Welcome to the vibrant Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), previously known as Saigon. Just one generation ago, HCMC was a war zone. But now, the city has transformed to become a dynamic commercial hub with modern skyscrapers and lively streets. Yet it hasn’t forgotten its past! You can easily find serene pagodas and temples, where the smell of incense fills the air with peace. And if you’re eager to learn more about the city’s history, there are plenty of museums filled with artifacts, stories and memories.

No matter your flight schedule, our friendly guide and driver will warmly welcome you upon arrival and take you to your hotel in the city center. Once settling in, you will have a chance to explore HCMC at your leisure. Why don’t you start your first day in Vietnam with some local street food? HCMC is truly a melting pot of cuisines, combining ingredients and recipes from many different regions and cultures. If your taste buds need direction, allow us to suggest some must-try dishes like cơm tấm (broken rice), bánh xèo (crispy pancake), and the most iconic ốc (snails/shellfish).

Overnight in HCMC

Morning: Your day begins with an incredible journey to Cu Chi Tunnels. We’ll explore just a small part of this 250 km underground network built by Vietnamese back in the wartime. These massive tunnels were not only war shelters but also kitchens, hospitals, command centers and secret storages for food and weapons. While crawling through the tunnels, you’ll hear incredible stories about the Viet Cong guerrillas who lived, fought, or even sacrificed here during the Vietnam War. Later, your lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Let’s head back to the city center, and our guide will take you to the War Remnants Museum. You’ll have the incredible opportunity to witness documents, images, and artifacts that realistically depict the devastating impact of the war in Vietnam. And it’s a miss if we conclude the day without savoring any local food. HCMC is a true melting pot of cuisines, blending ingredients and recipes from various regions and cultures. So, put on your helmet and hold on tight, we’ll weave through the bustling traffic on scooters to the best eateries in town. From banh xeo (crispy pancakes) to ca phe sua da (iced coffee with condensed milk), and che (dessert soup), you’ll get to taste them all.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Overnight in Hue

Morning: Journeying out of the city, we head to the lush countryside of the Mekong Delta, often called ‘Vietnam’s rice bowl’ because of its abundance of rice paddies, fruit orchards, and flower gardens. When we arrive at Cai Be, we’ll hop onto a boat and cruise over to Tan Phong Island. Grab a bike and pedal along tranquil village paths to know more about the local way of life. Along the way, we can even stop by some handicraft workshops to see talented locals weaving water hyacinths. Then, it’s back on the boat to cross the mighty Mekong River to An Binh Island, where we’ll meet our homestay host and indulge in a traditional lunch packed with mouthwatering Mekong Delta specialties.

Afternoon: Once our bellies are happily full, it’s time to explore the homestay orchard. You can wander around, picking seasonal fruits straight from the trees and sipping on tea while enjoying some lively traditional music. And for dinner, get ready to roll up your sleeves and join the host family in preparing some delicious local dishes. We’ll gather around the spacious veranda overlooking the garden to savor our food together.

Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Overnight in Mekong Delta

Morning: Your second day at Mekong Delta starts with a walk along the village. You’ll be welcome to some local cottage industries and taste some freshly made rice paper, coconut candy, and pop-rice right from the source. Next, we journey by sampan, a traditional low-riding wooden boat and enjoy being paddled slowly along the maze of small canals. We’ll make a stop at the brick kilns village to witness skilled artisans crafting beautiful pottery from clay. Along the way, don’t miss the chance to see how catfish are farmed right on the Mekong River! Finally, we’ll gather at Vinh Long shore and head to the bustling center market, enjoying the vibrant trading scene of the locals before returning to HCMC.

Afternoon: We’ll head to the airport for a short flight to Hue, the formal imperial capital of Vietnam. You will have a chance to explore Hue at your leisure.

Meals included : Breakfast Overnight in Hue

charming vietnam travel

Morning: You’ll start your day with a cycling adventure around the charming streets of Hue. First up, we’ll visit the sacred Nam Giao Altar, where the Kings of Nguyen Dynasty offered sacrifices to the Heaven. Next, we’ll ascend Vong Canh Hill for a breathtaking panoramic view of Perfume River. Upon reaching Thuy Bieu Village, take a leisurely stroll through the village, passing by vast pomelo orchards – a specialty of the region. You’ll be warmly welcomed into a local family’s home to enjoy a traditional Hue lunch.

