Best Things to Do in Isla Mujeres

Best nightlife in isla mujeres, best restaurants in isla mujeres, best time to visit isla mujeres, how to get to isla mujeres, how to get around isla mujeres.

Itzel Garrido/Travel + Leisure

Just off the coast of Cancun's busy Hotel Zone is a sliver of Caribbean island paradise. A 15-minute ferry ride, but an entire world away from the rattle and hum of Cancun’s Avenida Kukulkan, Isla Mujeres is a five-mile-long tropical oasis where the natural beauty dials up and the pace of life slows way, way down.

"Isla Mujeres is a great alternative to Cancun with excellent beaches, crystal-clear turquoise sea, no seaweed, and a much more local feel," said Zach Rabinor, CEO of Journey Mexico .

Named one of the best islands in Mexico and Central and South America by Travel + Leisure , Isla Mujeres has a laid-back, local vibe in the early mornings and evenings, and a buzzier, beach-party island scene in the afternoons.

The island's history spans centuries, originally serving as a sanctuary for the Mayan goddess Ixchel, the goddess of fertility — hence the name, Isla Mujeres. In the 19th century, it was established as a fishing village. Today it is a thriving coastal community, with gorgeous hotels, perfect beaches, and toes-in-the-sand restaurants. But it is also a paradise for outdoor adventure, thanks to its position along the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world.

"The island's well-drawn and colorful main streets offer guests a taste of authentic Mexican hospitality with a relaxed and cheerful Caribbean atmosphere," says Erika Mitzunaga, an expert on Isla Mujeres and the public relations director for the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun All-Inclusive Spa Resort over in Cancun's Hotel Zone. "Only nine miles from Cancun, a visit to this corner of Mexico is a must. Its beaches, its pirate stories, and its culinary richness based on its history as a fishing village make it one of the best attractions in the state of Quintana Roo."

Best Hotels & Resorts in Isla Mujeres

Impression isla mujeres by secrets.

Secrets' newest resort to open in the Mexican Caribbean, Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets , is an adults-only, all-inclusive property. The five-star resort has a remote location on the south side of the island away from the busy Playa Norte. It features fabulous restaurants and, according to Rabinor, its rooftop bar and lounge, The Top, is the place to be. The hotel also has a notable sustainability program, Save Our Sharks, designed to protect the shark population in the area.

Privilege Aluxes Hotel

Perfect for those who like to be close to town, Privilege Aluxes Hotel is a short walk to the town center, located on the sun-bleached shores of Playa Norte. The five-star resort is adults-only, with a collection of exclusive suites, each of which has its own Jacuzzi or private pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

If you want to soak in the island’s beautiful sunrises, look no further than the sleek, modern Hotel Izla . The 123-room resort has an oceanfront pool and a small section of beach, but the star feature here is its stunning rooftop infinity pool with endless views out over the Caribbean.

Belo Isla Mujeres

Located on the sugary shores of North Beach, Belo Isla Mujeres is an intimate boutique hotel with 65 guest rooms and suites. Book the Luxury Ocean Front Villa, with two bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, and views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Don't sleep on the fifth-floor rooftop pool with private Bali beds, hot tubs, a bar, and a rotating roster of live DJs.

Karen Doody/Stocktrek Images via Getty Images

Although the island is only five miles long and half a mile wide, travelers will find that the atmosphere shifts on the island as you move from north to south, offering a wide range of things to see and do in between. The northern tip is home to Playa Norte, one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, and a hot spot of hotels, activities, restaurants, and bars. The southern end of the island is far more tranquil, rugged, and remote, serving as the jumping-off point from which to explore Punta Sur and Garrafon Natural Reef Park.

Isla Mujeres Underwater Museum

Just off the southern coast of Isla Mujeres is the Underwater Art Museum , one of the most unique things to do in both Isla Mujeres and Cancun. “An important attraction of the island is the Isla Mujeres Underwater Museum, with more than 600 sculptures created to facilitate the preservation of natural coral reef,” said Mitzunaga.

Swim With Whale Sharks

Isla Mujeres is one of the best places in Mexico to swim with whale sharks. These gentle giants flock to the waters known as The Blue, a two-hour boat ride from the island, between May and September. It is one of the largest aggregations of whale sharks in the world.

Enjoy the Beach

Isla Mujeres’ Playa Norte is considered one of the best beaches in Mexico , if not the world. Thanks to its selection of buzzy beachfront bars and restaurants, fabulous hotels and water attractions, and fine, powder-soft sand, the beaches of Isla Mujeres are its pride and joy. And because the western coast of the island is protected, expect calm, clear water and no sargassum.

Bike (or Golf Cart) Around the Island

Unlike nearby Isla Holbox , cars are permitted on Isla Mujeres. But the most popular modes of transportation around the island are golf carts, scooters, or bicycles. But more than just practical, this style of seeing the island is a lot of fun and allows visitors to enjoy the scenery as they get around. The pace of life moves slowly at the beach in general, and that is definitely taken to a new level on Isla Mujeres. Tip: If you’re opting to bike the island, Rabinor recommends an early start before the heat and the humidity of the day become too smothering.

"My recommendation," said Mitzunaga, "is to take the ferry early, before 10 a.m., rent a golf cart and drive the five-mile-long island." The stops she recommends are: North Beach, which is recognized as one of the best beaches in the world; Punta Sur, to visit a small Mayan structure dedicated to the Goddess Ixchel; and the newly reopened turtle farm, which is managed by a local cooperative.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Isla Mujeres is as versatile as it is beautiful, with a party scene that can transition easily from day to night. Just walk along Playa Norte to see the array of toes-in-the-sand beach clubs, or, when the sun goes down, stroll along Avenida Hidalgo for the best nightlife.

Come to Xantolo for the menu of regional specialties from around Mexico, but stay for the sexy cocktails, salsa music, and fabulous people-watching. Salsa music kicks off every night at 10:30 p.m. and doesn't stop until after midnight.

The dressed-down vibe at Stingray is what hooks travelers in. Well, that and the swing chairs that surround the bar. But what keeps people coming back to this Avenida Hidalgo hot spot is the music. The two-story bar is in the heart of downtown Isla, just a block from Playa Norte, and features live music upstairs underneath the rooftop palapa. Downstairs things get a little more performative with late-night karaoke. You may find regulars here singing until the sun comes up.

Open to guests of Impressions by Secrets, this rooftop oasis is decked out with low-slung white couches, hanging lanterns, and billowing white curtains. The vibe here is sexy and chic, matched only by the sweeping panoramic ocean views. Rabinor says, "Go here for magnificent views over the Caribbean Sea and great drinks, as well as great service."

For such a small island, it's rather overwhelming how many great restaurants there are on Isla Mujeres.

Mitzunaga recommends that everyone stops at Marbella. "Go here for the quality of its food, access by yacht, and its beach club," she says. The barefoot luxury experience has stellar beachfront views and an impeccable menu of grilled seafood, crudo, and a stunning raw bar.

ZaZa Yacht & Beach Club

ZaZa's is much more than a restaurant — it's a destination in its own right. Featuring a private dock, a large saltwater pool, beachfront access, and a palapa-covered dining area, ZaZa's is a place meant to leisurely unwind for the entire day. Guests can make a general day pass reservation or bump it up a notch and splurge on the all-inclusive day pass.

Loncheria Alexia y Geovanny

Of course, not everything on Isla Mujeres has to be high-brow. Rabinor recommends Loncheria Alexia & Geovanny for traditional homemade local food. The tacos and fresh fish here are superb, and this is one of the top spots on Isla Mujeres that is beloved by locals. You'll find this spot by the Mercado Municipal.

Coco Restaurant & Beach Bar

Perched directly on Playa Norte, Coco Restaurant & Beach Bar is where you’ll want to be for sunset. The fiery, painted sky pairs perfectly with a plate of fresh fish or steak and shrimp skewers. Sip a tropical cocktail on the second floor for the best experience.

Mitzunaga notes that the most famous dish on the island is the Tikin Xic fish. "It is the most representative dish of Isla Mujeres," she says. "It is marinated with achiote, wrapped in banana leaves, and grilled. It is then served with red onion, salad, and rice."

