Aqua Blu is transforming luxury expedition yachting in Indonesia
If you want to inspire Aqua Expeditions CEO and Founder Francesco Galli Zugaro, don’t tell him he’s brilliant, even though he is. Tell him he’s crazy. Tell him his ambitions are impossible. And then sit back and watch the magic happen. Galli Zugaro is a man who thrives on turning challenge into opportunity. The Italian-American has built a business operating luxury river cruises and yacht charters in some of the most complex destinations in the world – the Peruvian Amazon, the Vietnamese Mekong, the remotest Indonesian islands – onboard yachts he has had specially built.
Since founding Aqua Expeditions in 2007, Galli Zugaro has created several game-changing travel propositions for “affluent explorers” and been commended for feats including launching Peru's first luxury river cruise on the Amazon River, transforming luxury expedition yachting in Indonesia with Aqua Blu , and taking the first commercial superyacht ( Aqua Mare ) to the Galapagos. And with a fleet of six boats and counting, he’s not done yet.
As Aqua Expeditions prepares to announce its next project, we take a deep dive into Galli Zugaro’s greatest passions, chart his journey to success, and unveil the next steps of his master plan – which may soon be open to strategic investment.
Francesco Galli Zugaro, CEO of Aqua Expeditions
Where did your passion for travel stem from?
Francesco Galli Zugaro: Growing up in 16 countries put the travel bug in me. My dad was Managing Director for Latin America for Alitalia – it was in his blood to travel and this passed down to me. When my parents divorced, I started living with my mom and my stepdad; he was Bureau Chief for TIME magazine in many countries so we moved around from Germany to Lebanon to Israel to Cyprus to Italy, and so forth. After later graduating from Boston, I started working with a private equity group in South America that was investing in telecom and tourism. I ran the telecom startup for five years and then moved over to a small ship expedition investment that we made in the Galapagos. That was how I cut my teeth in travel.

‘the first descendant’ servers remain offline during a rough day two, chief justice roberts’s two landmark opinions turn tide toward liberty.
What lead you to leave the private equity group and set up Aqua Expeditions ?
Having left Ecuador and the investment there that we exited, I started looking around South America. Originally, I wanted to go to Argentina. There was an American gentleman called Douglas Tompkins who owned North Face and invested in buying up cattle ranches so I thought, ‘let's head out there’. On the way, I stopped at Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon and I realise no one was doing the Amazon at a really high-end level’.
I went around Iquitos with a Peruvian Navy Admiral who told me there was a 50-metre steel hull for sale around one of the tributaries. So, we took one of the Navy’s little tugboats and knocked on the shed and this guy sold it to me – I towed it away that day. I then commissioned a shipyard to obviously build it for me and brought in Jordi Puig, a very well-known Peruvian architect at the time. From buying it to launching it with heads and beds took us eight months. I don't claim to be the first, but I was the first at the top-end level catering to what I call today ‘affluent explorers’.

Why did you pick South America to launch the business?
I picked South America because I knew it. At the time, the hottest package in South America was Machu Picchu and Galapagos. Compared to Ecuador at the time, the potential growth in Peru was amazing. Orient Express had come in and has five properties and three trains so they were pumping money into promoting the destination. So, I thought, all I have to do is plug a great product in the Peruvian Amazon and it's automatically going to be packaged up into the circuit of Peru at the time. It was very easy to quickly position a top end premium product. So I sold my house in Ecuador, moved my whole family to Peru and put everything into it. It was a risk, but I have a healthy measured appetite for risk.
Why did you decide to build a boat-focused business rather than enter the hotel market?
Having operated in the Galapagos, I thought how cool is it that you can control the guest experience? To really curate a guest experience in a one-night stay in a hotel is very difficult – you can't really make an impact. With the whole yachting experience cruising experience, you can curate something and create really cool environment for guests.
From a business perspective, these businesses are very cash rich because you can have high cash flow because people are booking ahead of time, with very few cancellations because these are long-haul aspirational trips. So, this has always been an appealing a both experiential and business opportunity.
Service and hospitality is key onboard all of Aqua Expeditions' boats
Why did you decide to build 12-cabin boats, and do you have plans to create larger ships?
