Like a blush-colored beacon rises this iconic structure that is often the focal point of the entire city. The Parish of San Miguel Arcangel, perched atop the city, is one of the most beautiful examples of architecture not only in the city, but throughout Mexico.

The base of the church dates from the late 17th century, but the tapered pinnacles were designed by local stonemason, Zeferino Gutierrez in the late 1800s. Allegedly, he based the design on a Belgian church.

One of the most important images within the church is that of Cristo de la Conquista, which sits near the main altar. It was made in Patzcuaro sometime around the 16th century. You may even be able to peek into the church's crypt, where several Mexican war heroes are buried. The best part of the church? Entrance is free.

Near the Parroquia is the Iglesia de San Rafael, which was founded in the late 18th century.

Open to the public less than 10 years ago, San Miguel de Allende's Cañada de la Virgen is one of the best-kept archaeological secrets of Mexico. The original residents of this pre-Hispanic city are still unknown, but it was believed that it was occupied between approximately AD 540 and 1050 .

Today, analysts are in awe of the site, which is precise mathematically, architecturally, and astronomically.

The most important structures are the House of the Thirteen Heaves, the House of the Longest Night, and the House of the Wind. These were residences, ceremonial spaces, and tombs. It is believed that the site was also a destination for pilgrims, who made the long journey to learn from its resident astronomer priests.

What was once a textile mill from 1902 to 1991 has now become the embodiment of everything San Miguel has to offer for art lovers. Fabrica La Aurora , just a short walk from the Parish, has left traces of its past to set the scene - think oil-stained floors - but is very much all about the present day art scene in San Miguel de Allende.

If you want to get a feel for the soul of San Miguel de Allende, you'll need to start at its pulsing core. The central square, over which the Parish looks, is known as El Jardin, and it is the beating heart of the city.

Ringed in historical buildings, with a lush garden in the center, El Jardin is the social center , a place for live music, dancing, congregating - at all hours of the day or night. Street vendors pop up all over the square selling local seats, while groups of mariachis parade back and forth.

You won't want to miss the historic buildings that fringe its borders, either, from the iconic Parish, to the family home of Ignacio Allende, who was one of the premiere faces of the Mexican war of Independence. His home is now the Historical Museum of San Miguel de Allende.

San Miguel de Allende is heralded for its works of created beauty, like its architecture and physical art. But just outside the city is a prime example of natural beauty, as well. El Charco de Ingenio is a 170-acre botanical garden that lives within a nature preserve.

The garden was born in 1990 as a way to protect the unique natural environment, which has both scenic and historic value. Over the years, it has earned a certain number of accolades, as well. For example, the Dalai Lama designated it a Peace Zone in 2004.

Much more than just a place to visit to see wildlife, it is also a place for locals and tourists to hike, picnic, meditate, or simply reflect. When we said San Miguel de Allende was a haven for artists, we were not exaggerating. It seems everywhere you turn, something artistic is going on. One of the beacons for artists traveling to Mexico is the Instituto Allende , which has been luring art students for more than five decades.

The institute lives in the historic home of the Condes de la Canal family and dates back to the early 18th century. An art institute was opened in the 1950s. Today, it serves as an educational center for aspiring artists . Many come from abroad to earn their degree in visual arts. There are abbreviated courses, as well, including ones in watercolors, acrylics, sculpture, Mexican textiles, and more.

The campus is open to visitors on weekdays and Saturday mornings. It is free to visit the school. Visitors can choose from three- and four-week courses available, as well as one-day workshops.

The library may not seem like a bucket list item on your Mexico vacation, but perhaps you'll make an exception for the Biblioteca Publica de San Miguel de Allende.

Steeped in historic significance, the library started in the 1950s, when a Canadian expat welcomed local children to read the magazines in her home. More and more visitors started coming, until finally, a few years later, the library had to move to a larger building just north of El Jardin, where it currently lives today.

Its shelves are stocked with bilingual books and other media, and the library often hosts free classes for kids on a variety of subjects. Not only that, the library is home to the Santa Ana Theater , which hosts international films and various concerts.

One of the most breathtaking pieces of religious art can be found just 15 minutes from San Miguel de Allende. Seriously - move over Sistine Chapel. In the nearby town of Atotonilco stands a magnificent church, today known as the Sanctuary of Atotonilco.

The sanctuary was built by theologist Luis Felipe Neri Alfaro, who came to San Miguel de Allende in the mid 18th century to continue his religious studies. The sanctuary stands today in the Mexican Baroque style, with the exterior designed to look like a Spanish fortress. But the true beauty is within.

Stepping through the heavy wooden doors, visitors are taken aback by the folk art that plasters nearly every inch. The murals in the narthex are of the Last Judgment. Farther on, visitors enter a smaller section that is truly splashed over everything. It's difficult to find one section of the sanctuary that is not bathed in murals. Alfaro remained the priest of the sanctuary for 36 years. Today, he is buried in a tomb in the wall beside the main altar.

Did you know that Mexico's central highlands are peppered with hot springs? It's true. Down the central spine of Mexico are many volcanoes, some of which are still active today. As a result, the area is packed with natural thermal baths.

Just seven miles from San Miguel de Allende (near the sanctuary, actually) is Escondido Place, an aquatic playground with indoor and outdoor thermal pools, fed by the natural springs. In addition to the springs is a Renaissance Spa, which offers a menu of massages, exfoliation, facials, and more.

