Dedicated to ‘La Madonuccia’, or Little Madonna, the city’s patron saint who is believed to have spared the town from the plague, the cathedral is famous for Napoleon Bonaparte’s marble baptismal font, where he was baptized in 1771.

Place d’Austerlitz is the place where, according to the legend, Napoleon liked to play as a child. Grotte Napoleon refers to the large sheltered rocks behind the square where he used to play and dream of conquest and glory, fascinated by the great characters of history.

Nowadays, the square is dominated by another impressive statue of Napoleon standing on a white granite pyramid, erected in 1938. The monument is known as Monument commémoratif de Napoléon 1er , or Le Casone , and depicts Napoleon in a military uniform he wore in the Battle of Austerlitz. This monument is located around 1.5 km/0.9 miles (a 20-minute walk) from Ajaccio port.

Note : There is also a cultural and interpretation center “La Grotte Napoleon” located on 4 Rue Saint-Charles in Ajaccio downtown. The islands are home to colonies of seabirds out of which more than 150 species inhabit Mezu Mare , the main island known for a scenic 19th-century lighthouse (Phare des îles Sanguinaires).

While there, you can admire the most spectacular views of the Corsican coastline and the Mediterranean Sea from a couple of viewpoints, including Pointe de la Parata where you can visit Tour de la Parata ( La tour génoise de la Parata), a Genoese tower dating from the 16th century.

Translated into English, Îles Sanguinaires means “The Bloody Islands” due to their rich and mysterious past, so a good way to visit this place would be on a guided tour. Boat tours from Ajaccio are also a popular way of visiting this incredible place.

Sightseeing:

The capital of Corsica, Ajaccio lies in a calm bay on the west coast of Corsica, set against a backdrop of wooded hills. It is a relaxed rather than lively town and visitors come here to enjoy its wealth of cafes, restaurants and shops. The sights here mainly revolve around Napoleon, who was born here. The town's main sights are the magnificent cathedral where Napoleon was christened, the Bonaparte residence and numerous statues and street names related to his family.

The peninsula carries the citadel and terminates in the Citadel jetty. To the southwest of this peninsula lies the Place Bonaparte, a quarter frequented chiefly by winter visitors attracted by the mild climate of the town. Apart from one or two fine thoroughfares converging on the Place Bonaparte, the streets are mean and narrow and the town has a deserted appearance.

The house in which Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769 is preserved, and his associations with the town are everywhere emphasized by street-names and statues.

the Musée Fesch , which contains the art collection of Napoleon's maternal uncle, Cardinal Fesch. The collection of Italian paintings is considered to rate second only to that of the Louvre

Walking Distance To Old Town: 5 minutes

Amenities : Telephones, Taxi Stand, Motor Scooter Rental

Tender Port: no

Ajaccio cruise port is located right in the city center, so it’s easy to walk around and explore. From the cruise port, you can visit the old town, check out the markets, and enjoy the local food.

The beaches are also nearby if you want to relax by the sea. Closest to Ajaccio cruise port, you can find Plage de Saint-François, a sandy beach right in the heart of the city. It is pretty and has awesome views.

Plage du Trottel is another popular spot near the cruise port. It is known for its beautiful sunsets and cute cafes and restaurants.

Since the island is pretty small, you can either do a sightseeing tour of Corsica or spend the cruise day on the beach.

Most boat tours to the islands nearby do not start in Ajaccio, so they can be hard to reach. For that reason, I do not recommend it.

My tip for your shore day in Ajaccio: Take the PETIT TRAIN D’AJACCIO. This scenic train will take you through the best stops on the island. They offer two different routes, between 45 minutes and 01 hour 45 minutes. Tickets are around EUR 10,00 – amazing!

Things To See in One Day in Corsica (Ajaccio)

If you are planning on spending your day in Ajaccio, you have a couple of options of what to do. You can explore Maison Bonaparte, which is Napoleon’s birthplace turned into a museum.

The Fesch Museum is another great spot, showcasing a collection of Italian paintings.

The Ajaccio Cathedral is a beautiful church where Napoleon was baptized. You can also hang out in Place Foch . It is my favorite place on the island, a lively square with a market and cafes. You can also see a statue of Napoleon there.

A grand monument featuring a bronze statue of a mounted figure flanked by statues and palm trees, under a clear blue sky. Beautiful Ajaccio monument you should definitely visit when one day in corsica

The Calvi Citadel in Corsica is an old fortress with a lot of history. It was one of my highlights of this trip, so I definitely suggest visiting!

Built in the 13th century, it’s on a high spot overlooking the sea (to spot intruders of course). Now, it’s a cool place to explore, with narrow streets, old buildings turned into cafes, and awesome views of the harbor.

