Common Problems with VW Adaptive Cruise Control

While VW’s Adaptive Cruise Control is designed to provide a seamless driving experience, there have been a few reported issues that may impact its performance.

Some of the most common problems with VW’s ACC system include:

Sudden disengagement of the system

Inaccurate speed control, false alerts and warnings, unresponsive controls, unexpected braking, random acceleration.

One of the most frustrating problems reported by VW car owners is the sudden disengagement of the Adaptive Cruise Control system while driving.

This can be a safety concern, especially on highways and busy roads where consistent speed control is crucial. In such cases, the ACC system may turn off without any warning or apparent reason, leaving the driver to manually adjust their speed.

Reasons: This could be due to various reasons, including technical malfunctions or sensor issues. It can be a cause for concern as it disrupts the smooth driving experience that ACC is designed to provide.

Solutions: If you encounter sudden disengagement of the ACC system, it is recommended to get your vehicle checked by a certified mechanic or visit your nearest VW dealership for assistance.

It’s also essential to follow the proper maintenance schedule and keep all sensors clean to avoid this problem.

Another common issue reported by drivers is inaccurate speed control while using Adaptive Cruise Control. This can lead to unexpected acceleration or deceleration, causing discomfort and potentially hazardous situations on the road.

Inaccurate speed control refers to the ACC system not maintaining a steady speed as set by the driver. It may result in sudden changes in velocity, which can be dangerous, especially in heavy traffic conditions.

Reasons: There can be several reasons for inaccurate speed control on VW Adaptive Cruise Control. One of the main culprits could be a malfunctioning sensor, which may not accurately measure the distance from other vehicles on the road.

Additionally, outdated software or calibration issues can also lead to incorrect speed control by the ACC system.

Solutions: To ensure accurate speed control, it is crucial to keep your vehicle’s sensors and cameras clean at all times. Additionally, always follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule for your vehicle.

If you notice any issues with the ACC system, have it checked by a professional immediately.

Aside from inaccurate speed control, another common issue with VW Adaptive Cruise Control is false alerts and warnings.

This can happen when the system detects a potential collision or obstacle on the road, causing it to apply brakes abruptly even if there is no real danger.

False alerts and warnings occur when the ACC system mistakenly identifies a potential collision or obstacle on the road, causing it to react as if there is an imminent danger.

Reasons: False alerts and warnings can occur due to a variety of reasons, including environmental factors such as heavy rain or snow that may obstruct the sensors’ view.

Other common causes include objects on the road that resemble other vehicles, low sensor battery, or issues with the system’s software.

Solutions: To address false alerts and warnings, it is essential to regularly clean and maintain the sensors and cameras of your vehicle’s ACC system.

If you encounter this issue frequently, consider getting the system checked by a certified technician for any underlying hardware or software problems.

In some cases, recalibrating the system or updating its software may also help resolve false alerts.

Another common problem reported by VW owners with adaptive cruise control systems is unresponsive controls. This issue occurs when the system fails to respond to driver inputs, such as adjusting the desired speed or distance from other vehicles.

Reasons: There are several potential reasons for unresponsive controls in a VW adaptive cruise control system. One common cause is dirty or damaged sensors, which may prevent the system from accurately detecting and responding to other vehicles on the road.

Additionally, issues with the system’s wiring or connections can also lead to unresponsiveness.

In some cases, software glitches or malfunctions may cause the controls

Solutions: If you are experiencing unresponsive controls with your VW adaptive cruise control, there are several steps you can take to address the problem.

First, try cleaning the sensors and ensuring that they are not obstructed by any debris or damage.

If this does not solve the issue, it may be necessary to have a technician examine the system for any potential hardware or software problems.

In some cases, a system reset or software update may also help to resolve the issue.

It is important to address any problems with your ACC system promptly and seek professional assistance if needed to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Another common issue reported with VW adaptive cruise control is unexpected braking. This can occur when the system incorrectly detects a vehicle in front and applies the brakes, causing a sudden decrease in speed.

Drivers may also experience this when approaching a curve or exit ramp, where the system mistakenly interprets an obstacle as a vehicle and engages the brakes.

Reasons: There are several potential reasons for unexpected braking in a VW ACC system. One possible cause is a dirty or damaged sensor, which may not accurately detect the distance of other vehicles.

Another reason may be an issue with the software, such as outdated mapping data or incorrect settings.

