The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks

Kit Dillon

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

When you open up your favorite carry-on travel backpack, it should feel like you’re opening the door to a well-organized closet or sitting down at a clean desk, with everything in the right place and easy to reach.

This is your moment to center yourself, no matter how chaotic the journey.

What we considered

A 45-liter bag maximizes overhead space but can get heavy when fully packed; 35-liter bags tend to be more manageable.

A bag with a clamshell design opens like a book and is the easiest to pack, but a bag that opens traditionally tends to have more structure.

Ideally, a travel backpack has handles on all sides—especially the bottom—so you can pull it out of overhead bins or from under seats.

Some internal pockets are useful, but major organizing is better managed with packing cubes.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack and the larger Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L offer the best combination of features, quality, and durability. Both bags are exemplary carry-on travel backpacks that are designed for comfort, durability, and organization. Though these backpacks are great as companion bags for any trip, they’re designed to ultimately replace all of your other luggage and become your exclusive bag as you travel.

This style of packing is not for everyone, but once some people try it, they’re forever hooked. Finding the right bag is a personal choice, though, and no single bag will appeal to everyone. That’s why we also have picks that are great for people who travel for work , others that are designed to be carried over long distances , and a bag that’s basically luggage on your back .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, best small carry-on bag for most situations: cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack, best large bag for most situations: peak design travel backpack 45l, best mobile office: patagonia black hole mlc 45l, best bag for long journeys on foot: osprey farpoint 40 and fairview 40, best bag if you need a large suitcase on your back: tortuga travel backpack pro 40l, other good carry-on travel backpacks, how we picked and tested, the competition.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade, and I have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack, whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that, and I spent another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

I reached out to writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag: Eytan Levy, the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website; James Feess, founder of The Savvy Backpacker ; and Sharon Gourlay, of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

We researched and tested bags designed for those who want to travel light and stay flexible while flying, without the burden of checking luggage. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey.

  • When you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage, it’s easy to remain more mobile. And it’s easier to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but also about yourself and what you really need day to day.
  • Size and weight still matter. If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags tend not to be carry-on-friendly, however, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them.
  • No single backpack is perfect for everyone. Before you make any purchase, consider some basic points. How much can you carry? And where do you usually visit: the city or outback? Travel gear should feel like a welcome companion—there to support you when you need it but unobtrusive when you don’t.

45-liter bag vs. 35-liter bag

A graphic comparing the difference in capacity between a 45-liter and a 35-liter backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

A versatile small pack for a week or a weekend.

This durable bag’s clamshell design makes it easy to organize your stuff. And due to its strap design, this bag can be worn on your back or carried in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag for getaways lasting just a few days or a whole week.

It’s one bag that can do it all. This is a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

The packed Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack, shown fully open so that the contents are accessible.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
  • We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but after many years of traveling with our bag, we’ve found that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight: 3 pounds 5 ounces Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: adventurous Colors: assorted

A person stands by a wooden fence outdoors while wearing the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L, our larger pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

  • It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
  • More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: back-panel loader Style: minimalist and unobtrusive Color: black, sage

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack, is held in midair by a person wearing a plaid shirt.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

May be out of stock

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

  • We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

The Osprey Farpoint/ Fairview 40 Travel Pack, one of our also-great picks for the best carry-on travel backpack, shown in black.

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

bag for travel walking

Osprey Fairview 40

For long distances and smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

View of the straps on the reverse of the Osprey travel backpack.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

  • For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight (Farpoint): 3 pounds 3 ounces Weight (Fairview): 3 pounds 2 ounces Main compartment access: front-panel loader Style: active Colors (Farpoint): green (Gopher), gray (Tunnel Vision), blue (Muted Space), black Colors (Fairview): blue (Winter Night), red (Zircon), blue (Night Jungle), black

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

The Tortuga Backpack Pro shown with the front clamshell lid in the open position.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

  • Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
  • It's heavy. We’ve fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be (the difference is noticeable), and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. We are currently testing a new, lighter, and less-expensive version of this pack—aptly named the Travel Backpack Lite 40L —and will report back soon.  In the meantime, if you think you would struggle carrying the Tortuga, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

Capacity: 40 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: minimal, with a rigid construction Color: black

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

  • Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

A graphic illustrating a clamshell bag opening

  • Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
  • Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
  • Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
  • Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
  • Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
  • Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

Are sling bags making a comeback for travel? I’ve seen a lot about sling bags being the popular new type of daypack to have while you’re out on a trip. After all, they’re compact, convenient and versatile.

Here’s how I define a sling bag: it has to have one strap—like a backpack, but just with one strap; it also has to fit daytime essentials, and be comfortable for all-day wear during vacation, business travel or any other type of trip.

In this list, check out the top-notch sling bags I’ve tried and researched, and see what I think they’re best for.

My note: One thing this article is NOT about is fanny packs or belt bags. This article is specifically about bags that either have a single strap as strong as a backpack strap, or are large enough to be worn for slinging, rather than at your waist._

Troubadour Apex Sling (5.5L)

Best for: A business trip, looking chic, classy urban adventures

One thing I love about Troubadour’s travel backpacks and bags is that when I wear one, I look good. I’ve reviewed the Troubadour brand , and I can’t stop talking about the quality materials, amazing designs and durable zippers.

The Apex Sling bag smart features that I have to tell you about, from the mini tablet sleeve on the inside, to a weatherproofed zip pocket on the outside and a hidden pocket in the backside for theft-proof safety against my valuables.

This is a travel sling so attractive that I can wear it from the plane, to a business meeting, and then out to the bar. It’s like a business travel backpack turned into a mini 5.5-liter sling bag that’s great for any professional or city trip.

Peak Design Everyday Sling v2 (3L)

Best for: Photographers, and people who like bags with quality that lasts a lifetime

I think the Peak Design Everyday Sling is really unique. It’s ready for everyday adventures (running errands in your car), secure storage of valuables and a camera during travel and it can even transport a bunch of cans of soda.

If you’re a travel photographer or just someone who likes to take photos during a trip with a “real camera,” you’ll be glad to know that Dan listed this sling bag on the roundup of the best backpacks for photographers .

What I like best about it is the smart and stretch pockets inside , the highly durable survive-anything exterior from waterproof nylon and the moving divider inside, so that I can stay organized (or store a camera).

Bellroy Venture Sling (6L)

Best for: Travelers who like style, durability and a good amount of space

I’m a fan of Bellroy products: they’re simple, timeless, excellent quality and focus on the features that travelers need most. For example, the Bellroy Venture Sling in the 6L size has stretchy inside pockets, side pocket organizers, an adjustable strap with classy metal slider buckles AND a zipper function I’ve never seen before on a sling bag for travel.

The zippers end at either end of the sling’s main cavity, and they meet in the middle, meaning you can open them both at one time, or open one at a time from the side you prefer. It’s a unique design.

If you see in my photos what fits inside, I can fit an entire bottle of sunscreen, one of my big KIND breakfast bars, hand sanitizer and my baseball cap. And I have a ton of room to spare, for my sunglasses case, wallet, keys and more.

Looking for a bigger one? You can size up to the 9L version .

Canvelle Sling Bag (4L) (and Oversized Sling (6L) )

Best for: Looking stylish while you travel, female travelers, versatile daytime sling bags

What I continue to write home about in regard to Canvelle bags is that they combine style with weightlessness. All the Canvelle products are made from recycled bottlesand they are so lightweight. A sling bag like the Canvelle Sling is made of so little material that it can even pack into another backpack or suitcase, so that I can take it out when I get to my destination.

bag for travel walking

This is a true sling bag in that I can sling it around my front or my back, and adjust the strap to bring the entire pack closer to my body if I’m in crowded areas of new cities. I like the easy zippers, interior storage management like mesh pockets and zippered compartments and the breathable back panel.

