mode to avoid roaming charges.

Really, just turn your phone off unless you're using it to take photos or access the ship's WiFi.

Many passengers don't take advantage of the different dining options on board

I often see passengers eat all three meals at the buffet every day. I know some people just really love the self-serve option, but it surprises me how many guests have no idea what's included with their trip.

Many times, the biggest shock to most first-time cruisers is that the dining room is included on most ships. Yes, this means a sit-down meal where you can order seven appetizers, five entrées, and 12 extra cookies for a midnight snack.

There are also so many spots with free food around most ships, like a pizza station, 24-hour ice-cream machine, and small cafés. Just be aware that specialty dining, like the steak house , might cost extra.

Leaving your room key behind is more of a hassle than you'd expect

It is not just a room key — it's your onboard credit card, ticket on and off the ship, and identification for the week.

Everything is connected to that card, so make sure to set up your information online ahead of time so you can start swiping the moment you get on board.

Security will scan it when you pass through the gangway to know who is on or off the ship, so it's especially important to have it on port days.

If you lose it, report it to the service desk immediately to ensure that no one else spends your money.

Many guests don't know they can bring their own wine on the ship

While many people think no outside alcohol is permitted on the ship, many major cruise lines allow passengers over the age of 21 to bring a bottle or two of wine on boarding day, so you can stop smuggling drinks in empty mouthwash bottles.

Some terminals will even sell wine to boarding travelers. If you buy alcohol in a port, you'll usually have to check it upon reentering the ship, and it'll be delivered to your room on the last night.

Missing the all-aboard time on port days is an expensive mistake

In my years of working cruises, I have seen more than a handful of guests miss the ship.

Although this is a huge fear for most passengers, it usually happens to avid cruisers — people who have been to the port many times before sometimes assume the all-aboard time is always the same.

Related stories

But this time varies by cruise, and it's stated on multiple signs at the exit gangway, in the daily planner, and in the captain's announcement.

Also, always triple-check whether the all-aboard time is based on the ship's clock or the local time.

If you miss the ship, you'll often have to get yourself to the next port, which can be very pricey.

Passengers miss out on discounts by not booking their next cruise while still on the ship

Booking a future vacation while on a ship can get you bigger discounts on cruises , access to new itineraries not open to the general public yet, and a lot of onboard credit.

These booking appointments are usually filled up by the last few days of the cruise, so head there at the beginning of your stay for more deals and no wait.

Booking a tour with an outside operator can be risky

Although it might be a lot cheaper to book your tours independently, it's also a lot riskier.

Excursions booked through the ship are with verified operators. Most cruise lines will wait for the ship's tour to return before leaving the port, even if it's hours late.

But this is not the case if you book on your own, and running through the port to find the ship sailing away is probably not the excursion you're looking for.

Immediately removing the automatic gratuity affects many staff members

On most cruise ships, there is a preset daily gratuity charged per passenger unless it's removed at the guest-services desk.

I see so many people come on board and immediately remove the charge, but this fee is usually split between your housekeeping, dining, and cleaning staff. It is essential to their jobs and affects their livelihoods.

I'd recommend waiting until the end of the cruise to make sure you're happy with the service instead of removing it on day one. You can also increase or decrease the amount instead of cutting it.

Packing prohibited items can lead to a headache

As confident as you are that you can sneak on your portable iron, I seriously advise against packing anything that's not allowed on board.

Security scans your bags on embarkation day, and if a prohibited item — like an iron, a bottle of vodka, or a candle — is found, they will hold your bag.

Your luggage won't be delivered to your door, and you may have to wait several hours until security contacts you, brings you to the holding area to search the bag, and confiscates the item until the end of the cruise.

Prepare your necessary travel documents to avoid trouble at ports

Cruise ships travel all over the world, so check if you need specific visas or documents based on your nationality.

You are responsible for knowing and bringing your own paperwork. If you don't have the right documents, you might not be able to get off at a port or, even worse, be allowed back on the ship.

I saw this happen when traveling to India with many American guests, a handful of whom didn't realize they needed a visa.

Dressing down on formal night can limit your dining options

Even though walking through the promenade in shorts is your choice, many guests aren't aware that there's usually a formal evening on most cruises.

Most passengers don evening gowns and suits on formal nights, and I've met cruisers who wished they would've packed at least one nice item — besides their Margaritaville shirt, of course.

Passengers not formally dressed on this evening usually aren't allowed to eat in the ship's main dining rooms, though the buffet is open to everyone.

It's worth learning the difference between port and starboard

Different announcements will direct passengers to either the port side or starboard side of the ship, so it's best to brush up on the jargon before your vacation.

Port is the left side of the boat and starboard is the right, always configured facing the front of the ship.

Just remember that "port" and "left" are both four letters. You'll thank me later.
