We cruised San Diego Bay for two hours with Cruise San Diego. We chartered the boat for the final night of our family reunion. Great communication from them throughout the process. I know they also do whale watching cruises as well as other cruises. I recommend them for the organization, the incredibly convivial crew, and the wonderful experience.

It was a very pleasant cruise! We haven't spent much time in Mission Bay, so it was nice to see and learn about the area. Great drinks from the bar, great music, and the Captain and crew were absolutely fantastic. We even got to watch the Sea World fireworks, which was an added bonus. Would definitely do this cruise again or try one of their other cruises.

The staff was wonderful...so friendly. Get there early because a line develops and the seating is open seating, first come, first sit. We had a lovely time. We saw some seals and pelicans and the boat captain shared some knowledge about the wildlife. There's a bar and great music...a little something for everyone. We had fun and would do it again!

We took this cruise during our trip to San Diego for our one year anniversary, and it was perfect! The staff was amazing, knowledgeable and calming. They have a bar on board and provided blankets after it gets cool. The timing of everything on the cruise was perfect and saw a beautiful of the sunset in the bay. Great for anyone who wants a nice, relaxing time.

GREAT CRUISES

My husband and I went on a Friday night sunset cruise and we really enjoyed it! The crew was so fun and answered questions about wildlife and helped make us feel extremely comfortable offering blankets and anything else we might need. The crew was awesome. I can’t say enough wonderful things about our trip! We had a wonderful time.

Harbor Cruise in San Diego Bay

Todd Sarouhan

Explore San Diego in Style With a Harbor Cruise

Coronado Bridge at Sunset on Harbor Cruise

As a longtime resident of San Diego, I can say that when you’re visiting the city and the surrounding neighborhoods, there are many options for how you can explore.

I’ve enjoyed making my way through Balboa Park to its museums and the San Diego Zoo , and La Jolla for shopping and cafes, all by foot. The electric shuttle services in Downtown San Diego and Pacific Beach, the FRED and the Beach Bug respectively, have been winners for me as well.

You can also rent a car for maximum flexibility, but public transport or an Uber or Lyft are also possibilities that allow for movement from the San Diego International Airport (SAN) , in Downtown San Diego, and even for fun day trips beyond San Diego proper!

And then there are tours in so many of the city’s neighborhoods that provide stories, history and fun! One of my favorites is the Tequila, Tacos & Tombstones Walking Tour in Old Town San Diego but bus tours like the Old Town San Diego: Hop-on Hop-off Narrated Tour can help you hit highlights as well.

While all those ways are worth considering, there may not be a more unique and special way to see San Diego than from the water! Known for its year-round warm weather and beautiful scenery, taking a harbor cruise is an experience I’d highly recommend!

A harbor cruise out of the San Diego Bay is a fantastic family-friendly way to get out on the water, learn about the history and culture of the city, and of course, take in views of the skyline.

Perhaps you're sold on taking a harbor cruise on the San Diego Bay and are just looking for the best one. Perfect!

Top choices are the 90-Minute Best of the Bay Harbor Tour by City Cruises and the Best of San Diego Bay Harbor Sightseeing Cruise . Both of these cruises will cover the highlights and include San Diego skyline views.

If a sailboat sounds more your speed, I’d recommend the San Diego: Classic Yacht Sailing Experience as it’s just that, ‘An Experience’!

If you’re thinking a meal and some drinks during your cruise sounds nice, I’d recommend the San Diego Bay Gourmet Dinner Cruise or the San Diego: Buffet Breakfast and Brunch Boat Cruise, both offering delicious food and drinks.

We cover the details of more harbor cruises below including a family-friendly cruise in an amphibious vehicle , a Christmas harbor cruise , and a cruise for New Year’s Eve !

Seaport Village in San Diego

Harbor Cruise Options

There are many types of harbor cruises to choose from in San Diego. From dinner cruises to sightseeing and whale watching tours, there really is something for everyone!

Most cruises in San Diego start from Seaport Village in the Embarcadero neighborhood and will take you through the San Diego Bay around historically beautiful Coronado Island and picture perfect Point Loma .

Some cruises may also take you up to Mission Bay or even to La Jolla!

Harbor Cruise in San Diego Bay from Above

What to Expect on Your Cruise

During your boat cruise, you’ll learn about the vibrant nature, history, and culture of San Diego. Harbor cruises are one of the best ways to learn more about San Diego in just an hour or two.

You’ll get to take in the best view of the San Diego skyline, the surrounding beaches , marine life, and so much more.

Coronado Bay Bridge Connecting Coronado and Downtown San Diego

Downtown San Diego Skyline

One of the most exciting things you’ll see on your harbor tour is the Downtown San Diego skyline!