In some cases, certain weather conditions, such as heavy rain or snow, can also affect the accuracy of the system’s sensors and cause unexpected braking.

Solutions: If you are experiencing any issues with your VW adaptive cruise control, there are several steps you can take to address the problem.

First, make sure all sensors and cameras are clean and free of obstructions. You can also try recalibrating the system by following the instructions in your vehicle’s manual or consulting a professional technician.

In some cases, updating the software may also resolve any issues.

If the problem persists, it is important to have your VW ACC system inspected and serviced by a certified technician to ensure safe and accurate operation.

Additionally, staying informed about any recalls or updates from Volkswagen can help prevent potential issues with your system.

Another common problem reported by VW owners with adaptive cruise control is random acceleration.

This occurs when the system suddenly accelerates the vehicle without any input from the driver. This can be a dangerous and unnerving experience for drivers, especially on busy roads or highways.

Reasons: There are several possible reasons for random acceleration with VW adaptive cruise control. One common cause is a dirty or malfunctioning sensor, which can send incorrect signals to the system and result in unintended acceleration.

Another potential reason could be a software glitch or error, which may require updating or recalibrating the system.

In rare cases, there may be a mechanical issue with the vehicle itself that is causing the random acceleration.

Solutions: If you experience random acceleration with your VW adaptive cruise control, there are a few potential solutions to consider.

First, it is always recommended to have your vehicle inspected by a certified Volkswagen technician to identify and address any underlying issues.

This may involve cleaning or replacing the sensor, updating software, or making necessary adjustments to the system.

In some cases, a simple reset of the system may also resolve the issue.

How does VW adaptive cruise control work?

Now that we’ve covered some common problems with VW’s adaptive cruise control system, let’s take a closer look at how it works.

VW adaptive cruise control uses radar sensors and cameras to monitor the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles on the road.

Based on this information, the system can automatically adjust your vehicle’s speed to maintain a safe following distance.

It can also bring the vehicle to a complete stop if necessary, and resume driving when the traffic ahead moves again.

This technology is especially helpful in heavy traffic or on long highway drives, reducing driver fatigue and stress while maintaining safe driving distances.

Can you turn off the adaptive cruise control VW?

Yes, you can easily turn off adaptive cruise control on your VW vehicle.

Simply press the “Off” button on the cruise control system or use the controls on your steering wheel to deactivate it.

You can also adjust the following distance and set a maximum speed limit for the system to operate within.

If you need to temporarily pause the system, such as in heavy traffic or construction zones, you can also use the “Resume” button to resume adaptive cruise control.

Replaced Battery, now ACC and Front Assist unavailable... WTF?

  • Add to quote

So, I ran down my OE battery over the winter, got it jumped, and decided to replace it with an AGM at a later date as long as there weren't any immediate issues. Shouldn't have been a big deal. No issues since the run-down and jump with one of those battery jump packs. Just didn't have long term faith in the OEM battery after the incident. Had the battery on hand, decided to do it today. Now, I have no "Front Assist" and consequently, no cruise control. There was also an ESC warning and a TPMS warning, but those self-cleared. Any idea on what gives with the Front Assist? Will this "self-clear"? Of course, the car is no longer within the warranty period. Thanks.

Try a different dealer or independent VW shop?

Here's what happened. You put in a different battery and it wasn't coded. Thus takes a bit of time for the car to figure it out (this has been going on for a long time). Most of the time you just change one digit on the coding and it takes care of itself. Watch this and you'll see what I'm talking about:

You have got to be kidding me. The battery needs to be coded? WTF! Sooo, I wonder if there are any pitfalls to not coding it? The one I bought is aftermarket, and there are no stickers with these values.

It does not require coding obviously. Change the battery, get in, drive, all will be normal.

When you change/disconnect the battery you will have the dash light up....just drive it and they clear out once you hit ~10mph. You can also scan for codes/clear codes if things aren't going away.

"Dealer has no idea how to fix it" Sign of the times. What an effin' clown world we live in.

I'm having a similar issue but in my case I didn't replace the battery. I just disconnected it so I could run a power cable to an amplifier. Once I was done with the subwoofer installation I reconnected the battery terminal and I got all the errors. TPMS and ESP went away but not ACC and Front Assist not Available. I did a really clean job, no shorting out wires or tapping on the wrong wires. Just got power directly from the battery to run a digital amplifier which I grounded to the chassis. The input signal to the amp were taken from the rear speakers. The remote turn on lead was tapped into an empty fuse slot with a single space connector which didn't complete the circuit in the fuse box. Just received power when the car is switched on or running. I'm dumbfounded that may disconnecting a car battery and reconnecting the same battery can wreck havoc. I find it ridiculous.

