With its intriguing combination of traditional and modern architecture, ancient history and popular culture, Japan has become one of the most sought-after cruise destinations in Asia—not least because so much of the island-nation, with its long coastline, is accessible by water.

International cruise lines finally returned to Japan in March 2023 after a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19 border closures . The result has been pent-up demand for Japan cruises, and cruise lines have responded by introducing a wide variety of sailings in Japan for this year and next. You can cruise Japan on a smaller, more intimate yacht, an expedition vessel, an ultra-luxury ship, or a large cruise ship with more than 2,000 passengers.

Regardless of which ship you choose, the best Japan cruises feature itineraries that include neon-and-skyscraper cities, tranquil shrines and temples, beautiful parks and gardens, and hot springs and snow-capped peaks, including Mount Fiji. Depending on the time of year you choose to sail, you can enjoy springtime’s cherry blossoms or the crimson leaves of fall. Cruise passengers will also get to experience a wealth of cultural encounters, from local food and customs to colorful arts and entertainment.

For those who are as excited as we are about the return to Japan, here are our picks for the best Japan cruises.

Abercrombie & Kent

Best for viewing cherry blossoms or fall foliage

If your goal is seeing Japan’s famous cherry blossoms, luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent has chartered a Ponant ship for the height of the season, from March 27 to April 9, 2024. A similar fall sailing will show off Japan’s fall foliage. The cruise is on the Le Soleil , capped at 199 passengers. With its expedition team and local guides, A&K is focusing on cultural experiences such as private performances by the world-renowned Kodo taiko drummers, Kabuki warriors, and geishas as well as time spent in scenic Japanese gardens. In Hiroshima, passengers will meet a storyteller who will discuss the World War II atomic bomb attack. Onboard lectures and presentations will be led by specialists in Japanese history and culture.

Abercrombie & Kent’s 13-night Wonders of Japan cruise from Osaka to Sapporo starts at $21,485 per person (includes two nights at the Ritz-Carlton Osaka).

Celebrity Cruises

Best for families

The 2,138-passenger Celebrity Millennium , complete with an alfresco movie theater and a supervised Camp at Sea program with more than 500 activities, is the perfect option for families; it will cruise in Japan from May to early October 2024. The line’s Best of Japan sailings embark from Yokohama, near Tokyo. After exploring the vibrant capital city, key ports will include Kobe (known for gourmet marbled beef) and Hiroshima, as well as lesser-known gems (on select itineraries) such as the hot springs of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido. All sailings include an overnight stay in Osaka, with time to head to the celebrated temples, shrines, and overall beauty of Kyoto (one hour away)—or passengers can stay in Osaka and visit the world’s largest aquarium and Universal Studios Japan.

Celebrity’s 12-night Best of Japan cruises start at $1,799 per person.

Best for local immersion

For something different, try a destination-immersive luxury floating hotel on Japan’s island-rich Seto Inland Sea with a local company. An artisan-built ship called Guntû does three- to five-day itineraries. Carrying only 38 passengers, it’s designed by the Japanese architect Yasushi Horibe to resemble a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. The decor is minimalist and modern, with lots of wood and glass details. For a splurge, some of the suites come with their own open-air tranquil onsen baths. When you are not off exploring remote villages, dine on cuisine envisioned by a renowned Tokyo chef Kenzo Sato from Shigeyoshi, indulge in seafood-rich creations at the sushi bar, sip craft cocktails, and participate in tea ceremonies. In the spa, there’s a communal bath, where you can join other guests while taking in water views.

Three-night sailings with Guntû from Hiroshima start at $4,127 per person.

Lindblad Expeditions

Best for a mix of culture and nature

Lindblad Expeditions is exploring Japan with a couple of new itineraries in August and September 2023 and again in September 2024. The 16-night Coastal Japan: Imperial Dynasties and Modern Culture route (which includes two hotel nights in Tokyo) sails between Niigata and Kobe and will focus on both cultural attractions, such as temples and art studios, and natural wonders, including on Japan’s subtropical islands. A 15-day Sailing the East China Sea: Japan, Okinawa, and Taiwan itinerary includes the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The ship is the 138-passenger National Geographic Resolution , with attractions that include a NatGeo-certified photographer onboard to help you capture Japan’s beautiful scenery with aplomb.