The Museo Histórico de San Miguel de Allende is one of the most important buildings in the city. Just south of El Jardin, the building was once the birthplace of Ignacio Jose de Allende y Unzaga, a Spanish army officer who fought for the side of Mexican independence.

In 1990, the historic (and beloved) home was turned into a museum and remains so today. The two floors are dedicated to the life of Allende, as well as paintings from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. It also covers the archaeological heritage of Mexico, including the Mesoamerican and regional cultures, as well as the founding of the town in the 16th century.

Whimsical history takes center stage at La Esquina, the museum of popular Mexican toys. More than 1,000 objects are on display in four permanent galleries, which spotlight creativity and cultural diversity.

The artsy property has avant guard public spaces and zen elegant rooms with comfy beds. The restaurant here serves artisanal fare, and there is a swimming pool and sauna on-site. The hotel is also pet friendly if you are traveling with a dog.
• For a boutique luxury stay check out Casa Misha , which is located just two blocks from San Miguel's main plaza. There are just seven elegant rooms, and each features a different style. Breakfast is included in your rate and can be served in your room. There is also a rooftop terrace to relax upon.

Mid-Range Hotels :

• Hotel Casa Naré is a good mid-range choice. The location in the historic old town is very central but on a quiet street. Rooms and suites have a modern hacienda vibe, and the beds are comfy. Amenities include free breakfast, a rooftop terrace, and parking.
• With relaxing modern rooms and suites, including options for families, Casa Rosada Hotel is another excellent good-value hotel. Just a few minutes' walk from El Jardin and Zocalo, the location is also great. A free breakfast is served to guests, and there is a rooftop terrace.
• If you're looking for a slightly lower price point but still comfortable property, check out Villa Mirasol Hotel . The 3-star hotel has cozy rooms and suites with exposed brick ceilings and colorful artwork. There is a restaurant on-site, breakfast is complimentary, and guests can also arrange for massages and hot spring baths.

Budget Hotels :

• Hotel la Estacion is one of the best budget picks in San Miguel de Allende. Rooms are tidy and comfy, with doors opening onto private balconies. The family friendly property offers a number of amenities including a restaurant, free secure parking, and a 24-hour front desk.

Meet San Miguel de Allende, the jewel box of a city located in Mexico’s state of Guanajuato. Praised for many things like its beauty and culture, it’s no wonder that it tops the lists for best destinations. While I planned my first trip here over a year ago, I finally made my arrival just this month.

What drew me in originally were the enchanting colored, Colonial streets dripping in bougainvillea. If you’ve seen any postcards of the rosy-pink spires of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, you’ll know what I mean. But what really set fire to finally booking the tickets was something entirely different: The creative energy of San Miguel.

Found in artisanal shops, art galleries, farm-to-table restaurants, and boutique hotels providing an opportunity to slow down, it permeates everything. It doesn’t hurt that every corner turned in the city reveals yet another moment of beauty, but within it all, there is culture, cuisine, and community to be found.

Days spent soaking in the sun, sore legs from ascending the cobblestone lanes, hunting out incredible eats and shops, and moments of rest poolside or on a rooftop terrace. This was life in San Miguel for a week. Did it live up to my expectations? Yes and more.

It is generally a safe city due to the number of tourists and ex-pats living in the city. The crime rate here is low when compared to other destinations across Mexico. With that said, practice common sense when traveling. Keep valuables close, be mindful of people passing you, don’t wander solo at night, and pay attention to your surroundings.

When is the Best Time to Visit San Miguel de Allende?

For those seeking the best weather, November through April have the coolest months in the 70s and 80s. Come summer, the months can be quite hot and it is very rainy June-October. As you plan, keep in mind it will be very busy during the holidays like Christmas and Easter.

How Much Time Should I Spend in San Miguel de Allende?

I would recommend a minimum of 4 nights. This will give you ample time to explore the city center itself and even take a nearby day trip or two.

How Do I get to San Miguel de Allende?

Nearest airports.

The closest two airports to San Miguel de Allende are BJX in León Del Bajio (48 miles away, 1.5 hr drive) and QRO in Santiago de Querétaro (41 miles away, 1.25 hr drive). Both service direct flights in the U.S. with airlines like Volaris, Aeromexico, and United Airlines.

Upon arrival at either of these airports, pre-book a transfer with Bajiogo . Bajiogo is a very reliable company, we booked our transfers both ways and found the service timely and professional.

Travel Tip: If arriving late at night, I would consider booking a nearby airport hotel to transfer in the morning instead of driving at night.

From Mexico City

If you are already in CDMX, you can hire a driver to take you. The drive from CDMX to San Miguel is around 3.5 hours.

How Do I Get Around San Miguel de Allende?

By foot is the easiest way to get around San Miguel de Allende. The whole city itself is walkable and you don’t need a car to explore. That said, Uber or taxis are readily available to get you around the city if in a hurry. Uber is very reliable, taxis will require cash.

Travel Tip: Be prepared to wear comfortable shoes to explore San Miguel on foot. The city is paved with cobblestones and has a lot of hills, which will definitely make you break a sweat at peak heat.

Where To Stay In San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Casa de sierra nevada, a belmond hotel.

Checking in with Kiwi Collection for two nights at Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel was nothing short of a dream. A perk of booking through Kiwi Collection is room upgrades on arrival (upon availability), so as we were whisked away to our suite, I knew we were in for a treat. The luxurious hotel is set with 37 rooms and suites across six separate 17th- and 18th-century Spanish Colonial buildings. As you step into the charming and intimate casas, the noise of the city fades away.