This morning I took my AT and disconnected the battery and let it sit for a few hours. Hooked it back up and when I started it, 6 errors came up (tire pressure, ACC, park assist and 3 others I can't remember). So, backed out of the garage and drove 0.3 miles around the block and pulled it back in the garage. No errors showed up in the infotainment but the no ACC light on in the instrument cluster. I turned the engine off and restarted it 5 seconds later. The ACC warning in the cluster is now gone. Then used my VCDS and about 10 different codes came up but all were self cleared because those modules needed the car to be moving and operating to do their self test (if you have a VCDS you will know what I'm talking about). For anyone that is worried, this is what happens on a 2017 AT with SEL, DSG and that lighting/DAP package. You might have a different experience due to you having a different model but in the end, I don't really see that those errors were a deal breaker for me when in 0.3 miles along a stop/start of the engine clears the codes you see. Also, my trip odometer went back to zero.

I been searching for the cause or I should say the cure. I did the same thing (disconnected battery for maybe 1 hour) I to change steering wheel. I too have a 2017 AT SEL with the same option package as you. I had all those warning lights come on too and when I started car and backed out of driveway then put in D all the lights went out except ACC warning and EPC. I pulled over after a few blocks and scrolled tru settings on my infotainment and couldn't clear/set anything TPM and the like.I drove about 2 mi to store when inside drove back home but stopped on my way checked settings TPM again and was able to set TPM this time...and ACC warning light and EPC is still on when I shut car off. The car has been sitting overnight. I haven't driven it again but I did turn ignition on (push button start didn't start car) and the lights are still on EPC & ACC. I've been stressed about this since and have spent all day searching and searching. Any suggestions? Did you have the EPC Light too? I've read the lights go out after driving (for an undetermined amount of time) and have also read I need to take in to a shop ASAP for the EPC. I know there's nothing broken that needs to be replaced it's all computer related the car was perfect until I disconnected battery. It didn't seem to be lacking power but I'm not a lead foot and only got up to about 40mph. I'm just worried about driving and having it crap out somewhere. I can't even get into a shop until after the new year.

When i Replaced the vw batery imedeately an ACC error appeared in my dashboard. What is wrong with my car and do I need to do?

vw passat adaptive cruise control not working

Try driving it around for a sec. My car shows the front assist error after I disconnect the battery. After I drive around it goes away. Sent from my LM-V450 using Tapatalk

I have this problem too, and am also observing that my obd2eleven won't light up for me to connect to it to look at the errors. Anyone ever resolve this issue?

Adaptive Cruise Control 1

Part of the iq.drive safety-enhancing and intelligent technologies.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) helps drivers maintain a constant speed and distance from the vehicle ahead using sensors to detect other vehicles .
The system can reduce speed of the vehicle if there is a slower moving vehicle ahead, bring the vehicle to a standstill, and resume speed regulation as long as the vehicle in front is moving again.

Maintain a safe distance

Assists with unintentional tailgating

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) feature allows drivers to maintain a constant speed while also keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead using sensors. This helps reduce the stress of constantly adjusting speed and distance, making the driving experience more comfortable.

CGI VW vehicle driving on highway.

Safety and confidence on the road

Adaptive responses for responsible driving

With the ability to slow down or bring the vehicle to a standstill in response to slower moving vehicles ahead, drivers can feel confident that they are driving safely and responsibly. This feature also ensures that drivers can easily resume speed regulation once the vehicle in front starts moving again, making the driving experience smoother and more enjoyable.

The ins and outs of  adaptive cruise control

How it works

Helps you maintain a preset speed and/or preset distance from the vehicle directly ahead. When dealing with traffic on the highway, it uses sensors to detect vehicles ahead of you, helping adjust your speed, and manages the distance between you and what’s in front of you.

