BMW 320d EfficientDynamics

We drive the eco-special 3 series - are the efficiency gains are worth the compromises on options and power.

BMW 320d EfficientDynamics front tracking

5.0 out of 5

carwow logo

Priced identically to the 320d SE, the BMW 3 Series ED will be the pick of the range for those doing high mileages. If you want sporty alloys, you’ll have to go for the regular 320d, while the gains in efficiency over the standard model are marginal. But they add up to lower fuel and tax bills, plus there’s the bonus that the ED drives as well as any 3 Series.

This is the most efficient BMW 3 Series yet. The new EfficientDynamics model builds on the success of its predecessor, which was the biggest-selling 3 Series. Like that car, it’s based on the 320d, but boasts even better fuel economy and CO2 emissions. It’s exactly the same price as the 320d SE, too. So is there a catch?

Outside, there’s very little to distinguish the EfficientDynamics from other 3 Series trims. It does come with unique 16-inch alloys, wearing low-rolling-resistance tyres, whereas the SE features sportier 17-inch wheels.

Yet unlike other models in the line-up, there’s no option to upgrade to bigger wheels. Also, the EfficientDynamics cannot be specified in M Sport trim. Inside, the ED is identical to the 3 Series SE, which means no standard leather trim.

Otherwise, there’s enough kit, including parking sensors, cruise and climate control, Bluetooth, plus automatic lights and wipers.

There’s a leather-trimmed steering wheel as well. Overall, the cabin is quite attractive, with metal highlights, and as in other new 3 Series, it’s more spacious than before.

The EfficientDynamics model rides better than the standard car, too, thanks to the high sidewalls of its 16-inch tyres: it really does glide over most surfaces. Only ridges that span the width of the road catch it out.

Road noise is low, yet the diesel engine is always vocal, which detracts from the luxury-car feel. As ever, the 3 Series loves a twisty road, and that doesn’t change in this eco special. It has great body control and superb agility.

BMW’s familiar slick six-speed manual gearbox is standard, but the gearing has been tweaked to enhance economy. The ECO PRO driving mode increases the efficiency of the air-con system and dulls throttle response a little.

It works well – so well that you often find yourself changing up earlier than you’d expect. You can also select Sport mode, which sharpens up the throttle and steering for when the mood takes you.

In contrast with the previous generation of EfficientDynamics 3 Series, the new car can be specified with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which operates smoothly.

BMW claims the manual will return average fuel economy of 68.9mpg and emit only 109g/km of CO2. However, the standard 320d claims 61.4mpg and 120g/km, yet is 20bhp more powerful.

The 320d EfficientDynamics will save a 40 per cent taxpayer £674 a year – that’s £56 a month – in tax. And in everyday driving, the reduced power of the ED isn’t noticeable, as it produces the same amount of torque as the SE. On paper, it is slower, but the difference is marginal in the real world.

For high-mileage company-car drivers – and even some private buyers who prioritise efficiency – the ED will be a no-brainer. For others, the standard 320d is a perfectly economical and capable all-rounder that can be ordered in more desirable M Sport trim.

The Rarest Buick Ever Produced

10 most expensive new car features in 2024, the ultimate barn find this is what happens when someone discovers 300 classic cars in a barn.

The beauty of the human race is that we're always seeking to find an easier way of doing something. Take driving as an example; thanks to advancements in technology, driving is getting easier and easier.

While the idea of fully autonomous driving is shelved, for now, cars do have an element of driving themselves. We aren't giving our cars full control of their movements just yet, but they do already have plenty of responsibilities that they didn't in decades prior.

Driving aids help prevent accidents on long, boring journeys, and one of the most useful aids is adaptive cruise control.

Although adaptive cruise control has been around since the 1990s, it's only recently that car drivers have been truly reaping the benefits. That's no more evident than in the BMW 3 Series, which has the best adaptive cruise control in the business. But what makes it the best on the market?

Here's why the BMW 3 Series has the best adaptive cruise control that any driver could hope for.

