Such is England’s reach on popular culture, you may think you already know the country before you visit.

Though if you’re expecting to be surrounded by a bunch of well-heeled James Bonds or a gaggle of eccentric Monty Python characters, then think again.

While the everyday English aren’t quite the same as how they’re portrayed in film, television and books, this is a country with a number of peculiarities that are good to know before visiting, especially when venturing outside of London . From practicalities like train prices to etiquette tips on how the English approach queueing, it’s always important to be ahead of the game when visiting this wonderful and varied country.

Here are a few key things to know before traveling to England.

People in coats hurry through the rain on an autumn day

1. You should pack a jacket, even in summer

Preparing for all types of weather is an essential part of the English experience. England’s maritime location in the wild North Atlantic means that even in summer , biting winds and untimely rain showers can unexpectedly scupper a balmy afternoon.

That doesn’t mean you need to take an umbrella everywhere, but you do need to put a jacket in your suitcase and always check the conditions on your favorite weather app before venturing out. As a rule, London is usually a couple of degrees warmer than other parts of the country.

2. Be ready to discuss the weather

Talking about the weather is in the English blood and a part of the national psyche. And the more lamentable the forecast, the more likely people are to talk about it. Come rain or shine, prepare to offer an opinion on the day’s weather, and express that it’ll hopefully brighten up/cool down as the week goes on.

3. Train prices are steep

Unlike some other countries in western Europe , England’s train system was privatized many years ago, and this, along with other factors, has lead to some of Europe’s highest train prices.

Try to book ahead of time (around 12 weeks before travel for the best rates) and look out for cheap advance fares. While not as quick as train travel (and certainly not as romantic), coaches such as National Express and Megabus offer far cheaper prices when traveling across the country and are highly recommended for those on a budget.

4. There’s a whole world outside of London

London’s big, bold, and full of iconic English landmarks and experiences . But it isn’t everything. If you have the time to explore beyond the capital, you’ll discover a variety of landscapes, people and cultures, and some wonderful things to do .

From the wild coastlines of Cornwall to the soaring hills of the Lake District , there’s much to see in this ancient land.

5. Crossing the English Channel means different plug sockets

Yes, England is in Europe, but it doesn’t always play by European rules (in more ways than one, with Brexit still something that people can't agree on seven years after the vote). If you’re backpacking around Europe, remember that the UK and Ireland use type G plug sockets (three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern), so make sure you have the right power adapter when arriving in England as it differs from the rest of the continent.

6. Many museums are free

England is home to many of the world’s greatest museums , and you won’t need to pay a penny to enter some of them. Especially great for rainy days in London, you can peruse dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum or masterpieces by Turner at the National Gallery and spend the money saved at the pub later on.

7. Pronouncing place names will be a challenge

Alongside some truly bizarre place names, England also has several towns and counties that aren’t pronounced the way they are spelled. Names with a -ter suffix are particularly notorious for this.

Bicester is pronounced biss-ter rather than bi-ces-ter, Gloucester is pronounced gloss-ter rather than glou-ces-ter, Leominster is pronounced lem-ster rather than Leo-minster. You get the picture.

8. Hit the beer garden when the sun comes out

The English need no excuse to go to the pub on a sunny summer afternoon, and sitting indoors is almost unthinkable. Find a table in the beer garden at the local boozer and order in a few cold pints. Job done.

9. Expect to hear a different accent in each region

Traveling just a few short miles in England can often mean a change in accent, so train your ears to prepare for this. Regional accents are hugely diverse, and while they’re still English, they can sometimes be difficult for even fellow England residents to understand.

The accent you’ll hear in Birmingham ("Brummie") differs wildly to what you’ll hear when you arrive in Newcastle ("Geordie"). London is a separate case as it’s so cosmopolitan that you can expect to hear a variety of different accents and languages throughout the day.

10. Never jump a queue

Sometimes polite to a fault, the English are very orderly when queueing, and those who jump a line can expect stern looks and grumbling at the very least. So get in line and patiently wait your turn to avoid any awkward situations.

11. You’ll hear "sorry" a lot

Even in situations where the fault lies with you, you might receive an apology. Only Canadians say sorry more than the English, so get used to hearing it and, eventually, saying it.

12. English food does not deserve its negative reputation

Stereotypes about the English are often amusing and sometimes painfully true, though the one about the poor standard of English food can be comfortably consigned to history’s trashcan.

Towns and cities across the country are now dotted with superb restaurants offering a strong emphasis on fresh and locally grown produce. Alongside traditional dishes , you’ll find cuisine here from all over the world amid an ever-growing list of Michelin-starred restaurants.

