10 Amazing Travel Trailers with Bunkhouses (With Pricing)

Travel Trailer with Bunkhouse

Most average size travel trailers can comfortably sleep between four and six people at a time, depending on their size and layout.

As travel trailers with bunkhouses, often double the sleeping capacity of a standard camper , allowing anywhere from six to ten people to comfortably sleep inside the trailer.

So for those looking for a travel trailer with a larger sleeping capacity, we’ve scoured the RV market to find some of the best and most popular travel trailers with bunkhouses .

15 Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers (2020 & 2022 Trailers)

travel trailer

One of my favorite memories growing up as a young kid was hitting the road with my family on the weekends and camping in the beautiful green back forest of Oregon. That isn’t to say that it was all sunshine and bluebirds. There were some nights that were rather uncomfortable, and I longed for the comfort of my own bed. It would have been perfect if at the time we had a trailer with a nice set of bunk beds. Below in this post are the best travel trailers with bunk beds that I wish I had growing up. Many of the trailers selected are new for 2018.

15 Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

  • Dutchmen Coleman Conventional Lantern Series
  • Palomino Puma travel trailer
  • Keystone Hideout travel trailer
  • Dutchmen Aspen Trail travel trailer
  • Crossroads Zinger travel trailer
  • Jayco Jay Fight SLX
  • Keystone LAREDO
  • Micro Lite Bunkhouse
  • Coachmen Chaparral
  • The Voltage
  • Keystone RV Outback Ultra Lite
  • Freedom Ultralite Express
  • Shasta Oasis Trailer
  • Forest River Salem
  • Shadow Cruiser

How We Created Our List Of Bunkhouse Trailers

There are a decent amount of options for trailers with bunk beds, but our goal was to only select the highest quality trailers.

We put in hours of research to select the ones that based on reviews, manufacture rating, and features could be considered the best options.

I hope you like what we selected. Please send us a message with your feedback if you feel something should be added or removed from the list, and I will be sure to make the update.

1. Dutchmen Coleman Conventional Lantern Series

Dutchmen Colemen Conventional Lantern Series

Trailer Features

  • Front Rockguard Plate
  • Residential Grade Flooring
  • Outside Shower
  • 13,500 BTU Air Conditioner
  • 28” Door(s)
  • Power Awning with LED Patio Light
  • Exterior Speakers
  • Enclosed and Insulated Fresh Water Tank
  • Oven with 3 Burner Range
  • Sleeps 7-12
  • Dry weight 4,510 -8,421

Trailer Overview

Coleman has been around for awhile now. They have had since the year 1900 to work out the logistics of their operations, and to understand the best way to fulfill their obligations to their customers. They have done pretty well. Overall, they have a good reputation for producing what are considered quality products that suit the entry or luxury class to which that particular RV is ascribed. As for the Lantern series, Dutchmen has remained consistent in their approach. Perusing the internet forums, you will find a relatively satisfied customer base. There is a lighter version of this series called LT Lantern. Click here , if your tow vehicle requires something a bit lighter.

2. Palomino Puma Travel Trailer

2. Palomino Puma Travel Trailer

Defining Features

  • Double Entry Doors (Where Applicable)
  • Pass-Thru Storage (Where Applicable)
  • Power Awning
  • Rubber Roof with a 12 Year Manufacturer’s Warranty
  • Rain Gutters with Large Drop Spouts
  • One-Piece, 24’ Sheet, ⅝” Floor Decking with 25 Year Limited Manufacturer’s Warranty
  • 2-20 Pound Gas Bottles
  • 6 Gallon DSI Hot Water Heater
  • 80” Interior Height
  • Floor Ducted Heat
  • 35,000 BTU Furnace
  • Fiberglass Cap
  • Dry weight 6370-9109

Looking through the floor plans, you will find a large selection of bunkhouse layouts. If their claims are true, Palomino offers the largest selection of bunkhouses in the industry. They have also made the claim that they have a “multitude” of standard features, and I have found that to be true as well (As you can see from the snippet above).

As with almost every RV out there, the craftsmanship is more than questionable. Reports of screws falling out and glued areas needing re-gluing are fairly common. However, I’m not coming across reports of anything serious falling apart. I’m finding a lot of people happy with this line of campers.

