A419 traffic live: Fatal crash closes road near M4 junction with huge diversions in place

Incident on major route linking the M4 at Swindon, Wiltshire, with the M5 in Gloucestershire

  • Updated 16:43, 3 JAN 2024

Swindon Police attend crash in Swindon

A major road remains closed after a fatal collision in which a teenager died. The incident happened late last night (Tuesday) on the A419 in Wiltshire and police are in attendance.

The crash scene is between the junction for the A4259 and junction 15 for the M4 near Swindon. The junction 15 slip road is closed in both directions.

National Highways says the road is closed for Wiltshire police to carry out a collision investigation. The A419 is a major strategic route linking the M4 at Swindon with the A417 into Gloucestershire and the M5 .

Long diversions are in place for northbound and southbound traffic. More details and updates in the blog below.

Wiltshire Police statement in full after teenage boy dies in crash

Wiltshire Police said in a statement earlier

We can confirm that a person has died following a collision on the A419 at the junction of the M4 in Swindon. The incident took place last night (02/01), shortly before 11pm, when a Vauxhall Astra collided with the roundabout at the junction. Sadly, one of the occupants of the car, believed to be a teenage male, died at the scene as a result of the injuries he sustained. Formal identification has not yet taken place. Three other occupants of the car sustained minor injuries. Following initial enquiries, a male in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The two other individuals, both female and in their 20s, were arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent. All three remain in custody at this time. We can also confirm that the incident occurred following a police pursuit. As is protocol, we have referred ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) who will be independently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. As such, we are unable to comment further on this element at this time. The A419 southbound from the Commonhead roundabout to the M4 is closed as is the M4 eastbound exit slip road for J15. These will likely be closed for much of the day so we would ask all motorists to use alternative routes where possible. Anyone who witnessed the collision or might have dash cam footage of the incident or the vehicle beforehand, is asked to email us on [email protected].

National Highways update after fatal collision on A418

The closure of a busy junction off the M4 in Wiltshire following a serious collision will continue late into the night, drivers are being advised. The A419 is closed in both directions between the A4259 Commonhead Roundabout at Swindon and junction 15 of the M4. The M4 eastbound exit and entry slip roads are also shut. Police investigations have been ongoing throughout the day. Once complete, recovery of the vehicles will take place and there has also been substantial damage to the safety barrier. The road will be closed throughout the evening peak traffic and is unlikely to open before the early hours of the morning. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for journeys. Diversion routes via the A3102 and A4259 are in place.

A419 update from National Highways

It has just sent out the latest update to the press:

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for journeys this morning following a serious collision which has closed the A419 in Wiltshire in both directions and is impacting on the M4. The A419 is closed between the A4259 Commonhead Roundabout at Swindon and junction 15 of the M4 following the collision overnight. The M4 eastbound exit and entry slip roads are also shut. Closures are expected to remain throughout the morning as police investigations continue.

A419 traffic update from Wiltshire Police

This from police on X

Drivers please be aware that road closures remain in place around J15 for the M4 following yesterday evening's serious RTC. The A419 southbound from the Commonhead rndbt to the M4 is closed, and the M4 eastbound exit slip road for J15 is also closed. These closures are likely to remain in place through the morning rush hour. Drivers are currently unable to travel around the J15 roundabout, so those leaving the M4 at J15 westbound are only able to travel onto the A346 southbound or rejoin the motorway westbound. The motorway itself remains fully open. We appreciate the travel difficulties and delays these closures will cause so please allow extra time for your journeys.
