Avenge and revenge , once close synonyms, are now far apart in meaning. To avenge is to visit some offense with punishment, in order to vindicate the righteous, or to uphold and illustrate the right by the suffering or destruction of the wicked. "And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian," Acts vii, 24. To revenge is to inflict harm or suffering upon another through personal anger and resentment at something done to ourselves. Avenge is unselfish; revenge is selfish. Revenge , according to present usage, could not be said of God. To retaliate may be necessary for self-defense, without the idea of revenge . Compare REVENGE.

Synonyms: avenge , punish , retaliate , revenge , vindicate

Preposition: Avenge on or upon (rarely, avenge oneself of ) a wrong-doer.

Here's Your May Horoscope

Better days lie ahead.

Here's every zodiac sign's horoscope for May 2024, according to astrologer Alexandria Lettman.

Change is circulating in the atmosphere. Pluto turns retrograde on May 2, instigating a subtle nudge to explore your unique understanding of prevalent social issues and world problems. Finding your voice may lead to breakdowns in your community ties and networks.

Better days lie ahead as the practical new moon in Taurus irons out promising new beginnings on May 7. New material desires, financial goals, and romantic aspirations are on your mind — all of which require updated patterns and routines to sustain steady progress. When perspective-ruling Mercury strides into stubborn Taurus on May 15, avoid battling with people who are stuck in their ways.

Tensions will clear as cheerful Gemini season boosts social morale with its quick-witted, lighthearted, free-spirited energy on May 20. Lucky and aspirational endings are in sight — mark your calendar for May 23 when the optimistic full Moon in Sagittarius aligns to restore your faith in the bigger picture. Meanwhile, Venus is on the move, stimulating your flirtatious side as it whirls into chatty Gemini on the same day.

Finally, on May 25, Jupiter’s grand entrance into extroverted Gemini signifies one of the biggest turning points of the year. Engage in small talk, but do not allow your intense enthusiasm and curiosity to cause you to cross boundaries. Every experience could become a great story to tell in the future. Live in the moment.

Happy birthday, Gemini!

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Here's Aries' horoscope for May 2024.

In May, avoid taking shortcuts to reach your goals. Fine-tuning your budgets and routines will fill you with confidence and secure your financial future. Broaden your horizons and discover the hidden gems in your local neighborhood. For example, visiting the bustling café you pass on your daily commute could lead to new friends and stimulating conversations that widen your perspective and life philosophy.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Here's Taurus' horoscope for May 2024.

Being true to yourself is easier said than done. Communicate honestly when faced with smaller life decisions and the bigger situations won’t feel so daunting. Have fun in May, but don’t lose sight of your finances. Tending to your primary needs and nourishing yourself takes priority over additional comforts and luxuries. Clearing a debt or receiving rewards for your hard work will put a twinkle in your eye. Loosen up in the wake of positive life experiences that remind you that you’re doing far better than you realize.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Here's Gemini's horoscope for May 2024.

You will find deep satisfaction in cheering on your friends as they pursue their goals. Don’t struggle in silence and deny them the opportunity to return the favor. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Here's Virgo's horoscope for May 2024.

Instead, listen to how they understand and interact with the world. A wealth of wisdom exists beyond your perception; maintain a flexible, inviting, open, and optimistic attitude to gain access. When lucky Jupiter in Gemini begins to spotlight your career on May 25, your manifestations will receive a touch of magic. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Here's Sagittarius' horoscope for May 2024.

Prioritize your wellbeing and protect it from the pressure of your responsibilities. The people who value you will not be dissatisfied with your decision to take care of your health. The deeper you know yourself, the more natural you will feel when communicating your needs. With Venus and Jupiter expanding your interpersonal connections from May 25, prepare to open your heart and build new relationships and alliances. Remember, there are opportunities to learn about yourself in every interaction.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Here's Capricorn's horoscope for May 2024.

What’s the point in hustling hard if you don’t take time to enjoy the fruits of your labor? This May, indulge in experiences that remind you what a pleasure it is to be alive. Treat yourself. Make time to visit your favorite places. Wear the clothes you reserved for a special occasion. Your dating life will improve as you become better at treating yourself with love and care. As you make friends wherever you go, you will acquire knowledge, skills, and experiences that set you apart in your workplace.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Here's Aquarius' horoscope for May 2024.