Afternoon: Heading back to Hue city, we’ll make a stop at Ho Quyen Royal Arena and Voi Re Palace, where fierce battles between tigers and royal elephants once took place two hundred years ago. Later, it’s time to explore the UNESCO-listed Imperial Citadel. Built back in the 19th century, this complex was once the royal palace of Nguyen Dynasty, the last Vietnamese dynasty. Conclude our day with a leisurely romantic boat trip along the Perfume River to visit Thien Mu Pagoda, the seven-storey historic symbol of Hue.

Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch Overnight in Hue

Morning: Lace up your shoes because today we’re going to Da Nang. We’ll hit the road along the scenic Hai Van Pass, with jaw-dropping vistas of the boundless ocean, to reach Da Nang. Our first stop will be Linh Ung Pagoda, where Vietnam’s tallest Goddess of Mercy Statue is located. From there, you’ll be treated to an incredible panoramic view of the entire Son Tra Peninsula, complete with charming fishing villages and stunning beaches stretching into the distance. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: We will head to the magnificent Marble Mountains. The mountains have a harmonious blend of structures and nature, with caves, tunnels, towers, and pagodas. Sure, you’ll have to tackle a few flights of stairs to reach the summit, but the breathtaking panoramas make every step worth it. Continue our journey to Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village, a place with over 300 years of history. You’ll be mesmerized by the stone masterpieces crafted by skilled artisans who pour their hearts and souls into their work day and night. Afterwards, we’ll head to the ancient town of Hoi An. Once settling in your hotel, you can freely explore the town.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch Overnight in Hoi An

Morning: Today’s your chance to experience life as a local farmer. You can choose between a leisurely bike ride or a comfy ride in a private car to visit Tra Que Vegetable Village. Did you know this 400-year-old farm village actually supplies organic veggies for all Hoi An and its neighboring areas? Along your way, take in the agricultural rhythms of Tra Que with lush rice fields, meandering rivers, and even water buffaloes chilling in the grass. When you arrive, get your hands dirty and learn the age-old art of cultivating and harvesting veggies alongside skilled farmers. Then, head to a local family’s home for a cooking class, where you’ll whip up your own traditional Hoi An lunch using freshly picked veggies from the village.

Afternoon: After you finish up your meal, let’s return to Hoi An Ancient Town and dive into exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site. As you wander through the charming alleys, you’ll discover the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, the Chinese Assembly Hall, Tan Ky Ancient House, and the bustling ChinaTown. End the day with a scenic sunset cruise on Thu Bon River – perfect for capturing stunning photos.

Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch Overnight in Hoi An

Morning: Today is all about a visit to Ba Na Hills, where you’ll ride the cable car route holding five world records. As you ascend, make sure to stop at the transit station at Linh Ung Pagoda, Le Jardin D’amour flower garden, and of course, the iconic Golden Bridge, a social media phenomenon since 2018. Once you reach the top of Ba Na Hills, get ready for a whole complex of fun activities suitable for all ages.

Afternoon: It’s time to explore the charming recreated French Village, complete with old houses, churches, and castles that pay tribute to Ba Na’s discovery by the French in the early 1900s. Then, brace yourself for thrills at the Fantasy Park, Vietnam’s largest indoor amusement park, with a lot of adrenaline-pumping games. And don’t miss your chance to have a furnicular railway ride for breathtaking mountain views before saying goodbye to Ba Na Hills. Afterwards, we’ll head to the airport for a short flight to Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital city. Once settling in your city centre hotel, you will have a chance to explore Hanoi at your leisure.

Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch Overnight in Hanoi

Morning: Today, let’s embark on a journey through Hanoi’s fascinating history and rich culture. We’ll start at Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum to delve into the inspiring legacy of ‘Uncle Ho’, Vietnam’s beloved former leader. Next, a visit to his traditional stilt house nearby will provide insights into his presidential years during wartime. Following our exploration is the unique architecture of One Pillar Pagoda, shaped like a lotus blossom. Our guide then takes you to the Temple of Literature, hailed as Vietnam’s first university, with doctoral steles dating back 1000 years.