Inside our suite, a terrace with a plunge pool, a grand living room with a fireplace, and a Talavera-tiled bathroom. Each element in the room is a representation of Mexico, not a single corner untouched, true to the Belmond Hotel’s passion for memorable stays. In the morning, a quick call delivers a piping hot pot of coffee paired with local pastries like fluffy conchas. The postcards from the stay are in these thoughtful details.

Across the fairytale property, two restaurants shine in their own way — Andanza and Restaurante del Parque, I’d recommend at least a meal at both. During the stay, in the heart of Casa Palma is the quiet pool surrounded by stone arches and bougainvillea. It’s a setting unlike any other in the city. Come night, don’t miss a chance of watching the sunset with a cocktail in hand at Tunki — the newest rooftop bar to open in town.

Where To Eat and Drink in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Restaurante del parque.

Located in Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel , Restaurante del Parque is an Oaxacan-focused dining experience. Ingredients sourced from the vibrant area of Oaxaca are infused with incredible flavors with a modern presentation. The food is equally as incredible as the setting, making it one of the best meals in San Miguel de Allende.

We had the pleasure of dining here for both breakfast and lunch, with these being our best meals while in the city. Executive Chef Eduardo Zorilla passion for refined cuisine is both playful and memorable. For lunch, two of the standout plates were the mole tasting and the softshell crab tacos. I highly recommend making a booking in advance.

If you’re looking for an elevated meal for either breakfast, lunch, or dinner, book in at Andanza . Set inside the vine-covered walls of Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel , the food is international featuring local flavors. It’s a local favorite for weekend breakfast. We really enjoyed getting to eat here several times throughout our trip — don’t skip the burger!

A small restaurant tucked off the street, Tostévere was a hit for its creative tostadas. Everything on the menu was delicious, I recommend booking in advance for weekends and nights.

An easy meal in the center of San Miguel, we strolled in for a late lunch. They have a rooftop and bottom floor, with an affordable menu. Their most popular dish is the traditional Chiles en Nogada, which I tried and found a bit sweet but nonetheless interesting to try.

La Mezcalería SMA

This spot is just an absolute gem, you can smell the incredible food as you walk by. Though it is known for being a mezcal bar, they also have a great menu of small bites like tuna tartar and spicy housemade sausage.

For a laidback spot for either breakfast or lunch, or even a cup of coffee with a pastry, head to Jacques . Tucked off a small street, this stunner of a restaurant was one of my favorites while visiting.

Inside Cafe

Over the week in San Miguel, we had several meals delivered from Inside Cafe to our Airbnb (Uber Eats y’all!). We fell in love with their hot press sandwiches with pulled pork and cheese. And I always ordered a “limonada de maracuyá” which is like a sparkly passion fruit lemonade drink — absolutely epic.

Essential Things to Do In San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Stroll the city.

Being such a walkable city, San Miguel de Allende is best experienced by going for a stroll. I would head out in the morning to watch the city come alive. You’ll see shops setting up, grab a coffee to go, and sit in one of the many squares like Plaza Cívica . Come night, the city comes alive — you’ll find live bands and mojigangas (the large puppets) gathered in front of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel .

Visit Fábrica La Aurora

One of the best destinations within the city is that of Fábrica La Aurora . Head there in the morning, and start your time at Geek & Coffee . This cafe serves breakfast/coffee and is one of the most kid-friendly spots in the area with a small garden and play structures.

Afterward, stroll into Fábrica La Aurora, the renovated textile mill that now houses artist studios, shops, and galleries. There is so much to see in here, you could spend a whole afternoon winding in and out of the factory.

Shop the Local Design Stores

Throughout San Miguel, you’ll find so many wonderful shops to dive into. Just by going on a walk through the neighborhoods, you’ll find gems tucked away. I had a few favorite shops during our trip. Mixta for vintage clothing, Laura Kirar Shop inside Meson Hidalgo for colorful prints/home decor, La Calaca for antiques/folk art, Arte Zapoteco for all textiles (bought a lot here), Dôce 18 Concept House for high-end fashion/home, Mercado Collective for the best-curated store, and Roma Quince for incredible textiles and pottery.

Soak in Sunset Views from El Mirador

A classic view of San Miguel is from El Mirador . Come sunset, the viewpoint comes alive with visitors watching the city get draped in bright colors. You can take a taxi up and consider strolling back down into town afterward.

Visit La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel and Jardín Allende

The rosy-pink 17th-century church has spires that reach into the sky — La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is in the backdrop of almost every photo of the city. While you can take in the beauty from the outside, you can also visit inside when there is no mass happening.

Afterward, stroll across the way to Jardín Allende for the bustling town plaza. You’ll find street vendors selling refreshing drinks and snacks — the perfect spot to people-watch.

Spend Time in Parque Benito Juárez

If you’re looking for the largest gardens and park to stroll, Parque Benito Juárez is it. There are basketball courts, lined pathways, and even kid parks. It’s incredibly peaceful and loved going here in the morning with our little one.

Shop the Ignacio Ramírez Market

A classic experience not to be missed is visiting the stalls of Ignacio Ramírez Market . There are two parts of the market — the food/grocer and the artisanal section. Don’t miss either, and especially bring cash for the Mercado de Artesanías .

Many people think of Mexico as a place to go for its world-renowned beach destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Vallarta. We’ve been to all three and can attest to their appeal.

On our last trip to this lively country, we wanted to experience more than only surf and sand. So after visiting the Riviera Maya, we scheduled several weeks in a location that had been on our radar for years — San Miguel de Allende.