Forcing yourself to be active when your body is tired is counterproductive. The inspiration you seek will flow in when you take the early days of the month to hibernate. When your energy and enthusiasm trickle back in, get more involved with creative projects, side hustles, and hobbies that fill you with joy. Sudden breakthroughs under the Sagittarius full moon on May 23 will precede positive transformations in your dating life. Pay attention to charming strangers who enter your life or opportunities to take your existing relationship to the next level.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Here's Pisces' horoscope for May 2024.

There’s a time and place to get creative with new theories, but this month asks you to focus on what works. Stick to methods and plans that are tried and tested to save yourself time and avoid frustrations. If you do not rest in between tasks, you will feel mentally scattered and restless when Gemini season arrives on May 20. Tend to your work/life balance, and you will end the month on a high, feeling nurtured and uplifted in the presence of family members and pleased with your work performance.

Writing Student Learning Outcomes

Guidelines for writing slos.

Student learning outcomes should be defined by using action terms that are:

  • Performed by the learner

Outcomes that are unmeasurable or do not refer to actions performed by the learner cannot be easily assessed. We cannot measure what occurs in a student’s mind (e.g, the student understands concept X”), but we can measure actions taken by a student (e.g., the student defines, explains, and provides examples of concept X).

When writing student learning outcomes:

  • Become aware of
  • Become familiar with
  • Avoid describing actions taken by somebody other than the learner (e.g., “the program will help students to appreciate concept X” or “the course will provide students with the opportunity to learn about concept X”).

Bloom’s revised taxonomy 1 of educational objectives can help you choose verbs that are appropriate to the level of achievement and performance you desire. Download  Action Words by Bloom's Taxonomy Level , a useful table to help you write good student learning outcomes.

Charlie Kirk’s UW visit ends on tense note between fans and protesters

A tense standoff took place at the University of Washington Tuesday night between pro-Palestinian encampment protesters and fans of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk after the conservative activist held an event on campus as part of his “Live Free Tour.”

Leading up to the event, people on both sides of the political spectrum feared the possibility of violence.

The UW Muslim Student Association called for support before the event, saying they expected Kirk’s event to draw a “large number of right-wing agitators,” pointing to an hourslong attack last week on an encampment at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Barricades were set up in advance of the event and police officers were present throughout the day.

Protesters camped at UW have been calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war and for the university to “materially divest from Israel” and end its century-old relationship with Boeing , among other actions.

Little confrontation happened for much of the day, and violence appeared contained to a few brief scuffles.

“Our priority was to ensure the safety of all students, faculty, staff and visitors to our campus during what we anticipated could be a tense evening, and we took steps to maintain distance between opposing groups,” UW spokesperson Victor Balta said in an email Tuesday evening. “We have received some reports of altercations and are continuing to monitor and work toward a peaceful conclusion to the night.”

Earlier in the afternoon, Kirk held his typical “Debate Me” format near the Husky Union Building Tuesday afternoon, as a crowd of about 200 students and community members gathered to watch. A group of protesters nearby attempted to disrupt the event, shouting chants.

Supporters of the Popular University for Gaza liberated zone formed in the Liberal Arts Quadrangle, where well over 100 tents are set up, encouraged its members not to engage with Kirk. On the lawn, students chanted, but the encampment remained calm. One academic building was spray-painted with the words “How many dead in Gaza.”

In the evening, hundreds of people lined up outside the Husky Union Building to attend Kirk’s event, while a group of protesters gathered at the University of Washington light rail station, leading Sound Transit to temporarily shut it down.

While the event was underway, the group at the light rail station marched to the encampment. People dressed in all black wielding shields of cutup trash cans formed a barricade around the Quad to protect the encampment against possible counterprotesters.

Religious speakers made an appearance, as well, with their own signs and megaphones, adding to the noise.

Before 9 p.m., as Kirk’s event let out, attendees made their way to the wall of protesters, where a standoff ensued. Chants of “Free Palestine!” competed with chants of “USA!” Small confrontations took place. Green lasers were shined into the trees and people threw eggs.

Around 9:30, counterprotesters dispersed while protesters lingered, the sound of their chants filling the space: “We will not stop, we will not rest.”

Three-star 2025 defensive lineman sets up official visit with blue devils, share this article.

Three-star 2025 defensive lineman Adam Shovlin will take an official visit with the Blue Devils this summer.

According to a Wednesday report from 247Sports’ Brian Dohn , Sholvin will visit Durham on June 7.

