Congratulating the operators for their outstanding efforts over a significant period, Ecotourism Australia Chief Executive, Elissa Keenan advised “our new Hall of Fame entrants have been ECO Certified for more than twenty years and are among Australia’s first sustainable tourism innovators. They join 50 operators who been awarded Hall of Fame status since 1997.

“Similarly, our Green Travel Leaders, who are tourism businesses that have reached a decade of ECO Certification, should be commended for their continuous commitment to global sustainability standards.

“With travellers increasingly seeking transformative and sustainable experiences that make a difference, these operators are at the forefront of world-class sustainability leadership.

Ecotourism Australia’s ECO Certification program standard is recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The certification not only provides operators with key business development tools and equips them to champion their dedication to sustainability in tourism, but it ensures continuous accountability towards long-term sustainability goals.

Joh Bloomberg, Safety, Environment and Community Manager at Tasmanian Walking Company, this year recognised as a Green Travel Leader, commented “certification has acted as a super helpful signpost, pointing out which direction we should walk in.

“By using the Ecotourism Australia accreditation and certification process we have been able to anchor our passion and ideas in a solid, usable, and useful framework that helps us build on our current initiatives and shows the way for continuous improvement across the business.”

25 years of certification 2023 is a milestone year for Ecotourism Australia, with 14 businesses noted for reaching 25 years of ECO Certification. Already recognised in the Hall of Fame, these operators are the original pioneers of ecotourism globally.

Richard Berman-Hardman, General Manager of Skyrail Rainforest Cableway in Far North Queensland, went on to say “as an ecotourism leader, we are driven by a sustainability mission which sees us continuously challenging ourselves to learn and improve how we operate.

“We are also privileged to have the opportunity to connect thousands of people from all over the world with the story of the oldest, most important rainforest environment on Earth and we are committed to raising awareness and delivering an experience which builds enthusiasm and passion for the ecosystem we present.

“We feel that Ecotourism Australia understands this and shares our vision for a progressive, sustainable mindset within the visitor economy. ECO certification provides assurances to prospective visitors that they are choosing an ethical, well managed product and we couldn’t imagine operating without this seal of approval.”

All operators certified by Ecotourism Australia are featured on the all-in-one sustainable travel platform, the Green Travel Guide. The Green Travel Guide allows travellers to find over 1,800 certified and sustainable experiences across Australia and book directly with operators.

Tourism honour for luxury Kimberley cruiser

North star cruises enters western australia’s tourism hall of fame.

Its official – North Star Cruises Australia is headed for the Western Australian tourism Hall of Fame.

The company recently secured its third consecutive win at the 2007 WA Tourism Awards and, entry into the coveted Hall of Fame!

North Star’s general manger, Mr. Peter Trembath, claimed entry into the Hall of Fame as industry recognition of North Star’s sustained performance at the highest level.

“Our guests come aboard with the highest expectations yet they consistently acknowledge that their experience on the True North was the best holiday that they have ever had”!

“Now our peers in the tourism industry have formally acknowledged the same” Mr Trembath said. “A trip on the True North is the best adventure-holiday you can have”!

In accepting the 2007 award, North Star’s managing director, Craig Howson, cautioned that industrialization was threatening the company’s principle area of operation. Mr Howson strongly recommended that more responsible planning was necessary to preserve the Kimberley region’s stunning wilderness qualities.

The company’s much lauded adventure-cruise ship True North, is currently cruising in Papua New Guinea and will visit Sydney over the Christmas/New Yea r period.

Fact of the day

Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana was born in New Eagle, PA. The three-time Super Bowl MVP played 13 seasons in San Francisco and was known for his calm demeanor in tense moments. At Super Bowl XXIII the 49ers trailed Cincinnati 16-13 with just over three minutes to play and 92 yards to the end zone. In the huddle Montana motioned toward the stands and said, “Hey, isn’t that John Candy over there?” Moments later Montana started an 11-play, game-winning drive. He finished it with a 10-yard scoring strike to John Taylor with 34 seconds to play. The 49ers selected Montana in the third round of the 1979 NFL draft. In regular season and postseason play for the 49ers, Montana threw for 283 touchdowns and nearly 40,000 yards.

John Todd, WA football legend and former West Coast Eagles coach, dies aged 86

John Todd, one of the most influential figures in WA football history, has died at the age of 86.

Todd, who coached the West Coast Eagles for the 1988 and 1989 seasons, made his name in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL), first as a star player and later as a successful coach.

He burst onto the scene, debuting for South Fremantle's senior side as a 16-year-old in 1955.

He enjoyed a magical first year, taking out the Sandover Medal for the league's best and fairest player.

A headshot of John Todd talking during a TV interview, sitting in front of photo frames showing Swan Districts football teams.

Tragically, he was just 17 when he suffered a serious knee injury. It would go on to curtail what could have been one of the greatest careers of all time.

Despite the injury he managed play on, registering 132 games for South Fremantle and 13 for Western Australia.

In 1961, he was part of a WA side that won the Australian championships and Todd was judged an All Australian.

A footballer named John Todd kicks the ball in a black and white image.

He began coaching South Fremantle as player coach in 1959, at the age of 20, and by the time his coaching career had ended in 2001 he had coached six premierships.

Those were for East Fremantle (1974), South Fremantle (1997) and four for Swan Districts (1982, 1983, 1984 and 1990).

He also coached the West Coast Eagles to their first finals appearance, in 1988, when they were beaten in a thriller by Melbourne at Waverley Park.

Tributes after Hall of Fame career

West Coast CEO Don Pyke said Todd was a "key figure in making us the club that we are today".

"He was one of the club's pioneers operating with no genuine home base and with a range of other obstacles in his path," Pyke said.

"He is a legend of the game and as a club we are extremely grateful for his contribution.

"On behalf of everyone at the club, I offer our deepest condolences to John's family, friends and loved ones."

Todd was sacked as coach of West Coast at the end of 1989, but returned to Swan Districts the following year where he again won the WAFL premiership.

John Todd and a Swan Districts player are carried on shoulders above a crowd of fans as the team celebrates a WAFL premiership.

His final premiership came in 1997 with the club where it all began, South Fremantle.

Todd was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2003, and in 2004 was elevated to legend status in the West Australian Football Hall of Fame.

In 2011 he was inducted into South Fremantle's Hall of Fame as an inaugural legend, and was named Swan Districts' coach of the century.

AFL Commission Chair Richard Goyder, who is also chair of the Australian Football Hall of Fame, said Todd would be missed.

"John Todd was successful in every aspect of his football journey and influenced so much of West Australian football to demand the highest standards and seek for constant improvement," Goyder said.

"He moulded players into great teams but I want to acknowledge too that John had an unbelievable love of the game and football people across his entire life.

"In the privilege of being able to spend time with him in recent years, he was still a regular attendee at games, engaged with everyone across football and was a great advocate for the game and what it could do for people and communities.

A man with a blue suit and glasses speaks at a corporate lecturn

"He was incredibly tough, building his career after injury took away his playing days, and he had the highest standards as a coach."

Swan Districts vice president Andy Holmes said it was a very sad day for the club.

"His long service and success at our club was legendary," he said.

"Those players who played under Toddy knew how uncompromising he was as a coach, but he made us all better players and more importantly better men.

"The club was preparing for the annual John Todd Cup against South Fremantle at our next home game on Saturday 15 June.

"It will now be a memorial to a great man who will be sadly missed."