13. Beer standards are high too

The pub is a rite of passage here, and the English love a pint of beer. But England has grown out of its cruel 1970s caricature of warm stale beer, and these days, there are myriad styles to sample, up and down the country.

From real ales at historic Victorian pubs to craft beer at bright modern taprooms, choose from sours, stouts, saisons, New England IPAs and beyond.

14. Summer is festival season

From Glastonbury in June to Reading and Leeds in August and everything in between, there are lively music festivals running throughout the summer in England. No matter what week you’re here, there’s bound to be a festival on somewhere. Getting tickets for the big events is a challenge, though – you'll need to look out for those around nine months in advance.

There are also a plethora of smaller festivals that are often great value and easier to navigate too, such as Birmingham’s superb Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul Festival .

15. If you encounter any health issues, you’ll be in good hands

Visitors from EU countries will be covered for some treatment on the National Health Service (NHS) if they fall ill during a visit by using their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Visitors from non-EU countries with a reciprocal health care arrangement with the UK may also be covered for some treatment needs, particularly emergencies.

16. Measurements can be confusing

Don’t be surprised if you get into a metric muddle. For some things, the English use metric measurements, and for other things, they use imperial. Though metric measurements became legal in the UK back in 1875, Britain has never fully transitioned to using metrication in all situations. Roads are still measured in the imperial unit of miles, for example, and height is often discussed in feet and inches.

How to apply for a visitor visa to the UK for 6 months or less from Nigeria

Ngozi Ekugo

If you wish to apply for a visa to visit the United Kingdom, it is assumed that you are either travelling on holiday, to see family and friends, attend a business trip, a meeting or a short course of study.

You might be able to apply to stay for longer in certain circumstances, for example, to get medical treatment.

In any case, you should apply for a  Standard Visitor visa  to visit the UK for up to 6 months. If you have dependants who want to come to the UK with you, then each person will need to apply and pay separately.

There is so much ease in applying for visas as you can do so online as well as pay for the visa fees online.

It is important to note that the earliest you can apply is usually 3 months before your planned travel date for visitor visas.

However, you may be able to  pay for a faster decision on your visa application  depending on the type of visa you apply for, how you apply and where you are applying from.

Permitted activities under this visa:  Here are more details of what you can do under the Standard Visitor visa. You can come into the UK on that visa for:

  • tourism, for example on a holiday or vacation
  • to see your family or friends
  • to volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity
  • to pass through the UK to another country (‘in transit’)
  • for  certain business activities , for example, attending a meeting or interview
  • to take part in a school exchange programme
  • to do a recreational course of up to 30 days, for example, a dance course
  • To study, do a placement or take an exam
  • As an academic, senior doctor or dentist
  • For medical reasons

However, you cannot:

  • do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person
  • claim public funds (benefits)
  • live in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits
  • marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership

Applying on behalf of someone else:  You may have loved ones who are elderly, a child, someone in an overseas location or one who is less internet-savvy and would like to visit the UK.

Fortunately, you can apply for a visa on their behalf. To do this, you need to get permission from the person directly or written permission from their parent or guardian if the applicant is under 18.

You would need to enter the applicant’s details into the form, not your own.

If you’re coming to the UK for less than 6 months which is normally the case for visitor visas, you or the person you are applying for does not need to have a TB test done for the application.

Prove your identity:  When you apply, you’ll need to prove your identity and provide documents to show your eligibility.

  • How you do this depends on where you’re from and what type of passport you have.
  • You’ll either have to go to an appointment at a visa application centre or use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ smartphone app

Application centres:  Visa application centres are the most common with centres in different parts of the country. At some centres In  Lagos  and  Abuja , you can book an appointment to provide your biometric information (your fingerprints and photograph).

You can choose to use a standard service or to pay extra for optional services. Paying for optional services does not mean your application is more likely to be successful.

Children under 16 must go to the appointment with an adult who is over 18 while children under 5 must attend the appointment to have a photograph taken. They do not need to give their fingerprints.

Let’s talk visa fees:  There is a  fee for each visa  which depends on which visa you apply for.

The fees are the same for each family member who applies to come to the UK with you.

A Standard Visitor visa costs £100 for up to 6 months. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel. If you plan to stay longer, however, the fees are different. You can find a full breakdown  here.

How to apply:  To start applying, visit this direct  link  and ensure you have all your documents ready for uploading.

Change or cancel your application:  If you want to change something in your application after you’ve sent it  contact UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) .

You can ask to  cancel your application . Your fee will only be refunded if UKVI has not started processing your application.

Visiting England for the first time: 14 things to know before your visit

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: October 16, 2022

If you are planning a visit to England you may have loads of questions about what to expect when you arrive! Some of the most common questions we receive from our newsletter subscribers or UK Facebook planning group members revolve around etiquette and how to navigate some of the ‘hidden rules’ and quirks of English culture.