People say Christopher Columbus might have been born here, but no one knows if that is true. Nowadays they hold events like music and art shows.

A historic clifftop town with old buildings and a church, overlooking the deep blue sea, under a partly cloudy sky.

The Scandola Nature Reserve was a spot we sadly missed out on because it is hard to reach (only with boat). If you can somehow make it work with your departure times, I do suggest you visit it.

Scandola Nature Reserve in Corsica is a stunning, protected area that is kept untouched. It’s famous for its amazing volcanic rocks, clear blue waters and animals.

The place is part of UNESCO’s protected sites. You can take a boat tour and even go snorkeling there. It is extremely breathtaking for sure – a must-visit on your shore day in Corsica.

Rugged, reddish rock formations rising from a deep blue sea, with a boat visible in the distance emphasizing the grand scale.

One of the stops I loved the most on my day tour through Corsica was on the beach. The water is amazing for swimming and snorkeling.

You’ve got Palombaggia, a super pretty beach with white sand and blue water. Then there’s Saleccia, which is quiet and beautiful, but I found it a bit hard to get to.

Rondinara is shaped like a half-moon and is great for families. Also Santa Giulia is perfect for kids and water sports because the water is shallow and calm.

There is a beautiful beach for everyone in Corsica – make sure to include that in your trip.

A coastal view showing a stone ruin in the foreground, with a calm sea, rocky shore, and a town in the background, all under a blue sky. Stunning beaches in Corsica should definitely be on your visits itinerary

Bonifacio is a stunning town at the southern tip of Corsica, sitting high on white cliffs above the sea. It was my favorite spot in Corsica.

You can see old buildings that look like they’re hanging right over the edge. Walking around, you’ll see lots of history everywhre.

The town has a cute little marina where you can chill, eat, and watch boats. There are also boat trips to see cool sea caves. A famous spot is the Escalier du Roi d’Aragon, a steep set of steps cut into the cliff. Keep the departure time of your ship in mind when booking boat trips!

A coastal town perched atop sheer cliffs with fortified walls, overlooking a serene blue sea under a clear sky.

Another beautiful spot I loved is Cap Corse. It’s got wild nature, old villages, and secret beaches.

Driving around, you see mountains on one side and the sea on the other. It’s quieter here than other parts of Corsica, so it feels special and untouched.

You can find towers along the coast and try local wines that are really good. I did not know that Corsica was one of France’s major wine regions before visiting for sure.

There are also paths for walking, which I found so cool. It’s a perfect spot for anyone who loves exploring and wants to travel a bit off the beaten tracks of Ajaccio.

An aerial view of a coastal village with scattered buildings, green vegetation, and a blue sea, with a rocky islet close to the shore.

Sartene is a cool town in Corsica, sitting up high with amazing views all around. People say it’s the most “Corsican” town – and I agree.

The buildings are old and the streets are narrow and made of cobblestones – super cute and picturesque.

The town is known for its strong traditions. They have a famous Easter procession that’s very moving.

Insider Tip: Around Sartene, there are vineyards where you can taste local wine, I suggest combining the visit with a tasting if you have the time.

An old hilltop town with stone buildings and a church, surrounded by lush greenery and mountains in the backdrop, under a partly cloudy sky.

The Ospedale Forest is a cool, green place up in the mountains near Porto-Vecchio. My husband and I are big into hiking, so we loved this place.

It’s a big change from the sunny beaches because it’s cooler and full of tall pine trees (amazing to cool down on a hot summer day).

There are trails that go through the forest, leading to beautiful views of the mountains and the sea far away. One special spot is a lake that’s really pretty and a good place for a picnic. Bring some local wine and snacks and hang out there for a bit.

A forested area with a dry lake bed filled with tree stumps, surrounded by a dense pine forest under an overcast sky. A great spot to visit in Corsica in one day

One of the most visited spots in Corsica is the Napoleon Monument. Our train journey took us there first thing, and it was pretty impressive.

This statue is a way for people on the island to remember him and show how proud they are of him. It’s in an important spot in the city and shows Napoleon looking very noble.

People go there to learn about history and see how much Napoleon means to Corsica – it is their most famous citizen after all.

A stone monument to Napoleon Bonaparte, with a statue standing atop a series of steps, flanked by sculptures of eagles and inscriptions, with trees and a cloudy sky in the background. Totally worth visiting in one day in Corsica.

One of the things I try to do on every shore day is trying some local products. And Corsica has some awesome wine ready to taste on your day on the island.

he island’s vineyards benefit from the sunny weather, varied terrain, and the fresh, Mediterranean breeze, creating the perfect conditions for wine-making.

