WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

“Awesome as usual, was hoping to show my partner the sea-breakers and Portland harbour, but luckily the sea was choppy there, so done a different route, which turned out better, went out to the old cruiser off Bowleaze cove, and even saw some dolphins, so we went around the cruise ship twice, which made her very happy, so win-win. Everyone on the boat enjoyed it.”

Absolutely fantastic experience! Boat is comfortable and you have lots of space. It goes pretty fast which I loved as I like the sea spray 😁 they look for dolphins and I was over the moon to find them. They stop the boat for you so you can stand up and watch them. Amazing experience and worth every penny! (In my opinion it’s really good value and I would pay more!) thanks crew!

Amanda Holly

We had a fabulous trip out this evening for a birthday treat! Crew were friendly and it was a great experience for all the family. Would definitely recommend to others! Go enjoy the dolphins 🐬 and admire the size of the 🚢 whilst they’re here in Weymouth!

Anabel Legg

Absolutely amazing cruise ship and wildlife tour. The rib “Buck” is so comfy and has the added bonus of an amazing sound system. We got to see the cruise ships up close and we’re lucky to see both dolphins. As soon as the engine stopped we knew they were close, and there they were! it was just perfect. Thank you to Ben, Laura, Storm and all the team. Best day. Highly recommend

Boat Trips and Best Places on Shore to View Weymouths Cruise Ships at Anchor

Keep a look out for our friendly local dolphins and seals as well they'll often take interest in the boat trips.

boat cruise weymouth

Share this page with friends ...

Weymouth Bay has always offered a safe anchorage to vessels of all sizes due to being sheltered from westerly storms by Portland and the Chesil Beach. Not though since the days when the Royal Navy was based in Portland have so many huge ships been seen at anchor relatively close to the shore.

Covid-19 has caused this, with cruise ships not being able to operate and port fees being a huge expense anywhere between 5 and 10 beautiful cruise liners have been seen at anchor in Weymouth Bay on a daily basis. Liners from P and O, Carnival and other operators have been here but without a doubt, the stars of the show have been the magnificent ocean liners of the Cunard fleet, Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth that have visited regularly

The ships can be viewed from just about any part of the beach in Weymouth but for the best views and photo opportunities here are some of our favourite places to view them from. Better still why not get out on the water with one of these boat operators that offer trips out to see the ships up close and personal.

How To View The Cruise Ships From The Sea

Where To View The Cruise Ships From The Shore

The nothe fort.

Looking out across Weymouth Harbour across Weymouth Bay towards Bowleaze Cove, Osmington and the white cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, Weymouth’s Nothe Fort offers one of the most spectacular views of the Weymouth Bay cruise ship fleet.

Looking down from the ramparts of the fort gives a totally different perspective of the beautiful ships than can be had from sea level and dependant on the tides and anchor points you’ll be treated either to beautiful panoramic view when the ships are at anchor off Bowleaze or Osmington or a spectacularly close view of these hotels of the sea when at anchor on the Portland Harbour side of the bay.

The Nothe Fort now has a lovely calm and peaceful viewing terrace beneath the ramparts where although the viewpoint is a little lower it still looks out over the bay and is accessible from the Fort Cafe so you can sit back with a drink or snack and enjoy the scene.

Cruise ships viewed from Cafe Oasis Overcombe Beach weymouth

Cafe Oasis at the far end of the Preston Beach wall is situated right on Overcombe Beach. During the current period of Covid-19 lockdown all of their tables are actually on the beach when makes for an amazing experience viewing the cruise ships in the bay as it’s normally the side of the bay they anchor at.

Overcombe Beach some good photo opportunities with the added bonus of windsurfers and kite surfers on windy days and occasionally the surprising sight of a parasail flying overhead after taking off from the hill above Bowleaze Cove.

It’s a pleasant walk of around 20 to 30 minutes from central Weymouth along the sea wall to Cafe Oasis but for those who prefer to drive the cafe has it’s own pay and display car park.