3. Keystone Hideout Travel Trailer

Keystone Hideout

  • Diamond Plate
  • Black Tank Flush
  • Full Walk on Roof
  • 96” Exterior Width
  • Lighted Adjustable Power Awning
  • 6 Cubit Feet Refrigerator (Residential for 38BHDS, 38FDDS, 38FKDS, 38FQDS)
  • Built-In 30,000 BTU Furnace
  • 81” Interior Height
  • 4 ½’ Crowned Roof
  • Sleeps 6-10
  • Dry weight 5785-8015

The more popular the brand, the more prolific the complaints. Browsing through the complaint sites, you will find many unhappy customers. However, according to polls and forums, Keystone is a decent manufacturer. According to one poll, 90% of the Keystone customer base would purchase a Keystone again which is a stunningly good percentage.

4. Dutchmen Aspen Trail Travel Trailer

4. Dutchmen Aspen Trail travel trailer

  • Hardwood Cabinet Doors
  • 6 Cubic Feet Gas/Electric Refrigerator
  • 6 Gallon Gas/Electric Water Heater with DSI
  • 82” Interior Height, 6 Feet Ceiling in Slide Room
  • 13,500 BTU Ducted Air
  • High Output Furnace
  • Heated and Enclosed Underbelly
  • Seamless One Piece Roof / Walk-On Roof
  • Diamond Plate Rock Guard
  • Front and Rear Stabilizing Jacks
  • Sleeps 8-11
  • Dry weight 4,811 – 8609

This is a budget class of travel trailers, but it doesn’t act like it. When the compliments are much easier to find than the complains; you’ve probably got something good happening. At least, that’s the case in the RV world. floor plans are well-designed, I’m finding pretty consistent customer service, and good warranty response.

5. Crossroads Zinger Travel Trailer

5. Crossroads Zinger travel trailer

  • Black Tank Flush System
  • 54 Gallon Fresh Water Tank
  • Enclosed and Heated Underbelly with Forced Heat
  • Outside Shower with Hot and Cold Water
  • Nitrogen-filled Tires
  • 6 Cubic Feet Gas/Electric DSI Refrigerator
  • Stainless Steel Oven and Microwave
  • Wall Mounted Systems Monitor Panel
  • Dry weight 5828 – 8770

Crossroads is one of the many subsidiaries of the Thor company collective. Thor started in 1980, and it has grown dramatically. The range of the RV quality varies, but the Crossroads Zinger has some pretty good feedback.

As far as budget class travel trailers go, relatively speaking, these are solidly built with good quality control. Most warranty problems seem to come to reasonable resolutions. They have some lightweight models (Less than 5,000 Pounds), so the weaker tow vehicles have some options.

6. Jayco Jay Fight SLX

Jayco Jay Fight SLX

  • 2-Year Limited Warranty
  • 6-Gallon Gas Water Heater (7-Feet-Wide floor plans)
  • 6-Gallon DSI Water Heater (8-Feet-Wide floor plans)
  • Stabilizer Jacks with Sand Pads(2 in 7-Feet-Wide; 4 in 8-Feet-Wide)
  • Front Diamond Plate
  • Bathroom Skylight
  • Sleeps 3-13
  • Dry weight 2,555 – 7,445

Jayco trailers has been around for half a century, and like Thor, has built an empire. The SLX’s are one of many model lines, and one of its standout features is its lightweight floor plans. If you are interested in the lighter weight plans, you should be aware of the floors. Some floor plans have composite flooring and some have plywood. It has been noted that the Jayco’s composite flooring can develop soft spots, and that the plywood floors don’t have that issue.

Aside from the composite flooring, it has a good reputation. There are some expected durability issues and those, of course, become bigger issues as “lightweight” becomes the highlight feature.

7. Keystone LAREDO

Keystone LAREDO

  • Exterior Marine Grade Speakers
  • Fully Enclosed Underbelly
  • Exterior Shower with Hot & Cold Water
  • Auto Leveling Jack
  • Dinette and Storage
  • Residential-size Cabinets

  • Arched Ceiling
  • 8 Cubic Foot Refrigerator
  • 50” Residential Showers
  • Sleeps 4-10
  • Dry weight 6235 – 12935

These travel trailers have a reputation for being a good value for their price-point. Minor repairs throughout are expected, as with everything. The quality is good, so it is dependable enough.

8. Micro Lite Bunkhouse

Micro Lite Bunkhouse

  • Engineered Mold and Mildew Resistant Floor Covering
  • Ducted Furnace
  • 13,5000 BTU Ducted Air (N/A 19FBS, 19FD, 19FDBH)

  • 44” Dinette (Depending on the floor plan)
  • Single Door Auto Gas/Electric (19FDBH, 19FD, 19FBS)

  • Water-Pur Filtration System
  • 110 DSI Gas/Electric Six Gallon “Quick Recovery” Water Heater By-Pass Kit
  • Dry weight 3,339 – 5,277

As you can tell by both the name and the weight range, these are the trailers of choice if you don’t have a strong tow vehicle. Their compact floor plans are great for vacationing on a budget.