I’ll also be honest in telling you that I like clipping in my Canvelle wallets and flat organization pouches (all Canvelle wallets and flat pouches come with clip-in rings) and using the key clip for my keys. This sling bag does it all and it’s a trendy look for all my trips.

bag for travel walking

In select colors, you can also see if the Oversized Sling Bag is available. That one is 6 liters in volume and it’s 3 inches bigger in the bag height and width.

Cotopaxi Chasqui Sling (13L)

Best for: Fitting a laptop, versatile travel wear (hiking/cities) and funky colors

The Cotopaxi brand makes me feel adventurous, and the Cotopaxi Chasqui Sling (in a 13-liter size) is a messenger-bag-meets-backpack with room for a laptop and a single crossbody shoulder strap.

Some things that I think are unique about it are the “wraparound zipper” that lets me access anything inside, plus a zippered pocket on the mesh back panel for tucking in some papers or a passport. Just like everything from Cotopaxi, this sling is built for adventure and does well both on travel days and in the wild.

Quince Leather Sling Bag

Best for: Women travelers, wearing from day to night

Maybe you’ve seen my Quince product recommendations in travel roundup lists like the best travel fanny packs , or maybe you’re new to the brand. Regardless, I can tell you that from my experience with Quince products, the combination of great styles and competitive prices cannot be beat.

What I like about the Leather Sling Bag is that it is a simple and timeless style with a thick strap. Sure, this one looks more like a belt bag (and maybe it is), but with the company classifying it as a sling, we know it looks good slung over one shoulder. As for cool travel features, it has a back-side zipper pocket for keeping essentials secure and a handy card slot inside. Plus, it looks gorgeous, whether I’m sightseeing or out to dinner on vacation.

Nomatic Navigator Sling (10L)

Best for: Commuting, travel adventures and fitting a wide variety of tech (tablets, cameras)

At first glance, I saw the Nomatic Sling and thought it was the Troubadour Apex Sling—I couldn’t believe the similarity in design.

There are some differences for sure, though, despite the black minimalist look. Coming from one of our favorite photography/travel companies Nomatic (see our Nomatic brand review to learn about our experience), it has a look incredibly similar to our Navigator 15L Pack , just more petite.

With a 10-liter volume, it actually DOES have a laptop compartment, a tablet compartment and an RFID-safe pocket for tech. It’s made with all water-repellent materials and has tamper-resistant zippers, so we can feel safe using it in higher-theft locations. (A few more travel features I have to note: it has a trolley sleeve for suitcase travel, and lastly, a card pocket on the single back strap.)

North Face Borealis Sling Bag (6L)

Best for: Commuting, traveling anywhere, days in transit, climbing or hiking

The North Face Borealis Sling is a bit nostalgic for me because the first North Face backpack I ever owned was the Borealis Backpack ! It’s a favorite of mine and brings back good memories. It’s great that The North Face made the Borealis into a smart single-strap sling bag for travelers.

I like this sling bag because it looks like a natural: the bungee cords on the front make it a true travel bag, able to strap down a windbreaker, sweaty shirt or light travel towel during a hike.

The other super handy feature to note is the elongated zipper pocket on the cushioned strap: it fits a granola bar or a pair of sunglasses. One more thing this sling bag has that others don’t is a water bottle pocket that fits even a wide-mouthed thermos!

Tortuga Travel Sling (2.5L)

Best for: Unbeatable quality, simple design and lots of pockets

Note: It was so popular that it’s now out of stock, and coming back in November 2024. You can place a pre-order to get on the waitlist.

Tortuga’s Travel Sling is a versatile bag for travel days and it’s highly-rated among pro travelers (just like everything from the Tortuga brand ). I own a Tortuga Travel Sling, and I tell people that the notable things about it are its weightlessness (8 ounces when empty!), magnetic clasp buckle (makes it stand out from the rest) and smart mesh interior pockets.

It’s weatherproof, and totally unisex, so either Dan or I can use mine if we’re out for the day on vacation and switching bags while we chase our toddler. One of my favorite uses of it so far has been for some hiking out in a nature reservation close to where we live.

bag for travel walking

Osprey Daylite Sling (6L)

Best for: Hiking, outdoor adventures, camping, everyday use

From the famous Osprey outdoors and luggage brand, the Daylite Sling is a very affordable option for your travel sling. It weighs about half a pound when empty, so that’s a great starting point for a lightweight travel daypack.

One thing it does that the Apex Sling does (and that a lot of travel slings don’t do, as I have found!) is become ambidextrous. For lefties or righties, or people who like to switch sides for carrying a crossbody sling, the Osprey Sling allows for looping the single shoulder strap on either side via a hook at the base. I think that’s a really smart option to have in a travel sling.

Patagonia Atom Sling Bag (8L)

Best for: Hiking and outdoor activities, biking, having lots of straps

We’re big fans of Patagonia, seeing as how enthusiastic Dan is in his Patagonia Black Hole Duffel review! The Atom Sling Bag from Patagonia is a high-quality sling for taking everywhere: commuting, bike rides, hiking, camping and general travel. It has an 8-liter volume that can pack in quite a bit when it comes to a day’s-out essentials, and just like the North Face Sling, it has a zip-down pocket on the front shoulder strap.

At the moment, it comes in a variety of colors that suit men, women and unisex preferences.

Travelon AT Classic Sling Bag

Best for: Theft-proof materials, slash-proof fabrics, locking compartments for safety/security

What stands out about the Travelon AT Classic Sling Bag is probably the affordable price, and the theft-resistant features. Right away, this sling bag looks simple, but right under the surface, I got to learn about the slash-resistant fabric panels (to ward off thieves with knives) and compartments that “lock” to each other with a clasp and loop.

The RFID-blocking passport and card slots are a bonus, too, for travelers who want to really take every precaution for fighting off getting mugged. Just keep this bag close to you in crowded streets to avoid pickpockets on your trip !

Sherpani Esprit Anti-Theft Sling

Best for: Traveling women, RFID protection, anti-slash fabrics and a looping lock system

I’m newer to the Sherpani brand, but having seen it everywhere from Amazon to REI, I know it can be trusted. The wildly-popular Sherpani Esprit Anti-Theft Sling Bag is a functional sling bag for women travelers, and it has theft-proof features, too.

The highlights to call out are clip locks for the main compartment, RFID-blocking pockets and anti-slash fabric at the bottom and shoulder strap.

If you’re into the teardrop-style shape and the various available colors, this one seems like a solid buy for a travel sling bag.

KAVU Rope Sling Bag - Women’s

Best for: Traveling women, travelers who like catchy designs, casual activities, transit days

One of the more unique-looking sling bags here, the woman-specific KAVU Rope Sling Bag really does have rope for its single strap. It’s an earthy and laid-back look that’s great for backpackers, casual travelers and outdoor activities.

To get to your stuff inside, you’ll access it via two vertically-zipping compartments. There’s also a Velcro pocket on the front side for keys or a phone. (Note: this is not one of my theft-proof recommendations, so it’s therefore best for hiking and casual activity, rather than dense cities and urban trips).

Carhartt Mono Sling Bag & Crossbody Backpack

Best for: A unisex travel style, a classic design, hidden pockets, lightweight build

Travelers seem to go nuts for the Carhartt Travel Sling Bag , which has a cool canvas look and is made with Rain Defender, to protect my stuff during wet weather.

There is a tablet sleeve for an iPad or e-reader, a long 19-inch main cavity for storage and a fleece-lined pocket for tech and electronics.

I do like the look of this one, as it’s kind of vintage-themed and rugged. The Carhartt Sling will do well for city sightseeing, travel days, walking around and light hikes.