So if you are wondering what things should you do (or not do) when you are visiting England for the first time we have (with the help of members of our Facebook community ) put together some tips to ensure you have the best time and avoid any faux pas along the way.

  • Don't push in (queue jump) or invade personal space
  • Don't stand on the left side on escalators

Please learn the difference between the UK, Great Britain and England

  • We don't all speak like the Queen (or know her!)

Some English place names are not pronounced the way you may expect

Tipping is generally voluntary (tip 10% for good service), what to do when you need to spend a penny, enjoy england (quirks and all), prepare for the english weather (expect the unexpected) and to become as obsessed as we are about it.

  • Don't underestimate the English love of tea
  • Don't talk too loudly in restaurants or on public transport
  • Don't say we drive on the wrong side of the road!!!

Prepare for 2 taps in your sink!

  • Don't try to see everything in one visit (you can't)

Enjoy your visit to England (and the rest of the UK)

14 things to know when visiting England for the first time

14 things to know when visiting England for the first time

Don’t push in (queue jump) or invade personal space.

Sign saying queues ahead and images of people in a queue.

We English like our personal space so it is very important to not push into that bubble. If we need to squeeze past someone we will always say “excuse me” as we pass. This is the polite way of asking permission before you attempt to move through.

We also have a strong queue culture – we like to form queues and wait for our turn patiently. We are not fans of pushy people who push in front!

You may not be told explicitly to get to the back of the queue (we are generally too polite to actually tell you) but expect a LOT of tutting and ‘looks’ in your direction from the people you pushed in front of!

Don’t stand on the left side on escalators

London escalators in the Underground when visiting England stick to the right.

When you are travelling on London Underground escalators always stand on the right. If you stand on the left you will find a lot of unimpressed people trying to get past you.

If possible we recommend that you avoid travelling during rush hour periods (and definitely before 9.30 am and after 4.00 pm) on weekdays.

Good to know – Push the button to open train doors as they don’t open automatically.

Flags of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and a map of the UK.

It might be useful to learn this!

  • Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales.
  • The United Kingdom is Great Britain plus Northern Ireland.
  • England is not the same as Britain.
  • Scotland is not England. In Scotland, the people are Scots or Scottish. In Wales the people are Welsh.
  • In England the people are English. You can call us Brits too. In Wales or Scotland use the terms above!

We don’t all speak like the Queen (or know her!)

Each region of England has their own accent and you may hear many accents as you travel around England. Some are easier to understand than others (and some are easier on the ear shall we say)

Do not expect many people to speak like the Queen. She speaks a form of English called Received Pronunciation which is considered the poshest by us commoners. It is also an indication of someone from the upper classes who probably attended boarding school and was raised by nannies (no stereotyping intended Boris)

There are some nicknames for people from the different areas which you may hear too:

  • Geordie – Northern England specifically the North East (Tyneside and Northumberland)
  • Mackem – North East (Sunderland and surrounding areas)
  • Scouser – Liverpool and surrounding area
  • Mancunian – Manchester
  • Cockney – East End of London
  • Brummie – Birmingham

If you spend enough time in England you will learn to recognise the different accents. Just don’t try to copy them – it is not that easy!

UK map under a magnifying glass.

This follows on nicely to the point about regional accents as you may discover some place names are not pronounced as you may expect.

  • Torquay – Tor/key
  • Loughborough – Luff/burrah (I have heard this pronounced as Loo/ga/broo/gah)
  • Alnwick – Ann/ick (don’t pronounce the ‘w’)
  • Bicester – Bister
  • Plymouth – Plim/uth
  • Stroud – Strowd
  • Morecombe – Mork/um
  • Berwick – Ber/ick (don’t pronounce the ‘w’)
  • and my personal favourite ….. Leicester – L/ester (as in J/ester and not Lie/cess/ter)

Whilst tipping is not expected in England it is always appreciated!

If you want to leave a tip for good service in a restaurant a 10% – 15% tip is generally the rule of thumb. Sometimes you will find that a service fee has already been added. If this is the case a tip will not be expected.

If you are taking a London cab just round up the fare as appropriate depending on the length of your journey.

If the baggage is taken to your room by a hotel porter we recommend a tip of £2.

London toilet in Chelsea with a WC sign.

If you are out and about in England and need the loo you may be wondering how to find a public toilet.

You will find public toilets in shopping centres, department stores, train stations and good old Macdonalds! There are some great apps available which you can use to find the location of the nearest public toilet and I have recently come across the Flush app which gives details including opening hours/cost plus directions of the nearest loo.