Instructions

  • To engage the system, press the ON/OFF button on your steering wheel and then set your speed by accelerating to the desired speed and press the SET button.
  • To increase the set speed by the 1 mph, press the + button. If you press and hold the + button, the speed will increase continuously in 5 mph increments.
  • To decrease the set speed by the 1 mph, press the - button. If you press and hold the - button, the speed will decrease continuously in 5 mph increments.
  • To adjust the following distance from the vehicle in front of you, press the ACC button on your steering wheel. As you press the ACC button, you'll see a change in the number of solid bars in your digital cockpit. The more bars visible, the greater the following distance. You can make the same adjustments using the +/- buttons immediately after pressing the ACC button or in your infotainment screen.
  • To cancel, press the brake pedal or quickly press the cruise control button on the steering wheel.
  • To resume a previously stored speed, press the RES button on the steering wheel.
  • When you accelerate, the ACC function pauses and then resumes as soon as you stop accelerating.
  • Note that, in some conditions, select vehicles may come to a complete standstill. For example, if the vehicle ahead of you comes to a stop, your vehicle will also come to a stop. The stop and go feature is included on all model year 2024 vehicles . For previous generation models , see your owner’s manual for vehicle limitations.

Limitations

  • You must be driving above a minimum speed to activate the system. For some models the minimum speed is 15 mph; for others, it is 20 mph.
  • Only reacts to objects within the sensor’s line of sight; some vehicles such are not detected until they are within the sensor’s line of sight.
  • While all MY22 and newer vehicles can detect pedestrians, only some can detect cyclists. See your Owner’s Manual for your vehicle ’s limitations.
  • Once activated, system only operates between 0 and 95 mph.
  • The following situations can lead to unwanted braking:
  • Damage to or misalignment of sensors or sensor mounting.
  • Sensor blockage, which can be caused by ice/snow buildup, dirt, mud or leaves.
  • Towing heavy trailers or carrying heavy cargo in the rear of the vehicle , which can elevate the front of the vehicle and change sensor angles.
  • Curvature in the road.
  • The following situations can disable the system:
  • Damage to, misalignment of or blockage of the sensors.
  • Towing heavy trailers or carrying heavy cargo in the rear of the vehicle , which can elevate the front of the vehicle and change sensor angles.
  • Braking force is limited. If additional emergency braking is needed, Front Assist may intervene.

2022 Volkswagen Passat Owners Manual - Cruise control system

Cruise control system,  introduction.

The cruise control system helps to maintain a set speed.

Speed range

The CCS is available at speeds above 15 mph (20 km/h).

Driving with cruise control system

You can override the stored speed at any time, for example, to pass another vehicle. Cruise control is paused while the vehicle accelerates and then resumes the stored speed.

If the CCS is switched on, the instrument cluster display indicates the stored speed and the status of the CCS:

Driving downhill

The vehicle cannot maintain the saved speed in all driving situations. Always be ready to apply the brakes.

Downshift before traveling downhill for extended periods.

This will enable you to utilize the engine braking effect and reduce the load on the brakes.

vw passat adaptive cruise control not working

If it is not possible to drive safely with enough distance and a constant speed, using the CCS may cause accidents and serious injuries.

Never use the CCS when visibility is poor, when there is not enough distance, or when roads are steep, winding, flooded, or slippery, for example from snow, ice, moisture, or gravel.

Never use the CCS when driving off-road or on unpaved roads.

Always adapt your speed and remain a safe distance to vehicles driving ahead according to the visual, weather, road, and traffic conditions.

To reduce the risk of activating the CCS unintentionally, always turn off the cruise control system after using it.

It is dangerous to resume the stored speed if that speed is too fast for the current road, traffic, or weather conditions.

Operating the cruise control system

vw passat adaptive cruise control not working

Fig. 95 Left side of the multi-function steering wheel.

Switching on

No speed is saved. At this stage, the limiter will not yet start regulating your speed.

Starting the Cruise Control System

The CCS stores and controls the current speed.

Setting the speed

You can adjust the stored speed while the CCS is regulating the speed:

To change the stored speed continuously, press and hold the respective button.

The vehicle adjusts to the current speed by accelerating or decelerating. The vehicle does not brake actively.

Canceling Adaptive Cruise Control

Or: Press the brake pedal.

The vehicle speed remains stored in the system.

Resuming the Cruise Control System

The CCS resumes and maintains the stored speed.

Switching off

The CCS is switched off and the stored speed is deleted.

Troubleshooting

 cruise control system is malfunctioning.

Switch off CCS and seek assistance from suitably qualified professionals. Volkswagen recommends contacting your Volkswagen dealership.

