WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR “PANO” HERE

2021 was a year of breakthroughs for singer-songwriter, and producer Tabudlo. His anthemic singles “ Binibini ” and “ Nangangamba ” dominated multiple local Filipino and international charts across major streaming platforms.

After signing to Island Records Philippines/MCA Music in 2020, Tabudlo emerged as one of the fastest rising Original Filipino Music (OPM) artists - breaking records for streaming, digital sales, and airplay.

Tabudlo is very much known for his participation in The Voice Kids Philippines. As the years progressed, Tabudlo ventured into songwriting and music production. In 2020, he joined Island Records Philippines where he continued honing his identity as a musician by releasing songs such as “ Nangangamba ”, and “ Sigurado ”.

“ Episode is a word that gave such an impact to me at times where I was at my lowest,” Tabudlo singer-songwriter explains. “People would say ‘here he is with another episode’ or another stage of problems, where obviously not anyone would want to experience. It’s ironic to put it as an album title but it’s how I went through these stories, with these episodes. Everything is based on personal experiences, from heartbreak and love, from life to unfortunate events.”

The whole album is Tabudlo’s personal masterpiece. He was the sole writer, producer, and even mixed and mastered all 14 tracks. His growth as an artist is very evident in this album as he explored various musical styles in bringing these songs to life - ultimately creating his own sound with influences from pop, R&B, bedroom electronica, punk rock, ‘80s, and ‘90s alternative rock.

Zack Tabudlo is here for a good time and a long time

By Angel Martinez Published Mar 11, 2022 5:00 am

Everywhere I go on the Internet, I see Zack Tabudlo. First, on Facebook as he posts yet another cryptic message that quickly goes viral; then on TikTok where he’s seen covering the official soundtrack of Our Beloved Summer ; then again on Spotify, where his song Pano sits on top of the national charts for the second month in a row. But not even this constant exposure could have prepared me for a Monday afternoon Zoom call with the country’s biggest singer today —my second most-played artist of all time, despite only having discovered him last December.

There’s a certain sense of confidence and self-assurance you’d expect from someone with his level of visibility. Yet all throughout our conversation, Zack exuded an aura of quiet humility not normally seen in celebrities of his stature, as if he still can’t believe this is his life. When I asked him how he’s been dealing with his newfound fame, he looked away from the camera and laughed to himself, quick to shoot down rumors that it’s changed him in any way.

zack tabudlo us tour

“I’d like to think I’m very much the same as I was before,” he shared. “Me and my dad, we obviously track my growth through social media, especially Spotify. But I feel like staying in the same place I’ve always been in due to the pandemic, being with the same people and within the same circle just helped ground me.” This modesty takes root in Zack’s lengthy experience on the other side of the spectrum. After a brief stint on a nationwide talent search, it took years of performing to five fans at every show and getting little to no streams on his songs before a certain platform skyrocketed his career.

After releasing a song, it’s not just about you anymore: it’s about everyone else who listens to you.

“When we released Nangangamba last November 2020, it didn’t get much attention,” he recalled. “Sure, we were gaining some listeners bit by bit but it wasn’t until it went viral on TikTok that we were able to connect with such a wide audience.” Still on a high from the track’s second wind, he released Binibini shortly afterwards and the rest was history. “I remember my friends being so happy when they saw that the song was everywhere on social media. They told me there was nothing but my face whenever they would go on Facebook; it was pretty funny.”

Although virality has cemented his status as a household name, it would be a disservice to attribute his hard-earned success to the algorithm alone. The 20-year-old singer-songwriter-producer extraordinaire has perfected the art of making music for the masses, by combining his vocal prowess with a keen awareness of popular sonic and lyrical elements. “Every time aspiring producers and artists ask me how I make songs, I always tell them that they need to be in an environment full of people who know what’s ‘in,’” he said. “Really try and tap into what they want to listen to as of today by getting their likes and their interests. When you take these stereotypes and incorporate your own artistry, that makes all the difference.”

It’s this formula that allows him to appeal to Filipinos and foreigners alike — a statement that may be controversial for long-time OPM fans. Over the past few years, we’ve seen the discourse surrounding the so-called death of our local music industry: that the corporation-backed sellouts topping the charts no longer represent our collective interests and instead copy whatever’s trending among international artists. But what has always set OPM apart from everything else is its ability to pull emotions from deep within; to weave them into narratives that strike a chord, regardless of any linguistic or cultural barriers –– or hugot, as we like to call it.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Zack Tabudlo (@zack.tabudlo)

This is a language Zack is very fluent in: in fact, he’s become our go-to guy for all stages of love, as we can see in his widely successful debut album “Episode.” All 14 songs talk about a specific aspect of modern-day relationships in its own distinct approach: my personal favorites include the rock ballad about the hesitation that comes with falling again ( Heart Can’t Lose ), the bluesy funk anthem on euphoric first relationships ( High ), and the VST-inspired promise of an eternal love ( Habang Buhay ). It’s a story that demands to be listened to from beginning to end, and one that I honestly can’t stop revisiting.

Zack and his team continue to push the envelope through other creative efforts, such as his album’s K-pop-esque branding and packaging, and the interconnected music videos for each of the tracks – his own ZT cinematic universe. He even hinted at some big-time collaborations—the latest being Iba with fellow heartbreaker Moira Dela Torre, released last Valentine’s Eve—and international gigs, including an eight-city US tour with Filipino rock band December Avenue.

