WHAT IS BLOOD BROTHERS THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers . Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.

It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail).

The superb score includes Bright New Day , Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True .

Blood Brothers

28th march to 1st april 2023.

Willy Russell’s multi-award-winning musical about twins separated at birth is the stuff of theatre legend. Directed by Bob Tomson and Bill Kenwright, the latest touring production, which opened in Coventry last night (and will also visit Cheltenham, Sheffield, Chelmsford, Bristol and Brighton) confirms why: it is a timeless and moving show which never fails to bring audiences to their feet. It lived up to its affectionate title of the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’ at the Belgrade’s opening night after stunning performances from the whole talented cast.

Mrs Johnstone is the beating heart of the story. A working-class single mother struggling to make ends meet, her decision to give up one of her twin boys to the wealthy housewife she cleans for is not made easily. The success of any production of Blood Brothers relies upon Mrs Johnstone: Niki Colwell Evans delivers a powerhouse performance in the role. She radiates maternal warmth with ease in the first half and is equally convincing as the show takes a darker turn in the second half.

Personal reservations about adults playing children means I’ve always struggled with the first half of the piece, when twins Mickey and Eddie are 8-year-olds growing up on ‘opposite sides of the tracks’ in 1960s Liverpool. Sean Jones’, in an oversized moth-eaten cardigan, captures the mischievous charm of the young Mickey nicely and is particularly strong reciting a poem about being “nearly eight.”

Joe Sleight’s Eddie, Mickey’s blood brother being raised as an only child in a middle-class home, is equally charming albeit a charm rooted in sincerity and honesty. The friendship formed is entirely convincing which heightens the inevitable tragedy when it comes and underpins the emotional journey as we move into the far more dramatically satisfying second half.

Despite offering an evening in the theatre with plenty of laughs, this is no fairytale musical. Any Beatles-inspired notion that “all you need is love” is firmly rejected. Love simply isn’t enough when you cannot afford to feed yourself and your family. Themes of social class and inequality of opportunity remain depressingly relevant in 2023 but what strikes me more is a rather bleak message about love. Mrs Johnstone’s unconditional, uncomplicated love for her children isn’t enough; pitted against the harsh economic realities of working-class life, her warmth and affection is not a sufficient foundation for Mickey to succeed. The repressed, emotionally cold, straitlaced Mrs Lyons (Paula Tappenden – jittery, neurotic) is financially stable and this alone provides the foundation for Eddie to follow a quite different path. Nature O, Nurture 1.

Blood Brothers may be melodramatic but there’s a very good reason why it is one of only three musicals to surpass 10,000 West End performances: we care. Niki Colwell Evans’ performance of ‘Tell Me It’s Not True’ is worth the ticket price alone but there are a cast full of other reasons to catch this excellent touring production.

Blood Brothers is playing at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry from Tuesday 28 th March to Saturday 1 st April 2023. Tour Details.

Blood Brothers - Chelmsford Theatre

blood brothers tour chelmsford

This was the opening night at Chelmsford for the UK Tour of this production, and it lived up to our expectations.

Blood Brothers tells the Story of Mrs Johnstone, a working class mother, already with a house full of children who discovers she is having twins. Struggling to already care for her children, she worries that two extra babies to feed will end in her children going into care. Her employer Mrs Lyons, a wealthy lady who cannot have children convinces her one of the babies will be better with her and she will raise him as her own. So, she gives Edward, or in effect sells him, to Mrs Lyons and keeps the other baby Mickey for her own. The story tells how the two boys grow up and how their mothers struggle to keep them apart.

Niki Colewell Evans as Mrs Johnstone was outstanding. Quite often this part is a ‘Star Vehicle/Name’ role but it was so nice to see this portrayed by a strong actress with fantastic vocals. Niki’s voice is deep and rounded. She delivers such gravitas and grit in the big numbers and her portrayal of the character was moving with raw emotions and great vulnerability. She ages incredibly well throughout the performance and was a joy to watch.

The Narrator played by Danny Whitehead, was dark and brooding and commanded the stage when he appeared. He was one of the main contributors to many of the scene changes, throwing and casually moving pieces of furniture on and off stage and I loved this.