Spacewalk/Getty Images

Mexico overall is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit Isla Mujeres is from December to March when days are bright and sunny and evenings are a bit cooler and breezy. The average high during these months is 83 degrees during the day. Visit Isla Mujeres in February or March for the Isla Carnival, a five-day festival of dancing, parades, and performances.

The high season is from January through April, when the weather is at its best but prices tend to be at their highest. Prices will be lower between May and December, but the low season (when you’ll find the best deals) is from September to November. This time, however, coincides with hurricane season, so expect a lot more rainfall during these months. The wettest month in Isla Mujeres is October.

While visitors can dock their own boats and yachts at the many clubs on the island, most people visit Isla Mujeres from the Gran Puerto Cancun ferry dock. The dock is located in Puerto Juarez, a few minutes from downtown Cancun. Ultramar ferry boats leave every half hour from 5 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., and every hour after that. The crossing takes 15 minutes.

Alternatively, the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun All-Inclusive Spa Resort, located in the Cancun Hotel Zone, has its own ferry stop for Isla Mujeres. Guests of the hotel get complimentary round-trip ferry tickets on a first-come, first-served basis by registering with the pool concierge the night before.

Isla Mujeres is not a car-free island, but most locals and visitors get around on two wheels or golf carts. Golf carts and scooter rentals are available all over Playa Norte. Guests can circumnavigate the island in about two hours, though plan for more time because you'll certainly want to stop and see the sights along the way.

Isla Mujeres Beach

A Bit Of History

This idyllic, tiny island has been held in high esteem and cherished for centuries. Revered by the Maya as a holy place, it continues to be celebrated by locals and tourists alike. The history of the island dates back 1500 years when it was the sanctuary for the Mayan goddess Ixchel, known as the goddess of the moon, happiness, medicine and fertility. A temple to honor Ixchel was known to exist on the southern tip of the island and doubled as a lighthouse for those who would come to worship or harvest salt. The island remained a Mayan sanctuary until it was “discovered” by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1517.

Isla Mujeres Today

Isla Mujeres Today

These days, Isla Mujeres is celebrated as a different kind of sanctuary. One that provides a calm serenity from the intensity and party culture of its neighbor across the bay,  Cancun . The tranquil environment, charming people, gorgeous beaches and of course, delectable food are a warm welcome for all who visit. Although most visitors only come for a day, there are more than enough activities to keep people of all ages entertained for several days.

Is Isla Mujeres Safe?

Is Isla Mujeres Safe?

Isla Mujeres is widely known as one of Mexico’s friendliest places and is considered very safe. The island itself is very small, making it very hard for significant crime to occur.

Additionally, there is a decent-sized Navy base on the island, keeping things peaceful and calm. Any crime that does happen on the island is typically done by chance, so be sure to keep an eye on your belongings and use common sense.

Where is Isla Mujeres?

Isla Mujeres On A Map

Isla Mujeres  is a small island just off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, directly across the water from Cancun . Located on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (the second-longest coral reef system in the world), Isla Mujeres is in a perfect spot for turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, and world-class diving and snorkeling. This is DEFINITELY the island life!

The Best Time to Visit Isla Mujeres

Looking for the best time to go to Isla Mujeres? The tropical climate in Isla Mujeres is quite predictable and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year (the average temperature lingers around 83 degrees F), it’s the rainy hurricane season that most travelers need to pay attention to.

January – April

Perfect weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person, consider this.

May – October

The hottest and most rainy months of the year but still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm water for snorkeling & diving. Also, the hurricane season peaks in September and October so keep an eye on the forecasts and definitely get travel insurance just in case. Fewer tourists mean you can typically expect lower rates at hotels, resorts and tour companies during this time.

November – December

The autumn-winter months are considered by many to be the best times to visit Isla Mujeres. The hurricane season has passed by this time and the humidity is low. Can be a little “chilly” in the evenings.

When Is Isla Mujeres Hurricane Season?

Isla Mujeres hurricane season begins in late May and lasts until early November, with the peak occurring between August and October. The odds of a hurricane hitting Isla Mujeres are low (less than half a dozen hurricanes have hit the Yucatan in the past 40 years), but hurricanes traveling near Isla Mujeres can still cause inclement and severe weather. Be sure to check weather reports ahead of time and we always suggest getting travel insurance during these months just in case.

Yucatan Ferry: Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Holbox

Arrival By Ferry

The Ultra Mar ferry offers 3 places to disembark in order to get to Isla Mujeres, including Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas, and Playa Caracol.  We recommend Puerto Juarez. From Cancun, take a short taxi ride or a bus to the Puerto Juarez ferry terminal, where you can buy your tickets at the Gran Puerto Cancun (Ultra Mar) ferry dock. You can buy a one-way ticket for around $16 or a round-trip ticket for about $32. The boat leaves Puerto Juarez every half an hour from 5:30 am until 6:00 pm (they skip the 2:30 run, so there is an hour gap from 2 to 3 pm) and then every hour after that until 11 pm.

Isla Mujeres Catamaran

Arrival By Catamaran Day Cruise

Throughout Cancun & Playa del Carmen you can book a day trip to Isla Mujeres. These fun boats take you out on beautiful catamarans for a whole day of snorkeling and cruising. Golf Carts are a hugely popular way to get around the island and can be rented in town on Rueda Medina when you disembark from the ferry. The price will be between $50-$65 for a day. Prices are regulated and the same everywhere so look for the best quality and service.

Taxi in Mexico

Taxis On The Island

Taxis are plentiful on the island and can easily be flagged down or called by your hotel. Be sure to discuss the prices in advance of taking the ride so you don’t get overcharged. This is an easy way to explore the island.

Things to Do in Isla Mujeres

Isla mujeres top highlights.

There is plenty to do on Isla Mujeres. Whether you just want to relax or have an adventure, you’re sure to find something amazing to do. Here are some of our favorite recommendations.

Beaches on Isla Mujeres

1. Hit The Beach!

If it is pure relaxation you are seeking, Isla Mujeres has you covered. Easily laze away the day in a hammock at one of several beach clubs, splash around in the gorgeous sea, sip on a refreshing beverage in a coconut or get a massage at a pop-up stand on the beach. Eco and Historic Park Punta Sur Park in Isla Mujeres

2. Visit Punta Sur Park

A shockingly beautiful historic/eco park at the southernmost end of Isla Mujeres, Punta Sur is not to be missed for nature lovers. Complete with Mayan ruins, epic views, trails, cliffs, iguanas and more, taking a stroll through Punta Sur is a great way to get outside and experience something different on the island. Seeing the blue water here alone is worth it.

ISLAND LIFE TRAVEL TIP : GET TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel Insurance is a must in our opinion. Standard health insurance likely doesn’t cover you while outside of the country so travel insurance will cover any emergency medical needs as well as trip cancellation, lost or stolen luggage (it happens), flight delays, missed connections and more. You can easily compare the top-rated travel insurance plans here .

MUSA Underwater Sculpture Garden in Isla Mujeres

3. See An Underwater Sculpture Garden

Go on a diving or snorkeling expedition to nearby MUSA Underwater Sculpture Park. Possibly the largest underwater sculpture project in the world, MUSA is home to over 500 sculptures of people, animals, cars, and so much more. Envisioned as an artificial reef, the sculptures are now growing plants and coral on them giving an otherworldly quality to the experience.

Explore snorkeling and scuba trips to MUSA here .

Dive, kayak, or snorkel at Parque De Los Suenos at Kin Ha in Isla Mujeres

4. Parque De Los Suenos at Kin Ha

Looking for a different way to spend your day? Diving, kayaking, snorkeling, boating, and everything in between are always on offer at Kin Ha. No matter where your mood guides you, you won’t be disappointed. This unique and wonderful beach club also has several terraced pools to relax and look out at the sea. The entrance fee gives you access to everything you may need such as lockers, towels and washroom facilities. Food and beverages are at an additional fee.

Snorkeling in Isla Mujeres

5. Go Snorkeling

While Cozumel gets most of the praise for its world-class snorkeling & diving, Isla Mujeres is no slouch either. Besides the MUSA underwater sculpture garden, there are several other lovely sites and reefs easily within reach. Perhaps the most famous is El Farito with its bright corals and and colorful fish. Or, if you are here at the right time of year (late May to early September), take a boat tour to experience snorkeling with the incredible Whale Sharks! The largest fish in the sea.

