Asking interviewers questions about their own life outside work can also be off-putting, so try not to bring those things into conversation with them either.

How to talk up your travel experiences in a job interview.

There was a time when international experiences could be a game changer in a job application; there was a huge advantage in having worked, studied, volunteered or traveled abroad. And many of the organizations behind opportunities like volunteering or working abroad still tout this as one of the biggest advantages to their programs.

“Differentiate yourself, make your resume stand out.” But unfortunately, this just isn’t the case anymore . The job market is too competitive. Too many applicants have international experience for that alone to be a point of differentiation.

And the thing is the vast majority of employers don’t actually care about your international experience. And why would they? How does it help the company that you spent six months volunteering in Southeast Asia?

This post will help you answer straight forward questions like: “Tell me about your last travel experience” and “Talk about your travel experiences.”

However, it will also help you bring your travel experience into more general questions like “tell me about a time you were a leader” or “what are your greatest strengths.”

Employers were never interested in the experience itself. Employers were interested in the skills the experience represents.

So if you want to use your international experience to land a job, you need to look at the experience from the lens of the employer. That means the real question you ask yourself is this:

“How do I use my travel experiences to demonstrate that I have the skills the employer is looking for?”

And that is what I am here to help you with. When I was in business school I was a member (and eventually a president) of a club that helped university students prepare for jobs in competitive industries.

I’d landed a business job myself using fairly unconventional experiences (i.e. camp counselling and wilderness guiding ) so helping others speak about their own experiences became a bit of a passion for me.

Employers are looking for skills in their employees – and international experiences can teach you those exact skills.

Maybe you went solo backpacking for the first time . At the start you fumbled around in train stations and didn’t leave the hostel on your own, but by the end of the trip you’re ordering food in another language, feeling comfortable on public transit and making friends with locals and travelers alike.

Or maybe you’ve just returned from studying abroad or volunteering internationally . You’ve learned about another culture and a thing or two about yourself. With traveling comes challenges and with challenges comes the opportunity to develop skills. And some of those skills are exactly what the employer wants.

Can make decisions under pressure
Able to work autonomously and independently
Can manage people in stressful situations
Good at problem solving under pressure
Brings passion and enthusiasm to the work
Can communicate professionally and to a variety of audiences
Effective team player, one that supports fellow team members and the leader

Decision making under pressure . Even tried navigating though a busy train station when you didn’t know the language? Even gotten yourself in a tricky situation and had to act quickly to get yourself out of it?

Independent worker. Have you backpacked solo? Have you lived alone abroad? Just about everything you did was independent. You know how to manage your time and efforts and this is what an employer wants to see in their employees.

Just about every skill an employer could want can be developed and demonstrated with an international experience.

How to speak about your international experiences in a way that will resonate with your employer.

As I said, your employer likely cares less about the experience itself and more about the skills you have that make you the best person for the job.

This isn’t just true for international experiences. Say you’re applying for a job as a marketing manager at a start up and previously you worked as a social media manager at a large company, the interviewer doesn’t actually care what your previous job was.

They are interested in the skills you must have demonstrated in that job (i.e. managing deadlines, interacting with people, thinking creatively, pitching ideas, skills like that). Before we get into all that however, let’s start at the beginning.

Think about the types of questions you might be asked in an interview.

In my experience, all the questions you get asked in an interview can loosely be grouped into four buckets. Job/Company Specific : “Why do you think you are a good fit for this role?” “Why do you want to work at this company?” “What do you like most about this company?”

This is a great place to differentiate.

I’ve written a little blurb at the bottom of the post about job/company specific questions.

Scenario : This is where the interviewer gives you a hypothetical situation and asks how you would handle it. This is very job specific, so I’m not going to get into these types of questions here.

Experience-based : “Tell me about yourself” “I can see on your resume that you did X. Tell me more about this experience.” “Tell me about a time you got in a conflict with someone.”

Skill-based : “What are your greatest weaknesses?” “What are your strengths as a leaders?” “Tell be about a time you demonstrated X skill.”

Here is where a lot of people make mistakes. They only talk about their skills when they get skill-based questions. When asked about an experience, they talk about the experience itself, not about the skills they developed or gained from the experience.

Every time you are asked about an experience and you don’t talk about your skills, you are missing an opportunity to show your interviewer just how great you are.

Write down the skills the job position requires , not the skills you have..

Usually you’ll find a handful of them in the job application itself. Write those down. Also, get creative. Imagine yourself in the job and identify a few skills that would be helpful or necessary to possess.

