free virtual tours to travel the world for free

A comprehensive list of free virtual tours that will intrigue and delight all types of travel lovers. Discover the Seven Wonders of the World, visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites and iconic landmarks around the world from the comfort of your home! Experience your first virtual travel experience with us.

With extensive travel bans, citywide lockdowns and strict social distancing measures, it’s hard not to eventually let cabin fever weigh you down. This is especially true if you’ve got a healthy addiction to travel like us. So we’ve found a way around the problem – virtual travel!

Obviously it doesn’t replace the real thing, but it’s better than nothing. It’s also a great way to get travel inspiration and learn some interesting facts about the destination until we can travel again.

It will give you something positive to look forward to while we all do the responsible thing and #stayhome. Treat it like Facetiming the world!

It’s also a great thing to do with kids at home. They’ll especially love the wildlife live webcam feeds! This list is guaranteed to keep them occupied for days if not weeks!

So whether you love city escapes, exploring museums or learning interesting facts about the natural and man-made wonders around the world, there’s something for everyone.

Make sure you share this with your friends and family who love travelling too.

What Do You Need To Virtual Travel The World

Virtual touring the world is easy. All you need is a laptop, cellphone or tablet and an internet connection. You don’t need a VR set (virtual reality set), but if you have one it’s a bonus.

We recommend using Google Chrome web browser because some of these virtual tour websites are not in English. Chrome makes it really easy translating foreign languages to English or whatever language you prefer.

Lastly, have a little patience as some of these virtual tours take a bit longer to load.

New Seven Wonders Of The World Virtual Tour

Everyone’s heard of the Seven Wonders of the World. But did you know that there are two different lists for the 7 Wonders of the World?

No? We didn’t either. The list most people know is the New Seven Wonders of the World. But there’s also the Ancient Seven Wonders of the World.

Are you one of the those rare humans that can list all New 7 Wonders of the World?

virtual tour the 7 wonders of the world including great wall of china, christ the redeemer, chichen itza and petra

1. Great Wall of China

Often cited as the only human-made structure that is visible from space. The Great Wall of China is probably the most well known Wonder of the World. It captures over 2,000 years of history and stretches more than 21,000 km across several provinces in China. That’s as long as 5 times the length of Australia!

This iconic landmark is usually teemed with tourists all year round. But you can visit it crowd-free on this Great Wall of China virtual tour.

2. Chichen Itza, Mexico

The ancient city of Chichen Itza is one of the most well restored Mayan sites in Mexico and also its biggest tourist attraction. El Castillo may be the most famous pyramid of Chichen Itza, but there are many other ancient ruins to explore.

If you love astronomy, you’ll love learning how each structure was intricately designed to align with specific planets and stars. Sounds fascinating?

You can virtually tour Chichen Itza and explore some of its most popular sites and facts right from the comfort of your own home.

3. Christ The Redeemer, Brazil

The cultural icon of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and a symbol of Christianity across the world. The Christ The Redeemer statue is the largest art deco statue in the world. It stands 38 meters tall (around 13 storeys high) and stretches 28 meters wide.

It was built by the Roman Catholic community of Brazil following the end of World War I. The community was concerned about the growing ‘godlessness’ when Brazil officially became a republic and the church was officially separated from the state.

You can skip the 200+ step climb to the top on this stunning virtual tour of Cristo Redentor .

4. Petra, Jordan

Also known as the ‘Carved City’ or the ‘Lost City’, Petra is known as one of the oldest cities in the world. It is estimated that the city was established in the 4th century (312 BC) but was only discovered by Western civilisation in the 1800s.

Only 15% of Petra has been explored by archaeologists, so not much is known besides it being home to about 800 tombs.

It’s simply one of those places that you have to see to believe that it exists in real life. Petra is still on our travel bucket list, but this virtual tour is probably one of our favourites!

machu picchu, rome colosseum and taj mahal virtual travel experience

5. Taj Mahal, India

One look at the Taj Mahal and it’s easy to see why it’s a wonder. It’s considered to be one of the most magnificent masterpieces of architecture in the world. Besides that, it’s also a symbol of love. Don’t believe us? See the Taj Mahal in VR for yourself.

