East Village & Lower East Side Vegan Food Tour

Why not add a vegan food tour to your NYC itinerary?

This is the original New York vegan walking tour and our most popular walking tour in New York.

Your expert local guide takes you to some of the best eateries in the city.

About this tour

This vegan food tour meets right across from Gandhi Garden in Union Square and from there, we will start our vegan foodie adventure. In total, we will cover about 2 miles/3 kilometers and stop for various bites along the way on this walking tour in New York.

Four days a week, the Farmers market is in session and it is always worth a visit.

At least five different food-stops are included in your tour and you will not leave this tour hungry.

Food stops vary depending on the day of the week and size of the group but you might get to try cookies, macaroons, Szechuan chinese, pizza, chocolate, cheese, soft serve ice cream ...all vegan, of course! This tour is also gluten-free-friendly, but please let us know in advance.

This tour is different to sightseeing tours you have done before!

This tour is 125 $ per person and includes food tastings at all our stops .

A friendly, licensed New York City tour guide accompanies the tour (they love tips - like everyone does here).

Group size is limited to 10 people since we want to offer a personal experience and often take you to small places which are not on everyone's radar.

You can book this tour here or buy a gift card for this tour here

 Brunch walking tour

This morning, instead of having breakfast/brunch at one place, we’ll take a breakfast/brunch tour and grab bites from different places - think vegan croissants, bagels, vegan cheese and the like!

While noshing our way through town, we will also get to see new neighborhoods and take in as much of the city as we can.

After the tour, you are free to explore at your leisure before meeting up for a group dinner.

Tonight´s dinner will be on the fancier side, such as Hangawi , Planta Queen or Dirt Candy  feel free to dress up a litte but no need if you do not feel like it.

vegan tours nyc

We will start the day with a wonderful vegan breakfast.

Walking tour Highline

This morning, after breakfast, we will visit the High Line for a private walking tour.

You will learn the rich history of the High Line and how it has developed to what it is today - a haven for wildlife and a gorgeous place to escape the city noise. The architecture surrounding it is amazing as well.

There is also changing art installations on display, so no visit to the High Line is ever  the same as the previous one.

Enjoy free time to explore Chelsea and Greenwich and West Village this afternoon. Plenty of spots close-by offer great vegan food - recommendations will be given, of course.

Why not visit a museum such as the Whitney or head up to the top of The Edge?

Today´s dinner will be a surprise - for not, at least. All participants of this trip will get a say in where we will go for our last dinner together. A few weeks out, we will send out a poll in which you can cast your vote! It could be Mediterranean, Southern, Carribean, Ethiopian or something totally different.

 "Early Bird" bird watching

For the early birds amongst us,  join us as we head to Central Park for a professionally led bird watching tour. You might be surprised to find out how many different bird species live in and migrate through the city.

Brunch in Brooklyn & farewell NYC

We are heading to Brooklyn for brunch!

Afterwards, feel free to hang out in the area for the day depending on when you have to leave this afternoon. There is a ton to do here - hanging by the waterfront, visiting a local brewery or hitting (vintage) stores.

Sadly, it is time to wrap up our weekend together but we hope to see you again soon!

A Vegan Tour of NYC

Dirt Candy

Post written by Leo Babauta .

Eva and I just got back from a trip to New York City, and we loved it – it was Eva’s first visit, and our first trip where we were both vegan!

To celebrate this incredible occasion, we went on a vegan tour of New York City. What an amazing experience.

I’m sharing our experience not to brag, but to help other vegans who might take a trip to NYC in the future (recommended). And even if you’re not vegan, the first 6-7 places on our list serve absolutely great food that anyone would love, herbivores and omnivores alike.

Some caveats: We only had 8 days in New York City, and we spent most of them in Manhattan, so this list will be very limited – we couldn’t possibly get to them all! We are also NYC newbies, so it’s very likely we missed some great ones.

However, I did my research and got recommendations from as many people as possible, and focused on the ones with the best reputations. We got to a lot of good ones, but did miss a few top spots on our list (listed in the bottom section below).

