Amboseli Budget Safari Tours

Kenya has some fantastic parks and Amboseli National Park is the favorite one of all for many travelers. It’s a compact park that’s easy to get to and get around, and it’s a place for memorable wildlife encounters, from lions and cheetahs to denning hyenas and up-close elephants. Looming over the park along its southern flank is Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain: it may lie across the border in Tanzania, but the best views of all are from Amboseli. The national park is also deep in the Maasai heartland, and the wider ecosystem includes many Maasai-run conservancies where you can encounter these true custodians of the land.

5 Questions About Amboseli Budget Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

amboseli budget safari

Which other parks and reserves should I visit on a budget Amboseli trip?

“You should dedicate as much time as you can to visiting and exploring Amboseli National Park. It’s a fantastic park for culture, wildlife and scenery, a combination that few other parks can match. I recommend a minimum of 2 days in the park but would suggest more if you can spare them. If you do have time to venture beyond Amboseli, the conservancies around the national park are worth exploring. However, they don’t have much in the way of budget accommodation. When you’re in Amboseli, you’re a half-day drive from both Nairobi National Park (to the northwest) and Tsavo West National Park (to the southeast). Both are world-class wildlife destinations. Closer at hand is Chyulu Hills National Park, the setting for Ernest Hemingway’s ‘Green Hills of Africa’, although the scenery is generally better than the wildlife viewing.”

What kind of vehicle can I expect on a budget safari to Amboseli?

“There are many different tours and packages available for an Amboseli budget safari, but in most cases, you’ll travel by road to the park. Flying is possible but expensive. The trip to Amboseli from Nairobi or Mombasa will take you along the crowded and chaotic Nairobi–Mombasa road, where you may experience heavy traffic. Your trip may be in a minibus or a 4WD vehicle. Once inside the park, your game drives will probably take place in a minibus. These workhorses of Kenyan safari trails should have a pop-top roof: you stand on the seats and can enjoy an elevated, uninterrupted view. On a budget safari, you’re likely to be sharing the vehicle with other (sometimes many) travelers. The 4WD safari vehicle (with open sides, a canvas roof and tiered seating) is also possible, although this is usually reserved for more expensive safari tours.”

What type of accommodation can I expect on cheap Amboseli packages?

“In most instances on a budget Amboseli safari, you’ll be camping. Where this is the case, you’ll likely sleep in simple two- or three-person tents with a ground mattress. Inside the park, there are a handful of basic public campsites. At these fenced sites you can expect a communal building with showers (hot water is unreliable) and toilets with separate sections for men and women. One of these campsites, close to Kimana Gate in the east, has a small bar and kitchen. Facilities may be basic, but often all you have to do to see Mt Kilimanjaro is stick your head out of your tent in the morning. Outside the park there are numerous affordable, privately run accommodation options. Most of these are camping areas with all the usual facilities (including a communal kitchen and dining area), plus views of Kilimanjaro as an added bonus. Some places have simple rooms (either in a lodge or a Maasai village context), usually with shared bathrooms.”

How do I avoid the crowds in Amboseli?

“Amboseli is a really popular park, and there are times when it is impossible to avoid the crowds. But you shouldn’t let that spoil your holiday. The busiest months are in high season, which runs from December to March and again from July to October. Visiting outside these months can be a good option, although April and May can be rainy, not to mention muddy for getting around. Be careful if you are traveling at this time: I once visited Amboseli at Easter and it was busier than ever, including sharing one cheetah sighting with 36 other vehicles (yes, I counted them, and no, I didn’t stick around). June and November can be good months for a slightly quieter safari experience. If you’re staying inside the park, the first hour or so can be lovely and quiet, before all the vehicles start arriving through the park gates.”

How much does an Amboseli budget safari cost?