9. Coachmen Chaparral

2016 Dealer Satisfaction Index Quality Circle Award Winner

Inconsistent quality is a pretty big problem. Some reviews are shining and others are not. Looking through reviews and forums, customer service does not appear to be great. Multiple owners have reported having difficulty getting through to the company and some say that the calls are never returned.

10. The Voltage

The Voltage

  • In-Command Operating System ( Control RV Functions From Phone )
  • Central Vacuum
  • Rear Electric Jacks
  • Furion Stereo System with Upgraded Powered Subwoofer
  • Full Sized 21” Oven
  • Atwood 10 Gallon Gas Electric Water Heater w/DSI and 19.7 Gallon/Hours Recovery
  • 8 Cubic Feet Refrigerator
  • Queen Bed (Depends on the Model)
  • King Bed (Depends on the Model)
  • Satellite Prep for All Four TV Locations
  • Cherry Hardwood Cabinet Doors
  • Voltage Happi-Jac Electric Bed & Roll Over Sofa System w/Table
  • Prepped for Solar Power
  • Sleeps 7 – 13
  • Dry weight 13,113 – 15,983

There are two versions the Voltage Line. There is the Voltage line and then there is the Voltage Epic line. Both of them offer the bunk bed feature, but we are just going to focus on the Basic Voltage line for today.

The more I look into Dutchmen, the more I like them. Out of the many manufacturers that I have researched (50+), they are one of the most consistently praised by their patrons. I’m not getting paid to say that; It is just what I have noticed.

11. Keystone RV Outback Ultra Lite

Keystone RV Outback Ultra Lite

  • Large Panoramic Windows
  • 36” Flush Floor Slides
  • Bath Skylight
  • His and Her Lighting
  • Tub Surround
  • Polypropylene Heated Enclosed Underbelly
  • Outside Camp Kitchen (Most Models)
  • Front Diamond Plate Rock Guard
  • Electric Awning with LED Strip Lights
  • Sleeps 4 – 8
  • Dry weight 4,921 – 6,676

Considered to be medium-level quality trailer with a relatively pleased customer base. It is lightweight, so there will be a drop in overall durability. The most prolific issues seem to be with the roof, so do a thorough inspection of the ceiling before purchasing if this line of trailers interest you.

12. Freedom Express Ultra Lite

Freedom Express Ultra Lite

Defining Features (The features listed the Freedom Value Package)

  • 2 External Speakers, 4 rnal Speakers
  • Ducted Furnace (Not in Trailers Smaller Than 25’)
  • Ducted Ceiling, Air Conditioning (Not in Trailers Smaller Than 25’)
  • Satellite Ready
  • Spare Tire Kit
  • Heated Enclosed Underbelly (Not in the Expandable’s)
  • Sleeps 8 – 10
  • Dry weight 5,263 – 7,734

The 320BHDS has been noted to have a “design flaw” that ruins the floors with water when driving through hard rain. It appears to be an issue with that specific model, so be aware of that. The year was unspecified.

Coachmen was purchased by Forest River in 2008, and some have expressed concern about a potential drop in dependability. However, the quality hasn’t appeared to be negatively affected, and overall, they seem to be maintaining a level of quality that is competitively consistent.

13. Shasta Travel Trailer

Shasta Trailer

  • 18,000 BTU Furnace
  • Marine Grade External Speakers
  • 13,500 BTU AC
  • 6 Cubic Foot Refrigerator (3’ for 18’ models)

  • 1-Year Coachnet Roadside Assistance Program
  • 1-Year Forest River Hitch-to-Bumper Warranty
  • Sleeps up-to 10
  • Dry weight 3,182 – 5,893

Good construction, good interior storage, and wide-bodied; those are the kinds of comments that I have been coming across. I’m not finding a lot of bad reviews with this one. This line of trailers has an uncommonly positive level of feedback

14. Forest River Salem

Salem Trailer

  • 12-Year Roof Warranty
  • Triple Seal Slide Out System
  • Dometic Double Door Refrigerator (2 Year Warranty)
  • 3 Burner Range (2 Year Warranty)
  • 13,500 BTU Roof Air Conditioner w/ Quick Cool
  • 25BTU Suburban Forced Air DSI Furnace w/ Digital Thermostat (2 Year Warranty)
  • Solid Bedroom PrivacyDoors (Most Models)
  • Dry weight 6,223 – 9,139

Forest River is a budget class RV, so I’m not going to lie and say that everything is fantastic. The sealant will need to be replaced, screws are going to pop out, and parts will eventually fall into disrepair. You should do your research, so that you know what you should expect from an RV within this price range. After accepting that these lower-priced RVs are going to be problematic, you will know whether or not you should pay for something a bit higher up on the RV food chain.