Why San Miguel? Friends from our hometown of Cuenca, Ecuador, who visited this small highland city raved about it. Some were so captivated they relocated there.

When planning a trip to San Miguel de Allende, here are our recommendations for the best things to see and do.

1. La Parroquia De San Miguel Arcángel

Most recognized landmark.

San Miguel’s most recognized landmark, La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, sits in the center of downtown with soaring pink neo-Gothic spires visible from almost anywhere.

Its eclectic and outrageously ornate Baroque style is altogether different from traditional Spanish churches of the period. The design, by an indigenous stonemason with no architectural training, was reputedly taken from a postcard of a Belgian church.

2. Mercado Ignacio Ramírez

San miguel’s oldest market.

Mercado Ignacio Ramírez, San Miguel’s oldest market, is named after a beloved Mexican poet. Even if you’re not cooking much (or at all) during your visit, it’s fun to stop by for a taste of daily life.

The mercado is a constant buzz of activity, with vendors offering everything from fresh vegetables and exotic Mexican fruits to cheeses and spices to clothing and local handicrafts.

3. El Jardin

Directly in front of La Parroquia is El Jardin, a lovely park filled with rose bushes and geometrically manicured laurel trees. It is the perfect spot to find some shade on one of the wrought iron benches and take in the constant activity swirling around San Miguel’s busy center. Instagram wannabees taking selfies in front of the cathedral, mariachi bands performing for tips, and street vendors selling everything from ice cream to balloons — people-watching doesn’t get any better.

4. Fabrica La Aurora

Cafes, shops, and art galleries.

A huge former textile mill has been reimagined into the embodiment of San Miguel’s art scene. Fabrica La Aurora is a delightful collection of shops, studios, art galleries, and cafes assembled under one roof. You can spend hours here shopping and chatting with resident artisans. Enjoy an al fresco lunch at Food Factory or Cafe de la Aurora.

Pro Tip: There is an evening art walk on the first Saturday of the month. Drop by each Thursday for Open Studio Day.

5. Explore The Cobblestone Streets

Carefree strolls along cobblestone streets and alleys may very well be your favorite thing to do in San Miguel. Between the pastel-colored residences, handcrafted doors and gates, and walls covered with ivy or blooming bougainvillea wherever you look, you feel like you’ve somehow stumbled onto a movie set. Thank goodness taking photos doesn’t require film anymore, because otherwise this trip would cost a fortune!

Pro Tip: Pace yourself, because the city is extremely hilly. And watch your step walking on the cobblestone and narrow, uneven sidewalks. You don’t want a tumble or sprained ankle to ruin your visit!

6. El Mirador

For the best panoramic view of San Miguel, you’ve got to go up, up, up to the outlook at El Mirador. While billed as “only” a 15–20 minute walk from downtown, be advised the incline is quite steep.

Pro Tip: We recommend you skip the huffing and puffing and take an inexpensive taxi or Uber instead. You’ll thank us later.

7. Hot Air Balloon Ride

If you are looking for an unforgettable experience, climb into the gondola of a hot air balloon and soar above the city at dawn.

Globo San Miguel has been offering this adventure for over 25 years. Book their Classic Sunrise flight for the memory of a lifetime.

8. Parque Benito Juárez

When you need a break from all the walking you’re doing in San Miguel, a great place to get off your feet for a while is Parque Benito Juarez. Buy an ice cream or cold drink from a vendor, find a bench in the shade, and relax. Afterward, as you meander along the park’s narrow pathways, you’ll discover hidden gardens filled with blooming flowers.

Pro Tip: While you’re in this area of town, have lunch at nearby Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada’s Restaurante del Parque . Then climb a winding hill to check out the Lavaderos del Chorro, a small square featuring a chapel and basins used for public laundry during the Spanish colonial era.

9. Rooftop Bars

You can’t go wrong choosing one of San Miguel de Allende’s many rooftop bars for a sunset cocktail. Hey, why not opt for a different one every night?

Sitting atop the Villa Limón Boutique Hotel, this elegant restaurant/bar serves handcrafted cocktails and a tasting menu of international flavors with a Latin touch.

Be sure to stop by Quince . With perfect views of the cathedral, it was recently named Top Rooftop Bar in the World by The Rooftop Guide .

Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar

A popular choice for locals and visitors alike is Rosewood Hotel’s Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar . Order a drink from the inventive menu and upscale “bar food” like lobster tacos. Then enjoy the view as the darkening sky turns beautiful shades of yellow, orange, pink, and purple. Does life get any better?

10. El Charro Del Ingenio

Botanical garden.

San Miguel’s botanical garden, El Charco del Ingenio , is a welcome diversion from all the sightseeing activities. Take your time wandering the many trails of this sprawling 165-acre nature preserve. The garden contains a diverse collection of cacti species gathered throughout Mexico.

11. Teatro Ángela Peralta

Historic theater.

Opened in 1873 and named for Mexico’s opera queen, Teatro Ángela Peralta is an intimate venue ideal for performances ranging from opera to flamenco dance. Plan your visit in November during the International Jazz Festival.

Our Favorite Restaurants

Are you a foodie? Then welcome to your happy place! From yummy street food to sophisticated fine dining, San Miguel’s culinary scene has you covered. Here are a few of our favorite spots.

Casa Nostra comes highly recommended. We celebrated our 50 th anniversary here with a wonderful dinner on the rooftop terrace — seared yellowtail tuna with pistachio and citric foam, and salmon filet served in a mango cilantro sauce with a hit of chili. Wow!

