cruise control not working

I have a 1998 honda accord ex 5 speed. The switch on left side of dash does not come on when depressed

Is this a good question?

Just to further clarify, how many miles do you have on the vehicle? Did this just start to come up and when was the last time your CC did work? any other problems with the Accord?

Possibly Airbag-Recall Related: Were you part of the airbag recall, and had your airbag replaced? You might want to call up the shop that replaced your airbag. I had a other symptoms in addition to the cc working sporadically (including brake indicator light coming on sporadically, dash lights didn't turn on when I turned on headlights, and the right front headlight working sporadically). My electrician/mechanic recommended calling up the shop that replaced the airbag, explain the symptoms, and have them evaluate the airbag and evaluate the wiring. Don't trust the shop? You might want to consider spending $100 to $200 to have your independent mechanic take a look at it first, take pictures, and THEN have the recall shop do the evaluation. If they messed up the wiring, didn't isolate it, loosely put the wires in, etc, then they are going to be looking at some serious costs if they shorted out the system - especially once you start hearing jargon like "Not our fault, it's a notoriously bad multiplexer!".

I have an 2002 Accord SE. I cannot stress this enough. After you check your fuses and they are good, then then the next thing to look at on accords is the brake pedal switch. Even if your brake lights work, start here. I spent 3 days digging through possible causes. I check every sensor, twice, they were all good. I checked the 14p cable and everything tested good. I tested the airbag clock spring or reel, whatever you want to call it. I tested both the switches and they were good, everyone posting about the main switch not lighting up should know more than likely the bulbs are blown in the switch. I spent most of my time trying to get the main switch to work under the idea that it was working when it lit up. Not knowing the two bulbs inside were bad. The airbag was replaced under recall and the day Honda replaced it is the day the cruise stopped working. When I took the panel off to test the wires i saw they were taped with electrical tape. So i thought Honda had broke it. They tested the airbag reel and said it was not them. So, once again i was at a loss. I never thought to really check the brake switch. My brake lights worked fine and I had made sure it was making good contact with the pedal. Out of other options I went back to the switch and looked at it very closely. I noticed it was only pushed in about 99.9% of the way. That .01% will not effect the brake lights or come up when testing the 14p cable on the cruise module. So, after testing every switch, sensor, cable, fuse, relay, and everything else, all it took was a 16th of a turn on the brake pedal switch.

Thanks for this tip...just spent as much time going through and testing everything else and the brake pedal switch still worked (lights came on) but after tightening and fiddling with it, the cruise now works.

BTW...mine is a 2003 Accord EX four-cylinder with manual transmission. Wasn't the clutch safety switch or the cruise control module itself and the throttle body connection remains intact.

I concur with martygilbert2001's solution on this. I used this method on 2 accords and it worked to re-enable the cruise control. The switch has a button/plunger that, if not pushed in completely, will disable the cruise control. It seems that the brake lights have more tolerance, and work properly even if the button is not depressed fully. The cruise is a lot more fussy. So, if you disconnect the switch wiring harness, loosen the nut to allow the switch to turn, then turn the switch until the button is fully depressed, then re-tighten the nut and reconnect the harness, you may find that the issue is resolved. As I mentioned above, it worked for me on 2 different accords. Good find, martygilbert2001!

This is awesome. I got in my car and thought it was weird a “blue crayon top” had some how got in my floor board. On the ride back from work my cruise control didn’t work which led me to this thread. Now I know that was a crayon but the tip of my brake switch. Thanks for the help.

@Jordan Medeiros search "Brake Pedal Stop Pad" in google to search for the part you need. Additional to your cruise control not working, your brake lights should constantly be on since your car thinks your brakes are constantly being applied. Let us know if this fixes your issue. Good luck!

3 options I can immediately think of...fuse, switch and cruise-control module. Begin with the two easy ones, fuse and switch. Find the fuse and make sure it's not blown. Then use a multimeter to check the switch for continuity. Using a multimeter on the switches "inlets"/tabs/wires or what ever you can tap into, measure resistance with the switch on and off. I believe with the switch unpressed you should read open, "inf", "overload" or something to that effect. With the switch pressed you should read a very small resistance. If there is no change when you press the switch, the switch is dead and needs to be replaced. If the switch reads ok, you may unfortunately be in need of a new cruise control module...though maybe other contributors have further advice on this one?