The emperor built it in remembrance of his third wife who passed away giving birth to their 14th child. Today the couple remains buried together beneath the main inner chamber of the Taj Mahal.

It took more than 22,000 workers, 1,000 elephants and 22 years to build this incredible structure. Now there are concerns that it will crumble into pieces as its wooden foundations are rotting away.

6. Rome Colosseum, Italy

Did you know that Italy has the most number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world? There are a total of 51 World Heritage sites within Italy of which the Colosseum is the most famous.

Historically, the Colosseum was a place where gladiator fights and executions took place in Ancient Rome. Today it stands as a symbol of power and majesty of the Roman Empire. It’s also one of the most popular tourists attraction in the world.

7. Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu is famous for being the Lost City of the Incas. It is believed that this is where the Incas escaped to when the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century.

Besides its historical significance, Machu Picchu also showcases the Incas’ incredible mastery of stone. The stones used to construct some of the most beautiful structures in Machu Picchu were cut so precisely and wedged so closely together, that a credit card cannot be inserted between them.

Not only was this more aesthetically pleasing, it also has engineering advantages. The stones were designed to bounce through earthquake tremors and fall back into place. This was only possible because no mortar (or cement) was used and the reason why Machu Picchu still stands today.

Virtual Tours of Top UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Top unesco sites in africa.

famous unesco world heritage sites in africa include the drakensberg mountains, great pyramids of egypt and kilimanjaro

8. The Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt

The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the most famous landmarks around the world. Its sheer colossal size and perfect symmetry makes you wonder how this world icon was constructed more than 4,500 years ago.

Today, the Pyramids of Giza are the only surviving members of the Ancient Seven Wonders of the World.

9. Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania

Kilimanjaro is one of the largest volcanoes in the world and also home to Africa’s highest mountain.

If you love hiking as much as we do, then Kilimanjaro is probably on your bucket list too. Close to 35,000 people attempt to hike Mount Kilimanjaro every year. But only 40% of them successfully reach the summit and around 5 to 15 people die every year attempting it.

There isn’t a proper virtual tour of Kilimanjaro , but you can get some awesome 360 panoramic views using Google Map street views. Just drag the little yellow man to the circles on the map to ‘explore’ the area.

Save Me For Later

10. Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa

Not only is the Drakensberg Mountains a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, it’s also a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site. Drakensberg is culturally significant because it hides more than 20,000 San rock paintings inside its nooks and crevices.

These rock paintings are important because they represent the earliest form of human creativity. They also symbolise the beginning of art in the world today.

We’ve had the privilege of hiking the Drakensberg Mountains when we lived in South Africa. If you plan to hike it too, make sure you read our top Drakensberg hiking trails of the Royal Natal National Park . We also share tips on how you can hike the Drakensberg with children .

Since that’s not possible right now, you can enjoy the magnificence of the Drake nsberg on this beautiful virtual tour.

Top UNESCO Sites in Asia

world heritage sites in asia like bagan, angkor wat, terracotta army in china

11. Bagan, Myanmar

Bagan is known as the ‘sea of temples’ because it has the largest concentration of Buddhist temples in the world. There were originally 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries built here in the 1000s and 1100s. But only 2,000 of them still exist today.

Needless to say that the entire Bagan Archaeological zone is too vast to explore by foot alone. You can compliment your walk with a ride on old rickety bicycles, hot balloon rides or on this mind blowing virtual tour of Bagan .

12. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat is famous for being the largest religious monument in the world. Yes, it’s even bigger than Bagan! Before the fall of Angkor Wat in the 15th century, it was actually the largest city in the world.

Unlike Bagan, most of Angkor Wat still exists today. It was built with durability in mind because it was designed and dedicated to the immortal gods.

13. Terracotta Army, China

This World Heritage Site isn’t a temple, but a mass grave. It’s the burial ground for the First Emperor of China and his world renowned Terracotta Army.