Write those down too. This will show the employer that you understand the job position and demonstrate how you’ve prepared for the interview.

Check that the skills are specific.

Simply saying “teamwork” or “leadership” isn’t effective because they are too vague, overused and come off like buzzwords.

You want to get specific.

Instead say you’re an “effective team player, someone who can work collaboratively with other team members and also support the leader.” You’re not just good at “leadership,” instead you “excel at leading people through challenging or ambiguous problems”.

Brainstorm experiences that relate to those skills.

Here is an example. When I was interviewing for my current job, I felt the position would require someone that was a “fast learner and adaptable” and could “communicate professionally, even under pressure.”

I immediately thought of my summer living in Nunavut, working at a remote arctic base camp north of the Arctic Circle (technically not international for me, but incredibly different than other cultures/experiences I’d had before).

I was expected to understand how to troubleshoot a wonky propane tank and navigate around icebergs in a kayak. I had to communicate with other guides and tourists who weren’t all native-English speakers, and I had to communicate professionally and calmly even when I was stressed or frustrated.

Although working at an arctic base camp is not at all related to business, both jobs require fast learning and adaptability, and professional communication.

By speaking about skills, you can connect an unrelated experience to the job you’re applying to, demonstrating to the interviewer exactly how that experience makes you a good fit for the job.

Tie each of the skills you’ve written down to a different experience. This is where you have to go beyond your international experience(s) and consider every other experience you’ve ever had.

Your potential employer wants to see you’ve had a breadth of experience, so you can’t tie everything to your year-long backpacking trip or semester volunteering.

When I am doing interview prep with students, I see this mistake a lot. Candidates over-rely on one experience. Say there are six skills you want to demonstrate: you could tie one to an experience at school, two to a previous job you had, and three to your international experiences.

Pro tip: Do not underestimate seemingly unimpressive experiences. One of my friends had previously worked as a server at a high end golf club.

The job she was applying to required her to work under pressure, and want to know what has a lot of pressure?

Waiting tables and pleasing patrons at a high end golf club!

Often the employers don’t actually care about what your experiences are, they care about the skills you’ve learned from them and how you can apply them to the job you’re applying for. That’s why knowing how to speak about experiences in a way that will resonate with an employer is so powerful.

Next, embody the Job-Skill-Experience-Skill-Job Sandwich.

When you talk about your experiences, always keep it in the context of the job. I like to think of it like a sandwich. I open and close my answer with something about the job I’m applying to and the skill that job requires, and I only talk about the experience at the very middle of my answer. Here is an example.

Example 1: Why do you think you’re qualified for the position of marketing manager?

“Effective communication will be an important skill for the marketing manager to have” [I dentify the skill needed for the job ] “and this is something that I practiced and developed during my time in Australia. I was living somewhere that spoke English, but there were still subtle differences in word choice and body language that could convey different meanings. I remember….(insert quick example here).”

[Begin to talk about experience and how it relates to the skill. You can also throw in a sentence that gives a more specific example. ] “I learned that an effective communicator is intentional in word choice and body language, and adapts according to the culture and background of the other person.”

I believe my approach to effective communication will make me an effective marketing manager for your company.” [ And now bring the skill back to the job and why you’d be great!]

Example 2: Tell me about your time volunteering abroad. How do you think this has prepared you for a role in our business development team?

“I remember these two days where we all had to work outside together; there had been some turnover on the team and it was absolutely pouring rain – everyone was keeping to themselves and absolutely miserable.

I had this idea that if I could just get people laughing or loosening up, we might be able to come together and get the work done faster. I went around teaching everyone this silly icebreaker game I remembered from camp and soon enough we were all playing it together.

“I believe this example speaks to how I approach working in teams: with collaboration and optimism. I’m sure the business development team will encounter challenges too, but I think volunteering abroad has given me an approach to teams that will make me an effective member of the business development team.” [ Bring it all together again. ]

See how the sandwich works?

Now, I’m not saying these are the perfect answers. But I hope these examples demonstrate the structure of an interview answer that is skills based, rather than a description of an experience.

You should spend a decent about of time brainstorming your sandwich for each skill you’ve listed. This will ensure the skill ties the job and the experience together and give you confidence going into the interview.

Pro tip: You can also apply this method to cover letters. I personally love a cover letter that clearly outlines the skills needed for the position and how the candidate has those skills. You’re essentially making the resume reviewer’s job easier!

