The best weekend getaways from Sydney to explore NSW

We've tried and tested these weekend escapes in New South Wales

In NSW, you don’t need to travel far to make a couple of nights away feel like a proper holiday. Whether you’re in the mood for a beach break, a hike in the mountains, or an escape to the country, we’ve found a host of getaway destinations that are easily accessible from Sydney.

Need to squeeze your excursion into a day? These are the best day trips from Sydney .

Or have an in-tents city break at one of the best camping spots near sydney ..

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Weekend trips from Sydney

Lake macquarie.

Lake Macquarie

While you may only know Lake Macquarie for its expansive body of water, this unassuming region sandwiched between Sydney and Newcastle has a lot to offer city folk looking to slow down and get back to nature.

The Blue Mountains

  • Boutique hotels

The Blue Mountains

For some, a trip to the Blue Mountains holds the promise of seclusion and serenity among the gum trees. For others, it’s about conquering mountain trails and spontaneously teaming up with other avid adventurers to explore the bush waterfalls, scenic vistas and swimming holes.

The South Coast

The South Coast

Drive only two short hours south of Sydney and you’re in an adventure playground. Destination surfing spots, climbing cliffs, and coastal treks draw in those who relax by doing, but if you prefer to recline and dine, there’s fresh seafood, local produce and a burgeoning dining scene to ensure all your relaxation goals are met.

Orange

Drive through cherry blossoms, lurid wattle and gold mine adjacent creeks (that still yield a nugget or two) to find some of Australia’s most interesting wines and meet the passionate makers.

Byron Bay

While Byron Bay’s town centre has succumbed to a backpackers-meet-the-one-per-cent influx, the lifetime fire twirlers and queer communes haven’t been completely expunged from the Byron Bay region.

The Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley

Ah, wine country. Proud growers, wine makers and vintners from this region have been squeezing the good stuff out of grapes for close to 180 years, and it has earned the Hunter solid street cred on both Australian and international vinous scenes. With plentiful hot air ballooning, cheese and crazy good food on offer, this idyllic green corner of NSW deserves our attention.

Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass

Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass

New South Wales has some spectacular ski resorts and snow fields. You can hire all your gear at any of these spots (think skis, snow jackets, helmets – anything) and can even do it all in one day and be back home for dinner with  these transfers .

Mudgee

‘Mudgee’ comes from the Wiradjuri word ‘Moothi’ which means, romantically, ‘Nest in the Hills’. It has a climate several degrees warmer than the surrounding high country, which, along with sandy loam soil, makes the area attractive to viticulturalists.

The Hawkesbury

The Hawkesbury

Here you can walk a World Heritage convict road, sample locally brewed cider or go horseriding. Winding through it all is the river, a place for fishing, watersports or a lazy cruise amid stunning scenery.

The Central Coast

The Central Coast

The dining scene across the Central Coast is really hitting its stride. Thanks to some seriously talented young chefs, excellent refurbs and creative spaces, there are restaurants and cafés in Long Jetty, Avoca, Terrigal and Woy Woy that are well worth a road trip.

World Heritage-listed wilderness areas, cute country towns, mountain peaks, lush valleys, and sun-soaked beaches are all within easy reach of the city, and families will find great options for cheap weekend getaways with kid-friendly attractions. Whether you're planning a mini-vacation with the kids, plotting a romantic weekend getaway, pining for an epic road trip, or looking for short breaks for singles, find ideas with our list of the best weekend getaways from Sydney.

The Blue Mountains

The hunter valley, jervis bay & the south coast, the new south wales central coast, port macquarie, port stephens, kangaroo valley, southern highlands, the snowy mountains, coffs harbour, map of weekend getaways from sydney.

The Three Sisters, Blue Mountains

For an exhilarating dose of nature and breathtaking vistas, you can't beat the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains. About an hour's drive from the CBD , this is one of the best short breaks from Sydney. It's an especially popular last-minute weekend trip in the summer, when the mercury soars and temperatures are cooler at the higher elevations.

Winter brings possible sprinklings of snow and opportunities for couples to snuggle up in a cozy cabin by a crackling fire.

Choose from a long list of invigorating attractions and places to visit in the Blue Mountains . Inhale the fresh eucalyptus-tinged air in the beautiful Blue Mountains National Park , gawk at the famous Three Sisters rock pinnacles shrouded in mist, hike the extensive network of trails, and see cool-climate plants at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden . Sightseeing in the surrounding towns is also rewarding. Explore charming mountain villages with art galleries, boutiques, and tea shops.

Blue Mountains Botanic Garden

For a unique perspective of the park's natural wonders, you can soar across the valley on the Scenic World Skyway or glass-floored Scenic Cableway, or ride the steepest railway in the world through an ancient rainforest. Waterfalls, wildlife, and lookouts are other top attractions. This is also one of the few easy weekend getaways from Sydney by train.

If money is no object, stay at the Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley , the perfect luxury winter escape, and if you're planning a romantic getaway in NSW, Parklands Country Gardens and Lodges is an excellent choice, with 28 acres of gardens, elegant decor, and a luxurious day spa.

A horse in the Upper Hunter Valley

Just over a two-hour drive north of Sydney, the Hunter Valley is a haven for foodies. This is the oldest grape-growing region in Australia, but you can also sample farm-fresh produce on multi-course tasting menus at top-notch restaurants. Chocolates, cheeses, chutneys, fresh-from-the-hive honey, olives, and aromatic oils are just some of the region's specialties.

After indulging, you can work off all the gourmet delights by hiking the scenic trails in nearby Wollemi and Barrington Tops National Parks .

You'll find plenty of family-focused things to do in the Hunter Valley , too. Soar over the valley in a hot air balloon, bike along quiet country roads, cuddle kangaroos at the Hunter Valley Zoo , and admire the botanical beauties at the Hunter Valley Gardens .

Active couples can play a few rounds of golf or tennis, and unwind at one of the region's luxury day spas at the end of the day.

In a convenient central location, Pokolbin Village makes a great-value base for a short break from Sydney. Here, you'll find cozy cottages, an inviting outdoor pool, tennis and boules courts, and a popular little Italian eatery. Seeking a unique weekend getaway in NSW? Book a stay at Elysia Wellness Retreat .

Hyams Beach

It's no secret. Most Sydneysiders agree that the South Coast has some of the state's best beaches, especially in the Shoalhaven region. In fact dazzling Hyams Beach , about three hours south of Sydney, near Jervis Bay , is one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia . It's the perfect spot for a weekend getaway if you want to bask on snow-white sands (reputedly the whitest in the world) and slip into the silky, sparkling blue water on a hot summer's day.

But Hyams isn't the only stunning slice of coast. Murrays Beach , Huskisson , and Steamers Beach are other top choices. Hiking trails lace the surrounding bushland of Booderee National Park , and other popular things to do here include kayaking, dolphin and whale-watching cruises, fishing, boating, stand up paddleboarding, and scuba diving in Jervis Bay Marine Park .