No one knows exactly how many terracotta warriors were made. But it’s been estimated that more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses were sculpted. And if that wasn’t amazing enough, each soldier has its own distinct facial features and were all built to life-size.

It took around 40 years to ‘build’ the entire army and its sole purpose was for protecting the emperor in his afterlife.

You can wander between these soldiers yourselves on this Terracotta Warrior virtual tour.

Top UNESCO Sites in Europe

virtual tour of top unesco world heritage sites in europe like stonehenge and the acropolis of athens in greece

14. Acropolis of Athens, Greece

‘Acropolis’ translates into ‘high city’ in Greek. Most cities in ancient Greece had their city centres built on a mound or a hill. This is where they would build their important temples and where citizens could retreat to if under attack.

The most famous acropolis of Greece is, of course, the one in Athens with the iconic Pantheon dominating its skyline. The Acropolis of Athens has withstood the test of time, including bombardments, earthquakes and vandalism. Yet it still stands today as a reminder of the rich history of Greece.

15. Stonehenge, United Kingdom

Also known as the Bronze Age Ring of Standing Stones, Stonehenge is one of the UK’s most unique sites and visited attractions. It’s a prehistoric monument steeped in all kinds of myth and speculation because no one knows its true origin or purpose.

Some believe that Stonehenge was a Druid temple, built by ancient Celtic pagans as a centre for their religious worship. Others believe it to have astronomical significance as the light from sunrise and sunset aligns with the stones during summer and winter solstice.

Why don’t you decide for yourself based on the interesting facts you’ll learn on this Stonehenge virtual tour.

Top UNESCO Sites in North and South America

world heritage sites in the US and south america

16. Mesa Verde National Park, USA

Mesa Verde is the largest and one of the most spectacular archeological sites in the USA. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it encapsulates how Native Americans once lived by carving their homes into the cliff.

It’s one of the most well preserved ruins of the Ancestral Pueblo people in North America and you can virtually explore Mesa Verde right from the comfort of your own home.

17. Mayan Ruins of Tikal, Guatemala

At first glance, the Mayan Ruins of Tikal appears to be quite similar to the ruins of Chichen Itza. They were both major cities in the history of the Mayan civilisation and are both declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The biggest difference between the two is that Tikal is less visited and often less crowded compared to the more popular Chichen Itza. That’s because Tikal is located in the remote Guatemalan forests whereas Chichen Itza is much easier to access.

Some areas of Tikal remain unmapped or excavated too. So if you love hidden gems, make sure you visit the Mayan Ruins of Tikal , even if it’s only by virtual tour for now.

18. Easter Island, Chile

Easter Island is a Chilean island in the south Pacific Ocean. It’s famous for its 900+ giant statues known as Moais, which are scattered around the entire island.

It is believed that the Rapa Nui natives built these Moais to honour chieftains and important individuals from their village. They believed that by doing this, the spirit of the person would forever watch over the tribe and bring good fortune.

Today, Easter Island is believed to be the most remote inhabited island in the world. That’s why it’s also very expensive to get to. But have no fear, you can admire Easter Island virtually until then.

More than a 1,000 years ago, Doge’s Palace was the home to the ruler of Venice and the seat of power for the Venetian Republic. Today it is one of Venice’s must-see museums. Wander around the corridors of the Doge’s Palace or along one of its many surrounding canals on this beautiful virtual tour.

28. The Catacombs of Paris, France

It’s no coincidence that the word ‘catacombs’ rhymes with ‘tombs’. The Catacombs of Paris is the world’s largest underground burial site. The city was growing too fast for its cemeteries to handle the bodies of the dead. The solution was to move the bodies and bury them underground. Archaeologists estimate that around 6 to 7 million bodies were buried down there. Creepy…

Download and Go: Do-it-Yourself Walking Tours of Great Cities

By Frommer's Staff

Paper or audio, there are plenty of options for downloadable walking tours of the world's great cities, and many just happen to be free. So before you set out on that next great world tour, you may want to spend a little time scouring the internet for specialized, themed, and generalist tours of your favorite destinations. We've done a bit of the hard work for you and here are a few tours to get you started

Plug and Play for Free

Even if you're not super proficient at all things technology-based, there's a good chance you still own an iPod or MP3 player (even if you need a friend or relative to load the music on it for you). I must admit, that at time, I am a bit download challenged. But when it comes to seeking out the best traveling ideas, I am willing to give anything a go.