This fan-favorite belt bag has a loyal following of both men and women (including several GH staffers!) thanks to its comfortable fit, lightweight materials and spacious interior — all for a reasonable price. The nylon fabric is water-resistant, while the strap is fully adjustable so you can get a close fit around your torso (or waist if you prefer to wear it as a fanny pack).

Just note that unlike some crossbody bags that sit at the hip, this one lies flat against your torso, so it's not quite as easy to access the contents. Though its smaller 1L version is more popular, we think this larger size is great for travel because it can hold more while you're on the go.

Dimensions: 8.3" x 2.2" x 5.7" | Colors: Over 15 options

Despite its low cost, this bag wowed our experts and consumer testers with its comfort, style and spaciousness. In fact, it can even hold a water bottle along with a phone, wallet, keys and other essentials — all with room to spare.

One tester told us, "I love how lightweight it is and how much I can fit inside it!" Beyond that, the curved shape helps it feel comfortable at your side, even when you're walking for miles. Though its materials aren't quite as luxe as pricier bags, it still looks sleek and neutral enough to wear with a variety of outfits.

Dimensions: 11" x 6.7" x 3.9" | Colors: 7 options

Though the style looks and feels substantial, it's s urprisingly lightweight thanks to its performance fabrics that also happen to be water-repellent. Each bag features a quilted design and is easily packable so it doesn't take up valuable space in your suitcase.

The bag is on the larger size for a crossbody with one big main compartment, plus a small zippered pocket in the front so you can quickly find your essentials. It's also worth noting that the adjustable strap is longer than some other crossbodies, meaning it can also be carried as a low-hanging shoulder bag.

Dimensions: 12" x 122" x 4" | Colors: 7 options

Leatherology Meadow Large Satchel

Meadow Large Satchel

For those who prefer leather bags over ones with synthetic performance fabrics, this fashion-forward pick is great for a more elevated luxury look, especially when you're dressed to impress on vacation.

While most stylish leather crossbodies have sky-high designer price tags, this one is on the more affordable end. Worn by celebrities like Serena Williams and Kristen Bell, it's not as lightweight as other travel crossbodies, but our testers say it's not too heavy, either. It has two zippered pockets, each with organizational compartments inside. It's also available in smaller sizes at lower costs.

Dimensions: 10.25" x 7.25" x 4" | Colors: 9 options

A clear front screen allows you to use a touch-screen phone without taking it out. Plus, the crossbody strap can adjust to be worn as as a belt bag.

The main pouch is a foam-like material with a water-repellent finish and it lies flat against the body. The strap contains pouches designed to hold sunglasses and AirPods. As an added bonus, the strap is removable and can be attached onto other bags, while the pouch can be used as an organizer inside larger purses.

Lululemon All Night Festival Bag 5L

All Night Festival Bag 5L

Like a modern-day messenger, this style has a wide opening so you can easily sift through everything you packed inside. Once it's zippered shut, the top folds over and secures with a magnet. (Just note that Lululemon warns the magnet can interfere with certain electronic devices and bank cards.)

One GH staffer said she uses it every day and noted that the flap "feels secure while commuting or traveling and allows for a quick retrieval for items inside." Like other Lululemon bags , it has a lightweight and water-resistant performance fabric.

Dimensions: 7.9" x 3.9" x 8.3" | Colors: 3 options

Dange Dover Landon Neoprene Carryall Bag (Extra Small)

Landon Neoprene Carryall Bag (Extra Small)

Available in five sizes, this style's largest options make perfect weekender bags while the smaller ones are more ideal as crossbody purses. This extra-small size still has a five-liter capacity, making it spacious enough to carry on-the-go essentials, even holding a small tablet or notebook.

We especially love this one's organizational features: inside the main zippered compartment are three pockets and a key leash, while the outside has a phone sleeve for easy access (though keep in mind: It's not zippered, so it's less secure). We also love its soft neoprene fabric and wide straps to support a heavier load.

Dimensions: 9" x 4.75" x 6.25" | Colors: 9 options

MZ Wallace Crossbody Belt Bag

Crossbody Belt Bag

When fashion is the first and foremost priority, consider a splurge-worthy style like this quilted belt bag. Despite its large size, it's still fairly lightweight thanks to its nylon material. It's also functional for travel with two zippered compartments and built-in pockets for organization.

We love its versatility thanks to its three detachable straps: Two wide ones for your waist or across the body and one chain strap to dress it up. Online reviewers call it "perfect for international travel," with one saying she found it especially useful on a trip to London and Paris.

Dimensions: 10" x 8.5" x 2" | Colors: 4 options

Bandolier Crossbody Bag

Crossbody Bag

For a simple, chic and timeless style, this small crossbody is described as a "sleek look with a ton of functionality packed in" by one GH analyst who personally uses it. For starters, the adjustable strap can be swapped for other straps from the brand , plus the bag can expand a bit to pack in more when you need it. The flap secures with a magnet (there's no zipper) and it's made with real pebbled leather for an elegant look that can be dressed up.

Dimensions: 8" x 6" x 3" | Colors: 3 options

Madewell The Medium Transport Tote

The Medium Transport Tote

Combining the capacity of a tote with the convenient strap of a crossbody, Madewell's bag is a tester favorite thanks to its supple leather and spacious interior.

A GH analyst that carries this bag while traveling said it's especially useful if you're going to be shopping so you don't have to carry around extra bags as you explore new cities. It's also ideal if you need to carry a bulky load, like an umbrella, water bottle and layers of clothing, but be aware that there's no zippered closure for protection.

Dimensions: 12.25" x 11" x 5.5" | Colors: 2 options

Coach Willow Bucket Bag

Willow Bucket Bag

One GH staffer that recommended this style said, "I own a variety of Coach bags and they continue to stay in great condition," adding that the Coach Outlet is a great option for more affordable versions.

She likes this bag in particular because of how roomy it is, calling it "just the right size." Just note that it has multiple sections, some of which are unzippered, making contents less secure while traveling.

How we chose the best crossbody travel bags

linebreak

The experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab are passionate about finding the best products at the crossroads of fashion and function, constantly testing to find apparel and accessories that perform well, feel (and look) great and last for years to come.

To find the best crossbody bags for travel, we considered our staff's personal favorites from the dozens of styles that we've tested in our Lab and personally tried out in real life. We also asked other Good Housekeeping editors and analysts to weigh in with their recommendations, plus we performed market research using our product expertise to find new and popular styles from brands we know and love.

How to shop for travel-friendly crossbody bags

linebreak

The one thing all crossbody bags have in common is that they're worn across your body. Other than that, here's what to consider when choosing the best crossbody bag for your next getaway:

  • Size: Smaller dimensions typically mean the bag is more totable, but will hold less. Alternatively, larger bags may fit more inside but can be cumbersome to wear, depending on your type of travel. Besides the dimensions, also consider the capacity: 1-2 liters will be smaller, while 5 liters will be more spacious yet still comfortable to wear.
  • Compartments and pockets : Some crossbody bags have one main compartment, while others have several compartments to help you stay organized. Also check for pockets inside the compartments, including pouches to hold your phone, keys and cards for easy access.
  • Closures: Most crossbody bags for travel have zippers to keep everything safe and secure inside. However, some have magnet closures and others have no closures at all. Consider how secure you need your belongings to be and whether you'll be at risk for things falling out or being pickpocketed.
  • Materials: Many styles are made of synthetic performance fabrics (like nylon and polyester) because they're lightweight and water-resistant. If you prefer a more luxurious bag, opt for leather (or even faux leather). Also keep in mind that bags with metal hardware will be heavier to carry around.
  • Adjustability: To ensure your crossbody bag will fit comfortably around your torso, check for an adjustable strap so you can find the right fit. Some crossbody bags are also convertible, meaning you can change the straps or change how you wear them on your body.
  • Packability: If you'll be packing your crossbody bag in your suitcase, consider opting for a lighter and thinner style instead of one that's more structured. If you do prefer a structured bag for style, consider wearing while en route to your destination or filling it with smaller items (like socks and underwear) in the suitcase so you don't waste valuable packing space.
  • Safety features: Certain trips require you to pay closer attention to the risk of people that prey on tourists. In these cases, look for anti-theft features like secure zippers, straps that can attach onto your seat and RFID-blocking technology.
  • Appearance: Last, but certainly not least, it's okay to choose a travel bag based on how it looks without sacrificing other important features. Consider what you'll be doing and wearing throughout your trip. Some of our recommendations are especially good at transitioning from daytime exploring to nighttime dining while matching a wide range of outfits.

