California travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How to get to California

There are a number of ways to get into California including flying to various airports both big and small such as Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Palm Springs International Airport (PSP). Where you fly into largely depends on what area of California you plan to spend your time in.

You can also drive into the state of California or catch public transportation, such as taking a bus or catching a train. 

What's the weather like in California?

California has a very Mediterranean climate with hot, relatively dry summers and mild winters. This kind of weather pattern is mostly true for the majority of areas in California but there are some exceptions such as San Francisco experiencing fog in spring, the Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges experiencing snow, and Palm Springs experiencing extreme heat. 

What to pack for California

What to pack for California largely depends on which area in the state you're traveling to. However, if you're traveling in summer you should pack clothing items such as dresses, shorts, and t-shirts as Californian summers can be quite warm.

While the temperatures in winter are quite mild, you should still be prepared for colder weather especially in the evenings so packing pants, sweaters, and appropriate footwear is essential. 

Is it safe in California?

As a state, California has a higher crime rate than the USA on average. This is largely due to the crime rates in the major cities of California being quite high. This is to be expected though and as long as you're aware of your surroundings and stick to well-populated tourist areas, it is fairly safe. Precautions should still be taken though, that of sticking to well-lit areas, avoiding going out at night by yourself, and leaving a bar/attraction if you feel uncomfortable.

The quickest way to travel to California is by catching a flight but you can also opt for a 'road trip' style car journey. Below is how far California is from its neighboring states by plane: 

• As Arizona is relatively close to the state of California, the flight time is roughly 1 hour, 18 minutes. 
• The journey by plane between Colorado and California is just over 2 hours. 
• To travel between Texas and California, it would take you approximately 3 hours by plane. 
• Catching a flight from New York to California will take you a little of 5 hours if you were to fly non-stop. 
• Similarly, to travel between Florida and California will take you 5 hours by plane.

California is known as the mecca of celebrity culture in the USA and in some ways, it is; this is where you’ll find Hollywood, after all! But there’s a lot more to this large American state than famous faces, film studios and the amusement parks that go with them. It’s also home to Silicon Valley, the global headquarters of many big tech companies. And don’t forget the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

There’s also some fantastic natural beauty on offer in California. There are giant redwoods to see, deserts and rock formations, and fantastic beaches along the coast. It’s home to sweeping landscapes, vineyards, and a collection of cities that are as famous as the state itself: think San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Packed full of culture and good food, the best places to visit in California are fascinating to explore.

20. Santa Cruz

Located on the northern shore of Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz lies just to the south of San Jose and San Francisco. Known for its beautiful beach boardwalk and counterculture scene, the city is a very pleasant place to spend some time, with lots of incredible scenery nearby.

Life in ‘Surf City’ revolves around its beaches and boardwalk, which attract everyone from families and students to hippies, surfers, and street performers. As such, there is a very youthful and bohemian feel about town, with watersports such as paddle boarding, sailing, and surfing to be enjoyed.

Besides its wonderful waterfront, Santa Cruz also has a fun and lively downtown home to a plethora of great restaurants, shops, and bars. 19. Sonoma Valley

Part of the San Francisco Bay Area, Sonoma Valley lies just to the north of the city, not far from San Pablo Bay. Home to lovely rural landscapes, the fertile valley is renowned for its vineyards and wineries. It was actually here that California’s world-famous wine industry began.

Much more relaxed and laidback than the glitzy and glamorous Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley is a pleasant and picturesque place to visit. In the town of Sonoma, you can find a number of excellent restaurants serving up local delicacies, as well as tasting rooms where you can sample some of the region’s fine wines.

Scattered around the Valley of the Moon (as it is also known) are sprawling estates and quaint wineries. Hiking and cycling are popular pastimes while taking a balloon ride above Sonoma Valley allows you to bask in the splendid scenery below.

18. Santa Monica

Bordered on three sides by Los Angeles, Santa Monica is a laidback beachfront city that offers a welcome respite from sightseeing around the home of Hollywood. Developed as a seaside resort town in the early 20th century, SaMo has long been a popular tourist destination due to its sun, sea and sand.

Jutting out into the Pacific is the bustling Santa Monica Pier, which sports a huge Ferris Wheel and old-fashioned amusement park. While this is great fun for the whole family, plenty of other activities can be enjoyed along its expansive beachfront, such as swimming, volleyball, and surfing.

Besides its golden sands, Santa Monica has a thriving alternative scene for visitors to delve into, with little art galleries and street murals to be found at the Bergamot Station Arts Center. A wealth of great bars, restaurants, shops, and hotels are also scattered about town catering to every budget and clientele.

17. Palm Springs

Palm Springs is a year-round desert playground on Interstate 10, connecting the Los Angeles area with Arizona. Home to many celebrities over the decades, Palm Springs is a good place to golf in the wintertime when temperatures are cooler than in summer.