RELATED: This Is Why A Blind Engineer Invented Cruise Control

What We Love About Adaptive Cruise Control

In a quest to give our feet a break while traveling on long commutes, car manufacturers created adaptive cruise control (ACC) . While normal cruise control allows a driver to maintain a speed autonomously, it doesn't consider the traffic or road conditions around. That's why ACC has become such an important feature in modern cars.

With ACC installed in your vehicle, your car will monitor its surroundings and adjust its speed to what's around. If the traffic up ahead has stopped, your adaptive cruise control will anticipate that and slow the vehicle down to prevent a collision.

Previous versions of cruise control might have simply plowed into stationary vehicles up ahead unless the driver reacted.

When using ACC, drivers can set their desired speed, and their car will do its best to maintain that speed. It will slow down or speed up depending on the traffic conditions using a radar or laser system. More advanced ACC systems include warning signals, steering assistance, lane control, and distance maintenance.

The BMW 3 Series' Adaptive Cruise Control Is The Best

Adaptive cruise control is slightly different in each car as different manufacturers offer different features. The more advanced ACC models can detect things like speed limit signs and adjust accordingly. This brings us to the best adaptive cruise control and the BMW 3 Series' combined sensory technology.

The BMW 3 Series uses ultrasonic and radar sensors along with cameras to analyze the environment outside. The ACC in the 3 Series uses 'stop and go' brake technology which is ideal for long traffic jams.

As we mentioned, the BMW 3 Series' ACC can monitor for traffic signs and interpret what the recommended speed limit is.

On top of the 'stop and go' braking, the BMW 3 Series also comes with steering and lane control assist as well as a cross-traffic alert. Throw in active side collision prevention with a lane-keeping assistant, and you can see how the 3 Series is one of the safest cars on the road.

Cheaper Rides Like The RAV4 Also Offer ACC

Not everyone wants to spend a fortune on a car with adaptive cruise control. Fortunately, there are plenty of affordable options around so we can all enjoy the benefits of ACC.

For instance, the Kia Soul comes with the option of 'smart cruise control' that includes an automatic braking system and a collision warning system. Another cheap ACC option is the Mazda 3, which can detect rear cross-traffic and keeps an eye on your blind spots.

If you're looking for something taller, the Toyota RAV4 is a larger cheap option. The RAV4 offers collision warning, 'stop and go' technology, and distance maintenance with its ACC. In truth, lots of modern cars come with ACC as standard, so it's a case of finding the ones that suit you and your budget.

Adaptive Cruise Control Has Its Pros And Cons

One of the main advantages of adaptive cruise control like the one found in the BMW 3 Series is how easy it is to use. With buttons located on the steering wheel, drivers have control right at their fingertips. These buttons allow the driver to adjust the ACC and set the speed at which they want to travel.

Once set, the ACC will keep your car in motion while maintaining a safe distance from the traffic around you. While using your ACC, your car will optimize its fuel efficiency by traveling at a constant speed.

It's also super easy to turn the cruise control off and get back in charge of your vehicle. The moment a driver touches the brakes or accelerator, the ACC automatically turns off, and you regain control. It's that simple.

Many ACC systems have their flaws, however, and some can encounter quite a few issues. Some sensors might not work as they are meant to in tricky weather conditions, which is a reason to maintain full control in such circumstances.

Apart from the weather, another drawback of ACC is the loss of concentration a driver may experience. Cars with adaptive cruise control are basically driving themselves, which means the driver can become complacent when observing the road.

If a driver becomes disengaged with what's happening on the road ahead of them, their awareness is reduced. That means if something jumps out in front of your car, it's pretty likely that you'll hit it. Despite these drawbacks, adaptive cruise control is here to stay , and it makes driving a lot easier.