City Backpack

best-travel-bags-for-sightseeing

A backpack is ideal for keeping everything I need on me while I’m away from my lodging. An athletic/travel daypack could also work, but I find it screams tourist when I’m in a larger city. I prefer to blend in, and a solid canvas or leather backpack serves this purpose well. A messenger bag could also work, but they start to annoy me on long days. I like the balanced weight of my backpack. One downside is that since you don’t have a visual of your pack it can be more susceptible to pick pocketing. In large crowds it may be a good idea to pull it forward.

Here are other daypacks for travel.

Cross body purses are a traveler’s best friend. On days when I don’t need to tote my computer around and I’m not on a trail, I go for my cross body bag. I bring a slim style to ensure I don’t over pack when I go out. I also bring it along at night when I want to keep it light and my valuables safe. Having my bag close to my body makes me feel like my possessions are secure. Often I’ll hold onto the strap or put my hand over the top when I’m walking through markets or crowded areas.

Here are more ideas for cross body purses – our favorite pick for the best travel bags!

For travel wallets,  wristlets are the best. Cash is usually king when traveling, and I like to have a wallet that can easily hold bills and coins. This style is really nice because you can tuck your phone into it along with your money. It makes it easy to change bags, which I do often. The perfect finishing touch to my carefully planned outfits from my travel capsule wardrobe . All of my important cards, phone, room key and money are in one spot so nothing gets left behind. The wristlet is also great for going out at night. You can keep your important items close, and don’t have to worry about lugging around a bag.

Please read our tips on keeping your valuables safe while traveling .

Heading to the beach requires a different set of gear than a normal travel day. Towels, sunscreen, snacks, cover ups, and drinks can take up quite a bit of space. A nice beach bag can be a stylish accessory to add to your beach look. I also like that it can double as your carry on. I normally stick to simple neutral bags, but I give exception for beach bags. The geometric pattern below would be a fun addition to your travel wardrobe.

Use packing cubes in your bag to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible

With airline bag restrictions, it’s not always feasible to bring an extra bag along. That’s when packable options can come in handy. I particularly like this polka dot backpack . You can easily stow it in your luggage and only pull it out when needed. Less baggage means less hassle on travel days. Herschel has some other great packable options as well. The best travel bags are the ones that don’t take up any room.

Here are 15 other packable travel accessories to help you maximize limited suitcase space!

Travel gear doesn’t always have to be purely functional. As long as it does the job, a stylish bag can be just as practical on your trip and also helps you blend in with the locals.

Hello, I’m going to begin travelling full-time this summer, and plan to bring carry-on luggage only to fit European airline restrictions. I end up back on this blog pretty frequently looking for tips, and was wondering, would you recommend I bring my regular, faux leather handbag alongside my carry-on, or would it be worth it to buy a packable handbag like the Patagonia lightweight travel courier? I love the look, feel, and functionality of my existing bag, but it’s not the most lightweight or packable thing, and I’m concerned it might get me in trouble with airlines like EasyJet, as I might not be able to stuff it into my main bag with everything else in there, whereas with a packable bag I would likely be able to. My only concern with the packable bag is that it doesn’t look nearly as nice as the one I already have. What do you think?

Meghan

I saw some pintrest posts that touted stylist diaper bags as the best travel bags — some are nice and convertible so that you can use them as a tote, backpack, purse, overnight bag, etc.

I haven’t found one recently that does the back pack conversion, but there are some nice ones out there.

Plus they always have tons of pockets plus often come with smaller matching bags for organizing inside.

alex

Hi Meghan! I’ve also heard about diaper bags too. Let us know if you find a nice one and I’ll also keep an eye out. Thanks!

Katy

While traveling, I found this multi functional 3-way bag. You can easily convert it to wear across your body during the day, as a hobo style shoulder bag for the evening, or a backpack when your hands need to be free. You can easily fit a large camera, bottle of water & a travel guide book inside, with space to spare.

oooh I LOVE it! Very cute!

  • Cotopaxi Just Made My Favorite Carry-On Even Better

bag for travel walking

I bought my first Cotopaxi Allpa two years ago, and I wrote about how much I loved it for the Strategist. (It also happens to be this site’s pick for the best overall carry-on backpack .) Since then, I’ve used it on trips all over the world — to Italy, Thailand, Iceland, and Mexico. For all its many charms, however, I have found a few things about my first 35-liter Allpa that are frustrating. For one, the original design doesn’t have a water-bottle pocket. Second, though there’s a smaller pocket on the front of the backpack, it’s a little bit large for tucking in, say, your phone, your passport, and a pair of headphones . I usually solved that problem by having an additional little fanny pack that I wore while traveling, which worked well enough, but I still longed for just one extra smaller compartment. So I was thrilled when I learned that last month, Cotopaxi released a redesigned version of the Allpa that addressed many of the small annoyances I had with an otherwise perfect bag, and the brand sent me one to try out.

The new Allpa design includes a small pocket at the front of the bag, just the right size for a phone or a set of keys, and, blessedly, also has a stretchy water-bottle pocket that easily fits my go-to Owala bottle . Cotopaxi also added an unobtrusive pass-through strap on the back of the pack, which allows you to easily secure the backpack to the handle of a rolling bag, another useful feature when using it as part of your carry-on set. And, crucially, it redesigned the pack to improve the weight distribution, something I immediately noticed when I tested out the new design by lugging a bunch of books back to the library. The straps sat more comfortably against my shoulders and didn’t pull on my lower back, even when loaded down with a laptop, a toiletry bag , a spare pair of sneakers, and four days’ worth of outfits.

To make room for the redesign, Cotopaxi did eliminate one of my previous favorite features — a back zipper that allowed you to access the biggest interior compartment without opening up the entire clamshell. (It kept the padded back laptop pocket, so there’s still a compartment that’s close to your back, for better security.) But I found as I was wearing the new Allpa around I didn’t miss that back zipper that much. I had been mostly using it to access my water bottle, it turns out.

The new Allpa is, like the original, available in several sizes, including a very roomy 42L and a just-right-for-a-weekend-trip 28L. It’s available in a range of colors, like green, gray, and turquoise, though the bag is now made entirely out of recycled fabrics. It also comes in the “Del Día” option, an eye-catching mismatched-patchwork colorway made out of leftover dead-stock fabric. No two Del Días are alike, which makes it handy for immediately identifying your backpack in a sea of black and gray luggage in an overhead compartment, baggage claim, or luggage rack. If you prefer a dark backpack but you’d like a little bit of that patchwork, Cotopaxi recently released a series of “Del Día Dark” Allpas, using the same mix-and-match colors for the zippers and accents on the backpacks.

Like the first version, the new and improved Allpa’s tuckaway straps make it easy to fit it into the overhead cabin or under the seat in front of me, and I usually pair it with a roller bag for a carry-on-only trip. But I’ve found it just as useful for casual weekend trips, thanks to the zipped mesh compartments that function as built-in packing cubes and the roomy design. I’ve lugged it everywhere, and it remains my favorite go-to carry-on bag.