Get really good talking about the sandwich.

Until I was in my third year of university (my first year of business school), I never really practiced my answers to interview questions. In fact, I didn’t do any preparation at all.

Now I understand just how important preparation is. You, of course, don’t want to memorize answers to questions you may or may not get asked. That will make you seem rehearsed and robotic.

Instead, put down the paper and just speak freely about the sandwich. The first time, there will probably be moments when you fumble over your words or ramble on for a while.

So practice tying it all together. Don’t script it, because that comes off as disingenuous. But practice speaking it out loud, in front of the mirror, to your friends, to your parents, whoever.

Honestly, I know this is terrible and everyone dreads it, but PRACTICE ANSWERING INTERVIEW QUESTIONS IN FRONT OF SOMEONE . They will tell you if you use too many hand gestures or you ramble too much.

Nail the interview, get job, be happy!

Now all that’s left to do is the interview itself!

Company specific questions.

I said I’d leave off with a few strategies to help you distinguish yourself from other applicants with the company-specific questions. So here you go.

Company-specific questions offer an opportunity to do some research. When someone asks you what you like about the company, you want to have a really creative answer that demonstrates you’ve done some research on the company.

Here are two examples for “What about company X makes you want to work here?” (Note: company names are fictitious.)

Example 1: Look for the company in the news.

You’re interviewing at Green Clothing Co, a company that makes ethically and sustainable sourced clothing. You read a news article that a major department store asked to carry their clothing, but Green Clothing Co turned the opportunity down. Use that in your answer.

“Green Clothing Co has always been a company I respected for its commitment to ethical and sustainable sourcing, as this is something I personally value in the brands I support.

I remember reading that Green Clothing turned down a profitable opportunity with a major department store in order stay true to its values. I want the company I work for the reflect my values and I believe Green Company Co does this.”

Example 2: Speak to someone already working at the company.

You’re interviewing at a tech start up. You contacted Kate from the company on LinkedIn to ask her some questions about her experience working with the company. The employee said it’s a fast-paced environment for high achievers and that any employee learns a lot there.

“Beyond my interest in tech and start-ups, I am interested in working for a company that enables me to thrive in a fast-paced environment, a place where I am constantly improving my skills and personal growth isn’t stagnant.

I spoke with Kate and this is the exact work environment she described. She explained how employees were constantly being challenged and personal growth is encouraged. After hearing that, I knew this company was a place that I could excel at. ‘

Other ideas for speaking about the company.

These are not the only two ways you can demonstrate your commitment and interest in the company. Get creative. Get personal. Maybe it was your first experience with their product.

Maybe a friend recommend the company or you saw them sponsoring a fundraiser and wanted to learn more about them. The main objective is to give the employer an answer they aren’t accustomed to hearing and makes you stand out.

International experience & job interviews – what are your thoughts?

Anyways, you’ve reached the bottom of the post. So who am I to be talking about this?

If you’ve come across this article without knowing anything about me, you might be thinking “ Mikaela, you’re a travel blogger – who are you to be giving us interview advice?”

Well, that is where you’d be incorrect. Despite having this little travel blog, I am not a travel blogger in the slightest. At least as of today, this blog is 100% a hobby and I make literally no money off of it (it actually bleeds money but that’s another story).

Prior to my third year of university, the only job I’d ever had was leading canoe trips at summer camp and guiding tourists in the Canadian Arctic. Super cool and my true passion in life, however not really applicable to my engineering or business degrees.

In my third year, however, I applied for summer internships with very traditional business companies (specifically in management consulting) because they seemed pretty interesting and everyone else was doing it.

Despite a lot of my classmates having much more relevant job experiences (like working at boutique consulting firms, law firms and banks), I got a lot of interviews and I eventually got hired at one of them.

After that, I was a member (and then president) of a club that helped students do interview prep. In my experience, I’ve found that it’s not the applicants with the most impressive resumes that get hired – it’s the people who can speak about their experiences in a way that resonates with their interviewer. So yeah, that’s me!

Why this is a strong answer:

The answer above is a perfect example of demonstrating that you’re energetic, vital, and can cope with stress. Exercising, fitness, and sports, in general, are great to discuss as a hobby. Furthermore, you link your hobby to the job description and show that you’re looking forward to meeting other employees in a more casual setting.

Example Answer 2: ‘What Are Your Hobbies?’