Gone are those punishing commutes where your foot hurts from stopping and starting in traffic. ACC takes care of that; all you need to do is stay alert and look out for potential hazards.

bmw 320d cruise control

2004-onwards BMW 6 Series values have gradually deflated down to the bargain basement – useable ones are just four grand. Should you buy one though? If four thousand bucks is all you have, then absolutely not, because nothing is more expensive than a cheap BMW. You’ll easily put $1,000 into one every year on consumables, but what a car! Lambasted when new – mainly by devotees of the prehistoric original E24 BMW 6 Series – the ‘Bangle butt’ moaning has receded somewhat now they are the price of some cloth-trimmed BMW 320d.

The History of the BMW 6 Series

bmw 320d cruise control

Following the 2001 E65 7 Series and 2003 E60 5 Series (and E85 Z4 in 2003), the 2004 BMW 645Ci sold quite well even if the Adrian Van Hooydonk styling took a bit of getting used to. Coded E63 as a Coupe and E64 as a Convertible, the V8-powered 645Ci was the only model available at launch and was based on the E60 545i floorpan and running gear with the 333 bhp N62 V8 with all-alloy construction, double Vanos and Valvetronic, and variable length intake runners. This sat in front of either a six-speed manual gearbox or, far more commonly, the 6-speed ZF Steptronic auto. A rare option (thankfully) was the six-speed SMG with paddle shifts, interesting but a bit pointless when the auto was so good.

bmw 320d cruise control

Suspension was all-alloy including the subframes, and with Servotronic speed-related power steering, plastic front fenders, and alloy panels, the fully equipped 645Ci was certainly a big leap forward over the last big BMW Coupe, the E31 840Ci. Standard spec included iDrive with central control, 18-inch wheels, multifunction steering wheel, DSC – dynamic stability control with ABS, Park Distance Control, rain-sensing wipers, tire pressure monitoring, and Xenon headlamps with washers. Options included dechroming, 19-inch alloys, satnav, active cruise control, adaptive Xenons, Dynamic Drive (self-adjusting anti-roll bars), climate sun protection glass, electric glass panoramic roof on Coupes, dark or light wood trim, sports seats and seat heating, plus a choice of upgraded Nav systems, radios, and speakers.

Weighing in at 1,695 kilos, the E63 645Ci Coupe wasn’t massively heavy either, although the Convertible added a good 150 kilos to that. Performance was excellent, limited to 155 mph all out and capable of hitting 60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

Early 2006 saw the 645Ci replaced by the 650i. Much the same as the 645Ci, the revised car used a 4.8-liter N62 V8 with 367 bhp. For the 2008 model year, the Six was revised once more – a centrally ridged hood, 3rd generation CIC iDrive, a new auto shifter and flappy paddles on the steering wheel, plus restyled wheels, lights, bumpers, and trim with the third brake light relocated into the trunk lid.

Nearly 117,000 Coupes and over 54,000 Convertibles were built in six years – compare that with 86,000 of the original E24 6 Series or the miserable 31,000 of the 8 Series – both with much longer production runs, and the car was judged a success.

An Affordable Car Today

bmw 320d cruise control

The E63 BMW 6 Series is now a cheap car to buy by most standards, but these are complex and expensive cars to maintain, plus parts are expensive and they are not easy to work on. Many have been neglected, and because they don’t rust like the original 6 Series, a bad lot can still seem okay. They are not desirable on the used market and, as ever, clean cars with respectable owners, stamped service books, two keys, and a stack of history are the order of the day.

N62 Engine

The N62 V8 in both 4.4 liter and 4.8 forms is a superb engine when on top form, but it has its issues, and BMW techs absolutely hate them with a passion. They leak and sweat oil. The hard fixes are the rocker cover gaskets, and the real issue is the generator bracket. BMW sandwiched the generator alloy bracket between the crankcase and the two oil cooler pipes. The rubber seal hardens with age, and you get a very impressive oil leak as well as a bill for around $750 or more.

N62 Engine

When the valve stem seals are finished, the car will smoke like a chimney, and that’s an expensive job with special tools to avoid removing the cylinder heads. Then we have the coolant cross tube, an alloy front-to-back pipe with a rubber seal at each end that BMW designed to be impossible to replace until the engine is out and dismantled. A coolant drip from the water pump area is NOT the pump, it’s this pipe. Sensible fixes include an extending pipe that can be fitted once the inlet manifold is off, or a repair pipe that slides inside the original once the water pump has been removed.

