For 2023 the New York Travel & Adventure Show is partnering with TravMedia’s IMM North America as one of the featured events for New York’s first-ever “Travel Week” where top constituents in the industry will gather in the travel capital of the world for a week dedicated to all things travel and tourism.

“With travel restrictions lifting around the world and travel demand at an all-time high, this is a great opportunity to bring together North American media, global destinations and travel brands here to New York City to celebrate and promote travel” said Dominika Dryjski, COO of TravMedia. “We’re delighted to partner with Travel & Adventure Shows to bring Travel Week to New York, inspiring people to visit new destinations and sharing in the latest news and updates in travel.”

From January 25-26, the top travel brands will meet at the TravMedia Summit and IMM North America for the world’s leading North American media networking event. Then, January 28-29, top destinations and travel suppliers from around the globe will meet over 35,000 travel enthusiasts and trade representatives at the second annual New York Travel & Adventure Show. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements and initiatives regarding Travel Week.

“We launched the New York show last year just as consumers were coming to grips with the COVID pandemic and beginning to pan travel. Now that travel is booming again, we’re even more excited to bring a bigger and better event to the Big Apple in the heart of the travel buying season,” said John Golicz, CEO of Unicomm, LLC, the producer of the Travel & Adventure Show Series, “Tri-State residents have incredible access to nearly every destination in the world and the U.S. and we strive to inspire them with ideas of new places and things they can see. Save the date and save some travel dollars and we’ll see you in January.”

The 2023 New York Travel & Adventure Show

I’m pleased to announce that on January 28, I’ll be speaking at the New York Travel & Adventure Show. 2020 marked the final year of the New York Times Travel Show , which was held at the Javits Center in late January, the day after TravMedia’s IMM North America.

A Food Writer’s Guide to Brooklyn with Brian Cicioni

At 10:15 AM on Saturday, January 28, you can join me at the Javits Center in the Savvy Traveler Theater . I’ll be discussing what I’ve learned about Brooklyn’s food scene over the past ten years through cooking classes , food tours , and the dozens of Brooklyn-focused itineraries I’ve written for the blog, as well as outlets like Orbitz and USA Today . For a sneak preview, check out this 2021 presentation I did for The Nomadic Network.

How amazing! congrats! I wish I was around to see you speak! In other news I just saw you do a Goodfella’s tour?!?! What! My bf is obsessed! Going to have to take him back to NY ASAP!

Brian Cicioni

Yes, I do the Goodfellas tour most weekends when I’m not traveling.

Beth

I’m a total foodie, so I would love to see you speak about the area’s food. Local food is always so amazing if you know where to go.

Thanks Beth! I am working on a Brooklyn dumpling listicle as well.

Jennifer Prince

Ah! I always go to IMM, which is the day before the travel show, but it leaves me with not enough energy to go to the show. Maybe I will this year since it’s all at the same time!

Hi Jennifer. Will you attend IMM this year?

Shilpa Bindlish

That has to be a wonderful opportunity for you to participate.

Yes, Shilpa. I used to attend as a consumer back in the mid-2010s.

Ebony

I’ve never been to the New York Travel & Adventure Show, but I will be in the city that week! I’ll share with a few friends. Looking forward to hearing you speak!

Thanks Ebony. Use IMAYROAM23 for $6 off admission.

Max elevation

High altitudes.

Trekking to high altitude (generally this means above 2500 meters) involves additional risk not normally associated with lower-level treks. This is not something that should prevent you from undertaking a trek. However, before embarking on such a holiday, it makes sense to learn about the dangers inherent in trekking at high altitudes and also the ‘golden rules' to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

TRIP SELECION

For each of our holidays, the maximum altitudes attained are listed on the website and in the heading of the individual Trip Notes. In addition, the altitudes of each camp and each pass are listed in the daily itinerary. You should read the Trip Notes carefully and use your judgment to gauge whether your chosen holiday is suitable for your level of experience. If you have any doubts at all you should contact our office. Our experienced staff is more than happy to talk about altitude-related issues during our holidays.

ACCLIMATIZATION

The human body is capable of adapting to a very wide range of barometric pressures. This adaptation process is known as acclimatization and it does take time. The most important rule is to gain height slowly and it is generally accepted that the maximum safe altitude gain in any one day is 500 meters once above 2500 meters. Where this is not possible, then it is important to have a rest or acclimatization day at the new altitude before gaining further height. In general the maxim ‘climb high and sleep low' applies. It is perfectly acceptable (and even beneficial to your acclimatization) to climb higher than 500 meters above your last camp (for example when crossing a high pass) as long as the increase in sleeping altitude remains within the above rule.