Control is canceled automatically

The vehicle has exceeded the stored speed for an extended period.

The selector lever is not in the D or S selector lever position.

Brake assistance systems, for example ASR or ESC, are active.

The vehicle has been braked by Front Assist.

If the problem persists, switch off CCS and seek assistance from suitably qualified professionals. Volkswagen recommends contacting your Volkswagen dealership.

The specified fuel consumption and emission data are determined in accordance with the measurement procedures prescribed by law. 1 January 2022, the WLTP test cycle completely replaced the NEDC test cycle and therefore no NEDC values are available for new type approved vehicles after that date.

This information does not refer to a single vehicle and is not part of the offer but is only intended for comparison between different types of vehicles. Additional equipment and accessories (additional components, tyre formats, etc.) can alter relevant vehicle parameters such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, affecting the vehicle's fuel consumption, power consumption, CO 2 emissions and driving performance values in addition to weather and traffic conditions and individual driving behavior.

Due to more realistic testing conditions, fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions measured according to WLTP will in many cases be higher than the values measured according to NEDC. As a result, the taxation of vehicles may change accordingly as of 1 September 2018. For further information on the differences between WLTP and NEDC, please visit www.volkswagen.de/wltp .

Further information on official fuel consumption data and official specific CO 2 emissions for new passenger cars can be found in the "Guide to fuel economy, CO 2 emissions and power consumption for new passenger car models", which is available free of charge from all sales dealerships and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, D-73760 Ostfildern, Germany and at www.dat.de/co2 .

Your passat from USA? If you have a european passat with manual gear, coding for radar is 0010100 Yes i'm study SSP and read all about ACC from ELSA.

My Passat is from EU (in Germany was first owner). I will try coding for manual gear tomorrow and I tell you what happenned. Do you know what means ,,Follow to stop adaptation (activate/ deactivate)'' because on my car, this adaptation don't work?

Follow to stop is automaticaly braking to full stop, but this option support only radar RDW A. Radar RDW 1 not support front assist (channel 8 adaptation) and follow to stop (channel 9 adaptation), it doesn't have this channels in adaptation. My radar support follow to stop option, but my engine ECU not support this option. I know this option used in touareg and phaeton.

And your ABS 025 revision is backward compatible (is compatible with your 3C0-937-049).

May be, but ACC doesn't work. From 2009 year passat used ABS revision 025 (in ETKA i learn, revision 020 not compatible to replace by revision 025), new revision of radar, cental electric unit, gateway and parking brake unit. Now i have ABS revision 026, radar *567K and old other parts, such as central electric unit, instrument cluster and parking brake unit. May be needed special initialization process online from VW server.

I don’t understand, when your MFD show error message ,,ACC unavailable’’ why you don’t have any fault on VCDS (or VAS5954)?

I don't know.

When MFD show me "ACC Fault!" i have faults in engine and radar ECU. When MFD show me "ACC Not Available" no faults.

I think i have parking brake unit is incompatible with my new ABS. Because ABS unit revision 025 or newer used parking brake unt 3C8***. I have unit with number 3C0***J, this unit being used only in 2008. Parking brake unit, ABS unit and radar produced by TRW. May be i have internal incompatibility between units.

In my opinion, if your parking brake is incompatible with ABS module you must have a fault code. But, because parking brake is easy to replace, you can try the module from your friend car and is not necessary to buy this module until you are not sure about that.

Volkswagen badge on the front of a VW Golf car

VW owners claim ‘poor design’ left cars open to parts theft costing £1,600

Cruise control sensors taken by thieves, forcing drivers to pay to replace them or face higher insurance premiums

Volkswagen owners targeted by thieves who have stolen cruise control sensors from cars across London are furious after discovering the car’s “poor design” that makes them so easy to steal is set to cost them £1,600 each.

The sensors, which cost about £700 each, are fitted behind the VW badge, and appear to be a popular target for thieves.

A VW specialist in the Midlands said he had experienced a big jump in sensor thefts “in the last few months”, and in recent weeks, motorists across the capital have been reporting thefts on social media groups.

Tara O’Driscoll, from Clapham in south-west London, said she had fallen victim to the crime and had heard of more than 50 other reports of thefts in the borough since posting on social media about her experience. On some London roads, owners have reported that every VW car that features the sensor has had it taken.

She has been told it will cost about £1,600 to replace the sensor on what she described as her “very ordinary” VW Golf.