Cumpanio bistros serve contemporary versions of classic Italian and French dishes. Be sure to stop by their sister bakery Panio next door for irresistible breads and pastries.

La Unica is an international chain with a location in San Miguel that offers exceptional rooftop dining.

Want a more immersive dining experience? Taste of San Miguel offers a variety of food tours from a 3-hour, 7-location eat-a-thon to one called “Tacos and Tequila.”

History Of San Miguel De Allende

In 1937, artist Sterling Dickson was passing through town on a journey to nowhere in particular. He saw the beauty beneath the crumbling facades and never left.

Deciding to create an art school called Bellas Artes, he recruited young World War II veterans under the G.I. Bill of Rights to study there. San Miguel almost miraculously revived, and over time has turned into an international art center.

Because of its year-round springlike climate, SMA welcomes a steady stream of visitors. Like Dickson, many decide to stay. Expats make up a full 10 percent of the population.

It’s not hard to understand why. The elements of soft pastel buildings, cobblestone streets, vibrant art scene, spectacular restaurants, and surprisingly low costs are almost unbeatable.

We spent three busy weeks there and barely scratched the surface of all the possible activities and attractions. Oh well, that gives us an excuse to return. As if we needed one…

15 Fun and Unique Things to do in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

1. admire the pink beauty of the parroquia de san miguel arcángel.

A visit to the Parroquia de San Miguel de Allende should be top of the list when you’re planning what to do in San Miguel de Allende. This beautiful work of architecture is San Miguel de Allende’s primary place of catholic worship, and the colorful spires are somewhat of a landmark on the city’s skyline.

The pink facade, with its elaborate Neo-Gothic design, is curiously out of place among the colonial townhouses of Centro. Although the church dates back to at least the 17th century, local architect Zeferino Gutiérrez built the exterior at a much later date in the late 19th century. Gutiérrez had never left Mexico, but he was inspired by a postcard that depicted a Gothic Belgian church. 

Gutiérrez copied the design, adding his own Mexican touches, but largely creating the illusion of a grand European cathedral in San Miguel de Allende. Step inside the church and you’ll find typically Catholic artwork and icons of Jesus, Mary, and the many saints that are revered in Mexico. This is very much a church that still practices its faith, so try to be respectful of the many locals who come here to pray and light candles.

2. Delve into Revolutionary History at Casa de Ignacio Allende

Next to San Miguel de Allende’s main plaza, you can visit the former home of the city’s namesake, Ignacio Allende. A native of San Miguel (as it was called when he was born here in 1769), the Allendes were one of the wealthiest and most influential families in Guanajuato state. Being of mixed European and indigenous descent, though, the family resented the detrimental treatment of Mexicans by the Spanish rulers.

A revolution was stirring in Mexico, and in 1810, Ignacio Allende took up arms against the Spanish. Having spent many years as a captain in the Spanish army, he was well placed to take a leadership role in the rebellious army, and he soon became known across the nation for leading the revolution’s early victories in the Central Highlands. 

But after initial successes, Allende and other important leaders were betrayed. Allende was captured by the Spanish, and in 1811 he was executed in Chihuahua. He never saw Mexico win its independence, but he played an influential role starting a war that would drag on until 1821. 

The Casa de Allende has now been transformed into a museum, and it’s a veritable shrine to the Allende family. You can delve into Allende’s life and the exploits that made him a Mexican hero while also learning about the origins of the conflict he was involved in. 

The house itself dates back to 1760, and inside, you’ll find a treasure trove of historical curiosities that explore what life was like in the 18th and 19th centuries. If you’re interested in learning a little bit of history, visiting Casa de Ignacio Allende is one of the best things to do in San Miguel de Allende.

3. Enjoy a Panoramic Vista of San Miguel de Allende from El Mirador

There’s no denying that San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful place to visit. Cobblestone streets, colorful churches, and ramshackle colonial buildings give the city a unique charm, and the best way to enjoy its aesthetically pleasing skyline is from above. 

The best view of San Miguel de Allende can be seen from El Mirador. The name of this locally famous viewpoint isn’t exactly imaginative (El Mirador literally means the viewpoint in Spanish), but the panorama is guaranteed to leave you breathless. You’ll find El Mirador on the hillside above the city, and it’s a surprisingly short 15-minute walk from Centro (or a few minutes in a taxi if you’re feeling lazy). 

At the viewing area, you’ll find plenty of other tourists taking photos. You’ll also love how entrepreneurial locals have set up taco stands and beer stalls on the other side of the road. After a sweaty walk to El Mirador, there’s nothing better than a cold cerveza!  

4. See Hundreds of Mexican Masks at the Mask Museum

One of the most interesting San Miguel de Allende sightseeing options is the Mask Museum . This quirky museum is home to around 500 different masks, all of which have a connection to Mexican cultural traditions. 

If you’ve ever seen a Day of the Dead celebration, then you’ll know just how elaborate Mexican mask-making can be. Masks can be found throughout Mexican history, and they’re a long-standing tradition that can be traced back to a time long before the Spanish arrived here. Masks feature prominently in many indigenous religious ceremonies, and the sheer diversity of the masks found in different regions is absolutely stunning.

The Mask Museum is the passion project of one man, Bill LeVasseur, who set about collecting as many of these masks as he could for posterity. The collection is continually expanding, and we recommend booking a tour with Bill in order to find out more about the museum, the masks, and the man behind it all. If you’re looking for cultural San Miguel de Allende attractions, the Mask Museum is a must-visit. 

