1. Best cycling holidays (and routes) in England

Lake district.

Cyclist on the Hardknott Pass, Lake District

Beautiful but brutal, stunning but savage. Just an example of how many cyclists feel about riding in the Lake District.

The area is spoken about in cycling circles all over Europe thanks mainly to the famous Fred Whitton Challenge annual sportive that takes in some iconic killer climbs. At 180 kilometres in length with a cumulative elevation of around 3,500 metres it is a test for anyone and includes the well-known passes of Kirkstone, Hardknott, Honister and Wrynose plus many more challenging ascents.

Set around the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, and skirting the well-known waters of Coniston, Windermere and Ullswater the route showcases the magnificence of the Lake District National Park which covers over 850 square miles of breathtaking countryside.

As a major tourist destination in its own right this UNESCO World heritage area has over 3,500 places to stay, is well known for its lakes, forests and fells and for the Cumberland sausage. It also has more microbreweries than any other county in England.

Of course you don’t have to ride the full Fred Whitton course if you don’t want to but at least you can try one or two of the passes whilst you’re there to get the feel. But beware if you choose to ride Hardknott as the gradient ramps up to around 30% in parts!

Yorkshire Dales

Cycling around Malham Tarn

The Yorkshire Dales is home to some of the best road cycling in the UK. It has proudly hosted both the Tour de France and the UCI World Championships in recent years. Partly as a result of this, it has risen to prominence as a must-visit cycling destination in the UK. When you stand back and admire the stunning, wild countryside complete with its ferocious gradients and rapid descents, it’s not hard to see the attraction.

It’s easy to lose yourself as you meander along remote country lanes catching glimpses of Roman remains, craggy cliffs and villages that appear to have got stuck in time.

It can be bleak, cold, wet and miserable at times and the roads can be grippy. But if you want to test your fitness and mental resolve, a cycling camp in Yorkshire should be part of your annual training schedule.

Try the famous passes of the Buttertubs and Kidstones or the long winding ascent of Greets Moss. Once you’ve tried Yorkshire’s cycle routes you will be back for more!

Peak District

Peak District cycling route Winnts Pass

The Peak District spans 550 square miles and is one of the most visited country parks in the UK. Yet it can also be a perfect hideaway for a UK cycling holiday that lets you get away from it all while sampling some of Derbyshire’s best cycle routes. Ancient stone villages, connected by hundreds of miles of stone walls, lie beside stately homes, caves and huge reservoirs.

The northern Dark Peak is characterised by bleak and exposed moorland and rocky outcrops whilst to the south, the White Peak consists of limestone dales. There are no mountains but the area is like a giant roller coaster, forcing you up short, sharp inclines and then rapid, twisting descents.

The most famous climb in the area is Winnats Pass, just outside the town of Castleton. It’s a fearsome one mile ascent that cuts its way through two huge steep-sided grass banks, with a gradient that touches 20% in parts. Struggle to the top and then descend the iconic Mam Tor down to the village of Edale.

Surrey Hills

Views back across the valley, halfway up Box Hill by bike

The 2012 London Olympics road race put the Surrey Hills, and in particular Box Hill, firmly on the world cycling map. The race looped around the county before returning back to the capital for its sprint finish.

However the cycling routes of Surrey have been a favoured location for amateur cyclists for many decades. The area is renowned for its steep hills and sharp descents, all set in an area designated as one of outstanding natural beauty. You can ride along quiet country lanes, through forests and visit picture-postcard villages as you navigate through some of the finest real estate in the country.

Whilst Box Hill is the most well-known of the climbs, with its famous Zig Zag road, it is by no means the hardest of the climbs in the area particularly when set against the likes of White Down Lane, Leith Hill and Barhatch Lane. If you fancy reccing the RideLondon route Surrey is a great choice for a UK cycling weekend – just make sure you bring your climbing legs!

Brighton pier

Brighton has for many years been a popular stomping ground for cyclists, and has plenty to offer on top of the annual London to Brighton charity ride. It’s also a wonderful seaside resort, complete with pier and Georgian seafront terraces. If you’re looking for a road cycling holiday in the UK then Brighton is a good place to base yourself.

With easy access to the eastern fringes of the South Downs, and the rolling hills of the High Weald, you can quickly be out of town and cycling on some of the quietest road routes in the UK. But if you prefer somewhere flatter then there’s plenty to explore in Brighton itself or make you way out along the coastline and explore the historic and picturesque villages on route.

For the avid climbers out there you can test yourself on the well-known ascents of the nearby Ditchling Beacon and Devils Dyke. At the summit of the latter you can see for miles and are rewarded with tremendous views across the South Downs.

South Downs

The top of the Beacon Hill climb, South Downs, UK

We love the South Downs’ gorgeous English countryside, quiet country roads and quaint villages. For us, these things make the South Downs National Park countryside around Winchester one of the best places to cycle in the UK.

The terrain is a mixture of gentle rolling roads with some aggressive and sharp climbs that can appear totally unannounced, as you navigate your way around the twisting lanes. Whether you’re on a flat stretch or climbing in the smallest gear, the one thing that you are guaranteed for certain is the ability to enjoy the remarkable panorama of the English countryside.

From splendid cathedrals to ancient market towns to the quintessential English pub and old tea shops, you will definitely feel at home in this part of the world as you pedal along on some of the best road bike routes in the UK.

Isle of Wight

Golden sands with bicycle in front of railings at Ventnor esplanada

It’s perhaps not that well known, but the Isle of Wight has been branded as the ‘cycle island’ boasting 200 miles of cycling routes, an annual festival and a sportive that circumnavigates the entire island.

Lying just off the south coast of England, just an 8 minute hovercraft journey from the mainland, this beautiful and picturesque island makes the perfect place for cycling holidays in the UK. The island is a popular place for holiday makers, so there’s lots to do for those not on a bike – from the attractive Victorian seaside towns, to historical monuments such as Osborne House and spectacular coastal walking trails.

If you don’t fancy the lap of the island, you can make use of some easy cycle routes along the myriad of traffic free cycle paths. Perhaps followed by an afternoon on the beach and a few hours exploring the iconic Needles cliffs and the harbour at Cowes.

View down to a classic Cornish beach

Cycling in Cornwall is generally known for two things. Amongst those taking on Land’s End to John O’Groats, Cornwall is feared as a rollercoaster start to the ride – the gruelling first couple of leg-sapping short sharp hills on steep-sided lanes.

Amongst those looking for family cycling holidays in the UK, Cornwall is synonymous with the Camel Trail. This traffic-free route runs 18km along the River Camel between Padstow and Bodmin. There’s then an additional, harder 9km to Blisland on Bodmin Moor. There are lots of place to hire bikes and places to stop, so the 18km stretch is particularly great for kids.

However, there are a lot of other great cycling routes in Cornwall too.

Those in Cornwall on holiday with the family, there are the Mineral Tramways Trails and, around St Austell, the Clay Trails.

Road and gravel cyclists should check out the Cornish Way, a 288km route along the length of Cornwall. 47 kilometres are off-road, but the remainder is on-road, designed to avoid major roads and take in as many historic towns, fishing villages, moor and mining landscapes as possible. There are six individual trails that make up the Cornish Way, helping you to break up the route should you wish.

You can ride the Cornish Way in either direction. The east to west route gives the sense of achievement of arriving at Land’s End. There are also various different route options that make up the 288km route (around Bude you can go along the very hilly coastline and just before Bodmin, you can detour north to Padstow instead of South to St Austell).