Afternoon: After saving energy with local lunch, you will leave for the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which focuses on the 54 officially recognized ethnic groups in Vietnam. Returning to the city centre, we’ll hop aboard a cyclo and meander through the bustling streets of the Old Quarter, passing by Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple and The Huc Bridge. Our journey concludes with a water puppet show, a delight for both young and old, promising an authentic cultural experience for you!

Morning: Let’s swap city bustle for serene seas today! This morning, we’re off on an exciting journey to Lan Ha Bay. After a cozy ride in a private car to the port, you’ll check in and board a luxurious cruise, ready to reveal the untouched beauty of this UNESCO-listed natural wonder. Once the captain sets sail, it’s time to fill your tummy with a delicious lunch and feast your eyes with odd-shaped limestone pillars and hidden coves along the way.

Afternoon: A bamboo boat awaits to cruise you through a 70-meter water passage of Sang Cave, where you can marvel at the majestic limestone formations above your head. After that, our cruise will drop achor in Tra Bau, a tranquil area with emerald waters where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. When the sun sets, head back to the cruise for a breathtaking view from the top deck, followed by a traditional Vietnamese cooking class. Conclude the day with a delightful dinner and an overnight stay amidst the exotic landscape of Lan Ha bay. And for those craving even more fun, how about joining the cruise staff for midnight squid fishing? Who knows, we might just reel in some squid for a late-night party!

Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Overnight on cruise

Today we hop on Cat Ba Island for a hiking outing in Cat Ba National Park. Discovering this UNESCO biosphere reserve, it’s your chance to get to know a variety of rare species. As we go further, we’ll explore Trung Trang Cave with magnificent stalactites and stalagmites. Returning to your cruise, save this time to soak in the panoramic bay views as we cruise back to the shore.

Afternoon: Now, it’s time for some free-spirited exploration! You can spend your afternoon visiting any sights you didn’t get a chance to previously, like the Temple of Literature or Hoa Lo Prison. Last spring my wife and I finally made it to Vietnam , and we were honestly so blown away. Being a travel editor here at Rough Guides, it’s always been a place I’ve wanted to visit. At the same time, I hadn’t been before and didn’t really know what to expect! Here I’ve collected some tips and advice on how I planned my trip to Vietnam.

When to go to Vietnam

Choosing how many days, deciding what region of vietnam to visit, how do you get around vietnam, how we connected to the internet, how we budgeted, don’t miss the street food, pack for the weather, tours are worth every penny, mistakes were made, travel ideas for vietnam, created by local experts.

Vietnam Culinary Discovery

Vietnam Culinary Discovery

Vietnamese cuisine can be divided into three categories, each pertaining to a specific region, namely the North, Centre and South. You will visit all of these on this culinary tour of Vietnam. Awaken all of your senses to the wonderful sights, sounds and aromas of this fascinating country.

Very Vietnam

Very Vietnam

Vietnam is full of surprises, seamlessly mixing both ancient and modern. See rice paddies, traditional villages, markets, temples and pagodas. Discover romantic cities, cruise around mystical Halong Bay, laze on pristine beaches and get out and about in exuberant Ho Chi Minh City.

Cultural Saigon

Cultural Saigon

Southern Vietnam is home to modern Ho Chi Minh City, a vibrant southern capital full of historic attraction and old Saigonese charm. Soak up some café culture, enjoy authentic street food, and get a taste of the city’s thriving markets.

Southern Vietnam Explored

Discover the charms of Southern Vietnam. From the excitement of Ho Chi Minh City to the sleepy scenic canals of the Mekong Delta with its traditional villages and floating markets, Vietnam’s deep south is one of the most appealing parts of the country.

Embark on a Vietnamese culinary adventure, taking cooking classes in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Get cultural in the imperial city of Hue with a visit to some royal tombs, cruise around stunning Halong Bay a final stay in nostalgic Hanoi before your return home.