Timing chains plus the Vanos and the Valvetronic system are reliable, and regular oil changes are the key.

The Transmission

bmw 320d cruise control

The standard six-speed manual box is rare, but you might want to seek one out as they never seem to go wrong and the dual-mass flywheels are long-lived. The 6-speed automatics are also good boxes, sealed for life with the Mechatronics ECU inside the box itself and the filter integral with the finned plastic oil pan. Whilst it’s nice to see bills for maintenance – oil and pan/filter and the rubber seal between the valve block and the transmission casing – don’t fret if it’s original and still working. You can have the oil and filter changed if you like or take the view that a good used gearbox isn’t very expensive. Check the box for oil leaks and correct them but there’s no point in going mad.

The SMG box is worth avoiding. It’s not a bad unit, but any repairs will be expensive and used parts almost non-existent. A conversion to manual is possible but again, pricey. Driveshafts and differentials are strong, and most of the driveline is shared with the E60 5 Series.

Suspension, Brakes and Steering

bmw 320d cruise control

The 6 Series, like it did with the E24, is based on a contemporary 5 Series platform with 5 Series suspension, steering, and brakes. Unlike equivalent Mercedes with steel subframes, the 6 Series uses alloy, and the only problems are going to be bushes and ball joints. Use a good aftermarket supplier of suspension parts, and parts are quite cheap. Bilstein shock absorbers are about £150 a corner, so there is nothing particularly expensive to replace.

The same with brakes. The ABS control unit is reliable enough and cheap secondhand if you need one, calipers are expensive new, but rotors are around $200 a pair.

The 6 Series uses a hydraulic steering rack, and the standard servotronic version is shared with some E60 models – reckon on about £100 for a good used one, cheap as they rarely fail. The active steering version, however, is worth steering clear of if you’ll pardon the pun. A used rack is almost impossible to find and a new one about $3,000. A secondhand actuator might fix a faulty rack, but both this and the active anti-roll bars with their hydraulic motors are an indescribable price new and rare secondhand.

The wheels are an assortment of 18 or 19-inch alloys that can all be refurbished for around $100 a wheel for a simple blasting and powder coating job. Obviously, be wary of cheap tires or tire lotto where all four wheels have a different brand of tire.

The 6 Series shell is made from zinc-coated steel with alloy doors and bonnet plus reinforced plastic front fenders, bumpers, and trunk lid. It’s very well made so rust isn’t a problem, but you can find alloy corrosion by the top alloy door trim strip. The convertible roof is reliable enough, but the plastic gears in the rear roof latches can strip – you can buy replacement brass gears for £20 though. E64 Convertibles that sit outside all year round can be prone to water ingress leading to wet soundproofing and destroyed electrical modules under the carpets – if the car is condensating inside (wet windows), be very wary. On all cars, check the carpets in the rear and if wet, the front screen drains under the pollen filters will be blocked as well as the rear ones on the convertible.

bmw 320d cruise control

Until September 2005 build date, the BMW 6 Series used a conventional key, replacing it with the later fob remote that slots into a revolving socket on the steering column. This later system had a module and a counter, and at some point, this will need clearing and resetting to zero.

As for electrical problems, the battery is critical on these – any bits not working, and you’re well advised to do a complete load test that can take 15 to 45 minutes just so you know what the battery has for CCA (cold cranking amps). A lot of ‘good’ batteries fail this test, and the 6 Series must have the correct-sized battery, fighting fit, and correctly coded to the car if required. A new battery has to be registered via OBD; otherwise, the IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) will think it is charging an old battery.

If it is an AGM battery (later BMWs with auto stop-start), you need a VARTA H15 105ah (or 95ah depends on what’s coded in the car). If it is a normal battery, you need a VARTA I1 110ah. If you don’t use the car much, invest in a good battery maintenance charger. A bad generator voltage regulator can cause problems, and what an absolute joy they are to replace on the V8.