Lindblad’s 16-night Coastal Japan sailing starts at $24,650 per person, and the 15-night East China Sea itinerary starts at $20,050 per person.

Enjoy the turquoise-blue waters of the islands that make up Japan’s Iriomote Ishigaki National Park.

Best for getting off the beaten cruise path

Upscale French line Ponant explores Japan with its 184-passenger Le Jacques-Cartier and is doing some of the most innovative cruise itineraries currently available in Japan—in an expedition style, with naturalists leading landings in inflatable Zodiacs. The area of exploration is the subtropical southern islands with a focus on the Okinawa archipelago and the Yaeyama Islands in the Ryukyu Archipelago, and the lush Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Seven-night itineraries in March and April 2024 include time on pristine beaches on islands such as Ishigaki and Kume, as well as snorkeling excursions and diving opportunities. Out of the water, you’ll visit traditional villages for cultural experiences such as drum and dance performances.

Ponant’s seven-night sailing between Keelung, Taiwan, and Kagoshima starts at $6,470 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Best for ultra-luxury cruising

All-inclusive luxury cruise line Regent Seven Seas Cruises is sailing to Japan in October on the Seven Seas Explorer , one of the world’s most luxurious ships. Fares include shore excursions, such as indulging in hot springs on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu; exploring Kagoshima, known as the “Naples of the East” for its caldera bay and volcano; and learning porcelain traditions in Sasebo. Among other stops, guests will also visit Kyoto and Shimizu, for views of Mount Fuji.

Regent Seven Seas’ 11-night Japan cruises start at $15,199 per person, with business-class airfare included.

Windstar Cruises

Best for cuisine

Windstar Cruises , the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation—and with dishes from prestigious chefs featured on the ships’ menus—is exploring Japan in September and October 2023 with its 312-passenger, all-suite Star Breeze . A 10-night Grand Japan sailing between Yokohama and Osaka affords deeper exploration of smaller ports, including in the Seto Inland Sea (larger ships can only get so deep into the island region). From Kagoshima, Windstar passengers will visit the lunar landscapes and lava fields of Sakurajima Island and from Shingu, the mountain-perched Kamikura-jinja Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As part of the James Beard partnership, Tracy Chang, chef/owner of Pagu restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, will be onboard cooking, doing demonstrations, and leading a market tour, on a September cruise. Her cuisine celebrates Spanish and Japanese tapas, paired with wines and sakes.

Windstar’s 10-night Japan sailing starts at $3,499 per person.

Like so many important port towns, Edo started off as a sleepy fishing village. This one, however, surprisingly grew up to become Japan’s capital, the biggest metro area on earth… and was later renamed “Tokyo.” For decades now it’s felt a bit like it’s living in the future… and you can probably say it is, with all the tech and neon and energy that flows throughout iconic neighborhoods like Akihabra and Shibuya. But with all the upgrades installed, Tokyo’s traditional culture hasn’t been replaced, best seen through the residential neighborhoods of narrow streets lined with traditional homes. And that’s not to mention the green spaces, like the city’s ample national parks, gardens, shrines and temples. Some can’t-miss spots are Imperial Palace Plaza in the city center, Tokyo Tower — which tops even the Eiffel Tower — plus the imposing Mount Fuji is always happy to join the city’s skyline for a photo.

Gotta See Tokyo?

We have a few ideas for you.

Seabourn cruises the islands of Japan during the breathtaking springtime cherry blossom season. The country offers a dazzling array of attractions, from the warm seas, coral reefs and sandy beaches of its subtropical southern archipelagos to Tokyo’s glittering neon wonderland, the tranquil Buddhist and Shinto temples and gardens of Kyoto and Osaka and the picturesque forested mountains of Hokkaido island in the north. Western travelers may not be aware of the sun-and-sand appeal of  Ishigaki ,  Miyakojima  and Okinawa, but their white sand beaches draw vacationers from Asia to enjoy sunny, Caribbean-esque leisure activities. Naha, on Okinawa, adds appeal with the  UNESCO World Heritage -cited Shureimon Gate of its Chinese-style castle.  Amami Ōshima, between Okinawa and Kyushu, is under consideration by UNESCO Natural World Heritage for its unique ecosystems and endemic species.