‘I always enjoyed reading which is also my main hobby. I’m an avid reader and I try to read at least one non-fiction book every quarter. What I like about reading is that it can transport me to another location while I’m still in my house. I’ve been attending book club meetings as well. I enjoy discussing what I’ve read with others and it’s interesting how many points of view and interpretations you get to discuss.’

The answer above shows that you have a rich imagination and that you’re active on a creative level outside of work. You discuss what you like doing and also that you value other people’s opinions en interpretations. This indicates that you’re a team player and that you’re willing to listen to other points of view.

Example answer 3: ‘What Are Your Hobbies?’

‘One of my extra-curricular activities is helping others out in my free time through volunteer work and community activities. I coach a junior basketball team in my neighborhood. I also volunteer a couple of hours a week at my local library where I help sorting the returned books.’

When discussing your hobbies and you happen to be active in volunteering work and/or community activities, mention this. This shows that you have high character and that you care about other people, besides yourself.

Example Answer 4: ‘What Are Your Hobbies?’

‘ I am actively working on gaining more professional knowledge in my field of work to make sure that I stay up-to-date. For instance, to stay a member of the professional association you need to have at least 10 hours of verifiable self-study.

By attending seminars, reading professional journals, and taking online classes I make sure that I make more hours than needed. This is my way of keeping up my knowledge and area of expertise.’

Some professions require self-study and self-development hours. By discussing and demonstrating that you’re actively working on your skills, knowledge, and abilities you show the interviewer that you take your work seriously and that you’re improving yourself on an ongoing basis.

When you're preparing to interview for a new job, remember that not all the questions asked during an interview will directly relate to the position you're interviewing for. If interviewers are interested in you as a candidate for the job, they will go further afield with their questions.

Questions about your hobbies, interests, and passions are fairly common during the job interview process. Here's how to prepare a response that shows you're well-rounded.

If interviewers are interested in you for the job, they are going to want to know if you are a well-rounded person who will fit in with the company culture . Interviewers will want to know if you are passionate about certain things. They may ask you about your hobbies, interests, and activities outside of work if they are truly interested in you as a candidate.

Some employers also ask about your hobbies to get a sense of your ability to balance your work and personal life.

They want to know that you have a life outside of work, but that you won’t let it interfere with your ability to get tasks done.

How to Answer “What Are Your Hobbies?”

When answering these kinds of interview questions , provide honest answers, but be careful not to go into so much detail about your hobbies that they will seem to threaten your commitment to the job. If, for example, your hobby is following your daughter from city to city because she performs as a gymnast, that might be worrisome to many interviewers.

Before your interview, do some research on the company and see if any of your hobbies or interests dovetail with the company culture. Those are interests you should emphasize if your interviewer asks this question. Avoid answers that make you seem uninteresting or, even worse, inappropriate. Keep your answers brief.

Here are some sample answers that might help you when you are faced with a question about your hobbies and interests. You can use these to formulate your response.

Example Answer #1

One of my hobbies is working out and I noticed, in your job advertisement, that you have a gym for your employees. That is attractive to me not only because I can work out there but also because I’ll be able to meet other employees in the gym and get to know them on a more casual basis.

Why It Works: Exercise and fitness-related hobbies can demonstrate health, energy, vitality, and the ability to manage stress. If an older applicant works out as a hobby, this could alleviate an interviewer's concern about the applicant's age. The interviewer would also be pleased to hear that you are interested in getting to know your fellow employees, particularly if the organization focuses on team-building.

But remember to be honest first and foremost. You don't want to brag about being a “golf pro" and then get to the driving range with your new employer, only to have no idea what to do.

Example Answer #2

I enjoy volunteer work and community activities. I coach my son’s little league baseball team. I also volunteer a couple of hours per week at a social services organization that hands out clothes and furnishings to the homeless.

Why It Works: Volunteer work shows high character and concern for people other than yourself. Working for community-based organizations is also a great way to source potential clients while pursuing a common interest.

One of my extracurricular activities is keeping up with my professional development and continuing education responsibilities. As you know, we must complete six hours of continuing education each year. I keep up with my area of expertise by reading professional journals, attending seminars, and taking the occasional class, either online or in a traditional classroom. I also often serve as one of the officers for our professional association.

Why It Works: In some professions, it’s mandatory to keep up with new developments by taking continuing education classes and keeping up through meetings and conferences, reading journals, and taking other classes of interest. Indicating that you do these things will be reassuring to your interviewer.