I wanted something small. Originally the concept was to copy the idea of houseboats from Kerala put them on Amazon. I said ‘let's do four ships with two smaller cabins’, but when I ran the numbers, it wasn't scalable – the more you grow, the more fixed costs you have. Whereas on a 12-cabin ship, you can have 24 guests, but the economies of scale, as soon as you break even, become super attractive because our variable costs are very low. The only variable costs are the additional food and additional guides; the fuel and the operation are still fixed.
Secondly, the guest experience has to be dictated by small groups. These are trips with a high level of engagement to the the connection with the guides is key. We will never do anything that's above four couples to a guide – that allows you really to have an opportunity to engage, and the guide can tailor the excursions to that group. You can’t accomplish something so unique with a 100-guest ship.
Francesco Galli Zugaro in front of luxury river boat Aqua Mekong
How many of your ships are private charters versus tour operator bookings?
About a quarter of our business is private charter. Today, all of our ships operate 48 weeks. We have 30% charters, so about 15 charters a year, and most of them are private, but a lot of them are tour operator buyouts. So, in other words, a client comes in, buys out the ship for the week, and then resells it under their brand, because they package that up with a week in Siem Reap or Ho Chi Minh.
On private charters, what happens a lot is that we have two principal clients paying and it was hard for them to figure out who gets that top owner suite. So, in our river ships we have three suites which are very similar and very large. We've done that on all the ships, and that's allowed us to appeal very well to a private charter client.
Why did you choose to focus your business on areas that are more complex than others?
I just like the challenge. I like the feeling of accomplishment when I’ve been told many times ‘no it’s impossible, or no, you’re crazy,’ and then I showcase that it can be done. It just requires a vision and the capacity to execute. What initially started off as a vision is today a realization of 300 talented individuals that are working with me, from crew to management. I like a challenge; I don't like to take the easy way out. My biggest enjoyment comes from seeing guests appreciate what we've done.
Aqua Blu is redefining luxury expedition cruising in Indonesia . What lead you to operate in this destination?
I liked Indonesia you still feel like you're exploring. Galapagos in comparison is very structured. It's an amazing guest experience, but it's very regimented. In Indonesia, you can go exploring to see volcanoes, find dragons and birds-of-paradise, sail around Raja Ampat and the Spice Islands, and see what nature throws at you. That excites me, even though it's very difficult to get the permits. It look me two years to get the permits to flag in Indonesia, but I want to bring guests to see these parts of the world that are logistically complicated, and do it at a very high level.
What are your guests looking for, and how do you match destinations to meet their expectations?
If you talk to our guests, they've done everything. They're looking for something cool, different and relaxed. They want the world-class service but they're not pretentious so they're willing to walk barefoot and let their hair down. And a destination has to check their boxes in terms of nature and wildlife.
I chose the Vietnamese Mekong because it’s an iconic river connected to two iconic World Heritage sights – Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. And then I decided to operate in three marine biosphere reserves – Galapagos, Raja Ampat and Komodo – which are on everybody's bucket list. The next destinations will have a combination of that; they'll have either iconic rivers of the world or iconic coastal cruising that will provide a wildlife and nature component, and sometimes even a cultural component.
Private beach sundowners at Komodo National Park
What are your long-term plans for the company?
I've got a very clear map of exactly where I'm going to put ships. Pretty much true to form, I've delivered one every three years. Next year will be my 18th year and I'll be delivering my sixth ship. The details of where how and where will be revealed later this year. I've scouted the destinations and built itineraries – that's what I do on my off-time; I spend weeks and months scouting different bodies of water all over the world. That's my passion; finding new logistically complex destinations that I think I could venture into; raising the capital to finance the ships, because these are getting more and more expensive; and building unique itineraries.
What opportunities are there for interested investors?
This is a very profitable business because of our fixed costs. As long as you break even, profit could be in the range of somewhere around 50%. This year we’re going to exceed our forecast and forward bookings for 2025 are very strong already.
From an investor point of view, I've obviously retained control of the business and continue to do so. It doesn't mean that that will continue to be the case in the future. I'm open minded to see if I can add value strategically from a strategic partner – I have access to capital, but that strategic capital is something that I'm looking for in the future so that I can strategically roll out my business faster, and maybe have an opportunity to bring passenger flow to us faster, rather than organically growing.