2. Best cycling holidays (and routes) in Scotland

Scottish highlands.

Applecross Pass viewpoint, top of Bealach na Ba, NC500 cycle route Scotland

The North Coast 500 brings together some of the most beautiful coastal terrain in the northern highlands. It’s a true test of fitness and endurance for any cyclist.

Choose when you want to complete the route and in how many days.

Soak up the wilderness as you ride along many single track roads and trails, through seaboard villages and rugged countryside.

The North Coast route is a circular ride, starting and finishing in the village of Tornapress. The route includes the fearsome 9 kilometre ascent of Bealach na Ba, described by some as the best cycling climb in Great Britain. It feels a bit like a typical Alpine mountain pass, with several hairpins and 20% gradients. It also offers stunning views over the nearby Isle of Skye.

Undoubtedly one of the best places to cycle in the UK, and ideal for a UK-based cycling holiday.

Scottish Borders

Peebles, on the Tour o the Borders Scottish cycling route

Big, wide open spaces where you can see for miles. Heather covered hills and acre upon acre of woodland, lochs and rivers.

This is Scottish border country and the home of some of the best cycling routes in Scotland.

The area’s pièce de résistance is the famous Talla Wall climb. Leaving the village of Tweedsmuir with the reservoir on your right you will find this testing little ascent. It’s only 1.8 kilometres in length but packs a big punch – an average gradient of 8.3% which tops out in places at 24.9%.

The Tour O’ the Borders is the local sportive that’s staged each September. It starts and finishes in the town of Peebles and includes the Talla Climb. Your next weekend cycling break in the UK sorted?!

3. Best cycling holidays (and routes) in Wales

Llanberis Pass in the Snowdonia National Park, an exceptional cycling route

In the north west corner of Wales lies a dramatic mix of Celtic culture, rugged mountain scenery and coastal vistas. It’s all woven into 2,000 square kilometres of delightfully varied landscape.

The centrepiece of the park is Mount Snowdon, which rises from sea level to 1,085 metres and is the highest mountain in England and Wales. It can’t be crested on a road bike but there are plenty of sensational road cycling routes in Wales, including a loop that circles the base of the mountain.

Starting and finishing in the old mining town of Llanberis, the route takes you to the coastal town of Caernarfon, where you can detour to see the famous castle. Then it’s on to the Llanberis Pass, as you ride around the famous Snowdon horseshoe.

Brecon Beacons

Cycling route through the Brecon Beacons Wales

The Brecon Beacon National Park is a protected area of stunning wild moorland which runs from the Black Mountain in the west, through the Beacons and the Usk valley, to the Black Mountains in the east.

Comprising bare, grassy moorland with an abundance of reservoirs, caves and waterfalls you will likely see more mountain sheep and ponies than fellow travellers in this remote part of south Wales.

The infamous Dragon Ride is one of the toughest sportives held in the UK, and is held in the area. The Dragon Devil route is challenging to say the least with 5,000 metres of climbing over 300 kilometres including the fearsome ascents of the Devils Staircase and Elbow. So if you like your road cycling routes to be challenging you know what to earmark for your next UK cycling weekend with your mates!

4. Best cycling holidays (and routes) in Ireland

Giants causeway.

Giants Causeway Ireland

In the north east of Northern Ireland lies the Giant’s Causeway and the Antrim coastline. It’s world famous and a holiday destination in its own right. Why not bring your bike and make it a cycling holiday?!

Okay, you’ll need to be prepared for the fact it rains a fair bit and sometimes the wind howls in off the Atlantic Ocean, but you would be hard pressed to find a more beautiful and testing area to ride your bike.

If the weather is fine it’s even better as the views of the sea from the rugged coastline of high cliffs are simply spectacular. The tough and energy sapping Torr Head Road, with its numerous hills and sharp descents coming one after the other is like riding a giant roller coaster.

Take a look at the Giants Causeway Sportive and its ‘Giant Killer’ route of 187 kilometres which is one of the best cycling routes in Ireland (like the Dragon Ride, we included it in our best sportives write up, here ).

Wild Atlantic Way

View across the coast of Ireland and the Wild Atlantic Way cycle route

For those wanting a really big test, and the opportunity to try one of the world’s best cycling routes, the 2,500 kilometre Wild Atlantic Way lies in wait.

This route offers a big endurance test, passing through seven of Ireland’s westernmost counties.

With the fearsome and choppy Atlantic Ocean as your constant companion as you traverse the western coastline, the route takes you the length of the island passing through famous landmarks, heritage sites, traditional villages and rolling countryside.

There are a number of organised events which take in all or part of the route, but whichever you choose you are largely on your own. You’ll need to be self-sufficient as well as fit.

Wicklow Mountains

Mist covered hills of the Wicklow Mountains, Ireland

Just 30 minutes from Dublin, Ireland’s Wicklow Mountains are a haven for cyclists.

They’re home to the tough Wicklow 200 sportive, but are also great for less avid cyclists who just want to explore Ireland’s largest national park.

If you’re with non-cyclists, there is plenty for them to keep them occupied (Dublin, the ancient monastic city of Glendalough…) while you take on the region’s tangled network of minor roads.

If you love to climb, don’t miss the Shay Elliott climb, named after Ireland’s famous Seamus “Shay” Elliott.

A couple of fantastic areas you should consider that are not on your list. Lake District, home of the legendary Fred Whitton Challenge, and the North Pennines, virtually empty roads with bags of challenging and beautiful climbs, just happens to be sandwiched between two of the most popular National Parks.

I agree with you – Lake District is awesome and is in fact number one on our list! Great shout for the North Pennines – the UK has so many gems, doesn’t it?!

Edinburgh to Harrogate – the Cycling UK founding route

In the 1870s, cycling was becoming increasingly popular in the UK, with around 40 bicycle clubs for racing and social cycling. However there was no club for cycle tourists.

Argyll to Aberdeen by Mark Beaumont

Another Cycling UK member from Scotland who is no stranger to long rides, is Mark Beaumont, the current record holder for circumnavigating the world by bike in 78 days and 14 hours. Coast to coast rides don’t come more stunning nor gritty than this Argyll to Aberdeen 240 miler which Mark rode non-stop - but it is perhaps enjoyed better over multiple days!

Newcastle to Edinburgh via Lindisfarne by Laura Laker

Cycling journalist and Cycling UK member, Laura Laker, shares fond memories of getting lost leaving Newcastle as she rode with her friend to Edinburgh via Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle, but with our GPX file route that shouldn't be a problem if you're planning on a ride along this stunning and tempestuous stretch of the Northumberland coast.

London-Wales-London by Audax UK

Audax UK — the national organisation for non-competitive long-distance cycle rides — reveals the route of one of its favourite rides: the slightly tongue-in-cheek labelled 'London-Wales-London'. This lanesy route from Chalfont St Peter, to Chepstow and back via Malmesbury, Lambourne and Henley is 400km is gently rolling with only a couple of tough climbs. It can be done non-stop in true audax style, but there's no harm in breaking it up into stages either.

Bealach na Ba loop by Lee Craigie

Lee Craigie is part of The Adventure Syndicate , a Cycling UK affiliated group . It is a collective of female endurance cyclists whose aim is to increase levels of self-belief and confidence in others (especially in women and girls) by telling inspiring stories, creating an encouraging community and delivering enabling workshops and training. Here's one of her favourite loops in the Highlands taking in the iconic and challenging climb of Bealach na Ba that starts at sea level and rises to 626m in 9km.