Check out this popular snorkeling tour

Relax at Garrafon De Castilla in Isla Mujeres

6. Garrafon De Castilla

This off the beaten path place to swim, sun and snorkel is a perfect place to relax. A spectacular setting, soft sand, lounge chairs and just the right number of amenities. With very affordable prices and few crowds, this may become your favorite place to snorkel on the island.

*DO NOT CONFUSE THIS with the Garrafon National Reef Park, which is an entertainment center that uses captive animals to entertain tourists. Not to mention houses said animals in small enclosures. We at Island Life do not support such places because we feel places like these are unethical and we love animals.

7. Eat Your Heart Out At Mercado Municipal

Mercado Municipal is the central market of Isla Mujeres and is the perfect place for an authentic, no-frills meal. This lively local market offers a glimpse into island life with authentic meals at unbeatable prices. The atmosphere inside the market is always bustling and vibrant, with locals gathering to haggle over prices and enjoy lunchtime snacks. Whether you want delicious eats, fresh juices, or local produce, you will find it at Mercado Municipal. Come with an empty stomach, explore the different stalls, and try a bit of everything.

Keep in mind that Mercado Municipal can be busy at lunchtime, but the craziness of the food market is one of the reasons we love it. Some of the most delicious, fresh food on Isla Mujeres is at the market. Don’t miss out on the vibrant fish tacos and savory empanadas.

8. Take A Sunset Cruise

Isla Mujeres is known for its stunning multi-hued sunsets, and one of the best ways to experience the golden hours of sunset is on a cruise. A sunset cruise off the shores of Isla Mujeres is the perfect way to end a day of exploring the island.

There are a few sunset tours on the island, but the most famous is probably the sunset cruise offered by The Joint Reggae Bar n’ Grill . This 3-hour sunset sail includes live reggae music, unlimited drinks and more!

9. Bike or Golf Cart Around the Island

You can’t beat exploring Isla Mujeres on a golf cart or bike. While cars are permitted on Isla Mujeres, very few are on the island. This makes golf cart rentals the best way to get around, and let’s be honest; they are so much fun! Isla Mujeres is also the perfect destination to rent a bike and explore. You can rent a bike on the island for around $10-$20 (USD) per day.

You can easily rent a golf cart when you disembark from the ferry, and it will cost between $50-$65 for a day. You will need a valid driver’s license to rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres. Once you get your golf cart, follow basic road rules and watch out for pedestrians. We recommend stopping at North Beach and Punta Sur to see the Mayan ruins dedicated to the Goddess Ixchel.

If you want to add an extra dose of fun to your visit to Isla Mujeres, consider this Golf Course Bar Crawl with a local guide and tour around the island, where you can sample Mezcal, Mojitos, Margaritas, and fresh guacamole.

10. Marvel At the Street Art

Isla Mujeres is a beautiful and vibrant town positively covered in beautiful street art, from the well-known sea wall murals to intricate paintings on buildings downtown. Trust us, you will want to have your camera handy while exploring the island and looking for street art.

The sea wall murals on Isla Mujeres offer a dose of art and activism. Many of the ocean-themed art pieces were created to raise awareness about important issues, including ecotourism, sustainability, and the conservation of whale sharks. They are scattered all around the island, so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding some.

If you want to learn more about the history behind the murals, you can take a tour with the Isla Mujeres Street Art Tour . This tour takes you off the beaten path to help you explore the lesser-known street art of the island.

Fishing here includes deep-sea fishing, spearfishing and inshore fishing. Whether you are an experienced angler or a beginner, fishing around Isla Mujeres is a great way to spend the day on the water.

Typically, the fishing excursions offered on the island include fishing equipment, bait, and tackle. You can catch a variety of fish, ranging from marlin and dorado to snapper, grouper and even tuna and mahi-mahi. It just depends on the season.

This highly recommended Private Inshore Fishing Experience is perfect for the whole family. Your group will board a private boat, head a few miles from the Isla Mujeres coastline, and spend time trolling for fish. Cast your line in the hopes of hooking barracuda, snapper, grouper and more, depending on the season.

Is there a better way to enjoy island life than a calming yoga class with the waves lapping on the beach next to you? Build on those relaxing island vibes with a yoga practice that makes you feel centered and peaceful.

Most beach yoga classes on the island are 60-minute classes for around $20 (USD), and there are classes suitable for all fitness levels. 13. Stroll Down Avenida Miguel Hidalgo

Discover the charms of the Isla Mujeres pedestrian street of Miguel Hidalgo. This is a spot where you can enjoy the lively ambiance of the island. On this colorful avenue, you can find quaint boutiques, many restaurants, and a variety of tour operators.

We recommend visiting in the evening once the heat of the day cools down a bit and the entire avenue lights up. Avenida Miguel Hidalgo is a fantastic place to take an evening stroll and enjoy the fun island vibes of Isla Mujeres.

Remember that the restaurants in Miguel Hidalgo are catered towards tourists and can be slightly more expensive than those on the back streets. However, the quality of the meals is excellent.

14. Take A Day Trip to Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy is one of the most enchanting day trips in the Mexican Caribbean. Beautiful and uninhabited Isla Contoy is just 18 miles (30km) from Isla Mujeres. On the protected Isla Contoy, you can find stunning white-sand beaches, over 150 species of birds, and nesting grounds for sea turtles.

Many day trips to Isla Contoy include snorkeling, a tour of the island, and lunch. You’ll also have enough free time to explore or simply lounge by the beach and soak up the sun!

There are plenty of excellent day tours to choose from, including this highly recommended Isla Contoy Eco Adventure . This guided tour offers sailing and snorkeling on the beautiful Isla Contoy, along with a history of the flora and fauna of the island. After exploring, the tour includes a delicious lunch and open bar at an Isla Contoy hot spot. Note that most Contoy tours depart from Cancun so make sure you book a tour from Isla Mujeres if you are staying there.

15. Swim With Whale Sharks

Swimming with whale sharks is one of the best ways to experience the magic of Isla Mujeres. The waters around the island are on the migration route of whale sharks, making this one of the best places to spot them. From May to September, you can swim with these gentle giants in the waters off the coast and take in their enormous size and grace.

Whale sharks are incredible creatures, and seeing them in their natural habitat is nothing short of a spectacular experience. While snorkeling and swimming with whale sharks, you can also see manta rays and other marine life. Note that touching the whale sharks or inhibiting them in any way is strictly forbidden.

This highly recommended Whale Shark Swimming Tour offers a swim with whale sharks, followed by relaxing on Playa Norte beach with a fresh ceviche lunch. Be sure to request Isla Mujeres pick up when booking.

I’m new to traveling to Mexico and just started my research. Isla Mujeres sounds perfect! Would love a relaxing vibe versus big, party city vibe. How friendly is the island for Americans that don’t speak much Spanish?

Its very friendly. Many people speak English there. Enjoy!

Thank you for this brief but detailed information. I’ve been to a few cities in Mexico a few times but hadn’t heard of Isla Mujeres. I’m looking forward to going now and I can plan better because of what this site has put together.

I’ve never seen the ocean or flew on a plane! So I’m super excited to have so many first experience’s!!! February can’t come fast enough!!!!

I just came here to say that the underwater sculpture was one of my favorite parts of my trip to Mexico. I experienced it on a snorkeling tour and it was so worth it.

We had never heard of Isla Mujeres until coming across your guide when researching Mexico. This place looks amazing and now we’re going to make sure that we at least make a stop for a few nights here.

My family visited Isla Mujeres after coming across this visitor guide when planning our trip to Mexico. This place was great. We all especially loved Punta Sur Park. My teen enjoyed the Mayan ruins while my youngest loved all the little iguanas we found.

How is covid testing being handled on the island? We have been visiting Isla for over 10 years and haven’t been in over 2 years now due to covid. Planning on visiting at the end of October. Staying at Cabanas. We will need to be tested prior to returning to the US.

Testing is done internally at most large hotels and resorts, though many visitors choose to be tested at a local lab instead to avoid the possibility of a mandatory hotel quarantine if they get a positive test in the hotel. You can also get tested at the airport, but that’s sort of a last resort option in my opinion. I absolutely recommend getting Travel Insurance though just in case!