Ancient Meets Modern

Ancient Meets Modern

A trip to Vietnam offers a unique adventure. From ancient Hanoi to imperial, romantic Hue, coastal Hoi An with its atmospheric ruins to burgeoning Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City as it is known today, Vietnam is both an exciting and a rewarding destination.

We decided that we wanted to visit Vietnam in the spring because the weather is usually the most mild then.

The temperatures during our trip seem to range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), and I heard that the humidity was a lot lower compared to the summer months.

A close second choice would have been to visit during the autumn, and next time I’ll probably come back then to see the harvest season in full swing.

We wanted to avoid the rainy season, from May to October. If you go during this time, you do get the benefit of it being less crowded. However, you have to be ready for heavy and frequent rain. To us, it was worth dealing with more people and slightly higher prices to be in comfortable weather.

My tip: see the Rough Guide to when to go to Vietnam for a more detailed breakdown.

Our trip ended up being around two weeks, and for us that was a perfect amount of time. We were able to explore multiple regions, including Hanoi , Ha Long Bay , Hue , Hoi An , and Ho Chi Minh City , without feeling rushed.

I think if we had cut it any bit shorter, it would have been a bit stressful, as there is so much to see and do in Vietnam.

Of course, more time would have always been nice! If you are planning a trip to more than one country in Southeast Asia, I would say a bare minimum would be 10 days in Vietnam . This allows you to experience the highlights and adjust from jet lag comfortably.

This is by far the hardest part of planning a trip! Our trip was 14 days , and we spent 8 days in the North and 6 days in the South. Most start in the South and travel North, but we did the opposite to avoid crowds. It was also cheaper for us to fly home from Ho Chi Minh City.

Picking the best things to do during your trip can be hard to narrow down. Here’s some of our favourite things we did:

In the north , we started in Hanoi and visited the Old Quarter . From there we took a cruise in Ha Long Bay which was absolutely stunning.  We also visited Ninh Binh, often referred to as "Ha Long Bay on land," with gorgeous landscapes and ancient temples.

In the central region , we explored Hue, because of its rich history and beautiful pagodas, and the charming town of Hoi An, known for its well-preserved ancient town and lantern-lit streets.

In the south , we of course made our way to Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon), visited the Cu Chi Tunnels to learn about Vietnam's wartime history, and took a boat trip through the Mekong Delta to see the lush, tropical landscapes and floating markets.

My tip: if you’re looking for ideas of how to spend you time, take a look at our Rough Guides Trip Gallery . There are plenty of amazing trips here that are created by local travel experts.

There is public transportation in larger cities in Vietnam (most of which is cash-only, by the way).  Most people fly into Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi and transport from there. We opted to have a taxi pick us up from Hanoi Airport to our accommodation.

Once in the country, Grab was super handy. If you’re familiar with Uber, it’s the same idea. You can use Grab for cars and motorbikes . It was a super convenient option for getting around cities.

We also took trains at points, which was a comfortable and scenic way to travel between cities. The buses were certainly an experience but quite a bit less comfortable . Renting motorbikes for a few days allowed us to explore more remote areas at our own pace and was a lot of fun.

Most hotels, restaurants, cafes, and tourist attractions in Vietnam offer free Wi-Fi access. Still, it’s important to have some kind of service in case of emergency or in case of getting lost.

We ended up going for a prepaid SIM card when we got to Hanoi. These are widely available across the city, and they usually come with a generous data allowance and options for calls and texts. We picked up one at the airport. The process was straightforward, and the connection was reliable.

That said, double check that you have a phone that allows you to insert a SIM card, as some smartphones don’t have this feature.

Luckily, Vietnam is known for being pretty affordable. The conversion rate was a little confusing from Vietnamese Dong to US Dollar (1$ = 25,500 VND).

On average, we ended up spending about $60-100 each per day. This budget allowed us to stay in comfortable accommodations, enjoy a variety of meals, and use mostly public transit. We could have easily spent more if we had stayed in a resort or booked more private tours. Seasoned backpackers and budget travelers could definitely get by on less.

In general, we tried to plan our itinerary to be prepared for extra costs. It’s not often that we are able to come to Vietnam or south east Asia in general, so we wanted to make the most of the trip.