Isle of Wight by Jack Elton-Walters / Cyclist.co.uk

As a native Islander, Cyclist.co.uk website editor Jack Elton-Walters knows the Isle of Wight is best seen from two wheels. Here he reveals his favourite route which will be slightly different to your usual loop. Possible at a push in one day, break it up over two for a relaxing ride that takes in the best of one of the UK's sunniest spots.

The Hebridean Way

The Hebridean Way stretches from Barra to the Butt of Lewis and has it all: stunning white beaches, dramatic mountain landscape, flat boggy landscape, great and bad weather, standing stones to rival Stonehenge at Callanish, otters and of course Harris Tweed. A multi day route with only one significant climb, it would make a great introduction for those wanting an accessible but isolated cycle tour.

Devon Coast to Coast by Josie Dew

Coast to coast rides are justifiably popular in the UK, and here cycling author and Cycling UK vice-president Josie Dew reveals a coast-to-coast with a difference: across the beautiful county of Devon which she tackled with her young family (who she forgot to tell about the hills).

A spectacular week in Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Cairngorms

Gary Cummins is the Vice Chair of Cycling UK Scotland and leads tours for CTC Cycling Holidays and Tours. The route covers the often-overlooked northeast of Scotland including Dundee, Angus, Moray and Aberdeenshire. It’s suitable for fit cyclists who are willing to keep going at a steady pace and don’t mind climbing, descending and possibly challenging weather including headwinds. It takes in a mixture of roads, but most of the busier roads are on the first and last sections of the trip.

Land's End to John o' Groats (LEJOG or End to End)

Cycling from Land's End to John o' Groats is also known as doing the LEJOG or the 'end to end' is Cycling UK's most iconic route. Here we have two routes, the first is 971 miles and is aimed primarily at those wanting to the route relatively quickly. The second at 1024 miles is the original End to End YHA Route that was created many years ago when Youth Hostels were far more prevalent. This route stays very close to the original however there are some points along the way where you are no longer able to stay at a YHA and alternative accommodation would need to be sought. It is not the fastest route, but takes in quieter roads and as many hostel locations as possible.

Best UK cycling destinations: Six of my favourite places to ride

For those who don’t want to fly, there’s still world-class riding at home

uk staycation

January is a hateful month for those of us in the northern hemisphere. It’s cold, dark, wet, you haven’t got the indulgences of the festive period to look forward to anymore, and spring can feel a long way off. I can see why so many of us look to book a cycling holiday at this time of year; get something in the calendar, something to look forward to.

Where do you go then? For those of us in the UK, you may think Mallorca, eastern Spain, Tuscany, or the Alps. Always somewhere warm, somewhere south, somewhere far away. Amazing riding is to be had in all of these places for sure, but with it comes the stress of international travel, exacerbated further if you’re taking a bike with you, as well as a much larger carbon footprint.

If you’re looking to get away on the bike but don’t fancy going abroad then there are plenty of world-class riding destinations to be had all across the UK. The below is not an exhaustive list, but rather the ones I’ve been lucky enough to either live in or have ridden in extensively over the years. Unfortunately, that excludes Northern Ireland, so apologies in advance for that, but where possible I’ve included my own photos. If you’re reading this from outside the UK then these should be on your hitlist, and you should also check out our list of the best bike travel cases and our top tips for travelling with a bike .

a man in blue sunglasses takes a selfie on the cornish coast

Cornwall is where I grew up, and I believe it is the best place to ride a bike in England, if not the UK as a whole. There’s a saying down here that Cornish miles are worth 1.5x everywhere else, not because it’s blessed with giant, majestic hills, but more a result of how the elevation is delivered. Save for a few flat, family friendly sections of cycle path there isn’t a moment of flat, and on the coastal roads especially you are presented with repeated short, very steep climbs in and out of beautiful little villages.

I’ve done 120km days in the Alps, up the Col d’Iseran, and I can do a coastal route in Cornwall of equivalent length with more elevation gain. If you can stomach the climbing, though, you will be treated to some of the most beautiful views. Rugged coastline, scruffy vegetation, a sea breeze to clear your lungs, and a big pasty for lunch (Ann’s Pasties down the Lizard is the place to go). The roads aren’t the most well-maintained though, so fit some wider rubber and you’ll have a lot more fun.

a man in blue sunglasses takes a selfie on the cornish coast

The gravel riding is perhaps less inviting if you’re not used to it. There are certainly long, sustained rideable off road routes (see the West Kernow Way for starters), but they can be rocky and technical, especially on the coast path.

One tip would be to try and come outside of the peak holiday season; the county's road network is famously ill-equipped to deal with the volume of tourists that descend to the seaside towns every summer, and nothing ruins a coastal descent like having to slam on the brakes because two people in SUVs can’t get past each other on a single lane road.

A woman in a yellow jumper rides through a forest beside ponies

The New Forest

The New Forest is truly a paradise for chill gravel riding. The UK’s youngest, and smallest national park is criss-crossed by myriad undulating gravel tracks. None of them are overly rocky or technical, with most being wide and well graded. There aren’t any savage climbs to brag about, though the high points do command beautiful views, but to me the New Forest isn’t a place to go hunting KOMs.

The picture postcard hamlets, the free-roaming ponies and other wildlife, and the terrain itself all make for what is best described as ‘chill vibes’. Take it slow, have an actual holiday, go for a big pub lunch and then cycle somewhere else bucolic. The road sections are also very chilled, provided you aren’t on one of the main arterial routes, but it’s not really somewhere I’d say was a prime road destination.

Get yourself some big tyres, buy a fashionable bar bag, a coffee and a bun from The Woods Cyclery in Lyndhurst, and enjoy being in over 200 square miles of forest. As Billy Joel says:

“Slow down you crazy child. Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while. It's alright, you can afford to lose a day or two”

The scenic route through the Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales

If relaxed gravel pootling isn’t for you then how about riding in the only place in the UK to have had its own dedicated UCI stage race; the Tour de Yorkshire? One of my favourite cycling memories is sitting in the sun halfway up the Cow and Calf climb (or the Col du Ilkley Moor as I believe ASO insisted on calling it), yelling at Greg van Avermaet and his compatriots.

I lived in Leeds for the best part of a decade, and there are enough fantastic roads and climbs to warrant a separate article. My personal hit list for the best climbs would be Langbar, the Cow and Calf, the Chevin (both the main road and the old road are excellent), Norwood, and Greenhow. The riding is a world away from the relentless short up and down of Cornwall, but the climbs aren't so protracted as they are in the highlands of Scotland, and there are plenty of river valleys to ride down for some respite.

Hard road riding, but rewarding nonetheless, with excellent views and excellent pubs too. Try and tee up a café stop at Bolton Abbey on a sunny day and you’ll be met with an entire peloton’s worth of bikes leant up outside, and, if you decide to stay in Leeds, have pint for me at the Kirkstall Bridge Inn.

If you’re really looking for a challenging day out though, just south of the Yorkshire Dales is Halifax, home to the closest thing you’ll get to the Tour of Flanders outside of Belgium. Cobbled climbs, steep and greasy, through towns full of industrial heritage. Start up Shibden Wall and see how you go; they only get harder.

The Lake District

A mecca for hikers, nature lovers, fans of Beatrix Potter, and for those undertaking the Fred Whitton, cyclists too. Whether this stalwart of the UK sportive calendar is still the hardest out there (answers on a postcard) the full route is certainly extremely challenging. Long, drawn out, and steep, the famous climbs up Honnister et al are real leg-sappers, and the propensity for the National park to be wet and windy adds to the challenge if you get your timing wrong.