When you go wine tasting here, you’ll find a mix of red, white, and rosé wines, each with its own character. Famous local grape varieties are Niellucciu, Sciacarellu, and Vermentinu.

If you are wondering whether or not to pick a cruise with Corsica on the itinerary, I have the answer. It is definitely a big, fat, YES!

My expectations were to too high before going, because I knew nothing about the place. But turns out, their landscape is pretty amazing.

I would have loved to see the Scandola Nature Reserve, but our shore day was just not long enough. However, the richness of history and beauty on the island blew me away.

Turns out, Corsica was one of my favorite stops on this Mediterranean Cruise on the MSC Fantasia. And especially the wine was fantastic!

A sandy beach with an ancient round stone tower on the left, under a bright sun with a clear blue sky and mountains in the distance.

The most beautiful part of Corsica is hard to pin down, but many are captivated by the Calanches de Piana. These stunning rock formations and their dramatic landscapes, where nature paints every sunset uniquely, stand out. Overlooking the sea, the Calanches offer breathtaking views that blend the wild beauty of Corsica with the serene Mediterranean, creating a truly unforgettable sight.

Absolutely, you can spend one day in Corsica and still get a taste of its magic! It’ll be a bit of a whirlwind, but focusing on a specific area can give you a memorable slice of island life. Pick a spot like the vibrant streets of Ajaccio with its markets and beaches, or the breathtaking views from the Calanches de Piana. Dive into local cuisine with a seaside lunch, and if time allows, catch a quick dip in the Mediterranean or a short hike for panoramic views. While one day only scratches the surface, it’ll leave you dreaming of a longer return trip.

From Ajaccio’s cruise port, you can wander the historic old town, visit Napoleon’s birthplace, and taste local flavors at the market. Nearby beaches offer quick relaxation, while the Fesch Museum showcases art. Consider a scenic boat tour along the coast or indulge in Corsican cuisine at a waterfront restaurant. Even with just a day, you’ll capture the essence of Corsica’s vibrant culture and stunning landscapes.

Yes, you can easily walk from Ajaccio’s cruise port to the town center. The distance is quite short, making it a convenient and pleasant stroll. Along the way, you’ll pass by beautiful sights, including the marina, local shops, and cafes. The town is easy to reach and the walk is nice. From there, you can take the small scenic train around the island.

One Day in Mykonos From Cruise Ship: The Perfect Itinerary

Solent Richard's Cruise Blog

Welcome aboard and nice to meet you. My wife and I are seasoned cruisers having first dipped our toes into the world of cruising in 1990, a one week cruise on board the Cunard Countess. The majority of our cruising has been with two cruise lines, Cunard and P&O. We have, however, sailed on 21 different cruise ships, some many times over, on 11 different cruise lines while completing 619 cruise nights on board.

One Way to do Ajaccio

Ajaccio   is located on the west coast of the island of Corsica. It is a French town and capital of the island. Its most famous son was Napoleon Bonaparte and visitors to Ajaccio will not escape his lasting legacy.

The real joy of Ajaccio for passengers of visiting cruise ships is the close proximity of the town centre to the cruise ship berth…

ajaccio cruise port beach

Our arrival in Ajaccio on board the P&O cruise ship Ventura was the first visit that my wife and I had made to Ajaccio and, as with most of our visits we had done some research on just exactly what there was to see and do.

We planned a kind of ‘Do-it-Yourself’ visit as it certainly appeared to be a compact township. Our plan was to follow a route (marked in red) taking in the Place Foch, the Citadel, St. Francois’s beach and La Place d’Austerlitz: where probably the best of Ajaccio’s Napoleon statues is sited.

ajaccio cruise port beach

We headed for Place Foch , an attractive city square  at the center of the old town behind Hôtel de Ville which, to our delight,  is the idyllic setting for the excellent French farmers market…

ajaccio cruise port beach

Ajaccio’s  market  is busy, colorful, aromatic, and stacked with all kinds of local foodstuffs such as plum and myrtle liqueur, ewes’ cheese, rich honey comb and wild-pig sausages…

ajaccio cruise port beach

Corsica is renowned for its pungent shrubbery, called maquis, which is full of herbs like rosemary, sage, mint and thyme, and berries like juniper, bilberry and eucalyptus. So it’s no wonder that the local food is so tasty and of such variety…

ajaccio cruise port beach

Place Foch is the hub of Ajaccio; it is about  200 metres left as you leave the cruise pier and just 10 minutes walk on a flat surface.