5. Discover San Miguel de Allende’s Creative Soul in Fábrica la Aurora

For decades, San Miguel de Allende has been the domain of creatives. Legions of writers and artists have lived and worked here, seeking inspiration among the colorful streets and in the strong artistic communities found here. 

One place in particular that embodies the creative soul of the city is Fábrica la Aurora , a cultural center and art gallery that’s laden with heritage and offers some of the coolest things to do in San Miguel de Allende. Fábrica la Aurora is hard to define. You’ll find burger restaurants, jewelry shops, and cafes interspersed among art galleries, workshops, and art displays. 

There’s plenty of space for everything here because, in a former life, Fábrica la Aurora was a huge textile factory. The building itself is a piece of important local history, and it dates back to 1902. 

When the factory closed in 1991, it was repurposed into the innovative art gallery/shopping mall you find here today. Much of the old machinery still remains, giving Fábrica la Aurora a unique, post-industrial feel. 

6. Release Your Artistic Side at the Instituto Allende

If you’d love to become more involved in San Miguel de Allende’s creative scene, then there’s no better place to visit than the Instituto Allende . Located within a magnificent former convent in the city center, this prestigious art school has been training the best of the best since it was founded in 1950. 

The Instituto Allende teaches degree courses in conjunction with the University of Guanajuato, and it’s been popular with art students for decades. The Ignacio Ramírez Market in San Miguel de Allende is a fantastic place for purchasing local goods. This farmers’ market has a wide variety of items, including produce, meats, cheeses, and bread. In addition, they also sell traditional Mexican clothing and jewelry. The market is open every day except for Sunday, and it is just a short walk away from the heart of the city.

17. Visit the Instituto Allende

Visiting a new place like San Miguel de Allende is not just about exploring and seeing the treasures it has to offer. Sometimes, we also get to enrich ourselves and learn something new, and that is what Instituto Allende is all about. It is a visual arts school that has attracted aspiring art students (especially in America and Canada) since its doors opened in 1950. For visitors, the school’s beautiful architecture, galleries, garden, and cafe are definitely something worth checking out.

If you feel that you might be staying in the city for quite a while, you might want to consider signing up for some of their classes (for a fee). These include Spanish language lessons, painting, drawing, ceramics, to name a few. They also offer short courses for adults during the fall and spring on their Lifelong Learning Program.

18. Explore the La Esquina Toy Museum

La Esquina Toy Museum is a quaint museum devoted to preserving vintage, handcrafted Mexican toys from various regions. They have a lovely collection, with over one thousand colorful toys on display spread across three floors. What’s fascinating is that some of them are made from simple materials like grass and reeds.

Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to touch any of the toys on display (which can be a bummer, especially if you have kids with you). However, they do have a gift shop where you can purchase colorful hand-made goodies, from rag dolls to wooden trucks and more.

19. Get Pampered at La Gruta Spa

What better way to relax and recharge after exploring San Miguel de Allende than a trip to the La Gruta Spa . Set in gorgeous lush gardens, La Gruta consists of four thermal spring pools with varying temperatures. They also have a man-made cave called the ‘Gruta,’ said to be the source of the hot spring and the hottest of the four pools.

After you’re done soaking yourself in the relaxing waters of the pools, you can grab a bite of Mexican dishes like quesadillas at their restaurant, surrounded by nature. You can also book a spa/therapeutic massage if you’re looking to relax even more. Another unique experience they offer are temazcal ceremonies, which involves pouring water over hot volcanic rocks to produce steam inside a dome-shaped sweat lodge. How’s that for a unique thing to do in San Miguel de Allende?!?

20. Drink at a Rooftop Bar 

If you’re looking for a great view with your cocktail, then you’ll want to check out one of San Miguel de Allende’s rooftop bars. Here are a few of my favorites:

Luna Rooftop Bar is located atop Hotel Rosewood and offers stunning cityscape views (especially during sunsets), delicious tapas, good music, and signature cocktails (try out their ‘Gin on Fire’ and ‘Mezcal Pepino’!)

Quince Rooftop Bar is another popular option, located at Cuna de Allende 15. It was also rated as the best rooftop resto/bar in the world twice (2018 & 2020). With its chic décor and impressive cocktail and sushi menu, Quince is the perfect place to while away an evening.

Trazo 1810 Rooftop Bar offers panoramic views of both the city and the surrounding countryside. It is located at the Hotel Boutique Casa 1810.

21. Tour the Mask Museum

The charming B&B Casa de la Cuesta complex, owned by husband and wife Bill and Heidi LeVasseur, is home to one of the most unique collections in San Miguel called the ‘Another Face of Mexico’ mask museum.

In a span of 25 years, Bill has amassed an extraordinary collection of over 500 Mexican ceremonial masks, all of which have been used in indigenous performances. He is also quite the expert when it comes to masks and masked dancing, which he eagerly shares with visitors wanting to learn more.

22. Shop for Bargains at Mercado de Artesanias

Looking for gifts or souvenirs for your travels does not mean you have to break the bank, especially in San Miguel de Allende. Enter the Mercado de Artesanias , an artisan’s market located on a narrow street spanning a few blocks northwest of La Parroquia (the city’s iconic landmark). There are a variety of stalls selling handmade products, from pottery and textiles to jewelry and woodwork. Prices are also negotiable, so it’s worth taking the time to browse and compare items before making a purchase. You can also munch on some grub while shopping in one of its many food stalls.

23. See Oratorio of San Felipe Neri

The Oratorio of San Felipe Neri is a 17th-century multi towered and domed church at the east end of Calle Insurgentes. It is known for its Baroque-style facade with indigenous influence fashioned in pale-pink sandstone. The eastern part of the church was once the site of an old chapel.