Head farther south from Jervis Bay, and you can surf the breaks at Mollymook Beach , come face to face with kangaroos at Murramarang National Park or Pebbly Beach, and soak up the sunshine on true-to-its-name Pretty Beach . For a relaxing splurge, stay at Bannisters by the Sea in Mollymook, a luxury oceanfront resort with a vanishing edge pool; posh day spa; and highly-acclaimed seafood restaurant by famed chef, Rick Stein.

On the way to Jervis Bay, Kiama makes a wonderful weekend getaway in its own right.

Aerial view of Kiama

About 90 minutes south of Sydney, Kiama is home to the famous Kiama Blowhole, one of the world's largest blowholes . But there's more than just the hiss and fizz of water to lure you to this South Coast beauty.

From the air, you could be forgiven for thinking that this is a little slice of Ireland. Lushly-cloaked hills roll to the sea, and pristine beaches rim the coast below steep sea cliffs. Head to Saddleback Mountain Lookout for bird's-eye views.

Along the coast, you can bask on the soft sands, paddle in rock pools, surf the swells, or watch the experts ride world-class breaks at a surf competition. Need some exercise? Soak up the salt-tinged sea air on the Kiama Coast Walk , and capture an image of the iconic Kiama Lighthouse.

Kiama Coast Walk

Inland Kiama attractions are just as enticing. Drive about 15 kilometers from Kiama to Minnamurra Rainforest Centre in Budderoo National Park. From here, you can hike The Falls walk to see rainforest cascades and a fern-filled canyon.

Kiama also has a rich history and Indigenous culture. Learn more about it on a Kiama Heritage Walk . Soar through the canopy on a zipline tour at Illawarra Fly , catch a music festival or a lazy river ride in Jamberoo, or linger in a Kiama café for a relaxed lunch. Options for rewarding adventures in Kiama and the surrounding region are endless.

Waves crashing at Avoca Beach

The New South Wales Central Coast is a picturesque playground right on Sydney's doorstep. Only an hour's drive from the city , this beach-rimmed stretch of coastline is one of the best short getaways from Sydney.

The main hub is Gosford . But most weekend warriors base themselves in one of the small Central Coast beach towns. Avoca Beach, Terrigal Beach, and The Entrance are the most popular, and water sports are among the top things to do. Swim, fish, surf the swells, or rent a kayak to paddle along the coast.

Avoca Beach is all about its namesake feature, an inviting arc of Norfolk pine-fringed sand and sea. Splash in the waves, dive the ex-HMAS Adelaide wreck offshore, or book a surf lesson. Prefer calmer waters? Head to Avoca Lake . Here, you can rent a pedal boat, kayak, or SUP to explore the lake.

Terrigal also has a lovely golden-sand beach with a small rock pool, and The Entrance has some of the most unspoiled beaches on the Central Coast – Shelly and Bateau Bay beaches are favorites.

Terrigal Beach

Hikers are also in luck. Take the eight-kilometer Bouddi Coastal Walk to see wave-thrashed beaches, whales, woodlands, and wildlife.

Looking for a romantic place to stay on the Central Coast? The region is known for its top-notch boutique hotels. The five-star Bells at Killcare Boutique Hotel, Restaurant and Spa and its sister resort, Pretty Beach House , are peaceful escapes surrounded by bird-rich bushland and gorgeous beaches. Both offer weekend getaway deals for couples, including babymoon packages and midweek breaks.

Flynn's Beach

Beaches, bushwalking, wildlife, and water sports are some of the top ingredients of a weekend getaway in Port Macquarie. Called "Port" by the locals, this holiday hot spot lies about four hours north of Sydney.

Gorgeous beaches stretch north and south of the busy little town: Flynn's Beach, Nobby's Beach, and Shelly Beach are among the most popular, and you can ride camels at beautiful Lighthouse Beach , which seems to stretch on for miles.

A great way to explore the coast here is on the nine-kilometer Port Macquarie Coastal Walk in Sea Acres National Park, and you can break it up into several smaller sections if you're traveling with kids or short on time. For a breathtaking overview of the region, stroll the short hike up to Tacking Point Lighthouse or head up North Brother Mountain to Laurieton Lookout in Dooragan National Park.

Thanks to the town's enviable position at the mouth of the Hastings River, fishing is also excellent. Sign up for a deep-sea fishing trip, cast a line off a local pier, and make sure you can sample some of the fruits of the sea at the town's excellent restaurants.

Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie is also home to one of the largest populations of wild koalas on the Eastern Seaboard . Kids will love exploring the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail (pick up a trail guide at a visitor information center) and visiting these lovable Aussie critters at the Koala Hospital .

Other family-friendly things to do in Port Macquarie on a weekend getaway include visiting the Billabong Zoo: Koala & Wildlife Park and plucking fresh produce at Ricardoes Tomatoes and U-Pick Strawberry Farm. Want to see some aquatic wildlife? Book a whale-watching trip in season (May through November).

Across from the beach, Sandcastle Apartments Port Macquarie makes a great base for exploring this stunning town – especially for families and groups. Beautiful blue-water views and sunny spaces greet you in the one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.

View from Tomaree Head

Port Stephens is all about the water. Rippling volcanic headlands embrace a lovely slice of blue-water bay and white sand. Here, less than three hours north of Sydney, you'll find more than 20 beautiful beaches where you can lay down your towel.

Swimming, surfing, sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and boating are popular things to do on the water, and this is also one of the top fishing destinations in Australia – especially for game fishing, with record catches of billfish species.

Whales and dolphins are also frequent visitors in the bay. Sign up for a cruise to see them in action. You can also get out on the water in nearby Myall Lakes National Park , one of the largest lake systems in the state.

Port Stephens also offers plenty of adventures on land. Hike the Tomaree Head Summit Walk for panoramic views of the Port Stephens coast, zoom down the largest dunes in the Southern Hemisphere , and explore pristine pockets of natural bushland.

The main towns are Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay , but The Anchorage Hotel & Spa in nearby Corlette also makes a great Hamptons-style weekend escape, with two sparkling pools, water's edge restaurants, and a luxury spa.

Fitzroy Falls

Life moves at a slower pace in the lush Kangaroo Valley. About a two-hour drive southwest of Sydney, it makes the perfect escape for stressed-out city slickers. You won't find any traffic lights in this quaint Southern Highlands village, just rolling green fields and farms surrounded by emerald escarpments, and the historic 19th-century Hampden Bridge , with only one lane, so you have to slow down.

Wilderness areas beckon just beyond, with hiking trails , waterfalls , and, plenty of wildlife , including, you guessed it, kangaroos! Don't miss the famous Fitzroy Falls in Morton National Park , and you can also kayak down the Kangaroo River or go horseback riding and wombat spotting.

Foodies will be in heaven here. Stop by one of the town's cute tea rooms for afternoon tea, pick up some fresh produce from the farmers market, and sample a fresh-baked pie from the famous Kangaroo Valley Pie Shop .