Sean Jones as Mickey showed a great breadth of talent going from seven year old Mickey full of boundless energy and fun, through teenage Mickey and all his adolescent awkwardness to the deeply troubled adult with great physicality and stage craft. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment he was on stage.

As his twin brother Eddie, Joe Sleight delivered the middle class ‘niceness’ that Eddie requires. He was perfectly posh with all the right mannerism and a soft charm. This was a good contrast to Mickey and the two worked well together.

Mrs Lyons, played by Sarah Jane Buckley, also showed great depth of character and gave a moving and unravelled performance as the deeply paranoid, adopted mother.

The set was very atmospheric with a dramatic rake on the stage which we don’t normally see in this theatre, with rows of houses either side. Initially with a backdrop featuring the Roya Liver Building in Liverpool which was replaced with green fields when the families moved out of the city. The lighting in this production was superb and gave it the extra edge with so many atmospheric moments throughout.

It has been very many years since I last saw a production of Blood Brothers and I had forgotten some of the great humour that it includes. There were also some fantastic cameos from other cast members which added further to the production.

This was a great evenings entertainment and we were delighted to see this production. I understand Chelmsford is a sell out but if you can see it elsewhere on it’s tour I strongly recommend it.

Blood brothers – on tour.

THE BLOOD BROTHERS reunite for U.S. tour and 'Crimes' reissue

The Blood Brothers live '00s , Nick Barnett

A decade on from their last round of reunion dates, Seattle-formed post-hardcore eccentrics the Blood Brothers have announced they're getting back together for a U.S. tour, which celebrates an upcoming vinyl reissue of their fourth full-length release, Crimes .

After teasing something being on the horizon in an Instagram post yesterday (May 15th), the band have now formally announced their plans to hit stages coast to coast throughout November and December.

The show poster is marked with "Everything will be just awful when we're around," a line taken from "The Shame" off 2003's Ross Robinson -produced …Burn, Piano Island Burn , though the upcoming dates coincide with the October 4th reissue of the following year's Crimes , which was produced by John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Ceremony)

"As we've been putting together the 20th anniversary reissue of Crimes , what I'm struck by most listening back is the energy," vocalist Jordan Blilie commented in a press statement.

"It feels both feral and weirdly focused, like whatever chemistry we'd been tinkering with had finally crystallized. It was on stage, though, where that energy reached its most joyful, reckless, collective state. It's an experience that never really goes away, and one we wanted to share again. So, we'll be playing a handful of shows this fall. We hope to see you there."

As with last year's BPIB repress, the 20th anniversary edition of Crimes is being presented as a double-vinyl release that now includes b-sides, and a booklet featuring liner notes and era-specific photos. You can pre-order the album here , via Epitaph Records.

The Blood Brothers initially played from the late Nineties to 2007, but reunited for a run of dates in 2014. Band members went on to perform in Past Lives, Head Wound City, Jaguar Love, Fleet Foxes and more.

2024 panto tickets on sale following an outstanding year for Chelmsford Theatre

Snow White Ad

Tickets for Chelmsford Theatre’s 2024 panto – Snow White – are now on sale following the acclaimed five-week run of Jack and the Beanstalk. The successful 2023 panto tops out an outstanding year for the theatre.

Five-star Jack and the Beanstalk praised by critics and audiences

Jack and the Beanstalk entire cast in costume on main stage

Chelmsford Theatre’s 2023 pantomime delighted families with the giant fairy tale, Jack and the Beanstalk. The show presented a charming storyline packed with topical jokes, colourful costumes, and the latest music hits.

Co-produced in house by Chelmsford Theatre alongside One From The Heart, this year’s production was a hit with critics. Southend Theatre Scene awarded the show five stars, while Ovation Radio dubbed it “a non-stop festive treat from start to finish” .

Panto characters and Daisy the Cow on stage in Jack and the Beanstalk

The theatre’s pantos are well known for their strong overall casting, rather than relying on a single star name, and 2023 was no different with critics commending cast members’ “wonderful energy” and “comical essence”.