Viewing from a boat is one of the best vantage points to see the entire skyline and the mountains behind it. Whether morning, noon or night, the modern high rises and planes taking off and landing against the beaches and colors of the sky are something I’m sure you’ll really enjoy seeing.

Star of India from the San Diego Bay

Maritime Museum of San Diego

San Diego has a long history as a port and a naval base.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is in the harbor in the Harborview district of Downtown San Diego. It’s home to an extensive collection of restored historical ships and submarines.

One of the most notable ships at the Maritime Museum is the Star of India, which you will see as your boat passes through the harbor. Originally built in 1863, she traveled all around the globe before retiring to San Diego.

The USS Midway from the San Diego Bay

Another historic ship you’ll pass in the harbor is the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.

This was a historic naval ship that served for almost 50 years as an aircraft carrier. It is now a naval museum and events center.

You can visit the USS Midway Museum before or after your harbor cruise at a discounted price when you get a Go City San Diego pass before you arrive using the savings code GVSD5OFF .

Glorietta Bay Park, the Coronado Bridge and Downtown San Diego in the Distance

Coronado Island

Picturesque Coronado Island , is located directly across the bay from Downtown San Diego.

Depending on the route of your cruise, you may also see the Hotel del Coronado , which is one of San Diego’s most iconic landmarks.

You’ll also see the North Island Naval Air Station.

Boardwalk Around Harbor Island in Point Loma

Harbor Island and Shelter Island

These man-made peninsulas jut out from the Point Loma side of the San Diego Bay. Both are home to marinas and yacht clubs, and on special days, you may even catch a sailboat race in the harbor.

These ‘islands’ have been an important part of San Diego’s maritime culture for decades.

Statue Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo at Cabrillo National Monument

  • Cabrillo National Monument

Many harbor cruises will take you all the way out to Point Loma . At the end of the peninsula is the Cabrillo National Monument , which you can see from the water.

This monument commemorates Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s first landing in the San Diego Bay in 1542.

San Diego was one of the first parts of California to be settled, and this monument represents the rich history of the area. San Diego was under Spanish and later Mexican rule before becoming part of the United States.

Sea Lion Next to Sea Bird in San Diego Bay

Marine Wildlife

A harbor cruise can be a great way to see our unique marine wildlife up close!

San Diego is known for its group of charming sea lions. During your tour, your guide may also discuss the importance of marine conservation efforts.

San Diego is also an excellent place to go whale watching, but you won’t see any whales on your harbor cruise. This is because the whales live outside of the harbor in the open ocean. To see the whales, you’ll need to take a specific whale watching cruise .

The Best Time of Year to Take A San Diego Harbor Cruise

San Diego Harbor Cruise Going Under Coronado Bridge

With year-round warm weather, when is the best time to take a harbor cruise?

Summer & Fall

San Diego weather is at its best in late summer and early fall. You can expect sunny days and consistently warm temperatures, which makes this a great time to take a harbor cruise.

Summer gets you close to some of San Diego’s most popular marine life that plays in the bay, including dolphins and sea lions.

Fall visitors get to enjoy fewer crowds and colorful autumnal scenery during their tour.

Winter & Spring

While summer and fall are the best times for a harbor cruise, a cruise can surely be enjoyable at any time of year.

However, if you opt for a winter cruise, there’s a larger chance of a rainy day.

Overcast days are typical for spring in San Diego. Locals refer to this time as the “May Grey” and “June Gloom.”

Year Round Fun

When selecting the date for your harbor cruise, keep in mind that temperatures are always slightly colder on the water than they are on land. Because of this, you’ll need to dress warmer for a harbor cruise than you would for a day in the city.

Local Tips

The Best Time of Day to Book Your Tour

You’ll get splendid views of the San Diego skyline no matter what time of day you go on your cruise.

However, for the most incredible views, consider taking a sunset dining cruise. The incredible colors of the sunset reflect off the skyline of Downtown San Diego for once-in-a-lifetime memories.

The Best Harbor Cruises in San Diego

With a simple search, you’ll quickly find that there are many harbor cruise operators in San Diego. Think sightseeing tours, dinner cruises, wildlife tours, jet boats, and beyond.

Plus, many of San Diego’s harbor cruises offer food and drinks onboard which can range from simple snacks to a full dinner with cocktails. You can expect plenty of seafood and other fresh local ingredients.

Let’s have a look at eight of my favorite harbor cruises I like to recommend to friends and family. And if you stick around until the end of my list, I’ll give you a couple harbor cruise local tips to consider as well!