While you're here, save time to browse the gardens and galleries in Bowral , a 40-minute drive away. Planning to visit in the spring? Don't miss the Tulip Time Festival at Bowral's Corbett Gardens and other community venues.

Other worthwhile places to visit in the Southern Highlands include Berrima, Bundanoon, Mittagong, and Moss Vale. Top tourist attractions in these country towns include heritage buildings, gorgeous gardens, galleries, art studios, boutiques, spas, and antique shops.

If you're here for a romantic weekend getaway, The Laurels B&B is a lovely choice, with antique furniture, chandeliers, and clawfoot tubs.

Snow gums in the Snowy Mountains

Summer, winter, spring, or fall, outdoor activities are the main focus in the Snowy Mountains. This is the ideal weekend escape for active couples and families.

Wondering about a weekend getaway in New South Wales in winter? In the Snowy Mountains, you can ski or snowboard down the snow gum-spotted slopes at some of Australia's best ski resorts . If downhill skiing is not for you, try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, and then snuggle by a crackling fire in the evening.

At other times of the year, popular things to do in the Snowy Mountains include trout fishing in the region's crystal-clear streams and lakes, mountain biking, rafting and kayaking along the mighty Snowy River , and hiking amid the snow gum forests and wind-whipped heathlands of Kosciuszko National Park . Serious hikers might want to spend the weekend tackling the 16.8-kilometer return hike to the summit of 2,228-meter-high Mount Kosciuszko , Australia's highest peak.

Prefer to soak up the rugged alpine scenery from the comfort of a car? Take the Kosciuszko Alpine Way, a scenic self-drive route, which runs for 108 kilometers from Canberra to Albury.

New Parliament House

Fabulous cafés and restaurants, provocative galleries, and thought-provoking museums and memorials make Canberra a cool spot for culture vultures. Designed by American architect, Walter Burley Griffin and his wife, Marion Mahony Griffin, the city is also easy on the eye. Gardens and green spaces punctuate urban areas, and glittering Lake Burley Griffin sits at its center, ringed by inviting walking tracks.

You'll find most of Canberra's top tourist attractions around Lake Burley Griffin in the Parliamentary Triangle . Here, you can tour New Parliament House and browse the exhibits at the Museum of Australian Democracy , the National Gallery of Australia, and Questacon: The National Science and Technology Centre. But if you only have time for one attraction, make it the Byzantine-style Australian War Memorial, a poignant tribute to the country's fallen soldiers. Families with kids will love the National Zoo and Aquarium.

Canberra is also famous for its family-friendly festivals. Floriade , held in September or October, is a particular favorite, with exhibits celebrating the city's colorful spring flowers, but you can admire the local flora at any time of the year at the Australian National Botanic Gardens . Canberra is also beautiful in the autumn, when fiery fall hues ignite the city's gardens.

The heritage-listed Hyatt Hotel Canberra , with Art Deco decor and a weekend high tea, puts you close to the top cultural attractions.

Aerial view of Muttonbird Island

About 5.5 hours north of Sydney, Coffs Harbour is a long road trip from the city, but if you have a long weekend up your sleeve, it's worth it.

Families, in particular, will find plenty of things to do here. Bask on beautiful beaches; get up close with friendly marine mammals at the Dolphin Conservation Park ; or visit the Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve, where you can hike the scenic walking trails.

Other popular things to do include surfing, swimming, fishing, and kayaking, and you can also keep a lookout for migrating whales from May through November. For spectacular views of the coast and rainforest head to the Forest Sky Pier.

No visit to Coffs Harbour would be complete without stopping by the iconic Big Banana Fun Park, even if only for a photo op. The kids will love the water park, rides, and banana-themed desserts.

If you have time to explore further afield, try to squeeze in a drive along Waterfall Way . This 185-kilometer scenic drive connects Coffs Harbour and the New South Wales' town of Armidale passing by rugged river valleys, lush rainforests, waterfalls, and wildlife-rich national parks.

BreakFree Aanuka Beach Resort in Coffs Harbour makes a great base – especially for families. But you'll find a range of facilities and accommodation styles to suit everyone here, including couples and single travelers.

Ultimate weekends away in Victoria

28 May 2021

Time

A weekend in Victoria offers the chance to indulge in the state’s best bits including fresh country air and heritage charm. Here, the best weekends away in Victoria for your hit list.

Located in the rolling, lush farming countryside of South Gippsland in ‘Prom Country’, Loch is the kind of delightful small town that Victoria does as stock-and-trade.

An easy drive from Melbourne, the township was bypassed back in 2008, which led to a revival of quaint here. The main street is infinitely strollable, passing by small shops filled with antiques and collectibles and cosy cafes like Udder & Hoe.

Udder & Hoe, Loch.

Basing yourself in Loch also allows you to sample the wares of the craft breweries, distilleries and wineries that thrive in the area.

With a population that hovers well under the 1000 mark, Dunkeld is a picture-perfect town that is also a gateway to the impressive scenery and nature of the Southern Grampians.

Divide your days into nature-based pursuits in the morning like hiking the mammoth forms of Wurgarri (Mt Sturgeon), Mud-Dadjug (Mt Abrupt) or Bainggug (the Piccaninny) to absorb panoramic views of the Southern Grampian range, and then spend the afternoon wandering the Dunkeld Arboretum walking track and browsing the shops along the main street before retiring to the Royal Mail Hotel to sample its acclaimed menu (you can – and should – stay here, too).

This former gold rush town in Hepburn Shire holds the distinction of being an internationally recognised Book Town, one of only 15 in the world along with the likes of Montereggio in Italy and Ingstrup in Denmark.

The title comes into its own with the staging of the annual book festival; this year’s month-long Turn the Page event will see author talks, panel discussions and workshops held over two weekends in May.

Outside of this, the town is a gem to discover, with much of its gold rush architecture – such as the Clunes Town Hall – wonderfully preserved.

Sitting proudly on the mighty Murray River near its junction with the Darling, the fertile soils around Mildura have earned it an enviable reputation for fruit growing, from the juicy citrus variety to the ones you can make seriously good wine out of.

Sample the fruits of the city’s labour (pun intended) at any of the restaurants and bars dotted along Langtree Avenue, or go straight to the source at the cellar doors, farm gates and roadside stalls scattered throughout the region.

Fuel up on coffee and bagels slathered with local avocado at Nash Lane before riding one of the vintage paddle steamers that cruise the distinctive brown waters of the Murray.

The peaceful waterfront village of Metung is a bit of a secret gem of the East Gippsland region for interstaters, but Victorians love it come holiday time.

Find out what they know by visiting to soak up the lazy village atmosphere, swim, fish and boat its calm waters and enjoy the local produce and fresh seafood that is in plentiful supply; plan your trip to coincide with the farmers’ market, held on the second Saturday of the month.

Finish each day here walking the boardwalk before scoring a table at a nearby café with a glass of something dry and fruity in hand.

If your idea of the perfect weekend away involves less lounging and more adrenalin, then Halls Gap is for you.