Example Answer #4

I have a variety of hobbies. I hike with my dog every chance I get. I spend time with my spouse and children. I try to work on the New York Times crossword puzzle every weekend. I like to cook.

Why It Works: If you’re honest, these things are considered positives. Physical fitness and attention to pets and family are always positive activities. Working on crossword puzzles indicates an attention to detail. Cooking suggests a certain creativity.

Take it in stride. Some people get surprised by questions about things unrelated to the job. Don’t let this question throw you off your game. If you need to, take a pause and think, and then answer as you would any other interview question.

Try to relate the hobby to the job or company. If possible, connect your hobby to the company or job. This will show your deep interest in the industry. For example, if you are applying for a job in gaming, you might mention your passion for certain video games.

You might also focus on answers that demonstrate a positive quality that might indirectly help you achieve success at work. For example, if your job requires that you do a lot of writing and editing, you might mention your passion for reading novels or writing your own stories.

Explain how you fit your hobby into your life. Don’t just name an activity as your hobby and leave it at that. Go on to (briefly) explain how you incorporate your hobby into your life. If your hobby is gardening, you might say that you own a plot in a community garden in your neighborhood and that you spend a few hours there every weekend. Demonstrate to your employer that you follow through with your interest.

You also want to avoid seeming as if you spend all your time on your hobbies. You want to show that you have interests, but that you also have the time to do the job well.

Explain why you love it. Along with saying how you fit your hobby into your life, add a brief explanation of why you love the hobby. Perhaps you like gardening because you find being outside calming. Maybe you play team sports because you love working with other people. By explaining why you like an activity, you'll give your employer a better sense of who you are and what makes you tick.

Keep it brief. Even though you want to include all of this information, you still want to keep your answer brief. Don't go on a 10-minute monologue about your favorite plant or your past five camping trips. This question is not meant to be a big part of the interview.

Be honest. Make sure the hobby you mention is one that you actually pursue. If you get the job, the employer will likely remember that you said you loved soccer, for example, and might invite you to join a team. Don’t get caught in a lie. Also, be prepared for follow-up questions: If you say you love movies, for instance, interviewers may ask you what your favorite movie is, or the last movie you saw in theaters.

Don’t talk about controversial hobbies. If your hobby is protesting for a political party or religious zealotry, then keep that to yourself. You don’t know the interviewer’s views, and you don’t want to cause any offense or bring up a difficult subject.

Be careful about personal conversations. Don’t bring up personal issues except as they relate to your hobbies. You don’t want to talk about difficult health issues that concern you or your family during your interview. Don’t ask the interviewer personal questions.

Don’t talk too much about your hobbies. Even though extracurricular activities are important if the interviewer asks you about them, they aren’t the most important part of the interview. Be brief in your answers.

9 Benefits of Travelling as a Hobby [+ Tips List]

There are many benefits of travelling as a hobby from seeing amazing new places and understanding different cultures to a personal feeling of accomplishment and even learning a new language.

Let’s start off with the basics though:

Is travelling a hobby?

100% it is.

The dictionary definition of hobby is ‘an activity someone does for pleasure when they are not working’.

So if you travel for pleasure whilst you are away from one, you can absolutely consider your travel as a hobby.

Bonus points for those who geek out on research, follow fellow travellers on social media and read travel books and stories in their spare time!

In this article, I’m going to cover some of the benefits of travelling as a hobby as well as linking to my favourite posts that contain great tips for helping you make the most out of your trips.

1. Understanding Different Cultures

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” Mark Twain

One of my favourite reasons for having travel as a hobby is being able to immerse myself in different countries and cultures rather than seeing them on screen or reading about them in a book.

I’m not trying to claim for one second that spending a week in another country teaches you everything about the place (I’ve lived in Australia for two years now and have barely even scratched the surface) but I certainly feel it gives me more understanding and appreciation of a culture than never having visited.

When I can talk to people, live alongside them, shop in the places they do and feel out of my comfort zone in their world, it begins to help me realise some of what is important.

I often quickly realise how little difference there is when all is said and done, we all want a happy, healthy family, somewhere safe to live and a decent meal at the end of the day.

2. Seeing Amazing Places

“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” Aldous Huxley

Whilst I don’t completely agree with the quote above ( see my commentary piece on Medium here ) I do agree that the only way to truly comprehend the amazing places on Earth is to see them with your own eyes.

It’s easy to be an armchair traveller or documentary discoverer, forming an ‘expert’ opinion based on books and photography, but the only way to really understand is to be there.