There aren’t that many Aquas around. We’re the only business that has this size, this niche, this reach. The day Aqua goes out to market to find that strategic partner, I think it’s going to attract a lot of eyes that want to get into that space.

Water parks in Italy
- June 1, 2016
- Places to Visit , Travelling Italy
Italy of course has plenty of nice coastal beaches as well as beautiful lakes like Lake Garda, where swimming in water with pleasant temperature is possible during the whole summer season. However, kids and teenagers sometimes want a bit extra water fun and the answer to that is of course a visit to an aqua park with water slides, artificial rivers and other fun stuff. In Italy there are more than 100 water parks in various sizes , so no matter where you are spending your holiday, you should have fairly easy access to water parks. Some of the most popular aqua parks are:
Table of Contents
Aqualandia is the most popular water park in Italy and also the only Italian aqua park included in the 2014 list of the world’s 25 best water parks . Aqualandia was voted the best aqua theme park in Italy 9 times. The water park covers an area of 80.000 m2 and has attractions for kids of all ages and of course also water slides and relaxing areas for adults. The park is located in the small coastal town Lido di Jesolo, 46 km from Venice. Here is how to get to Aqualandia.
Getting to Aqualandia:
- By car: If you travel by car you should exit the A4 / E70 highway from Torino to Trieste at exit S. Dona Noventa, from the exit you have about 25 km to the aqua park. If you drive from Venice you should travel direction Marco Polo airport – Portegrandi and Jeselo.
- By train: the closest train station is the one in San Donà di Piave which is about 20 km from Aqualandia. From the train station there is a local bus line to Lido di Jesolo .
- By bus: From Venice or Venice Mestre there is a regional bus line to Jesolo or Lido di Jesolo. The park also has a shuttle collecting tourists from campsites and holiday towns along the coast. More about that you can read on the park’s website :
- Aqualandia address: Via M.Buonarroti, 15, 30016 Lido di Jesolo VE, Italija
Cavena Aquapark (former Gardaland waterpark)
The Cavena water park is another very popular aqua park. It has a great diversity of fun water rides, large pools and relaxing areas. Even for those with strong nerves the rides Kamika, Twin peaks and Stukas Book would probably be at the limit. As the water park is located directly next to Movieland , a combined visit with half a day in each park is recommendable.
Getting to Cavena Aquapark:
Basically, the way of travelling to the park is the same as travelling to Gardaland ; read more about it here. Like in the case of Gardaland, there is also a free bus connection from the train station in Peschiera . In addition, there is also a bus collecting people at campsites in the area. Here you can see which campsites the bus stops at and the timetable.
Aquafollie is another popular water park near Venice . The park has water slides, games and fun areas for kids of all ages; for the adults there are relax areas with deckchairs and sunshade. Each day the park has Acquagym with instructors for the adults and a kids’ club with games and fun. Aquafollie which is located in the historic centre of Caorle is open from about 1 of June til Mid September. More details about the park you can find here .
Getting to Aquafollie:
- By car: the nearest highway is the E70 / A4 highway between Trieste and Torino. If you are coming from direction Trieste you should take the highway exit Latisana (35 km from Aquafollie). If you are coming from direction Torino / Venice , you should take exit S.Donà-Noventa (25 km from Aquafollie). From both exits follow signs towards Caorle.
- By train: the closest train station is either San Donà di Piave which is about 29 km away or the one in Portogruaro which is 28 km from Aquafollio. From both train stations there are local bus (ATVO) lines to Caorle.
- By bus: if you are travelling to Caorle by a long distance bus, you will have to change to a local / regional bus in Venice Mestre or Treviso . From both towns you have a bus connection to Caorle. More connections are available if you travel via San Donà di Piave.
- Aquafollie address: Viale Aldo Moro, 1, 30021 Caorle VE, Italia
AcquaPark Odissea 2000
If you are on holiday in the southern part of Italy, you should pay a visit to the Odissea water park which is one of the largest in Italy . The highlight of the park are the waterslides with names like Krono Kamikaze, Titano Roller, Skyron Rocket or Big Olimpo. For the smaller kids there are large pool areas with small slides and aqua fun. For those who like to relax there are calm water rivers and plenty of deckchairs and sunshades. Of course AcquaPark Odissea 2000 also has various animation programs and water gymnastics in the program.