“A cheap Amboseli budget safari can start at US$150 per person per day. A large proportion of this amount will go to your Amboseli National Park entry fees, which are a pricey US$60/35 per adult/child per day. Also included in this estimate should be all accommodation (such as camping fees and equipment), food, water, guide, driver, vehicle and, on most days, two game drives around the park. There are lots of different tours and packages, but one thing to remember is that for a really cheap safari, you may be expected to join in and help with camp tasks such as setting up camp and taking down the tents when it’s time to move on, as well as cooking and washing up. You may be able to keep costs down a little by traveling outside of the high-season months. However, budget prices are less variable by season than are more expensive safaris.”

Estonia

(we went in April) It was flooded a bit so the big cats were hiding. Lots of elephants in big herds. Lots of birds. The early morning walk was 10 USD extra, but we did not do it, as we wanted to enjoy the sunrise by ourselves.

Netherlands

It was big, we saw almost all the animals except the rhino (but the rhino doesn’t live in Amboseli) and no cats. But we went on safari on for 1,5day. But the experience was so cool and wonderful, we would definitely go again.

Italy

Amboseli is great, but you can not see all the animals you can find in Maasai Mara. It is iconic for the view of mount Kilimanjaro and the many elephants. It is also recommended for birdwatching and has wonderful landscapes.

Slovenia

Amboseli was quite hot and dusty. We saw Kilimanjaro, elephants (even the one with huge tusks), lions setting hunting formation. I was still amazed, but if I compare it to Masai Mara, I cannot give it the same rating.

A long-standing highlight of Kenya’s safari circuit, 392 km2 (151 square mile), Amboseli was set aside as a wildlife reserve in 1899 and made a national park in 1974.

Renowned for its high density of elephants, the park forms the unfenced core of an 8,000 km2 (3088 square mile) ecosystem that includes large tracts of Maasai community land both in Kenya and across the border in Tanzania.

Amboseli National Park lies at the northern base of Mount Kilimanjaro and, cloud permitting, offers tremendous opportunities to photograph plains wildlife below the snow-capped peak of Africa’s tallest mountain.

Highlights of Amboseli National Park

The 5,891m (19,327ft) summit of Kilimanjaro – the world’s tallest freestanding mountain and Africa’s highest peak – actually stands within Tanzania. Still, the finest views of it are to be had from Amboseli.

For much of the day, the volcanically-formed mountain is rendered invisible by a shroud of clouds, but this usually lifts at dusk and dawn to reveal the iconic snow-capped peak rising a total 5km (3,1mi) above the dusty plains in all its breathtaking glory.

Snow Caps on Mount Kilimanjaro

A dominating blue presence on maps of the park, the eponymous Lake Amboseli only holds water briefly in years of exceptional rainfall.

The rest of the time, this flat dry dust bowl supports large numbers of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, and various exotic birds. The exotic birds you can expect to include the Secretary bird, Yellow-necked spurfowl, and the localized Pangani longclaw.

The Secretary bird is a fearsome snake wrangler

Scattered stands of umbrella thorn woodland, dominated by the distinctive flat-topped Acacia tortilis, are home to giraffe, impala, and a host of striking dry-country birds, notably Von der Decken’s hornbill, red-and-yellow barbet, rosy-patched bushshrike, and steel-blue whydah.

The permanent Enkongo Narok and Olokenya Swamps, fed by underground streams that rise on the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro, are home to plentiful hippos and a wide range of aquatic birds, among them long-toed lapwing, painted snipe, great white pelican, and grey crowned-crane.

Another must-see landmark is Observation Hill, which offers panoramic views across a pretty lake towards Tanzania, with Kilimanjaro often visible at dusk and dawn.

Stunning views from observation hill in Kenya

Amboseli’s most famous and entertaining mammalian residents are the subjects of the Amboseli Elephant Research Project , founded in 1975 by Dr. Cynthia Moss and retains detailed records of most births, deaths, and relationships within an extended community of around 50 families, whose range centers on the national park.

As a result of this close monitoring, the elephants of Amboseli are unusually well-habituated and contain a high proportion of old tuskers – excellent sightings are all but guaranteed.