There is a correlation between daily fluid intake and successful acclimatization and you must pay particular attention to hydration during trekking at high altitudes. On treks to 3000 meters and above most people will need to drink between 4 and 6 liters each day to achieve suitable hydration levels and you must adopt a responsible approach to achieving this target.

ACUTE MOUNTAIN SICKNESS

Before embarking on a trek to high altitude it is important that you familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and that you report any illness to your tip leader straight away. See the links at the bottom of this page for further reading on AMS.

There are a number of untested herbal remedies which claim to prevent mountain sickness. However, only one drug is currently known to have a useful role in preventing AMS and to be safe for this purpose: acetazolamide (Diamox). We recommend that you carry Diamox in your first aid kit for treks where you spend an extended period above 4000m. Diamox can only be obtained from a medical professional on prescription and it is important that you first consult your own doctor so that you know there are no contra indications with other medicines you may be taking and that you do not have an allergy to acetazolamide. Diamox commonly causes some minor side effects, such as tingling fingers and toes, or a metallic taste in the mouth, but more severe reactions are rare. On trek, the decision whether or not and when, you should take Diamox as with any drug, will rest solely with you. If you intend to take Diamox, you must familiarize yourself with the appropriate dosage and regime prior to coming on the trip. The links at the bottom of this page will provide further information on the use of Diamox as an aid to acclimatization.

Travelling to high altitudes is not something you need to be scared of. Every year thousands of people enjoy the most amazing experiences in the world's greatest mountain ranges. Altitude sickness is entirely preventable if you follow very simple rules and procedures. Please make sure you are aware of these before you travel.

SUMMARY OF DIFFICULTY The hike up to our campsite is a moderate 6 miles and 1400ft of elevation gain. The scramble up to Pyramid Ridge can be steep and difficult, but very adventurous and with just light day packs. Hiking

2023 new york travel & adventure show promo code

Please Note:  Terrain, Elevation Gain and Heights Exposure ratings reflect the section or day of the trip with the maximum difficulty of each. Much of the trip is at easier levels. See the trip itinerary for more detailed information. Backpack Weight ratings are estimates that account for Wildland-provided gear, guest clothing, personal items and a share of group food. By packing light it’s often possible to stay on the lower end of the weight range. Pack weights also decrease during the trip.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Hiking uphill or downhill with a 25-35 lb backpack for 5-7 hours
  • Hiking uphill off trail with a 8-12 lb backpack for 6-8 hours
  • Maintaining balance and footing on moderately rugged terrain
  • Hiking with moderate heights exposure

To show the relative difficulty of our adventure holidays, each trip is graded on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most challenging. Our simple, colour-coded grade symbol provides an indication of the difficulty of each trip.

Clearly, there are many different factors that contribute to the difficulty of a particular holiday, including, length of day, terrain, type of accommodation, altitude and weather conditions. Since some of these factors are necessarily changeable, any system of grades can only provide a general indication. If you have any questions about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability for you, please read the detailed Trip Notes and if you are still unsure, please do not hesitate to contact us

2023 new york travel & adventure show promo code

GREEN 1 - 4 LEISURELY

Suitable for most people in good health, holidays at this grade include only limited amounts of activity.

YELLOW 5 - 7 MODERATE

Suitable for reasonably fit individuals, such as weekend walkers and cyclists. There can be the occasional more difficult day.

RED 08 - 10 TOUGH

Our toughest holidays, involve many long days, often in isolated areas. A high level of fitness and previous wilderness experience is essential.

While visiting New York City in January may seem like a strange idea of fun, we booked an extended weekend to be here for the popular New York Travel & Adventure Show. It was also a great excuse to come to this wonderful city to enjoy some great food and take in a Broadway show.

The New York Travel & Adventure Show has been on for 20 years and is quite famous. We wondered why it was held in January and came to the conclusion that those stuck in the frigid January cold are probably more likely to jump on the specials to all those warm and sunny destinations being exhibited. Well, whatever the reason, there are always great specials, prizes, and giveaways. Above all, we thought we would get some good trip ideas .

We had attended the show a few years back and visited the Croatia booth which led us to organize our own road trip in Croatia . The country is beautiful with breathtaking scenery, interesting attractions and delicious food. This year we were also looking for scuba destinations and who knows what would catch our eye. We attended with an open mind.

We flew into LaGuardia which is the closest airport to the Manhattan area. We stayed at the Westin in Times Square which was perfect for sightseeing and only a few blocks from the Javits Center where the show was being hosted. We could not help but think that during the pandemic this whole center was turned into a field hospital for covid patients. Hard to imagine and so sad. Remember when they said NYC would never recover? Well, New Yorkers are resilient and from the looks of the show and the hustle and bustle of the city NYC is doing very well, thank you!

Time Square

We planned our arrival for the Friday afternoon to have time for our favorite John’s of Time Squares pizzeria . This well-known pizza joint is set inside an old cathedral complete with stained-glass windows and a cupola ceiling. Mmm.