Right in the heart of Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, days here can be filled with everything from abseiling to bushwalking, rock climbing and cycling, before heading back to the village for great coffee and food at any of its cafes and restaurants.

For those who like to take things a bit slower, try a Grampians wine tour or discover the Aboriginal rock art at Gulgurn Manja that tells the stories of the local Jarwadjali people.

Play ‘Paper Scissors Rock’ to determine designated driver before visiting the microbrewery of the same name and checking into your dinky Dulc cabin.

Queenscliff

The history and attractions of the Bellarine Peninsula town of Queenscliff belie its size and general laid-back demeanour.

Its position at the entrance to Port Phillip bestowed the town with strategic importance in times gone by, leaving behind a historic fort that you can visit as part of a guided tour, and its distinctive black stone lighthouse – Queenscliff High Light – which is one of only three black lighthouses in the world.

Weekenders should also tick off a visit to the town’s pier, built in 1884, a shopping expedition around its galleries and antique shops, and a snorkelling expedition to swim with the sea lions that dash and dart through the waters offshore.

Queenscliff streetscape.

Another gem of a town in Hepburn Shire, Trentham boasts lovely tree-lined streets and a thriving local food scene.

The latter is not surprising considering the rich volcanic soil of the Great Dividing Range is the perfect base for growing all manner of produce – from chestnuts to olives and fruit. But it is the humble spud that is the star here, with many considering Trentham potatoes to be the best around.

The town also has an award-winning bakery – Red Beard Bakery – that produces crunchy, tangy sourdough you are going to want to take away with you.

While here, make time to walk to Trentham Falls – it will help work off the bread and potatoes!

Healesville

This Yarra Valley town and its surrounds are home to a divergent roster of attractions, from verdant national parks to manicured vineyards to a statement-making art gallery with a sharp, modern design that sits in pleasing contrast to the rolling hills of the countryside it looks out at.

Plan to fill a few days here by sampling all of these: wander through the Rainforest Gallery in Yarra Ranges National Park and climb the stairs to its vertiginous observation platform; hit up the cellar doors at TarraWarra Estate and nearby Oakridge Wines; spend an hour or two browsing the art at TarraWarra Museum of Art.

And, while you are in town, it would be remiss of you not to pop into Four Pillars Distillery, which has put the Victorian township on the gin map.

Melbourne has long topped the list as an ideal city to dash to for a quick break filled with shopping, eating and exploring.

Add headlining sporting events, abundant galleries and museums and big-name theatre productions and you still haven’t scratched the surface.

The best thing to do is book a flight now and add to the list yourself.

If a secluded NSW getaway with idyllic coastal scenery is what you’re after, Bundeena, at the tip of Royal National Park, is the ideal destination.

With just a small strip of cafes, shops and one IGA, the tiny, leafy village of Bundeena really is a world away from the city. Its natural surroundings make it a popular home for many artists and musicians.

Passengers disembarking the vintage ferry in Bundeena from Cronulla.

Lying at the northern end of Central Coast NSW, The Entrance is a top destination for a family weekend getaway in NSW.

Pay a visit to Wentworth Falls and Echo Point for Blue Mountains walks with stunning views , or head to Leura and Katoomba for quaint little shops and cafes.

  • Sydney CBD to Bowral distance: 113km (2 hours by car or from 1 hour 50 minutes by train)

Bowral, in the beautiful Southern Highlands, is an easy place to visit by train from Sydney. This quaint country town at the foot of Mount Gibraltar has a great selection of olde worlde bookshops, antique stores, cafes and boutiques.

Visitors at Tulip Time Festival in Bowral, Australia.

If you feel like exploring further, you can easily hop on the train to nearby Mittagong or drive to Fitzroy Falls in Morton National Park.

I visited Bowral in September, during the annual Tulip Time Festival, which was particularly beautiful. But the Southern Highlands is a picturesque destination at any time of year.

11. Newcastle

Newcastle is a great option for a fun getaway from Sydney with a group of friends. As it’s the second-largest city in New South Wales, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Newcastle .

While it looks quite industrial on first sight, Newcastle has some brilliant beaches and coastal walks, as well as the nearby Worimi Sand Dunes , which are well worth a visit. It’s a great destination for those who want a varied and lively trip away.

12. Hunter Valley

  • Sydney CBD to Hunter Valley (Cessnock) distance: 158km (2 hours by car or from 3 hours 30 minutes by train and bus)

Slightly inland from Newcastle lies the sprawling green expanse of the Hunter Valley. Famous for its vineyards, wine tours are a popular activity on a trip to Hunter Valley , as well as watching the sunrise from the soaring heights of a hot air balloon.

Enjoy one of the best weekend trips in NSW with a visit to the Hunter Valley.

The Hunter Valley Gardens is another popular attraction, and the surrounding national parks such as Yango and Werakata offer a choice of walking tracks.

The road trip from Sydney is a treat in itself if you take Tourist Drive 33 , which winds its way through the New South Wales countryside, passing quaint little villages such as Laguna and Wollombi.

13. Kangaroo Valley

  • Sydney CBD to Kangaroo Valley distance: 153km (2 hours by car or 4 hours 45 minutes by train and bus)

While the northern towns of the Southern Highlands are accessible places to visit from Sydney by train, Kangaroo Valley is a better option for a scenic drive from Sydney. Allow some time to admire your lush surroundings as you follow the slow, winding country road deep into the valley.

With cute heritage buildings and plenty of outdoor activities, such as river kayaking, Kangaroo Valley is perfect for a solo trip or couples retreat from Sydney for those who enjoy nature.

14. Jervis Bay

  • Sydney CBD to Jervis Bay distance: 171km (3 hours by car or from 3 hours 40 minutes by train and bus)

If it’s a NSW romantic getaway you’re after, look no further than tranquil Jervis Bay. Things to do in Jervis Bay include lazing on an amazing choice of bright white beaches between Huskisson and Booderee National Park , as well as eating and shopping in Huskisson.

While the Shoalhaven region is a popular place for a NSW family getaway during the school holidays, the area remains unspoilt and much less built up than many other holiday towns in New South Wales. Out of season, Jervis Bay makes a peaceful destination for a couples’ retreat or solo traveller.

Beautiful Jervis Bay, one of the top weekend trips from Sydney for beach lovers.

You can enjoy the stunning White Sands Walk, explore even more amazing beaches and forests in Booderee National Park or head out to Beecroft Peninsula to see well-known Honeymoon Bay as well as sweeping clifftop views.

Jervis Bay is one of my personal favourite beach holiday destinations in NSW, and I’ve returned many times.

15. Booderee National Park

  • Sydney CBD to Booderee National Park distance: 193km (3 hours by car)

At the southern end of Jervis Bay, you’ll find stunning Booderee National Park . Dotted with powdery white beaches, Booderee has a selection of beachside camping grounds for those who want to get back to nature.

You can also explore botanic gardens, hiking trails and some amazing sunset locations. Just be sure to book your campsite in advance during school holidays. It’s so popular over summer that a ballot system is used!

Bright white Green Patch Beach in Booderee National Park, NSW.