Elephants Amboseli | by blieusong

The core national park is surrounded by several private conservancies that comprise Maasai community land and offer exclusive traversing rights to one or two small camps or lodges.

The conservancies support several species seldom observed within the national park, for instance, Gerenuk and Lesser kudu, and the ability to head off-road allows guests to make the most of cheetah and lion sightings.

Practical Advice for an Amboseli Safari

  • Coming by road, Amboseli is 230km (143mi) from Nairobi via Namanga, a drive that includes some heavily corrugated sections and takes about five hours in either direction.
  • Road safaris in Kenya often combine Amboseli with Tsavo West National Park, which lies about 120km (75mi) away along a poor dirt road.
  • It is also possible to fly into Amboseli from the likes of Nairobi, Mombasa, and the Masai Mara.
  • Several safari lodges lie within the national park, and some excellent upmarket tented camps service the surrounding conservancies.

Itinerary for this Tour

Maasai by Dylan Walters

Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park - Kenya

At the start of this budget Kenya safari, you will be collected from your per-tour hotel in Nairobi at 07:30 am. Leaving the bustling city of Nairobi, we travel south to Amboseli National Park , located near the border with Tanzania. We arrive at our luxury tented camp inside Amboseli Park, in time for lunch.

After lunch at our first tented camp, we take an afternoon game drive in the beautiful Amboseli National Park . Then we have dinner and overnight at a comfortable eco-camp in Amboseli National Park (or similar accommodation).

Day 2: Amboseli National Park - Kenya

Today is set aside for a full day of game viewing in Amboseli National Park. We explore this scenic game reserve on morning and afternoon game drives and have the option of visiting a Maasai village (optional extra).

Amboseli National Park is one of the most popular game parks in Kenya. Amboseli Park covers sprawling grasslands and the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. Standing at 5896m above sea level the snow-topped mountain forms the backdrop to game viewing in Amboseli. Amboseli National Park hosts some of Kenya's largest elephant herds and is famous for its big elephant bulls with their impressive tusks. Amboseli is considered one of the top game parks in Africa to get up close to elephants in the wild, as well as offering some of the finest photographic opportunities of wildlife flanked by the scenic Mt Kilimanjaro.

The Game Park also contains huge populations of buffalos, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos, and various antelope species, such as impala. Amboseli National Park is also home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, and many other species of plains game. The park also boasts an abundance of birds, including bee-eaters, kingfishers, pelicans, African fish eagles, and falcons.

We return to the same camp in Amboseli, for a night under starry skies. Enjoy meals and another overnight stay at the private safari camp, with beautiful views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 3: Amboseli to Lake Nakuru National Park - Kenya

We leave Amboseli this morning travelling north, and back to Nairobi where we stop for lunch. After lunch, we travel to the Great Rift Valley passing through beautiful scenery as we drive. In the late afternoon, we arrive at Lake Nakuru Park in time for an evening game drive.

Lake Nakuru National Park was first established as a bird sanctuary before being declared a national park. Lake Nakuru hosts over 400 different bird species, including many water birds. Bird species include the Great White Pelican, African Spoonbill, Yellow-billed Stork, Lesser and Greater Flamingo, and Long-crested Eagle. The Lake Nakuru National Park is known as an important wildlife sanctuary for some of Africa's endangered species, especially black and white rhinos, and Rothschild's giraffes. The game reserve is also home to lions, waterbuck, buffalo, and baboons, which we keep an eye out for on our game drive.

We have dinner and relax at the lodge in Lake Nakuru National Park.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara - Kenya

Day four of the Amboseli, Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara Safari starts with breakfast at the lodge. Then it's back on the road, as we make our way to our next game-viewing destination in Kenya, the world-famous Masai Mara Game Reserve .

We arrive at our tented camp near Masai Mara and have lunch, before embarking on a thrilling afternoon game drive in one of the finest wildlife havens on earth.