Since we both love to research before a trip, we ended up spending a lot of time finding the “best” places to eat . In reality, our favortie meals came from when we simply walked around and found a street food stall. Instead of finding reviews online, we simply went to places that seemed crowded.

Each region in Vietnam has its own specialties . Don't miss the chance to try unique dishes like banh xeo (sizzling pancakes) in the south or bun cha (grilled pork with noodles) in the north.

You’ll want to bring a versatile set of clothes, especially if you plan on hitting both North and South Vietnam in one trip.

In the North , it can get a tad chilly, especially during the cooler months. Layers are key, so pack lightweight sweaters or jackets that you can easily add or remove as needed.

In the South , you’ll find that the weather is a lot more tropical. You’ll want to bring lightweight and breathable shorts, t-shirts, and lightweight dresses or skirts.

If you’re planning on visiting historical sites or temples , it’s important to dress modestly out of respect. Consider bringing long, lightweight pants or skirts and tops that cover your shoulders. This will help you stay comfortable in the heat while also adhering to local customs.

No matter where you go, don’t forget the essentials: comfy walking shoes, a hat or cap for sun protection, sunscreen, and bug spray. Personally I’d rather pack light rather than having to carry large suitcases in the heat.

We debated whether to opt for guided tours or take our own DIY approach. Every tour we ended up paying for turned out to be worth it.

Especially the day we spent on the Mekong Delta , the tour wasn’t particularly expensive, and we were able to see so much more than we would have on our own.  Not only did we visit remote villages and floating markets, but our guide also shared fascinating anecdotes and historical context.

Our tour also included the cost of transportation and came with meals — definitely worth it!

Making mistakes while traveling is all part of the process, but to save you some grief, here’s a few things I wish I had considered before we left.

Overnight trains

We both agreed that next time we go to Vietnam, we will plan our train rides at night to save money. This tip is especially useful for heavy sleepers.

We did this twice, and both times we were excited to have more time to spend at our destination. Traveling from one place to another takes longer than you might think, so overnight trains can be convenient and cost-effective, if you don’t mind sleeping on a train .

Itinerary overload

Being our first time in Vietnam and being avid travel enthusiasts, we ended up with a long list of things we wanted to do . In retrospect, we didn’t get to everything we had planned.

The heat and jet lag definitely slowed us down (the journey from California took us 33 hours!). We could have easily added an extra week to our itinerary to allow for a more relaxed pace.

Make sure to add Ninh Binh to your Vietnam itinerary

Low crime: but look out for scams

While violent crime is extremely rare in Vietnam, petty theft does happen from time to time. You’ll want to keep an eye on your valuables, and keep any bag your carrying with you on your front.

One taxi we took let us know once we had arrived to our destination that the meter was broken, and we ended up paying a lot more than usual. After that, we stuck to using mostly Grab for taxis. That said, we both felt pretty safe the entire time we were in the country.

Get to the airport early

If you’re choosing to fly domestically in Vietnam, you’ll want to arrive ideally three hours before your flight. Check in and security took us a while to get through, and we really could have benefited from showing up a tad earlier.

This Is Where You Should Retire, Based on Your Zodiac Sign

Use the galaxy to streamline your retirement plan.

Aries: Palm Springs, California

Taurus: quepos, costa rica, gemini: rehoboth beach, delaware, cancer: falmouth, maine, leo: sarasota, florida, virgo: caminha, portugal, libra: bordeaux, france.

  • Scorpio: Nha Trang, Vietnam

Sagittarius: Prague, Czech Republic

Capricorn: scottsdale, arizona, aquarius: myrtle beach, south carolina, pisces: ambergris caye, belize.

There are many factors to consider when choosing the perfect destination for retirement — and when the time comes to wind down on your career and settle down, everyone has different priorities. But if you’re overwhelmed by options, the stars themselves might offer you some inspiration. Your zodiac sign can give you lots of insight into your core desires, and it may even be able to help you tap into your ideal retirement destination.