16. Port Stephens

  • Sydney CBD to Nelson Bay distance: 210km (3 hours by car or 4 hours 20 minutes by train and bus)

Even though you can reach Port Stephens in 3 hours by car from Sydney, the woolly green hills that break up the beautiful beaches of Port Stephens give the area a very different look to Sydney, with its craggy limestone headlands.

Things to do in Port Stephens include hiking to the lookout in Tomaree National Park to admire the view below, or simply lazing around on a different beach each day.

Port Stephens, one of the best Sydney weekend getaways.

You’ll also find shops and restaurants in Nelson Bay, dolphin tours and lots of scenic drives into the surrounding NSW bushland.

Since Port Stephens sits a few hours north of Sydney, the weather should be a bit warmer than the South Coast NSW destinations such as Jervis Bay if you’re visiting in winter.

17. Myall Lakes National Park

  • Sydney CBD to Myall Lakes distance: 238km (3 hours 5 minutes by car)

If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat in NSW, Myall Lakes National Park won’t disappoint. With a string of beautiful lakes, as well as a long stretch of beaches, lush Myall Lakes is packed with gorgeous natural scenery.

I camped at Mungo Brush , and enjoyed amazing sunsets behind White Tree Bay and sunrises over the dunes and ocean. For somewhere with more facilities, try Reflections Holiday Park Seal Rocks , which has bungalows and glamping options.

A stunning sunset at Mungo Brush camping ground in Myall Lakes, NSW. This is one of the best weekend getaways from Sydney!

18. Bathurst

  • Sydney CBD to Bathurst distance: 203km (3 hours 20 minutes by car or from 3 hours 35 minutes by train)

Lying inland of the Blue Mountains, Bathurst is a city full of heritage architecture, boutique stores and great parks. You can head out to wineries, visit Orange Botanic Gardens or explore surrounding country villages such as Millthorpe.

Heritage architecture in Bathurst, a top destination for a trip from Sydney.

Of course, you can stop off in the Blue Mounatins on the drive from Sydney too. My favourite place near Bathurst was Sofala, a well-preserved gold mining town that looks like the set of a Wild West movie!

For accommodation on your weekend getaway from Sydney, try Quality Hotel Bathurst , a moderately priced 4* hotel with an indoor pool and choice of family rooms and suites.

19. Canberra

  • Sydney CBD to Canberra distance: 286km (3 hours 30 minutes by car or 4 hours 20 minutes by train)

While it’s technically in ACT not NSW, Canberra is easily reached by car or train from Sydney, so I’m sneaking it into my best weekend getaways from Sydney list as a wild card!

You’ll find plenty of things to do in Canberra to fill a weekend trip. Lose a few hours exploring top Canberra museums, wander through art galleries, pay a visit to Parliament House or hike to Telstra Tower from the beautiful botanic gardens.

Discover the best things to do in Canberra Australia on a weekend getaway from Sydney.

Canberra is great for a cultural family getaway or a solo trip. It’s also a top choice for a Sydney getaway during winter or if the weather’s wet, as there are so many indoor attractions.

I stayed at Canberra City YHA , which has modern facilities (including an indoor pool and sauna!) and a handy location right in the heart of the city.

20. Forster

  • Sydney CBD to Forster distance: 304km (3 hours 45 minutes by car)

If you’re happy to drive up to four hours from Sydney for a beach holiday destination in NSW, Forster, on the Barrington Coast, is a fantastic spot. I spent a weekend in Forster in late 2021 and loved it!

Forster Main Beach on a sunny day, a top weekend getaway from Sydney.

As well as a good selection of shops, cafes and restaurants in Forster town, the surrounding scenery is stunning. Make sure you take a scenic drive along The Lakes Way and stop off at The Green Cathedral, an outdoor church on the banks of Wallis Lake underneath a canopy of palm trees.

I stayed in the gorgeous Palmyra B&B , which is just a ten-minute drive north of Forster. This traditional accommodation has beautiful grounds, a lovely outdoor pool, stunning decor and a communal kitchen and barbecue area.

That’s it for my best weekend getaways from Sydney! For more short break ideas in New South Wales, take a look at my top Sydney day trips . Many of these can easily be extended into a fun weekend getaway!

If you want to travel further afield, take a look through all my New South Wales guides .

While almost every visitor makes it a point to stop in Sydney, many don’t give themselves extra time to explore beyond the city borders.

The area around Sydney offers plenty of really fantastic weekend away opportunities. Whether you’re looking for adventure, a romantic getaway, or a relaxing beach holiday, there are limitless options for the perfect Sydney weekend getaway.

If you ask us, we would definitely recommend extending your stay by a few extra days to get out and explore the area beyond the city. After all, it’s not the cities themselves that make Australia the incredible destination that it is, it’s the outdoor experiences that lie just a short distance from Sydney.

Here are just a few of our favourite weekend getaways from Sydney!

Best Weekend Trips from Sydney

Blue mountains .

In 2000, the Blue Mountains region was named a  World Heritage Area by UNESCO , leading to an increase in local and international tourists to the area. The entrance to the Blue Mountains is located in Glenbrook/Lapstone, just 50 minutes away from Sydney’s city centre, however, the  most popular tourist destination is actually Leura/Katoomba , located 30 minutes further.

Katoomba is the largest and most visited town known for its artsy/hippie population, and its smaller neighbour, Leura, is a picturesque village known as the shopping destination of the region.

Newcastle

Located two hours north of the city, Newcastle is another destination that offers a perfect weekend getaway from Sydney.

Leave behind the busy and touristy life of Australia’s largest city in favour of the  pristine coastline and beautiful beaches, national parks, spectacular high rock walls, and a calm harbour area.

As is the case with a lot of South Coast beaches in New South Wales, the surf in Newcastle is perfect for beginners to intermediates.

If you are looking to escape the crowds, head to Newcastle’s Nobby’s Beach – it is not nearly as busy as some of the beaches in Sydney.  The laid-back vibe makes it the top choice for beach lovers.

Surfing isn’t the only thing that Newcastle has to offer.  There is no shortage of   things to do in Newcastle , making it the perfect choice for a weekend road trip from Sydney.

Darby Street and Beaumont Street offer great shopping and dining options, while the Queens Wharf area is a great place to  enjoy a few drinks with a lovely view of the Hunter River.

We also enjoyed a leisurely  sunset walk along the Esplanade , eventually reaching Memorial Drive. The ocean views from the cliff’s edge are beautiful.

Consider adding a visit to  Lake Macquarie  to your Newcastle itinerary. This  saltwater lake , situated south of Newcastle, is linked to the Tasman Sea via a channel. If you’re in Newcastle during  August , don’t miss out on the  Newcastle Music Festival .

No visit to Newcastle would be complete without a stop at the Australian war memorial,   Fort Scratchley Historic Site . The site pays homage to one of the defence points for the Australian Navy during WWI and WWII and offers great aerial views of the city.