Customer review: “This bag is so cute and easy to carry. I’m a mom on the go and my bags always get dirty. This bag is so comfortable and easy to clean. The strap is nice and wide and comfortable and the bag is big enough for me to even carry my Owala in it! If you’re on the fence, come on over. This bag rules!”

How to Shop for Travel-Friendly Crossbody Bags

elle line break

  • Look for bags that close securely. Zippered or lock closure tops are best. Snaps and magnets come in second, and open tops offer the least protection against theft.
  • Before purchasing, make sure a bag will hold all of your necessities. If you’re a seasoned traveler, you likely know which items you like to keep on your throughout your days. But if not, give it some thought. Will you want to keep your passport on your person, or are you comfortable using the hotel safe? Do you carry an inhaler or EpiPen? Is your wallet large, or do you have a sleek card holder? Think these things over and be sure your new bag will hold everything you want it to. Often, it’s better to go slightly larger than you might initially think you need. Size up.
  • Ideally, the bag will feel comfortable to wear and will have a thick, perhaps even padded, strap. It’s also preferable for straps to be adjustable.
  • The more organizational features, the better.
  • A bag that can be worn in multiple ways or has a versatile style is best if you want to pack light. Some bags won’t transition well to a fancy dinner or night out. If you only plan to bring one bag, keep this in mind.
  • If you’re more concerned with practicality, you’ll definitely want to look for durable, weather-resistant materials, so you don’t have to worry about getting caught in the rain.

Why Crossbody Bags Are Good for Travelers

linebreak

  • If worn as a true crossbody, it’s not as easy for the bag to slip off your shoulder—or to be snatched—as it is with a tote, shoulder, or handbag. Yet, it still provides that handsfree convenience. The same can be said for backpacks.
  • From a fashion perspective, crossbody bags are easier to dress up than backpacks and are likely to match with more of your outfits.

Best Garment Bags 0 Hero

By: Ethan Brehm Published: Sep 09, 2024

Traveling with your normal, casual apparel is hard enough. But if you’re jet-setting for business purposes, you likely also need to bring a suit and tie along, which poses an even bigger issue: moving your suit from A to B without wrinkling and/or creasing it. But that’s exactly what garment bags are for. If you really care about your formal wear, you might want to invest in a dedicated, purpose-built vessel for transporting it. Below, you can find our favorite garment bags after testing the best ones on the market.

Article Overview

How We Tested

What to look for, garment bags comparison chart, what is a garment bag, types of garment bags, honorable mentions, tested: the best gmt watches for stylish travel.

Best Garment Bags Tested

There are a lot of options out there for garment bags. And if you’ve purchased a luggage set , it’s pretty likely that you’ve got one. However, not all of them are created equal. These units can range from the affordable (~$100) to the luxurious (~$2,500). We’ve aimed to explore options at both ends of the spectrum and everywhere in between, as well as tackle what warrants this price range.

To create our shortlist for testing, we really explored this space to figure out which brands were most respected and why. We also looked at some of the lesser-known boutique or heritage offerings from smaller companies you may not be familiar with, looking at materials, construction process, aesthetic, and features. From there, we sourced our units for testing and got hands-on with each garment bag, looking at how well they felt and operated, along with how they looked in person. Our findings and more are detailed below.

Closure: The format of your garment bag will likely determine both how well it keeps your clothes wrinkle-free and how compact it is. However, this is always a compromise, as the two factors are opposing. Some garment bags roll up, making them very compact but increasing the risk of wrinkles. Others offer a more gentle half-fold, but take up more space than their rolling counterparts. You’ll have to decide which is more important to you: fewer wrinkles or better packability.

Exterior Material: You’re probably unlikely to find yourself in a thunderstorm in your travels, but it’s still a good idea to consider the possibility. That means you should pay attention to the external material of your garment bag. Many nowadays are made with coated fabrics that help repel water — keeping your suit safer than it might otherwise be. The tradeoff here is that more weatherproof and durable fabrics tend to be more expensive, so you’ll have to weight the options against your budget.

Interior Lining: Typically, this is not an important consideration, as most every garment bag on the market has a soft liner that’s easy on your delicate apparel. Still, it’s important to be aware of the liner material and how it might affect your travels and your garments. As you might expect, the softer the material, the better it likely is for your suit(s).

Carry Handles: Much like the closure style, the way you carry your garment bag is a fairly big factor to consider. Some offer little more than a pair of suitcase handles, while others might offer wheels and telescoping handles or even backpack straps. If you’re carrying multiple bags through the airport, one of the latter options might be the best. But if you’re only hauling the garment bag, then suitcase handles will work just fine.

Extraneous Details: First and foremost, your garment bag should be a suit-hauler. But they often offer a bit more than can make them all the more enticing for travel. In some cases, they have a couple of extra pockets for accessories and/or other gear. Others are more comprehensive in how much they can carry. It all depends on your individual needs. Just be aware of all these factors when making your considerations.

Halfday Travel The Garment Duffel 45L F 7 24 1

  • Garment bag doubles as a duffel
  • Water-resistant materials
  • Handsome look
  • Comes with 2 shoe compartments
  • Zipper can be too easy to unzip
  • Handles aren’t the most comfortable

Best Budget Garment Bag: Just because you own nice suits doesn’t mean that those suits cost you an exorbitant amount of money. To go along with your budget three-piece is this The Garment Duffel from Halfday Travel, a large-sized 45-liter option made from a water-resistant 420D woven polyester exterior and water-resistant taslan interior. Weighing just 2.3lbs, this two-in-one bag fits a suit in the outer layer like a regular garment bag but then structures itself so you can load five days’ worth of clothing inside like a duffel bag. Currently available in nine different colors, it also comes in at under $100 !

Halfday Travel The Garment Duffel 45L F 7 24 2

From premium, durable materials to an innovative design that brings a ton of versatility, The Garment Duffel from Halfday is a fantastic budget bag. In fact, I honestly couldn’t figure out why the price tag was so low. In my short time using it, I had essentially no real unexpected complaints. Looks-wise, the Halfday is a classy carry-on with handsome styling and texturing. Plus, I’m a fan of the brand’s attractive logo, which is front and center here.

I’d be lying if I said the zipper design didn’t boggle my mind, and I’m glad I wasn’t the one in charge of figuring out the specific mechanics of such a spiraling setup. I thought it would be difficult to get my suit removed when zipped up as a duffel but this wasn’t a problem. Though I supposed if you had heavier items inside, it could be. Oh yeah, there’s also a pair of shoe sleeves, which easily held my size 12.5 dress shoes, so that’s a definite plus.

Even though I tested this bag in the summertime, it makes a solid winter-spring option with its water-resistant materials. Although, it’s important to note that the zippers don’t claim to be water-resistant.

Halfday Travel The Garment Duffel 45L F 7 24 3

The Not So Good

If I had to quibble, I’d say The Garment Duffel is a little too easy to unzip. Meaning, it’s intended to retain some structure for doubling as a duffel bag. And since this thing can unfold all the way, that could pose an issue if you only planned on taking out 1 or 2 items without unraveling and spilling its entire contents. However, if you’re just a little bit careful, you shouldn’t have any real issues here.

Also, while pretty durable, the handles on top weren’t the most comfortable to carry, even when wrapped. Likewise, the Velcro wrap was a bit rigid and didn’t feel great in my hand

Verdict: A garment bag with duffel bag versatility, The Garment Duffel from Halfday Travel is a superb bag with a unique design. And if you consider its durable materials and handsome appearance, you’d be shocked to find out that it’s one of the most affordable options out there. We had small complaints about the comfort of the top handles and the zipper, which was too easy to open accidentally, but all systems go for this garment bag.