I had originally planned to just visit Mujeres for a day with my husband, then we read your guides about the place and decided to stay here. We love it. Such a relaxed vibe here, we ended up staying here for our entire vacation. Thank you!

Excellent guide(s), very helpful for planning a family vacation. We have been to the Yucatan so many times and it was such a pleasure to come somewhere new. Thanks.

I also recommend Guru Beach Club. Great guide here.

I was looking for a chill and amazing place for my birthday celebration and your guide sold me on Isla Mujeres..the island of Women! love that 😊 It was magical. Thank you!

Goodnesses me, ya’ll make it sound so exciting to visit Isla Mujeres! I have used this guide and the others to plan my whole visit! AAAAHHHHH I am so excited! Thank you for making it so easy for me. LOVE your guides!!!

Isla Mujeres

Retreat for the day to Isla Mujeres' stunning, turquoise-water beaches, just a quick boat ride from Cancún.

Catamaran offshore near Isla Mujeres Mexico--a catamaran tour to Isla Mujeres makes a fun day trip from Cancun

17 Best Things to Do in Isla Mujeres, Mexico’s Laid-Back Island Paradise

Located just off the coast of bustling Cancun, Isla Mujeres just may be one of the most perfect beach getaways in Mexico–and the plethora of fun things to do in Isla Mujeres is definitely a big part of the reason why (but the sheer beauty of Isla Mujeres’ beaches also plays a role).

This stunning, small island is home to idyllic beaches, an adorable and colorful town center, accommodation for every style, and potential adventures galore.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico, one of those islands that just about everyone loves.

It’s laid-back and easy enough to navigate that even travelers tentatively stepping a foot out of Mexico’s all-inclusive scene for the first time will have a fantastic trip, and engaging enough that even long-time travelers will never be bored.

Boasting phenomenal sunsets, some of the most postcard-worthy beaches we’ve ever laid eyes on, and a wide variety of things to do, Isla Mujeres is one of those islands that’s impossible to resist.

We fell in love with it immediately–here’s what to do on Islaa Mujeres so that you can do the same.

Chill out on Playa Norte.

Often listed as one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico and even the world, Isla Mujeres’ Playa Norte is a long stretch of white sand beach on the north side of the island and is all palm trees, incredibly soft sand, and bright water.

The beach can get crowded–multiple bars, restaurants, and resorts offering up beach chairs will do that–but it’s still an amazing place to spend a day in Isla Mujeres.

Personally, we walked all the way west on Playa Norte, about as far as you can get before reaching Playa Sol, and found the crowds far more manageable and the experience downright idyllic.

Rent a golf cart and road trip the island.

Exploring the island by golf cart (or moped, if you prefer) is one of the most quintessential things to do in Isla Mujeres and absolutely should not be missed!

Driving is both easy and simple: with one main road that circumnavigates the island, it’s virtually impossible to get lost when driving around Isla Mujeres.

If you’re wondering exactly how to best access some of the Isla Mujeres attractions that are further from town, the answer is simple: a golf cart will get you there.

You can expect to pay about $30-45 USD for a golf cart rental for the day (gas included), and there is no shortage of shops offering the service.

Pay a visit to MUSA.

The Cancun Underwater Museum of Art, or MUSA, is made up of over 500 statues and various other structures and is located on the seafloor surrounding Isla Mujeres and Cancun.

Visiting is definitely one of the best things to do in Cancun and Isla Mujeres both!

Installed primarily to promote coral life in the area, MUSA doubles as a tourist attraction, and it makes for a phenomenal diving, snorkeling, and even glass-bottom boat tour location when visiting Isla Mujeres!

Check out the Ixchel Ruins & Punta Sur.

The Mayan goddess of Ixchel ruled over fertility, medicine, happiness, and the moon–so, you know, just a few important things in life!

At the very edge of the island, on the tip of Punta Sur (literally “South Point”) sits the ruins of the temple of Ixchel, along with a few other Mayan ruins.

The site itself is small–certainly nothing like the full-blown Mayan cities you can visit on the mainland–but the location itself is absolutely magnificent.

In addition to being a temple, Punta Sur also served as a lighthouse and looking out over the rough, rocky coast, I’m sure it’s obvious as to why!

Today, in addition to the Mayan ruins, Punta Sur is home to a statue of Ixchel, a gigantic iguana statue, and several souvenir shops and convenience stores set up to cater to the passing tourists.

Eat your heart out at Mercado Municipal.

Mercado Municipal, Isla Mujeres’ central market, is the perfect place for a no-frills, affordable, delicious breakfast or lunch.

Be sure to leave the more tourist-centered restaurants behind at least once to eat here, where everyone, tourist and local alike, settles on plastic chairs under overworked fans for fabulous food.

We ate breakfast here every single day of our Isla Mujeres vacation, unable to stay away.

Snap photos of the wild beaches on the east coast.

Isla Mujeres’ picture-perfect north coast and stunning west coast are where the bulk of the swimming happens on the island.

That being said, while the east coast beaches are far, far rougher–more like something you would expect on the west coast of the USA than the Caribbean–they are absolutely gorgeous and well worth admiring from the shore.

Jeremy Storm on the rocky beach of Isla Mujeres east coast

Spot the shell house.

As you drive down the east coast of the island, be sure to keep an eye on the glamorous mansions to your left as well as the stunning sea visible to the right–you just may be able to pick out the shell house , which is one of the most famous Airbnbs in the world!

It’s easy to see from the road, and well–pretty distinct. I had no idea exactly where it was on the island and spotted it immediately as we passed by in our golf cart.

… or hit the water for a sunset cruise.

Not content to watch the sunset from the shore?

Join a catamaran cruise to admire the sunset from the water instead!

This is one of the most popular Isla Mujeres activities, and one look at the sunsets over the island makes it very obvious why that is.

Grab a photo with the colorful Isla Mujeres sign.

All across Mexico, you can find colorful signs with the town’s name displayed in prominent public spaces, and Isla Mujeres is no exception!

Located close to the center of town, it’s easy to stroll over for a quick photo op and some lovely sea views.

Kate Storm standing in front of colorful Isla Mujeres sign, one of the fun places to visit in Isla Mujeres Mexico

Watch the sunset on Playa Sol.

Playa Sol is known for being a beautiful Isla Mujeres beach that is just ever so slightly less desirable than Playa Norte, partially because the water is a tad cloudier.

That being said, there’s no doubt that west-facing Playa Sol rules the island at sunset, when visitors can be treated to an absolutely stunning view as the sun goes down.

Head to a beach resort to relax the day away.

From laid-back, no-frills beach resorts like Garrafon de Castilla (we adored the views from here!) to full-on adventure parks like Parque de los Suenos, there’s no shortage of places to hit the water in Isla Mujeres that are far away from the crowds of Playa Norte, but also not closed to the public.

The best way to find them?

With a golf cart!

Go snorkeling… or scuba diving!

Dive shops and snorkeling tours abound on the island, and admiring life underwater is definitely one of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres.

Stroll down Avenida Miguel Hidalgo.

Isla Mujeres’ bustling Avenida Miguel Hidalgo is the heart of tourism on the island.

Lined with restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and souvenir shops, it’s colorful, photogenic, and absolutely a fun place to see in Isla Mujeres.

We wouldn’t necessarily recommend eating or shopping here unless you’re comfortable with a steeper-than-average price tag for the area, but even if you don’t sit down at a restaurant, Avenida Miguel Hidalgo is definitely worth a stroll.

Avenida Miguel Hildalgo in Isla Mujeres Mexico

Pay a visit to Isla Mujeres’ turtle sanctuary.

2023 Update : Sadly, this sanctuary has been closed. If anyone hears of another sanctuary being opened in the future, please let us know!

Called Tortugranja (or “turtle farm”), this small sanctuary-slash-aquarium is the perfect roadside Isla Mujeres attraction to enjoy during your golf cart tour around the island.

Tortugranja’s main purpose is to help baby turtles hatch and reach the Caribbean Sea safely, but in addition, the farm is home to several turtles who cannot currently live safely in the wild.

The sanctuary is small and simple, with no frills, but it is an excellent place to visit as you explore Isla Mujeres!