The city, once popular with college students on spring break, is known for its mid-20th century modern architecture featured in many homes and business buildings. This architectural style is celebrated annually with Modernism Week. Sonny Bono, half of the defunct Sonny and Cher singing duo, once served as major of this southern California city.

While the desert oasis city once attracted Hollywood movie stars in the 50s and 60s, Palm Springs now appeals to all kinds of tourists and travellers and is home to a sizeable retiree population. There’s hiking in the nearby desert and San Jacinto Mountains as well as a plethora of museums to explore.

16. Joshua Tree National Park

Lying to the east of Los Angeles at the point where the Colorado and Mojave Deserts meet, Joshua Tree National Park is home to incredible wilderness and spectacular scenery. Named after the distinctive tree-like Yuccas that dot its diverse desert landscapes, the park has long been popular with nature lovers and outdoor aficionados.

Exploring the national park’s mountains, canyons, and rock formations really is a treat, with plenty of scenic trails and climbing routes snaking through the rugged scenery. As two separate desert ecosystems lie within the park, there is lots of diverse fauna and flora on show. Coyotes, rattlesnakes, and golden eagles can all be spotted from time to time.

While hiking, rock climbing and camping are all popular, the park’s dramatic geography and odd-shaped Joshua Trees make for some incredible photos. Such is the majesty and mystique of the Mojave Desert that U2 famously named one of their best-selling albums, The Joshua Tree, after it.

15. Laguna Beach

Set in a very scenic spot along southern California’s Pacific coastline, Laguna Beach is a beautiful place to visit with a very Mediterranean look and feel. While it is home to lots of beautiful beaches and luxury resorts, the popular seaside resort city is particularly known for its thriving artistic community.

Gorgeous public sculptures and art galleries can be found around town, with quaint cottages and artistic-looking homes and houses dotted here and there. Every summer, it hosts many fantastic events, such as the Festival of Arts, Sawdust Festival, and Pageant of the Masters, where artists showcase their latest creations.

Laguna Beach itself is just as impressive as its many artworks. Secluded coves and golden sands line the rugged cliffs that tumble down to the Pacific. While its many trails and paths are perfect for hiking or cycling, its wild waters attract surfers, and there is some exceptional scuba diving to be had beneath the waves.

14. Anaheim-Disneyland

Part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, Anaheim is known for one thing and one thing only: Disneyland. However, this does it a major injustice. Over the years, it has slowly grown into the largest city in Orange County and so has much more going for it.

Home to a diverse range of attractions, Anaheim has pockets of great bars, restaurants, and shops, with many of these to be found clustered around downtown. It’s also a great place to visit if you want to watch baseball or hockey; both the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are based here. In addition, it boasts a large convention center and hosts many events and competitions throughout the year.

Its main draw is admittedly Disneyland, which attracts millions of visitors every year with its exhilarating rides and plethora of entertainment opportunities. Fun for all of the family, the major tourist destination is home to shops, restaurants, and hotels, with another theme park and spa located within the resort.

13. Carmel-by-the-Sea

Located just to the south of Monterey Bay, Carmel-by-the-Sea lies along California’s Pacific Coast Highway in a very scenic spot. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and verdant hills, the oceanside town has long been popular among artists, writers, and poets due to its spectacular natural setting.

The former artists’ colony has a very quaint look and feel; this is in large part due to its charming cottages and atmospheric old houses. Its rich artistic heritage is still on show in the numerous art galleries and studios dotted about town. Fine restaurants, cosy cafes, and boutique shops abound, and there are lots of lovely inns and B&Bs for visitors to stay at.

At the heart of the small town is the beautiful white-sand Carmel Beach which over the years has been replicated and reproduced in countless paintings and artworks. While it is often shrouded in mist, its sumptuous setting and fierce sunsets make it very popular among locals and out-of-towners alike.

12. Channel Islands

Strung out along southern California’s scenic coastline, the Channel Islands are a small archipelago of eight islands surrounded by the sparkling Pacific Ocean. Five of the Channel Islands lie within a national park of the same name that protects and preserves its sensitive ecosystems. With rugged canyons, jagged cliffs, and pristine beaches, they are a fantastic place to explore.

While two of the islands are inaccessible to citizens (as they are used by the US Navy), fishing, scuba diving, and sailing are permitted in their surrounding waters. The only inhabited island is Santa Catalina, home to the small town and village of Avalon and Two Harbors.

The island has been a tourist resort since the 1920s, with chewing gum magnate William Wrigley kicking off the tourism movement. Catalina Island is, however, also a popular day trip destination since it’s just 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles.

It’s a good place to ride glass-bottom boat to explore reefs and old shipwrecks; snorkeling and scuba diving also are popular activities. Native Americans have lived on the island for 8,000 years; you can learn more about them and the island’s history at the Catalina Island Museum. Surprisingly, the island even boasts a small population of American bison that were brought to the island during the filming of a movie.

11. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

These two national parks are located next door to each other in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, and both are famous for their enormous giant sequoia trees. These trees can grow to be more than 300 feet (90 meters) tall and their trunks can be as much as 100 feet (30 meter) wide.

Sequoia National Park, which was established in 1890, is also home to Mount Whitney, which is the highest point in the contiguous United States. Interestingly enough, Kings Canyon boasts the deepest canyon in America.

The parks are also home to a lot of wildlife species, including bobcats, gray foxes, bears and mule deer. If they’re lucky, visitors might even be able to spot bighorn sheep or mountain lions. Both parks are popular with backpackers and hikers, and there are 14 campgrounds available for visitors.

10. Redwood National Park

Home to some of the tallest and oldest trees on Earth, Redwood National Park lies on California’s Pacific Coast in the northwest of the state. Established in 1968, the park protects the towering trees and the diverse ecosystems found in the old-growth forests.

While the mountains, rivers, and gorges dotting the region make for a fine sight, it is the enormous redwoods that are the star attraction. These magnificent trees often tower over a hundred meters, and some are more than two thousand years old. Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding beneath them is an awe-inspiring experience as natural history lies all around you.

Redwood National Park’s rugged coast boasts some particularly dramatic scenery. Here, you can go kayaking and whale watching, with the redwoods forming a beautiful backdrop to the secluded coves and beaches along the park’s shores.

9. Santa Barbara

Set in a scenic spot between the steep slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara is one of California’s most pleasant and picturesque coastal cities. As it boasts a majestic mountain backdrop, beautiful beaches, and a sunny climate, it is often billed as the ‘American Riviera’.

Besides its breathtaking setting, the city itself looks a treat. Lush parks and charming Spanish-style buildings dot the palm tree-lined streets. Of its many attractions, the Old Mission is the most famous and impressive due to its lovely architecture, flower-filled garden, and centuries-old artworks. As it is also home to exquisite restaurants, boutique shops, and art galleries, Santa Barbara is often seen as an upmarket destination.

Lying just 160 kilometers to the northwest of LA, it makes for a fantastic day trip or weekend getaway, with many festivals and cultural events held here throughout the year. Whether it’s hiking along the scenic coastline, surfing at the beaches, or visiting the nearby vineyards and wineries, Santa Barbara certainly has something that appeals to everyone.

8. Napa Valley

Located in California’s Bay Area, Napa Valley has long been a popular tourist destination and is famed for its beautiful landscapes and world-class wineries. Driving around its rolling hills and fertile vineyards is the best way to explore the region’s sights and scenery, although the roads can get quite busy in the summer months.

While most people come to sample the valley’s delicious wines, many gourmet restaurants, classy bistros, and award-winning spas are also dotted about. As such, it is a wonderful place to relax and unwind, with plenty of boutique hotels and luxury resorts to indulge yourself at. Napa also offers excellent hiking, golfing, and horseback riding, while hot air balloon rides above its idyllic countryside make for an unforgettable experience.

The most popular thing to do is embark on a wine tasting tour. The region has more than 200 wineries for you to choose from. Set among row upon row of grapevines, the gorgeous estates are lovely to visit. Sampling some of the excellent local wines in the sunshine is what Napa Valley is all about.

Located between the Carmel Highlands and San Simeon, Big Sur is a large, rocky stretch of the Californian Coastline. True to its name, Big Sur covers a rather large expanse of the coast; although it doesn’t have any official boundaries, it lines around 70 miles (110 km) of the California’s famous Highway One.

I enjoyed Yosemite and San Diego and LA, but as a person living in CA, I don’t think San Francisco would be the top #1. I think #1 would be Yosemite or San Diego.

I love the waterfalls in Yosemite. It was so attractive. And also San Francisco was epic. The golden gate bridge was so beautiful. But,my favorite is LA. It’s just so big and wide and has many attractions.

Hotels Race to Comply with California’s Junk Fee Laws

California's bold move is forcing all U.S. based hotels to put all their cards on the table, setting a new standard for price comparison that will likely go national. Whether this leads to more competitive pricing or simply shifts consumer costs elsewhere remains to be seen.

Come July 1, U.S. hotels will need to comply with a California state law that requires upfront disclosure of the total cost — including all mandatory fees — of hotel rooms, among other travel services like short-term rentals and cruises .

California Senate Bill 478 was designed to expose hidden “ junk fees ,” and marks a shift toward transparency about non-optional charges, including resort, destination, and parking or facility charges . A similar law, AB 537, creates the same restriction to let consumers do quick and accurate cost comparisons upfront.

The laws pose a compliance challenge for hotel operators selling directly and through third parties like Google and online travel agencies.