Then it's time for dinner at the safari camp, located on the banks of a river inside a private Masai Mara conservancy. Retire to your spacious tented room and fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush.

Day 5: Masai Mara National Reserve - Kenya

We spend the whole of the next day game viewing in Kenya's top game park - the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Our morning and afternoon game drives take us in search of Africa's Big Five and the plethora of other wildlife inhabiting this vast Kenyan game reserve. On clear days, the Mara offers fantastic orange-tinged sunsets well worth capturing on camera. The Mara reserve is 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers in Kenya. One glimpse is enough to explain its appeal; it is a typical open savannah, with a mass of amazing wildlife.

Wherever you go in the vast Masai Mara you will see plenty of wildlife, such as Masai giraffes, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyenas, topi, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and hippos are also found in great numbers. It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but reasonably common.

The ultimate action here is, without doubt, the annual wildebeest exodus, the Great Migration , in July and August when millions of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.

Hot-air balloon trips are an entirely outstanding way of seeing the savannah plains teeming with wildlife. These Masai Mara balloon trips can be arranged at extra cost.

We overnight at the same luxury tented camp in a lovely wild setting near Masai Mara tonight.

Day 6: Masai Mara to Nairobi - Kenya

Start day six of our budget Kenya safari with breakfast at the tented camp in the private Masai Mara Conservancy. Then it is time to say goodbye to the African bush and drive back to Nairobi.

This unforgettable Amboseli, Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara Safari ends upon arrival back in Nairobi at about 15:00.

  • Meals included: Breakfast

We stay at a comfortable lodge with lush gardens inside Lake Nakuru National Park. Facilities include two bars, a restaurant and a large swimming pool. Accommodation is in en-suite rooms with views of the lake, national park, and leafy gardens.

Masai Mara Safari Accommodation

Accommodation is at a luxury tented camp located along the Oloirigynyisho River in a private 30-acre conservancy, near the Masai Mara National Reserve.

The camp offers views of the Oloolotikoshi Hills from its location on the riverbanks - an area where various wild animals are regularly spotted. The closest entrance to Masai Mara is the Ololaimutia gate, only 2.5 km from the camp. This intimate camp features 8 spacious permanent tents which have been tastefully decorated and fitted with beds, linen, and mosquito nets. The tents have en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets, washbasins, and hot showers. Each tent has its own veranda where guests can sit back and watch the bush.

Facilities include bar and lounge areas, a shop selling locally-made products, and an airy restaurant designed like a traditional African hut.

Kenya Safari Transport

This safari will be conducted in a custom-made 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for game viewing. The 4x4 Land Cruisers are adapted for game viewing and fitted with refrigerators to keep your drinks cold out in the bush.

The maximum group size on this Kenya Safari is six people, to guarantee each person a window seat on game drives.

Wildebeest Great Migration Explained

Please note that the Wildebeest Great Migration is seasonal. As a natural wildlife phenomenon, it is fluid and unpredictable. For this reason, seeing the Great Migration cannot be guaranteed.

The wildebeest and other wild herbivores migrate between Masai Mara in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania. These herds move in a massive circular route covering some 1200 miles (1931km). It is a continuous movement of wildlife that can be seen in different areas at different times of the year. During certain phases of this annual trek, the animals disperse or slow down, whilst at other times the migration picks up speed, with the herds becoming larger and denser. Not only does the Wildebeest Great Migration vary from place to place and season to season but the movement of these large wildlife herds varies from year to year.

Please talk to a travel expert from African Budget Safaris about seeing the Wildebeest Great Migration on your safari to find out more. Also, check out our detailed article about the Great Migration in Serengeti and Masai Mara .

Amboseli National Park Camping

Amboseli national park camping is one of the unique safari package that gives you the best and true African wilderness experience. Most travellers use to misquote that camping safaris are for budget guests but its not true we have executive safari tents some permanent while others are mobile. There are also basic tents for budget guests or students. The tents are pitched in the middle of the wilderness and you feel the voice and calls of nature while on your tent. Camping safaris are the best nature friendly trips that doesnot affect nature very much. Come feel the king of the jungle when it roars at night near your tent or the Elephants stamp their feet near your tent. You have the game viewing experience at the comfort of your balcony at the tent. This is one of the advantages of Amboseli national park camping. The other they are budget friendly hence making you enjoy luxury safari experience at the most affordable rates.