Flick through all the photos of Angkor Wat you want, but it’s not until you go that you appreciate its size, see the detail of the bas-reliefs, smell the incense blowing through ancient corridors or feel the humidity that the gets held inside the huge sandstone buildings.

So, maybe not everyone is wrong about other countries, but you simply won’t know until you visit for yourself,

3. Meeting New People

My Instagram account is absolutely filled with people who I’ve briefly crossed paths with whilst travelling and my phone book has the numbers of a few that have become more than just people we’ve passed on the way.

Whilst most don’t become lifelong friends, the colourful characters we meet on the road become part of the stories we tell for a lifetime.

To the Thai teenager who quizzed my wife and I for nearly two hours as we all waited for a delayed train, asking us questions to help improve her English, including such killers as ‘why exactly do you love your wife?’ and ‘what is your favourite thing about her?’. Just a tad awkward.

To Clay, who we followed around the Thakhek Loop in Laos, sharing travel stories over an evening fire.

To Sara and Miguel, with whom we spent three hours doing a cooking course in Thailand and laughing so hard that it felt like we’d known each other for years.

Ok, so a straight up confession here, I speak one language, and that’s English…

…and there are some who would argue I haven’t exactly mastered that yet.

But, if you are someone who’s learning a new language, travelling as a hobby can really help you out by immersing yourself in exactly that language you’re hoping to learn.

A friend of mine has moved to Germany and it’s amazing how quickly he’s picked up the language now he’s surrounded by it. He does everything to accelerate his learning, from watching The Simpsons in German through to changing the instructions and menus on video games into the language.

I made a similar move abroad, but mine was to Australia , and whilst I’ve got really good at ‘how ya going’ and ‘too easy’ it’s not exactly a second language to add to the CV .

5. Self Reflection

There is a lot of time for self reflection when travelling.

Being away from a normal routine and with ample time waiting at stations and confined to transport, the mind naturally spends time wandering.

Honestly though, rarely have my reflections been life-changing, more life-affirming. I feel like I understand myself better, think more clearly and have a desire to slow down. I reflect on how grateful I am for what I have, how much I often take my family and friends for granted and what I wonderful country I grew up in.

I know for some, they asay travelling has changed their life forever.

It never has for me.

For me, the self-reflection of travel is more a renewal, a chance to think long and hard about things I don’t get the time to at home and come back fresh and ready to go again.

It’s why I prefer taking sabbaticals to quitting work completely, the time away invigorates me to carry on improving.

6. Accomplishment

I get a real sense of accomplishment from travel, in fact it’s probably the biggest thing that makes travelling a hobby for me.

Filling in the map, adding another country to the list , it really feeds my collecting and completion mentality.

That’s not to say I’m going JUST to fill in the map, but it is part of the reasons I choose to visit new places rather than go back to the same ones again and again. I want to try and see a bit of all of them.

It’s also the reason I tick off UNESCO World Heritage Sites as I travel . Not only do I know they are always incredible places to visit (in fact it’s one of my biggest tips for other travellers ) but I also love keeping a total of how many I’ve made it to.

7. Becoming Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

We only learn when we are stretched, when we are at the edges of what we feel comfortable doing.

And one of the biggest things I’ve learned from my travelling hobby is how to feel comfortable being uncomfortable and how to worry less about things that are out of my control.

The feeling of being in a new country where you don’t speak the language, don’t know anyone, don’t have anywhere to stay or any idea where or when you’re going to eat.

That’s uncomfortable.

But it’s also strangely liberating.

Weirdly, when life is cut back to the real basic human needs, all the more complex worries of emails piling up, deadlines that need meeting and workplace conflict seem so small and unimportant.

As someone who’s suffered with anxiety all my life, the anxieties of surviving in a new country seem far less than the more trivial problems I experience every day at work.

My body and brain adapt, I keep occupied and quickly learn how to survive outside my comfort zone.

8. Keeping a Record

“I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train.” Oscar Wilde

We’ve already spoken about filling in a map, but there are other ways of keeping a record if you travel as a hobby.

Some keep a beautiful journal or travel diary, others take photographs and put together big glossy books when they get home.

I like to buy a Lonely Planet guide and bring home a wooden carving from each place we go to. We have a wooden bear from Croatia, a wooden shark from Seychelles and even a wooden ribbiting frog from South Africa

If you want to go to even more extreme measures, you can even start a travel blog like I did.

It’s a lot of work, but I love it and it forms a permanent record of our travels around the world and brings in some extra income.