Although I like the idea of taking a formal walking tour in a new city, I am not too keen on doing it with a large group and would prefer to do things at my own pace. Which makes the idea of being able to find a tour I like and just download it -- either in a printed version with a map or in audio format straight on to my iPod -- is perfect. The fact that it happens to be free, makes the deal even sweeter. All you need is Internet connection, (free) podcast software and a way to listen to your files (MP3 player or similar).

The free download is particularly prevalent for European destinations, where dozens of city government and local tourism authorities recognize the added value of having such easy access to great tours on the cities' websites. You can either search for individual tours on respective city, state, or country tourism websites; some are available (still for free) through Apple's iTunes website. All you need to do is download Apple's podcasting and music software, iTunes at www.apple.com/itunes/download .

The city of Dublin ( www.visitdublin.com/iwalks/iwalks.xml ) has a series of different walks (iWalks) and you can access them through the above website or through Apple's iTunes. Subscribe to iWalk podcasts and new iWalks will be automatically downloaded for you when they become available. It's easy and totally free. Currently there are twelve themes and each iWalk comes with a full-color brochure featuring maps and illustrations by historian Pat Liddy.

Tours include Croke Park -- exploring the history of Dublin and the connection between the city, Croke Park Stadium, and the Gaelic Athletic Association; Guinness iWalk -- a journey through Dublin city center, outlining the story of how Guinness has been part of the city for centuries; Georgian Dublin; the Historic Northside; Castles and Cathedrals; Viking and Medieval Dublin; Temple Bar to the Docklands; In the Steps of Ulysses; Kilmainham; Dalkey and Dun Laoghaire; and Malahide to Portmarnock. Apart from English (with a lovely Irish drawl), the downloads are also available in French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

Jerusalem ( www.jerusalemp3.com ) also offers a selection of 13 free downloadable walking tours that take in various parts of city. All you need to do is visit the website and register (provide you name and email address) and you can download an audio tour, printed versions, and maps, plus watch a video of each tour before you go so you will be more familiar with the sites when you are on the ground. An added benefit is that you can choose to download only selected sites on each tour if you particularly don't want to visit one included destination you're your time is limited.

Tours, ranging from approximately two to six hours in length, include Zion Gate to Jaffa Gate visiting the Dormition Abbey, the Last Supper Room, King David Tomb, the Armenian Quarter, the Christ Church and David's Citadel; Mount of Olives to Kidron Valley visiting Mt. of Olives observation point, Mt. Of Olives churches, Absalom lookout point, and a panoramic view of the City of David; and Via Dolorosa starting at the Lion's Gate and ending at the Tomb Garden with highlights including the 14 stations of Jesus, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Redeemer's Church.

Paris is the prefect walking city, and one of the most beautiful and eclectic areas is Le Marais. For an insider's look at this colorful neighborhood, download a free audio walking tour from Let Them Talk ( www.letthemtalk.com/pariswalks/parisaudiotours.html ). The people who put these audio tours together actually run language classes in Paris so this is a bit of a side project for them. Their four tours include Marais and Place des Vosges; Le Marais' restaurants, ice cream, deserts, and boulangeries; Le Marais Past and Present; and The Heart of the Marais, discovering the Jewish quarter and its history in Paris.

Cityzeum ( www.cityzeum.com/podcast/rss-en.xml ) provides a free downloadable audio tour that takes in ten impressive and monumental sites in Paris. The tour itself could take you several days to complete, featuring visits to notable locations such as the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre Museum and Sacre Couer, and is a helpful guide to those wishing to see the sites at their own pace. Each site has a separate audio file so you choose bits and pieces to download.