Tickets are 30 pesos/person, and there are bathrooms and a small gift shop on site as well.

Two turtles at Isla Mujeres turtle sanctuary as seen from above. Definitely consider a visit here when deciding what to do on Isla Mujeres Mexico

Take a day trip to Isla Contoy.

Beautiful, uninhabited Isla Contoy lies about 30km/18 miles away from Isla Mujeres, and is one of the best day trips from Isla Mujeres!

Home to stunning white-sand beaches and an impressively diverse bird population, Isla Contoy is a protected island and a delight to visit.

If you book a day trip to Isla Contoy, you’ll also almost certainly stop for some incredible snorkeling along the way.

Planning a day trip from the mainland and want to squeeze in visits to both bustling Isla Mujeres and the more remote feeling Isla Contoy? This tour is a great option!

Book your day trip to Isla Contoy + Isla Mujeres today!

Admire the colorful murals of Isla Mujeres.

The beautiful, vibrant town Isla Mujeres is positively covered in beautiful street art, from its well-known sea wall murals to intricate paintings on everything from souvenir shops to municipal buildings.

Be sure to keep your camera handy when exploring Isla Mujeres–you’ll want to capture some of these for yourself.

Go swimming with whale sharks.

From June to September, the waters near Isla Mujeres play host to some of the most awe-inspiring underwater creatures that can be observed with nothing more than a snorkel: whale sharks!

Often clocking in at more than 40 feet long, these slow-moving gentle giants are completely safe to get in the water with, making snorkeling with them a one of the most sought-after activities in Isla Mujeres.

Sadly, our first Isla Mujeres vacation didn’t overlap with whale shark season–all the more reason to return to the island soon.

Isla Mujeres has all kinds of accommodation, from budget hostels to luxury digs, with plenty in between.

Unless you’re planning on renting a golf cart for the duration of your stay and/or you’re more interested in hanging out on one particular beach than exploring all the different things to do in Isla Mujeres, we recommend staying within walking distance of Avenida Miguel Hidalgo and Playa Norte.

As long as your hotel is a comfortable walk from there, you’ll be within reach of all the action.

Here are a few well-reviewed options, including the hotel we loved!

two margaritas being held out in front of the beach--relaxing here belongs on any list of what to do in isla mujeres mexico

Maya Casitas — For those looking to leave hostel life behind but still travel on a budget, Maya Casitas is an excellent place to stay in Isla Mujeres!

Located in the heart of downtown and within walking distance of Playa Norte, Maya Casitas gets rave reviews–especially for its location and breakfast.

Check rates & book your stay at Maya Casitas today!

Bahia Chac Chi — We loved our stay at Bahia Chac Chi! Featuring spacious rooms, a lovely staff, comfortable beds, and an excellent location within an easy walk of both the port and Playa Norte, we greatly enjoyed our stay and would be happy to return.

The only downside?

The limited continental breakfast–we ended up skipping it and spending a few dollars for breakfast at Mercado Municipal every day instead, which was well worth it to us!

Check rates & book your stay at Bahia Chac Chi today!

Mia Reef — Isla Mujeres doesn’t have a ton of the all-inclusive luxury hotels that the Riviera Maya is known for, but Mia Reef is among them!

Boasting a competitive price for an all-inclusive and an excellent location on the north point of the island (depending on the tide, Mia Reef appears to sit on a private island of its own), Mia Reef gets great reviews for offering all the convenience of an all-inclusive experience while also being right next to the town of Isla Mujeres and steps away from Playa Norte!

Check rates & book your stay at Mia Reef today!

Isla Mujeres is extremely simple to access from Cancun: ferries leave every 30 minutes, starting at 5:30 AM and going until 11:30 PM, from Puerto Juarez.

There are also additional ferries that leave less frequently (and for a higher price tag) from Cancun’s hotel zone.

You can check ferry prices, schedule, and tickets here .

Getting to Puerto Juarez from the Cancun Airport

Puerto Juarez is about a 30-minute drive from the Cancun Airport, and the easiest way to get there is via shuttle or taxi service.

Feel free to negotiate with one of the taxi companies that has set up shop near the exit to the Cancun Airport, but keep in mind the price is a bit steep–usually between $30-$40 USD per car (and many may try to charge more).

To save money, you can also take the ADO bus (Mexico’s main first-class bus network) into Cancun, and then pick up a local bus or taxi that will take you to Puerto Juarez.

This will take longer and be less comfortable, but definitely save lots of money!

Want to take a day trip to Isla Mujeres from Cancun?

You absolutely can!

If you’d like to spend a day experiencing all the best things to do in Isla Mujeres, you have two options: book a tour, or hop the ferry yourself.

The bulk of the ferries to Isla Mujeres leave from Puerto Juarez (more on that in the above section), which is outside Cancun’s hotel zone, but there are also ferries leaving directly from the hotel zone (for a higher price).

An organized Isla Mujeres day trip is best for those who are mostly looking to see Playa Norte, do some snorkeling, and enjoy the sparkling waters from a catamaran.

This tour is a great option for that.

If you’re hoping to check out several of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres and explore independently, we recommend simply taking the ferry.

You can check out the schedule here , and read more about the experience above.

Bottom line: the Isla Mujeres ferry is very easy to use, and we highly recommend it!

Don’t want to worry about handling transportation? Book your day tour  to Isla Mujeres today!

Safety is, of course, a deeply personal issue, so I can only offer our perspective here–but yes, we perceive Isla Mujeres to be extremely safe, which is in line with additional reports and articles about the area.

Crime against tourists, when it occurs, tends to be limited to property crimes of opportunity.

We wouldn’t recommend leaving your phone on your beach chair and walking away to swim, for example, but we also wouldn’t be remotely fearful of walking down the street.

After traveling to nearly 50 countries and extensively throughout Mexico, we consider Isla Mujeres to be an ideal first destination in Mexico for a traveler who is a bit nervous about visiting but also wants to avoid the all-inclusive resort bubble.

Palm trees as seen looking back toward the shore in the water at Playa Norte Isla Mujeres

The island is friendly, easy to get around, a small/manageable size, easy to access, and there are plenty of English speakers around if your Spanish is limited or you get tripped up!

Of course, basic safety requirements are required in Isla Mujeres: don’t get too intoxicated (especially alone or at night), don’t step foot near any sort of illegal activity, and stay aware of your surroundings.

But that being said, I really cannot overemphasize how generally safe, relaxing, and comfortable we found the environment on Isla Mujeres.

There are two distinct best times to visit Isla Mujeres.

The first is from January to April, when you’ll find the best weather with the highest chance experiencing an uninterrupted stream of warm, sunny days.

The second is from June to September, when the weather can be a bit more temperamental (read: cloudy and rainy), but the whale sharks are in town.

Regardless of which time frame you choose to visit the island, you’re bound to enjoy many of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres, Mexico!

Wondering what to pack for an Isla Mujeres vacation?

Be sure to throw these items in your bag!

Reef-Safe Sunscreen — Protect the sensitive coral reefs that live in the area by bringing reef-safe sunscreen along on your Isla Mujeres vacation!

Travel Insurance — We don’t ever suggest traveling without insurance–anything can happen, and this is definitely a case of better safe than sorry.

Traveling to Mexico is generally safe, of course, but it also likely involves stepping outside your comfort zone and trying out new adventures in a foreign land… where you may or may not speak the language.

We use and recommend  Safety Wing for trips to Mexico.

Comfortable Day Bag  — We currently use  Pacsafe’s sleek anti-theft backpack  and love it, but if you don’t want to shell out the cash for this trip, that’s totally understandable.

Just aim for something comfortable to wear, not flashy, and medium-sized–we used a  Northface Jester backpack  for years and loved it as well.

Jeremy Storm wearing Pacsafe antitheft backpack on Isla Mujeres Mexico

Cute Beach Coverup — You won’t want to walk around town wearing only your bathing suit, but dealing with wet clothes is also a pain.

Something like this is the perfect solution!

Steripen — Save money and avoid adding more plastic to the Earth–a SteriPen is a win/win.

We’ve used ours in more than a dozen countries over the years, including all throughout Mexico and Central America, and never gotten sick from the water.