The Nothe Gardens and Newtons Cove

Situated on the south side of Weymouth Harbour the Nothe Gardens and Newtons Cove is a great place for a picnic and has some great views across the bay towards the Jurassic Coast and Cruise Ship fleet. There have even been reports of some of our friendly local dolphins being seen from the shore when playing in the cove.

The Coast Path Between Bowleaze Cove and Osmington

Most days the closest you’ll get to the ships will be from the coast path that runs from Bowleaze Cove to Osmington Mills. Take care the cliffs are prone to landslip so please observe precautionary signs and don’t venture too close to the cliff ledge.

The path can be picked up at Bowleaze at the end of Bowleaze Coveway behind Fantasy Island Fun Park

Bowleaze Cove

Bowleaze Cove is probably the best beach to see the cruise ships from if you want all the fun of a day on the beach coupled with great views of the vessels at anchor.

There’s a car park here plus free on road parking, but you’ll need to get there early to nab a space and plenty of fun for all the family at Fantasy Island Fun Park situated immediately behind the beach. There’s also a superb restaurant where you can dine and view a great vista at any time of the day but particularly awesome in the evening.

What happened on D-Day and why is it so important?

Free boat tours offered as part of d-day anniversary.

FREE boat tours are being offered as part of the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Weymouth Town Council is teaming up with Coastline Cruises to offer free boat trips from Weymouth to Portland on four dates in June highlighting the crucial role this region played in the D-Day operations during the Second World War.

To mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the free boat tours are available for Weymouth residents living in the DT3 and DT4 postcode, subject to availability and will be offered first come first served.

The return trips will depart from Weymouth Harbour, providing local people with an opportunity to reflect on the significance of D-Day while enjoying the picturesque coastal scenery.

The cruises will take place on June 6, 7, 8 and 9, with multiple departures throughout to accommodate as many participants as possible.

Weymouth Mayor Cllr Jon Orrell said: “We are delighted to team up with Coastline Cruises to offer free boat trips discovering more about the role Weymouth and Portland harbours played in D-Day, which served as a crucial embarkation point for the Allied / US troops heading to Normandy."

Kevin Jones from Coastline Cruises said: "We are honoured to be making the MV My Girl available to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Operation Overlord D-Day.

"As part of this special occasion, Coastline Cruises is offering locals a complimentary return boat cruise from Weymouth to Portland.

"My Girl provided vital military service during the Second World War and will provide an exceptional experience for passengers as they journey to Portland.

"By offering these free cruises, we hope to provide a memorable experience for the local community while honouring the legacy of those who participated in D-Day."

The cruises will depart from the harbour near Brewers Quay in Weymouth at 9am, 10.45am, 12.45pm and 2.45pm on Thursday, June 6.

On June 7, 8 and 9 the cruises will depart at 10.30am, 12.30pm, 2.30pm.

The cruises will depart from Crabbers Wharf, Castletown on Portland at 1.45pm and 4pm on Thursday, June 6.

On June 7,8 and 9, they will depart from Portland at 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

To book one of the free tours, email [email protected] giving your preferred and alternative departure and return date and times along with your home postcode.

Passengers must bring proof of address on the day of the tour (a driver's licence for example).

Demand for the free cruises to commemorate D-Day 80 has been so popular that all the four dates are now fully booked.

Kevin at Coastline Cruises, who we are partnering with to provide the trips, said: “I am thrilled by the overwhelming response to the D-Day 80 anniversary offer. The incredible interest demonstrated by Weymouth residents highlights the enduring significance of this historic day in our community. We are blown away by the response and are deeply appreciative of the enthusiasm shown by Weymouth residents."

He fell ill on a cruise. Before he boarded the rescue boat, they handed him the bill.

By Bram Sable-Smith

Updated on: May 27, 2024 / 9:41 AM EDT / KFF Health News

Vincent Wasney and his fiancée, Sarah Eberlein, had never visited the ocean. They'd never even been on a plane. But when they bought their first home in Saginaw, Michigan, in 2018, their real estate agent gifted them tickets for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

After two years of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, they set sail in December 2022.

The couple chose a cruise destined for the Bahamas in part because it included a trip to CocoCay, a private island accessible to Royal Caribbean passengers that featured a water park, balloon rides and an excursion swimming with pigs.