Woy Woy Activities

Brisbane Water National Park is  a good starting point for any Central Coast journey. You can gaze across the vast park and catch a glimpse of Woy Woy Bay in the distance.

Turning the other way, the park’s highest point, Mount Wondabyne, was visible. A quick drive over Mount Ettalong will lead you to Pearl Beach. Along the National Park, you can spot wild wallabies. Explore Royal National Park

Royal National Park is  Australia’s oldest national park  and the second oldest in the world. It covers a huge coastal area full of bushwalks, swimming holes, and waterfalls.

The Seven Best Day Trips From Sydney, Australia

Royal National Park Activities

Wattamolla  is one of the most popular attractions in the Royal National Park. With a stunning waterfall cascading into a picturesque swimming lagoon, Wattamolla is the perfect escape from the busy tourist spots. The unique feature here is the white sand strip that divides the lagoon and ocean, allowing you to access both bushland and beach simultaneously.

Another great activity is thethe cliff walk around Wattamolla Lagoon, which winds all the way to Eagle Rock. During humpback whale migration, you can easily spot these magnificent creatures playing off the Royal National Park coast. The entire Coast Track offers great whale-watching opportunities.

One of the top attractions in the Royal National Park is its collection of beaches. If you love surfing, go to  Garie Beach . Always be cautious of rips and currents, as swimming here can be dangerous.

The Instagram-famous  Wedding Cake Rock  can be found to the south of Bundeena. This popular attraction is part of the  Coast Track , and is about an hour’s hike from Bundeena. Walking along the cliffs is a must-do when visiting the Royal National Park, and the path of the Coastal Track was very easy to follow.

Located just a bit further on from Wedding Cake Rock,  Marley Beach  is a favourite on the list of things to do in the Royal National Park. Explore the gorgeous  Deer Pool  and make your way to the beach via the  Little Marley Trail.

Moving on to the Canberra Centre on the north shore, you can enjoy lakeside walks near the National Museum.

While in Canberra, visit the  National Gallery ,  Old Parliament Buildings , and  Questacon  located on the south side of the lake. This gallery is a true national gem and a definite must-see in Canberra. Take a stroll along the spacious tree-lined streets to the Old Parliament House, which offers a glimpse into colonial Australia, spanning from royal visits to beekeeping.

Already Know What You Need?

Adelaide hills.

Just 45 minutes from the city centre, the rugged Adelaide Hills area is an excellent road trip destination for those who don’t want to spend their entire weekend away in the car.

Start your getaway at the spectacular Mount Lofty lookout, with a stunning panorama across the entire city, with Gulf St Vincent in the distance. Turning your back on the big smoke, plunge down into Cleland Conservation Park with its plethora of bushwalks and hikes into dense forest. Don’t miss the sensational waterfalls! Once you’re done, head to nearby Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens, home to perfectly manicured gardens and immaculate displays of Australian natives.

Be sure to visit the historic town of Hahndorf, which was settled by German migrants in the 1830s and still retains a strong German influence today. There’s plenty of German food outlets, with a dizzying array of pretzels, schnitzels, sauerkraut, pork knuckles, and wursts, and German-style beer halls too. Architecture fans shouldn’t miss the two historic sandstone churches here, while art lovers can’t go past The Cedars, just outside of town. It’s the home and studio of Sir Hans Heysen, a famous Australian watercolour artist. Sir Heysen lived and worked in the house until his death in 1968, and guided tours are available.

Also near Hahndorf is the excellent Beerenberg Farm, home to some of Australia’s best jams and chutneys. During the picking season (October through May), you can even pick your own strawberries! There’s also many other top-notch artisan producers in the Adelaide Hills, such as Chocolate @ No 5 in Hahndorf, Melba’s Chocolate Factory in Woodside, the Woodside Cheese Wrights, and Cherrytime Orchard – all of which make perfect accompaniments for any romantic weekend getaways Adelaide.

Adelaide Hills Winery - Weekend Getaways From Adelaide - South Australia Road Trips

Of course, no visit to the Adelaide Hills is complete without visiting some of the excellent wineries. There’s over 50 cellar doors in the area, and if you’ve got the whole weekend available, spending an entire day visiting various wineries is highly recommended. Some of the best Adelaide Hills wineries include Shaw & Smith, Cobb’s Hill, Bird in Hand, Sinclair’s Gully, Hahndorf Hill, and Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard. And in the unlikely event you start to tire of the excellent Adelaide Hills wine, there’s craft brewers and boutique gin distilleries to check out as well.

Birdwood & Gumeracha

For the final day of a weekend getaway in the Adelaide Hills, be sure to head for the northern area of the Hills, up around Birdwood and Gumeracha. Birdwood is home to the excellent Australian National Motor Museum, home to many excellent displays on the history of Australian cars, while at Gumeracha you’ll find the world’s largest rocking horse! Underneath the horse is a wooden toy factory, which is great to visit with kids.

Looking for somewhere to stay?

Barossa valley.

One of the best short trips from Adelaide is heading north out of the city, into the Barossa Valley. The Barossa, as it’s commonly referred to, is one of Australia’s best-known wine regions, home to world-famous wines and mesmerising scenery. Just a short drive from Adelaide (it’s only an hour from the city to the Valley), the Barossa Valley is centred around the towns of Lyndoch, Tanunda, and Nuriootpa. With outstanding produce to go with some of Australia’s best wines, it’s hard to beat the Barossa for SA short holidays.

Spend your days tasting the incredible wines on offer, particularly Shiraz which has been cultivated in the area for over 170 years! Some of the standout wineries include famous names like Penfolds, Wolf Blass, Peter Lehmann, Yalumba, Jacob’s Creek, Seppeltsfield, and many others. One great idea for your Barossa Valley road trip from Adelaide is to take a full-day winery tour from one of the many local operators. In addition to visiting the big names, they’ll take you to up-and-coming wineries, and some of the hidden gems too.

Food and Sculpture

Barossa Produce - SA Short Stays - South Australia Road Trips

While in the Nuriootpa area, don’t forget to check out the Maggie Beer Farm Shop. Run by Maggie Beer, a beloved Australian TV chef, her range of jams, chutneys, sauces, and of course signature verjuice is delightful and a must-do for any cook. Not far away you’ll find the Barossa Sculpture Park, with an interesting collection of outdoor sculptures. It sits on a hilltop with an excellent view of the Barossa’s rolling vineyards, and is a great spot for a romantic picnic.

Clare Valley

Just north of the Barossa Valley is another of the great South Australian road trips destinations, the Clare Valley. Smaller than the Barossa, but no less interesting, the Clare Valley is renowned for excellent wine and more wonderful scenery. It’s just under two hours drive from central Adelaide, and is definitely one of the best weekend getaways from Adelaide.