Morris dancers in England.

Embrace (and expect) England to be different to where you come from. Don’t go looking for the familiar but embrace the food, culture and opportunities to explore the country.

Don’t spend your entire holiday in London. Get out and about and see attractions in other parts of the country. There are so many places to visit and areas of outstanding natural beauty in England such as the Lake District National Park and the Cotswolds .

England is also filled with places of interest to history buffs (including the odd castle or two) stately homes, historic cities such as Bath (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site)and York , seaside towns and quaint villages . And as you explore don’t forget some unique English experiences such as enjoying a pint in an English pub, a hike through the countryside, an English football match (NOT soccer) or a fish and chip supper!

Enjoy random opportunities and places to visit as you travel.

While I love the nation’s capital and understand the interest in seeing famous sights and landmarks such as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace a few days in London does not mean you have seen England.

A rainy London street.

You will need a coat/jacket whatever the time of year . If you are visiting in winter it may snow (this is more likely the further north you go) Don’t discount visiting the UK in winter – it’s low season (outside of Christmas and New Year) and places are quieter.

England is not the sunniest country in the world and compared to many countries we have a relatively short summer.

Summer weather tends to be pretty unpredictable so again, just keep an eye on any local forecasts or news bulletins.

Pack plenty of jumpers/cardigans and a pair of comfortable walking shoes!

We love the rain but our summers tend to be pretty unpredictable so just keep an eye on local weather forecasts etc. If it does start raining you will need your waterproofs! Unsure what to pack? Check out our packing list.

Don’t underestimate the English love of tea

Tea and teapot with sandwiches and cakes.

Sorry all you coffee lovers but we English really do love our tea (well this one does anyway!)

If you order tea expect it to come with milk and sugar (which you can add). In a posh establishment (all of you planning afternoon tea in London) expect a teapot, tea leaves and a strainer! And a large choice of different teas!

I don’t drink coffee but I gather you may struggle to get a decent cup in England (or so my Aussie friends tell me)

Don’t talk too loudly in restaurants or on public transport

Woman shouting through a funnel.

I cannot say this enough – the English are not loud! We are very aware of being respectful to others around us.

Do not talk loudly on public transport like trains, tubes or buses. This is considered quite rude and may result in stares and tuts especially if you are in a designated quiet zone!

Don’t say we drive on the wrong side of the road!!!

Aerial view of a UK roundabout.

Because actually, YOU do!!! Hahahahaha – only kidding – just remember the driver’s seat is on the other side of the road when you jump in your hire car.

There are a LOT of cars crammed on England’s roads so don’t be surprised at just how busy they can be. Or just how narrow the roads are. Compared to the wide streets I have driven on in Australia or North America English roads are very narrow.

If you are planning to hire a car we recommend that you read our guide to renting (and driving) a car in the UK .

Good to know – If you are used to driving on the wrong side of the road (ie the right😉) you will instinctively look the wrong way when attempting to cross the street. Remember to look right (in fact, look both ways and double-check before crossing!)

Taps in a sink

Yes so for some reason water rarely comes out of one central tap in England (and in fact the UK). Nope, it comes out of a cold tap and a hot tap. So be prepared to freeze or be scalded.

There are a few historical reasons for this that I won’t bore you with but at least you will not be surprised when you come across 2 taps!

Don’t try to see everything in one visit (you can’t)

England in a suitcase

Although you may really really want to see it all you can’t. We have spent decades in the UK and we still haven’t seen everything! (I still have quite a bucket list for London never mind England!)

It may be tempting to plan lots of places to visit in England and numerous tourist attractions on your first trip but you will end up exhausted and potentially not enjoying any of it.

If you are struggling to put together your itinerary and feeling overwhelmed with the entire process why not take our 5-step itinerary planning challenge which will help you put together a draft itinerary.

If you still need help or simply want to chat it through we us we do offer an itinerary review service. Find out more about our itinerary review service here !

Overview of the UK Family Visa for Nigerians

A Family Visa is for individuals and families who are not able to live together in the UK but have strong reasons to do so.

The main purpose of a UK Family Visa is to reunite families who have been separated due to immigration, travel, or other life circumstances.

A Family Visa UK allows people to work and study in the country once they arrive. The visas are issued for 5 years and can be renewed when they expire.

Who Is Eligible for a UK Family Visa?

To determine eligibility for a Family Visa, the following are some of the criteria to assess whether or not an individual is eligible.