Amazing NYC Vegan Restaurants

So here are the restaurants we loved – note that many at the top of the list are more special occasion than everyday dining, but this trip was definitely a special occasion :

  • Candle 79 . One of the best restaurants we’ve ever been to, period. Highly recommended. I put this on level with Millenium in San Francisco – really good gourmet vegan food. Every dish, from the amuse bouche to the appetizers to the entrees and dessert, were phenomenal. We loved it so much we bought the cookbook. There’s also a Candle Cafe, which we didn’t get to. Both are on the Upper East Side. Reservations highly recommended. Website .
  • Blossom . Probably our second favorite, another gourmet vegan experience. Blossom has several locations now, from the main Blossom restaurant to the more casual Blossom Cafes to Blossom du Jour (takeout) and Blossom Bakery (vegan baked goods!). We went to all but the bakery (it was closed when we went) and loved them all. Website .
  • Pure Food & Wine . All vegan, all raw, really lovely atmosphere. I’m not usually a fan of raw food, but this was an exception. The lasagna was great, along with some really good sushi and dessert. And you can pig out and still feel healthy. Website .
  • Hangawi . So good – vegan Korean in a nice setting. You take off your shoes, sit at low tables, order a stone bowl that comes sizzling to your table in a iron pot, mix in just the right amount of spicy sauce with the brown rice and veggies and tofu, stir it all up and devour the yummy goodness. Then crave it for a week or two after. Website .
  • Dirt Candy . Vegetarian but everything can be made vegan. Tiny little spot in the East Village, get reservations because there are like two tables (OK, maybe six, but still). Lovely dishes, low lighting, awesome. Website .
  • Baby Cakes . All-vegan bakery in the Lower East Side with delicious cupcakes, muffins, donuts and more. Not only vegan – many of their things are gluten-free and/or sugar-free, if that’s what you need, and they all taste great. Go there, stuff your face, then do a run through Central Park to burn it off. Website
  • Champs Family Bakery . A little funky diner in hip Williamsburg, Brooklyn, all vegan comfort food. We had brunch here, with things like pancakes and tofu scramble and some kind of veggie & veg sausage rice bowl that Eva liked. Yelp .
  • Franchia . This is owned by the same folks as Hangawi, but is a more casual tea and vegan cafe. I enjoyed the first-picked green tea. They also have the delicious stone bowls in a more casual setting. I would eat here weekly if I were in NYC. Website .
  • Gobo . There seem to be a dozen vegetarian/vegan Asian restaurants in NYC. Gobo is one of them, and a good choice if you’re hankering for this kind of food. We enjoyed our dishes (stir-fry noodles and a mango “chicken” with plum sauce) but weren’t blown away. Website .
  • Caravan of Dreams . Organic vegan cafe in the East Village that has an eclectic menu – you’ll find food from Italy, Asia, Mexico, Spain and the Middle East. We went here for brunch and had vegan waffles and nachos and more. Website .
  • ’sNice . Lovely little vegetarian cafe in Soho (with locations in the West Village and Brooklyn that we didn’t visit), with tons of vegan options for breakfast and lunch (sandwiches and salads). We went here for breakfast, loved it. Website .
  • Zen Palate . Vegetarian Asian food with locations near Union Square, the theater district and Murray Hill. We just ordered the sizzling medallions with brown rice, which I recommend. Website .
  • Stogo . Vegan ice cream! ‘Nuff said. Website .
  • One Lucky Duck . Tiny raw, vegan, organic takeaway food shop, owned by the same folks as Pure Food & Wine. They have a couple of locations, including one in Chelsea Market. I’m not a raw food fan, but their desserts are rich and nice. The raw granola has a good chewy texture that I like. Website .
  • Ruby Bakes . Vegan donuts that we happened upon at a stall in Hester Street Fair in the Lower East Side. The donuts are not only vegan, but free from nuts and gluten as well. And baked, so they’re healthy(er)! Really good, and pretty. Website .

Photos of some of our food .

And a Foursquare map .