Amboseli national park has designated public camping areas that the travellers can even use their own tents and sleeping bags. All the public camping areas are guarded by the game rangers who are armed and well trained on how to handle wildlife.

We do organise group and individual Amboseli national park camping safaris that depart daily from Nairobi. We have our own tents however we do accept the guests to bring their own tents if they have. We move with our chef during this safari who prepares meals for the travellers. Incase you wish to prepare your own food we also allow with great ample space for you to do that. The public camping areas are mostly used by backpackers, trackers and students. They have all clean toilet and bathroom facilities which are public. The public camping sites are all managed by Kenya Wildlife Services. They are located in different areas of the park though the most common is the one near the park headquarters. This camping site has a capacity of 60 pax at a time.

Amboseli national park camping is associated with born fire in the evenings. You will enjoy the cold drink under the diamond sky. Clear skies with shining stars makes you enjoy the wilderness as the locals entertain you. Its only in camping safaris that you enjoy such a luxury wildlife experience. Amboseli national park camping are in different locations as well as different sizes. This variations of the camps gives you a variation in the prices.

Donot think Amboseli national park camping is only basic (budget), it has also luxury and mid-range tents. There are several tented camps around the park like Amboseli Tortils Camps, Amboseli Porini camp, Amboseli Kibo safari camp and many more. They are permanent luxury tents that have modern facilities like swimming pools, bar, luxury tented rooms, clean private bathrooms and showers that have both cold and hot water. These camps have modern tents that are built with nature friendly local materials. Most of this camps are located in animal movement zones. Some tents are mobile tents that follow the changes of Amboseli national park climate. There are some areas that are not easily accessed during the rainy season hence the camps in that areas are closed or shifted to some are for only few months of the rainy season.

Are you worried the budget for the safari to Amboseli, our team has developed more safari options that can fit any class of a traveller. Donot kill your travelling dream because of the money contact us we we advise you accordingly.

Amboseli National Park Camping

Best time to do Amboseli camping

Its important to know the Climate of Amboseli before you book for your camping safaris to this park. This will guide you much to know the best time to do camping at the park. With our experience, Amboseli national park camping is best done during the long dry season that starts from June to October then later from December to February. Its not good to do camping safaris during the rainy season due to the heavy rains found at the park. The rains sometimes are accompanied by the heavy winds which can easily blow off the tent if not well set. Always follow the guidelines of the driver guide or ranger when doing Amboseli national park camping. They guide on the safety measures with the rules and regulations that must be followed when doing camping in the park.

Enjoy the best of your African safari with Amboseli national park camping. You will not only save money but enjoy luxury wildlife experience.

amboseli budget safari

Here is our itinerary:

6th - Arrive in JRO at 7:30 am and have guide pick us up and drive straight to Tarangire for 2 nights at Tarangire Baobab Tented Camp or Tortilis Camp.

7th - Tarangire

8th - Drive to Ngorongoro Crater for 1 night at Oldeani Mountain Lodge or Tortilis Camp

9th - Drive or Fly? to Central Serengeti for 2 nights at Mawe Tented Camp or Tortilis Camp

10th - Central Serengeti

11th - Drive or Fly? to Northern Serengeti for 3 nights at Gnu Mara River Camp or Nyikani Migration Kogatende Camp

12th - Northern Serengeti

13th - Northern Serengeti

14th - Fly to Masai Mara, Kenya and stay in Naboisho Conservancy for 2 nights at Basecamp Wilderness or Encounter Mara Camp

15th - Mara

16th & 17th - Had planned to Fly to Amboseli, but now considering flying to Ol Pajeta Conservancy? We wanted to see Kili in Amboseli, but heard it is not as likely (and less accommodations that are available) and so we'd love to see Rhinos at Ol Pajeta for final park visit. This is our last big decision. The other alternative is to use the 2 days and add it to Mara and one other location, or Arusha in beginning.