Wineries and the Riesling Trail

Wineries - Short Trips From Adelaide - South Australia Road Trips

The Clare Valley is home to the best riesling wines in Australia, with highly regarded producers like Taylors, Kilikanoon, Sevenhill Cellars, Annie’s Lane, and Jim Barry Wines all hailing from the area. With a whole weekend to explore, one tantalising idea is to follow the Riesling Trail, a 35 kilometre pedestrian and cycling track that runs the entire length of the valley. It stops at most of the major wineries, and is largely separate from roadways – a huge plus for the safety conscious. Bike hires are available in both Auburn and Clare, while many Airbnbs and hotels will have bikes to use as well. If you’re not in the mood for cycling, guided tours are also a great option, for seeing a variety of wineries and a touch of inside knowledge.

Staying Longer on the Fleurieu Peninsula?

Spring gully conservation park.

It’s hard to beat a great bush sunset, and Clare Valley is home to a spectacular one, at Blue Gum lookout in Spring Gully Conservation Park near Sevenhill. Bring a picnic blanket, a bottle of riesling, and some local delicacies to watch the sun sink slowly into the valley hills. It’s a beautiful sight – and if you’re lucky, a curious kangaroo or echidna might just decide to join your picnic!

Fleurieu Peninsula

One of the most popular spots for romantic getaways South Australia is the Fleurieu (pronounced FLOO-ree-ooh) Peninsula, an hour’s drive south of Adelaide. Showcasing top-notch wines, pristine coastline, rugged bushland and interesting towns, Fleurieu is a beautiful place and home to some of the best road trips from Adelaide.

McLaren Vale

If you’ve got multiple nights available, be sure to spend at least a full day exploring the magnificent wineries of McLaren Vale, another of the world-class wine regions in South Australia. Take a locally-run day tour, visiting the highlight wineries like d’Arenberg, Hugh Hamilton, Hardy’s, Mitolo, and Coriole, but also dropping in at lesser-known gems. While you’re at d’Arenberg, be sure to check out their incredible glass Rubik’s Cube building – three storeys high, and home to several restaurants and tasting rooms!

Carrickalinga Beach - Weekend Getaways from Adelaide - South Australia Road Trips

After a long day of wine tasting, spend the next day of your weekend getaway from Adelaide splashing in the superb waters of the Peninsula. Carrickalinga Beach is a particular highlight, with glistening white sand and rolling breakers, while there’s an onshore reef at Normanville that’s just perfect for snorkelers. If you’re into fishing and scuba diving be sure to check out Second Valley Beach. On the eastern side of the peninsula Goolwa and Middleton Beaches are great surfing destinations. Those on family short trips from Adelaide will also appreciate Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot, with a sheltered bay, lifeguards, and gentle waves.

National and Conservation Parks

Not a fan of the water? Fleurieu Peninsula still has plenty to offer, particularly the spectacular Onkaparinga National Park. Featuring stunning gorges, cliffs, and remote bushland, it’s a great place for bushwalking and hiking. There’s also the Deep Creek Conservation Park, home to 15 walking trails and superb coastal views. With such a stunning variety of options, Fleurieu Peninsula is definitely one of the best weekend getaways from Adelaide.

Day Trips to Kangaroo Island

Located about four hours (drive and ferry ride) south-west of Adelaide, just off the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island is a spectacular spot and one of the best SA short holidays available. With such a long drive (and a ferry across to the island), it’s perfect for staying one or two nights and enjoying everything the island has to offer. There’s vast stretches of untamed wilderness, fantastic animals, historic buildings, and even – of course! – a few wineries.

Staying on K I Longer

Seal bay conservation park.

Start your Kangaroo Island road trip by visiting Seal Bay Conservation Park, on the southern coastline. It’s home to a huge colony of Australian sea lions, who spend their days lying around on the beach and cruising through the water. They’re very cute and fantastic to see up close, and are a genuine highlight of the island. Note that the Conservation Park is only available on official government-run guided tours, which must be booked in advance.

Flinders Chase National Park

Remarkable Rocks - Flinders Chase National Park - SA Short Trips - South Australia Road Trips

Afterwards, take your road trip west to the magnificent Flinders Chase National Park, the second-oldest national park in South Australia. There’s some stunning features here like Admiralty Arch and the Remarkable Rocks, but there’s plenty of bushland, thick forests, sheer cliffs, and loads of wildlife too. There was a severe bushfire that ravaged the landscape in 2019/2020, but the forests are recovering quickly and it’s heartening to see the kangaroos, koalas and platypus returning.

Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park

On your Kangaroo Island road trip, be sure to stop by Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park (formerly known as Parndana Wildlife Park), which is home to plenty of Australian animals. There’s cuddly koalas, wombats, snakes, roos, and much more. If you’re in the mood for getting even closer, hands-on experiences are also available for an extra fee.

Produce and Wineries

Finally, round out your visit to the Island with some of the incredible produce available. Kangaroo Island is a bee sanctuary, and home to some of Australia’s best honey producers like Clifford’s Honey Farm, and Island Beehive. Naturally, excellent seafood is available, freshly caught from the ocean and awaiting your picnic or romantic night in. Be sure to check out the oysters, abalone, and marron, accompanied by a glass of wine (or two!) from one of Kangaroo Island’s great wineries.

Day Trips to Murraylands

Heading to the east, there’s plenty of great options for weekend getaways from Adelaide in the Murraylands area. Stretching along the banks of Australia’s longest river, the mighty Murray, the Murraylands region covers a wide area and has plenty to offer. The main regional city, Murray Bridge, is just an hour’s drive from central Adelaide and is a great place to start your weekend getaway. The town is pleasant and historic, with a variety of shops and cafes to explore. Don’t miss the Murray Bridge bunyip in Sturt Reserve, with its fascinating history!

Monarto Safari Park

On your way into Murraylands, be sure to stop at Monarto Safari Park (formerly known as Monarto Zoo). It’s Australia’s largest open-range zoo, and packed full of both African animals like lions, cheetah and giraffe, plus Australian favourites like wallabies, Tasmanian devils and kangaroos as well. You can even have a close-up experience with some of the animals, which is great fun for the whole family.

The Bend Motorsport Park

If your road trip needs an injection of speed, it’s hard to top Tailem Bend Motorsport Park! Just near the town of Tailem Bend, this purpose-built racing complex offers everything from hot laps to go-karting, off-roading to time trials. It might not be the most romantic weekend getaway destination, but it’s definitely one of the most exhilarating!

The Murray River , Lakes and Coorong

Lake Alexandrina - Murraylands - South Australia Road Trips

For a complete change of pace, turn your road trip into a boat trip! The sedate waters of the Murray are plied by cruise boats and paddle steamers, offering short trips, full day cruises, and overnight excursions as well. It’s a great way to see various parts of the river that are inaccessible by road, and some of the scenery is absolutely magnificent. A little further south, the Murray empties into enormous Lakes Alexandrina and Albert. The other option is the beautiful Coorong. There’s excellent water sport opportunities on both the lakes and the Coorong, so bring your kayak, your fishing rod, and your water skis, and make the most of your South Australian road trip through the Murraylands.

If you’re heading a bit further afield, one opportunity for an excellent road trip from Adelaide is spending a few days in the Riverland. Located about 2.5 hours drive north-east of Adelaide, centred on the Murray River around the area of Loxton, Berri and Renmark, the Riverland is home to magnificent scenery and some excellent produce.