As for the interior trim, it’s all good solid stuff, and the leather is proper as well. Make sure the iDrive works as it should, but you may find that the TV function and sat nav are a bit rubbish by modern standards. The TV may well be useless, but the nav should still work with a decent disc fitted.

  • The ACC system in the BMW 3 Series offers customizable settings, allowing drivers to adjust parameters such as desired following distance and acceleration behavior according to their preferences.
  • It is important to note that while Adaptive Cruise Control can greatly assist drivers, it should not replace attentive driving. Drivers must remain alert and ready to take control of the vehicle at any time.

If you’re a fan of luxury cars and have been eyeing the BMW 3 Series, you’ve probably heard about its impressive features and sleek design. But one burning question might be on your mind: does the BMW 3 Series have Adaptive Cruise Control? Picture this: cruising down the highway, effortlessly maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, all while enjoying the smooth ride and elegance that BMW is known for. In this article, we’ll delve into the world of Adaptive Cruise Control and explore whether this cutting-edge technology is available in the BMW 3 Series. So buckle up and get ready to uncover the answer to this pressing question that could potentially enhance your driving experience to a whole new level.

The introduction of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) in the BMW 3 Series enhances the driving experience by maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. ACC combines radar and camera sensors to monitor the road and automatically adjusts the car’s speed to match traffic flow, reducing driver fatigue and enhancing safety. Key features include precise monitoring, automatic speed adjustment, and safe distance control.

Introduction of Adaptive Cruise Control in BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series is a popular luxury sedan known for its cutting-edge technology and innovative features. One such feature is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which enhances the driving experience by maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead while cruising on highways or in heavy traffic. ACC combines radar and camera sensors to monitor the road, enabling the car to automatically adjust its speed to match the flow of traffic.

With the introduction of ACC in the BMW 3 Series, drivers can enjoy a more relaxed and comfortable driving experience. It not only reduces driver fatigue but also enhances safety by mitigating the risk of rear-end collisions. The ACC system in BMW 3 Series takes advantage of advanced technologies and sensors to provide a seamless driving experience.

Key Features:

  • Radar and camera sensors for precise monitoring
  • Automatic speed adjustment based on traffic conditions
  • Safe distance control

Radar and Camera Sensors:

The ACC system in BMW 3 Series utilizes both radar and camera sensors to monitor the road ahead. The radar sensor detects objects in front of the vehicle, including other cars, while the camera sensor identifies lane markings and traffic signs. By combining data from these sensors, the system accurately determines the position and speed of surrounding vehicles.

Automatic Speed Adjustment:

Based on information gathered from radar and camera sensors, ACC automatically adjusts the speed of the BMW 3 Series to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. If there is a slower-moving car in front, ACC will reduce speed accordingly, ensuring a smooth and controlled driving experience. Once the road clears up or if you change lanes, ACC will gradually accelerate back to the set cruising speed.

Safe Distance Control:

The ACC system in BMW 3 Series allows drivers to set a desired following distance from the vehicle ahead. This distance can be adjusted based on personal preference or specific road conditions. If the car ahead slows down or comes to a stop, ACC will apply the brakes to maintain the set safe distance. When the road clears and the car ahead starts moving again, ACC will accelerate smoothly to match its speed.

Working of Adaptive Cruise Control in BMW 3 Series

The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system in BMW 3 Series combines advanced sensors and intelligent algorithms to provide a smooth and efficient driving experience. Let’s take a closer look at how it works:

Sensor Integration:

The ACC system utilizes radar and camera sensors to gather information about the surrounding environment. The radar sensor detects objects in front of the vehicle, while the camera sensor identifies lane markings and traffic signs. These sensors work together to provide accurate data regarding the position, speed, and behavior of other vehicles on the road.

Data Processing:

Once the sensor data is collected, it is processed by an onboard computer that uses complex algorithms to analyze and interpret it. The computer calculates distances, relative speeds, and acceleration rates to determine if any adjustments need to be made.