About Kate Storm

Image of the author, Kate Storm

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

Thank you for your tips. They were really helpful for our preparations. Having been there yesterday (October 2021) with the family, I do feel the need to add a few impressions to provide potential visitors with a fuller picture:

1. If you want to snorkel, you have two options: take a boat tour or go into one of the restaurant/hang out places (where you pay for the amenities with higher food prices). Snorkeling with your own gear simply by jumping into the sea at a beach is not really an option. 2. The east coast is near impossible to swim or snorkel. It is pretty rocky and whenever you find a spot with a possible entrance, the background was either a large trash dump or an ugly construction site or some other unwelcoming scenery. On the west coast the line of hotels was so close that by passing the road in your golf cart you could hardly get a glimpse of the beach. The view was usually blocked by high walls and large hotels complexes. 3. The island isn’t an idyllic small remote “untouched” place. It is a crowded, busy and intensely developed place. Even the much vaunted Playa Norte didn’t offer anything that our house beach (Playa Paraiso) on the mainland doesn’t offer as well, except for the big crowds and the people shouting “massage” when you pass them. 4. This most southern point offers the best photo opportunities with the open landscape and the turquoise sea in the background and a restaurant, but is well frequented as well, including entire big bus loads of tourists. 5. The ferries run from Juarez every 30 minutes and can be booked last minute (at least in October) but are fully occupied inside and near full on the upper deck (with no sun protection). The view plus the life music make the upper deck the more entertaining option by far.

Thank you. Agreed with what you said.

Very informative, thank you. We are going in Feb. My one question is where did you actually enjoy good snorkling?

Tortugranja closed in 2021 due to mismanagement. Just wanted to let you know as I found it from your post and wanted to check if it was an ethical encounter. Figured I’d let you know.

That’s too bad, but thank you for letting us know! I’ll get the post updated.

That seems about right, since we rates were around $30-45 when we visited a few years ago for the day (not keeping it overnight). I wouldn’t be surprised if prices have gone up a bit since February 2020, which is when we were last there!

A Day Trip to Isla Mujeres, Mexico: Everything You Need to Know

A colorfull sign reading 'Isla Mujeres' on a sandy beach with the sea in the background

Welcome to this guide on visiting Isla Mujeres.

And although I’ll describe how to plan a perfect Isla Mujeres day trip , after reading what the island has to offer you might decide to stay longer than just a day!

Literally translated as “Island of Women”, this beautiful island is located just off the coast of Cancún in the Caribbean Sea.

Known for its great beaches and lively party scene, it is a great escape from the more touristy areas of Cancún and Playa del Carmen and is only a short ferry ride away.

In this article, we will explore the island, how to get there, what you can see and do, the best time to visit as well as some recommendations for a perfect day trip.

The easiest way to plan a day trip to Isla Mujeres is by booking a full-day catamaran tour to Isla Mujeres .

But, you can also take a ferry to the island to spend the day exploring everything Isla Mujeres has to offer.

And that; both how to get to Isla Mujeres and the best things to do on Isla Mujeres is what I want to share with you.

A Day Trip to Isla Mujeres

a day trip to Isla Mujeres

With the region of the Riviera Maya being quite large, many wonder what Isla de Mujeres offers and why you should travel here rather than elsewhere.

Why Travel to Isla Mujeres?

The island as a whole is a lot quieter than the bigger cities of Cancún and Playa del Carmen , which is why many come here for more peaceful vibes. However, the island still retains a nice ambiance and atmosphere.

There is a nice mix of both busy and secluded beaches, with the option of a lively night out . So after soaking up the sun, you can head to numerous bars and clubs that are open until the early hours.

One of my favorite bars on Isla Mujeres is Isla Brewing Company, which is an excellent option on the northern end of the island, with a great range of craft beers!

On the north side of the island, there are lots of beautiful beaches and some of the best waters for diving and snorkeling in the entire region.

And to add to that, Isla de Mujeres also happens to be one of the most popular places in Mexico to get your PADI scuba diving certificate . This is due to the cheap prices, numerous companies that are based here as well as the great visibility of the waters and exotic marine wildlife that you can observe.

How to Get to Isla Mujeres?

Ultramar ferry docked at Isla Mujeres

A visit to Isla Mujeres is a popular day trip from Cancun , but also from Playa del Carmen.

And getting to Isla Mujeres is easy.

You can get the ferry either from Puerto Juarez or from two locations in the Cancun hotel zone : Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol. Puerto Juarez is the cheapest option and buying a round-trip ticket is slightly cheaper than buying two one-way tickets.

At all three locations the ferry is operated by Ultramar, which has a good website , in English, with timetables and prices. You can book online or go to the ferry terminal and buy your ticket there.

Alternatively, if you choose to take the ferry from Puerto Juarez, Jetway is another provider there with slightly lower prices than Ultramar.

If you are in Playa del Carmen (slightly more south than Cancun), then be aware that despite having a large port as well, they don’t actually offer ferries to Isla Mujeres . You’ll need to take a bus to Cancún and then take one of the ferries mentioned above.

Use the bus company called ADO — one of Mexico’s coach services. They run routes all over the country, are inexpensive and the buses are clean and modern.

Tip: if you are planning a day trip to Isla Mujeres, make sure you check the time of the last ferry back!

Things To Do on Isla Mujeres

In this part of the guide, we will look at some of the best things you can see and do when visiting Isla de Mujeres.

However, check out the “best time to visit Isla Mujeres” section below as well, as some of these may be impacted by the season.

1. Snorkeling and Diving

scuba diver getting ready for a dive

Isla Mujeres is one of the most popular places to learn to dive or to go diving as an already certified diver. Many travelers visit Isla Mujeres with the sole purpose of scuba diving the beautiful dive sites.

As well as some of the lowest prices, there are some really beautiful, crystal clear waters to explore on the north and western sides of the island.

Another great experience is swimming with whale sharks , and the best time to do so is between May and August. There are small tours you can join to see the whale sharks. However, because whale sharks are protected by the island, only one or two people can swim with them at a time.

If you like to snorkel on your own from the beach, Isla Mujeres unfortunately is not the best place. Although they do have Garafon Reef (where you can also go kayaking and zip-lining by the way), the waves around the island can be high and rough. Then there’s North Beach which is perhaps the calmest spot on the island, but visibility is not great.

The best snorkeling around Isla Mujeres is done by boat. So if you’re mainly interested in snorkeling and spending the day on the water, then scroll down and read my recommendations for Isla Mujeres boat tours.

Tip: if you are only planning a one-day trip to Isla Mujeres and want to go diving or swim with whale sharks, I highly recommend booking that in advance. Do a Google search for dive centers on Isla Mujeres. Almost all of them offer diving, snorkeling, and swimming with whale sharks (during the season). Read some reviews and choose the one you feel most comfortable with.

2. The Underwater Museum

MUSA underwater sculptures

Another really cool thing to do on Isla Mujeres is visit MUSA (Museo subacuático de Arte), which is a one-of-a-kind underwater museum located just off the coast of Isla de Mujeres!

There are over 500 life-size sculptures, spread out underwater between Isla Mujeres and Cancun.

Whilst you can’t visit independently, many dive centers offer trips here. And because the dive site is shallow, even if you’re not a certified scuba diver yet, you could, after some initial training, do a first dive here!

Do keep in mind that if you are not a certified diver, going diving here will take up most of your day. So if this is something you really want to do, you might want to change your day trip to Isla Mujeres into a multi-day trip.

And, although diving will give you the best experience, you can also snorkel here. Most sculptures are located in relatively shallow water, so you can easily see them while snorkeling above them.

3. The Beaches

one of the beaches on Isla Mujeres

The island has two main zones for beaches. You will find the best beaches for relaxing and swimming on the north end, with the best being Playa Norte (also known as Playa Cocos) where there are virtually no waves and plenty of space. However, this beach tends to attract more people.

The western side (which faces the busy hotel zone of Cancún) has many beaches where you can swim, and it has a nice range of amenities nearby. Two of the best beaches in this area are Playa Lancheros and Playa Indios.

The southern end of the island is more rugged, with a hilly landscape and shorelines, whilst the eastern side is wilder and is open sea until you hit Cuba (too dangerous to swim).

ruins of the Ixchel temple

On the southern tip of the island known as Punta Sur ( south point in English), you can visit the ruins of the Ixchel temple , which were dedicated to the goddess Ixchel herself.