So, why am I recommending it? Honestly, it isn’t a horrible starting point. If you aren’t ready to buy a mid-to-high range RV, then this is a good early step. It will serve you provided that you are also ready to serve it with a little elbow grease and a little more know-how.

15. Shadow Cruiser

Shadow Cruiser

  • 6’9” Vaulted Ceiling
  • Dual Ducted 13.5 BTU A/C
  • High Gloss Fiberglass Exterior
  • Hardwood Framed Cabinet Doors
  • Power Awning with LED Strip
  • 6 Gallon DSI Gas/Electric Water Heater
  • Dry weight 4,340 – 7,260

Built on a budget; the Shadow Cruiser isn’t a top of the line class. It is, however, a way for families to get into the camper life without breaking the bank. These are some of the best selling RVs on the market because they make the first steps of this RV adventure a little bit easier. If you are prepared to take on the responsibilities of RV ownership…and that means making the occasional repair that budget RVs inherently present, then this might be an RV line worth considering.

Easy Alternative Bunk Bed Option

Buying a new travel trailer is a big purchase and I along with others recommend looking around for a year before your purchase since it gives you time to see all the models on the market as well as for the new models to gather up some reviews. An easy option in the meantime is to simply pack a set of bunk beds in your current trailer. This bunk bed from Kid-O-Bunk on Amazon is a nice alternative that may work nicely for you until you are ready to make the big purchase.

Conclusion on RVs with Bunk Beds

There are a lot of trailers to choose from when deciding on the best bunkhouse trailer for your family and there are still more to choose from that we did not include on our list. I recommend this list as merely a starting point. Not every trailer that is good for one family is good for another. Features vary widely and it’s important you take your time to choose the right one for your family. Explore the options available and see what works for you.

If you’ve been shopping for a new travel trailer with bunkhouse features, you’re in the right place. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best bunkhouse travel trailers available so you and your family can hit the road in style.

But what exactly is a bunkhouse travel trailer, and what should you consider when shopping for a new one? Let’s learn more about this unique style of travel trailer so you can get your questions answered.

Already know you want a bunkhouse travel trailer?

Check out the table of contents below to jump ahead and see all of our favorites:

What Is A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

A bunkhouse travel trailer essentially means you are purchasing a style of trailer with bunk beds inside. Bunkhouse travel trailers also imply secondary living space, where bunk beds and couches create a unique second living space inside the RV.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are often larger than traditional travel trailers, given the need for extra sleeping space. These types of RVs are perfect for large families or groups of people, especially those with younger children comfortable with bunk bed sleeping arrangements.

However, you may be interested in a bunkhouse travel trailer whether or not you have kids. They often have unique layouts and ample living space you wouldn’t normally get in a standard travel trailer layout. Some bunkhouse travel trailers even have two bathrooms, which I find a game-changer when multiple people are camping on board!

What To Consider In A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

Wondering what you should consider in a bunkhouse travel trailer? Here are some expert tips and pointers to keep in mind while you shop for your new RV.

Sleeping Arrangements

The most important consideration for your new bunkhouse travel trailer is knowing how many people can sleep in it, and how many people on average you expect to travel with.  Bunkhouse travel trailers truly maximize sleeping arrangements, and some RVs can even have bunk beds that are three beds tall!

You’re most likely interested in this style of travel trailer because of its high sleep capacity.  However, when an RV tells you how many people can sleep inside, this doesn’t mean everyone is sleeping comfortably. If you plan on traveling with more adults than kids, you should make sure the sleeping arrangements suit everyone accordingly.

Number Of Bathrooms

Traveling with a large group of people may mean you need multiple bathrooms in your bunkhouse travel trailer. Thankfully, this is a common request and most RV manufacturers have already planned for this when designing the layout of bunkhouse rigs. One bathroom is standard in just about any travel trailer unless you are shopping around for a smaller model with only a wet bath or no bathroom at all.

However, many large travel trailers or fifth wheels offer multiple bathroom situations.  You may not get a full secondary bath, but a half-bath onboard is possible, which typically includes a sink and an additional toilet. Sometimes, this is all you need when camping with a group of people or family members.