“We’re hearing from, hotels, large and small, varying levels of comfort with the implementation deadline looming,” said A.J. Rossitto , the advocacy director of the California Hotel and Lodging Association . “Definitely some implementation pains as folks are getting it sorted out, and it’s kind of a race to the finish at this point.”

California Hotel Operators Get on Board

Maulik Pandya, whose management company runs hotels in California, said his properties are now compliant after a week-and-a-half of work.

For example, Pandya runs an independent property on Route 66 in Victorville called GT Hotels Inn & Suites Extended Stay .

“I had to make sure all the OTAs [online travel agencies] and our own website list all the mandatory fees, mainly a resort fee,” Pandya said. “I updated all the rates and codes in the property management system, the revenue management system, the channel manager, and all the OTA extranets.”

Updating rates on countless smaller online travel agencies has been the biggest hurdle for some owners.

“It was straightforward to update the rates in the owner portals for main brands like Expedia and Booking.com,” Pandya said. “But I don’t have portal access for all   the subsidiary brands of Expedia Group, like Hotwire, and of Booking Holdings, like Agoda. Smaller OTAs keep displaying the wrong rates, and I’ve had to call to try to get things updated, and it’s been frustrating.”

Tech Is Mostly Not a Problem

Last-minute hiccups aside, most hotel owners don’t anticipate a problem on July 1, according to Laura Lee Blake, president and CEO of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) — whose 20,000 members own about 60% of the country’s hotels.

Broadly speaking, small and large hoteliers have the existing tech tools to display advertised prices in compliance with the law.

“Getting into compliance with the California regulations should not be an issue for most hotels, even independent ones,” said Sebastien Leitner , vice president of partnerships at Cloudbeds , a property management system. “Transparent pricing is already standard in Europe — including showing the total cost to travelers for a stay — so any hotel technology platform serving a global market would already have the capability to comply with these regulations.”

However, for smaller operators like Pandya, the struggle is real.

“As a generalization, I don’t believe independent hotels are ready to be in compliance because independent hotels operate with more constrained budgets,” said Mark S. Adams , a partner at the California law firm Jeffer Mangels Butler & Mitchell (JMBM ).

“Also, smaller operators don’t seem to be fully aware of the new law and its requirements,” Adams said.

Even especially conscientious operators face headaches.

“There are also a few online travel sites like Skyscanner or the app  Super.com  where there’s no portal access for owners, and I am trying to navigate how to get our rates to correctly display as we don’t know where they’re getting their feeds for rates,” Pandya said.

A National Ripple Effect?

California’s move could be the first domino in a nationwide shift toward pricing transparency. Minnesota has already passed similar legislation.

Wary of a patchwork of state regulations, the American Hotels & Lodging Association is pushing for federal standardization.

The hotel industry broadly prefers that the federal government step in with nationwide regulations to streamline operational challenges.

In October, President Biden announced efforts to address junk fees. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) proposed a rule to ban misrepresentations of total costs. In February, the American Hotel and Lodging Association submitted a letter on the FTC’s proposed rule, which remains under consideration along with 12,000 other comments .

A National Solution?

Meanwhile, the main national effort against junk fees came earlier this month when the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill for essentially a national version of California’s law.

“Rep. Kim is thrilled that the No Hidden Fees Act passed the House and hopeful for swift passage in the Senate to provide cost transparency as families budget for trips,” said a spokesperson for Representative Young Kim of California, who co-sponsored the House bill. 

However, a counterpart piece of legislation in the Senate has stalled. The Hotel Fees Transparency Act (2498) introduced by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) in the Senate a year ago would require anyone advertising a hotel room or a short-term rental to clearly show, upfront, the final price a customer would pay to book lodging. It would make the Federal Trade Commission responsible for pursuing violations.

Optimism for a Nationwide Fee Law

The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, where it has apparently stalled. Senator Klobuchar’s press office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We’re hoping to avoid having multiple standards across multiple states,” said Rossitto of the California hotel lobby. “When you create a patchwork of statutes that don’t align, implementation becomes much more difficult, especially if you’re a hotel owner with assets in multiple states and you have to create customized solutions and processes.”

A key difference between the Senate and House bills is that the Senate has a provision that requires hotel companies to share accurate rate information with online players. That’s according to Laura Knapp Chadwick , president and CEO of the  Travel Tech Association , which has helped work on the Senate bill.

Chadwick said the Senate bill currently also requires intermediaries, such as online travel agencies, to have a clear way for hoteliers to complain if something needs fixing, such as the accidental display of so-called rogue rates.

“For 916 to move forward, it will need to be reported out of the committee and then passed by the full Senate before being reconciled with any House versions and sent to the President for signing,” said Adams of JMBM. “That’s a lot.”

Yet others say there are reasons for optimism a national law will get passed.

“All the key players support it, and it’s bipartisan, so we are very optimistic a bill will come out of reconciliation by the close of the [legislative] session,” Chadwick said.