9. Re-Appreciating Your Home Country

“The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.” G.K. Chesterton

The quote above says it far more articulately than I ever could.

One of the things I get most from travel is that, on my return, I have a new-found appreciation for my home country.

The longer I’m away, the more I feel like a tourist in my own land when I return, the more I notice the buildings and landscape I’d gone past hundreds or times before without noticing and the more I appreciate everything from local pubs to my friendly corner-shop owner.

If a hobby is an activity done for enjoyment, than travelling as a hobby gives a dual benefit – the enjoyment of travel itself and then the enjoyment in a new-found love of your home country.

Q&A on Trump’s Criminal Conviction

Donald Trump became the first U.S. president, current or former, to be convicted of a criminal offense when a 12-person jury in New York on May 30 found him guilty on 34 felony counts of business fraud as part of an illegal scheme to influence the 2016 election by making payments to suppress a sordid tale of sex with a porn star.

The unprecedented conviction raises questions about what’s next for the 77-year-old man who is in line to become the Republican Party’s nominee for president in 2024.

In remarks at Trump Tower a day after his conviction, Trump called the United States “ a corrupt country ” and declared that he would be “ appealing this scam .”

(Trump also repeated many of the false, misleading and unsupported claims he has made about the judge, the judge’s rulings, the district attorney and other issues related to the trial. For more about Trump’s talking points, see our May 30 article, “ Trump’s Repeated Claims on His New York Hush Money Trial .” He also repeated false and unsubstantiated claims on other issues, such as taxes and migrants .)

Here, we answer some of the questions raised by the former president’s conviction:

What are the next steps in the case? What punishment could Trump face? Will he go to prison? Can Trump vote in the 2024 election? Can a felon run for president, hold office? Can Trump pardon himself on this conviction, if he wins?

What are the next steps in the case?

Sentencing and an appeal are up next in this case.

Sentencing by Justice Juan Merchan is scheduled for July 11. Before that date, a probation officer or someone in that department will interview Trump, and potentially others involved in the case or connected to Trump, and prepare a pre-sentence report for the judge. The report includes the personal history and criminal record of the defendant, and it recommends what sentence the defendant should receive, according to the New York State Unified Court System.

“The pre-sentence interview is a chance for the defendant to try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” the state court system explains.

Trump’s lawyers have to wait until after the sentencing to appeal the conviction. First, Trump’s lawyers will file motions before the judge “in a couple weeks” saying why they found the trial to be “unfair,” Trump’s defense attorney Todd Blanche told CNN hours after the guilty verdict.

Cheryl Bader , a clinical associate professor of law at Fordham University School of Law, said these motions are typical when a defendant is convicted. The defense attorneys will ask the judge to overturn the jury’s conviction. “It’s rarely, rarely granted, and I don’t think there’s a chance that will happen in this case,” she told us in a phone interview.

Blanche told CNN that if the motions aren’t successful, “then as soon as we can appeal, we will. And the process in New York is there’s a sentencing, and then — and then we appeal from there.”

Bader, a former assistant U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, walked us through the appeals process. “The case is considered completed at sentencing,” she said. “At that point, his lawyers file a notice of appeal … letting the court know that he intends to appeal.”

At that point, they will also request a “stay” on the sentence, meaning a pause on imposing the sentence while the case is being appealed.

This appeal goes to the Appellate Division, First Judicial Department in Manhattan. The appeals court doesn’t retry the case. “They’re not going to substitute their judgment on the facts for the jury’s judgment,” Bader explained. Instead, “they’re looking for where there was error that would have led to an improper prosecution or an unfair trial.”

The appeals process would take several months to a year, she said. After the notice of appeal is given, the record of the case is gathered, including trial transcripts, the indictment, pretrial motions, evidentiary rulings, jury selection and instructions, and more. Trump could also appeal the sentencing. The lawyers need to write their arguments for all of the issues they’re objecting to, and that takes time, Bader said.

And then the appeals court needs to consider the case and write a decision on it.

If Trump ultimately isn’t successful at the appellate level, he can appeal to the highest court in New York state, which is called the Court of Appeals . But the court decides whether or not it takes the case.

After such an appeal to the highest state court, the case would be over — unless Trump tries to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. But there has to be a U.S. constitutional issue for that. “I don’t see one,” Bader said, but perhaps Trump’s lawyers would try to make an argument.

What punishment could Trump face? Will he go to prison?