18th - Fly to Nairobi for final night

19th - Nairobi sights until flight in evening

So, I'd love to get inputs on where the best spot would be for our last park - Amboseli or Ol Pajeta?

Inputs on these accommodations - good or bad?

Inputs on where we definitely need to fly and where we can drive. We are open to either.

Input on rest of itinerary as far as seeing the migration (I doubt it will be in Kenya in mid July, so I hope it will be in Northern Serengeti.

Last we are late in planning and will we be able to get necessary Visas in Tanzania and Kenya airports for each country?

Any suggestions for ending tour in Nairobi and some local great food for last dinner and lunch there?

Last, is anyone familiar with the Kenya TO Aardwolf Africa Sarai Adventures. They are registered in Kenya and have been great to work with so far and competitively priced. They just don't have many reviews, but the ones they have are great. I'd like to use them, but am just a little uneasy since they don't have lots of reviews.

Thanks so everyone. We are just anxious to get these last details resolved and finally booked.

I can understand your dilemma; a broken arm is really messing with my safari schedule.

On your routing-

I think from a cost basis it makes sense to do the 6th-14th as a classic overland trip utilizing a single guide and vehicle. While there is a lot of driving, a lot of that time will also be game viewing. For example, going from the central Serengeti to the northern Serengeti.

How to spend those last 2 days- I like Amboseli; it’s a GOOD safari location. The problem is that you are going to spend the previous 9 days at GREAT safari destinations. I’ve been lucky enough to see Kili; it was nice but not earth-shattering.

I haven’t been to Ol Pejeta or Laikipia so can’t judge them. A lot of folks really enjoy their time there and the activities available.

I like to have a buffer day at the beginning of the trip. Traveling from the states to East Africa is tough; I need the rest-day to get acclimated. I don’t think it makes sense to spend my first expensive safari day jet-lagged. Others are fine rolling right into safari. I think it matters if you can sleep on the plane .

I say if the activities at Ol Pejeta really interest you go there otherwise use one or 2 of those days in the Serengeti or Mara.

I’ll chime in on your Ol Pejeta vs. Amboseli question because I think Visually has handled the rest wonderfully, and I agree with all of it (especially more time in Naboisho, I don’t think you’d regret that!)

I’ve been to both Amboseli and Ol Pejeta. Amboseli is outstanding for elephants. I haven’t had as good elephant sightings since I went there. However, what Visually says about Amboseli possibly being a letdown following other very very productive locations is very accurate. I was just in Ol Pejeta in January and loved it. I had been there on my first Kenyan safari several years ago and forgot how good it really is. I had strong sightings of the big 5 (yes even leopard!) and the rhino sightings were spectacular. A very very memorable trip. Add in the excursion to “meet” the last two northern white rhinos on the planet, and you have a great stop for those two days. I highly recommend Kicheche Laikipia in Ol Pejeta if they have availability. Great camp, great staff and a wonderful watering hole right at the common area with nonstop wildlife.

I don't think we need a day in Arusha at the beginning since we are stopping for 2 days in Paris when we get there for a little break in the flight schedule. So, I think we'll be fine to start the safari the first day - especially since we get in very early and will have some down time after lunch at Tarangire before the afternoon game drive. Of course, now I wish we had just one two more days for the safari, but our flights are already booked and I'm sure this is a common problem and I'm pretty happy with the time we have.

If all you want to see is rhinos, head back to Nairobi for that last day and do a couple of game drives in Nairobi National Park (which I love). NNP has a very healthy population of both black and white rhinos and guides who are there all the time know how to find them easily. If your budget allows, the Emakoko is a lovely place to decompress before you head home (and get those game drives in!)