I can't find on the internet where to physically locate the module on Accord 98?

Aug 26, 2015 by IG

I’ve got the exact same car and the module if you are looking at it from the front of the car, looking in through the front windshield, open the hood, and it will be in the bottom right corner of the hood. It’s got a wire going to the Excelerator that’s how you can find it.

I have a 2002 with 300000 miles and have the exact problem, not lite on dash button, crusie on wheel has worked on and off for past year but today after I set it and lite on dash indicated it was engaged all of a sudden the lite went out on dash and the cruise disengaged. now I have no cc.. bummer..

sorry about typo, again have exact problem, 2002 accord, no lite on on off switch on dash panel , left of steering wheel, but it seemed to work without, as when I pressed the steering wheel buttons, the lite on display came on indicating cc was on, and other steering wheel buttons worked, lately it seemed like in order for cc to work the car had to warm up, as I would press steering wheel several times and after about 5 to 10 mins it finally worked. Today on my way home from work I had the cc engaged and after about 10 mins it went out, lost cc completely.... I checked fuses.. they looked fine.. what else could it be, as I feel its not the main on off button as it has never lite prior, I did take off the right side controls on steering wheel at one point to see if there was an issue with wires but they looked fine.. I need cc. real bad.... thanks for any advise or suggestions...

Check the switch at your brake pedal,it's plastic and will wear out after so many miles. Mine completely fell out.fixed it by slipping a dime in place between the switch and pedal shaft!

Does the SRS light have anything to do with about the airbag

My SRS light on my 1998 honda coupe was on. I had put another engine in it. Rode around a year with light on. Had mechanic clear the light erase the code. Been riding now for weeks no SRS light. I was told sometimes these lights comes on and does a self check. Nothing really wrong get it cleared . Then if it comes back on address the issue.

Putin Vows to Make New Nuclear Missiles and to Weigh Placing Them Near NATO Nations

The announcement appeared to be the Russian leader’s latest attempt to raise the stakes in his conflict with the West, coming less than two weeks after his visit to North Korea.

  • Share full article

Vladimir Putin, wearing a dark suit jacket and maroon tie, stands in front of two microphones, with a uniformed guard and a flag behind him.

By David E. Sanger and Anton Troianovski

President Vladimir V. Putin declared on Friday that Russia would produce new intermediate-range nuclear-capable missiles and then decide whether to deploy them within range of NATO nations in Europe and American allies in Asia.

Mr. Putin’s threat was vaguely worded: He said nothing about timetables for deploying the weapons, and by blaming the United States for bringing similar missiles into training exercises in Europe and Asia, he seemed to be signaling he was open to negotiations.

But his timing was critical, because he made the announcement just as major elections were about to begin in Britain and France, and days ahead of the 75th anniversary NATO summit in Washington that starts on July 9. And it appeared to be Mr. Putin’s latest attempt to raise the stakes in his conflict with the West, coming less than two weeks after his visit to North Korea rattled nerves in the United States and those of American allies in Asia.

The United States pulled out of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 2019, during the Trump administration, after years of American accusations that Russia was cheating on the accord. The treaty had banned U.S. and Russian forces from having land-based cruise or ballistic missiles with ranges between about 300 and 3,400 miles.

It was one in a series of treaty withdrawals that marked the end of more than a half-century of traditional nuclear arms control, in which the key agreements were negotiated in Washington and Moscow. Only one such treaty is left: New START, which limits the intercontinental weapons each nation can hold. It expires in February 2026.

Mr. Putin could have announced plans to bolster his force of intermediate weapons at any point in the past five years, so his decision to do it now was notable. In the interim, the Pentagon has taken the first steps to deploy some weapons modified to an intermediate range in Asia, ultimately intended to counter a growing Chinese nuclear force. But the United States has not permanently redeployed any in Europe.