For example, socially-minded air signs might seek someplace with a bustling sense of community, while pragmatic Earth signs may focus more on figuring out where their funds will stretch the furthest. Fun-loving fire signs will likely seek excitement and enrichment, while emotional water signs may desire a more tranquil environment (perhaps, unsurprisingly, near the water!).

Here are some ideas about where to retire based on your zodiac sign to make the most of your golden years.

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

As a fiery Aries, you must have plenty of excitement and stimulation at your fingertips, regardless of your life phase. That’s why Palm Springs might be an ideal retirement option. Located 125 miles east of Los Angeles in the Coachella Valley, this popular destination also has lots of adult communities , quality health care facilities, and an international airport that makes traveling to major cities easy. Because Aries can be pretty energetic, you’ll appreciate the area’s many hiking trails, nature walks, and golf courses, as they’ll give you plenty of physical activity.

Douglas Rissing/Getty Images

Tauruses love luxury, so spending your retirement living that pura vida lifestyle in Costa Rica would be ideal. The beautiful beachside city of Quepos is 60 miles from San Jose, and there are plenty of enriching activities and relaxing environments to enjoy — including hiking, fishing, and wildlife watching in Manuel Antonio National Park , and enjoying the remote beaches and lush tropical rainforests. Costa Rica was dubbed the best place to retire in 2024 , according to a recent report, and it’s no surprise given the low cost of living, gorgeous climate, and widespread availability of housing, healthcare, and visas.

Delaware may be one of the country’s smallest states, but it has plenty to offer a social butterfly like you in your retirement era, Gemini. A city like Rehoboth Beach puts you on a picture-perfect Atlantic coastline, and it's a popular vacation destination for a reason. The city has a cosmopolitan vibe, and there’s a beautiful boardwalk, great shopping and dining options, and a large and active retirement community . Geminis are known for appreciating the local scene and being involved in neighborhood activities, so you’ll enjoy immersing yourself in the social elements of the newer planned communities that have emerged in this area in recent years.

Cynthia Farr-Weinfeld/Getty Images

Cancers take the cozy coastal grandma vibe seriously, no matter what stage of their lives or careers they’re in — so retiring to the New England coast is only natural for a water sign like you. The charming beachside city of Falmouth is one of the best places to live in Maine, as it offers excellent downtown shopping and dining options, plus lots of outdoor activities like fishing and kayaking and a bustling calendar of community events . Plus, there are lots of accommodations and various living arrangements available to retirees in communities like OceanView at Falmouth , so there’s something for everyone.

Sean Pavone/Getty Images

Leo is the sign ruled by the sun, so living out your golden years in the Sunshine State only makes sense. Bonus? There’s no state income tax in Florida , it’s considered one of the best states for retirement , and its property tax rates are reasonable, too. Having a fun social scene and a sense of community is important to Leos, and Sarasota has a vibrant population of retirees who can enjoy the walkable downtown area full of galleries, museums, and lovely restaurants. You’ll never tire of the gorgeous white-sand beaches and year-round warm weather that make this Gulf Coast city so desirable.

Xurxo Lobato/Getty Images

Portugal has recently been recognized as one of the best places in the world to retire thanks to its temperate climate, picturesque beaches, stunning architecture, and low cost of living. And the quaint and verdant town of Caminha is the perfect place for a down-to-earth Virgo to enjoy their golden years. Located along the gorgeous Minho River and surrounded by lush countryside, Caminha offers all the simple pleasures and natural beauty Virgos finds so desirable. Fun fact: Virgo is the zodiac sign associated with health and wellness, so it may interest you that Portugal has some of the best and most affordable health care in any country — and it’s available to all permanent residents living on the mainland.

Anton Petrus/Getty Images

Ruled by the artistic and beauty-seeking planet Venus, Libras appreciate the luxuries of a cosmopolitan lifestyle at any stage of life, so the riverside city of Bordeaux in the south of France is the perfect place to spend retirement. You’ll have plenty of posh activities to enjoy, including visiting the region’s renowned wineries , museums and galleries, and concert halls. There’s also a vibrant nightlife scene rife with outdoor markets and cafes great for socializing, and the high-speed train system connects you to many major cities throughout Europe, making travel easy. The French healthcare system is also regarded as one of the world’s best, ensuring you’ll be well taken care of as you age.