San Diego Harbor Cruise with Skyline in Background

90-Minute Best of the Bay Harbor Tour by City Cruises

The Admiral Hornblower is waiting to take you and your party on the San Diego Bay!

This family-friendly boat ride is fully-narrated and covers more than 20-miles of landmarks and important San Diego locations. The boat includes an air conditioned interior and also has an onboard with refreshments for sale.

Highlights Include:

  • Downtown San Diego skyline views

Why We Love It

This tour covers all the highlights from Seaport Village to Point Loma and everything in between. The narrator will make sure you know what you’re viewing plus point out any wildlife that is spotted during the journey.

The tour is also part of the Go City San Diego pass which means with the discount code GVSD5OFF you can get an additional savings.

You can also combine the harbor cruise with other popular San Diego attractions to ensure the absolute lowest admission prices. Highlights include the USS Midway Museum in the Embarcadero , SeaWorld San Diego in Mission Bay Park , the world-famous San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park , more museums than I can count and so much more.

Sunset on a Harbor Cruise in San Diego

San Diego Bay Sunset & Daytime Sailing Experience

The San Diego Bay Sunset & Daytime Sailing Experience promises the best views of San Diego on a sailing yacht cruise.

You’ll get to sit back and relax as your 2-hour cruise sails around Harbor Island, alongside the San Diego skyline and through the San Diego Bay.

The cruise offers daytime or sunset sailing options. Both deliver picturesque views and plenty of chances for great photo ops.

If I personally had to choose, I would recommend the sunset cruise which is perfect for a romantic date night or celebrating a special milestone.

These harbor cruises offer white wine, soft drinks, and water, but they also let you bring your own food and drinks on board for the voyage!

What I really think sets this harbor cruise apart is the ability to book a private sailing experience for you and six of your friends. Just reserve the six seats directly from the website and your private harbor cruise experience will be set!

Sunset on San Diego Bay

San Diego Bay Gourmet Dinner Cruise

The 2.5-hour, elegant San Diego Bay Gourmet Dinner Cruise offers made in-house seasonal dishes and cocktails. There’s also a DJ onboard providing live entertainment.

First spend a little time on deck watching the sunset before being seated for your meal. Then just sit back and enjoy your meal as you take in San Diego’s beautiful skyline.

We definitely recommend taking this cruise on a full moon if possible as nothing beats seeing the full moon while out on the ocean.

  • Coronado Bridge

The meals are prepared on board and include fresh, seasonal items.

The best part? Vegetarian, gluten-free, upgrades, and kid options are available!

You’ll also have your own private table for your group. Kids under 3 eat free, just choose the free child option during checkout.

Tip of Coronado Island with the Coronado Bridge in the Background

Best of San Diego Bay Harbor Sightseeing Cruise

You’ll get to enjoy a narrated harbor tour as you take in some of the best views in San Diego with the 1.5-hour North Harbor or South Harbor San Diego: Best of the Bay Harbor Sightseeing Cruise .

The North Harbor cruise brings you close to San Diego’s military and naval history. You’ll see the Maritime Museum , North Island Naval Air Station, and more!

The South Harbor cruise takes you close to the sea lions, iconic Coronado Bridge , and the U.S.S. Midway.

  • Seaport Village
  • Shelter Island

I like that this harbor cruise has two versions. To me that allows for more time at the sights and less time getting from place to place.

You’ll get to see some of San Diego’s most famous spots while learning about San Diego’s rich history all from an informative crew member.

Plus, you’ll learn about local environmental efforts through video clips and displays.

View of Downtown San Diego from San Diego Bay

San Diego Bay Harbor Cruise

The 1 to 2 hour simply named San Diego Bay Harbor Cruise is perfect for visitors who are interested in a harbor cruise but are short on time. In under 2 hours you’ll get to see our iconic waterfront landmarks and marine life while learning about the city.

The onboard narration also does a great job of combining San Diego’s scenic beauty, history, and points of interest in a small batch of time.

Parking is available at the USS Midway Museum for a $10 fee.

  • Downtown San Diego

This harbor cruise is perfect if you want to get out on the water, but just for a short cruise.

I also really like their ship! It has three levels and both indoor and outdoor seating. With 360-degree views, there’s practically no bad seat in the house.

San Diego SEAL Tour on Land

San Diego Bay SEAL City Tour by Amphibious Bus

Adventure lovers, this is the tour for you and your group! This hybrid bus and boat tour is the best of both worlds – land and sea!

First, learn about San Diego as your ‘bus’ goes through the city. Then buckle in as your bus splashes into the bay for the water portion of your tour. This is definitely the perfect tour for families looking for something a little different.

