Victoria's Secret The Tour '23 Is Here — but How Does It Stack Up Against the Original Fashion Show?

Victoria's Secret left its iconic fashion show model behind in 2018 after much criticism and upheaval at the brand

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is back — but it had a major makeover.

Now branded Victoria's Secret The Tour '23, the streamed event — filmed in Barcelona; Lagos, Nigeria; Bogotá, Colombia; London; and Tokyo — puts a whole new spin on the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show we once knew. Though the fashion event looks pretty much nothing like what it once did, you'll still see some of your favorite models doing what they do best, and you'll still feel the essence of the brand as they celebrate a more diverse group of talent.

As for everything else, let's break it down.

Is Victoria's Secret The Tour '23 Live?

Victoria's Secret The Tour '23 was filmed earlier this year in various cities across the world. The VS 20 collective — a group of artists, designers and filmmakers — was selected in Lagos, Nigeria; Bogotá, Colombia; London; and Tokyo. Segments were filmed in each of these places.

While the models had fittings with the designers in these places, the actual show — or what you would think of as the traditional runway show (without a true runway) — was filmed in Barcelona. A group of models wore pieces from each designers collection, but all of the modeling portions were filmed together in Barcelona, along with an interlude that featured Victoria's Secret pieces that you'd expect in a lingerie fashion show.

All of that's to say none of this is live. It was filmed previously and is currently streaming on Prime Video.

Are There Angel Wings in Victoria's Secret The Tour '23?

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show was known for its Angels and their wings. Models like Adriana Lima, Gisele Bündchen and Alessandra Ambrosio were some of the most iconic Angels in VS history. They would strut the runway wearing all manor of wings and apparatus — some small, some huge — as a symbol of their status as the elite of the brand.

When Victoria's Secret ditched the fashion show in 2019, it also ditched the Angels , moving away from using the iconography completely in stores and in marketing campaigns.

Though the brand still toys with the concept of being angelic — like with its Heavenly Eau de Parfum with Lima as its face — the Angels are no more. So are there wings in The Tour?

Actually there are.

U.K.-based lingerie designer Michaela Stark raided Victoria's Secret headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, and repurposed some old fashion show pieces into three new looks for the show. Those looks — worn by Jade O'Belle , Ceval Omar and Stark herself — all included wings from years past that the designer fashioned into a modern take on the Angel from the brand's history.

Stark, who often bucks trends, wrote on Instagram that she wanted to "prove that angels can represent ALL women." Stark then took aim at previous comments made by former chief marketing officer at Victoria's Secret, Ed Razek. The former exec caused controversy years ago over his comments about  hiring transgender or curvy models  for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and later apologized. He stepped down from his post in August 2019.

What Was the Controversy Surrounding the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show?

Razek's comments in regard to not wanting to hire transgender or curve models for the fashion show were just part of the controversy surrounding the VS Fashion Show and the brand as a whole prior to the rebrand.

In February 2020, Leslie H. Wexner, the longtime chairman and CEO of L Brands, which owns the lingerie giant,  stepped down, following scrutiny  for his business ties with  Jeffrey Epstein .

In August 2019, more than 100 models signed an open petition written to former Victoria's Secret CEO John Mehas by The Model Alliance, which  called upon the lingerie giant to protect its models against sexual misconduct . The group wrote another letter to the CEO alleging a " culture of misogyny and abuse " in February 2020. Mehas stepped down in November 2020 and was  replaced by Martin Waters .

Thus, Victoria's Secret rebranded, dropping the Angels, focusing more on celebrating women and pushing for more diversity and inclusivity in its marketing, branding and clothing options. It launched two new initiatives: the VS Collective and the Victoria's Secret Global Fund for Women's Cancer.

The Victoria's Secret Global Fund for Women's Cancer will donate "at least $5 million annually to examine and address racial and gender inequities and unlock new innovations that improve cancer outcomes for all women," a press release stated in 2021.

The VS Collective promised to work with new brand ambassadors — including Priyanka Chopra and Megan Rapinoe — to "create new associate programs, revolutionary product collections, compelling and inspiring content, and rally support for causes vital to women."

Is There Body Diversity in Victoria's Secret The Tour '23?

A complaint against Victoria's Secret and the fashion show years ago was that it didn't feature enough body diversity, but with the rebrand in recent years that focused on advocating for women and celebrating women.

Between the VS Collective, new campaigns that featured more diversity and a clear push for the brand to be more inclusive , it appeared that the lingerie powerhouse was at a turning point where it would truly be a place where shoppers and fans would see more than just one body type modeling the clothes.

So did that happen with The Tour '23?