It was on that day on CocoCay when Wasney, 31, started feeling off, he said.

The next morning, as the couple made plans in their cabin for the last full day of the trip, Wasney made a pained noise. Eberlein saw him having a seizure in bed, with blood coming out of his mouth from biting his tongue. She opened their door to find help and happened upon another guest, who roused his wife, an emergency room physician.

Wasney was able to climb into a wheelchair brought by the ship's medical crew to take him down to the medical facility, where he was given anticonvulsants and fluids and monitored before being released.

Wasney had had seizures in the past, starting about 10 years ago, but it had been a while since his last one. Imaging back then showed no tumors, and doctors concluded he was likely epileptic, he said. He took medicine initially, but after two years without another seizure, he said, his doctors took him off the medicine to avoid liver damage.

may-botm-cruise-01.jpg

Wasney had a second seizure on the ship a few hours later, back in his cabin. This time he stopped breathing, and Eberlein remembered his lips being so purple, they almost looked black. Again, she ran to find help but, in her haste, locked herself out. By the time the ship's medical team got into the cabin, Wasney was breathing again but had broken blood vessels along his chest and neck that he later said resembled tiger stripes.

Wasney was in the ship's medical center when he had a third seizure — a grand mal, which typically causes a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions. By then, the ship was close enough to port that Wasney could be evacuated by rescue boat. He was put on a stretcher to be lowered by ropes off the side of the ship, with Eberlein climbing down a rope ladder to join him.

But before they disembarked, the bill came.

The Patient: Vincent Wasney, 31, who was uninsured at the time.

Medical Services: General and enhanced observation, a blood test, anticonvulsant medicine, and a fee for services performed outside the medical facility.

Service Provider: Independence of the Seas Medical Center, the on-ship medical facility on the cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International .

Total Bill: $2,500.22.

What Gives: As part of Royal Caribbean's guest terms , cruise passengers "agree to pay in full" all expenses incurred on board by the end of the cruise, including those related to medical care. In addition, Royal Caribbean does not accept "land-based" health insurance plans.

Wasney said he was surprised to learn that, along with other charges like wireless internet, Royal Caribbean required he pay his medical bills before exiting the ship — even though he was being evacuated urgently.

"Are we being held hostage at this point?" Eberlein remembered asking. "Because, obviously, if he's had three seizures in 10 hours, it's an issue."

Wasney said he has little memory of being on the ship after his first seizure — seizures often leave victims groggy and disoriented for a few hours afterward.

But he certainly remembers being shown a bill, the bulk of which was the $2,500.22 in medical charges, while waiting for the rescue boat.

Still groggy, Wasney recalled saying he couldn't afford that and a cruise employee responding: "How much can you pay?"

They drained their bank accounts, including money saved for their next house payment, and maxed out Wasney's credit card but were still about $1,000 short, he said.

Ultimately, they were allowed to leave the ship. He later learned his card was overdrafted to cover the shortfall, he said. Once on land, in Florida, Wasney was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he incurred thousands of dollars more in medical expenses.

He still isn't entirely sure what caused the seizures.

On the ship he was told it could have been extreme dehydration — and he said he does remember being extra thirsty on CocoCay. He also has mused whether trying escargot for the first time the night before could have played a role. Eberlein's mother is convinced the episode was connected to swimming with pigs, he said. And not to be discounted, Eberlein accidentally broke a pocket mirror three days before their trip.

Wasney, who works in a stone shop, was uninsured when they set sail. He said that one month before they embarked on their voyage, he finally felt he could afford the health plan offered through his employer and signed up, but the plan didn't start until January 2023, after their return.

They also lacked travel insurance. As inexperienced travelers, Wasney said, they thought it was for lost luggage and canceled trips, not unexpected medical expenses. And because the cruise was a gift, they were never prompted to buy coverage, which often happens when tickets are purchased.

may-botm-cruise-04.jpg

The Resolution: Wasney said the couple returned to Saginaw with essentially no money in their bank account, several thousand dollars of medical debt, and no idea how they would cover their mortgage payment. Because he was uninsured at the time of the cruise, Wasney did not try to collect reimbursement for the cruise bill from his new health plan when his coverage began weeks later.