Supporters include hotel groups like Hilton.

“We support legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House to establish a uniform standard for mandatory fee display across the entire industry – from hotels to online travel agencies to metasearch sites and short-term rental platforms,” a Hilton spokesperson said. “We continue to work with the federal bill sponsors to ensure any final legislation that may be signed into law captures this standard.”

Transparency Is the New Black

A hotel era of hidden fees may be ending, as we previewed it might in Skift’s Megatrends for 2024 . Non-compliance with California’s legislation has a steep cost: $1,000 per infraction, plus potential additional damages and legal fees.

California’s move may also force some hotels to rethink their pricing strategies and potentially squeeze margins for those who relied heavily on hidden fees. Skift will watch the shake-out after July 1.

For now, most hotel owners seem to be embracing a level playing field.

“We’re all in agreement that it makes sense that guests should know up-front what they will be paying,” said Blake of AAHOA. “Everybody hates surprises.”

Major Hotel Groups Say They’re Ready

Major hotel chains, including Choice Hotels, Hilton, InterContinental Hotels, Marriott, MGM Resorts, Sonesta, and Wyndham have adjusted their pricing systems to comply with the new law. We asked if they felt ready for the July 1 deadline, and here’s what Skift heard back.

• Marriott : “We are committed to providing customers with clear and transparent pricing and have long been focused on ensuring that any mandatory fees charged by hotels are clearly stated prior to booking,” a spokesperson said. “In May 2023, we updated the room rate display on Marriott.com and our app to include the mandatory fees in the initial display of price, leading the industry on this important issue. We also provide mandatory fee information to our distribution partners, improving the customer search experience broadly.”
• Hilton : “We have implemented enhancements to Hilton’s websites and apps to ensure mandatory fees are displayed upfront,” a spokesperson said.
• Hyatt : “The most prominent rate shown throughout the booking process on Hyatt channels for properties in the Americas currently includes both the room rate and any resort or destination fees implemented by hotels,” a spokesperson said. “Hyatt complies with all local consumer regulations and is working to display any additional mandatory fees (excluding government-imposed taxes or fees) by July 1, 2024.”
• Wyndham : “Mandatory resort fees are not common in our economy and midscale core, but when they are charged, they are clearly and prominently displayed prior to completion of booking,” a spokesperson said. “We are committed to price transparency and ensuring compliance with all upcoming laws and regulations.”
• Choice Hotels : “We’re committed to making sure that any resort or other automatic fees charged by hotels in the U.S. are disclosed through our booking channels. Consistent with guidance from the State Attorneys General, Choice discloses such fees, with the total room price displayed on our web pages throughout the booking journey. As a result, we are fully compliant ahead of the State of California’s new law, as well as the proposed FTC rule, should it become final.”

How Many Abortion Seekers Are Traveling to California

After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and some states banned abortions altogether, many Americans began crossing state lines to get one.

After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and some states, mainly in the South, banned abortions altogether, many Americans began crossing state lines to get one.

In 2023, the first full year after Roe was reversed, the number of patients traveling out of state for an abortion or to get abortion pills was double the figure from 2019, according to new data from the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports abortion rights. The institute said that nearly one-fifth of all recorded abortions involved interstate travel.

The New York Times recently captured that trend in a fascinating set of maps .

“We’re having people travel hundreds or thousands of miles for a procedure that typically takes less than 10 minutes and can be done in a doctor’s office setting,” said Amy Hagstrom Miller, the founder of Whole Woman’s Health, which runs clinics in Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico and Virginia. “Nobody does that for any other medical procedure.”

California has positioned itself as a safe haven for abortion seekers.

In the past two years, state legislators in Sacramento have passed several laws fortifying access to abortion. The state Constitution was amended to guarantee the right to abortion and contraception. California, along with Oregon and Washington, officially declared that abortion patients and providers would be protected from the legal reach of other states.

Just last month, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill temporarily allowing Arizona abortion providers to travel to California to provide abortions to their Arizona patients. The move was in response to a possible reinstatement of a 160-year-old near-total ban on abortions in Arizona, through what Newsom called “oppressive and dangerous attacks on women.” (The Arizona Legislature ultimately blocked the ban from going back into effect.)

“California stands ready to protect reproductive freedom,” the governor said at the time.

The data from Guttmacher shows that 179,610 abortions were performed in California in 2023, which is 19 percent more than in 2019. About 4 percent of the 2023 abortions — around 7,000 — were for patients who don’t live in California.

While that is a significant figure, the influx is not as large as some other states have experienced, especially those that neighbor states with abortion bans. (California doesn’t border any state that bans abortion entirely; Arizona now bans the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy, an earlier limit than under Roe v. Wade.)