There was more body diversity featured than ever before in a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, with names like Paloma Elsesser and Candice Huffine among the curve models. While too many brands stick to only having one curve model on a runway at a time, Victoria's Secret at least pushed the envelope enough to have several featured — and they weren't covered up. Their curves were celebrated.

Is There a Runway Show in Victoria's Secret The Tour '23?

In a traditional sense, no, there's no runway. The models stomp through what looks to be an abandoned building in Barcelona, surrounded by nature (though the Tokyo set of models come running through the streets).

The setting still provides a place for the clothes to be shown off, but it's not a runway like fans have seen in years past.

The models are also not wearing what they have in years past. They're not wearing lingerie from Victoria's Secret. Instead they're wearing designs from the VS 20, which is all handcrafted pieces made by these artists around the world and created to show off their talents.

That being said, there is a break between the cities where the models wear their VS lingerie and expected blinged-out dresses for a bit of a throwback to the old-school fashion shows — complete with Naomi Campbell strutting to Bree Runway's "That Girl."

Are Any of the Former Angels in Victoria's Secret The Tour '23?

Yes, a few of the Angels have returned, even if they're no longer Angels. Lily Aldridge, Taylor Hill, Adriana Lima and Candice Swanepoel are all back for The Tour.

You'll also see other familiar faces, including Campbell, Gigi Hadid (who also narrates the show), Hailey Bieber , Emily Ratajkowski , Quannah Chasinghorse, Valentina Sampaio, Julia Fox and Lila Moss.

Is There a Musical Performance in Victoria's Secret The Tour '23?

Doja Cat is the headlining performer in this year's show. While in years past, the performers for the show usually take to the runway while the models parade around them, Doja Cat instead performs alone, making for a completely different vibe.

Goyo, a musician from the house of Bogotá, also performs while wearing one of the looks by designer Melissa Valdes.

Past VS Fashion Show performers have included Justin Bieber , The Weeknd , Harry Styles and Taylor Swift .

What's the Final Verdict on Victoria's Secret The Tour '23?

When PEOPLE asked Hill at the event celebrating The Tour '23 in New York City during Fashion Week earlier this month how this show compares to shows past, she answered it very simply.

"They are completely not comparable at all, whatsoever," Hill said. "The overall experience has been really different. I think they're both really great, and I'm so happy I get to experience both of them. I'm just really excited to see their new take on the show in this time."

Lima said much the same — that it's virtually impossible to compare the two formats because they're drastically different. Despite being Victoria's Secret at the core, they are two completely different shows.

"The whole experience is different for everybody," Lima told PEOPLE at the NYFW event. "The fashion show itself is going to be a totally different form — not the usual runway as you think. There will be a runway, there will be a walk, but also fashion designers, poets and musicians will be celebrated."

The Tour '23 is pretty much nothing like the old Victoria's Secret Fashion Show — and some viewers are going to like that and some viewers are going to hate that. The brand addressed the diversity issue that so many complained about but also completely changed the essence of the show. While it's commendable to champion women and spotlight creatives from around the world — especially with their handcrafted creations that are so beautifully done — it feels like there's a disconnect to highlight clothes that you aren't actually selling, when that is usually the point of a fashion show.

Highlights come in the form of the models doing what they do best — showing off the wares and having fun while doing so. Hadid's narration throughout is perhaps the best part of the entire show. She brings an element of humor and authenticity to her role as narrator, making it feel like your best friend is sitting in the room with you telling you what's coming next.

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is making a comeback—and expect it to be bigger, better, and more inclusive than ever.

Today, the lingerie company announced the Victoria's Secret World Tour, a reimagining of their annual iconic fashion show that last aired in 2018. The live event, which will be streamed and made into a feature-length documentary, plans to showcase the talents of 20 designers from across the globe alongside custom Victoria's Secret creations.

"This film is the ultimate expression of the Victoria’s Secret brand transformation," Raúl Martinez, the company's EVP and head creative director, said in a press release shared with BAZAAR . "It will be driven by fashion, glamour and entertainment with a nod to beloved iconography from the past but in a bold, redefined way. We are so honored to offer our platform and have it explored through the lens and artistry of global creatives who celebrate the individuality of women’s stories and perspectives."

Ahead, everything to know about the Victoria's Secret World Tour.

The film will drop in September.

The Victoria's Secret World Tour documentary will reportedly premiere this September. The press release notes that the show "will be streamed internationally and culminate in a live fashion event this fall."

Designers, artists, dancers, and musicians from across the world will showcase their own collections on the runway.

The documentary will follow the behind-the-scenes process of 20 global creatives from the cities of Bogotá, Lagos, London, and Tokyo (dubbed the VS20) as they create four fashion collections. These four collections will be staged on the runway alongside the brand's custom designs.