Style And Overall Aesthetics

Bunkhouses are fun for the whole family, especially when you consider both the interior and exterior style and look of the trailer. While most RVs have a special sort of ugly style to them , you may find a bunkhouse that makes you feel cool.

Many travel trailers have multiple interior design options, and you can further customize your look and feel with your own personal touches. There’s nothing better than an RV living area that feels lived-in rather than brand new and sterile.

Bunkhouse Layout

The layout of your travel trailer is key no matter what style of rig you’re looking at, but this is especially the case with bunkhouse travel trailers. After all, the layout will be greatly affected by large bunkhouse living areas. Many travel trailers situate the bunk room toward the back of the travel trailer to allow further privacy and separation from other parts of the rig.

This can be especially valuable if you plan on traveling with a large group of children, as they can have their own space.  However, no two travel trailers are the same, and you should make sure the layout works best for you and your family as well as any additional guests. Privacy is key for a bunkhouse travel trailer, but it’s wise to pay attention to the other living areas as well.

Total Length

Bunkhouse travel trailers can get pretty large, which is why you should pay attention to the overall length of your new rig. While the extra square footage may be necessary to allow everyone to come along on vacation, you may be surprised to hear that the length of your rig matters.

Many national and state parks have RV length rules or limits in place depending on the location and style of the park. This could be a wake-up call for those of you with rigs over 35 feet long- and most bunkhouse rigs are this large.  However, these rules are different from park to park, and your bunkhouse travel trailer may do just fine on your travels. I find it’s always a good idea to call ahead before making reservations at campgrounds.

Weight

As previously mentioned, most bunkhouse travel trailers are mighty big. This means it’s vital to pay close attention to various travel trailer weights and the overall weight limit of your tow vehicle for optimum safety. Y ou should never shop for a brand-new rig without first knowing what tow vehicle you plan on using and how much weight it can carry.

Since travel trailers are lighter than ever these days, you may be surprised how heavy some of these rigs actually are. Your tow vehicle may be able to handle the RV model you’re looking at, no problem. If not, it’s best to upgrade your tow vehicle or look at more compact, lightweight travel trailer options.

Budget

Finally, the last thing you should consider when shopping for a new travel trailer, bunkhouse or otherwise, is your budget. Travel trailers can vary widely in their cost, depending on amenities and the overall luxury of the rig.

You can easily create a budget and anticipate spending, but be sure to take a look at any non-standard features or options you can install on your new travel trailer. Many optional features are considered necessary by RVers, such as auto leveling and solar panels, but they will increase the overall expense substantially.

Benefits Of A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer

Curious to learn more about bunkhouse travel trailers? Here is a list of some potential benefits opting for a bunkhouse travel trailer can bring. Remember, it may be worth considering purchasing a good-quality used RV if you’re on a tight budget. My rig was an absolute steal secondhand, and I don’t regret a single thing about not buying a brand-new rig!

Many Different Layouts

After years of looking at different RV layouts and setups, bunkhouse travel trailers have some of the most unique ones I’ve ever seen. This is likely due to the creativity involved when adding an additional sleeping area.

You can expect a lot of unique features while shopping for bunkhouse travel trailers, and it may make these rigs appealing to you if you hadn’t considered this style of travel trailer before. It’s definitely worth looking at these travel trailers for this reason alone!

Room For The Whole Family

One of the main reasons many people choose a bunkhouse travel trailer is because they have room for the whole family, or perhaps room for an entire group of friends. These travel trailers maximize sleeping arrangements so you can bring as many people along as possible.

Again, this may not be ideal for a group of adults, especially those not expecting to share a room. However, that’s partially what camping is about, and bunkhouse travel trailers still ensure everyone is comfortable, even if they are sharing a bunk bed.

Space Saving Bunks

Speaking of sleeping arrangements, bunkhouses are designed with space-saving bunk beds so you can maximize both the guest sleeping arrangements and the overall storage space. Even if you don’t plan on feeling every single bunk bed onboard your new travel trailer, you still have ample bunks to use for storage or other purposes. You won’t have to worry about leaving anything at home if you buy one of these rigs!

Ample Storage For Cargo

Whether you plan on using the bunk beds for storage or require storage elsewhere, bunkhouse travel trailers give you tons of storage, both inside and out. This can be incredibly beneficial, especially when traveling with large groups of people who will each have their own belongings.

While a bunkhouse-style travel trailer may not be a first choice if you plan on living full-time in your rig , you may find this layout works well for you in terms of having enough room for clothes, personal effects, food storage, and more.

Extra RV Amenities

Even the most basic of bunkhouse travel trailers have a decent amount of RV amenities that you may not initially expect. If you’re able to purchase a more luxury travel trailer, then expect even more amenities than a simpler, budget-friendly model.