At the head of Place Foch is an impressive marble statue of Napoleon…

ajaccio cruise port beach

…atop a fountain of four lions. This is the first of the Napoleon statues the visitor is likely to encounter…

ajaccio cruise port beach

Worth noting at this stage is that from Place Foch visitors can board ‘Le Petit Train’ , Ajaccio’s equivalent of the HoHo bus tour…

ajaccio cruise port beach

Another short walk from Place Foch is the  Ajaccio Cathedral , officially the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Ajaccio. It was in this Cathedral that Bonaparte was baptised: indeed, on entry one can still see the marble font where it happened…

ajaccio cruise port beach

The Cathedral is adjacent the  Place du Général-De-Gaulle.

A rather large square, with good views over the Gulf of Ajaccio, it often hosts concerts and exhibitions while, i n one corner can be found the second of our Bonaparte statues…

From the  Place du Général-De-Gaulle we dropped down to the promenade that runs along the length of St. Francois beach…

…before cutting up left at the now quite sad looking Le Cyrnos Palace Hotel. ..

It has certainly  seen better days…

The  Le Cyrnos Palace Hotel stands on the Cours du Général Leclerc, the road that leads directly to   La Place d’Austerlitz …

…at the far end of which is the third of the Bonaparte statues on our visit…

ajaccio cruise port beach

On our arrival at La Place d’Austerlitz there were many visiting sightseers. However, we initially settled for a coffee at one of the entrance cafes and within 30 minutes had the place to ourselves, so as to speak.

ajaccio cruise port beach

Solent Richard could not resist a little piece of fun, imitating the ‘little man’, for future use…

ajaccio cruise port beach

(are you reading this Tomvet)

Retracing our steps to the promenade with the intention of looking at the Citadel, we were blessed with good timing in being able to capture the arrival of the sail cruise ship, Club Med 2 …

ajaccio cruise port beach

…b efore circumnavigating the Citadel…

ajaccio cruise port beach

…and heading out along the breakwater for a view of the ship and its proximity to the waterfront of Ajaccio…

ajaccio cruise port beach

For us there were just two more sites that rank amongst the ‘must do’ for the visitor to Ajaccio. Again both were in easy walking distance though one, The Musee Fesch, was in a different direction – the opposite side of the ship.

So we headed back in the direction of the Place Foch and along the aptly named Rue Bonaparte and left into the Rue Saint-Charles where  La maison Bonaparte,     the ancestral home of the Bonaparte family is located. The house was almost continuously owned by members of the family from 1682 to 1923….

ajaccio cruise port beach

Maison Bonaparte was ranked as  “Monument Historique” in 1967  for both historical and aesthetic reasons. This house-museum, dating back the seventeenth century, was the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte and has a history as exciting as touching of the early years of Bonaparte’s life.

Admittance is €7.00 though there is a concession for seniors…

ajaccio cruise port beach

Our final visit in Ajaccio was to the  Musée Fesch. It is  the central museum of fine arts in Ajaccio and  is located in the town’s Borgu d’Ajaccio quarter, in Palais Fesch , approximately 15-20 minutes from La Mason Bonaparte and even less if visited directly  from the ship’s berth…

ajaccio cruise port beach

As luck would have it the Palais Fesch was closed on the day of our visit…

ajaccio cruise port beach

That concludes this review of a visit to Ajaccio. Our visit was made in May when the the touristy season was just picking up. Ajaccio was busy then so I would guess it gets busier. One thing noticeable was the multitude of excursions on offer, most by boat, around the harbour side…

ajaccio cruise port beach

It’s certainly hard to escape that chap Bonaparte around the town of Ajaccio…

ajaccio cruise port beach

You know what they say, if you can’t beat them, join them…

ajaccio cruise port beach

In all seriousness though, Ajaccio is  a really interesting port visit that should suit all varieties of cruise passengers.

Virgin Voyages' guide to Ajaccio, France

Filled with slopes and centuries worth of history, Ajaccio also boasts art (crafted both by nature or in the baroque period).

AJACCIO, Corsica

The magnetism of the Mediterranean

As a French commune only seven miles from the Italian island of Sardinia, Corsica is a blend of French and Italian culture. The locals feel more Italian than French but enjoy francophile staples like boulangeries and charcuterie . The capital port city, Ajaccio, sits on the western side of a natural paradise with astonishing peaks and sprawling beaches.

Ajaccio’s small streets are steeped in Napoleonic history including Maison Bonaparte, the infamous commander’s ancestral home. Tucked away in the mountainous countryside you’ll find vineyards, endless hiking trails and wild boar (see charcuterie ). The Ajaccio Market displays fresh honey, organic wine and aromatherapy oils harvested from the hills. Ajaccio is a gateway to the beaches along Corsica’s shores and the forests, canyons and coves hidden in the Mediterranean mountains.