Da Vinci Code fans will appreciate Peter Caine's "Walking 'The Da Vinci Code' in Paris" free audio tour ( www.walkingthedavincicode.com/walkingtour.html ). Discover the "palace of symbols" known as the Paris Opera, the beautiful royal square, Place Vendome, the magnificent Tuileries Gardens, and much more. Of course Peter also sells real walking tours of Paris and has written a book, so there is sure to be some gratuitous advertising laced through the free audio tour. A printable map is also available on the website.

And for a more extensive range of free individual Paris downloads (over 30 areas and locations), including Pigalle, Ile St Louis Quartier, Saint Germain des Pres, Champs Elysees, and the La Defense Quartier, visit www.podcastdirectory.com/podcasts/23497 .

Buenos Aires' ( www.bue.gov.ar/audioguia/?info=quees ) tourism department offers visitors and those who are just interested to learn more about their great city, 12 different free downloadable "circuits" or Mobile audio guides for walking tours around town. Areas featured include Recoleta, Retiro, Palermo Viejo, La Boca, Montserrat, San Telmo, and Avenida Corrientes. The website also features downloadable maps or you can pick up copies at local tourist information centers. Even if you don't have an MP3 player, you can access these audio guides via a cell phone for the cost of a local call when you are in Buenos Aires. Tours are in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

Although they do charge for some of their downloadable audio tours (approximately A$10 to A$14), Talk N Tours ( www.talk-n-tours.com/catalog/index.php ) features a number of free downloadable podcasts for destinations in Australia and New Zealand on its website. Currently, free podcasts include Melbourne Laneways and Ettalong Beach in New South Wales.

Another good resource is iAudio Guide ( www.iaudioguide.com ), a website that features over 50 cities around the world with close to 40 free downloadable versions (other payable tours range from €5 to €10 each depending on the city).

And of course, no round-up of downloadable guides and walking tours would be complete without a mention of our own Frommer's website at www.frommers.com/rss/frommers_walking_tours.xml which currently features two day by day free audio walking tours -- one cultural and historical tour of Greenwich Village, New York and the other, of The Da Vinci Code 's Paris featuring numerous key sites from the book -- both adapted from Frommer's Day by Day guides.

Ratings and Reviews

Wonderful idea. solid info. buggy execution..

Let me stare up top I paid for the pro version. This app is overall a wonderful idea. The tours and walking maps are too notch. The information and depth of guides available is amazing. It has SO much potential and is a great value. That being said, a lot of the design choices are just not intuitive, user friendly, and in some cases are downright buggy. Example? There is no way to turn off audio when starting a route to a location. Each time you need to do if manually. Also, when downloading the map, you get a notice that the map is in your downloads… but you can’t exit out of that notice until you close and reopen the app. There are dozens of minor annoyances like that that would take too long to list. At the end of the day though, I have used this for about 6 cities, and have appreciated the content But I hope they do a redesign to make it less glitchy and more intuitive. This app has potential to become really big if they do.

Cheaper than a guided tour

Okay, I see some negative reviews about the map and the clunky app, but I have to say for the price, and yes, including the new yearly subscription, it’s still very worth it. I have used 6 of the paid tours and a few free ones with GPSmyCity. I started with the free, but when I paid for the upgrades (less than $5 at the time), I was pleased. Because I travel at least once or twice a year, I’m willing to pay the subscription mainly to support the team. I just recently came back from Florence where my wife and I spent over $200 for a private guided walking tour that included a fantastic lunch. No complaints, the guide was great and we learned a lot, but it was only 4 hours long and we were at his mercy. For less than $20 using this app, we would’ve been able to map out the tour we wanted, read in advance, and take our time. Yes, you can use Google and Pocket Earth and other free tools, but come on - for $20 you can get a well organized and fun tour with a pretty decent offline map. Spending hundreds in flight and hotels, I don’t $20 for something that would cost 3 times or more for a true guided tour. Oh, and the support team has been awesome for times when I did have problems with the app. I’ve been using them for years and will continue to do so. Don’t let the few negative ads steer you away - give it a shot...

Adore this app!