Ixchel is known as the ancient Mayan goddess of medicine and midwifery, and many Mayan women used to make the pilgrimage to the island to honor her.

Nowadays, despite the ruins being mostly eroded due to hurricanes, you can still climb up the vantage point and get beautiful panoramic views of the island and sea .

5. Hiring a Golf Cart

driving around Isla Mujeres in a golf cart

Another fun thing to do on Isla Mujeres? Rent a golf cart and buzz around the island !

Renting one will cost you around $45 for the day, and allows you to venture more off the beaten path , and get from the north to south ends of the island a lot quicker.

Regarding safety; there isn’t a lot of traffic on the island. You’ll find virtually no cars but instead just taxis, some buses, scooters, and golf carts.

6. Shopping, Eating & Drinking

2 restaurants in Isla Mujeres

You’ll find the highest concentration of shops, bars and restaurants on the north side of Isla Mujeres.

This is also where the ferry arrives, which makes it easy to check out some shops and find a good place to eat, even if you are only visiting Isla Mujeres for one day.

You’ll find a lot of souvenir shops, jewelry stores, and a few liquor stores offering you tequila shots no matter what time of day you walk past.

But, there is also a great selection of restaurants. Whether you want some local tacos, a good pizza, or healthy vegan food, you’ll find a restaurant for it.

The area becomes more lively around sunset with bars filling up and loud music coming from all angles. If you’re looking for a good night out, you can surely find it here!

Travel Tips for Visiting Isla de Mujeres

The best time to visit isla mujeres.

the best time to visit Isla Mujeres

For the most consistent, hot weather you’ll want to visit Isla de Mujeres between January and April , where temperatures hover around 85°F (29°C).

If you are thinking of heading between June and October, then be aware that this time has an increased risk of wet weather due to hurricane seasons, where there is slightly more chance of an occurrence in September and October.

Overall, the best time to visit Isla Mujeres would be between November to early January. The weather is great this time of year and the high tourist season has yet to start, meaning generally lower prices for accommodation and travel.

If spotting whale sharks is on your to-do list , then the best time to visit is between May and September.

And for those who are coming to Isla Mujeres to dive , you should know that the best diving conditions around Isla Mujeres are between December and April.

My Recommendations for Visiting Isla Mujeres

travel to Isla Mujeres

Regardless of whether you are a certified scuba diver or not, I think one of the main draws of visiting Isla de Mujeres is the unique underwater museum , where you can observe over 500 statues near the coral reef.

During your day trip to Isla Mujeres you should also head to Centro and check out some of the murals along the sea walls, which have been painted by artists from all over the world.

In terms of the best beaches, I would check out Playa Lancheros for an all-rounder with some waves and local bars and restaurants nearby, and also Playa Norte for calmer waters!

Last but not least, for those who want to see more nature, head to Isla Contoy , which is located some 30km north of Isla de Mujeres. The island is one of the best places in Mexico to see nesting turtles and sea birds. If you want to combine a day trip to Isla Mujeres with a visit to Isla Contoy the best option is to book a tour that combines both .

How to Get Around Isla Mujeres

Taxis are the easiest way to get around Isla Mujeres. They are everywhere and fairly inexpensive.

2. Rent a Golf Cart

As I mentioned before, golf carts are a popular way to get around. They might end up costing a bit more than taking taxis, but they are so much fun!

You can rent golf carts by the hour or for one or several days. There are several rental locations close to the ferry terminal and prices are the same at all locations.

3. Rent a Bicycle

The island is small enough to easily explore by bicycle.

Several places on Avenida Rueda Medina rent bicycles, but make sure you get one that’s in good shape.

Booking an Isla Mujeres Tour

an Isla Mujeres tour by catamaran

As I said at the start of this article, the easiest way to plan a day trip to Isla Mujeres is by booking a tour.

Depending on what you want your Isla Mujeres day trip to look like, there are some pros and cons to booking an organized tour:

Pros of Booking an Isla Mujeres Tour

  • Everything is organized for you
  • Most tours pick you up from your hotel
  • You get to spend time on a beautiful boat
  • You get to explore some of the best snorkeling spots
  • You can combine a visit to Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy
  • Most tours offer snorkeling equipment, food, and an open bar

Cons of Booking an Isla Mujeres Tour

  • Your schedule is fixed
  • You have limited time to actually explore the island

Which Isla Mujeres Tour to Book

Depending on your interests, there are a few different Isla Mujeres Tours you can book:

  • A Full-Day Catamaran Tour On this tour you’ll spend most of the day sailing on a beautiful catamaran, taking you to different idyllic locations. You’ll be able to swim, snorkel, enjoy a delicious lunch, and a beautiful beach.
  • A Fun Catamaran Tour & Island Visit This fun double-decker catamaran takes you to a great snorkeling spot as well, but unlike the first option, it offers more time on Isla Mujeres to actually explore the island. Breakfast and lunch are served on the boat and you can enjoy unlimited drinks because they offer an open bar on board!
  • A Speedboat Tour to Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy This tour takes you snorkeling and lets you explore both Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy. If you want to see as much as possible in one day, then this might be the perfect Isla Mujeres day trip for you.

The Perfect Isla Mujeres Day Trip

And that’s all from this guide on visiting Isla Mujeres!

Having read this article, you should now have a better idea about what there is to see and do on Isla Mujeres, how to get there from mainland Mexico, and the best time to visit.

Isla Mujeres is a beautiful, lively, and affordable destination. And although it’s a perfect day trip, it’s also definitely worth spending more than a day here.

If you do decide to stay longer, there’s a wide range of hotels, resorts, and rental apartments on the island. And, if you were ever thinking about trying scuba diving, definitely consider starting on Isla Mujeres!

And if you love Mexican Caribbean islands, Holbox Island, which is listed as one of the best Caribbean islands , is also worth checking out.

If you’re staying in Cancun and are looking for more things to do in the area, this is a list of Cancun’s best day trips .

There are three ways to get from Cancun to Isla Mujeres- take the ferry, charter a private yacht, or book a tour. There are advantages to each option, so below we will explain them to you so you can decide what is best for you.

1. Take the Ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres

Taking the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres is an easy and comfortable option. Taking the ferry gives you the freedom to explore Isla Mujeres on your own, and there are constant crossings during the day.

The ferries are all modern, fast, and comfortable. They have air conditioning and even sell snacks and beverages.

🏆 Choosing the Best Ferry Terminal – Ultramar vs Xcaret

👉🏽 ultramar.

There are two ferry companies that run boats between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, Ultramar, and the newest one, Xcaret Xailing.

The Ultramar boats leave from three different locations: Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas, and Playa Caracol.

Puerto Juarez is located just to the north of downtown Cancun and its terminal with the most frequent schedule.

Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol are located in the hotel zone at kilometers 6.5 and 9.5 respectively.

Ultramar boats leave from the Puerto Juarez locations every half hour from 5:30 am until 11 pm, with the last return to Puerto Juarez leaving Isla Mujeres at 12:00 am.

The ferries that leave from Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol have a much more limited schedule, with boats leaving Playa Tortugas every hour from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

There are even fewer departures from Playa Caracol. If you plan to use that dock, make sure to look up the current schedule online before planning your day.

Also keep in mind that if you have your own car, the Ferry in Puerto Juarez has a large and convenient parking lot right in front, while the other Ultramar Terminals don’t have much parking space.

👉🏽 XCARET XAILING

Xcaret Xailing ferry boats leave from El Embarcado Isla Mujeres at kilometer 4.5 in the Cancun hotel zone.

They have boats leaving every hour starting at 10:00 am with the last departure to Isla Mujeres at 7:00 pm.

There are return trips from Isla Mujeres every hour until 8:00 pm. Xcaret Xailing ferry ticket includes admission to the Scenic Tower of Cancun.

The Scenic Tower is located at El Embarcado Isla Mujeres and is an 80-meter (260-foot) tower that rotates 360 degrees so you can get amazing views, and photos, of the Cancun area.

At the Xcaret Xailing you can also find great parking facilities as well.