Speed Adjustment:

If a slower-moving vehicle is detected in front of the BMW 3 Series, ACC will automatically adjust its speed by applying gentle braking or releasing throttle pressure. The system aims to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead while ensuring a comfortable driving experience for both the driver and passengers.

Intelligent Braking System:

In situations where an immediate response is required, such as when there is a sudden obstacle or the vehicle ahead stops abruptly, ACC is equipped with an intelligent braking system. It can apply full braking force to prevent a collision or reduce the severity of an impact.

User Interface:

The BMW 3 Series provides a user-friendly interface for drivers to set their desired following distance and cruising speed. The controls are easily accessible on the steering wheel or center console, allowing drivers to make adjustments according to their preferences and driving conditions.

Benefits of Adaptive Cruise Control in BMW 3 Series

The inclusion of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) in the BMW 3 Series brings several benefits to both drivers and passengers. Let’s explore some of these advantages:

Enhanced Safety:

  • ACC helps mitigate the risk of rear-end collisions by automatically adjusting the vehicle’s speed based on traffic conditions.
  • The system maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, reducing the chances of abrupt braking or acceleration.

Reduced Driver Fatigue:

  • By taking over repetitive tasks such as maintaining speed and distance, ACC allows drivers to concentrate more on the road and enjoy a less fatiguing driving experience.
  • In heavy traffic situations, where constant acceleration and braking can be tiring, ACC ensures a smoother ride by automatically adapting to traffic flow.

Improved Comfort:

  • ACC eliminates the need for constant manual adjustments of speed, enhancing comfort during long journeys or when encountering changes in traffic conditions.
  • The system provides a seamless driving experience with smooth acceleration and deceleration, reducing jerky movements often associated with manual speed control.

Variations of Adaptive Cruise Control in BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series offers different variations of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) to cater to varying customer preferences and driving needs. Here are some notable variations available:

Standard ACC:

The standard ACC in the BMW 3 Series includes features such as automatic speed adjustment, safe distance control, and sensor integration. It provides a reliable and efficient cruise control system that enhances safety and comfort during highway driving.

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function:

This advanced variation of ACC takes the capabilities further by incorporating a stop & go function. It allows the vehicle to come to a complete stop if traffic conditions require it, and then automatically resume driving when the road clears up. This feature is particularly useful in heavy traffic or urban driving scenarios.

Extended Traffic Jam Assistant:

For drivers who frequently encounter congested traffic situations, the Extended Traffic Jam Assistant takes ACC to another level. In addition to stop & go functionality, it enables semi-automated driving by providing steering assistance within specific speed limits. This feature reduces driver workload significantly during slow-moving traffic conditions.

Customization options for Adaptive Cruise Control in BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series offers various customization options for Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), allowing drivers to tailor their driving experience according to their preferences. Some customization options include:

Selectable Following Distance:

Drivers can choose their desired following distance from the vehicle ahead using the ACC settings menu. The selectable distance ranges from short to long, accommodating individual preferences and specific road conditions.

Cruise Control Speed Adjustment:

In addition to setting a desired cruising speed, users can also adjust the rate at which the vehicle accelerates or decelerates when approaching slower-moving vehicles. This customization option allows for a more personalized driving experience.

Intelligent Braking Sensitivity:

BMW 3 Series offers the ability to customize the sensitivity of the intelligent braking system in ACC. Drivers can choose between different levels of sensitivity based on their comfort level and preference for smoother or more responsive braking.

Limitations and Drawbacks of Adaptive Cruise Control in BMW 3 Series

While Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) provides numerous benefits, it is essential to be aware of its limitations and potential drawbacks. Some limitations include:

Performance in Inclement Weather:

  • In adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow, the performance of ACC may be affected due to reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces.
  • The sensors may have difficulty accurately detecting objects, potentially leading to inconsistent performance.

Risk Perception and Alertness:

  • Drivers must remain alert and vigilant while using ACC, as it does not replace the need for human judgment or awareness of the surrounding environment.
  • In certain situations, such as sudden lane changes by nearby vehicles, drivers may need to intervene quickly to ensure safety.