  • Resident family members of British citizens or settled status in the UK
  • Family members of non-EEA nationals who are legal residents in the UK
  • Family members of EEA nationals

To be eligible for a UK Family Visa, it is necessary that you:

  • Reside in the country from which you are applying
  • Be related to the sponsor through marriage (husband, wife, or civil partner), blood relationship (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild), or adoption, and must be able to prove this through birth certificates or adoption papers
  • Carry out your main source of financial support in your own country

If you are related to a British citizen or that person’s spouse and do not meet all the eligibility requirements, you may still be able to come to the UK with another type of visa.

What Are the Types of UK Family Visas?

The UK government offers many immigration visa options for families of British citizens and permanent residents.

The first step to obtaining a Family Visa UK is applying. Once your application has been approved, you will receive a letter of approval with instructions.

For most visas, you must apply from outside the UK and show that you meet the Family Visa requirements for the visa type you apply for. Each category has rules about who can be able to apply for it and how old applicants must be.

Spouse Visa

If you are married to a British citizen or someone who has been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK, you can apply for this visa.

You must be able to prove that the marriage is genuine. A  UK Spouse Visa  may lead to citizenship in some cases.

This type of visa allows the holder to work, and holders can apply to bring their children over on Dependent Visas.

The Spouse Visa application process has four stages:

  • Submit documents needed to apply for a visa along with your passport
  • Make an appointment at the British Embassy or Consulate in Nigeria to submit your application and pay your fees
  • Attend an interview where you will be asked questions regarding your relationship with your sponsor in the UK
  • Collect your visa and other required documents that allow you to enter the UK

Parent Visa

The UK Parent Visa is designed to allow parents to come to the UK to be with their families.

This visa will also allow a parent of a British citizen or a person who is settled in the UK to live in the country.

To be issued a Parent Visa, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have an eligible child living in the UK
  • Provide proof of your relationship with that child
  • Meet the English language requirements
  • Meet other requirements related to your status, such as having enough money to support yourself and other dependents

Child Dependent Visa

To obtain a UK Child Dependent Visa, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be born outside the UK or have been adopted by a UK citizen or settled person
  • Be able to prove your relationship with the child, who must be under 18 years old
  • Show proof of your child’s citizenship
  • Demonstrate that you have adequate financial resources to support yourself and your child without depending on public funds

Adult Dependent Visa

The main rule for qualifying for an Adult-Dependent Relative Visa is having a sponsor living in the UK who has made an offer of support.

This person will be your legal sponsor, providing you with temporary accommodation and financial aid while living in the UK.

To be eligible for an Adult-Dependent Visa, you must:

  • Be sponsored by a British citizen
  • Have your main place of residence in the UK
  • Be financially dependent on your sponsor
  • Do not have another person who is sponsoring you

To apply for a UK Adult Dependent Visa, you must pass a points-based assessment that evaluates your eligibility.

Contact us to speak to an immigration specialist who can advise you on your suitability for this visa.

UK Ancestry Visa

The UK has a special visa category for people with a UK-born grandparent or UK-born parent.  The Ancestry Visa is a UK immigration category that enables Nigerians to live and work in the UK.

If you hold citizenship in the Commonwealth, British overseas, or British national (overseas) territories or are a citizen of Zimbabwe, you are eligible to apply for a UK Ancestry Visa.

To qualify for this visa, you must also:

  • Have at least one UK-born grandparent or a UK-born parent
  • You must be 18 or older at the time of application.
  • Be able to prove this through original birth or adoption certificates and parentage tests if available (see application process below)
  • Hold an indefinite leave to remain in your country of residence (or have already been granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK)
  • Intend to visit the UK within three months of applying for this visa

UK PBS Dependent Visa

The  UK PBS Dependent Visa  is for the spouse or partner of a person living and working legally in the UK.

It allows the spouse or proposed civil partner to live and work in the UK for up to five years.

The UK PBS Dependent Visa is only open to those who are not European Economic Area (EEA) nationals and who are married to or in a civil partnership with an EEA national under the EU settlement scheme.

The basic requirements for obtaining a UK PBS Dependent Visa include:

  • Being married to or in a civil partnership with an EEA national living and working legally in the UK
  • Be a child of a parent with UK permanent residency or citizenship
  • Providing evidence of this relationship, such as a marriage certificate or birth certificate
  • Providing proof that the main applicant has sufficient means to support themselves, as well as their dependents

We can help you obtain the right family visa to move to the UK.

Financial Requirements for Family Visas

The financial requirements for Family Visas depend on the type of visa you are applying for.

The UK’s Home Office has published guidelines explaining the sources of income and minimum income thresholds required for different Family Visa categories.

The guidelines explain how applicants can prove their ability to maintain themselves financially in the UK.

As a single applicant, the minimal salary threshold is set at £18,600, and with a child, this increases by £3,800. Any additional children require an extra £2,400 each. It is possible to use savings rather than income to meet the financial criteria.