For example, you can expect plush mattresses, additional entertainment centers, at least a 50 amp RV service, and much more with just about any bunkhouse trailer purchase. The main living area may have theater seating, and your dining area may also be upgraded to accommodate additional people.

The list doesn’t stop there, but it will depend on the individual travel trailer you’re looking at for what sort of amenities you’ll receive. If you have something specific in mind, the RV manufacturer will no doubt tell you whether or not it’s possible.

Privacy From The Kids

Many RVers purchase bunkhouse travel trailers so they have ample space for the kids to hang out in. This gives adults privacy, and also some separation from their children while everyone is hanging out inside the rig.

While you can always just send the kids outside, this isn’t always an option, especially when camping in inclement weather. A bunkhouse travel trailer can make camping trips all the more restful and peaceful with a dedicated space for the kids!

10 Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Ready to take a look at some of the best bunkhouse travel trailers available on the market today? Here are our top seven choices, full of information so you can make an informed decision and get started on your RVing journey!

Best Overall: Forest River Heritage Glen

Forest River makes some fantastic rigs, and the Heritage Glen is no exception. Available in both a hyper-lyte and classic trailer model with various floorplans, it’s easy to find a Heritage Glen to suit every RVer out there! Five of the multiple floorplans feature innovative bunkhouse arrangements, which is not only impressive but rarely found in the travel trailer world!

No one has to feel left out, as Forest River has made it effortless for the whole family to jump on board. The Heritage Glen is c hock full of features, some of which include high-quality herringbone-style vinyl flooring, hardwood cabinetry, and an actual porcelain toilet. Yes, I’m honestly not kidding! This is a trailer with a perfect blend of functionality and luxury, which is what I want, living full-time on the road.

This travel trailer is built with opulence in mind from start to finish. The bunkhouse models on this rig have double-bed stackable bunks, providing sleeping areas for several people – some models have two sets of bunk beds!  This particular rig is built wider to accommodate the extra bunks, as well as also being equipped with extra large pass-through storage compartments. This may make the Wildwood Heritage Glen a little trickier to drive , but any nerves will be obliterated after a few drives!

Not only is this travel trailer built with gorgeous finishing touches and convenient features, but it’s also bursting with luxury on the interior too. The electric fireplace is a promise for cozy winter evenings, and the unique peninsula kitchen is bursting with countertop space and panoramic windows so I can admire the finest views of nature. There’s also a family-sized dinette to enjoy, along with convertible furniture, a half bath, and an outdoor dog hitching station complete with safety mechanisms to keep fluffy friends safe too.

Best For Large Families: Jayco Eagle

Towable by most half-ton trucks and SUVs, the Jayco Eagle has two awesome bunkhouse-style floorplans, which bring the sleeping capabilities of this trailer to an incredible 10 people! Jayco is a popular name in the RV world, which is no surprise as their rigs boast top-quality construction and customer support.

Jayco’s warranties help calm any nerves for new RVers, and purchasing quality-made rigs results in happy campers. The Jayco Eagle is ideal for large families who need ample space both for sleeping and using a trailer in the best way possible. With bunkhouse options, everyone can sleep easily, and since the Eagle varies in length from 34′ 10″ to 38′ 9″, there’s ample space to keep things airy inside.

The overall length of each Eagle floorplan is pretty long, especially for first-time towing, but some might say it’s best to jump in the deep end! I would definitely advise taking some practice tows first, though, as it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry! For those with a tow car able to handle the Eagle, t he interior design is truly where Jayco shines.

They offer all-wood cabinetry, specialty laminate flooring, several windows to flood the space with natural light, and quality convertible furniture for sleeping multiple people. Jayco constructs their rigs on a lightweight but sturdy aluminum frame which helps keep things lightweight. The fiberglass molded walls and roof are also lightweight, meaning less stress and strain on the tow vehicle.

The bunkhouse floor plans have exterior kitchens so I can enjoy the great outdoors for the entirety of my camping trip. While there’s ample living space inside the travel trailer, I like knowing I don’t have to solely spend all of my time inside! The perks found in this travel trailer are too many to list, from a second ducted AC to a power and auto leveling jack system to bring ultimate convenience to every campground trip!

Lightest Weight: Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite

It’s possible to find a bunkhouse travel trailer that doesn’t weigh too much, and the Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite is well worth a close look. This particular model of travel trailer is fantastic for several reasons, not just its lightweight nature and 13 floorplans! Each floorplan ranges in length from 25′ 6″ to 34′ 5″ making the Apex Ultra-Lite a great fit for a wide range of avid campers!