Size: 22″ x 12″ x 12″ Materials: Water-resistant 420D woven polyester Suit Capacity: 1 + other clothing and shoes

Henty Wingman Commuter Suit Bag F 7 24 1

  • 2-in-1 option great for bike riding or walking
  • Built-in padded laptop sleeve
  • Super comfortable against back
  • Comes with rain poncho to cover top
  • Lots of extra gear pouches
  • Needs clips for bottom of garment compartment

Best for Commuting: Most garment bags out there are decent for travel but are cumbersome and difficult to manage for just about any other kind of commuting. By contrast, it seems like the Henty Wingman Commuter Suit Bag was made to be good on any kind of transport. With backpack straps, it’s easy to haul around from cab to train to plane and back again, but it still features a roll-style closure that will help keep your suit wrinkle-free. It’s also water-resistant and even has a dedicated laptop sleeve — making it great for bike commuting to and from work in the city, as well.

Henty Wingman Commuter Suit Bag F 7 24 2

If you need to commute with a suit, whether by bike or train, there’s really no better option than the Henty Wingman. The structurally sound bag rolls and unrolls with ease, but the suit itself is hidden inside an accessible zippered pouch with a hanger hole up top. Aside from the laptop sleeve, this bag also comes with plenty of exterior pockets of different sizes. It can also be hung up when unfolded, making these gear pockets even more accessible. There was also a supplementary waterproof duffel that you could use for any extras, like underwear and socks. This can be attached to the Wingman if you so choose.

As a backpack, the Henty is highly comfortable and supportive, with easy-to-adjust straps for the sternum and waist. Even though the bag is water-resistant, it comes with a hi-vis orange poncho that expands to go over the top of the rolled-up pack. While I didn’t use it, there’s also a removable shoulder strap for a more casual carrying option.

Henty Wingman Commuter Suit Bag F 7 24 3

The dedicated laptop sleeve is a really nice touch here but not the most practical when it comes to execution. It adds a stiffness to the back of the bag that messes with its comfortability. I should also point out that this bag is quite heavy, even when empty. Luckily, it’s not designed to store a lot of gear, so there won’t be much added to that weight.

Also, I would’ve liked some sort of clip at the bottom of the garment compartment to prevent my suit from falling down. After all, this is designed to be held sideways. Every time I unzipped the bag, my suit wasn’t exactly how I left it.

Verdict: If you’re going to be doing any commuting with a suit, there won’t be a better option than the Henty Wingman, which can be worn as a comfortable backpack that includes tons of extras like a laptop sleeve, a rain poncho, and several gear pouches. Admittedly, the bag is heavy but you also won’t be putting a ton of gear inside. Also, we may have liked some clothing clips for the bottom of the garment compartment but that’s just a minor complaint for a really superb bag.

Size: 9″ x 11″ x 22″ Materials: Water-resistant polyester Suit Capacity: 1

Samsonite Armage II Wheeled Garment Bag F 7 24 1

  • Carry-on size
  • Super comfortable handle
  • Wet pocket for toiletries
  • Holds multiple suits
  • Has a plethora of purposeful compartments
  • Has exterior non-garment pocket
  • Dedicated shoe pockets are small
  • Pretty heavy at 10.7lbs

Best Wheeled: While most garment bags come as handled options meant to be carried, Samsonite has an impressive wheeled suitcase intended for protecting your finest suits. Building off of the brand’s status as a mainstay in the luggage industry, the Armage II looks like a standard carry-on bag from the outside but inside is purpose-built to keep your garments neat and tidy. Not only does this bag offer enough space for your suit and all the necessary accessories like two pairs of shoes and even some toiletries, but it also features Samsonite’s Tru-Trac GT wheels, sturdy YKK zippers, and a telescoping handle for convenient hauling through the airport, train station, or even city streets. And yes, it’s compact enough that you could bring it into the airplane cabin with you when you travel. Also, this is backed by Samsonite’s 10-year limited warranty.

Samsonite Armage II Wheeled Garment Bag F 7 24 2

In terms of pure capability, the Samsonite Armage II is the best we tested. Not only can it hold several suits if you really want it to (there’s no official capacity but we got 3 inside no problem) but it also acts as a two-sided hanging closet. The left side features a pair of “structured” mesh zippered pockets at eye level, which you can use for rolled ties or handkerchiefs –– things you don’t want to get smashed. I particularly loved the water-resistant zippered pocket on the right side of the bag, which stands about 4″ high and is transparent enough for you to see what you’re grabbing inside.

There are several more zippered pockets on this side of the bag, both mesh and opaque. And if that’s not enough, there’s a sizeable exterior pocket for books, papers, or even an iPad to easily access in flight so you don’t need a second carry-on for these things.

I’m admittedly not super familiar with all of Samsonite’s range but the rolling handle has to be one of the most comfortable I’ve ever used in my hand with its plush padded grip and easy adjustment button. Meanwhile, the wheels are fine but I didn’t notice anything superb to write home about; they were perfectly serviceable.

Samsonite Armage II Wheeled Garment Bag F 7 24 3

For a piece of rolling luggage, the Armage II is rather wide, although 22″ across is pretty standard for a garment bag. I just felt like I was going to trip people as I walked past them. Keep in mind as well, this bag is pretty darn heavy at nearly 11lbs, and that’s when it’s empty!

It’s also important to note that the dedicated shoe pockets at the bottom of the bag are rather small. The site’s picture shows a pair of heels in each pouch but realistically men are going to use garment bags just as often as women. I couldn’t fit my own size 12.5 shoes in these pockets so I wrapped them in a separate shoe bag I have and put them behind the divider on this side of the garment bag, which worked just fine (as long as you’re only traveling with one or two suits).

Verdict: Extremely capable, Samsonite’s Armage II is a carry-on sized garment bag with tons of pockets and compartments, as well as enough room for several of your suits. We loved the dedicated water-resistant wet pocket for toiletries, the structured necktie pockets, and the exterior compartment for any non-garment items for accessing in-flight. Admittedly, the bag is heavy at nearly 11lbs and the shoe pockets will be small for most men’s shoes, but this is a quality bag that does a whole lot that others don’t do.

Satchel and Page Garment Bag F 7 24 1

  • Stunning appearance
  • Premium materials
  • Very durable, especially on the inside
  • Built-in shoe pockets
  • Suit entryway doesn’t open all the way
  • A bit heavy

Best Traditional Garment Bag: If you’re looking for a more traditionally-styled garment bag, you could do far worse than this selection from Satchel & Page. Not only is this bag drop-dead gorgeous, but its British waxed canvas and Italian leather exterior is also durable and tough enough that this could end up becoming an heirloom piece you pass on to your children. Of course, it also still has everything you’d expect out of a solid garment bag — like a 600D waterproof nylon lining, organizational pockets , a complete-access opening main compartment, and adjustable leather shoulder straps. The bag also comes with a lifetime warranty from the brand, which is awesome.

Satchel and Page Garment Bag F 7 24 2

If you’re looking to spend around $500 on a garment bag, you won’t be disappointed with this pick from Satchel & Page. The obvious selling point here is its appearance, with arguably the most handsome exterior on this list, making good use of its leather and waxed canvas shell. The latter isn’t too “slimy” like some waxed canvas products have a tendency to be, nor does it smell waxy, while the leather expresses a beautiful leather aroma that’s among the best I’ve ever experienced. And that’s not to mention the brass hardware that looks like it was actually sourced from antique luggage.

If the outside has a timeless aesthetic that’s worthy of passing down to your children, the interior is all business, with plenty of storage pockets that can be easily accesses when you hang this bag up. The nylon lining feels robust and highly sturdy –– arguably the most so of the units I tested. The shoe pockets were large enough to house one of my size 12.5 shoes each, plus each pocket has a reliable zipper closure.