The central and south Lakes are the most famous areas, around Ambleside, Windermere, and Kendal. You can’t really go wrong here, though the roads will be busier in high season, and the gravel riding that’s also exceptional will be more full of hikers and walkers.

uk staycation

The further north you go the more likely you are to have the place to yourself, on or off road. The Skiddaw massif north of Keswick has some stunning roads, and the gravel riding up past Whitewater Dash and down into Mosedale is probably my favourite stretch of off-road riding in the nation. It’s hard going mind, be prepared to hike-a-bike at times. In all honesty, it’s best served by a mountain bike so bring your largest tyres, but I have seen it done on a cyclocross bike.

If you’re into food, too, Cumbria also has more Michelin stars than any other county outside London, though I recommend changing out of your Lycra before arriving for dinner! Fine dining aside, much like the Yorkshire dales you’re never too far from a decent pub to get a good meal in, and if you’re a fan of a wild swim there are more options than you can shake a stick at for refreshing detours.

uk staycation

Northwest Scotland

I am conscious that as ever in a UK best list there are far more English options than there are from the other nations. I am writing this from experience, rather than regurgitating what is said in travel guides, and as such, it is slightly limiting in scope, but more genuine I feel in terms of recommendations.

Northwest Scotland, by which I mean the west coast and Islands beginning with Skye and heading northwards, offer the most spectacular landscape you could ever hope for on two wheels. I can’t speak for the gravel, but the road sections are remote, imposing, and absolutely blissful. Amenities are few and far between, but they do exist, and what you sacrifice in regular pockets of civilisation you more than get back in extended periods of beautiful solitude.

The easiest way to see the best of the very north of the nation is to have a tilt at the North Coast 500. The route is easy to navigate, well serviced even for bicycle travel with shops and accommodation, and thanks to Scotland’s far better right-to-roam access, camping along the route is significantly easier if you want to bikepack it. The only other real traffic is other bicycles, camper vans, and supercars - not unlike Josh's experience in the Swiss Alps - which is a slightly odd experience if nothing else.

Likewise, the riding on Skye is also stunning, and while not part of the NC500 route it’s worth a visit in itself. It is the busiest of the islands though. A word of warning for all of this is beware to face the midges, and come prepared.

bike up a hill with a panoramic view

The Brecon Beacons

My Dad was from the coalfields of South Wales, and living in Bristol for three years the lumpy bottom end of Wales was the go-to destination for a really big day out. The Brecon Beacons are also home to a claim on the title of the UK’s toughest sportive (the Dragon Ride, in this case), so there’s plenty of inspiration there for riding.

The east-west range of hills offers up a duality of character on either flank. To the south, you have the industrial heartland of Wales, the countless mining towns that sadly had their purpose taken from them. To the north you have a more rural landscape, rolling fields and villages not founded on the extraction of black gold. If you want to see both I recommend heading over the climb from Llangynidr to Ebbw Vale. To the north, the Crickhowell to Brecon route, not on the main road is lovely too.

As per Halifax to the Yorkshire Dales, a little further east is the Wye Valley. This is a truly delightful cruise if you start it at Monmouth. Heading south you wind your way along the border, regularly flitting from England to Wales and back again. It’s the best kind of gentle riding, but the road isn’t that small so don’t expect traffic free. Great for an all-out effort too if you’ve got any legs left.

Will joined the Cyclingnews team as a reviews writer in 2022, having previously written for Cyclist, BikeRadar and Advntr. There are very few types of cycling he's not dabbled in, and he has a particular affection for older bikes and long lasting components. Road riding was his first love, before graduating to racing CX in Yorkshire. He's been touring on a vintage tandem all the way through to fixed gear gravel riding and MTB too. When he's not out riding one of his many bikes he can usually be found in the garage tinkering with another of them, or getting obsessive about tyres. Also, as he doesn't use Zwift, he's our go-to guy for bad weather testing... bless him.

England Cycling Tours: the Best Self Guided Bike Holidays

Explore england on an affordable cycling holiday.

If you're a fan of active travel and want to explore England on a cycling tour, you're in the right place. Here we list our top picks for the best self guided cycling holidays in England.

On these unforgettable bike trips in England, you'll discover the beautiful rolling countryside, charming villages, authentic food and beer, and that warm, good natured hospitality that England is renowned for. Experience the Cotswolds, become immersed in the Isle of Wight, admire the coast in Cornwall or even ride the iconic Cyclist's Coast to Coast trail . The key advantage of a self guided bike tour is that you can cycle at your own pace and take the time to truly discover the hidden secrets of the country via England's back roads.

Without a doubt, these are England's best self guided cycling tours where you'll have a fantastic time.

Cornish Cycle Tour

Taking a break at Cape Cornwall

Discover the famous seaside region of Cornwall in England's south west on an incredible cycling holiday. Highlights of this bike trip include seeing shipwrecks, eating cornish pasties, hearing the history of pirates and visiting sheltered coves.

Explore Cornwall your way on this 9 day self guided Cornish Cycle tour . It's graded as moderate to challenging, due to some hilly parts, however the beautiful rivers, castles and gardens are a fitting reward to this great bike holiday.

Cotswolds By Bike Tour

Quaint little town of Guiting Power, Cotswolds | John Millen

If you're yet to experience England's gorgeous countryside, the Cotswolds by Bike tour is the right trip for you. Spend your days cycling between village pubs and old coaching inns. Along the way, you'll absorb the charming features of the landscape: churches, gardens, Roman villas, regency buildings, fords, and cottages - all cobbled together by the intriguing English history.

This is what A Worsley from Australia had to say about their trip:

"My daughter and I have just completed a self guided bike trip of the Cotswolds in England. What a fantastic experience, challenge and adventure the 8 days provided. The scenery was breathtaking and the townships we rode through were magnificent. All the accommodation was excellent with luggage always greeting us at our destination... Thoroughly recommend this adventure and thank you to UTracks for an efficient and comprehensive booking service."

The Cyclist's Coast to Coast Tour

Cycling along the Coast to Coast in England | Andrew Bain

While perhaps more famous as a walking tour, the Coast to Coast trail can also be completed on a bike as well. Also known as Wainwright's Way, the Coast to Coast route covers the breadth of England, from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Cyclists can ride this trip in just 6 fun-filled days as they cross from Whitehaven to Tynemouth.

This is a challenging, and overly satisfying, cycling trip. There's much to see, including the Cumbrian Lakes and Fells, the bleak Pennines, beautiful Dales and many warm and inviting inns to welcome you at the end of each enjoyable day.

As a fun fact, this route is nicknamed the C2C, which stands for Sea to Sea rather than the often-thought Coast to Coast! This is because riding the Coast to Coast follows a slightly different trail to the walking version .

Isle of Wight Cycle Tour

Stunning Freshwater Bay

This is a lovely short cycling tour that fully explores the Isle of Wight in just 5 days. Due to the island's largely flat terrain, this ride is graded as introductory to moderate, and allows for plenty of free time to explore as you wish.

The route starts in Ryde and circumnavigates all of the glorious coastal views of the Isle of White. Discover the estuary around Newport and the old town of Yarmouth, marvel at Queen Victoria's Osborne House and take the time to soak in the island lifestyle, half of which has been designated an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The 11 Best Cycling Routes In The UK

best uk bike tours

With restrictions finally being lifted across the UK, it’s time to dust off the cobwebs, get back on two wheels, and see some sights again.

If you want to start planning a few cycling routes but aren’t sure where to go, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our selection of the 11 best cycling routes in the UK in 2021.

