2013-14 PGA Tour schedule elongates, segments new season

2013 14 pga tour

If you had been thinking September was awfully early in the calendar year to wind down the PGA Tour season, you’ll probably change your tune come a year and three days from now.

At that time, the 2013-2014 TOUR Championship will have concluded at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, capping off a season that will have begun just under 11 months prior, at the Frys.com Open in Silicon Valley.

Anyone who may have thought the PGA Tour season was growing too much like a sprint will be pleased to look back on the coming season as more of a marathon.

The Tour has released the 2013-14 schedule, which will see a single season take place in two calendar years for the first time in the modern era of professional golf. The upcoming offseason will be one of the shortest in professional sport—a grand total of 14 days. For many, there won’t be time to put down the clubs for even a week, much less take a bit of a sabbatical and recharge their physical and emotional batteries.

The aforementioned Frys.com Open begins less than a month from now, on Oct. 10, at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif. It won’t be as pat an opening to the season as the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii—a purse-fattening event open to all winners of Tour events the previous season—but that may prove a welcome change. As beautiful as the Hawaiian scenery is, especially on HD televisions, the laid-back nature of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions has always made for a bit of a sleepy start because every player in the field will have full Tour status for the entire year anyway.

Not so under the new Tour schedule. From the first shot on Thursday at the Frys.com, the race to capture career-saving victories, maiden triumphs and a generally positive frame of competitive mind will be on in earnest. Five of the first six tournaments of the year should see fields that, while sometimes lacking in the bigger names, will produce plenty of high-quality golf. Many of the key figures in these events will have either just earned their chance on the PGA Tour or eked out a top-125 money list finish to keep their cards. Either way, the late-season pressure will be fresh in their minds and they will be doing all they can to ensure they will avoid it this time around.

Some other items of interest about the new schedule:

  • The new schedule takes the best players in the world to some exotic locales early in the year. Note the CIMB Classic, the third event of the year, to be played at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club in Malaysia’s capital city. The following week, the World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions will be contested in China, at Shanghai’s Sheshan International Golf Club.
  • The newly-named OHL Classic at Mayakoba receives its own date after being shifted from the shortened 2013 season to the beginning of the 2013-2014 schedule: November 11-14. Previously, the event had been played on the same dates as the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship. With its own place on the schedule, the popular event should attract an even better field.
  • The World Cup of Golf, a two-man team event where each team represents a different country, will be played at the incomparable Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia, which drew rave reviews while hosting the 2011 Presidents Cup. Due to the time difference, the live telecast will run from 10:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. ET, but it will be well worth staying up past one’s normal bedtime just to gawk at Alister Mackenzie’s masterpiece.
  • Players feeling the fatigue of a stressful end-of-season followed nearly immediately by the beginning of a new one will benefit from a more significant break, which will run from Thanksgiving up to New Years. Wisely, the PGA Tour is not going to compete with college and professional football for a significant chunk of the late fall and early winter. This time away will allow players to freshen up and allow fans to build up excitement for the 2014 portion of the schedule.

As has happened with the FedEx Cup, it will take a few years to grow accustomed to the new schedule. With 45 total events, the PGA Tour schedule will be an exercise in pacing for both players and fans who will all be hoping to keep burnout to a minimum.

Why Wyndham Clark is playing a brand-new driver and an old putter this week

2013 14 pga tour

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt of an article originally filed for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report by our Andrew Tursky. Read the full piece here.

At the top end of the bag, Clark is set to change into Titleist’s new GT2 driver during the first week it’s being made available to PGA TOUR players. On Monday, Titleist officially unveiled its new lineup of GT drivers and fairway woods, and Clark plans to become one of the early adopters of the new technology as competition begins on Thursday at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Interestingly, Clark was relatively late to make a permanent switch into the company’s previous TSR3 driver. Although the TSR drivers first launched in 2022, Clark was back-and-forth with the 2020 TSi3 driver and the 2022 TSR3 driver until the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2024.

On Wednesday, GolfWRX.com caught up with Clark to get his take on the new GT2 driver, and why he’s switching so quickly.

“It’s faster (than my previous TSR3),” Clark said. “I felt like I got 2-3 mph more ball speed, which is amazing. And it has really consistent spin, which is obviously huge for what we do out here.”

2013 14 pga tour

…On the bottom end of the bag, Clark will likely play his first event since 2023 without an Odyssey Jailbird putter in the bag.

In case you forgot, Clark and Rickie Fowler were the trendsetters who brought the 2014 Odyssey Versa Jailbird back to the forefront of the golf market in 2023. Clark then switched into the upgraded Odyssey Ai Jailbird during the week of his win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

This week, however, Clark is going back in time, switching into a PXG prototype mallet that he used in 2022.

Details on Justin Thomas’ gas station putter pickup

2013 14 pga tour

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report detailing how Justin Thomas acquired his new Scotty Cameron putter.  Head over there for the full article.

…Thomas was texting with Paul Vizanko (Director of Scotty Cameron Putter Fitting and Player Development), and Thomas explained what he was thinking, seeing and feeling on the putting greens of late. Thomas is currently ranked 159th in Strokes Gained: Putting on the PGA TOUR, so maybe it was time for a change.

After hearing Thomas’ thought processes, Vizanko suggested that Thomas might actually like a custom putter build that he previously made for Sargent.