English Language Requirements

Generally, it is a requirement that you have at least basic English language skills when applying for a Family visa.

An exemption from taking the test is available for those over 65 or those with a physical condition that prevents them from meeting the requirements.

Nationals of the majority of English-speaking countries are also exempt.

You will need to provide proof of your English language skills by taking an academic qualification or passing an approved test if you do not fall into any of these categories.

Academic Qualifications and Proof of English Proficiency

To meet these requirements, applicants will usually need one of the following:

  • Proof of English Proficiency –  A qualification at Level A1 in the English language on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
  • Academic Qualifications  –  An academic qualification taught in English, a qualification at a higher standard than GCSE (or equivalent), or evidence that they have completed an extended period of study in an English-speaking country

Accommodation Requirements

The applicant is required to demonstrate that accommodation is available for them and any dependents for the entire duration of their visa.

This means that if you are applying as a spouse or proposed civil partner, your sponsor must be able to provide proper housing or have proof of a lease agreement on suitable housing.

If you are a parent or child seeking residence in the UK, your sponsor should be able to provide proof of tenancy agreement or ownership.

For now, the application costs for Spouse, Child, and Parent Visa categories are £1,538 for outside the UK application and £1,048 if you apply in the UK.

Your dependents will pay the Immigration Healthcare Surcharge as part of their application.

For adult applicants, this will be equivalent to £624 a year. For those under 18 years old, it is £470.

UK Family Visa Processing Time

The visa Processing times can vary according to the type of visa you apply for, the applicant’s country of origin, and other factors.

However, it is vital to understand that many factors determine how long an application will take.

A Family application can take up to 24 weeks if it is submitted from Nigeria.

It usually takes about 8 weeks for a visa to be processed if you apply from inside the UK.

To get expedited visa processing, you can use the priority or super-priority service. This will cost extra.

Reasons Why a Family Visa Might Be Rejected

When applying for a Family Visa, it is essential to ensure that you fill out the application with the utmost detail and attention to factual accuracy.

The main reason for an application being rejected is insufficient evidence or documentation to prove the case.

Some common reasons for a visa being rejected include:

  • The applicant does not meet the minimum income requirements for the Family Visa category they apply for
  • The applicants do not provide documentation that proves their relationship is genuine and subsisting (e.g. marriage certificate)
  • Applicants do not provide accurate information about the reason for their visit
  • You did not support the application with your sponsor’s original documents

Appealing a Family Visa Decision

In case your Family Visa application is rejected, you have the option to appeal the decision.

If possible, you will need to be able to show that there is new evidence available before submitting the appeal application.

The appeal process is more involved than the initial application so you may wish to seek legal advice to help ensure you have a successful outcome.

UK changes travel rules for travellers from Nigeria to England

Fully vaccinated travellers from Nigeria will now be able to visit England without needing to take multiple COVID-19 tests or self isolate.

visit uk nairaland

From Monday, 11 October 2021, fully vaccinated travellers from Nigeria will be able to visit England without needing to provide a pre-departure test, undertake a day 8 test or self-isolate for 10 days, although will still need to book and pay for a day 2 test. This policy applies to those fully vaccinated with AstraZeneca (including Covidshield), Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen (Johnson and Johnson).

Fully vaccinated means that you have had a complete course of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before you arrive in England. The day you had your final dose does not count as one of the 14 days. You must be able to prove that you have been fully vaccinated under a vaccination programme and have a valid proof of vaccination recognised by the British Government. For Nigeria, the certificates with valid QR codes as issued by Nigeria’s National Primary Health Care Development Agency are recognised.

If you are not a fully vaccinated traveller from Nigeria to England, you must:

  • take a pre-departure COVID-19 test – to be taken in the 3 days before travel
  • book and pay for day 2 and day 8 COVID-19 tests – to be taken after arrival
  • complete a passenger locator form – any time in the 48 hours before arrival

After you arrive, you must:

  • quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days
  • take a pre-booked COVID-19 test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8

Acting British High Commissioner, Ben Llewellyn-Jones, said:

The exemption of fully-vaccinated Nigerians travelling to the UK from providing a pre-departure test and self-isolating for 10 days, is a very welcome development. To make this happen, we have been working closely with Nigeria’s National Primary Health Care Development Agency on recognising Nigeria’s vaccine certification, which we have now done. The UK remains committed to opening up international travel and enabling those who wish to enter the UK, to do so safely. Vaccines work and – as the pandemic has shown – no one is safe until we are all safe. I would encourage all eligible people to get vaccinated.