The couple set up payment plans to cover the medical bills for Wasney's care after leaving the ship: one each with two doctors he saw at Broward Health, who billed separately from the hospital, and one with the ambulance company. He also made payments on a bill with Broward Health itself. Those plans do not charge interest.

But Broward Health said Wasney missed two payments to the hospital, and that bill was ultimately sent to collections.

In a statement, Broward Health spokesperson Nina Levine said Wasney's bill was reduced by 73% because he was uninsured.

"We do everything in our power to provide the best care with the least financial impact, but also cannot stress enough the importance of taking advantage of private and Affordable Care Act health insurance plans, as well as travel insurance, to lower risks associated with unplanned medical issues," she said.

The couple was able to make their house payment with $2,690 they raised through a GoFundMe campaign that Wasney set up. Wasney said a lot of that help came from family as well as friends he met playing disc golf, a sport he picked up during the pandemic.

"A bunch of people came through for us," Wasney said, still moved to tears by the generosity. "But there's still the hospital bill."

The Takeaway: Billing practices differ by cruise line, but Joe Scott , chair of the cruise ship medicine section of the American College of Emergency Physicians, said medical charges are typically added to a cruise passenger's onboard account, which must be paid before leaving the ship. Individuals can then submit receipts to their insurers for possible reimbursement.

He recommended that those planning to take a cruise purchase travel insurance that specifically covers their trips. "This will facilitate reimbursement if they do incur charges and potentially cover a costly medical evacuation if needed," Scott said.

Royal Caribbean suggests that passengers who receive onboard care submit their paid bills to their health insurer for possible reimbursement. Many health plans do not cover medical services received on cruise ships, however. Medicare will sometimes cover medically necessary health care services on cruise ships, but not if the ship is more than six hours away from a U.S. port.

Travel insurance can be designed to address lots of out-of-town mishaps , like lost baggage or even transportation and lodging for a loved one to visit if a traveler is hospitalized.

Travel medical insurance, as well as plans that offer "emergency evacuation and repatriation," are two types that can specifically assist with medical emergencies. Such plans can be purchased individually. Credit cards may offer travel medical insurance among their benefits, as well.

But travel insurance plans come with limitations. For instance, they may not cover care associated with preexisting conditions or what the plans consider "risky" activities, such as rock climbing. Some plans also require that travelers file first with their primary health insurance before seeking reimbursement from travel insurance.

As with other insurance, be sure to read the fine print and understand how reimbursement works.

Wasney said that's what they plan to do before their next Royal Caribbean cruise. They'd like to go back to the Bahamas on basically the same trip, he said — there's a lot about CocoCay they didn't get to explore.

Carnival cruise ship rescues 25 people stranded off the coast of Mexico

boat cruise weymouth

A Carnival Cruise Line ship responded to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard and rescued 25 people stranded in a small boat off the coast of Mexico, the company announced Saturday.

The 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance had left Long Beach, California, on Friday and was heading toward Ensenada Mexico for a three-day sailing when the cruise ship's officers were informed by the Coast Guard "about a distress call involving a small vessel," a news release said.

The ship immediately routed toward the location of the vessel, provided by the USCG, and "quickly" rescued all 25 people on board, including three children, the company said.

The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

The rescued group was welcomed onto the cruise ship and given food, water, and medical assistance. Carnival coordinated with the Coast Guard to hand off the group.

The couple chose a cruise destined for the Bahamas in part because it included a trip to CocoCay, a private island accessible to Royal Caribbean passengers that featured a water park, balloon rides, and an excursion swimming with pigs.

Bill of the Month is a crowdsourced investigation by KFF Health News and NPR that dissects and explains medical bills. Do you have an interesting medical bill you want to share with us? Tell us about it !

Vincent had had seizures in the past, starting about ten years ago, but it had been a while since his last one. Imaging back then showed no tumors, and doctors concluded he was likely epileptic, he said. He took medicine initially, but after two years without another seizure, he said his doctors took him off the medicine to avoid liver damage.