Getting to AcquaPark Odissea 2000
As mentioned above, the Odiessea water park is located in the southern part of Italy. The park is not located in a city but next to a resort called Itaca Nausicaa . The nearest city is called Rossano Stazione which is about 11 km away. The nearest highway is the A3 (Napoli – Reggio Calabria); from the closest exit there is about 35 Km. Travelling to Odissea by train or bus is rather complicated and not recommended.
AcquaPark Odissea 2000 address: Contrada Zolfara, 87067 Villaggio Nausicaa, Rossano CS, Italia
Acquatica Park
Near Milan there are several water parks. The most popular is Acquatica Park which is located south-west of the town . The water park has slides in all categories, ranging from 2 meter slides in the baby lagoon to trill slides like e.g the Kamikaze. Acquatica aqua park also offers other activities like beach volley and various other, non water related games. The park operates from the beginning of June till the beginning of September. More info about the water park you can read here .
Getting to Acquatica Park:
Acquatica is located next to the the A50 / E 62 highway. The nearest exit is only a few km from the water park. From Milan there are public buses to the main road by the aqua park and if you travel by a long distance bus, you will have to travel to Milan main bus station and then change to a local bus from there on. Reach the park by train will also have to be via Milan train station.
Acquatica Park address: Via Gaetano Airaghi, 61, 20153 Milano MI, Italy
Other water parks to visit in Italy
On the map below you will find more than 40 aqua parks as well as amusement parks and Zoos which could be interesting to visit during a holiday in Italy. To find parks in a particular region of Italy you can zoom on the map and then click on the symbols which in most cases have a link to the website of the provider. Please note that many of the websites are only available in the Italian language.
If you should know about any aqua park, amusement park or Zoo which is not on the list, you are more than welcome to inform us about it in the comment field below and we will then update the map.

11 Best aquaparks in Italy
Spice up your day by visiting one of the best aquaparks in Italy. Slides, water slides, a wild river, kamikaze, or a wave pool – these are just some of the attractions that will ensure a day full of fun for you and your children. If water attractions are not enough for you, the water parks include playgrounds, animation programs, and exercises in the water – you just won’t be bored!
1. Aquafolie, Caorle
Aquafollie Water World is located in the northeastern part of Caorle, next to Pescatore Park. The water park was established in 1990 and has since expanded and modernized several times. Fisherman’s Bay, with its artificial waves and refreshing waterfalls, is very popular here. Children can have fun on the Baby Lagoon water playground, on the sandpit or compete in the mini club. There are aqua aerobics classes with experienced trainers, dance performances and a beach with parasols and sun loungers.
However, the greatest interest in aqua parks arouses water slides, and in Aquafollia it is no different. The offer includes a 30-meter Kamikaze slide, a rubber boat ride on the Crazy River slide and a closed Blu Tube toboggan. The complex is complemented by a trampoline corner, a mini-car track, a restaurant and facilities for picnics, a games area and a souvenir shop.

The biggest attractions of the Aquaparadise water world include the Stukas Boom free-fall water slide, the giant slide from the Kamika volcano, and the Water Jump slide with a unique impact on the water. Younger children will enjoy the bay with its white sandy beach and the swimming pool with a pirate sailboat. Aqueduct Park
The Aqueduct Park on the Appian Way the place that holds the imposing arches of the water pipes built by the ancient Romans that have made the Roman landscape unique . Six of the 11 aqueducts that supplied Rome flowed into this area between the neighbourhoods of Cinecittà and Quarto Miglio, which today can be visited on foot or by bicycle on one of the city's most spectacular green slopes, dominated by the crowns of maritime pines.
6 Roman aqueducts and one Renaissance aqueduct
Grand Tour travellers, Romantic painters, archaeologists, lovers of Roman ruins and civil engineering: they all appreciated and loved this strip of Roman countryside to the south-east of the city, which preserves the remains of six Roman aqueducts , as well as one Renaissance aqueduct, with their imposing geometric arches interrupted by the roundness of the canopies of maritime pines. The Aqueduct Park was included in the Appian Way Park in 1988 to protect a landscape of great historical and architectural value . We owe it to the initiative of a civic committee if today we can walk among such beauty, in an area rescued from degradation and for the purpose of constructing speculation.