From Bogotá are fashion designer Melissa Valdes, filmmaker Cristina Sánchez Salamanca, painter Lorena Torres, choreographer Piscis, and musician Goyo. Representing Lagos are fashion designer Bubu Ogisi, filmmaker Korty, artist Eloghosa Osunde, artist Ashley Okoli, and musician and photographer Wavy the Creator. The London creatives include designer Supriya Lele, filmmaker Margot Bowman, artist and writer Ebun Sodipo, lingerie designer Michaela Stark, and artist Phoebe Collings. Finally, the Tokyo VS20 members are comprised of designer Jenny Fax, filmmaker Umi Ishihara, painter Kaito Itsuki, dancer Aoi Yamada, and artist Kom-I.

Will the original "angels" make a comeback?

It's unclear for now if supermodels and former Victoria's Secret runway mainstays such as Bella and Gigi Hadid, Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, and more would make cameos for the new documentary and live spectacle. Considering the brand has gone in a new direction as of late, it's safe to say the new "collective" will feature mostly new faces.

Victoria’s Secret is giving customers an inside look at its upcoming fashion show.

The retailer is debuting an immersive “The Tour Experience” on the top floor of its New York City flagship later this month in conjunction with its Victoria’s Secret World Tour fashion show, which will debut on Prime Video on Sept. 26. 

The in-store experience was created as an extension of the Victoria’s Secret World Tour, which is a reimagination of the retailer’s long-running fashion show.

The in-store experience will feature all looks presented during the Victoria’s Secret World Tour show, which are created by four designers from Lagos; Tokyo; Bogotà, Colombia; and London. The designers also looked to the Victoria’s Secret archives to reimagine some of the best-known Angel wings that have been presented at past fashion shows. These creations will be on display at the store’s flagship.

“The Tour Experience” will include a Champagne bar with signature cocktails and mocktails that were inspired by Victoria’s Secret fragrances. Victoria’s Secret enlisted chef Sumaiya Bangee to create custom desserts for the Champagne bar, which also take inspiration from Victoria’s Secret well-known motifs and colors. 

“It’s a sensorial experience that we’re excited to just share with the customer,” Gilkey said. “It’s a pleasure to be able to do that for the brand and just for the customer. We’re a new Victoria’s Secret and that’s what we’re celebrating. The Tour is the ultimate expression of our brand transformation.”

The New Victoria’s Secret Show Confronts Its Past

It's been four years since Victoria's Secret last hosted its iconic annual fashion show -- and they went all out for their 2023 World Tour event, held at The Manhattan Center on Sept. 6, 2023.

Some of the biggest names in fashion and entertainment turned out for the gala in truly jaw-dropping looks, with celebs in attendance giving the catwalk models a run for their money when it came to stunning styles. Check out all the best pink carpet looks from this year's big return show.

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show coming back with 'glamour, runway, fun, wings,' CEO says

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is coming back, and it will be much like it was years ago.

"The show will deliver precisely what our customers have been asking for, the glamour, runway, fashion, fun, wings, entertainment, all through a powerful modern lens reflecting who we are today," Victoria's Secret CEO Martin Waters told analysts Thursday on a conference call to discuss the company's first-quarter financial results. "We're thrilled to share this iconic property later this year."

The retailer didn't yet say when or where the show will be held.

The annual event was launched in 1995 and made its network TV debut in 2001.

The show featured elaborately costumed lingerie worn by the brand's "Angels."

The 1999 show's live webcast became famous as the event that "shut down the internet," drawing so many viewers that the website crashed. Apple founder Steve Jobs later called the 1999 webcast and ensuing crash as one of the 10 seminal events in the history of the internet.

The audience began to wane in the final years of the show as Victoria's Secret and the fashion show had been derided as out of touch with women during the era of the #MeToo movement .

The last show was in 2018, and the retailer said in 2019 that the show would no longer be on television and that it needed to rethink the event.

Last year, Victoria's Secret had a show that was focused on a movie built around 20 artists and creative women in four cities − Bogota, Columbia; London; Tokyo; and Lagos, Nigeria − along with, of course, highlighting Victoria's Secret designs. The show was streamed internationally.

The movie marked the latest of what has been a dramatic shift since CEO and Chairman Leslie H. Wexner  stepped away in 2020  and the company split from Bath & Body Works  the following year .

Victoria's Secret announced its plan for the return of the show on Instagram and TikTok last month. The retailer said the show will kick off its holiday sales campaign.