Sholvin, who plays for the St. Thomas More School in Connecticut, is the 46th-ranked defensive lineman in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the Class of 2025.

Shovlin already took an unofficial visit with Duke back in November 2022.

The recruiting race for the lineman seems to be down to the Blue Devils, Stanford, and Penn State . Shovlin will visit all three programs over the next seven weeks. Dohn submitted a Crystal Ball prediction for the Cardinal to land Shovlin in early April, and Stanford is first on the Connecticut native’s list with a visit scheduled for the end of this month.

If you are looking for a 'sweet pick' visit this vintage market in Petaluma

Localish logo

PETALUMA, Calif. -- On the third Sunday of the every month, the Petaluma Veterans Memorial Hall hosts the Sweet Pick'n Vintage Market, a collector's dreamland.

"We have a passion for antiques and for vintage collectibles," Sweet Pick'n founder Scott Rose shares, "we really wanted to create a space where other collectors could come and find really sweet picks."

In theory, every attendee comes to an event looking for that "sweet pick."

"That basically means that you found something that you were really happy about, something that you've never seen before or that you've been dying to find your whole life and it's here," Rose explains.

The market boasts more than 60 vendors offering a wide array of different items.

"Ephemera, rock posters and rock t-shirts," Rose recounts, "the vintage toys and vintage records are all really hot right now."

"We are selling nostalgia. We're bringing the past to the present and that's what people are looking for," Clutts Co. co-founder owner David Mason reveals.

"There's something about objects from our childhood, a time that we may think back on fondly and when we connect to an object that reminds us of a better time in our lives, it can really be impactful," Rose says.

The market has both indoor and outdoor shopping areas.

"The inside market is kind of geared towards records and toys, comics, trading cards and baseball card," Mason reveals, "almost like a vintage comic con."

The outside market offers more classic antiques like jewelry, vintage concert shirts, restored 100-year-old skillets, and even an antiquities dealer.

"They walk by and they say: 'Oh. This looks like a museum,'" North American Artifacts dealer Mark Mackie confesses, "I like to collect history, world antiquities."

Items at his space date back anywhere from thousands of years to the present.

With food onsite, free parking and a $2 admission, the event is something people of all ages can enjoy.

"It's a beautiful way to spend a Sunday afternoon," dealer Bradley Gray declares.

"If everyone could leave with one thing that really tugged at their heart strings, that would make me super happy," Rose shares.

Which Is Correct? It Is I Vs. It Is Me

Hello, it is I. Those are the lyrics, right? … Or should they be?

Both  I and me  are pronouns . But there’s a clear difference between the two: I is what is known as a subject pronoun, and me is an object pronoun. What does that mean in the case of it is me and it is I ?

When to say “It is I”

The phrase it is I is correct for formal writing. Traditionally, the use of I is appropriate when it follows a linking verb like is , was , or were . Linking verbs express a state of being rather than describing an action. They’re usually paired with subject pronouns. Subject pronouns include I , he , she , they , and we . They reference the person performing the action in the sentence.

In writing, it is I sometimes shows ranks or formal relationships. For example in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility , John Willoughby says to Mrs. Dashwood, “ It is I who may rather expect to be ill—for I am now suffering under a very heavy disappointment!” Sense and Sensibility was published in 1811, a time period where a proper young man was expected to speak formally to an older woman.

Examples of It is I in a sentence

Because it is I is so formal, it’s not often encountered in everyday conversation, articles, or books. It can be found in older texts, such as the Bible: It is I, do not be afraid (John 6:20). It can also be used like this:

  • It is I  she wishes to see tonight.
  • Perhaps it is I who should recuse myself from the vote.
  • I think it is I who should ask your forgiveness.
  • Is this Joe? – It is I .

When to say “It is me”

It is me  (or it’s me ) is considered an informal style. Today, most native English speakers use It is me instead of It is I .

Me is usually an object pronoun . In most cases this means it’s on the receiving end of the action in a sentence. For example, in  My sister gave me the book , the speaker is the recipient of the giving . The use of me in the phrase it is me isn’t typical usage of the pronoun, since there is no action to receive.

It’s me is used more often in casual speech. Judy Blume’s book, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret , uses the informal phrase in the title and throughout the work. In this young adult novel, Margaret deals with the questions and challenges in her life by talking to God. Since Margaret is an 11-year-old girl, she speaks casually: “Are you there God? It’s me , Margaret. We’re moving today.” She’s talking to someone she trusts and confides in, so there’s no need for formality.