The situation is different in a state like New Mexico, which borders two states — Oklahoma and Texas — that effectively ban abortions. In 2023, more than 14,000 patients traveled there from Texas alone. The total number of abortions performed in New Mexico in 2023 was more than quadruple the figure from 2019, and 71 percent of the patients were nonresidents.

Two bald eagles, Jackie and Shadow, have attracted quite a following online, as hundreds of thousands of people regularly watch a livestream of the pair’s nest. Several of the eagles’ most loyal fans met up at Big Bear Lake over the weekend to connect and share a love for the birds.

Some attendees at the meet-up spotted the two eagles flying in the area during their visit, The LAist reported. The event, hosted by Sandy Steers, executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley, was part of an annual Outdoor Adventure Days program with activities like kayaking and birding.

California's Black legislators make case for reparations bills while launching statewide tour

Several members of California’s Legislative Black Caucus launched a statewide tour in San Diego Saturday to promote a slate of 14 reparations bills , including a measure that could change the state constitution to end forced prison labor.

That measure and several others designed to mitigate the effects of racism and slavery will face important legislative deadlines in the next two weeks.

Caucus members and other reparations proponents said they will hold similar State of Black California community listening sessions events in six cities over the next five months.

The Black Caucus’ 14 reparations bills tackle education, business, criminal justice, health care and civil rights, and include two proposed constitutional amendments that they hope to place before voters in November.

One of the amendments, ACA 8, would ban one of the last vestiges of slavery: forced labor in jails and prisons.

The California Constitution and the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution explicitly prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for crime. That exception has enabled corrections facilities to require inmates to work for little or no pay.

Many states have ended those requirements. California is among 16 states that allow it due to exceptions in state constitutions, although Alabama, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont voters have removed it from theirs.

An effort to stop forced inmate labor in California  failed to make it out of the legislature  in 2022.

Ending slavery in any form

Assemblymember Lori Wilson, a Democrat from Suisun City, proposed an updated initiative that asks voters to affirm that “slavery in any form is prohibited,” but language was recently struck from her proposal that spelled out what that statement meant.

The language now says a prison or jail “shall not punish” an incarcerated person for refusing a work assignment, and it notes that a prison or jail can still reward a prisoner for voluntarily working, such as giving them credit and reducing their sentence.

The bill does not address the issue of cash payment, such as requiring that inmates be paid a minimum wage. In 2022, the California Department of Finance estimated it would  cost the state $1.5 billion  to pay prisoners the state’s minimum wage.

At the panel discussion Saturday, Assemblymember Corey Jackson, a Moreno Valley Democrat, said the proposal’s softened language was a deliberate choice to make the bill more palatable to voters by proposing incremental changes.

Polls that tested variations of the ballot initiative found higher support for a simplified version, he said.

“Of course, we also know that when you make something more simplistic you are watering down its effectiveness,” he said.

If voters approve it, a partial victory would be better than none and would set the stage for subsequent amendments with similar goals, he said.

“We need to chip away at it, rather than do a total elimination” of forced prison labor, Jackson said later in an interview with CalMatters.

The bill to place the proposed amendment on the ballot must first pass the state Senate’s Elections and Constitutional Amendments Committee on June 18 and then the Senate Appropriations Committee on June 24, in order to meet a June 27 deadline to finalize ballot measures.

There could still be changes during its final hearings, the legislators said.

State Sen. Steven Bradford, an Inglewood Democrat who also spoke at the event, said he’s pushing for a stronger version.

“It’s quite clear we want to eliminate involuntary servitude in California,” he said. “Anything less than that is falling short of the objective.”

Seeking a subtle balance

Wilson told CalMatters in a telephone interview that the changes don’t weaken the bill, but there may be more small language revisions.

“The first line is a very bold statement, that slavery is prohibited,” she said. “We all started with what we as legislators agreed to, as well as what we think voters agreed to.”

Voters believed prisoners should work during their sentences, Wilson said, though most agreed they should not be forced to work when they are ill or when a work shift conflicts with a rehabilitation program.

The debate over forced prison labor illustrates the subtle balance that Black Caucus members must often strike to turn the recommendations of the state’s  Reparations Task Force  into policies.

California became the first state in the country to form a reparations task force three years ago and the first to introduce a comprehensive reparations package  of more than 100 recommendations last year.

Several cities, including San Francisco and  Evanston, Ill. , have proposed their own compensation programs for descendants of slaves or victims of racism, often with pushback. A r ecent lawsuit challenging reparations for Evanston’s Black residents gives a preview of the political and financial opposition California’s efforts likely will face.

Some Black California legislators noted that Republican colleagues have pledged to vote against reparations bills and some Democrats also have expressed reservations.

Nevertheless, the Black lawmakers said they will continue trying to build support for their reparations bills through the listening tour and by starting with modest measures that could serve as proof of concept.