Table of contents

1. Snowdon, Wales 2. Tremadog Bay, Wales 3. Essex Rivers, Essex 4. The Severn Valley Country Park, Shropshire 5. The South Downs Way, Hampshire to Sussex 6. The Cheshire Cycleway (Route 70), Cheshire 7. Kirkaldy to Dundee via St Andrews, Scotland 8. Longniddry to Haddington, East Lothian 9. Trans Pennine Trail, Central UK 10. The Jurassic Coast, Dorset 11. Isle of Wight

1. Snowdon, Wales

best cycle routes uk

If you want to see high peaks, impressive mountains, and glass-clear dark lakes, a circuit of Snowdon using the Llanberis Pass is just the ticket. This route will provide you with picture-perfect views of the Welsh countryside’s trademark visceral beauty and tranquillity.

There’s a stunning 10-mile mountain bike route that starts in Llanberis, Snowdonia and climbs the Llanberis Path to Snowdon’s summit before returning down the same track.

This route is perfect for mountain bikers looking to trek up steep boulder trails that’ll provide a rigorous test of their riding skills.

However, it should be noted that Snowdon’s steep trails are popular with walkers and cyclists alike. Therefore, caution and awareness of your surroundings are especially paramount.

The Snowdon Voluntary Cycling Agreement outlines clear rules that cyclists must follow. They must not ride on three of the bridleways (Llanberis, Snowdon Ranger, and Rhyd Ddu paths) to the summit between 10 am and 5 pm from May until the end of September every year.

Although this may seem inconvenient, an early cycle to see the sunrise will give you the serotonin boost you’ve been missing.

2. Tremadog Bay, Wales

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Huw Rees Lewis (@huw_harlech)

Tremadog Bay is where the rocky hills of Snowdonia meet the sea and coastal breeze. So, if you’re craving a coastal view, this is your best bet.

Not only does Tremadog Bay host some astonishing sea views, but the roads around the Cader Idris provide some of Snowdonia’s best cycling routes.

The views from the bay stretch far and wide. You’ll see the medieval Criccieth Castle standing proud over Tremadog Bay, the Llyn Peninsula , and the mountains of Snowdonia.

3. Essex Rivers, Essex

Essex Rivers is a great route for those who want the gentler, more scenic bike rides. If you’re a busy Londoner wanting to escape frantic everyday life in the capital, this is the route for you.

Within this area, you can also visit the Flagship Country Park for plain sailing – it’s ideal for those looking to cycle with family.

The River Colne is a small river that runs through Essex and passes through Colchester. This has an estuary that joins the sea near Brightlingsea.

The Crouch to Blackwater tour is a circular, 22-mile-long route that goes through the villages of North Fambridge, Althorne, Latchingdon, Mundon, Maldon, Purleigh, and Cold Norton. Being able to tick off so many destinations and sights would provide any cyclist with a real sense of accomplishment.

4. The Severn Valley Country Park, Shropshire

The National cycle route 45, known as The Mercian Way, provides the perfect cycling route for families or groups with younger riders.

The journey crosses the River Severn itself, and there’s a park situated at Alverly along the river between Bridgnorth and Bewdley. Along the journey, there’s a visitor centre with a children’s play area.

Cyclists can follow the main pathway through the park, which is part of the cycle route. This runs through Hampton Load, partly off-road, and continues to Bridgnorth along the roads.

Once you’ve completed your ride, you can take a moment to relax and sample wonderful views from inside the visitor centre. Or you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat in the cafe .

While you're there, it's worth heading to the Severn Valley Railway station, another popular tourist attraction. The steam-hauled passenger train travels for 16 miles along the beautiful Severn Valley, running through Kidderminster, Bewdley, and Bridgnorth.

5. The South Downs Way, Hampshire to Sussex

The South Downs Way is an off-road, undulating mountain bike route teeming with history and picturesque sights. Although it runs through quite busy parts of the country, including the city of Winchester and the suburbs of Brighton, you’ll still sample plenty of countryside and feel like you’re getting away from it all.

On this route, you’ll discover woodland, farmland, rivers, and historical landmarks. You’ll either start or end in Winchester, where you’ll find Winchester Cathedral – the largest cathedral in Europe.

Along the route, you’ll find the Queen Elizabeth Country Park , a large area of beautiful mixed woodland that’s perfect for a break or picnic. You’ll also cycle past the eastern tip of the South Downs Way. Here, the hills meet the sea with a great white bow of rock at Beachy Head – a beautiful location that’s calling to be photographed and taken in.

Beachy Head is the highest chalk cliff on the South coast, and its wide-open land and sea views will take your breath away. It’s rumoured that, on a clear day, you could even see the border of France.

The 160km journey along the South Downs Way is the only UK's National Trail that’s fully navigable by bike.

In addition to the South Downs Way, there’s 1,200 km of car-free bridleways across the National Park that you can take advantage of.

There are also miles of leafy country lanes and old railway trails you can explore, including the Downs Link , Meon Valley Trail , and Centurion Way .

6. The Cheshire Cycleway (Route 70), Cheshire

The Cheshire Cycleway route was devised by members of the Chester and North Wales CTC – the national network of the UK’s largest and oldest Cyclists Touring Club. Therefore, you know it’s a route worth taking.

This route has a bit of everything, whether you want flat routes or exhilarating hills. There are backroads, rougher tracks, bridleways, canal towpaths and various sections of disused railway track to keep you on your toes.

The Cheshire Cycleway encompasses various tourist attractions but also provides miles of quiet roads. Tourist attractions include Lamaload Reservoir , the highest point on the Cycleway at 417 metres, and Parkgate , which was once a bustling port, later turned into a fashionable bathing spa.

The variety of terrain and the sheer number of routes leading from the main cycleway means that cyclists of all abilities can enjoy riding here. It’s just a case of choosing an appropriate area and mapping out your route before setting off.

7. Kirkaldy to Dundee via St Andrews, Scotland

best cycling routes uk

Known as the East Neuk 50 Cycle Route, this 50-mile route is one of Scotland's most rewarding bike rides.

It’s incredibly accessible compared to other routes in this list, as it starts and ends at train stations (Kirkaldy and Dundee, respectively).

It has one significant difference from other cycle routes, as it’s mostly segregated from other motor vehicles. This means you’ll be off the main road for much of the route, which follows cycle paths that were created as part of the project.

The journey was originally designed for tourists and allows visitors to take in the scope and beauty of the east coast of Fife, such as the stunning beaches and fishing ports.

The East Neuk was once the heart of the east coast of Scotland’s fishing trade. The tiny harbours along the East Neuk may now be home to more leisure boats than those landing lobster and crab, but the area’s fishing history gives it even more charm.

8. Longniddry to Haddington, East Lothian

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Julie (@julied.79)

Reachable by road or rail from Edinburgh, this is an easy cycle route that’s perfect for all cyclists. Along this route, you’ll see, Redhouse Castle , the 15 th -century tower house that can be seen from the railway station, and the Museum of Flight .

The route is mainly flat and not too hilly. As such, it’s a great option for beginners or those looking to ease into exercise after a long break.

If your journey starts at Longniddry train station, the start of the path is marked with a large sign announcing the distance to Haddington – roughly five miles.

Once you arrive in the town of Haddington, there are plenty of cafes you can visit for a bite to eat or a quick coffee to restore your energy levels.

9. Trans Pennine Trail, Central UK

best cycle routes uk

Everything that’s beautiful about the Pennines and its surrounding areas is evident in this cycle route.