Anio Vetus, the oldest
From 312 BC and for several centuries, Rome's springs were supplied with clean and safe water through the construction of imposing pipelines that brought into the city water drawn from the Latium mountains. The water of the Tiber was not adequate to respond to the needs of an increasingly populated city: hence the need to supply further afield, met thanks to these impressive hydraulic engineering works that characterised the history of the Roman Empire.
The remains of the aqueducts that flow into the area are those of Anio Vetus (underground, it is the oldest and has a length of 64 km), Aqua Marcia , Tepula , Julia, Claudio and Anio Novus , which partly overlap, and Felice, built by Pope Sixtus V between 1585 and 1590 to supply some Roman neighbourhoods that had run dry due to the decay of the older aqueducts during the Middle Ages; the latter is still used to irrigate the countryside. The water of the aqueducts mostly flowed underground, but when it had to cross a valley, the pipes had to be supported by masonry arches.
Picnics, drinking fountains and bicycles
The vast 240-hectare area of the Aqueducts Park is closed to traffic and criss-crossed by various paths that can be walked or cycled every day. In the area there are picnic areas (but barbecuing is prohibited), drinking fountains, a bicycle rental service (open on Sundays), as well as a few bars and restaurants.
The park can also be reached from the centre of Rome by metro, from Porta Furba stop, where there is an information point, and at the following stops, up to Cinecittà.
In Rome, do as the Romans do, who go there at sunset, when the grazing light illuminates the arches with a magical glow.

Italy, the birthplace of both the Roman Empire and the Renaissance, boasts an unsurprising abundance of art and architectural masterpieces. Experiences you should not miss in Italy
1. Explore the Amalfi Coast The Amalfi Coast is a dreamlike destination, boasting a breathtaking stretch of coastline spanning 50 km along the Mediterranean Sea, adorned with picturesque towns like Positano, Amalfi Town, Ravello, and Sorrento. With its high sea cliffs and beautiful beaches, it is undeniably one of the most stunning places to visit in Italy. This glamorous destination is lined with pastel villas, vibrant port towns, hiking trails, rocky shores, and luxurious islands. Don't miss the chance to walk the scenic Path of Gods and explore the enchanting beaches, islands, and coastline by boat. Indulge in wine tasting, and discover the region's signature lemon groves and delightful local products. With its proximity to Naples, a day trip to the ruins of Pompeii near the legendary Mt. Vesuvius is an added bonus that enhances the Amalfi Coast experience. Make the best of private Italian tours and explore Amalfi in the best possible way.
2. Enjoy a gondola ride in Venice For centuries, travelers have cherished the tradition of taking a gondola ride through the canals of Venice. The city's islands are interconnected by a maze of narrow passageways, and the canals serve as its main streets. The most prominent waterway is the Grand Canal, cutting a wide S-shaped path through Venice. Along its banks stand majestic palaces once owned by the wealthiest and most powerful families of the Venetian Republic. A Vaporetto ride along the Grand Canal offers an excellent opportunity to admire these grand palaces, as many face the water. While on your gondola ride and exploring on foot, make sure to venture into the smaller, more atmospheric canals. These charming waterways are lined by old buildings that have remained virtually unchanged for centuries, adding to the enchantment of the Venice experience.
3. Explore Cinque Terre Cinque Terre is a charming coastal region with steep hills and dramatic cliffs that overlook the Mediterranean. The region comprises five picturesque villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. These villages are connected by various means, including walking paths, a railroad that tunnels through the headlands, and a scenic narrow road high on the hillside above. Hiking between the villages is a highly popular activity, as it allows travelers to immerse themselves in the stunning landscape. Despite modern tourism, the small towns have preserved their old-world fishing village charm, providing a sense of remoteness and authenticity. Your Italy trip must have Cinque Terre on its list!
4. Try a pizza and gelato Indulging in pizza and gelato in Italy is an absolute must for any food enthusiast. Italy is renowned for its world-famous pizzas, featuring thin, crispy crusts topped with luscious tomato sauce, gooey mozzarella, and an array of delectable toppings. Each region offers unique pizza variations, reflecting local flavors and traditions. Complementing this savory delight is the iconic Italian gelato, a creamy, intensely flavored frozen treat. Savor the velvety textures and diverse flavors, from classic vanilla and chocolate to artisanal fruit creations. Both pizza and gelato exemplify the country's culinary prowess, providing an unforgettable taste of Italy's rich gastronomic heritage.