Inside the church are several paintings by Miguel Cabrera, which include a signed Virgin of Guadalupe. There are also 33 oil paintings depicting the life of 16th century Florentine San Felipe Neri, founder of the Oratorio Catholic order. Other must-see sights inside include a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Loreto, with a replica of the Santa Casa de Loreto in Italy, and a doorway holding the image of Our Lady of Solitude.

24. Take a Walk at Parque Benito Juarez

Another park that offers yet another tranquil place to relax and unwind from the city’s hustle and bustle is the Parque Benito Juarez . Considered the largest green space in San Miguel de Allende, this French-style park boasts fountains, and flower-lined paths, all within a sea of grass and trees native to the region. There’s tons of recreational facilities here, including basketball courts and a children’s playground.

Public events are often staged here, such as the La Calaca festival in November, the San Miguel de Allende Gastronomic Festival, and art events during the weekend.

25. Ogle Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel

The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel (or La Parroquia) is one of San Miguel de Allende’s most recognizable landmarks, towering at the heart of the city with its pinkish color and wedding cake-like features. It stands out even more during the night, with the church all lit up from the outside.

The church’s facade was designed by indigenous stonemason Zeferino Gutiérrez in the late 19th century. He drew inspiration from the postcards of Gothic churches in Europe and added his own interpretation to it.

The inside of the church is just as impressive, still retaining its 17th century layout and design. Some must-see sights here include the Señor de la Conquista, a life-sized statue of Jesus made from cornstalk paste, and a painting in the sacristy depicting the town’s founding in 1542 and its future move to the El Chorro neighborhood. There is also a small crypt under the altar, which houses the remains of former bishops and dignitaries, including one of Mexico’s former presidents. The crypt is open to the public yearly during the Day of the Dead (November 2).

26. Visit the Sanctuary of Atotonilco

The Sanctuary of Atotonilco is a church complex located in the small, rural community of Atotonilco, 11 km north of San Miguel. It is declared a World Heritage Site (along with San Miguel de Allende) and was built in the 18th century by Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro.

One of the main features of the complex are the murals covering the interior walls and ceiling, earning the church the name ‘Sistine Chapel of Mexico.’ These were mainly done by Antonio Martinez de Pocasangre (with some collaboration from José María Barajas), which spanned thirty years.

Visiting the main part of the church is free; however, if you want to see more exquisite paintings, you can head to the side chapel for a fee.

27. Visit Templo de San Francisco

One of the most iconic churches in San Miguel, the Templo de San Francisco is a culmination of different architectural styles which spanned 20 years to finish, starting from 1779.

One of its selling points is its facade, adorned with intricately carved stone figures and columns. Inside, you’ll find painted scenes and figures of saints. Outside the church is a well-maintained garden with benches and a small fountain, perfect for catching your breath from exploring or just people-watching.

28. Stop by Botica De Santa Teresita

The Botica De Santa Teresita is one of the few apothecaries still existing in Mexico, located in Relox 28 at downtown San Miguel de Allende. It is also the oldest one, standing for almost 160 years and still retaining the original charm of what apothecaries were like back in the day. Apothecaries usually refer to the person who makes the medicine and the place where the said medicine is sold. Their products all use natural ingredients, which range from skincare to soaps to remedies and so much more.

29. See the Old Gas Pump (at the corner of Juarez and Mesones)

The rusty old gas pump at the corner of Juarez and Mesones in San Miguel is a peculiar sight. It was installed in 1943 and was said to be the first gas pump in the city. You can even see the price of the gas back then in its window (8¢ per gallon!). Although it is no longer in use, this fascinating relic will continue to catch the eyes of visitors for years to come.

30. See the Street Art of Colonia Guadalupe

San Miguel de Allende’s art scene is as vibrant as its culture and origin, and Colonia Guadalupe is just one proof of this. What makes this quiet neighborhood stand out are the elaborate murals painted on the street walls within the area, which are all thanks to the local artists and community-driven art projects.

Many of these murals feature different themes, from Mexican to Huichol mythology to the city’s multicultural origins and so much more.

31. See the Laundry Basins at Lavaderos del Chorro

The Lavaderos is just one of the many attractions in Paseo del Chorro, the site of an ancient spring where the San Miguel de Allende was founded. During the 18th century, the Canal family ordered the creation of laundries (lavaderos), baths, and a chapel (which sits at the top of the spring). Locals used the lavaderos back in the day to wash their clothes.

Nowadays, it offers a quiet spot for visitors, where you can hear the sound of birds and see its appealing Spanish-colonial architecture. There’s also an old building just below the chapel called Casa de Cultura, which now serves as a teaching hub for art, dance, and music.

32. Find your Favorite Courtyard

There are many beautiful courtyards in San Miguel de Allende, especially in the hotels where it is secluded away, waiting to enchant the next traveler.

Some popular ones include the on a Mixta with its dozen of planters; the pretty fountain courtyard of Quince; and the one at Maha Boho Chic. Of course, plenty of other captivating courtyards are just waiting to be found in the city, so be sure to wander around to find your favorite one!

Dating in Mexico

Ahh dating, the socio-cultural phenomenon that is our mating dance. If there was ever a rule book, it was probably a lie, seeing as to how dating is as ever-changing as the culture we come from. We have a hard enough time trying to figure out the expectations and desires of someone within our own time zone, imagine trying to date outside of it. Maybe we’ve never thought about it until we had to, but if you’re an expat that’s gone out on dates or been “courted” in Mexico, you might have already figured out a few differences. While no nation is a monolith and Mexico is absolutely rich in cultural differences, here’s a few things you may notice if you’re dating in Mexico.