Playa Norte aerial view

👉🏽 ULTRAMAR vs XCARET

Both ferry companies have good safety records and clean and well-maintained boats. Ultramar boats leaving from the Puerto Juarez dock cost less than ferries leaving from the hotel zone.

If you are staying in downtown Cancun , or are comfortable using public transportation or a taxi, you can leave from Puerto Juarez.

Also, if you want to go early in the morning or come back later, you will need to use that dock. If you are staying in the hotel zone , it might be worth it to you to pay a few dollars extra to get on the Xcaret Ferry, near your hotel.

You should pick your ferry based on convenience for your day trip . Both ferry companies offer air-conditioned interiors, and outdoor seating, and sell refreshments on the boat.

They both sell open tickets, meaning you can show up and board whatever ferry you want.

Just remember, during the busy season, the ferries can fill up, so you will need to give yourself time to board and get a seat.

The great thing is that you do not have to commit to a schedule when purchasing your tickets.

✔️ How to get from Cancun airport to Puerto Juarez?

If you are staying on Isla Mujeres, you will want to go directly from the airport to Puerto Juarez to cross to Isla Mujeres. Once you land in Cancun, there are a few different ways you can make your way to the ferry dock.

👉🏽 Private airport Shuttle (Fastest)

The first, and fastest, option is to pre-book a private airport shuttle to take you to Puerto Juarez. Private shuttles cost around $35 dollars for up to 4 people.

Cancun Airport Transportation is my favorite company ever and I would never use any other. They are professional and friendly at the same time and one of the most affordable among private service companies. ► BOOK YOUR TRANSFER HERE

👉🏽 Public transport (Cheapest)

If you want to save a bit of money, you can book a shared shuttle from the airport to Puerto Juarez.

The option is to take the public ADO bus from the airport to downtown Cancun and then take a collective or taxi to Puerto Juarez.

The ADO bus from the airport to downtown will cost you around $9 and then a taxi ride will cost around 150 pesos.

If you do not want to take the public bus, you should book your private airport shuttle in advance.

I would not recommend airport taxis as they are known for quoting rides at really high rates.

📌 Cancun to Isla Mujeres Ferry Schedule

It is always a good idea to check the current ferry schedule online before planning your trip to Isla Mujeres.

The schedules can change, but the companies are good about posting changes on their websites and social media.

The Ultramar ferries that leave Puerto Juarez have the most daily crossings. The first boat departs Puerto Juarez at 5:30 am and there are crossings every half hour until 6:00 pm.

From 6:00 pm there are crossings every hour until 11:00 pm.

The last boat that returns to Cancun from Isla Mujeres leaves at 12:00 am. The Ultramar boats that leave from the hotel zone have more limited departures.

The first boat leaves Playa Tortugas at 9:00 am with departures until 5:15 pm. Boats from Playa Caracol start at 10:30 until 5:30.

Xcaret Xailing has departures every hour starting at 9:00 am until 7:00 pm, except there is no crossing at 3:00 pm.

💰 Cost of the Ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres

The Ultramar ferries that leave Puerto Juarez cost around $10 per person in each direction.

You will pay a bit more to leave from the hotel zone, with ferries costing about $15 per person in each direction.

If you take the Ultramar ferry from Playa Caracol you will also need to pay an extra docking fee that is not included in your ferry price.

These prices are for adults. There is a discounted price for children who are under 1.20 meters tall (3.9 feet). Infants under 1 year old ride for free, but need a boarding pass from the ticket counter.

Quintana Roo residents with proper ID get a discounted rate on ferries that leave from Puerto Juarez.

Aerial view of Marina Port in Isla Mujeres

🕒 How long is the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres?

The ferry takes around 20- 30 minutes to cross from Cancun to Isla Mujeres. Puerto Juarez is closer to Isla Mujeres, so the ride will be a bit shorter.

If you leave from the hotel zone, you will have a slightly longer ferry ride.

You can sit back, relax, and enjoy great views of the turquoise water and coast while cruising to Isla Mujeres. It’s so blue, it’s hypnotic and it never stops mesmerizing me.

2. Book a Private Yacht from Cancun to Isla Mujeres

If you want to move completely on your own schedule, you can charter a private yacht to take you from Cancun to Isla Mujeres.

Obviously, this is the most expensive option, but you do not need to think of it as strictly transportation.

Depending on the yacht you charter, the entire day will be a tour experience. Many yachts offer snorkeling and drinks and snacks as part of the package.

Booking a private yacht is not in everyone’s budget, but if you can afford it, it is a luxurious and fun way to get to Isla Mujeres. If you are traveling with a larger group, it might be more affordable than you think.

Your tour operator will be able to tell you exactly how many people you can bring on the private boat.

As always, when you book a private boat, make sure that they have all the proper licensing and insurance.

Check the weather and wind conditions before booking a private yacht. Smaller boats will move more in the water, and if you have people who are prone to seasickness this might not be the best option for them.

About this trip

The Whale Shark tour leaves daily in the morning and is, of course, reliant upon the weather.

Scuba diving with whale sharks is prohibited by the Mexican government. All tours are snorkeling only!

An experience you will never forget!

Please make sure to reserve your space since the numbers available are limited!

The Whale Shark tour leaves daily in the early mornings and is, of course, reliant upon the weather. Scuba diving with whale sharks is prohibited by the Mexican government. All tours are snorkeling only! Here is some general information about the tour and the booking procedures:

Included are

  • Snorkel equipment and life jacket
  • 2 immersions with the whale sharks if the number of sighted whale sharks is enough; otherwise, it is just sightseeing (see “Rules for whale shark tours”)
  • Water and soft drinks
  • a final stop to relax at Playa Norte with some freshly prepared ceviche for lunch

Tour details

You will head north of Isla Mujeres to the Caribbean Sea. The travel time to the Whale Shark area is around 1 hour, but remember you will be on a safari. We never know where they are, so we must search for them while we are on the way! Always keep your eyes wide open!

Once on the boat, you will receive a life vest, mask, snorkel, and fins. The life vest is mandatory while the boat moves and during the water activities.

As soon as they are found, the group needs to get ready. Two people and one guide will jump into the water to swim with the whale shark. It is absolutely not allowed to touch a whale shark! When you touch a whale shark, you disturb its natural protection and transmit bacteria from the land to a sea animal. Whale sharks don’t have any defenses against our bacteria and can get very sick of it.

You can be in the water for approximately 20 seconds to 5 minutes, but that depends on you! By rule, we have 2 jumps for each couple, so paying attention to all the information is important so you can enjoy your jumps as much as possible.

After all the couples finish their rounds, the boat returns to Isla Mujeres. There is an optional stop for snorkeling at the reef and lunch at Playa Norte.

Rules for whale shark tours

Please be aware that we will visit a protected area in a Natural Park.

This area has rules that we need to follow.

  • Touching the whale sharks is absolutely forbidden.
  • Jumps are made by couples (2 people) + 1 guide.
  • There is a maximum of 2 jumps per couple.
  • Please keep the distance from the whale shark. 2 meters from the front area, \ 5 meters from the tail. They swim, moving the tail from one side to the other, and if they accidentally hit us, it is really hard.
  • NO sunscreen is allowed in the area . They are filter feeders, and these products are made of oils. When we go in the water, they get washed away, staying on the surface where they come to feed themselves. You can do it before entering the boat if you would like to apply some (only Biodegradable ones) on your face and hands, which are usually the most unprotected areas. For the rest of your body, please cover it with t-shirts, towels, pareos, huts, etc.
  • You are only allowed in the water when the number of whale sharks sighted is more than 5.
  • If you see at least one shark, it is considered a successful sighting. The Mexican government has this rule for all tour operators and the protection of the animals.
  • You are not allowed to bring any alcohol on the boat.
  • You will have to be using a life vest while in the water. There are no exceptions.

Please avoid using any sunscreen! We recommend wearing a long-sleeved shirt as protection against the sun or, if necessary, only biodegradable sunscreen, and this only before entering the boat.

Once you have entered the boat, the use of any kind of sunscreen is prohibited .

This is a government rule for the protection and health of the animals.

There are no tours on the 30th of every month.

What’s included

  • Food and Drinks Fruit, Sandwich and Soft Drinks
  • Equipment Snorkel gear and a mandatory lifevest