“Every VW car in our area that has this sensor has been targeted and it has been the talk of the community on WhatsApp and other media, not least as the bills to fix it are so big. It seems the part itself is expensive and only VW can calibrate it to work with your car,” she said.

“People face having to make expensive insurance claims which will only push up their premiums for years to come, or pay the £1,600 upfront.”

Rebecca Phillips, whose VW Passat has recently been targeted

The part is vital to the car’s adaptive cruise control (ACC) as it measures the distance to the vehicle in front, and adjusts the driving speed accordingly. However, it is easily accessible and is held in place by three screws.

VW owners first began reporting the theft of ACC sensors in 2016 , and some have been hit by a second theft after the first was replaced.

Owners are questioning why VW has not fixed this known problem. They now want VW to come up with a cost-effective solution – and an improved design to stop it happening again. The company has, so far, refused.

O’Driscoll said: “Given that it is clearly such a poor design, we feel that VW should be making a contribution – or at least doing the work at cost. If we have the work done, what’s to stop it being stolen again the next week?”

Rebecca Phillips, another Clapham resident whose VW Passat was similarly targeted recently, said she was furious that the manufacturer was not offering a cheaper solution.

“When we searched online, it soon became clear this has been happening for years,” she said. “There are videos showing how easy it is to steal these sensors, and yet nothing has been done. Our car is now beeping safety warnings at us and VW has told us not to drive it until it is repaired.”

A VW spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear about the issues being faced by this group of customers and we have advised them that this is, first and foremost, a matter all victims should discuss with local police. This does appear to be a localised crime issue and we are not aware of similar incidents happening elsewhere in the country.”

The company said it does not believe that this problem can be attributed to a design flaw or defect, and therefore it will not be offering any financial help to the owners.

It said that a missing radar sensor would not result in an MOT failure, as owners have feared.

“As this part is chassis-stamped, it can, once reported to us via the police, be locked so that it is inoperable on another vehicle – and as a result worthless on the black market,” the spokesperson said.

The VW sensors are the latest expensive car parts to be targeted by thieves. There have previously been similar spates of Land Rover headlight and hybrid car catalytic converter thefts.

Cruise Control Not Working

  • Add to quote

i have a 2004 passat and the cruise control has never worked since i have owned it (since last august). Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with it?

vw passat adaptive cruise control not working

Are the brake lights on all of the time? A bad brake light switch or even a bad ribbon wire in the stalk will kill the CC. I have had to replace the stalk twice in 5 years.

I had the cruise control stop working for about 100 miles on a road trip last Christmas. We were in stop and go construction on the interstate, and once we got out of it, the cruise wouldn't activate. Only after stopping for a restroom break did it work again. Weird, it's never happened before or since.

no the brake lights are not on all the time. How much and how easy is it to replace the stalk?

Stalk is less than $100 and is not too hard to replace. Pulling the airbag off is the hardest part, only because hitting the clips just right takes practice. It's been covered a few times but I don't know if there is a writeup in the Info Forum. Try the google search at the bottom of the page and it should turn up a few threads.

also sometimes my signal will blink really fast (like when you have a dead bulb) and then it will stop and not do it for awhile. Could this be due to a bad stalk which is probably why my cruise control is not working??

cc troubles i have a slightly different problem with my cc. It will work 20 times in a row and then not for 50 and so on. is this likely a stalk problem?

Does your horn work? If not check the fuse box. I'm not sure where exactly it is on your car, but on my 01 b5 its on the driver side dash when you open the door. Often with the cruise control other steering wheel components wont work if you have a blown fuse.

Yes the horn works perfectly fine. I checked all the fuses and they look fine.

On my '98, the cruise computer is a common problem, but I doubt that they use the same part in a 2004. I have also had my stalk replaced (although that was not the issue -- the shop didn't know about the cruise computer, I guess)... anyway, they replaced it was an offbrand aftermarket stalk. The thing was crap. It worked, but not well. It also creaked and seemed like it was going to snap when you used it. I highly recommend getting a real VW part if you replace the stalk. Also, if you are not used to working on airbag systems, don't do this repair yourself. You could cause the airbag to deploy and get hurt. Even most mechanics are weary of airbag related repairs, because it only takes one little spark in the wrong place to make the thing go off.

With the DBW changeover, the CC module was integrated into the ECU.