Two Incredible Vegan Shops

  • Moo Shoes . Eva needed some comfortable walking shoes for our trip, as she’d only brought sandals and it was too cold for that. So we found Moo Shoes , which has an online store I’d seen before but also a great shop in the Lower East Side. All kinds of vegan shoes for men and women, along with belts, bags and more. Cruelty-free kicks!
  • Vaute Couture . It was colder in NYC than we’d expected, so we took the subway to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to find this cute little vegan coat shop – fashionable, warm, cruelty-free … perfect! I highly recommend checking these guys out. Eva & I both ended up getting a coat. Website .

Places We Missed

  • Lula’s Sweet Apothecary . Supposed to be amazing vegan frozen desserts, but we just never found the right time to go. Oh well, it’s always good to save something to do for the next visit!
  • Dun-Well Donuts . I was told that this Brooklyn vegan donut place would change my life – especially the vegan ice cream on donuts. There are like 200 flavors of donuts. Next time, Dun-Well, you will be mine. Website
  • Angelica Kitchen . Supposed to be an excellent date-night option with healthy, tasty choices, we just couldn’t fit it in. Website .
  • Kajitsu . Michellin-starred vegan Japanese. How can you go wrong? But we eat shojin (vegan Japanese) food all the time at Cha-Ya here in San Francisco, so it just didn’t excite us. Website .
  • Peacefood Vegan Kitchen & Cafe . Don’t know much about it, but looks interesting. Website .
  • Maoz . Vegetarian falafel chain – we’ve actually been to locations in London and Barcelona and loved them. I had a craving for these wonderful falafels while we were in NYC but didn’t get a chance to go. Website .
  • Tamarind . Fine-dining vegetarian Indian restaurant that sounded interesting (and their newest location was just minutes away from our hotel in Tribeca) but we’ve had lots of Indian food, so we didn’t go. Website .
  • Sacred Chow . Completely vegan cafe that looks good, with lots of comfort food and a great-looking brunch on weekends. We nearly made it here. Website .
  • Terri . Looks like an all-vegan cafe with sandwiches, wraps, salads, smoothies, juices. Website
  • Blossom Bakery . I mentioned this above, but it looks excellent. Vegan baked goods of all kinds. We did try a cookie and cupcake from here when we visited the Blossom du Jour takeout joint next door, and they were good. Website .
  • Red Bamboo Soul Cafe . Vegetarian and vegan fusion food with homemade mock-meats and Asian, Creole and Carribean influences. Also have vegan ice cream from Klein’s in Brooklyn for dessert. Website .
  • Wild Ginger . Pan-Asian vegan food. Website
  • Soy & Sake . Japanese and Pan-Asian vegetarian food. Website .

Is this list complete? No, of course not. We did what we could on our vegan tour of NYC, and loved it. New York is a vegan’s paradise, with more options than anywhere else I’ve been, including San Francisco (which is great for vegans). If you’re passing through town, definitely do 1-2 of the places near the top of our list!

Vegan NYC | Best Restaurants, Food Tours, Hotels & More

While we didn't get to many of the fully vegan restaurants during our short time in New York City, we were on a mission to eat all of the vegan versions of the fast food the city is famous for: pizza, bagels, donuts and ice cream, because why not? These were our highlights to eating our way through the Big Apple in just three days.

New York Vegan Food Tours

Vegan Eats in the East Village  – This walking tour offers a great overview of the many vegan options in the East Village, one of NYC’s prime locations for vegan food . The tour is suitable for vegans and non-vegans alike. We will sample at least five different foods, both savory and sweet.

Taste Brooklyn’s Global Vegan Food  – Get ready to taste the colorful and creative international flavors of the Brooklyn vegan food scene. This experience is for anyone who enjoys trying new foods, eating like a local and exploring global cuisines. Enjoy delicious five-course meal across five different, renowned vegan restaurants. Restaurants have been selected for their innovative vegan-friendly menus, unique origin stories & delectable dishes.