Whether Trump is sentenced to any time in prison is up to the judge.

Each of the 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree , a class E felony, carries a maximum sentence of up to four years in prison . The judge could decide to impose the sentences consecutively or simultaneously. However, under New York law, 20 years is the maximum prison time that Trump could get — not 187 years, as Trump falsely claimed in his May 31 remarks.

Norman Eisen , a CNN legal analyst and a senior fellow in governance studies for the Brookings Institution, said that “in the most serious” cases of business records falsification in New York that he studied, “a sentence of imprisonment was routinely imposed.” Trump’s case “is the most serious one in NY history,” he wrote on X, predicting that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin “Bragg will likely ask for incarceration & Merchan will consider it.”

While possible, Bader, with Fordham’s School of Law, told us she doesn’t think incarceration will happen.

For a first-time convicted felon, with a low-level, nonviolent felony and a person of advanced age, “under any circumstance like that, there’d be a relatively low chance of incarceration,” she said.

“On the other hand, I could see the prosecutor arguing that here’s a man who has shown disrespect for the court system and the rule of law and has violated the court’s orders on numerous occasions. He is not remorseful. And that in order to promote general deterrence, he needs to be punished,” she said in describing a possible argument from the prosecutor.

Bader said any incarceration sentence “would be only a token amount of time to make the point that Trump is not above the law.” Other sentencing possibilities include probation or a “conditional discharge” with conditions other than incarceration or probation.

The “simplest” option might be for the judge to fine Trump, she said.

Can Trump vote in the 2024 election?

Yes, Trump can vote as long as he is not in jail on Election Day, which this year is on Nov. 5.

Trump owns homes in New York and Florida, but in 2019 he changed his primary residence to Florida. However, Florida law does not apply in Trump’s case because he was convicted in New York. Instead, New York law applies.

“If you were convicted outside Florida, your voting rights are governed by the state where you were convicted,” as the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida explains on its website.

In 2021, New York state enacted a law that “restores the right to vote for a person convicted of a felony upon release from incarceration, regardless of if they are on parole or have a term of post-release supervision,” the New York State Board of Elections says . “If a convicted felon is not incarcerated, they are eligible to register to vote.”

Can a felon run for president, hold office?

Yes. According to Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the U.S. Constitution, there are three qualifications to serve as president: He or she must be at least 35 years old upon taking office, a U.S. resident for at least 14 years and a “natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States.”

“These qualifications are understood to be exclusive,” Josh Chafetz , a Georgetown University law professor, told us last year when we were writing about Trump’s federal indictment related to allegations of mishandling sensitive classified documents after he left office. “Anyone can be president so long as they meet the constitutional qualifications and do not trigger any constitutional disqualifications.”

“Someone can run for president while under indictment or even having been convicted and serving prison time,” said Chafetz, who pointed to the example of Eugene V. Debs, the late labor leader, who, in 1920, ran for president from prison on the Socialist Party ticket and got almost 1 million votes.

There is an exception to that rule. The Constitution says in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment that no U.S. officeholder, including the president, can serve if they are convicted of “engag[ing] in insurrection or rebellion” against the U.S. — something Trump has not been charged with either in this case or the three others he faces.

Six Colorado voters successfully sued in state court to prevent Trump from appearing on that state’s ballot, citing the constitutional amendment barring insurrectionists from holding federal office. But the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the state ruling, “[b]ecause the Constitution makes Congress, rather than the States, responsible for enforcing Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates.”

Can Trump pardon himself on this conviction, if he wins?

The short answer is no.

Trump was convicted in New York for offenses in violation of state law. Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution states that a president has the “[p]ower to grant reprieves and pardons for offences against the United States.” According to Constitution Annotated , a government-sanctioned record of the interpretations of the Constitution, that means the power extends to “federal crimes but not state or civil wrongs.”

In a case decided in 1925, Ex parte Grossman , the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed that interpretation, writing that the Constitution’s language specifying presidential pardon power for offenses “against the United States” was “presumably to make clear that the pardon of the President was to operate upon offenses against the United States as distinguished from offenses against the States.”

The New York governor has the power to pardon Trump for his conviction of crimes under state law. That’s currently Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat. After the verdict, Republican Rep. Nick LaLota called on Hochul “to immediately announce her intention to pardon President Trump and pre-emptively commute any sentence. To not do so is to allow America to become a banana republic.” Hochul released a statement on May 30 saying, “Today’s verdict reaffirms that no one is above the law.”