Satchel and Page Garment Bag F 7 24 3

The biggest drawback of the Satchel & Page Garment Bag is its availability. At any given moment, the brand’s website will say that the bag is “Out of Stock.” The good news is that it frequently comes back into stock (this back-and-forth happened a couple of times during our sourcing and testing process). Also, many will note that the entryway for the suit compartment is a bit tight, making it a bit challenging to place the outfit inside with ease. However, this isn’t a deal breaker. The bag is also a bit heavy, so keep that in mind as well.

Verdict: Premium in every sense of the word, the Satchel & Page Garment Bag is one of our favorites for how beautiful it looks on the outside while being a total workhorse on the inside –– with top-notch construction for both. Availability will be hit or miss here but keep an eye out on the brand’s website. Also, while the bag is somewhat heavy and the suit entryway can be tight, these aren’t deal breakers for one of the finest garment bags in the game.

Size: 20″ x 22″ x 2.5″ Materials: Waxed canvas and Italian leather exterior with 600D waterproof nylon lining Suit Capacity: 2

Shinola The Convertible Traveler Garment Bag F 7 24 1

  • 2 bags that can be used together or separately
  • Uses premium materials
  • Spacious duffel
  • Very sturdy
  • Not a lot of features on garment bag portion
  • Buttons challenging to put back together

Best Duffel: Alongside their stupendous watches and vintage Americana-inspired gear , Shinola also makes a wide variety of excellent luggage for travel. As such, it should come as no surprise that they’ve built a spectacular garment bag. Balancing form and function, this three-in-one unit features a folding garment bag snapped against a duffel bag, with both able to be used separately as well. Constructed with canvas and Italian Vachetta leather, either bag can be attached to the removable shoulder strap and is closed up with a brass zipper.

Shinola The Convertible Traveler Garment Bag F 7 24 2

The Convertible Traveler from Shinola is a unique piece in that it houses a duffel bag and garment bag in one unit, but keeps them segmented in the best way possible. Utilizing heavy-duty snap buttons to attach to garment bag to the duffel, the brand eliminates any ambiguity by making the access point for the duffel a zipper instead. I was never confused when it came to which compartment I was trying to access. Inside the spacious duffel is a sturdy shoe bag and attachable shoulder strap to make this easier to carry. The main hook of this product is that you can use the duffel and garment bag together or separate them entirely. I tried using both of them individually, and had no issues. I especially loved the soft handles on the duffel.

I also loved how the bottom of the suit compartment eliminates the need for clips or harnesses, which could wrinkle the material, in favor of a pinching function that uses the bag’s own weight to keep the suits in place. And I will say, this worked like a charm.

Shinola The Convertible Traveler Garment Bag F 7 24 3

If you’re looking for extra features inside the garment bag itself, you might be disappointed here. There is only one small pocket at the top. On the other hand, the duffel has some smaller pouches and even a windowed slot for a name tag or business card.

Like most of these high-end garment bags, the Shinola bag is quite heavy. But at least you can shed weight with its different usage options. My biggest complaint is the amount of time it took to pop those snap buttons back on to attach the garment bag back to the duffel. One time I was a single button off and had to start over. Lastly, this bag is a bit pricey for what you get. Sure, it’s unique, but the price tag also feels superfluous.

Verdict: A three-in-one option for those who want some flexibility in their lives, The Convertible Traveler by Shinola is both a duffel and a garment bag, with distinct opening mechanisms (a zipper or snap buttons, respectively) and heavy-duty materials to keep the contents protected. We loved the inherent suit “pinching” feature that used the bag’s own weight to keep garments in place, as well as the spacious duffel bag. On the other hand, it took some time when it came to attaching the two units back together.

Size: 14″ x 22.75″ x 10″ Materials: Canvas and Italian Vachetta leather Suit Capacity: 2

Ghurka Packet No 83 Garment Bag F 7 24 1

  • The classiest option you’ll find
  • Holds up to 3 suits
  • Incredibly smooth zipper action
  • Meticulously integrated stitching design
  • Uses high-end leather
  • Can be customized and monogrammed

Best High-End: Far and away the priciest bag on our list, Ghurka’s Packet No. 83 Garment Bag might also be the most beautiful and finest-made on the planet. Crafted in its entirety from top-grain leather , it features a convertible hanging system to meet all your needs (with an included hanger), can fit up to three suits at a time, has a heavy-duty brass zipper, comes with an adjustable shoulder strap, and even comes with its own luggage tag. It’s an investment, to be sure, but this is the kind of bag that will be in your family for generations, so long as you take good care of it. If you want to personalize your bag, the company allows you to customize and monogram your bag as well.

Ghurka Packet No 83 Garment Bag F 7 24 2

If you want class, look no further than this Ghurka garment bag, which has a jaw-dropping exterior that felt like a privilege to hold in my hand. The chestnut leather shell isn’t just sturdy (and pleasant smelling) but its stitching is so meticulous, with integrated design via needlepoint as well as subtle embossing. Unlike the Satchel & Page, which boasted a marvelous exterior with a rugged interior, the inside of this bag matches its outside, and without losing any ruggedness in the process. Unzip this part to reveal the handsome cotton twill lining.

One small detail I really dug was the dual-fastening hanger loophole, which allows you to remove your suit without having to lower the hanger into the compartment and risk wrinkling your outfit. Like the Shinola above, the lower portion of this bag features a band that pinches your suits at the bottom without the need for extra clamps.

In terms of function, this bag is superb as well, albeit simple and straightforward in a good way; there’s just the right amount of extra pockets and compartments. Likewise, the zipper construction on this bag happens to be the breeziest to use without being too loose. The brass zipper never got stuck despite the curves of the bag. Aside from being able to hold three suits, which is around the most on this guide, the No. 83 also has a large front pocket and some

Ghurka Packet No 83 Garment Bag F 7 24 3

With the meticulous design methods used by Ghurka and the steep price tag, it’s hard to imagine that anything would need to be changed with this garment bag… aside from the price tag itself. Admittedly, $2,500 is a lot of money for a mere garment bag but if class is what you’re after, you’ll be willing to pay the cost.

Verdict: Steeply priced at nearly $2,500, the Ghurka No. 83 Garment Bag is at the top of its class for a reason with beautiful design points and strategically integrated stitching. Inside holds a trio of suits, along with some extras thanks to its external pockets. We loved the smooth zipper action of the brass hardware as well as the clever hanger removal system.

Size: 23″ x 18″ Materials: Leather and twill Suit Capacity: 3

Most suitcases, backpacks, and duffel bags do a pretty good job of hauling gear to and from various destinations. However, they were not made for transporting suits. Typically made of high-end fabrics, suits are actually a bit more delicate than most other menswear and, as a result, are prone to wrinkling and creasing. Garment bags, however, were made specifically to minimize that possibility. Their format is well-suited to suits, no pun intended, by offering the ability to store them without folding them in a way that might crease or wrinkle them. Even still, some are better than others.

Folding: Like a bi- or tri-fold wallet, folding garment bags will have creases or perforations where you’re supposed to fold them. These are the most common type of garment bags.

Rolling: As opposed to folding bags, rolling bags are intended to literally roll up your suit, not dissimilar to a sleeping bag. These will be much thicker but also won’t crease your suit as easily.

2-in-1: Exactly what it sounds like, a 2-in-1 garment bag is good at being folding or rolling bags, and can serve both purposes.

Packable: Unlike other options that are meant to stand on their own, packable bags are intended to fit inside your suitcase for travel. It should also be noted that many folding options can be packable as well.

Away makes some of our favorite suitcases and also has a classy yet straightforward garment bag option, with a fair price to boot. We couldn’t get hands-on with this bag but still wanted to mention it.

Like Away, TUMI is a force to be reckoned with in the luggage world. As such, it makes a solid wheeled garment bag option as well, with a quartet of omnidirectional wheels. However, we opted for the Samsonite above for all that it can do.