Vegan Food Crawl in Artsy Brooklyn  – Explore all the best places in the area to get the best vegan and vegetarian foods from all different ethnic cuisines. There are many options in Brooklyn. Tour secret locations in the Bushwick area and stop at three places to try local appetizer-sized tastes and drinks.

New York Vegan Restaurants

With multiple locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, this long-established New York pizza franchise has several vegan options as well as some gluten free pizzas too. We visited the location in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, one of the oldest in the city. It's a brightly coloured and cosy little place, great for people watching. The vegan cheese was melty and satisfying and feels like a good deal given the location.

  • Address : 201 W 11th Street, Manhattan 10014
  • Foursquare ; Facebook ; Instagram ; website

Ess-a-Bagel

Another place with multiple locations around Manhattan, this old-fashioned and not-at-all hipster bagel joint is a quintessential New York experience. With a mind-boggling array of bagels and spreads, almost all of which have a vegan option, it's perfect for a large snack or small meal. The tofu cream cheeses were so rich and creamy, I doubted for a moment if they were actually vegan! Everything is wrapped ready to take away, but at least at the location we visited on 3rd Avenue, you can sit inside and eat there without being bothered if you wish.

  • Address : 831 3rd Ave, Manhattan 10022

Vegan Divas

This minuscule café serves all vegan cakes, muffins and donuts. Mostly they do take away, but there are three tiny tables you can sit at although all drinks are served in paper cups regardless. The chocolate cupcake we had was moist and pleasant, and the donuts were fine: baked rather than fried, so not as greasy as I was hoping for! A decent option to satisfy your sweet tooth if you're passing by.

  • Address : 1437 1st Ave, Manhattan 10021

Right around the corner from where we stayed in Brooklyn, this place served as our breakfast stop more than once. With a nice range of bagels and a huge array of spreads and toppings, just ask for a recommendation to get something vegan: the friendly staff will happily help you out.

  • Address : 189 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn 11211
  • Foursquare ; Facebook ; website

Dun-Well Doughuts

We visited here twice in our short time in New York because well: doughnuts! There are like a million flavours (that might be an exaggeration) and they're all great. Perhaps a little sweeter than I was ready for, but still worth coming back for. On Wednesdays they have two-for-one on all doughnuts, so come hungry! They serve all the hot drinks you'd expect too as well as homemade milkshakes in the summer. Everything is vegan.

  • Address : 222 Montrose Ave, Brooklyn 11206

Vinnie's Pizzeria

With about a third of their options being vegan, this relaxed, homely place served giant slices generously filled with toppings. There are also tasty garlic dough balls for extra carbs and the staff are cute which definitely doesn't hurt. You can eat in or take away and it makes for a great quick and easy lunch stop.

  • Address : 148 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn 11211

Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream

Dotted around the city with a few outlets and an ice cream truck, Van Leeuwen is relatively new on the New York ice cream scene. Their location in Brooklyn is tiny but cosy and has almost as many vegan as non-vegan flavours, thankfully none of which are sorbets! It's a little pricey, but portions are generous and the fully loaded sundaes are definitely worth it if you're feeling like indulging.

  • Address : 620 Manhattan Ave, Brooklyn 11222

Vegan-Friendly Hotels in New York

Archer Hotel – This property is located near a variety of shops, vegan dining options and well-known attractions like the Empire State Building, The New Public Library and Times Square. The in-house restaurant, David Burke Restaurant, is a popular spot to enjoy a meal and they offer a variety of vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. Guests can also enjoy the rooftop terrace and the cosy lounge bar in the evening for a drink.

Recommended Hotels in New York

While not specifically vegan-friendly, this shortlist of our favorite hotels has been hand-selected to provide with a variety hotel options in the city to consider if you’re visiting New York.

Andaz 5 th  Ave  – boutique hotel across from the iconic New York Public Library. The spacious rooms feel like exclusive New York lofts, with 12-foot ceilings and plenty of natural light. The property has a restaurant, fitness center and spa onsite.

Hotel Beacon – the historic Hotel Beacon is in the heart of Manhattan's Upper West Side neighborhood and offers apartment-style rooms and two-bedroom suites. Stretch out, relax, and surround yourself with culture and experiences.