At A Glance

  • London is notoriously expensive. It's easily the cheapest city to fly into, but once you arrive you'll find your money quickly disappears. If you're hoping to keep costs down, spend more time in the other areas around the United Kingdom and less time in London. In the more rural communities you'll find that your expenses are far less.
  • The countries that make up the United Kingdom each have their own set of bank holidays. Look at a calender before you schedule your trip to make sure that your vacation does not overlap any of these bank holidays. If it does, you will find that prices are higher and attractions are more crowded.
  • There are many discount airlines that fly into and out of London and the United Kingdom. If you book tickets through one of these airlines, make sure that you understand all of the restrictions as well as what's included in the price. Some flights fly into inconvenient airports as well, so confirm that there are transportation connections available to where you need to go.
  • If you're traveling by train, there are usually discounts available for children or groups. Also, there are regional railcards available if you plan to take several different trips within the area. Research all of the restrictions on these cards prior to purchasing them. If you do decide to buy single tickets, it is best to buy them in advance when the prices are often lower. Great Britain is an area where you will benefit from having a set schedule and itinerary in advance of your trip.
  • There are several different bus companies available throughout the country. The buses are usually of high quality and they generally run on schedule. The more popular bus companies include National Express, Megabus, CityLink, and Dot2Dot. Some companies are focused on specific regions, while other serve the entire country. Some companies are also notoriously cheaper than others.

With the transfer season essentially over, Mark Pope has turned his attention to the high school recruiting trail.

This week is a busy one in Lexington, highlighted by an unofficial visit from 4-star guard Acaden Lewis beginning Monday.

During the visit, Lewis announced a scholarship offer from the Kentucky Wildcats .

After a great talk on my visit with Coach Pope and staff, I’m blessed to receive an offer from The University of Kentucky #GoCats pic.twitter.com/xSfbbGX6Vx — Acaden Lewis (@AcadenLewis) June 17, 2024

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Lewis plays for Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC. He’s a consensus top-100 recruit ranked as high as 55th overall in the class of 2025 by Rivals, where he’s listed as a shooting guard. That’s the position ESPN has him at, while 247 Sports tabbed him a combo guard, and On3 lists him as a point guard.

Lewis may not be a top-50 recruit, but he’s been having a great summer, leading to recent offers from the UConn Huskies, North Carolina Tar Heels , Alabama Crimson Tide , and Tennessee Volunteers .

It appears Lewis is now very much in play to be one of Pope’s first high school commits in the class of 2025.

Harry looking into the distance, Meghan Markle crying split pic

Meghan Markle won’t ‘visit the UK unless two things happen’, says expert

Meghan Markle won’t consider visiting Prince Harry’s homeland unless two conditions are met, it’s been claimed by a royal expert.

The Duchess of Sussex hasn’t visited the UK with Prince Harry since September 2022, when Queen Elizabeth II passed away. Meghan Markle and the Duke were in the country to attend the WellChild Awards, and it wasn’t necessarily a family visit, but happened to be in the country when the monarch died, luckily. They extended their trip to follow the royals ‘ mourning period and to attend the funeral. However, the former TV star hasn’t stepped foot back on British soil in an official capacity since – although she did have a layover once when she was jet-setting somewhere else. Last month, the 42-year-old landed at Heathrow on the way to Nigeria from Los Angeles, but chose to not step outside the airport. Instead, she waited for Harry to join her, and the duo traveled on a night flight to the African country. Now, a royal expert says Meghan Markle won’t come back to the UK unless her two conditions are met.

Meghan Markle’s ‘two conditions’ Harry has to meet for her to visit the UK

Britain's Prince Harry (L), Duke of Sussex, and Britain's Meghan (R), Duchess of Sussex, arrive at the Lightway Academy in Abuja on May 10, 2024 as...

It’s been claimed the Suits actress only wants to come back if the couple have their own permanent residence in the country, and if they have security to the level she deems appropriate.

The couple haven’t had their own pad in Britain since they officially vacated Frogmore Cottage last year, at King Charles’ request.

Although they stepped down as senior royals in 2020, they made their leave from The Firm permanent the following year, after the late Queen told them they can’t continue with a ‘half-in/half-out’ approach to representing the monarchy.

  • UNBELIEVABLE : Meghan Markle fans rush to her defense as critic claims she wants to ‘destroy the royals’

When they moved into their Montecito mansion that summer, Prince Harry’s cousin Eugenie and her family moved into their Frogmore Cottage for a spell. Although it has a humble name, it is by all means not quaint, instead a sprawling estate worth millions.

Tom Quinn, royal commentator, told The Mirror, that the Duke of Sussex is missing his old life and friends and they don’t ‘get on’ with his wife, and he’d like a place to settle roots back home.