Out of all of the floorplans, seven have bunk bed options, allowing families to take vacations in style and comfort, all inside a lightweight rig! The largest bunkhouse floor plan weighs less than 6,000 pounds so even modest cars and SUVs should be able to tow this Coachmen rig .  While the interior design seems a little beige, all of the cabinetry and countertops are made from quality materials, and it only takes the addition of some decorative belongings to spruce things up a bit!

You can bet these fixtures will last the lifetime of the rig, even if they may need a bit of help in bringing some color and personality. Coachmen is a division of Forest River, which means the construction of each bunkhouse travel trailer will be solid. All of the walls are made from well-insulated Azdel and bonded fiberglass so no matter the season, the Apex Ultra-Lite can tackle it!

This rig also comes complete with double or full-sized bunk beds making it possible to sleep a large group of people on board. Some of the floor plans also have exclusive master suites with walk-around queen beds which is a piece of luxury I miss from living in a traditional home! There are solar panels and solar prep as standard, though I think some of the non-standard features are worth a look too.

Some of these options include dark and frameless tinted windows, additional amps, a second AC unit, and theater seating.  Coachmen will also back your purchase with a fantastic warranty and owner’s club. If you are worried about being able to tow a bunkhouse travel trailer, you don’t have to worry anymore with this lightweight model!

Travel Trailer With Multiple Bunk Beds: Dutchmen Astoria

Speaking of multiple bunk beds, the Dutchman Astoria is another fantastic model for catering to various sleeping needs from small families to large groups of friends. This Dutchmen can sleep a maximum of 11 people, depending on the floorplan of course! There are 15 floorplans in total, measuring in length from 29′ 11″ to 42′ 5″, meaning I can choose a size best suited to my towing ability and storage situation!

The Astoria offers four different bunkhouse models, and all of them offer a multiple bunkbed scenario. Creating sleeping areas for the kids or friends coming along for a weekend adventure means quality time spent together for everyone.  Safety is always the number one priority for me, and so I love that Dutchmen have loaded their rigs with safety features.

Quality steel frames, a power tongue jack, and heavy-duty tires all work together to create a rugged camper that’s reliable, secure, and durable. The interior of the Dutchmen Astoria is lovely, with many homey features, including an electric fireplace and pantry storage in the kitchen . Personally, I find stainless steel appliances have an unbeatable classic look, so the kitchen in this rig is perfect for my tastes. Paired with the quality backsplash the kitchen is easy to clean and a joy to spend time in.

This rig doesn’t just look good, but it functions well too, partly thanks to the standard 50 amp service of the Astoria. Having enough power on board is essential for appliances such as microwaves or AC units, and 50 amps is a solid amount to start off with. I like the contemporary feel of this rig, with the intricate arched ceiling and overall modern design. The kitchen is clean and white, but I think adding a little color would really help bring the inside to life even more!

The larger models of the Dutchmen Astoria may be too big for some to handle, but the smaller models are well worth considering, and with several bunkhouse options available, there’s a good shot this rig could be the right fit for you! Dutchmen also offer many different warranty options as well as a comprehensive customer service line, so I can have all of my questions answered with ease.

Best For The Pets: Coachmen Northern Spirit

The Coachmen Northern Spirit is a fantastic rig for the entire family, including furry friends. They have many classy and exclusive features available onboard this rig, especially in the bunkhouse models. I’d be lost if I couldn’t bring my pup along for RVing antics, so the Northern Spirit is an ideal rig for me and my partner! With six different bunkhouse options to choose from, the Northern Spirit has an array of layouts for all kinds of RVing groups.

Not only do some models have bathtubs and double bunks, but there are dedicated pet features so furry friends can be just as comfortable too! Some of these features include built-in food dishes, an outdoor hitching post for a dog leash, and an outdoor shower complete with a doggy bath area. The exterior of this rig continues to impress, with powered awnings and exterior LED lighting. As for the interior, the Northern Spirit is a good-looking rig on the inside and outside!

Floorplan dependant, this bunkhouse trailer has a spacious kitchen, a bar-style breakfast nook, and even theater seating for ultimate comfort. The interior also features multiple bunk beds along with a master bedroom so my partner and I can have some privacy.  I’m impressed by the volume of standard features, such as a detachable power cord, a solar panel with room to spare, and exterior speakers so I can bring the party outside during the summer.