Tailgating Risk:

  • Although ACC maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, some drivers may still follow too closely, relying solely on the system’s capabilities.
  • This behavior can lead to tailgating situations if other drivers abruptly slow down or change lanes unexpectedly.

It is important for BMW 3 Series owners to understand these limitations and use ACC as an aid rather than a substitute for responsible driving. Regular maintenance and keeping the sensors clean are also essential to ensure optimal performance of the ACC system.

In conclusion, the BMW 3 Series does offer Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) as an optional feature. ACC is a sophisticated technology that enhances driving comfort and safety by automatically maintaining a set distance from the vehicle ahead. It utilizes sensors and radar to detect the speed and position of surrounding vehicles, allowing the car to adjust its speed accordingly.

The inclusion of Adaptive Cruise Control in the BMW 3 Series provides drivers with added convenience during long journeys and congested traffic situations. By reducing the need for constant acceleration and deceleration, ACC can help alleviate driver fatigue and stress. This feature exemplifies BMW’s commitment to utilizing advanced technologies to enhance their vehicles’ performance and ensure a pleasurable driving experience.

Abs module repair

  • Add to quote

Can someone maybe point me to a reputable module repair person/company? My Teves mk60 abs module is done. Was intermittent and now it has finally succomed (INPA verified). 2002 330ci northern California. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers

Since its done. Open it up and have a look at the circuit board, look for any bad/loose/cracked or overheated solder joints and check for any bad caps and for any bad grounds. Any of these issues can cause it not to work properly or not at all. Nothing to lose by looking at it.

bmw 320d cruise control

The ABS control module internals may be potted, filled with a sealant, making it difficult to check the circuit board and connections. The Bosch 5.7 is like this. Not sure about the Teves MK60 though. I was searching around and found these repair services. Will add more links as I find them. https://www.ebay.com/itm//272377729354 https://www.g7computers.com/collections/vehicle-computer-repair-service/products/bmw-computer-repair https://www.shop.modulerepairpro.com/ABS-Pump-Control-Module-BMW-330i-2002_c4015.htm http://www.bba-reman.com/us/catalogue/parts/53/ Looks like most of the repair shops that do the MK60 are in the UK. Still searching though...

If its filled with that hard shiny black stuff, you can remove it with a hairdryer on high setting, patience, and a sharp flat tool. Dental picks and screwdrivers works pretty good. A piece of hardwood with an edge works good and less likely to damage anything.

Thanks y'all. What accellarant do you suggest I dip the rag in before I put it in the fuel filler, light it and walk away? ***x1f632;***x1f61b;

No reason to repair it when you can get a MK60 from a newer E46 and swap it in just fine. Kind of a pain in the ass job but sure is nice not having the trifecta anymore.

And then code the Vin? I have NCS expert but it's Chinese math to me. What years have the same module? Mine is 2002

I wanna say it was INPA I coded the module VIN with, then I used Tool32 to recalibrate the steering angle sensor. 50sKid has a really good YouTube video I used for this. I have a 2002 car and I believe my module was from a 2005 car. They are backwards compatible, the newer versions are revised and don't fail like the older ones. Also worth noting I believe AWD is different, so try and get one from the same car but a few years newer.

Module Master in Moscow Idaho is good. I've had them repair several modules and they've been great. They don't repair all modules though. If you repair your own module you don't have to recode it.

Module Master doesn’t yet repair the MK60, according to their website. https://modulemaster.com/rebuilds/shop/brakes/abs-modules/abs-ate-m60/

Thanks everyone. I think I will drive it for awhile and fix it next year. It drives fine and I know I have no abs but are there any other major issues or problems with driving it like this? It's a second car that I drive about 500 miles a month and they are relaxed miles. I hate the lights and almost want to put black tape over them grrr

One said mine could not be repaired (based on code) while second quoted $100 and no promises. Bought newer used off ebay for $50. Replace your brake master cylinder while there; $50 from RmEuropean for oem supplier (ATE?). GL. What was your code? Mine is 'ecu request out of range' and/or 'CAN timeout'. I called bba reman as suggested and they said the mk60 has a lot of comm errors and to send it in. They won't charge me if they can't fix it(just a bench fee).