Kyushu is the nearest of Japan’s islands to the Asian continent, with important sites such as  Fukuoka ,  Nagasaki  and Sasebo, where the Dutch established the Japan’s first Western trading port. At the southern end of Kyushu, Kagoshima has been compared to Naples in Italy, because it is also dominated by views of an active stratovolcano, Sakurajima.  Kitakyushu  has a  UNESCO -listed Kokura Castle and a quirky museum to the toilets manufactured by the TOTO company.

Takamatsu , on the smallest of Japan’s main islands, Shikoku, has a museum dedicated to the late designer and sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Its port of Kochi is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists, drawn to Shikoku by its photogenic five-story Chikurinji Pagoda.

Honshu, Japan’s largest island, holds many of the sites most familiar to Westerners, including the capital Tokyo with its Imperial Palace, historic Asakusa district, the shopping and entertainment meccas of Ginza, Roppongi and the dazzling electronics emporia of Akihabara. Accessed from the important port of Yokohama, an evening here could include a kabuki performance, or the astonishing teenaged fashion, cosplay and anime-fans in Shinjuku. The temples and gardens of Osaka,  Kanazawa  and Kyoto; the iconic views of Mt. Fuji from Shimizu; the timeless traditions and immense tombs of Sakai; colorful festival displays in Aomori; and hidden gems such as  Sakaiminato  with its six-story Matsue Castle are all to be found on Honshu.

Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost main island, with looming, darkly forested mountains and the colorful indigenous traditions of the Ainu ethnic group.  Hakodate  has a Museum of the Northern Peoples to orient you, as well as the celebrated ‘Snow Monkeys’ that winter in the Yunosawa Onsen hot springs.  Kushiro  is blessed with a warming current that keeps it balmier than nearby Sapporo and offers a wetland refuge for serene Japanese cranes.  Otaru , by contrast, was an active trading port throughout the 19th century and has Western-style ‘herring mansions’ built by European traders and a Yoichi Nikka Whisky Distillery.

Throughout the length of its island chain, Japan holds many delights for guests voyaging there with Seabourn.

The 6 best 2023 cruise itineraries to book right now

That's why I've rounded up some of 2023's most exciting itineraries. From interesting new routes to tried-and-true ones that now have new ships, this list will prime your sense of wanderlust for both far-flung destinations and places close to home as we head into the new year. Japan on Ponant's Le Soleal

cruise in japan december 2023

After nearly three years of shutdowns and restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan finally reopened to travelers in November 2022. That includes cruise passengers, and several lines — including Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises (which is offering special "Spice Route" voyages that include Japan) — are returning.

However, the most exciting Japan itineraries I've spotted for 2023 are a couple of routes offered by Ponant 's Le Soleal. Not only is the line the first expedition ship to take passengers to Japan's southern islands, but its itineraries are also Japan-focused routes that don't include other countries like the ones offered by Holland America and Celebrity.

Details: The first route is an eight-day voyage, March 24-31, 2023, offering visits to traditional villages of the Okinawa archipelago and the Ryukyu Islands, as well as Ishigaki and Kume. Prices start at $6,000 per person for an ocean-view cabin.

The second route is an eight-day sailing from Osaka to Fukuoka, May 15-22, 2023, taking passengers to stops in the Seto Inland Sea, the oldest sea route in Japan. Fares start from $7,310 per person for an ocean-view room. More information on Ponant's Asia voyages can be found on the line's website .

In a first for Hurtigruten , the line is offering a selection of sailings around the west coast of Africa, including the islands of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau's Bissagos Islands, which are made up of more than 80 beachy islands and islets, only about 20 of which are populated year-round.

Cape Verde voyages are rare, making this ideal for anyone wishing to check the country off their bucket list. Plus, with Hurtigruten's rapid expansion beyond its traditional Norway offerings and into expedition cruising, you can be one of the first to try out this first-for-the-line itinerary, which will be available four times in late 2023 (and into early 2024), departing from Dakar, Senegal.