In brief, televised remarks in a videoconference with his national security officials on Friday, Mr. Putin referred to some recent military exercises in Denmark and suggested that it was possible the United States was preparing to leave weapons there.

“We need to respond to this and decide on our further steps in this regard,” Mr. Putin said. “It appears that we need to begin producing these attack systems and then, based on the actual situation, decide on where to deploy them to ensure our security, if necessary.”

But his motivation may simply be a reaction to recent American moves in Ukraine. When President Biden lifted his prohibition on Ukraine’s ability to fire American-supplied weapons into Russian territory — though he limited it to the area around Kharkiv, where Russia is firing weapons — Mr. Putin made clear there would be a response.

During the Cold War, such missiles were a key part of the Soviet force. But in the early 1990s, the United States removed from Europe all of its intermediate range ground-based nuclear cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, and the Soviets eliminated their SS-20 missiles. These moves were considered major steps in reducing tensions.

But a decade ago, Mr. Putin reversed Russia’s move, deploying Iskander missiles to Kaliningrad, the Russian region closest to Western European cities, which the Obama administration charged were in violation of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces treaty. But President Barack Obama decided not to withdraw from the treaty, reasoning that would lift any obligations from Mr. Putin. President Donald J. Trump reversed that decision.

The Pentagon has used the withdrawal to plan for the deployment of weapons in the Pacific that would have been previously banned under the treaty. But when military exercises are held, they almost always involve mock-ups, not real nuclear weapons.

The threat to produce more nuclear-capable missiles was also just the latest example of how Mr. Putin has tried to gain leverage in his war against Ukraine by invoking the power and reach of his nuclear arsenal. At the beginning of the invasion, he ordered weapons be put on a higher state of readiness — they apparently never were.

In October 2022, the Biden administration intercepted messages suggesting that Russian generals were planning to detonate a battlefield nuclear weapon in Ukraine, possibly at a military base. That crisis eased without any nuclear use.

The Russian authorities have arrested a top military colonel  and charged him with large-scale fraud, the state news agency TASS reported. The colonel was previously the commander of troops responsible for a 2022 massacre in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.

U.S. officials raised the security alert level  at military bases in Europe in response to vague threats from the Kremlin over Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons on Russian territory.

Evading Conscription: Fearful of a one-way ticket to bloody trench warfare, some Ukrainian men are spending their days holed up at home  to avoid draft officers who roam the streets.

Inside Russia’s Chechen Units: After hundreds of years of enmity with Russia, Chechens are deploying to Ukraine to fight Moscow’s war .

Putin says Russia may resume global deployment of intermediate range missiles

By Guy Faulconbridge and Dmitry Antonov

MOSCOW (Reuters) -President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Russia should resume production of intermediate and shorter range nuclear-capable missiles and then consider where to deploy them after the United States brought similar missiles to Europe and Asia.

Putin's move finally kills off all that remains from one of the most significant arms controls treaties of the Cold War amid fears that the world's two biggest nuclear powers could be entering a new arms race together with China.

The Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, signed by Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan in 1987, marked the first time the superpowers had agreed to reduce their nuclear arsenals and eliminated a whole category of nuclear weapons.

The United States under former President Donald Trump formally withdrew from the INF Treaty in 2019 after saying that Moscow was violating the accord, an accusation the Kremlin repeatedly denied and dismissed as a pretext.

Russia then imposed a moratorium on its own development of missiles previously banned by the INF treaty - ground-based ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of 500 km to 5,500 km.

Putin said Russia had pledged not to deploy such missiles but that the United States had resumed their production, brought them to Denmark for exercises and also taken them to the Philippines.

"We need to respond to this and make decisions about what we will have to do in this direction next," Putin was shown on state television telling Russia's Security Council.

"Apparently, we need to start manufacturing these strike systems and then, based on the actual situation, make decisions about where – if necessary to ensure our safety – to place them," he said.

DISINTEGRATION

Russia and the United States, by far the biggest nuclear powers, have both expressed regret about the disintegration of the tangle of arms control treaties which sought to slow the Cold War arms race and reduce the risk of nuclear war.