Murray River National Park

Start your road trip through the area by visiting the Murray River National Park. It’s a huge area of wetlands and bush, centred on the river itself. Home to thousands of species of fish, birds and land animals, there’s plenty of hiking, fishing, camping and canoeing opportunities in the park. The most impressive section is around Katarapko, though Lyrup Flats and Bulyong are both superb as well.

After getting among nature in the National Park, pick yourself up with some fresh fruit from the Berri area. It’s one of the country’s best-known fruit growing regions, particularly for citrus and stone fruits like apples and cherries. Be sure to stop by Aggie’s Fresh Fruit Stall and Tony & Effie’s Fruit Stall in Glossop, while in nearby Berri you’ll find fresh coffee beans, bread, local wine and gin, and craft beer as well.

Houseboating

Houseboat - Weekend Getaways from Adelaide - South Australia Road Trips

And when you’re all stocked up with tasty supplies, it’s time to get out on the water. The Riverland is one of the best places in Australia to rent a houseboat, which doesn’t require a special license to operate. Spend a day or two tootling up and down the river, exploring wherever the currents take you! Out on the water, operating on your own time, and with nobody for miles to bother you – it’s one of the best romantic weekend getaways Adelaide has to offer.

How to find the best weekend spots for a Sydney getaway? Simple - follow the locals

From wine country to scenic coastal escapes, find your perfect Sydney weekend getaway. Photo / 123rf

The secret is out. These are the weekend destinations that Sydnesiders love to visit, writes Sudeshna Ghosh

Sydney may be the city that keeps on giving with its vibrant, ever-evolving urban attractions, but do you know what is - arguably - the best part about the metropolis? The raft of perfect weekend getaways that are a conveniently short distance away.

From some of the best beaches in Australia to mystical mountain escapes, there are some spectacular destinations less than two hours’ drive from the city - and there is something for every kind of traveller.

Although the one thing you’re guaranteed in each of these places is spectacular scenery and nature at its finest. Here’s where to go when you want to extend your Sydney trip with a couple of days of R&R.

For a gourmet getaway

Hunter valley.

This picturesque collection of villages may be Australia’s oldest continuous winegrowing region but the food and wine scene here is nothing but contemporary. You may come here for the Semillon - the signature varietal of the region, of which you can find excellent iterations at cellar doors like Thomas Wines, Brokenwood and Peter Drayton - but you will stay for the cool, creative food being served up at local gourmet hotspots.

Head to award-winning Yellow Billy restaurant to discover farm-to-fork dining at its finest - a large percentage of the produce is grown at the on-site garden, and most of the food is licked by fire at either the parrilla grill or the fire pit. While the charred smoky meat courses are delicious, the vegetable dishes can be revelatory.

At the hatted (awarded) Spicers Eremo restaurant, local produce is showcased in modern Italian dishes that are as elegant as the decor. And for a change of pace, prepare to be surprised by the delicious pan-Asian on offer at Lucky Duck - what started as a pop-up concept in the shabby chic setting of event venue Leaves and Fishes ended up being so popular, they’ve become a permanent part of the Hunter Valley culinary landscape.

And for an unforgettable degustation experience, EXP serves up inventive mod Oz cuisine highlighting local produce - the complex flavours and considered presentation are truly up there among the best restaurants in the world.

Of course, no trip to wine country is complete without a long, lazy winery lunch and no one does it quite like the iconic Bistro Molines - the experience of rustic-style French food in the Provencal-style setting of the sprawling restaurant overlooking the vineyards transports you straight to France.

Check into the centrally located Lane Retreat at Bimbadgen estate for a wine country stay that is as stylish as it is comfortable - think standalone studios with vineyard views and in-room breakfast hampers.

For a tailored, locally led wine tour that encompasses the best of the region, check out Grape to Glass tours.

For nature and wellness

Spicers sangoma retreat, blue mountains.

The greater Blue Mountains region spans over 11,000km, but to experience a slice of the best it has to offer, head to this adults-only luxury retreat nestled amidst wilderness in a quiet end of the region - which is close enough to the city to allow views of the skyline on a clear day.

The resort whispers pampering, with its atmospheric design featuring earthy materials and moody lighting, subtly accented with thoughtful art and artefacts throughout its eight open-plan suites and common areas.

Tailored wellness activities from local practitioners make the most of the natural setting - whether it’s an indulgent treatment in the private spa tent soundtracked by birdsong or cicadas, depending on the time of day, or a transformative walking meditation amidst the surrounding bush.

The indulgence continues through to other activities such as wine and cheese tastings in the cosy lounge room, and the gourmet degustation meals on offer at hatted restaurant Amara where the plentiful produce of the surrounding regions is celebrated.

You could head out to explore more popular parts of the Blue Mountains, such as the Three Sisters lookout and its surrounding attractions - armed with a packed picnic - but the option of filling your days with gentle bushwalks and sitting by a roaring fire (or in the warmer weather, on the expansive outdoor decks) with a book could be just the reset you need.

For country charm

Southern highlands.

Lush rolling hills, country gardens, picturesque Georgian villages … you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in rural England, but this arcadian region is only around a 110 minutes’ drive from Sydney city.

Well-preserved villages like Berrima, Bowral, Moss Vale and Mittagong serve up a dash of historic charm with their architecture, antique shops and art galleries and studios.

The region is also home to some excellent restaurants, cafes and traditional pubs - complete with roaring fires in the cooler months - including hatted Thai eatery Paste, and French fine dining venue Eschalot. Perhaps the best kept secret of this region is its small but mighty cool climate wine industry - head to local wineries like Centennial Vineyard and Peppergreen estate for wine tastings and food to match.

Choose to be active, taking advantage of the many walking and cycling trails around the surrounding national parks and waterfalls such as Fitzroy falls and Fairy Bower falls, or, embrace the slow life, with art galleries and garden tours. If you only do one thing, make it to the impressive design destination that is Bundanon museum.

While there is no dearth of boutique country house hotels in this region, one of the most luxurious is the award-winning Osborn House where you can expect uniquely designed rooms amidst landscaped gardens, gourmet food and indulgent day spa experiences.

For beach and bush adventures

Sholahaven coast.

The shoreline south of Sydney, known among insiders as the south coast, spans over 400km, but an accessible way to experience the best of this beloved region is to make a beeline for Shoalhaven - the upper part of the south coast if you will - home to legendary beaches such as Jervis Bay (which is technically its own territory) and Hyams Beach, where the whiteness of the sand competes with the turquoise water for beauty points.

But that’s not all this scenic region has up its sleeve - it is home to some spectacular hinterland, making for adventure options galore, whether it’s mountain biking, rock climbing or bushwalking. On water too, there’s snorkelling, diving and dolphin-spotting opportunities aplenty.

Check in to Bangalay luxury villas, located just minutes from the beach, for a relaxing, private stay, and regional dining at its finest at the award-winning onsite restaurant.