Details: These 13-day sailings on Hurtigruten's Spitsbergen depart from Dakar in November and December 2023 and January 2024. Prices start at $5,974 per person for an inside cabin. More information can be found on Hurtigruten Expeditions' website .

Ohio and Mississippi Rivers on American Queen Voyages' American Countess

cruise in japan december 2023

It's no secret that American Queen Voyages has been sailing U.S. rivers for years. But what makes this particular itinerary special is that it will be the line's longest ever. The 23-day cruises , which include travel on both the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, will be offered on the line's newest ship, the 245-passenger American Countess .

The vessel will feature stops in some of America's most notable small towns, including La Crosse, Wisconsin; Dubuque, Bettendorf and Burlington, Iowa; Hannibal, St. Louis, Kimmswick and Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Paducah, Henderson, Owensboro, Brandenburg, Louisville and Maysville, Kentucky; Madison, Indiana; Point Pleasant, West Virginia; and Cincinnati and Marietta, Ohio.

Details: The first voyage is set to begin in Red Wing, Minnesota (near Minneapolis), on July 24, 2023, and end in Pittsburgh on Aug. 15, 2023. The reverse itinerary will begin on Aug. 15, 2023, when the ship reaches Pittsburgh. Prices start from $10,599 per person for an inside cabin. You can find more details on the line's website .

The Middle East on Windstar's Star Legend

cruise in japan december 2023

If you're looking for a cruise destination that's a bit more far-flung, Windstar Cruises is offering Red Sea and Persian Gulf sailings in the Middle East — a first for the line, which will sail its newly stretched Star Legend in the region, beginning in fall 2023.

The line will offer four different itineraries, but my favorite is the 10-day Persian Gulf option from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, which includes calls on places like Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates and Khasab, Oman. The ship will also visit the UAE's island of Sir Bani Yas, which is known for nature and wildlife conservation. The sailings include overnights in Doha and Abu Dhabi, too.

Details: This itinerary is offered 11 times, beginning in November 2023 and running into early 2024. Fares start from $3,499 per person for ocean-view accommodations.

Caribbean and Bahamas on MSC Meraviglia and Carnival Venezia from NYC

cruise in japan december 2023

Although Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries aren't a new thing from New York, two cruise lines will have a new presence there starting in 2023: Carnival Cruise Line with Carnival Venezia, which will begin sailing from Manhattan in June, and MSC Cruises with MSC Meraviglia, which will be based at Brooklyn's Red Hook terminal beginning in April.

The itineraries are fairly standard at first glance, but what's key here is that, for the first time, the lines' private islands — in this case, Carnival's Half Moon Cay and MSC's Ocean Cay Marine Reserve — will be accessible via sailings traveling round-trip from New York.

Details: Between April and December 2023, MSC Meraviglia is offering 11 seven-night sailings calling on Port Canaveral (near Orlando), and Nassau and Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, both in the Bahamas. Prices start from $399 per person for an inside cabin. More info can be found on the MSC Cruises website .

From June through December, Carnival Venezia will sail one eight-day Bahamas voyage that includes Nassau, Freeport and Half Moon Cay, with prices starting from $484 per person for an inside cabin. During that time, the vessel is also scheduled to run five eight-day Eastern Caribbean cruises calling on Amber Cove, Grand Turk and Half Moon Cay, with fares starting at $684 per person for an inside cabin. For additional details, visit the Carnival website .

Australia/New Zealand on Disney Wonder and Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady

cruise in japan december 2023

With Australia and New Zealand finally picking up steam again post-shutdown, it's not surprising that some cruise lines are sending ships to the region for the first time in 2023. Beginning in November, Disney Cruise Line 's Disney Wonder will sail 14 two- to six-night voyages from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne — calling on places like Hobart and Eden in Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; and Noumea, New Caledonia — through the end of the year, offering Disney fans another option in terms of destination.

Plus, starting in December 2023, Virgin Voyages ' brand-new Resilient Lady will offer five two- to 14-night sailings from Melbourne, providing locals with a more modern ship. (It's rare for the Australian market to see brand-new vessels.) Voyages include stops in Hobart, Burnie or both Tasmanian ports. On the two-week sailing, ports also include Sydney, as well as Picton, Napier, Tauranga and Auckland in New Zealand.