The route’s central section starts in Leeds and runs to Chesterfield, the largest town in the UK.

Cyclists are advised to begin at the Royal Armouries, one of Britain's oldest museums situated along the River Aire.

Cyclist will travel for several miles along the traffic-free path next to the River Aire and the Aire Calder Navigation canal before the path connects to the railway path at Bottom Boat.

From here, you’ll continue to Rotherham, where you'll join the quiet roads into the Rother Valley and then move swiftly into Sheffield.

The Trans Pennine Trail leads directly into Sheffield's centre and out of it on cycle paths and quiet lanes.

A disused railway path takes you into Derbyshire. After travelling through Renishaw, you can either join the Chesterfield canal towpath or use the railway path and bridleways via Inkersall. Once in Chesterfield, make sure you visit the town's crooked spire church, which, rumour has it, the devil sat on to make it crooked. So, not only will you ride along an iconic route, you’ll witness a piece of supernatural history!

10. The Jurassic Coast, Dorset

You have plenty of options to choose from when you cycle along the Jurassic Coast.

From a gentle, tucked away ride to a faster-paced clifftop climb, this route offers something for everyone. Whether you’re getting mucky on an off-road hike or following a simple bypass, you'll be blown away by Dorset's exquisite and diverse scenery.

It's almost all rocky terrain with hills throughout the journey. This is certainly a ride that will work your quads and glutes if you feel like testing your strength and endurance.

Three routes explore the Jurassic Coast's history, geology, and wildlife:

 • Route one follows the cycle paths around Lodmoor Country park and Nature Reserve.
 • Route two is a longer route, leading into Weymouth Town Centre via its award-winning beach and 17th-century working harbour. This a perfect family cycle ride and picnic location.
 • Route three continues from Weymouth, joining the Rodwell Trail shortly before heading over to the Isle of Portland. Here, you can gaze at the many windsurfers, sailors, and kite surfers at this world-famous London 2012 Olympic water sports destination.

With wonderful coastal views, scenery, and historic landmarks, The Jurassic Coast has it all.

If you're in the area without a bike, there are plenty of bike rental shops to help you out.

11. Isle of Wight

From quiet villages to ocean and mainland panoramas, this route provides 62 miles of scenic joy. The relatively flat route is only accentuated by the Isle of Wight's peaceful charm.

There’s a range of cycling routes to suit everyone, whether you want to ride on challenging off-road paths or calming byways.

For the Round the Island Route, you can start from wherever is convenient. If you're starting at ferry terminals, the closest ones to the route are Yarmouth and Cowes.

If you're arriving on the Island via Ryde, it's easy enough to pick the trail up from Wootton or Nettlestone, depending on your direction of travel.

The Isle of Wight also hosts an annual cycling festival which is usually held in September.

This easy bike ride goes to Cirencester via Welsh Way & Whiteway, and takes you to return via Preston & Ampney. Bikepacking routes – 10 of the best UK bikepacking routes

Unmissable UK bikepacking routes to take this summer, whether you're an absolute beginner or seasoned bikepacker

Jenny Tough descends a rocky trail on her loaded mountain bike

We all know that the best bikepacking route is the one that you do, rather than think about doing, but here are 10 UK gems to whet your appetite. Some familiar, some hopefully not so much.

They range from one night to one month, and from routes you could take your hybrid-riding other half on, to rocky scream-fests that require the right tools for the job. They assume you’ll be choosing to wild camp, but many of them can be done via campsites, hostels or B&Bs, and even the wildest ones dip near enough to civilization for an emergency night’s drying out if needed.

Either way, these are all about the journey and not the destination, and they’re all largely off-road.

Once you've finished reading this article, you may also like to read our guides to bikepacking on a budget and bikepacking essentials . And if you're looking for mroe inspiration, we've also got a guide to the best bikepacking routes in the USA .

Wye One-nighter, Kent

A recommendation from the ubiquitous Laurence McJannet, author of the book Bikepacking, and no worse for it, you could be pedaling within 40 minutes of leaving London Victoria if you hop off at Ashford International.

Mostly off-road, the route winds its way through woodland, downland and orchards, taking in sections of the North Downs Way and returning in the Stour Valley. Bivvying spots are plentiful, and in summer you could be out after work on Friday, up early on Saturday and home after a breakfast at the Wye Coffee Shop & Kitchen.

 • Length: 32 miles
 • Climbing: 2,944ft
 • Time to complete: 1 night
 • Three words: Accessible, gentle, rural
 • What bike: Gravel or hardtail
 • How remote: In the unlikely event that you need top-ups for a one-nighter, Faversham is around halfway.
 • Getting there: Wye (or nearby Ashford) are on train lines from London. You could also start at Faversham.

Wye One-nighter route.

Gower one-nighter, Wales

If you’ve been meaning to sample Welsh bikepacking, Anthony Pease’s route to the edge of the ocean could be the perfect introduction. It’s a joyful exploration on bridleways, minor roads and singletrack from the edge of Swansea around some of the highest and most beautiful places on the Gower Peninsula, including views across the legendary Rhossili Bay.

And if his stunning photos don’t whet your appetite for tucked away bivvy spots, ocean views and magnificent sunsets, then nothing will.

It’s an area that’s criss-crossed with appetizing tracks, so you could easily tweak this route.

 • Length: 50 miles
 • Climbing: 3,432ft
 • Three words: Stunning, varied, accessible
 • What bike: Gravel or hardtail
 • How remote: Wild ocean views and plenty of bivvy spots for sunrise, but shops and pubs if you need them
 • Getting there: The route starts a couple of miles from Swansea station

Gower one-nighter route.

Trans Norfolk

Norfolk F2C (Forest to Sea)

Chris Coles puts his background as a conservation biologist to full effect in this gentle, nature-filled tour of Norfolk.

The route starts in Thetford and meanders to the north Norfolk coast, back inland to the fens, and round to the east coast again, to finish in Great Yarmouth. It follows disused railway lines, tarmac cycleways and sleepy bridleways, and you’ll want to take your time to soak up the rare flora and fauna, and the art and architecture, whichever season you go in. It’ll never be technically challenging apart from the odd bit of mud after rain.

Perfect proof that you don’t need to hike-a-bike on rocky tracks of death in order to enjoy a proper multi-day bikepacking adventure.

Chris’s website has a detailed paid-for guide to the route and some thoughtfully prepared alternative variations, and you can download the gpx file for free.

 • Length: 137 miles
 • Climbing: 4,064ft
 • Time to complete: 2 nights (there’s also a 68 mile, 1,438ft alternative)
 • Three words: Mellow, nature-filled, big skies
 • What bike: Gravel
 • How remote: Super-peaceful but plenty of dips into civilization if you want them
 • Getting there: Thetford and Great Yarmouth both have train stations. It’s a two hour train ride from the end back to the start

Norfolk F2C route.

Trans-Cambrian Way, Wales

It’s hard to imagine a more attractive bikepacking proposition than this. Rocky singletrack, sweeping grassland, miles of gravel by stunning reservoirs and dams. All taking you from one side of Wales to the other via the oldest mountain range in Europe. It’ll be properly challenging, especially if it’s wet, but it’s very doable if you’re fit. And if you don’t want to bivvy in wild isolation, you have the options of welcoming pubs and B&Bs along the way – or the Claerddu and Nant Rhys bothies.