I downloaded this app a few days ago, and started using it to plan a multi- city trip to Europe. Wow! I love this app - it makes planning super easy. I’ve been traveling far and wide, both professionally and personally, for years. I’ve planned complex trips, and know how overwhelming it can get. So many places to see in so little time, and so sometimes tough to determine which sights to see, and the best route to take when sights to visit are scattered all over a city. Well, this app makes all of this easy, and fun! Great descriptions and photos of all sights, which ones are “must see sights”, ability to add your own sights (like your hotel). The app determines the best route and how long it will take you. There are tons of wonderful canned walks based on categories like “city overview,” “ museums,” “architecture,” etc. and the ability to create customized walks. If you love to travel, this tool will become an addiction. I tried the free version and then decided to upgrade to the full version because the route creation aspect is fantastic.

Best things to do in Istanbul

Istanbul, the capital of Turkey, is one of the most intriguing destinations on the planet , as its geography makes it an interesting cross between East and West.  It was first called Byzantium and later on, was changed to Constantinople before being renamed as the current day Istanbul, an economic and cultural mecca and also the highest populated city in the country. Istanbul was a strategic location for several empires over its history, such as the Roman, Byzantine or the Ottoman. With this history, the city enjoys a rich cultural and architectural history.

In Istanbul, the free tours take place every day, at different times of day, from the morning to the afternoon and evening so you can adapt and get to know the city at your pace. You can also choose from different tours in different languages that will take you to different monuments or neighborhoods of Istanbul. Reserving your tour is free and you can do as many tours as you’d like while you are there.

The gurus are reviewed by other walkers who have done their free-walking tours and their opinions are all written in an easy-to-read manner online. 7 Detroit tours that tell a deeper story of the city: What to know

A s a little boy, about 8 years old with his brown hair spiked in the late ‘90s style, Gabriel Gutierrez would take his brother’s hand and cross the street from his parents’ tortilla business, enter a heavenly smelling donut shop, pass the lively store patrons, and order a coffee for his mom or their employees.

For himself, he’d order a white cream Long John, somewhat like an éclair, just to eat the cream.

These days, Gutierrez owns that hand-cut donut shop, Donut Villa, in southwest Detroit, which has ties not only to his personal history but that of his family, whose first southwest Detroit business opened in the 1940s. It is part of the greater fabric of community histories that make up Detroit’s story, as told by the City Institute on one of their "Detroit in Context Learning Journey" tours.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The City Institute is one of a number of organizations to offer tours that go a bit deeper than sightseeing and basic headlines in Detroit. The groups seek to give context to where Detroit is now, where it is going, and often to correct the record on where it’s been.

Some tours explore the once prominent Black Bottom neighborhood, some explore Detroit’s history with the Underground Railroad, some explore Corktown, and ones like the City Institute’s "Learning Journey" also bring the city’s story forward to today and look to the future.

Though not a definitive list of all the tours in Detroit, here are some tour groups and guides to help deepen your knowledge:

City Institute

The "Learning Journey," on which Gutierrez’s business was featured , is a yearly, all-day bus tour that goes neighborhood by neighborhood so that attendees can hear from business owners, investors, and nonprofit and city leaders on the history of the neighborhoods, what’s currently offered there, how it supports itself, and future projects. A shorter version of the tour is also offered, primarily for private tour groups.

The City Institute’s mission is to equip residents and stakeholders to build an inclusive, equitable and thriving future for Detroit. Southwest, with its shifting demographics over the last century, is just one neighborhood that can serve as a foundation for those seeking to understand the city a bit better, said Gutierrez.

“There's a lot of history and a lot of stories,” Gutierrez said of the city. “Not always great, right? And for people to just understand that the communities that they are involved with, they have extensive roots and histories of their own that can provide context.”

Learning the city’s wins also encourages retention and keeps energy to fight for Detroit’s future, by the telling of Jeanette Pierce, founder and president of the City Institute.

“We believe it's important for people to understand how we got to where we are … then come to today, where we actually meet and hear about and talk to people doing amazing work in the city,” said Pierce.