We were also hopeful to get in a Broadway show if we could swing last-minute tickets. We got lucky and got to see Six. Fabulous!

The Javits Convention Center is huge and after registration we made our way onto the show floor to start exploring.

First things first. One great thing we remembered about the NY Travel & Adventure Show was the multitude of companies giving away trips and goodies.

The giveaways are listed in the agenda, and we saw a free week to Croatia, even a free safari, wow! Odds are slim but if you don’t enter you don’t win for sure.

Of course, last time we laughed when we both got separate calls to be named a lucky winner of a discounted safari (which ended up being a deal but far from something to jump on, so we planned our own ).

Many of these travel deals are really ‘at the show only’ promos so if you’re ready to book it can work well. But in our case, we like to mull things over for comparisons sake before we buy. But free is free so we made our rounds scanning QR codes and dropping off business cards in the various draws to try our luck.

The show was packed. Everyone wants to get back to travel but it was also going on at the same time as a dog show and a boat show at the Javits Center. This year it was all the way at the end and in a smaller venue than we remember.

There is so much information online now and the specials at the show seemed few and far between and limited in scope despite the promises on the web. We saw specials such as saving $200 or $300 if you book at the show. This is rarely our style as we are likely to get our plane tickets first and plan our trip in consequence, so this was of little value to us.

Even the big seminars with keynote speakers were disappointing rehashing many of the same points we’ve heard over and over. Best line we heard at one of the show’s seminars in reference to a tag line for a major airline in the US: “We’re not happy until you’re not happy!”.

Travel Show Seminars

We visited the Croatia booths and found out more about other parts of the country which may be interesting for us to do in the future.

Another highlight was a Philippines-based resort catering to divers. We spent some time with the representative looking at beautiful underwater pictures. As with many such resorts it’s the getting there that can be challenging. However, looking at the pictures made it seem like it would be worthwhile.

We also met a representative from the Aggressor liveaboards. We discussed some of the itineraries including the Jardines del Rey in Cuba which is supposed to be pristine and full of life.

There was also an interesting South Korean Tae-Kwon-do based tour showing the history of the martial arts.

We even met one tour company from the UK that organized castle hopping adventures in Ireland and Scotland, England and Wales. Interesting!

We also talked to some ladies about Sicily and learned about a pistachio-based pesto which sounded delicious. Maybe something we will try to make at home.

Notably absent was any representation from many of the other European venues such as Spain, Portugal, France, etc.

Sicilian Music Show at the Global Beat Stage

Leaving the travel show, we felt like it was perhaps two-thirds if not half the size of the pre-pandemic years. We got a few ideas but left much of the aisle-by-aisle browsing for day 2.

On the last day, we were intent on walking the aisles and seeing all the booths that could be interesting for planning future trips. The show opened at 11 am instead of 10 am. So, to pass the time we went to look at safari cameras at NYC’s famous B+H Photo Store which is close to the Javits Center.

Heading into the trade show we were immediately stricken by how much less busy it was than on the first day. Instead of attending various seminars we walked around the floor and got some great ideas for planning our future travels. Most were scuba related:

  • Watakobi Dive Resort in Indonesia, a haven for macro life with pristine seas. It’s so remote that to get there we need to fly into Bali, then take a small local flight and then a boat ride to the heart of the Coral Triangle. Not easy to get too, and expensive, but the diving would surely be amazing!
  • Sint Eustatius, a tiny Dutch island in the Caribbeans. Much closer to us from Miami but we would still need to take a 15-minute flight or take a ferry from Sint Maarten. The Golden Rock Dive and Nature Resort looked very inviting.
  • The Philippines booth also caught out attention being another coveted dive destination. It takes some effort to get there from Miami. First, we would need to fly into Manila, then head out to Raja Ampat, Cebu, Puerto Galera or one of the other numerous islands in the Philippines and then take a boat. The Marco Vincent Dive Resort in Puerto Galera offered an interesting dive package worth considering.
  • Okinawa in subtropical Japan is also renowned for excellent scuba diving and there’s also some great topside activities. We have great memories of our trip to Japan and wouldn’t mind revisiting.
  • Croatia for another road trip to explore more of the country because we truly enjoyed our first road trip along the Dalmatian Coast.
  • Sicily because the scenery is spectacular, and we would love to see more of this part of Italy .

As usual, we got some fresh ideas for travel, and we were happy to attend the 2023 New York Travel and Adventure Show.

In addition, we managed to catch a show on Broadway, enjoy delicious food, and shop at our favorite camera store B&H. And yes, we even bought a camera for our upcoming safari and the service was excellent as always.

It’s always fun to have an excuse to go to New York City and revisit some of our favorite places.