Examples of It is me in a sentence

  • With this new haircut, no one knows it is me .
  • You can say anything. It is me you’re talking to.
  • It is me in the picture.
  • Is this Lou? – Yes, it’s me .

In general, both it is I and it’s me are valid ways of introducing yourself. It’s just that it is I is more formal, and can sound old fashioned to the modern ear. It’s me is more casual and relaxed, and you’re more likely to hear it in present-day conversations.

Defensive lineman Gus "Bus" Cordova , a USC Trojans commit among the high school class of 2025, has announced the dates of his official visit to Southern California via his personal Twitter account.

The defensive end will visit USC from June 21-23. The Trojan made an offer to the Texas native in Jan. 2024. Two months later, he accepted the offer and verbally committed to Southern California over schools like Arizona, Baylor, Auburn, Michigan, Florida State, and Clemson, to name a few.

Cordova is 6-foot-3 and weighs 246 pounds. Defensive line coach Shaun Nua pursued Cordova and will ensure that he lands with the Trojans when the dust has settled.

According to 247Sports, the defensive lineman is seen as a three-star recruit. While he is committed to USC, other top programs, such as Ohio State, Cincinnati, Kasan State, and Wake Forest, have extended offers to the junior.

In his junior year, he recorded 65 tackles, five tackles for loss, and two sacks while leading Lake Travis to an 11-3 record and a Texas 6A D-I regional final. Cordova will make his way to the West Coast next month.

Why Prince Harry will not visit King Charles III in London this week

visit synonym of

Prince Harry and King Charles III will not be having a family reunion while the Duke of Sussex is in London this week.

Harry is in London to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Invictus Games, which he brought to London in 2014. To mark the milestone, he'll be attended a panel discussion with the organization on Tuesday and on Wednesday, he will attend a celebration at St Paul’s Cathedral along with veterans involved in the various Invictus Games sports.

"In response to the many inquiries and continued speculation on whether or not The Duke will meet with his father while in the UK this week, it unfortunately will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full programme," a spokesperson for Harry told USA TODAY in a statement Tuesday. "The Duke of course is understanding of his father's diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon.

USA TODAY has reached out to reps for Buckingham Palace.

Charles, who returned to his public duties on April 30 after taking a step back from treatment  for an undisclosed form of cancer , is also booked on Wednesday.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Buckhingham Palace is hosting the first Sovereign's Garden Party of the season, with Charles expected to attend.

Charles' visit to a cancer treatment center was "the first in a number of external engagements" coming up, although his schedule won't immediately return to what it was before his diagnosis, according to the palace.

Outings "will remain subject to doctors' advice," but "it will not be a fullsummer program," they added.

Prince Harry visited King Charles III in February following his father's cancer diagnosis

Although Charles and Harry are not crossing paths this week, they did have a private reunion in February after the palace confirmed the king was diagnosed with "a form of cancer." Before the announcement he was hospitalized and underwent a procedure for  benign prostate enlargement  in January, and the cancer was identified via diagnostic tests after a "separate issue of concern was noted."

"I spoke to him. And I jumped on a plane and went to go see him as soon as I could," the Duke of Sussex said on " Good Morning America " in a segment that aired on Feb. 16 of the moment he learned about his father's health.

He continued, "I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane, go and see him, and spend any time with him – I'm grateful for that. … I've got other trips planned that will take me through the U.K., or back to the U.K., and so I'll stop in and see my family as much as I can."

When asked about the state of his father's health, Harry said, "That stays between me and him."

Prince Harry's tense relationship with King Charles, Prince William

Harry discussed his relationship with the royal family in his memoir "Spare," published in January 2023, accusing them of providing unflattering information about other members to the press in exchange for positive coverage. He  also recalled his  father and brother,  Prince William , saying didn't know why he left.

"If they didn't know why I'd left, maybe they just didn't know me," he wrote. "At all. And maybe they never really did. … How can I tell them? I can't. It would take too long. Besides, they're clearly not in the right frame of mind to listen. Not now, anyway. Not today."

In an interview with  ITV in 2023 , Harry said he hoped to reconcile with Charles and William after their rift but alleged that "they've shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile."

But Harry also  told "60 Minutes ," "I look forward to having a relationship with my brother. I look forward to having a relationship with my father and other members of my family."