5. Discover Rome Undoubtedly, Rome stands as one of Italy's premier destinations, a city you simply cannot miss exploring. Its ancient allure is irresistible, with iconic sites like the Colosseum and Pantheon that will leave you in awe. Rome is adorned with a plethora of historical monuments, making it a treasure trove of ancient wonders. Among the must-see attractions are the famous Trevi Fountain, the majestic Colosseum, and the remarkable Pantheon. When visiting Italy, Rome should top your list, offering an unforgettable journey through the fascinating remnants of history.
Things to know before traveling to Italy

- Dress Code: Italians generally dress well, especially when visiting religious sites or dining in upscale restaurants. Modest attire is appreciated for visiting churches, and beachwear is best kept for the beach.
- Meal Times: Italians typically eat lunch between 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM and dinner after 7:30 PM. Many restaurants close between lunch and dinner hours, so plan accordingly.
- Tipping: Tipping is not mandatory in Italy, as a service charge is often included in the bill. However, leaving a small tip for exceptional service is appreciated. The Caroline Aqueduct
A work of vanvitellian engineering.
The Caroline Aqueduct is a hydraulic engineering work designed by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli. Its construction begun in 1753 and gave life to King Charles of Bourbon’s dream . Thanks to the aqueduct, the water reaches the Royal Park of the Royal Palace of Caserta at the height of the waterfall, and from there it descends to feed the complex system of pools and fountains after traveling for 38 kilometres. The aqueduct begins its journey at the foot of Mount Taburno, in Bucciano within the Airola area, where it draws from the sources of the Fizzo at an altitude of 243 meters above sea level. Its conduit continues mostly underground, signalled on the surface by 67 towers for control and venting. It takes 17 years to complete and a total sum of 622,424 ducats. In 1826 Antonio Sancio, administrator of the royal sites of San Leucio and Caserta, defined the project as “one of the most unique that exists in Europe”. The aqueduct is the element that has impressed foreign visitors the most since the eighteenth century.

Vanvitelli’s Research
Before the construction of the Caroline Aqueduct, Luigi Vanvitelli was engaged in researching the area for the quest of finding a source. The basin to draw from had to be able to allow not just the construction of the Royal Palace of Caserta, but a much bigger project. The architect found the necessary spring waters while on the trail of Aqua Iulia, the aqueduct that in Roman times supplied the ancient city of Capua. The choice falls on the land of the Duke of Airola, in the Taburno area, where Vanvitelli discovers a wealth of water such as to allow the beginning of the aqueduct’s works.
The Aqueduct Trail
Before reaching the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Caroline Aqueduct follows a long path that crosses the current provinces of Benevento and Caserta. The conduit passes through the municipalities of Bucciano, Airola, Moiano, S. Agata de ‘Goti, Durazzano, Valle di Maddaloni, Caserta. The aqueduct, which runs mostly underground, comes out into the open in some places via canal bridges. These include the Charles III Bridge located in Moiano, the bridge that crosses the Durazzano Valley and the most famous “Bridges of the Valley”, where the conduit crosses the Maddaloni Valley through a structure with three orders of arches, 60 meters high and about 500 meters long.
The Territory’s Supply
The far-sightedness of Charles of Bourbon’s project is evidenced by the fact that the Caroline Aqueduct supplied not only the Royal Palace of Caserta, but also other centres in the area. Before arriving at the Royal Park, a branch detached from the aqueduct to reach San Leucio, while another branch departed from the Dolphin Fountain and proceeded towards the Royal Site of Carditello, also serving the municipalities crossed along the way. In the original project, the Caroline Aqueduct also had to serve another purpose: to enhance the water supply of the city of Naples. For this reason the so-called “Tronco di San Benedetto” (San Benedetto’s log) was built, the aqueduct that took the water out of the fountains of the Royal Park and fed it into the seventeenth-century Carmignano Aqueduct, thus proceeding towards Naples.

Bellissima esperienza, bellissimi posti.