"It's going to be all about glamour, going to be feature runway, it's going to be fashion, it's going to be fun, wings, entertainment, but through the modern lens of who we are today," Waters said. "So, not exactly a repeat of who we used to be, but picking up on the moments that people enjoyed most about our Fashion Show historically."

Waters said the show will be a focus on Victoria's Secret merchandise.

"It needs to focus our merchandise, not other people's," he said. "It needs to be fun, it needs to be less ethereal than we've been before, needs to be commercial, mainstream, and a great celebratory kickoff to the holiday season filled with joy."

Cricket salads, lab-grown steaks and azolla burgers could be staples on British menus in 30 years' time, according to the Co-op. 

Using AI and research from experts from FixOurFood and the University of York, the retailer predicted what mealtimes could look like in 2054. 

They predict a rise in urban indoor farming across Britain, which will in turn see lab-grown meat and seafood - cultivated from animal tissues to produce steaks, burgers, tuna and lobster - become more mainstream.

Another part of the report suggested climate change would result in the likes of avocados and olives being grown in Surrey by 2054 - meaning less reliance on importing vegetables. 

"By 2054, British people will have edible insects on their dinner plate, and we may see the crushing up of crickets quicker than wholegrain," project researcher Bob Doherty said. 

"We may even see the introduction of 3D-printed food. As we navigate the challenges of climate change, we'll need to embrace these innovations to ensure that we can feed a growing population sustainably."

After spending the morning reacting to the positive news on inflation (and less positive news on interest rates), we're going to start posting other personal finance and consumer news again now.

We'll still have any reaction coming in on the economy.

Our  economics and data editor Ed Conway  has been poring over this morning's data drop from the Office for National Statistics. 

"In one sense this is a watershed moment," he says, inflation having dropped to the target 2%.

But looking at the data another way - at overall inflation over the last three years rather than annual figures - the numbers tell a different story. 

By doing so, you can see there's closer to a 20% increase in prices since the start of the cost of living crisis - rather than the 2% increase we've recorded in the 12 months from May last year to May 2024. 

And this figure - basically, prices - is still going up, just slower than it was before.

We have one more chart to show you in response to inflation having fallen to the target of 2% in May.

Like much of today's data, it is primarily good news - wages are going up significantly more than inflation.

For workers to whom this applies, it's rightly a cause for some cheer after a period of falling living standards and skyrocketing prices.

But for the economy, there's a flipside - high wage growth is inflationary, as businesses either have to absorb wage increases or put up prices. It also means people have more money to spend - again, when this happens prices tend to go up faster.

May's fall in inflation cannot disguise "the worst period for living standards in modern times", Trades Union Congress (TUC) general secretary Paul Nowak has said.

Reacting to today's data, he said: "Over the last three years UK families have suffered the highest price rises in the G7 - with inflation going up more over that period than it usually does over an entire decade.

"Ministers can try to rewrite history all they like. But the Conservatives have presided over the worst period for living standards in modern times.

"Food and energy bills have surged. Rents and mortgages have skyrocketed. And real wages are still worth less than in 2008."

There are nearly 50 affiliated unions under the TUC banner with a total of about 5.5 million members.

We've been reporting how services inflation - which is much higher than the headline rate at 5.7% - could thwart hopes of an interest rate cut in June or August.

That's potentially bad news for borrowers - but Britons could benefit from savings rates remaining higher for longer than previously thought.

Mark Hicks, head of Active Savings at investment platform Hargreaves Lansdown, said: "Lower inflation will be music to the ears of savers, because if you hold cash in a competitive account, you'll be significantly outstripping inflation. 

"Right now, you can still earn more than 5% on everything from easy access accounts to those fixed for up to two years.

"Unfortunately, most people won't be making anything like this, because high street easy access branch rates are far less generous, and in most cases, they pay less than inflation. 

"At times like this it's key to check out the rates from online banks and savings platforms, which tend to pay more than the high street giants."

From its 40-year high of 11.1% in October 2022, the headline rate of inflation – the consumer prices index (CPI) – is back to the Bank of England's 2% target rate.

The government, naturally, will seek to take credit for it. Rishi Sunak, after all, promised to halve inflation last year and was quick to point to that when it happened.

It was a piece of chutzpah that brought to mind the old saying "success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan".

If anyone deserves credit for bringing down inflation to the target rate, it is arguably the Bank of England, whose interest rate rises from December 2021 to August last year bore down on demand and on some of the inflationary pressures that can build in an economy when demand is too high.

In so far as the government can take credit for bringing down inflation, it is because - since the debacle of Liz Truss's short spell in 10 Downing Street - Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt have restored order to the public finances,  calming the panic in markets which erupted when Ms Truss sought to introduce £45bn worth of unfunded tax cuts . 