  • Topics: Public tours include a virtual one on redlining, a form of housing discrimination, walking ones on architecture, specific neighborhoods including New Center and Black history, as told by those who lived it
  • Cost: Public tours - free (with donations welcome) - $20, with "Learning Journey" tours $125 including meals; Private tours and private "Learning Journey" tours: $20 -$100 per person
  • Length: 1.5 hours for virtual redlining history tours; generally 2 hours – all day for others
  • Mode of transportation: Walking, bus or virtual
  • Where to register: thecityinstitute.com/public-tours

(Note: Tour costs, lengths and topics vary for most organizations named in this story. Many are open to creating special programs upon request. Contact each tour guide and group for further details)

Black Scroll Network History & Tours

Jamon Jordan, Detroit’s first official historian, was appointed to his role in 2021 by Mayor Mike Duggan. Before that, however, he was already known as a prominent unofficial historian of the city, founding the Black Scroll Network History & Tours.

While Jordan said he encourages folks to do the tours that exist on restaurants, bars, the auto industry and the like, he said he realized they were leaving out a big part of the Detroit story – African American history.

On his various tours, Jordan may point out the neighborhood where three Detroit music legends grew up or talk about the presence of Black people in the region in 1700s. Some tours also explore the once thriving Black neighborhood and business district that were destroyed through racist officials, urban renewal and highway building , with Jordan pointing out the still present apartments, townhouses and school building that were given the space instead.

“A big portion of Detroit’s history is invisible, and you have to have someone help you see what is no longer present,” he said.

  • Topics: Motown, slavery, African origins, Black Bottom, the Underground Railroad, the 1967 rebellion and more
  • Cost: Generally $5 - $50 for walking tours, $60 per person for bus tours, and $50 for virtual tours
  • Length: 2 hours for most
  • Mode of transportation: Walking, bus and virtual
  • Where to register: Black Scroll Network's Eventbrite page for public tours, and [email protected] or blackscrollnetwork.weebly.com for private tours

Wheelhouse Detroit

Another way to get a deeper knowledge of the city? By bike.

Wheelhouse Detroit is a bike shop along Detroit’s riverfront, but tours have been a part of its mission since its opening in 2008 thanks to owner Kelli Kavanaugh and her founding partner’s backgrounds in community development.

“It was important for us to tell a story of Detroit that isn’t necessarily the one that the masses hear or understand to be true,” she said, later adding: “We’re not cheerleaders, we’re trying to tell a real story of a very interesting and complicated city.”

This story includes discussion of history and current developments. On the Corktown tour she gives, Kavanaugh delves into how freeway development, urban renewal, and parking for Tiger Stadium shaped the neighborhood as it is now, along with gentrification there. She also uses history to counter any belief that it only got “cool” now.

  • Topics: Poletown churches, Eastern Market, Hamtramck, the auto industry, techno and more.
  • Cost: $30 for shorter, weekday tours ($40 including bike rental), $45 for 3-hour tours ($55 with rental) and private tours starting at $200-$250 for up to six people.
  • Length: 2 hours for shorter, weekday tours, 3 hours for others
  • Mode of transportation: “Pedal power,” using bikes or e-bikes, used manually. Attendees can bring bikes or rent from Wheelhouse Detroit
  • Where to register: wheelhousedetroit.com

Ken Coleman

As a Detroit historian, journalist and communications professional, Ken Coleman likes to say he’s been dedicated to chronicling Black life in Detroit since 1991.

His extensive historical knowledge goes back way further, of course, and it’s his passion to share Black history as an independent tour guide, covering whatever topics in that area a client may want.

Some favorite stops include the Gateway to Freedom International Memorial along the Detroit riverfront which pays homage to those who used and were involved in the Underground Railroad . There’s also the Second Baptist Church of Detroit, which lays claim to being the oldest religious institution owned by the Black community in the Midwest, a former station on the Underground Railroad and establishing the city’s first school for Black children.