Trump in 2018 said he wanted to terminate the INF Treaty because of what he said were years of Russian violations and his concerns about China’s intermediate-range missile arsenal.

Putin has said in the past that the U.S. withdrawal would trigger a new arms race.

The United States publicly blamed Russia's development of the 9M729 ground-launched cruise missile, known in NATO as the SSC-8, as the reason for it leaving the INF Treaty.

In his moratorium proposal, Putin suggested Russia could agree not to deploy the missiles in its Baltic coast exclave of Kaliningrad. Since leaving the pact, the United States has tested missiles with a similar profile.

Putin said earlier this month he could deploy conventional missiles within striking distance of the United States and its European allies if they allowed Ukraine to strike deeper into Russia with long-range Western weapons.

In his comments on Friday, Putin gave no indication of where the missiles could be deployed.

We have just booked a cruise to the Baltics for next year. I am trying to find out the average cost for a day trip to Moscow from STP. I have searched several times, and whilst I have read reviews and reports about the trips etc - I cannot actually see any examples of the costs. I imagine its quite expensive - but we want to do it so I need to budget LOL !!

Any ballpark figures ? :D

We did the Moscow trip through our cruise ship in late July 2008. Its cost was a little under $1000 pp. Now, that cost through this cruise line is a little over that $1000 pp cost. Now, most are using the high-speed rail connection versus the air flights as we did. I have seen some other numbers from other cruise lines and/or private firms that run $700-850.

Why cheaper or the differences? As cruise lines are pressured to keep their "sticker price" low, they need to make up some "margin" with ship tours, beverages, spa stuff, etc., to help cover their costs and gain some profit. Second, different tours provide various features. Our tour included going inside the famed and spectacular Kremlin Palace. Most Moscow tours don't feature that option and you cannot just walk up there and get in on your own. That Palace is where the Czars were crowned and all of the current/recent Russian leaders assumed their powers.

We could have saved a little if we had used a private tour to go to and visit Moscow, but, with my wife's pushing, we felt it was worth it to pay a little more, do it through the cruise line. If there had been any problems or mix-ups, it was the ship's duty to "make it right" and we would not have to worry.

If you have three days in St. Petersburg and/or have been there before, then the Moscow tour can work out very well. It's not cheap, but in my view, worth it!! Both are a few of my visuals from this super great city with such interesting history and dramatic architecture.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

One of the Kremlin Wall Towers in Moscow:

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

We did the day trip to Moscow with Alla-tour and were very pleased with our tour. Our guide whose English was great was a wealth of information and the day went very smoothly. I checked the web site and Alla's prices for 2012 range from $884 a person for two down to $542 a person for 6 with the 5% cruisecritic discount. So if you can get a group together the per person price goes down considerably. You can try to do this on the roll call section of cruisecritic.

We did not go to the Palace and as Terry says this is not included generally in tours. However, we did go to the Diamond Fund, an amazing display of crown jewels and jewelry in the Armoury building but not really part of the Armoury. I would think you could include this if you had a small group and really wanted to see it. It is quite small and does not accommodate a large group. You can google "diamond fund kremlin" to learn more.

Well said, cadreamer! (nice photos, by the way).

We also used Alla. She is just a super person to work with and, if you get a group together, she will accomodate what YOU want to do!! You can check-out her Moscow tour at:

As cadreamer suggests, go to your roll call on Cruise Critic & see if you can get a group together.

Below are a few more visuals on Moscow that are more "interesting". Fascinating to having seen both cities, back-to-back. It really puts all of this unique Russian history and architecture in better perspective.

1994 Honda Accord Cruise Control Issues?

  • Add to quote

Hey, I am concerned the cruise control on my 1994 Honda Accord is malfunctioning. We were using it today and when we hit a hill the speed on the car dropped by 10 MPH. We have a newer vehicle (2007) and when we hit a hill the speed only drops 2-3 MPH. Is this normal or is the cruise control defective. Thanks in advance for any help provided. Chris

The the 94 an automatic or a manual?