Members of the public were equally enthralled by the triumphant show, laughing, singing, and booing along with the cast. Audience feedback praised the show’s playful silliness, with some declaring it the “best panto” they’d seen yet:

“ “I haven't been to a panto for years & it was the best show I have been to!!! I laughed and laughed, the characters were fantastic, the set was brilliant, the jokes were terrible but hilarious!!! We will definitely be coming again, thank you for a fab night.”
“ “We all really loved the panto this year! It’s the best one we have seen so far! Great cast, loved the streamers and confetti. The theatre looks fab after the refurb too.”
“ “Having been to several Pantomimes at various different places, Chelmsford has always been the best and this year’s was the best one yet! All 9 of us loved it and I’m thinking about returning before it finishes! Cannot wait for next year! Thank you!”

The production attracted theatre goers from far and wide, with more than 26,500 visitors welcomed across 61 performances, including students from 42 local schools. This equates to 91% of tickets sold, making it Chelmsford Theatre’s bestselling panto yet.

Another festive family show, the magical The Night Before Christmas, saw great success for the theatre. The sold-out studio production brought Christmas joy to families across 25 performances, with around 3,500 tickets sold.

An outstanding reopening year for Chelmsford Theatre

Jack and the Beanstalk’s success brings the curtain down on an outstanding year for Chelmsford Theatre.

The theatre reopened to the public in January 2023 following an extensive programme to refurbish its front of house spaces. The revamp transformed the tired theatre, giving customers a new ‘red carpet’ experience in Chelmsford with “a modern yet elegantly retro feel” .

Main foyer before Theatre refurb

Since reopening, the venue has been buzzing with energy. The number of shows received has increased significantly compared to previous years, including two sold-out West End shows – Agatha Christie’s Mousetrap and Bill Kenwright’s Blood Brothers. National comedy treasure, Romesh Ranganathan also brought his deadpan humour to the theatre in 2023, and Dreamcoat Stars saw four Josephs reunite on Chelmsford Theatre’s main stage.

Audience figures have also been strong since the revamp. More than 135,000 people were welcomed through the theatre doors in 2023, with over 40% of bookers purchasing for the first time. Spending on food and drink has also increased by 35% compared to previous years, and 98.5% of customers who completed post-show surveys said they would visit again.

Councillor Marie Goldman, Deputy Leader of Chelmsford City Council and Cabinet Member for a Connected Chelmsford, says the refurbishment programme has secured Chelmsford Theatre’s commercial viability:

“ “The refurbishment of Chelmsford Theatre has made such a difference. It has created a cultural community hub in the centre of Chelmsford, which is achieving a great mix of new and returning audiences. Our investment has made the venue much more commercially viable, protecting it for years to come. It bucks the current trend in the arts sector and recognises that the theatre is an important cultural venue which isn’t just a “nice to have” – it’s an essential part of community life, that both residents and visitors from further afield want to utilise.” Councillor Marie Goldman, Deputy Leader of Chelmsford City Council and Cabinet Member for a Connected Chelmsford

A catalyst for further change across the theatre

On top of the refurbishment, in February 2023 the theatre launched its first ever membership loyalty scheme, which saw more than 450 customers sign up in the first year alone. The venue also opened its first daytime café and started work on an outreach and community programme to access more diverse audiences.

Theatre Director, Lee Henderson, says the theatre’s transformation wasn’t simply about updating the venue’s décor. It acted as a catalyst for further changes, including new programming, branding, and an improved customer experience:

“ “The refurbishment of Chelmsford Theatre has been a real catalyst for change for us. Not only did we get a beautifully revamped front of house for our theatre goers to enjoy, but we’ve worked hard to transform our programming, improve the customer experience, launch our new brand, and update our public profile. All of which has combined to present a cultural venue that is fit for our 21st-century audiences. “It’s a real labour of love to produce our annual panto in house, and I’m so proud of what has been achieved by our team this festive season and indeed, throughout the last year since our reopening. I’m looking forward to seeing what 2024 brings for the theatre.” Lee Henderson, Theatre Director, Chelmsford Theatre