From the depths it plumbed after the mini-budget in September 2022, sterling has rallied by 22% against the US dollar and by 9% against the euro.

All things being equal, that has brought down the cost of goods and services that the UK buys from the US and from countries in the Eurozone, which may at the margins have had an impact on inflation.

In other ways, though, government policies have helped push up inflation. Public sector pay between February and April this year, the latest period for which figures were available, was up 6.4% year on year. That obviously feeds into higher prices. 

The government has also just raised the national living wage by 9.8%, the biggest increase in history, which again will feed into higher prices, particularly in sectors such as hospitality. The chancellor has also actively increased inflation by raising taxes on tobacco, as he did last year.

So the government cannot really take that much of the credit for inflation falling to target.

The Bank's Monetary Policy Committee deserves more. So, too, do some of the UK's retailers. The latest figures published by the British Retail Consortium suggest Shop Price Inflation was running at an annual rate of just 0.6% in May - down from 1.3% in March. In other words, by bearing down on prices, retailers are contributing strongly to the decline in inflation. The market is competitive and consumers are benefiting.

In truth, though, most of the heavy lifting in bringing down inflation has come from so-called "base effects" – the impact of the corresponding "base" the previous year.

Prices can still be rising, but contribute to a lower headline rate of inflation. If the price of an item in the inflation basket was rising by 10% in April last year but was only rising by 5% in April this year, that automatically feeds through to a lower headline rate of inflation.

Inflation took off in 2022 mainly because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which pushed up the price of oil and – thanks to Ukraine's position as one of the world's biggest exporters of corn, seed oils, wheat and rapeseed – a whole clutch of foodstuffs.

It had another boost when, at the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023, China suddenly relaxed its COVID restrictions – unleashing a big burst of demand from the world's second-largest economy for commodities like oil. That pushed up prices elsewhere.

We have seen big falls in the energy price cap - a major contributor to lower inflation. Some of the biggest elements in the UK inflation basket - food and non-alcoholic drinks, clothing and footwear, furniture and household goods – are not rising in price to the extent that they were a year ago and certainly not to the extent they were in the autumn of 2022.

That is the main reason inflation has come back down to the Bank's target rate.

A version of this analysis was first published a month ago as inflation dipped to 2.3%

The question arises because the inflation spike was caused largely by external factors - the Ukraine war and subsequent energy crisis.

These factors have subsided, inflation is dropping in comparable economies around the world, and the key lever to squash price rises (putting up interest rates) is with the Bank of England, not the government.

But Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride says the government can, "in part", take credit.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Can we take credit? In part, yes, because controlling inflation is a matter both of monetary policy, which is interest rates and the Bank of England, but it's also an accommodative fiscal policy to make sure you work in the same direction as the Bank.

"So we had tough decisions to take - for example, around higher-than-inflation wage demands and how we responded to that to keep control of those wage-cost pressures within the economy."

House prices in the UK rose for the second month in a row in April, data from the Office for National Statistics shows. 

Prices rose by an annual 1.1% to an average of £281,000 after a 0.9% rise in March, figures show.

This will be welcome to some, with Britain's housing market continuing to show signs of recovery from the slowdown in late 2022 and 2023 which was spurred by the surge in mortgage rates.

We also have official - and slightly more up to date - data on the rental market.

Average UK private rents increased by 8.7% in the 12 months to May - down from 8.9% in April.

In the different regions, this looks like an average rental price of £1,301 in England, £736 in Wales, and £957 in Scotland.

This chart shows which regions are driving that increase in rent in England - with London unsurprisingly leading the way. 

Inflation returning to the 2% target is unquestionably positive news - memories are still fresh of 11.1% price rises noted in October 2022's peak.

While nothing like that is expected again any time soon - unless there is a major global shock - the Bank of England has been making noises for a while that it does expect inflation to tick up again later this year.

This could contribute to caution from the Bank in cutting interest rates.

Paula Bejarano Carbo, an economist at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, said the Bank should be wary of inflation "rebounding" from June onwards.

"Given that today's data indicates that core inflation remains elevated, this rebound might be sharper than expected," she said. 

Analysts at Pantheon Macroeconomics see inflation approaching 3% again as we near winter 2024.

They said this morning: "We expect inflation to hold at 2% in June and then to rise to 2.9% by November. 

"Food and non-energy goods inflation have no further to fall now they have converged to producer output price inflation.

"Meanwhile, Ofgem will likely hike the utility price cap by 12% in October after wholesale energy costs have risen. 

"We look for CPI services inflation to fall only to 4.8% at the end of 2024."