Incentra Village Hotel – Occupying two brownstone townhouses, this Greenwich Village hotel is a Victorian-style inn originally built in 1841 with a kitchenette provided in each room.

The GEM Hotel – boutique hotel located in Chelsea with a rooftop and fitness center. Walking distance to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.

There are many sites for apartment rentals including Airbnb and Vrbo. Prices are generally comparable to budget hotels, especially if you’re willing to get a room in a shared apartment.

Vegan Events in New York

New York Vegan Shop Up – This is an awesome event in Bushwick Brooklyn called Vegan Shop-Up, an all vegan pop up market that happens monthly. At this market I tried my first vegan macaron, got lunch at an all-vegan Ethiopian food stand and pretty much just drooled everywhere. Bushwick is a pretty cool neighborhood. It’s got that industrial artsy vibe that happens when old warehouses get converted to artist studios and there is street art everywhere and quirky little housing. Bushwick has some cute cafes and food; the buildings are lower here, only a few stories and it doesn’t feel crowded at all. Inside there was everything from an all-vegan chocolatier called Lagusta’s Luscious to more cookies to raw vegan soups, to raw granola health food bites, to chai tea to a hot sauce stand.  The Cinnamon Snail, a famous vegan food truck in NYC, also came for a visit.  Below is a view of the event from the outside. There were a lot of stands inside and lots outside as well. This one was selling a vegan soul food plate with sautéed greens and a vegan mac-n-cheese that looked awesome. The vendors are always changing so the excitement and number of things to eat is pretty much endless…and all vegan!

What an awesome food tour! My husband and I had an absolute blast. Verena, our guide, was so lovely and easy to talk to. She took us to some really incredible spots! A few of which I've already revisited. I highly recommend this your if you are vegan, interested in vegan or just like great food! Also, come hungry. The tour includes so much!

The PUMPKIN DINNER @Die Stammkneipe was a wonderful surprise! The PUMPKIN SOUP was very delicate with special flavors and the PUMPKIN KALE SALAD was unbeatable with nice touches of pomegranate and pecan. We simply love it! Light and perfect! Thanks! Hopefully we will have it incorporated into the local menu and being able to try this unique seasoning here more often!

I had the pleasure of joining the Gemüslichkeit Dinner featuring squash on September 9. Absolutely delicious dinner and fantastic experience. I'm not a vegan, but left the dinner definitely wanting to try more vegan dishes. The dinner setting was intimate and friendly, with everyone (about 12 people) sitting together and sharing dishes family style. Verena warmly welcomed everyone and introduced each dish. Everything was so delicious and well presented. The German beer menu (ordered from the DSK Brooklyn next door) is one of the best and most extensive I have seen. The dinner is such a fantastic value (there was so much food I lost count of the number of courses), and such a great opportunity to try fresh and seasonal vegetables, I will definitely be back!

Photo of G K.

My gf and I (and our dog!) went for the vegan "Thanksliving" dinner. Gf is vegetarian, I am not. We both loved all the dishes and Verena's hospitality is unmatched. She even gave my dog a treat bag. My favorite was the sweet potato/marshmallow/pecan casserole and gf's favorite was the roasted cauliflower. In addition to the delicious meal, it was very entertaining to meet the other diners at our communal table. Would definitely go again to the next dinner.

Ultimate NYC Vegan Guide: Where to Eat, Shop, & Explore in 2024

' src=

Is New York City Vegan-Friendly?

Is the sky blue?! NYC is one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the world! You’ll find loads of vegan and vegetarian options and most restaurants are vegan-friendly. One report estimates there are over 1,000 restaurants in NYC with vegan options — that’s huge!

One caveat, certain parts of the city are friendlier than others, getting from one end of the city to another can take some serious work. So be sure to plot out restaurants that you really want to visit and activities ahead of time so you don’t spend all of your time traveling.

It was built on a historic, elevated rail line and includes beautiful gardens, art, street performances, and food. It’s a lovely spot to meet friends. One important note, bikes and dogs are not allowed.