A mom's $97,000 question: How was an air-ambulance ride not medically necessary?

Shots - Health News

A mom's $97,000 question: how was an air-ambulance ride not medically necessary.

Royal Caribbean International did not respond to multiple inquiries from KFF Health News.

When a quick telehealth visit yields multiple surprises beyond a big bill

When a quick telehealth visit yields multiple surprises beyond a big bill

Medicare will sometimes cover medically necessary health care services on cruise ships, but not if the ship is more than six hours away from a U.S. port.

Travel insurance can be designed to address lots of out-of-town mishaps, like lost baggage or even transportation and lodging for a loved one to visit if a traveler is hospitalized.

What do our cruise ship boat tours involve?

From our mooring outside Bennetts fish and chips in Weymouth harbour we take a gentle steam out of the harbour. From the comfort of our large and spacious vessel you can admire the beauty of our historic harbourside before we emerge into the bay. After a leisurely cruise out to the vessels, we will head out round the cruise ships. Whilst maintaining a safe distance we steam around each ship, providing plenty of photo opportunities. The cruise ships come and go every couple of days as they return to Southampton for supplies and fuel. This means the vessels and number of vessels change regularly. Over the course of the last few months we have had ships from P&O, Tui, Carnival and Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria.

If there are only 1 or 2 cruise ships we will head over to Durdle Door and steam along the beautiful Jurassic Coastline.

P&O Cruises to retire its brand in Australia, fold operations into Carnival Cruise Line

A large white cruise ship is parked at a berth.

P&O Cruises Australia has announced its fleet will soon be sailing to its final berth, ceasing its operations in 2025 after more than 90 years on the water.

The Australian travel brand will fold its operations into parent company Carnival Cruise Line from March 2025.

P&O's Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships and workforce will be rebranded and transferred to the Carnival Cruise Line fleet, while the Pacific Explorer, previously known as the Dawn Princess, will be retired.

Passengers set to cruise in 2024 will not be affected, while customers who had cruises booked on the Pacific Explorer after March 2, 2025 will have the option of a refund or credit for Carnival with extra onboard spending money.

It is the end of an era for the popular brand, which first sailed from Sydney on December 23, 1932, on a seven-day itinerary calling at Brisbane and Norfolk Island.

The company's first permanent ship in Australia, the Fairstar — heavily promoted as "the fun ship" — was part of the fleet for nine years until 1997.

P&O Cruises Australia issued its surprise notice to customers on Tuesday.

"As a result, all itineraries on Pacific Explorer scheduled to sail after 2nd March 2025 are being cancelled," it said.

"If you are booked on one of these itineraries you will be contacted by guest services in the coming days with refund details.

"We are all immensely proud of P&O Cruises Australia's 90-year heritage of dedicated operations in the region, and Carnival Cruise Line are honoured to carry forward its storied legacy and continue to deliver the same onboard experiences and itineraries."

Crews on the Pacific Explorer were expected to be redeployed to other ships, but a small number of workers in the P&O Australia head office would lose their jobs, a spokeswoman said.

Acting P&O Cruises Australia and Carnival Australia lead Peter Little will be retained under the new title of country manager.

The side of a large white cruise ship with a skyscraper in the background.

Carnival Cruise chief executive Josh Weinstein hailed P&O Cruises as a storied brand with an amazing team and lauded its accomplishments in Australia and the broader region.

"However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach," he said.

The Carnival brand will see its fleet boosted by eight ships after also acquiring vessels from sister line Costa Cruises and ordering new ships to come into operation in 2027 and 2028.

Under the changes, Carnival will continue to be the largest cruise operator in the region with 19 ships, representing almost 60 per cent of the market.

The P&O ships will have technology upgrades, including an ordering app and loyalty program, but will retain the "familiar feel and much of the same experiences" for Australian guests, Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy said.

Who owns P&O Cruises?

P&O Cruises is owned by Carnival Corporation & plc.

Carnival Corporation & plc owns a number of different brands including Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises.

What does P&O stand for?

The initials P and O stand for "Peninsular and Oriental", an abbreviation of The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company.