He said: “He [Harry] misses his Old Etonian and army friends, many of whom have not visited as they don’t get on with Meghan.

“As time goes by, Harry misses some aspects of his old life in the UK. Inevitably, the honeymoon period where everything in the States is new and exciting is coming to an end, and Harry is looking back at the past through rose-tinted spectacles.”

Aside from reports King Charles’ wishing to see his grandchildren more , Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet haven’t been able to bond with their cousins, either.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle only brought little Lilibet once to his homeland, and while Archie was born in the UK, they left before he turned one year old, so he’s likely not going to remember much.

Therefore, their two children haven’t spent time with Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children – their only first cousins. Prince George, Louis and Princess Charlotte.

Quinn added: “Meghan has said she’s only prepared to return to England if she and Harry have a place of their own and the security they both feel is essential. Meghan will never return to the UK and stay with her husband‘s relatives.

“If the couple manage to find a permanent home and sort out the security issue they will certainly want to bring their children to the UK but it’s going to take a lot of diplomacy to get to the point where Archie and Lili are able to develop a genuine and warm relationship with their cousins George, Charlotte and Louis.”

Major heat wave to hit Midwest and East Coast, bringing heat alerts to 66 million

The summer is coming in hot: As Thursday's solstice approaches, a heat wave is hitting the East Coast and the Midwest and is expected to last through at least Friday.

Almost 66 million people across the U.S. were under some level of heat alert Monday afternoon. About 150 million people will experience temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday, and readings could rise over 100 degrees for around 9 million people.

Heat warnings, watches or advisories were in effect from Iowa to Maine, affecting Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, New York and other cities.

“The duration of this heat wave is notable and potentially the longest experienced in decades for some locations,” the Weather Prediction Center said Sunday .

A boy cools off at a fountain during in Chicago.

A strong heat dome is causing the extreme conditions. Temperatures could reach as high as 25 degrees above normal in many areas. Records could be set in 200 cities from the Ohio Valley and the lower Great Lakes into the northern mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS' Phoenix branch said temperatures reached 112 degrees there Sunday — 7 degrees above average and just under the record of 115.

The Nevada Division of Emergency Management warned residents not to rely on fans to stay cool and urged them instead to seek air-conditioned spaces such as libraries, shopping malls or the cooling centers that have been opened across the Southwest in recent weeks.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul activated 50 members of the National Guard to help boost the state's response. New York City’s more than 500 cooling centers are set to open Tuesday .

"We are going to be seeing temperatures at levels we have not seen in our lifetimes," Hochul said in a statement Monday , adding: "This could be a deadly event. Extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths."

Indeed, deaths from extreme heat have increased in recent years. About 2,300 people in the U.S. died from extreme heat last year.

Public school systems in at least two states have adjusted their hours. Schools in Worcester, Massachusetts, will end the school year a few days early. And schools in Buffalo and Rochester, New York, implemented half-days for the rest of week to allow pre-K through eighth graders to leave after lunch.

Some parts of the U.S. are also expected to get heavy rain this week. In the Dakotas and Minnesota, the NWS said, there is a chance of flash flooding and severe thunderstorms . Rain is pushing in from the Gulf of Mexico, as well, and it is expected to hit parts of Texas and Louisiana, possibly through Wednesday.

Research predicts more frequent and extreme weather events as climate change’s effects continue to intensify . Each of the last 12 months set a record for high temperatures, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service .

Paul will bring his acclaimed Got Back tour to Europe this December!

Fulfilling his promise to 'get back', Paul will return to France, Spain and the UK with his Got Back  tour. Earlier this month, Paul announced his first live shows of 2024 with the next leg of the tour launching in South America this October.

With songs like ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Live and Let Die’, ‘Band on the Run’,  ‘Let It Be’ and so many more, the Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show: hours of the greatest moments from the last 60 years of music – dozens of songs from Paul’s solo, Wings and of course Beatles catalogues that have formed the soundtracks of our lives.

This will mark Paul’s first European show since his iconic Glastonbury headlining performance in 2022. Hailed as “one of the greatest gigs of all time” by The Times and “a masterclass from the greatest living cultural figure in this country’s history” by The i, it was also Paul and his band’s 500th show together! These dates will see McCartney return for his first live performance in Paris in six years - in 2018 he played at La Defense Arena, where he is making his return. The wait has been longer for Spaniards, where he last played eight years ago, in 2016 at Estadio Vincente Calderon.

Paul launched his Got Back tour in 2022, completing 16 huge shows across the US before performing his history-making set at Glastonbury in June 2022. In 2023 Paul performed 18 incredible shows as the Got Back tour rocked through Australia, Mexico and Brazil.