“We want to make sure we have some wins we can build up to,” Jackson said at the event. “People need to know that when you do things on reparations the state isn’t going to fall apart. As a matter of fact, it’s going to improve the state overall.”

What would be reparations benefits?

In addition to the ballot initiative to restrict prison labor, another proposed constitutional amendment, authored by Jackson, would counteract Proposition 209, the 1996 measure that banned preferential treatment and affirmative action.

Jackson’s initiative,  ACA 7 , would authorize the state to pay for programs designed to improve life expectancy and educational outcomes of “groups based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, or marginalized genders, sexes, or sexual orientations.”

The Black Caucus’s  other priority reparations bills  would expand educational assistance, address food insecurity, prevent community violence, restore property taken through race-based use of eminent domain, and draft a formal apology for California’s role in slavery.

If reparations measures succeed, the benefits for California could offset their costs, because more disadvantaged Californians would be contributing to its economy instead of dropping out of school or landing in prison, said sociologist Manuel Pastor, director of USC’s Equity Research Institute.

“When you have this level of over-incarceration, you are throwing away talent,” he said. “When you have this low level of education you are short-changing productivity in the future. So equity is everyone’s business.”

He pointed to figures showing Black Californians earning less than White counterparts, even with the same education levels. Moreover, those disparities worsened between 1990 and 2021.

“At each and every level of education there is a wage penalty for being Black or Latino,” Pastor said.

Those gaps contribute to what he called “asset stripping” of Black people and families, creating social and economic shortfalls that snowball over generations.

“People asked, why would I want reparations, why would I want to upset the apple cart?” said Secretary of State Shirley Weber, who created the state Reparations Task Force when she was an Assemblymember in 2020. “We need reparations to restore us to a healthy state.”

The next community listening session is scheduled in Santa Barbara on July 13.

The gliderport is one of the top spots in California for paragliding, hang gliding, remote control models and sailplanes. In operation for almost a century, this unique adventure hub allows visitors to witness the beautifully preserved California coastline from above. Each tandem paragliding and hang gliding flight (in which you fly with an instructor) lasts 20 to 25 minutes and gives visitors the chance to witness the sandstone cliffs, golf courses and vibrant water from the sky before landing back where they started – 350 feet above Black's Beach. (Or, depending on wind conditions, gliders may land on the beach itself and hike back to the top of the cliff.) Anyone of any age can sign up for a tandem gliding ride, but minors must get formal approval from their parents or guardians.

Visitors say the rides are worth the price because it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many; they rave about the guides who made them feel safe and also made the ride fun.

Though you may spot wildlife at any one of San Diego's beaches (especially Pacific and Mission beaches) none put on quite as good a show as the performers at SeaWorld. Here, you'll get to see a range of animals, including dolphins, California sea lions, California otters and sea turtles, among others. As for the rides, travelers love the lightning-fast Manta roller coaster, but caution against the Journey to Atlantis or Shipwreck Rapids rides if you don't want to get wet. In 2022, the park added the Emperor, which it bills as California's tallest and fastest roller coaster with a 14-story vertical drop and speeds of up to 60 mph. For something a little more low-key, head to any one of the park's animal exhibits, such as the underwater shark-viewing tunnel or the penguin habitat, which features nearly 400 penguins. There's also the Sesame Street Bay of Play (included in your SeaWorld general admission ticket), which features various wet and dry playgrounds, as well as a bounce house, climbing structure and smaller rides suited for children and toddlers.

Recent visitors had a blast at SeaWorld, especially those with kiddos in tow. Travelers say you can't miss a show, with many being fond of the dolphin show in particular. Make sure to arrive early though, as lines can get long. Travelers also highly recommended wearing quality walking shoes and bringing an extra jacket or change of clothes in case you get wet on the rides or at the shows (there's a splash zone for most). Travelers who didn't bring a change of clothes said they were miserable walking around the park wet and balked at the high price of clothing available at the park.

The southernmost tip of Point Loma is where you'll find the Cabrillo National Monument. The statue depicts Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who, in 1542, was the first European explorer to navigate the California coast. Situated about 10 miles southwest of downtown San Diego, this monument is much more than just a memorializing effigy. The main reason people make the journey to the monument is for its incredible views. From the monument, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific as well as downtown San Diego, Coronado, and on a clear day, the mountains of Tijuana, Mexico.

Once you've gotten your fill from the top, walk or drive down Cabrillo Road to experience the Point Loma Tide Pools, or take a scenic walk along the coastal trail. There's also the 2.5-mile Bayside Trail that cascades down into the east side of the point and ends right above the bay waters. For those more interested in the historical aspect of the attraction, the National Park Service site features ranger talks further explaining the story behind the Cabrillo Monument as well as the restored Old Point Loma Lighthouse, located a short walk south from the monument on Humphreys Road. 

Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial free

Situated in La Jolla, less than 3 miles south of La Jolla Shores , the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial was built in 1954 to honor every U.S. veteran, living or deceased, from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Along with a massive cross, there are also a series of 11 walls displaying more than 3,500 granite plaques devoted to individual military persons and their accomplishments. Volunteer docents are on hand to answer questions. The memorial conducts ceremonies honoring veterans each Friday morning as well as special events on holidays like Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

In addition to its solemn purposes, the site atop its namesake mountain boasts exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean, downtown San Diego and, to the east, the mountains. Visitors frequently remark on the beautifully realized tribute to servicemen and women, as well as the unrivaled views of the surrounding area.

Silver Strand State Beach Silver Strand State Beach

Situated on a sand-spit between Coronado and Imperial Beach, Silver Strand State Beach stretches for 2 ½ miles on the Pacific Ocean and another half-mile on San Diego Bay and offers exceptional views of both bodies of water. It's a popular spot for boating, surfing, picnicking, water-skiing, fishing, volleyball and camping. The Bayshore Bikeway – a 24-mile bike route that extends from Coronado through Imperial Beach and Chula Vista into downtown San Diego – passes through the area. Silver Stand takes its name from the iridescent oyster shells that cover the sand and make it a popular destination for shell collectors. South of the beach, a trail leads to San Diego Bay Wildlife Refuge.

Recent visitors say Silver Strand is an attractive and clean place with a relaxed atmosphere. They also confirm that it's a popular spot for RV camping.

Sunset Cliffs Sunset Cliffs free

A few miles from Cabrillo National Monument , Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is another excellent place for ocean views in Point Loma. Situated about 9 miles due west of downtown San Diego, Sunset Cliffs stretches across 68 acres and runs 1.5 miles along Point Loma peninsula's western shoreline. The dramatic sandstone cliffs and untouched vegetation along with its stunning ocean vistas make for an unforgettable stroll. The area is also home to a few secluded beaches as well, though getting to them can be tricky. There is a beach popular with locals at the beginning of Cordova Street off of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, but you have to traverse down the steep cliffs to get there. For an easier descent, head to the end of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard at Ladera Street and take a walk down the available stairway. It won't lead you to the beach, but it will get you just above the crashing waves. You can reach the sand by wading through water on the rocky shore. Nicknamed Garbage Beach for the kelp covering the rocks, the area is pretty popular with surfers, so expect to see lots of locals catching waves. If you venture farther up into Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, you'll find plenty of walking trails right along the ocean and through the coastal scrub that dot the area. 

As its name implies, sunset is a popular time to visit the park and recent visitors say arguably the best. If you want to avoid the crowds at dusk, try to plan a mid-week trip rather than a weekend visit. Travelers recommend bringing along a sweatshirt in case the ocean breeze gets a little too chilly. Past visitors also suggest using the restroom before stopping here as there are no facilities on-site. You can get to Sunset Cliffs via public transportation. If you're staying downtown, take the trolley to Old Town Transit Center then catch the No. 35 bus and it will take you to the beginning of the cliffs. Sunset Cliffs has no opening or closing hours, though it's best to go when there's light for maximum visibility. People have had accidents falling off of the cliffs, so be sure to observe the signs marking unstable cliffs. For more information, visit the parks and recreation website .

Jenny Slate has had a prolific year. Last January, her film Marcel the Shell With Shoes On was nominated for the best animated feature film Oscar. In February, she premiered her second stand-up special Seasoned Professional on Amazon Prime and announced the forthcoming publication of her sophomore memoir Lifeform . And this fall, she’ll be taking the book on tour.

Lifeform follows Slate’s 2019 debut Little Weirds , which used the sort of unconventional musings her fans have come to love to explore both the grief that came in the wake of her 2016 divorce and her approaches to friendship, feminism and finding love again. In the newest collection, she discusses her journey to and through motherhood through five phases: Single, True Love, Pregnancy, Baby and Ongoing.

“Completing this new work was a singular pleasure,” she previously told The Hollywood Reporter . “I dove deep, and I think I’ve surfaced more alive than ever, and I am so eager to share it all with anyone who is willing and ready. I know I am!”

The Lifeform tour, which is produced by Live Nation, will kick off on the book’s publication date of Oct. 22. The artist presale begins Tuesday, June 25, followed by additional presales throughout that week and the general onsale on Friday, June 28. See below for the full tour lineup:

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will travel to Mexico City, Mexico, for a bilateral visit from June 25 to 27.

June 25, 2024 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

While there, Minister Joly will meet with Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Mexico’s incoming Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and with Alicia Bárcena, current Secretary of Foreign Affairs and incoming Secretary of Environment, to discuss shared priorities. Additionally, Minister Joly will meet with Marcelo Ebrard, the incoming Secretary of Economy, to reaffirm the importance of the two countries’ strong economic ties and the trilateral North American trade and investment relationship.