It's an automatic.

99 accord cruise control

if the hill is steep enough, you will lose that much speed if not a bit more.... at least, that's how it was on my 93.... i had to help her out on the big hills in maryland on I-68 most times.... start at the bottom of the hill doing 90, and by the time you get to the top, 70mph....

That sucks, I don't know why they designed it like that. The 2007 we have never drops more than 3 MPH going up hill.

I found the cruise great on the flat areas but it does slow down on steep inclines. Once it reaches the top of the hill my speed increases about 10 KPH over the cruise setting, then goes back to the set cruise speed. Not sure if this is normal for my auto 94 Accord but i can live with it.

My 96 Accord doesn't go that low. Have you looked at the CC cable in the engine bay? Is it loose? Mine will drop but it always downshifts and speeds back up. My 99 has a whole different way of dealing with it. It constantly downshifts at the slightest incline and goes faster than I've set the CC to prevent loss of speed. I hate how this works, it's not only annoying when your car is revving up every 10 minutes, but it's scary when you want to go 60 and the car takes you to 70, then back to 60.

I wouldn't even know what the Cruise Control cable looks like, I don't work on my cars. I just wanted to get an idea if this is how the Cruise Control works on this car or if it's busted.

99 accord cruise control

I used to drive my 96 Accord between Florida and Michigan on a regular basis and never had an issue with the CC in the mountains through North Georgia and Tennessee... I'd lose about 2-3 mph initially, but it would always increase the throttle/down shift to maintain my set speed. It never dropped anywhere close to 10 mph... I was actually very impressed with how well that car handled the mountains and especially how well the cruise control worked to maintain the speed on the inclines.

Customer reviews.

Very professional and it works. We had our mechanic take it out for us and then shipped it in and he put it back in. Worked out great!

My 2012 Accord had the signs of a module failure (121_11 DTC-VSA Solenoid Valve Malfunction code and ABS, Brake and TSC lights on dash). Sent in the module and received it a week later. Nicely rebuilt and works great. Note that it requires a TCS reset procedure after installing which, in my case, was done with a bidirectional scan tool.

I had lots of lights on the dash of my 2014; ABS light, Steering Wheel Light, TPMS, and Brake light. I put off for as long as I could & it was starting to make me nervous. I read lots of great reviews & also heard about Module Masters from Youtube & forums. I decided to take a chance & remove the module myself. I am no mechanic, but tried anyway. I got the half of the module & packed it up in double & triple bubble wrap. Crossed my fingers & shipped it off on a Monday from Nevada. I paid Fedex for the 2 day & it arrived at Module Masters on Wednesday. They worked on it & i got shipping message on that Sunday. I received it on Wednesday, so all in all, took about a week. I paid for 2day shipping to there & back. Install took about 15-20mins. Got the car started & backed out of the driveway & ABS lights I mentioned above turned off. Car drives great & I feel confident about my car again. I am impressed by Module Masters. They got the job done & fast. I’ve been driving my car around for about 2 weeks and the ABS & all other dash lights have not come on again. I would definitely recommend their service to everyone here. I have also spread the word among mt family. ALSO- I did not have to bleed the brake lines. That was the part that discouraged me for the longest time. Removed Negative from battery & also the ABS module cable. I removed the 3 bolts for the bracket with a 10mm socket. There are 4 T20 Torx screws you will need to remove. Thank you to everyone here that wrote a review. Your reviews helped me a lot in removing & installing. Thank u for telling your stories. It gave me confidence to give it a try & to send my ABS Module into Module Masters. Thanks again to the whole staff at Module Masters.

Fantastic experience. 1-week turn around with shipping and $275 + 5-year warranty. Total 3-hours uninstall, install and then bleed brakes (1 bottle of brake fluid). Everything is running perfectly. The local Honda Dealership diagnosis fee was $200 + wanted $2,800 to replace the VSA Modulator ($1,500 new modulator and $1,300 labor). Simply criminal rates. I would recommend Module Master to everyone. First Class organization.

By having it re-built I saved over $800 between buying a new module and the installation.