2013 14 pga tour

Gordon Sargent’s custom Cameron.

Sargent is entering his Senior year at Vanderbilt University, but he’s no ordinary college student. He’s currently the No. 1-ranked Men’s amateur golfer in the world according to the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and he’s already competed in four PGA TOUR events, including the 2023 Masters and the 2023 U.S. Open. He also won the 2022 Men’s Division I Individual Championship.

Thomas, who says he has gotten to know Sargent in recent years, reached out to Sargent via text prior to the Memorial.

2013 14 pga tour

Thomas needed a putter, and Sargent – according to Vizanko – might have his answer.

Since Sargent and Thomas live within driving distance to each other in Alabama, they met up at a local gas station to make the hand-off.

“I texted Gordon [about using the putter], and he said he wasn’t using it, so I could have it,” Thomas told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday at Muirfield Village Golf Club. “I’ve gotten to know Gordon some…so we met up at a gas station to make the transfer.”

The PGA Tour unveiled the remainder of the 2013-14 schedule on Monday, the circuit’s first wrap-around lineup that begins in October with the Frys.com Open . ( Click here for full schedule )

Following the six fall events, which had already been announced, the Tour takes a month and a half break before the season picks up with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions followed by the traditional West Coast swing.

The Tour moves east in March for the Florida swing, followed by the Texas Open and Shell Houston Open , which had traded positions on the calendar this year but Houston returns to its traditional pre-Masters date in 2014.

Not included in the 2013-14 lineup will be the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi, which has been moved from July when it was played opposite the Open Championship to the lead off position on the 2014-15 schedule. The only opposite-field events remaining on the schedule are the Puerto Rico Open , played the same week as the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, and the Reno-Tahoe Open , played during the WGC- Bridgestone Invitational .

The only other change to the 45-event schedule is the playoff format, which will be played in consecutive weeks beginning with The Barclays in late August. At the request of the PGA of America, the Tour moved the “bye” week, which came after the Deutsche Bank Championship this season, to the week after the Tour Championship to allow players bound for the Ryder Cup in Scotland a quick rest before the matches.

“Our captain (Tom Watson) felt like it was imperative that our players had a week off after to the Tour Championship and the beginning of the Ryder Cup,” said PGA president Ted Bishop last month. “Obviously the week off prior to the Ryder Cup, hopefully, will be good for our players.”

2024 Memorial Tournament Round 1 updates: Adam Hadwin holds onto Memorial lead after first round

2013 14 pga tour

The 2023 Memorial Tournament did not scare Adam Hadwin off from returning to Muirfield Village Golf Course.

After finishing the first round in 2023 3-under par, Hadwin missed the cut after finishing with four bogeys and two double-bogeys in the second round.

Hadwin put the 2023 tournament behind him in the first round of the 2024 Memorial Tournament Thursday, leaving as the clubhouse leader at 6-under part 72 with eight bogeys.

Hadwin is a stroke ahead of Scottie Scheffler , the No. 1 golfer in the world, at 5-under par. Xander Schauffele , Ludvig Aberg , Collin Morikawa and Corey Conners are two strokes behind Hadwin at 4-under.

“I feel pretty comfortable right now over the golf ball with kind of the entire game,” Hadwin said. “I never felt rushed. I never felt that as I kept making birdies, like I was getting ahead of myself or anything like that. Very comfortable. I feel in a lot better position to kind of handle any sort of adversity that may come or when it comes, because I feel like it will come around this place. There’s just too many holes where the margin for error is so small that you can feel like you hit a good shot and get absolutely screwed. I feel like mentally I’m in a really good place right now to be able to handle that and move forward and accept it. And so we’ll show up tomorrow and get ready and see what it holds.”

The second round of the Memorial Tournament tees off at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Here’s what happened in the first round Thursday:

Miles Russell, 15, to play Rocket Mortgage Classic

Change Text Size

Miles Russell already has finished in the top 25 of a Korn Ferry Tour event. Now he is preparing to play on the PGA TOUR.

He’s just 15.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic announced Monday that it has given Russell a sponsor exemption into the PGA TOUR’s annual stop in Detroit. The tournament will be played June 27-30 at Detroit Golf Club.

Russell has quickly established himself as one of golf’s top up-and-coming prospects. He won both the Junior PGA Championship and Junior PLAYERS Championship in 2023, then became the youngest player to ever be named the American Junior Golf Association’s Player of the Year. Tiger Woods is the only other player to win the award before turning 16.

This year, Russell became the youngest player to ever make a cut on the Korn Ferry Tour and just the second player under the age of 16 to make a cut on either the PGA TOUR or Korn Ferry Tour (Tianlang Guan is the other).

Russell eventually finished T20 at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Lecom Suncoast Classic, shooting 68-66-70-66.

Russell will be among the youngest players ever to make their debut on the PGA TOUR. The record belongs to Michelle Wie West, who was granted a sponsor exemption to play in the 2004 Sony Open at the age of 14 years, 3 months and 4 days. Wie West also became the fourth woman to play a TOUR event. Guan (2013 Masters), Andy Zhang (2012 U.S. Open) and Lorens Chan (2009 Sony Open) also debuted at 14 years old. Other 15-year-olds to play TOUR events have included John Oda (2012 Sony Open), Tadd Fujikawa (2006 U.S. Open) and Bob Pasanik (1957 Canadian Open).