Also, if you’re hoping to get a closer look at San Diego’s famous seals, this 1.5-hour San Diego Bay SEAL City Tour by Amphibious Bus is an incredible choice.

  • The Embarcadero
  • The Old Police Headquarters

This tour is all about the amphibious vehicle!

It’s not every day that you get to jump aboard a bus and boat in one. It’s also very fun for families, has very personable guides, and includes a seal sighting.

We can’t recommend this tour enough.

Sunset Sail in San Diego Bay

San Diego: Classic Yacht Sailing Experience

The San Diego: Classic Yacht Sailing Experience lets you enjoy the San Diego skyline while aboard a classic sailboat.

This 2.5-hour tour focuses on many of the landmarks we mentioned before, but what sets this tour apart is the sailboat.

The Liberty is a classic, and in our humble opinion, beautiful! The 1904-styled Friendship sloop is breathtaking. You’ll certainly feel you’ve stepped back in time with this tour.

The tour is very family friendly, but we also think this is perfect for couples.

  • Wildlife Encounters

Not only will you sail the harbor in the Liberty, but you’ll learn about, and try your hand if you’d like, at traditional sailing techniques on this hand-restored sailboat.

Plus, this is a small group tour. So all you need is 6 in your group for a private experience!

San Diego Champagne Brunch Cruise

San Diego: Buffet Breakfast and Brunch Boat Cruise

The San Diego: Buffet Breakfast and Brunch Boat Cruise is an easy sell!

This 2-hour cruise delivers big on yummy breakfast and lunch dishes, and once you’re done, you can head out on deck to enjoy the views of the city.

Grab your group and join the Sunday Champagne Brunch crowd for fresh, seasonal dishes and free-flowing champagne.

The title makes this one easy – a delicious buffet breakfast and brunch! Add in a sail on the harbor and this tour speaks for itself.

Winter Time Skyline Over the San Diego Bay

Bonus #1: San Diego Bay Christmas Day Buffet Brunch or Dinner Cruise

I promised a couple local harbor cruise tips and taking a Christmas Day cruise is one of them!

Mix together a little holiday spirit, a harbor cruise, and beautiful San Diego and you have a magical Christmas tour indeed!

The San Diego Bay Christmas Day Buffet Brunch or Dinner Cruise 2.5-hour cruise is equal parts elegance, holiday themed festivities, and merriment. You’ll enjoy a brunch or dinner buffet meal that’s made by a chef on board, plus select drinks are unlimited.

Don’t forget to take your picture with Santa before you board!

Holiday decor, music, and fun - it may be a non-traditional way to celebrate the holidays, but we can easily say it’ll create special memories that will last a lifetime.

Just relax, let the crew take care of everything, and enjoy the holiday. Plus, you’ll have a guaranteed table just for your party.

Bonus #2: San Diego Bay New Year’s Eve Gourmet Brunch or Dinner Cruise

My second local harbor cruise tip is to consider a New Year’s Eve cruise!

Say goodbye to the year on a San Diego Bay New Year’s Eve Gourmet Brunch or Dinner Cruise .

From the live music entertainment to the freshly prepared entrees and flowing cocktails, this tour will be an unforgettable holiday cruise.

Choose from the brunch or dinner cruise and then sip champagne as you cruise through the San Diego Bay.

I think if you’re looking for a unique way to bring in the New Year, this could be it.

It’s worth noting that this cruise sells out in advance so make sure to reserve your space well ahead of the holiday!

The entrees and desserts are prepared freshly on board. Plus, they offer vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options to best accommodate dietary restrictions.

So whether you’re looking forward to dancing the night away, watching the view, or enjoying the meal, this New Year’s Eve cruise is perfect for families, friend groups, and couples.

Make the Most of Your San Diego Harbor Cruise with These Tips

San Diego Harbor Cruise on the Spirit of San Diego

A harbor cruise is one of the most exciting ways to enjoy San Diego.

To make the most of your trip, you’ll want to be prepared - here are some tips to help you have the best day possible out on the water.

  • Dress for Your Cruise - It’s important to remember that it’s always cooler out on the water than it is on land. Some of these cruises have a dress code, so be sure to check with your operator before selecting your outfit for the evening.
  • Getting to the Dock & Parking - Most cruises start from Seaport Village in the Embarcadero of Downtown San Diego. Parking in this area is expensive and can often be difficult to find, so consider taking an alternate mode of transportation.
  • Bring Your Camera - Harbor cruises have some of the best views in all of San Diego, so be sure to bring your camera to snap some pictures!
  • Safety First - If you’re going to be on an outdoor deck, you’ll also want to make sure you’re protected from the sun. Wear sunscreen and bring sunglasses.