What year? Nice job man.

abs module fixed I want to be detailed here about how I got to this point, as it may help someone who has the same problem and error codes. 2002 330ci 5 speed, trifecta lights with the brake light red and the dsc and abs lights yellow. They would be off in the morning but as soon as it got warm they would be on and stay on until the next morning. Car drove fine with no symptoms aside from no abs etc, and after getting in touch with a few of you here in the forum, BaliDawg remotely installed Bmw Tools on my Windows 7 64bit laptop, yes 64bit, which included INPA, Winkfp, Ncs expert, and Tool32. INPA showed error codes 'ECU request out of range' and 'error f code' and those were the only codes(INPA). I checked wheel sensors, abs pump and a few other things in INPA, had a couple remote diagnostic sessions with BaliDawg, and was pretty sure it was the abs module. I grappled with removing and sending out the module or getting a donor out of a yard and going that route. Apparently there are no guarantees when you send it out. The MK60 module is hit or miss I guess so I decided to grab one from a yard. I found a 2005 325i and used this car to figure out a way to get the module out without removing brake lines. I will say that it's actually not that bad with some patience. The only issue is clearance for the prong for the abs pump. When you take one out of the donor car it's all obvious. I do the swap and schedule a session with BaliDawg to code this thing. Using Ncs expert, we were able to code the module to my vin and do a steering angle calibration and the lights turned off. All was not fixed however because when I installed the module, I bent the 2 prongs on the module when I shoved it through to the abs pump. I figured it was the pump because I was able to activate my pump through INPA 2 days before with the old module in the morning when it was cold and then I couldn't after the swap. This caused the lights to turn back on after rolling a few hundred feet. I pulled it back apart and saw the problem and straightened the prongs and carefully reinstalled the abs pump. Lights are off and I just drove for an hr at all speeds, got squirrelly, dsc flickered etc. This is not that big of a deal with the right programs and support. If you have this problem and are frustrated and need some programs or assistance, I recommend contacting BaliDawg. Take care of him and he"ll take care of you and you will learn a lot. Hopefully this helps someone. Thanks for all the responses, cheers. Part number for the module I removed is: 6 759 047 10.0960-0805.3 Replacement module: 6 765 454 10.0960-0820.3

Way to stick with it and get it solved. Cheers!

When I had my 2001 530i E39, I got the trifecta of ABS and DSC. Removing the ABS module was like 4 bolts. Sent it to BBS-reman and got it back a week later. It was literally the simplest remove/replace I ever did. Why was it so complicated on the E46 ? Big props to Bali. A true selfless E46 brother

As far as removing it? It's buried under the master cylinder in the drug bin. There is no room. Cowling, heat shield, intake boots get removed then you have to carefully pull back the master cylinder and brake lines and lift up just right to get the module to clear. There is a 2.5 inch prong on the module that goes through the abs block into the pump that makes it a little tricky. And then then you just code the new(used) one. I called bba reman and they weren't sure about the error code(ecu request out of range) and honestly the mk60 was not as reliable back in 2002 so I'm told. They made them better as the years went on and I wanted the newer one as opposed to a fixed 2002 module if it was even fixable. I ended up paying about the same as a rebuild all together but I learned a lot about INPA and some coding stuff and I think it was the right move. I just got the car 3 months ago and I almost lit it on fire over this so I'm glad it's over. I have already fixed everything else so hopefully I get a few months off lol. Yeah I've seen vids of E39 module removals and I was jealous for sure! Take care

Access is good BUT it gets hot there and that's probably why yours went out. I think mine went out when I replaced my brake booster. I had to remove the brake system for that and I was aggressive and probably smacked it around enough to knock a solder joint loose or a wire inside or something that was gonna fail anyway. Who knows.