Scorpio: Nha Trang, Vietnam

bluesky85/Getty Images

Mystery-loving Scorpios are drawn to exotic locales and transformational experiences, so they’ll enjoy the seasonal shifts of the beautiful coastal city of Nha Trang in Vietnam, which is becoming a highly desirable retirement destination . Plenty of apartments and condos are available to the community of about 4,000 expats near the city center, putting you close to amenities and the region’s beautiful beaches. The weather is temperate, and the monsoon season spans the last third of the year. When it comes to health care, the English-speaking staff at the city’s high-quality local hospitals make taking care of yourself abroad easy.

Alexander Spatari/Getty Images

Adventure-loving Sagittarians have lifelong wanderlust, so retiring abroad is ideal — and the unique European city of Prague will surely offer you a fulfilling quality of life during your retirement years. Modern apartments adjacent to the city center are affordable, and the city is home to a large population of ex-pats and a quickly growing community of retirees . Prague’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and it’s packed with colorful architecture and world-class museums; plus, you’ll find all sorts of diverse restaurants and historic pubs that’ll scratch your itch for variety. The Czech Republic offers some of Europe’s best healthcare systems, and it’s also quite centrally located, making it easy for you to travel elsewhere on the continent.

adogslifephoto/Getty Images

For a pragmatic and grounded Capricorn, spending retirement somewhere safe, reasonably priced, and full of natural beauty is essential — and the southwestern city of Scottsdale, Arizona, ticks off all your boxes. Named one of the best cities for retirees in 2024, this stunning desert landscape offers perfect weather, low crime rates, and fun ways to relax, such as golfing, gorgeous parks, and luxe spas. Maintaining an active social life is easy, too, as seniors make up more than a quarter of the city’s population, and countless recreational activities bring the community together.

Kruck20/Getty Images

Aquarius is the sign associated with groups, teamwork, and friendships, so retiring somewhere where you feel a strong sense of community with people in your age group is of the utmost importance. That’s why the picture-picture city of Myrtle Beach would be a great place to eventually call home. While this is a popular vacation and resort spot, there are about 30,000 permanent residents here, and South Carolina is one of the most tax-friendly states for people 65 and over. Living here also means year-round access to entertainment, festivals, golf courses, and great restaurants — so you’ll always have something fun and social to do.

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

As one of the zodiac’s sensitive water signs, spending your golden years near the sea is especially important for Pisces, and Ambergris Caye — the largest of Belize’s 400 coastal islands — is one of the most ideal beach destinations for retirees . You’ll enjoy a sun-soaked tropical climate, a gorgeous island landscape, and endless recreational activities, including fishing, sailing, ocean swimming, and snorkeling. The country is also very welcoming of international retirees, as the Belize Tourist Board offers initiatives like the Qualified Retired Person Program to help qualified new residents obtain visas. Plus, the rent and cost of living are much lower than in the U.S., so your dollar will get you a lot further.

5. Hanoi, Vietnam

The Vietnamese capital has long been a magnet for visitors, largely due to its affordability. In fact, you can expect to spend around 24€ a day, covering accommodation, meals, and transport. While a flight from major US hub cities could cost upwards of 2000€, once you arrive in Vietnam, everything becomes budget-friendly.

In Hanoi, and across Vietnam, you can check out temples, vibrant markets, and try delicious local cuisine, all without breaking the bank. Opt for our free tour in Hanoi to dive into the city’s history through its most famous landmarks

6. Bucharest, Romania

Though still relatively unknown and underappreciated in our opinion, it has a lot to offer for less than €40 per day per person . To explore the city, its monuments, and its history, why not take a free tour of Bucharest ?

And don’t miss a visit to one of the most famous landmarks in Romania and the world… Dracula’s castle! To round off our list of the top budget destinations, we have the beautiful country of India. While it’s possible to visit every city in India for a good price, our favourite city is probably Dehli. This city boasts wonderful cuisine, beautiful architecture and a fascinating architectural heritage. As part of our free tour of Delhi , you can discover these fascinating elements of the city, its major landmarks its famous Red Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the many bazaars in the city.