While it won’t look as good as some of the others I found, Eagle Creek makes a super cheap option in their Pack-It Specter Medium Garment Bag .

Briggs & Riley also makes a classy-looking bag in their Baseline , but not quite on the same level as a couple of the ones we included above.

Mark & Graham’s Commuter 2-in-1 Garment Bag looks more like a duffel bag than a garment bag, despite the name. Nevertheless, the Shinola above is a better “duffel” option even if it is a bit pricier.

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
  • Cost: USD $15.00
  • Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

  • Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
  • Cost: USD $8.00
  • Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

  • Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
  • Cost: Free to enter
  • Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

GUM Department Store

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

The six-pillared five-domed Smolensk Cathedral is the main attraction. It was built to resemble the Kremlin’s Assumption Cathedral and its facade boasts beautiful snowy white walls and a pristine golden onion dome as its centerpiece. It’s the oldest structure in the convent, built from 1524 -1525, and is situated in the center of the complex between the two entrance gates.

Godzillas Hostel

Godzillas Hostel is located in the center of Moscow, just a short walk from all the major tourist attractions and the metro station.

  • Towels Included

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Travelpro’s New VersaPack+ Luggage Solved My Recent Packing Dilemma

My trusty hard-side suitcases didn’t have enough storage for everything I needed to bring. Enter the soft-side Carry-On Spinner and the travel tote bag.

travelpro versapack carry on suitcase

If you buy something from the links on this page, we may earn a commission. Why Trust Us?

A couple of weeks ago, my fiancé and I were embarking on our first-ever trip to Montreal as a little end-of-summer getaway . To get there, we took a train upstate to meet a couple of our friends, then drove with them the rest of the way. Because of this (and the fact that it was a four-day trip), I knew it would not be wise to bring my large hardside luggage. But, my smaller, carry-on hardside also didn’t have as much room as I wanted. I was debating bringing my bulky duffel bag with it when a duo of luggage from Travelpro’s new VersaPack+ line showed up at my desk.

Travelpro launched its latest line of luggage, the VersaPack+, at the beginning of August. This collection includes soft-side checked luggage in two sizes and soft-side carry-on suitcases in two sizes. This line also features the VersaPack+ Lightweight Underseat Travel Tote Bag, which makes for a nice addition to the luggage, and all of these items are available in four colors on Amazon. The brand’s website offers sets and limited-edition colorways, so you can get VersaPack+ checked and carry-on suitcases together.

Travelpro VersaPack+ Carry-On Spinner

VersaPack+ Carry-On Spinner

If you’ve been wanting to get a soft-side suitcase or are looking to get one as a gift , the VersaPack+ collection is a great option. It easily solved my packing dilemma. The Carry-On Spinner Suitcase has a deep well that I filled with all of my jeans, light sweaters, pajamas, and other clothes. It also includes a mesh compartment on the other side where I stored socks and such. Plus, it came with a unit of small compartments that you can attach to the inside of the suitcase or leave out. I attached mine for the trip, just in case I needed a little more storage for souvenirs.

interior of travelpro suitcase

Perhaps the feature I liked the most about the suitcase, though, is its lock function. On the side, there is a three-number code you can use to lock your luggage. But what I really liked is that you inserted the zippers to lock it, so no one could open the main section of the suitcase. I didn’t feel the need to actually set the lock on this trip (I would utilize that feature if I were flying , though), but I liked being able to store the zippers in the slots on the side and easily eject them with the push of a button. With so many zippers on suitcases, this function made it quick and easy to locate the main zippers every time. It’s a small thing, but I found it to be a very nice touch.

Travelpro VersaPack+ Lightweight Underseat Travel Tote Bag

VersaPack+ Lightweight Underseat Travel Tote Bag

That said, if there’s only one thing you get from this collection, let it be the VersaPack+ Lightweight Underseat Travel Tote Bag . This is what truly resolved my minor packing crisis ahead of my trip. This tote bag is just the right size — not too big, not too small. I was able to store my toiletry bag, makeup bag, hair straightener, and an extra pair of shoes I never ended up wearing — and I still had a little room left for souvenirs. It held more than I expected but wasn’t cumbersome or uncomfortable to carry. I often slid the back loop over my suitcase handle so I could easily carry them together, though. My only gripe is that I wish the tote could lock onto the suitcase so I could pull the two as a unit together up a flight of stairs.

travelpro under seat tote bag

Overall, I loved using my new VersaPack+ carry-on suitcase and tote bag. The two held everything I needed and a little more, were compact enough to store on an overhead rack on a train and then in a car trunk, and housed plenty of compartments for easy organization. Plus, the Elemental Blue color I got my pieces in is so beautiful. As much as I love traveling for the adventure, culture, and exploration vibes, I’m also excited for my upcoming trips because it means I get to break out this stunning duo again.

Forgetting his travel bag and ditching the flip flops, Jason Kelce makes ‘Monday Night Countdown’ debut memorable

Kelce left his travel bag in the truck and was forced to purchase a new white button-up from a local mall, which analyst Ryan Clark joked was from Lululemon.

Jason Kelce is ready to begin his rookie year as an ESPN commentator.

Jason Kelce is keeping himself busy postretirement.

The former Eagles center swapped his football for a microphone and his flip flops for dress shoes as he made his regular-season ESPN Monday Night Countdown debut in Santa Clara, Calif. alongside anchor Scott Van Pelt and analysts Marcus Spears and Ryan Clark.

But one thing he forgot to swap out: his travel bag.

» READ MORE: Jason Kelce makes a cameo in the ‘Manningcast’ musical commercial. Here are the outtakes we missed.

Here’s everything you may have missed from Kelce’s unforgettable debut:

Wardrobe malfunction

The future Hall of Famer started the show off on a strong note by acknowledging that he was wearing a dress shirt straight off the rack. Kelce left his travel bag in the truck and was forced to purchase a new white button-up from a local mall which Clark joked was from Lululemon.

Where’s Kylie when we need her?

Trading in flip flops and Luchador mask

Despite the wardrobe malfunction, Kelce still ditched his iconic flip flops and Luchador mask for a more dapper look.

But the suit jacket didn’t make it to the broadcast.

Kelce’s fantasy team

In case you were wondering what other hobbies a retired NFL player has in his free time — fantasy football is one of them.

When discussing the Browns’ performance in the season opener against the Cowboys, the Cleveland Heights native Kelce said he has Cleveland as his fantasy defense (sorry, Eagles fans).

» READ MORE: The top 10 places you’ll see Jason Kelce this NFL season — even though he’s supposed to be retired

Kelce’s experience

It wasn’t all jokes for Kelce. He leaned on his own experience and relatability to help analyze Aaron Rodgers’ return to Monday Night Football after tearing his Achilles four snaps into the 2023 season.

Similarly, Kelce tore his MCL and partially tore his ACL in 2012. “Coming off of that injury you just wait for that first contact — until it happens you don’t know how it’s going to feel or what’s going to happen,” he said.

You can’t nail them all

One of Kelce’s pregame predictions — about the 49ers struggling without Christian McCaffrey, who was a late scratch — didn’t age particular well as San Francisco went on to win easily, 32-19.

Can’t escape Kelce

Even during commercial breaks, Kelce’s face still appears. His new Campbell’s Chunky soup commercial is a good reminder.

The spot features Kelce laying fireside on a furry carpet, wearing an Eagles robe and flip flops while he’s eating Campbell’s soup.

» READ MORE: How former Eagles reacted to the team’s Week 1 win over the Packers: ‘Thank you Giants 😂😂😂😂'

Kelce will appear on Monday Night Countdown every week and he’ll be closer to home as the Eagles host the Atlanta Falcons next Monday. If he forgets his shirt next time I’m sure we have a jersey that will fit ….