Details: Disney Wonder's per-person fares for inside cabins start at $946 for two nights, $1,604 for three nights, $2,000 for four nights, $2,118 for five nights and $4,078 for six nights. For more information, visit the Disney Cruise Line website .

Virgin Voyages' per-person prices for interior accommodations start from $245 for two nights, $613 for five nights, $753 for six nights and $2,240 for 14 nights. Check out the Virgin Voyages website for more details on these cruises.

Where did it go wrong?

Where did it go wrong?

It's not been a tournament to remember for Hege Riise, her team has massively underwhelmed — only impressing while crushing the Philippines, which is realistically the bare minimum that is expected from her team.

Norway's tournament was perhaps overshadowed by the dispute with Caroline Graham Hansen after saying she had been "stepped on for a whole year" after being dropped for the 0-0 draw with Switzerland.

Ikeda's team beat Riise's on every tactical level. Much improvement needed moving forwards, a lot of underutilised talent.

All smiles

Great to see,

Futoshi Ikeda's masterstroke

Futoshi Ikeda's masterstroke

Futoshi Ikeda has done a fantastic job bringing through a fantastic crop of young players, playing a excellent football in a diverse range of styles.

Ikeda has previously managed the Under-17 and Under-20 teams, leading them to victories as the 2017 AFC U-19 Championship and the 2018 Under-20 World Cup.

A large number of his players from those teams are reflected in his selection this time around and there is a clear closeness between this squad.

Keeper credit

Keeper credit

Ayaka Yamashita really shouldn't have had a chance with this one! Superb goalkeeping to keep it out, right at the edge of what was saveable.

Chloe Morgan

Magnificent Miyazawa

Magnificent Miyazawa

Hinata Miyazawa now has 5 goals which takes her to top goal scorer of the competition so far.

She's not even a striker!

FT: Japan 3-1 Norway

FT: Japan 3-1 Norway

Japan deserve that, there can be no doubt.

They outclassed Norway in every aspect of the game and were good value for their win.

Sweden or the United States await.

From keeper to keeper

90+4' Japan 3-1 Norway

Yamashita may have pulled off the save of the tournament with her huge leap and lightening reactions.

She had to arch back to claw the ball out of the goal mouth to stop Norway's second goal, which could have been the goal which inspired a last minute come bac

SUPERB SAVE

90+1' Japan 3-1 Norway

What a save from Ayaka Yamashita! Norway are throwing everything they can at the last few minutes here but Yamashita is equal to it!

Saevik's header is going back across the goal and the striker had already started celebrating! However, the keeper sprang towards the top corner and clawed it out from being a certain goal!

Five minutes added.

Superb performance

89' Japan 3-1 Norway

Yui Hasegawa deserves major credit for her role in Japan's performance, Norway haven't been able to contain her range of passing or dribbling ability.

We're heading into the 90th minute and she's still going non-stop. Duracell.

Fantastic Fujino (UK)

86' Japan 3-1 Norway

Miyazawa's finish was excellent but what a ball from Aoba Fujino, just 19-years old too? So much potential in this Japanese team.

81' Japan 3-1 Norway

Ruthless counter! Hinata Miyazawa gets her fifth goal of the tournament!

79' Japan 2-1 Norway

This is much more positive from Norway.

Caroline Graham Hansen and Saevik play a great one-two to make space on the edge of the box. Frida Maanum has a go but her shot is straight down the middle allowing Ayaka Yamashita to save comfortably.

77' Japan 2-1 Norway

Karina Saevik is the beneficiary of a lucky break as a Japanese tackle deflected the ball into her path.

The striker swivels and shoots but drags her shot just past the post.

Norway's best chance of the half.

Attacking change

74' Japan 2-1 Norway

Tuva Hansen makes way for Ada Hegerberg.

A striker on for a left-back... no ordinary striker at that.

Ueki is SHARP

What an introduction, Ueki bullies one player off the ball and skins another.

She attempt to whip the ball across the Norwegian goal which Mjelde diving headered back towards her own goal.

Hearts in mouths...