 • Length: 109 miles
 • Climbing: 10,400ft
 • Time to complete: 2 nights
 • Three words: Remote, challenging, achievable
 • What bike: MTB (or gravel with more pushing)
 • How remote: Super-remote on the trails, but with the options of B&Bs and campsites - or bothies - if you want
 • Getting there: Train station at the start (Knighton), and it’s a £90 taxi ride for up to three people with bikes from the end back to the start

Trans-Cambrian Way route.

Lakeland 200, Cumbria

Don’t be fooled by the short distance – this is one of the toughest mountain bike challenges in England, and the most beautiful. While the non-stop record sits at 16 hours, most riders would allow 4-5 days, either bivvying or hosteling along the way.

It’ll be an emotional roller-coaster, as well as a geological one. It’s got everything - quiet lanes, squelchy moor, tricky nav, and lots of rocks. Blogger Callum James described it as “about 40 percent decent riding, 40 percent hike-a-bike up mountains & across bogs and 20 percent holding on for dear life on some of the steepest & techiest descents.”

Despite describing one part as ‘godawful’ and another three-mile stretch as ‘a bog infested mount of sh*te’, he’d still do it all again: “The views were worth every bit of suffering.”

If you’re slightly masochistic, you’re fit, and you’re comfortable enough on the technical stuff, this should be on your bucket list.

 • Length: 124 miles
 • Climbing: 21,000ft
 • Time to complete: 3-4 nights
 • Three words: Gruelling, technical, stunning
 • What bike: MTB
 • How remote: High altitudes and challenging navigation, especially in bad weather, but pubs and hostels along the way
 • Getting there: A train to the official start at Stavely (via main-line Oxenholme) makes sense, but you can start at almost any point of the circular route.

Lakeland 200 route.

South Downs 300 (‘Southern Discomfort’), Sussex

You’ll find the normal 100-mile South Downs Way on loads of top-10 lists, because it’s a gem, but Jim Barrow’s 300km is an enticing alternative. You’ll get the beauty of the chalky downs, while exploring tracks less ridden. You’ll enjoy wide-open doubletrack, endless rolling grassy hills, and hidden singletrack on woodland trails.

The eastern half spends a fair bit of time on the South Downs Way itself, though with entertaining diversions. The western part is a particular treat if you already know the SDW well, as it meanders through miles of unfamiliar forestry trails here. Jim’s route is a wee bit looser and rootier than the straight SDW, so bear that in mind when you choose tyres.

If you want to stay in towns, Newhaven, Lewes, Storrington and Arundel are all on the route, but spots under the stars are plentiful.

Anyone who thinks the south is flat is in for a surprise - a low gear will be your friend on this route.

 • Length: 187 miles
 • Climbing: 18,400ft
 • Time to complete: 2-5 nights
 • Three words: Fresh, hilly, smile-inducing
 • What bike: MTB, or gravel with big tires
 • How remote: Plenty of wide-open space and bivvy spots, but rarely more than a few miles from civilization, and the route deliberately takes in towns along the way
 • Getting there: The start is a mile from Worthing railway station, but you could join the loop anywhere along the way

South Downs 300 (‘Southern Discomfort’) route.

Pennine Bridleway, Derbyshire to Cumbria

Yorkshire, the Peak District and Cumbria offer some of the finest off-road riding and views in England, so this should be a good ‘un. Billed as the longest continuous off-road cycling route in the UK, it’s rightly popular. Not as technical as some of the routes in this list, it still has its share of stones and calf-busting climbs, as it makes its way along the Pennine Hills across open moors, disused railway lines and past old mill towns. Plenty of accommodation options if you want to go luxe, but be sure to book in advance.

 • Length: 205 miles
 • Climbing: 19,685ft
 • Time to complete: 3-5 nights
 • Three words: Moorland, rocks, views
 • What bike: Hardtail, or gravel bike with more bouncing and pushing
 • How remote: Travels through popular areas in the iconic Pennines, but also wild and exposed, especially further north
 • Getting there: Train stations in Wirkworth and Kirkby Stephen

Pennine Bridleway route.

Badger Divide, Scotland

Proof that you don’t have to be a singletrack ninja or a hike-a-bike lover to enjoy the best of the Highlands, Stu Allan’s Badger Divide route links a number of existing bike ways to create a very satisfying gravelly line between Inverness and Glasgow.

You’ll wiggle up and down the borders of Loch Ness on the Great Glen Way, reach 770m on the rocky Corrieyairack Pass, and cross the wilderness of Rannoch Moor. You can stay wild overnight, or make the most of the bothies, B&Bs and hostels along the way. Despite a few bumpy stretches and singletrack to keep things interesting, it can comfortably be done on a gravel bike. Comfortably apart from the 17,400ft of climbing… you’ll have to earn the reward of this magnificent route.

If you fancy doing it hell for leather, try The Racing Collective’s ScotDURO event on this route in September.

 • Length: 213 miles
 • Climbing: 17,400ft
 • Time to complete: 2-4 nights
 • Three words: Beautiful, non-technical, hilly
 • How remote: It can feel super-bleak if the weather’s bad, but the navigation is mostly very straightforward and there are plenty of options for accommodation
 • Getting there: Inverness and Glasgow are very accessible by train and plane. It’s 3-4 hours between them on the train

Badger Divide route.

Cairngorm Loop

The Cairngorms Loop, Scotland

The Cairngorms National Park contains five of Scotland’s six highest peaks and Britain’s largest arctic mountain landscape. No surprise that this rocky, singletrack-heavy bikepacking route is a magnet for adventurers. Classically it’s ridden as an individual time trial (ITT) against the clock, but it also makes for an unforgettable slower tour.

You’ll need to be fit, comfortable in exposed mountain conditions, and ready for some hike-a-bike and river crossings. When the weather closes in, you’ll need to be well prepared too. Preparation is key and there’s a wealth of online accounts, to help you through.

There are a number of MBA bothies along the way, as well as the option to wild camp thanks to Scotland's Land Reform Act. If tackled over five days, the route can be broken up into two bothy overnights, one wild camp, and one youth hostel. You can also divert into Aviemore instead of wild camping, though taking camping kit is a good idea in case bothies are full.

 • Length: 186 miles
 • Climbing: 11,325ft
 • Three words: Legendary, timeless, exposed
 • What bike: MTB - it’s properly rocky in places
 • How remote: Very. Reaches 800m elevation. Useful bothies and five top-up towns and villages along the way - but if the weather comes down, you’ll need all your mountain navigation skills
 • Getting there: Blair Atholl has a train station, with connections from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness

The Cairngorms Loop route.

“This is the first time I’ve really questioned why I’m doing this to myself. I was freezing, wet, exhausted, lonely, and I knew I needed to get down into the valley before I could look for somewhere to camp. Each house I rode by made me wish more than anything that I could just go home. I could be warm, dry, and not coated in a layer of mud and grit….

I settled down for a windy and cold night, and that’s exactly what I got. As I closed my eyes I told myself to be proud that I wasn’t giving up, and that tomorrow would be better.” This excerpt from Molly Weaver on Epic Cycles blog gives an insight into the challenges faced on such a huge undertaking.

Another ‘event you can do in your own time’, this truly epic route from the Racing Collective is possibly even more of a mental challenge than a physical one. Molly's evocative account of it swings between one ‘best ever cycling experience’ surpassing another in some of the most stunning landscapes of Britain, then grim hours of despair, and straightforward dull drudgery.

You’ll wind from Cornwall through Wales, Manchester, the Lake District, and up (up and up) to John O’Groats, on pretty much every conceivable surface including bogs and river crossing.

You know you want to do it.