But despite his consecutive wins, he is anything but complacent. Though he’s no stranger to inevitable hate comments on the internet, Zack still considers himself his biggest critic: “I doubt myself a lot, often wonder if I should do this or do that, then think that what I come up with sucks so bad. I continue incorporating all my inner criticisms (in what I do), since I want to become a better version of myself every day.”

His perfectionism is crucial to his work, as he understands that his responsibility above anything else “is to give fans a sense of happiness and connection, (because) my listeners go through such horrible stuff and my work has the power to give them more hope. After releasing a song, it’s not just about you anymore: it’s about everyone else who listens to you, and what your music does for them.”

This much activity can burn even the brightest of stars out –– but not Zack. It’s an advantage, he claims, of being a young person in the industry: getting to do what he loves for a living is just pure, unadulterated fun that he hopes never ends. “Sure, I know it’s work at the end of the day, what with the long and tiring hours and everything,” he admitted. “But after keeping at this craft for years, I’m just incredibly blessed and happy to be where I’m at. It’s an honor to keep doing this, to keep making music for all of these people.”

Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Band light up Acrisure Stadium

Alexis Papalia

”The spirit of Jimmy Buffett is here with us tonight,” remarked Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band, Saturday night at Acrisure Stadium.

He was absolutely right. With Kenny Chesney, the leader of “No Shoes Nation,” headlining the “Sun Goes Down Tour,” the Buffett-esque beach vibes were out in full force. Many see Chesney as the spiritual successor to Buffett, but Zac Brown Band has a decent shot at the throne, as well.

Joining Chesney and Zac Brown Band at Saturday night’s show were Uncle Kracker, who played a short but energetic set of his hits and some well-chosen covers, as well as Megan Moroney, a talented young singer and songwriter who gave an enticing preview of her new album coming out this July. The thread of summer ran through their song choices, with Uncle Kracker covering Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” and Moroney doing a spirited version of Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ‘69.”

Zac Brown Band did even more covers, not nearly as thematic but almost all as well-chosen. After opening with their songs “Keep Me in Mind” and “Toes,” they played an incredible quickfire cover of the Charlie Daniels Band’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” that left no doubt who would win the battle for Johnny’s soul. They also gave a surprising shot at “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was tons of fun with the audience singing along to every word. And they struck just the right note with segments of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic,” Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” and the Eagles’ “Take It To the Limit” woven in with some of their own songs.

They also played a countrified version of “Paint It Black” by the Rolling Stones with some mean fiddling, and they somehow even managed to pull off the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage.”

In between, they played plenty of their own tunes, some laid-back and beachy and some with a little bit more pep in their step. After fan favorite “Chicken Fried,” they brought new Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson onstage, to roaring cheers from the whole stadium, and he gifted a jersey to Zac Brown.

Appropriately, as the sun was completing its descent, the headliner of the “Sun Goes Down Tour” got set to take the stage. After an intro montage video of relaxed members of “No Shoe Nation,” Chesney bounded onto the stage in a black tank top with gold piping, jeans and a white cowboy hat. He was tanned and exuberant, smiling easily the entire night.

Chesney has been around awhile — he commented Saturday night that the first time he’d been in that particular stadium was in 2005, and this was his 12th time there, but he’s been touring almost a decade longer than that, and his debut album came out 30 years ago. Chesney’s fans are well-known for partying when he comes to town , and positivity was the name of the game throughout his entire set inside the stadium.

After starting the night with a run of high-energy party songs, including “Living in Fast Forward,” “Beer in Mexico,” “Keg in the Closet” and “Here and Now,” Chesney called out over the screaming crowd, “What a beautiful day, what a beautiful night!”

Chesney’s blend of country, rock and chilled-out beach music makes for a great Saturday night party. He was having a blast and it was infectious; he jumped around the stage and urged the crowd to clap along, and his band played every song like it could be the evening’s finale.

He didn’t do it alone, either. For “When The Sun Goes Down,” he brought Uncle Kracker back out onstage in a T.J. Watt Steeler jersey, and they followed that song up with a duet of “Drift Away,” a cover that scored Uncle Kracker a hit in 2003.

After, the stadium went quieter as he said, “I haven’t done this song all year,” and sang the heartfelt ballad “There Goes My Life,” accompanied by keys and the flashlights of thousands of cell phones.

Chesney’s voice is deep and twangy, pairing smoothly with rockier house party jams and beach anthems alike, but he can make it wistful and emotive when the right ballad calls for it.

He also brought out a beaming Megan Moroney to sing with him on the rocking “All The Pretty Girls.” Both she and Uncle Kracker earned huge hugs from the headliner.

Following that, he continued into the John Mellencamp-esque “Young” and the actually-referencing-John-Mellencamp “American Kids.” After a fiery performance of “Setting The World On Fire,” he sang the sunshiney “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” and ended the regular set with “How Forever Feels.”

Coming back for the encore, he slowed it down with “Anything But Mine,” a really lovely ballad that his band absolutely ran away with in a whirlwind of bass and guitar before transitioning to a perfect cap on the evening, “Don’t Happen Twice.” As the musicians around him jammed harder and faster at the song’s close, Chesney took some time to sign an assortment of items for fans up front before wishing a final farewell, just around two hours after taking the stage.

Many of Chesney’s songs are about escapism or nostalgia, but that fits summer perfectly — his lyrics evoke days at amusement parks and evenings at drive-ins, or dancing on the beach with a rum cocktail in hand. Perfect for June 1, just when another summer season is gearing up.