Getting Lost in Translation

Unless you’re a smooth talkin’ cool cat, chances are you find flirting to be flustering and awkward at times. Add a second language to that, and you’ve got quite a romantic comedy in the making. Terms of endearment can also sound strange when outside their native language. For example, calling someone else your orange half might not quite make sense in English, but “media naranja” is a common way to refer to someone who’s your partner.

The use of diminutives in Spanish is also quite popular, as a way to make things sound more cute. This usually happens with nouns, and may also happen with your name. For example, if your name is Michael or Ana, you might get a name change to Miguelito or Anita. Placing a “ito” or “ita” at the end of a word makes it sound smaller and therefore “cuter” even though it is in fact making the word longer.

Or you might get confused if someone calls you a “mamacita” which might sound like mommy, but is more like “hot stuff”. While English is a very pragmatic language, Spanish is one of the romance languages for a reason, and flirting can be incredibly poetic, so if you’re practicing your Spanish, don’t forget to explore past the verb tenses and into the diminutives. 

A Religious Matter

While not every family in Mexico is a practicing Catholic, according to a  study in 2018 , more than half of Mexican citizens attend church on a semi regular basis. And though it may not mean they regularly attend Sunday Mass, important holidays such as Easter and Christmas are usually accompanied by religious ceremonies. 

The Virgin Mary,  more specifically La Virgen de Guadalupe, is a revered symbol in Mexico worn on clothing and carried around in street processions as a holy figure and celebrated at festivals with food and costumes. If you’re dating someone and happen to be with them during one of these holidays, you might be privy to how Mexicans practice their religion. Depending on whether you yourself are a devout Catholic, other religion, or not, this might be something to keep in mind. 

Speaking of religion, the combination of Catholic family values coupled with the community-based approaches of Mexico’s long standing indigenous ancestry make it so that Mexican families are tight knit. To begin with, unlike the USA, children are not expected to leave the home at 18, nor is it uncommon for adults to still live close to their parents once they do move out. Additionally, the nucleus family doesn’t necessarily end with the parents and children, but will generally also include grandparents, uncles and aunts, and of course, cousins. Furthermore, it is customary for Mexicans to know and socialize with their neighbors, and it is part of the culture to greet each other in the streets and stop for chit chat with the vendors who sell your produce.

“Mi casa es su casa” is not just a Spanish phrase we might learn at school, but the very backbone of Mexican culture. In Mexico, “meeting the parents” doesn’t quite mean the same thing as say, in the USA. And coming to a family dinner might look differently depending on where you come from as well. One thing for sure, it’s bound to be enriching. 

Gender Roles

In 2024 there is a lot of discussion regarding how we perform gender roles and cultural nuance is fundamental for our consideration. In Mexico, there are socio-political movements reshaping the culture to a more equal society, however, many of the traditional gender roles remain. Some ways that we might see traditional gender roles played out in dating are for example many men still open doors for women, pull out seats, and more notably will walk on the street side of the sidewalk, “protecting” the woman from oncoming cars.  Women are also generally caretakers, and while many Mexican women have successful careers, some while also being mothers, the image of the independent, self-sufficient, possibly childless woman who “doesn’t need a man” is still an archetype that some Mexican men find challenging regardless of that woman’s nationality. 

Of course even though these are experiences that many people share, they are not symbolic of what to expect as context may vary among age groups, class groups, towns, and most importantly within each individual human being. Being sensitive to other people’s context and working on communication is bound to go well despite cultural and linguistic barriers, and exploring love language cross-cultures can be a deeply gratifying and profound experience.

For the second year in a row, Travel + Leisure readers chose Mexico's San Miguel de Allende as their favorite city in the world, as part of the annual World's Best Awards. That, of course, meant it was also voted the top city in Mexico, besting such scenic cities as Oaxaca and Guadalajara.

Readers rated cities on their sights and landmarks, culture, cuisine, friendliness, shopping, and overall value.

Those who have visited describe San Miguel de Allende as an enchanting city, one with remarkable architecture. The cobblestoned streets and brightly colored Spanish-colonial buildings are a signature of the city. In fact, the 64-block historic center is so unique and picturesque, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception — known locally as "Las Monjas" — is one of San Miguel's most identifiable landmarks. For a very Mexican cultural experience, travelers should also make the trip to the "Sistine Chapel of Mexico" at the Sanctuary of Atotonilco. Its walls are covered in stunning, elaborate religious murals from the 18th century.

Look for local handicrafts at any of the city's street markets, and be sure to hit the gigantic El Tianguis de los Martes held every Tuesday. Baskets, pottery, and brightly embroidered clothing are among the top souvenirs.

Culinary travelers love San Miguel de Allende for its inventive flavors. The city is home to more than 350 markets and restaurants. One of the most acclaimed, Moxi Restaurant , is helmed by Enrique Olvera, who is often cited as one of Mexico's best chefs. He takes classic Mexican recipes and gives them a twist, like tempura shrimp with criolla fries and chipotle mayonnaise.

Before visiting, it's wise to pick up a good pair of comfortable shoes. Travelers can walk pretty much anywhere in the city — until it's the end of the day and it's time to trek up one of the city's steep hills. You can also ride the affordable public bus (about 30 cents) or jump into a reasonably priced taxi.