 • Length: 1218 miles
 • Climbing: 90,000ft
 • Time to complete: 15-30 nights
 • Three words: Insane, existential, emotional
 • What bike: Gravel with 40mm+ tires, or fast hardtail 29er
 • How remote: Everything. Boggy moors to the middle of cities
 • Getting there: Amazingly, trains are possible - to Penzance, and back down from Wick

GB Divide route.

Sean has old school cycle touring in his blood, with a coast to coast USA ride and a number of month-long European tours in his very relaxed palmares. Also an enthusiastic midpack club cyclocross and XC racer, he loves his role as a junior cycle coach on the Kent/Sussex borders, and likes to squeeze in a one-day unsupported 100-miler on the South Downs Way at least once a year. Triathlon and adventure racing fit into his meandering cycling past, as does clattering around the Peak District on a rigid Stumpjumper back in the day.

Heel of Italy – 2024/25

Good ride, wonderful route with good roads and sufficient challenges to make it interesting – with the mileages just about right leaving time for relaxed evenings and a drink or two. I would say that this ride and Bord/Barc are the two best rides that I have ever done.
I had an absolute awesome time (I think awesome stands for Amazing, Wonderful, Energetic, Spectacular, Outstanding, Magnificent, Everlasting memories).
I have been going on Bike Adventures holidays for many years and they get better and better. The routes are terrific, very well researched and full of interest, and the team that runs the company are highly competent and very customer-orientated.
Yippee we have finished. A brilliant ride made possible by the way you organised our accommodation and route plan. Thank you so much. Enjoying a well deserved pint.
I have been holidaying with Bike Adventures since 2005. Through out the standards have remained high. The Danube trip was every bit as good as I have come to expect. Route and leaders were excellent and the accommodation was of a constantly high standard.
Just to say again what a great trip the Tuscany tour was… Steve and Rob set just the right tone with the group and I hope they enjoyed our company…….I hope to come on another of your trips before too long.
A great trip: a seamless two weeks of sun, sweat and scintillating company! Thanks everyone, and especially to Rob and Bike Adventures!
Just to let you know we had a great holiday and were really impressed with the hard work and support which Phil, John and Kim put in on our behalf. So much so that I wouldn’t really consider a cycling holiday without Bike Adventures!
First, a big thank you for a great experience. The organisation was tremendous and everything appeared to work perfectly. I shall remember the past fortnight with great pleasure for a long time.
…when I think of the last nine days it must rank and one of the best experiences of my life. Thanks to you and to Rob for everything…. I thought the route was perfect…

Top ten best UK motorcycle tours

Motorcycle tours don't have to be pan-European epics that take months to plan and ride, some awesome motorcycle tours can be found right here at home in

Simon Hancocks's picture

LESS is more as the saying goes, and the same thing could be said for motorcycle touring, which doesn't always have to be a week-long slog over thousands of miles.

Looking at shorter, more bite-size motorcycle tours can also open up the option of riding on some smaller, more obscure machines, like road-going dual sport bikes, 125s and even scooters!

With that in mind, here's a rundown of the best UK motorcycle tours for you to plan and ride this summer.

NC500

North Coast 500 (NC500) – northern Scotland Let’s start off with the biggie – the 500-mile route encompassing all the best bits of the coastline of northern Scotland of Scotland and, by general consensus not only including some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain but also some of its best biking roads, making it a ‘must do’ for any biker. The distances and terrain involved means it can be a week-long loop, usually starting and ending in Inverness. Most do clockwise but many recommend the reverse. There’s a dedicated website ( www.northcoast500.com ) including detailed routes, tips, cafes etc you just need to pick a week and do it – you won’t regret it.

The A2 Coast road Northern Ireland

Black Mountain Road – South Wales Also referred to as the Top Gear road for being a favourite route used in the TV show, the BMR specifically is the A4069 which twists, dips and climbs in the western part of the Brecon Beacons National Park, in Wales. Although this specific section is only around 15 miles long, don’t be put off. Use it as an excuse to visit the fabulous Brecon Beacons and from there go exploring. Alternatively, it’s just up the road from Simon Pavey’s adventure riding centre, so if you’re planning a visit there, make sure you do the BMR at the same time.

B660_passing_milestone

‘Bedfordshire dream’ – the B660

Blink and you’d easily miss it, simply because the B660, which has been elevated to almost celebrity status due to its popularity with motorcycling magazines in nearby Peterborough, is very easily bypassed or missed by nearby A-roads. If you’re in the area, though, it’s more than worth a diversion. We most commonly do it south-to-north, picking up the B660 north out of Bedford, before blasting off towards Keysoe. Around 12 miles of challenging sweeper later you’re in the pretty historic town of Kimbolton which is perfect for a breather. Resume and head to Catworth, Old Weston and Winwick before Glatton and the A1. Then go do it all again.

Hardknott-Pass

Hardknott Pass – Lake District More adventure and exploration than sports riding/scratching, this narrow, single-track Roman road holds the joint record for being the steepest in England, the other being Rosedale Chimney Bank in North Yorkshire – so it’s definitely worth ticking off, especially if you have an adventure bike. Not recommended for novices or solo riders, the Hardknott may only be around two miles long but it’s challenging and sinuous with the reward at the top of the 1,291-foot ascent (on a fine day – so choose your days carefully) being simply spectacular views across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man.

https://www.visitcumbria.com/wc/hardknott-pass/

glenetive

From Skyfall with love – Glen Etive

If you can’t spare a full week for Scottish scenic riding on the NC500, why not try Glen Etive instead, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands between Glasgow and Inverness and just 12 miles – but still packed with Scottish scenery. It was also the road famously used as a location in the James Bond film Skyfall, so you’re in good company. To find it, follow the A82 between Glencoe and Bridgy of Orchy and takes the signposted turn-off near the Kingshouse Hotel, on your left if coming from the south. There are no facilities and it’s a dead end so you have to double back but it’s definitely one of the most striking roads in Scotland.

A39

North Devon coast road

A537_cat_fiddle

The Cat & Fiddle – The Peak District

An oldie but still a goodie – and definitely one that must be crossed off on any best British rides Bucket List. Also known as the A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton in the heart of England it’s so named for the Inn which sits at its peak, so being the second highest public house in the country, which is on the border between Cheshire and Derbyshire. The 11.5-mile stretch is now heavily policed and has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous roads in Britain due to its twists and turns, while a blanket 50mph speed limit has also now limited its appeal, but it remains a mecca for motorcyclists and is a ‘must do’ on any UK biking bucket list.

snakepass

Snake Pass loop – Yorkshire/Peak District

This 65-mile loop is also in the heart of England so is reasonably accessible to all and starts in Barnsley before heading west then northwest towards Holmfirth, Holme, Glossop, then the famous Snake Pass before the Rivelin Valley and back to Barnsley. There’s a bit of town work but it’s mostly rural and the view and roads are amazing. You can also have a breather at the famous Snake Pass and, being the best part of an afternoon’s ride means most of us can fit it in in a long day out.

Stonehenge from road

Wootton Bassett/Stonehenge loop – South

This 65-mile route is one of the best rides in southern England and has the added bonus of taking in both historic Wootton Bassett and spectacular Stonehenge, both of which are worth stop-offs. You can start the route anywhere on the loop but from Wootton, you head to Avebury then the excellent open road to Devizes. From there, you pass over the fast expanse of Salisbury Plain passing Stonehenge before turning north through spectacular Savernake Forest and into the historic town of Marlborough then finally complete the loop over twisty Hackpen Hill. You won’t regret it!