  • Topics: Motown, the Underground Railroad, Black Bottom and more
  • Cost: Prices starting at about $50 per hour per small group, and generally $300-$500 for a 3-4 hour tour for a larger organization
  • Length: 1-2 hours for walking tours, 3-4 for bus tours
  • Mode of transportation: Walking or bus, if provided
  • Where to register: Email Coleman at [email protected] or call him at 313-551-1304

Preservation Detroit

Preservation Detroit was founded in 1975 as a student organization fighting the demolition of historic campus buildings at Wayne State University. These days the group works to preserve historic sites throughout Detroit, and it hosts tours on the history of architecture, sculptures and more to educate the masses.

A high point of downtown tour coordinator Davis Zaleski’s walking excursion is a visit to the Guardian Building, the 1920s, cathedral-like, Art Deco skyscraper. There’s also a quick stop by the recently reopened 38-story, Italian Renaissance-style Book Tower.

“During the early part of the 20th century, with the advent of the auto industry and all the other industries, they built like crazy and they built some of the most beautiful buildings in the country,” Zaleski said.

Some of that history has been torn down or poorly developed, but preservation has increased over the years, Zaleski said. Preservation Detroit likes to emphasize good development, and Zaleski said he hopes attendees walk away with an appreciation for what Detroit was and could be.

  • Topics: Ferry Street, Midtown, Eastern Market, downtown, public art, cemeteries, churches and more
  • Cost: $15 for members, students and seniors; $18 for all others on public tours; private tours, per the website, can be arranged for $100 for groups of five people or less and rates of $20 per person for larger groups
  • Length: Between 2 and 2.5 hours
  • Mode of transportation: Walking
  • Where to register: preservationdetroit.org or through Eventbrite

Detroit History Tours

Detroit History Tours, along with the Detroit History Club, serves several purposes, said Bailey Sisoy-Moore, executive director of the two. Key among its motivations are the ideas that Detroit’s history should be written by Detroiters and that it’s hard to defund or vote to implode historic sites that are fully understood.

“History education helps make sure that the important parts of our history don't disappear quietly,” Sisoy-Moore said.

The tour group tells the history of the city starting with the Native American tribes that were here first through to present day and even future development plans.

  • Topics: Suffragettes, the Detroit People Mover transit system, cops and mobsters, LGBTQ history and more
  • Cost: $27 for walking tours, $30-$65 for bus tours, $5 - $20 for self-guided mobile app tours with lifetime download; food tours are $80 - $120, including the meals and tips. Private tours start at $250 if transportation is provided, $450 for walking and $1,525 for tours with the van or bus provided by Detroit History Tours.
  • Length: 2 hours for walking tours, 90 minutes to 3.5 hours for bus tours
  • Where to register: detroithistorytours.com

Detroit Historical Society

Founded in 1921, the Detroit Historical Society now boasts tours at not only the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, but also at locations throughout metro Detroit.

Guided tours at the historical museum take groups of 15 or more people through the indigenous populations that were here, auto history, culture and more, said Kimmie Dobos, manager of education and public programs. There are also tailored museum tours that dive deeper into the African American experience and what led to the 1967 rebellion.

The Great Lakes museum, on Belle Isle, also features a maritime history tour exploring Detroit’s long history on the water from canoes to freighters and more.

For some off-site explorations, there are “Behind The Scenes” tours of historic locations including neighborhoods, a gallery, and a battlefield.

  • Topics: The summer of 1967, Temple Beth El, Boston Edison, Eastern Market, tiny homes and more
  • Cost: Guided tours at the museums are $11 for adults and $10 for seniors, the 1967 rebellion tour is $12 for adults and $11 for seniors, and the “Detroit’s African American Perspectives” tour with Jamon Jordan is $300 for up to 20 people.“Behind The Scenes” tours are $25 for members and $35 for nonmembers.
  • Length: Generally 1- 1.5 hours
  • Where to register: detroithistorical.org

Of course, these are just some of the tour offerings in the city. You also can see the sights with a Segway tour , by boat and there’s even a tour to learn some Detroit history on a historic bar tour , among others.

  1. GuruWalk

A "free walking tour" is a guided tour at a travel destination, where a local guide explains history, culture, and lifestyle. Currently, it is the first option that tourists choose when they visit a new city. The concept can be a little confusing since "free" in English is a word that immediately makes you think free of cost.