The 50 amp electrical service and secondary AC unit in the master suite mean comfort even during the summer. No matter how hot it gets outside, I like that I can keep the entire travel trailer cool using this simple add-on. Like the other Coachmen model on this list, the interior design may be a little bland for some tastes, but nothing I don’t think some throws and cushions couldn’t sort out!

Best For Entertaining: Palomino Puma

Palomino claims to offer the most bunkhouse travel trailer options in the industry, and I’m starting to see why. The Palomino Puma has 31 different floorplans across both the travel trailer and fifth wheel models, with an astonishing 14 layouts featuring bunk beds! The Puma is a beauty inside and out, offering ample pass thru storage, sturdy fiberglass exterior walls, and power awnings with LED lighting.

I appreciate the safety step as I can sometimes be a bit clumsy, but together with the outdoor lighting, safety in the dark is greatly improved. The exterior speakers are perfect for entertaining guests of all ages, and the bunkhouse interior on select floorplans is what makes this rig fit for big families. With so many floorplans, it’s possible to find a bunkhouse option with two master suites, making it a perfect fit for kiddos, parents, and even grandparents!

The Puma is ideal for entertaining given the open layout allowing for easy transition through different areas of the rig. There are layouts featuring kitchens with islands and large countertops, or living rooms equipped with theater seating and electric fireplaces, ideal for cozy winter nights.  This rig is built for adventure as well as connection, as it’s prewired for solar and WiFi. It has interior Bluetooth speakers and an entertainment center so everyone can keep happy and uplifted while traveling the open road.

Once the destination is reached, the power jack and built-in stabilizers help make the setup quick and easy, which is what I need after a long afternoon of driving! I’m also grateful for the ample storage throughout the Palomino Puma, as it means dirty gear can be stored away securely outside, limiting dirt and mess inside the trailer.

This trailer offers many floorplans across a wide variety of travel trailer lengths that makes it feel like there’s a layout for everybody. The roomy interior is finished in an open-plan way that’s perfect for entertaining, even if the party makes its way outside!

Best Indoor/Outdoor Bunkhouse: Keystone Outback Ultra Lite

Speaking of indoor/outdoor partying, the Keystone Outback Ultra Lite is a trailer with bunkhouse options to fit any RVer. This bunkhouse model has a lot to offer, and not only because it’s all housed on a super sturdy and lightweight aluminum frame.  With 9 floorplans and a few of them serving as bunkhouses, there’s a lot to get excited about with this semi-luxurious travel trailer. Keystone makes quality rigs too, with four-season capable options which is exactly what I need, traveling year-round in my rig.

The largest model available under the Outback Ultra Lite name includes an outdoor kitchen , a rear bunkhouse, and a large electric fireplace, creating a welcoming interior. The master bedroom features a walk-around bed and a built-in pet kennel underneath with ample storage so our pup can have a dedicated place to sleep and relax.

The living areas on this particular travel trailer are spacious and accommodating, with open kitchens and dining nooks. The u-shaped dinettes can seat the whole family on some models, which is great considering some of these floor plans can sleep up to 10 people! I love it when the whole family can get together for an RVing adventure, but often it can be tricky to sleep everyone, but not in this Keystone rig!

One of the biggest perks of this travel trailer for me is the abundance of outdoor kitchen accessories available. I’m able to utilize a stove, sink, and mini fridge outside the RV, while an entire residential kitchen awaits me indoors should the weather turn bad quickly! Keystone offers multiple comprehensive warranties for their rigs, and I’m instantly reassured by the high-quality construction of each Keystone travel trailer.

The Outback Ultra Lite is also fit with 4G LTW and Wi-Fi prep for staying connected even in the heart of nature. There’s also ducted heating and cooling which helps to make this rig four-season capable and promises successful all-season adventuring.  There’s a lot on offer with this trailer, especially for those who enjoy both being warm and secure inside an RV, but also heading out into the wilderness at any opportunity!

Best Budget-Friendly: Winnebago Micro Minnie

Out of the 11 floorplans available with the Winnebago Micro Minnie , 4 of them are bunkhouse layouts, creating room to sleep up to 5 people. This isn’t as many as the Palomino Puma, so large families may have to opt for a bigger rig. However, small families or groups of travelers will fit perfectly in this attractive trailer from one of the best budget-friendly RV brands out there!

Winnebago has been in the RV game for some time, and this is reflected throughout all of their rigs, including the Micro Minnie. The smallest floorplan has an overall length of 19′ 5″, while the biggest model measures a substantial 25′ 5″. As the name suggests, the Minnie isn’t the biggest travel trailer out there, but for the price, it boasts an array of great features.

An open galley kitchen equipped with a 3-burner cooktop, convection microwave, and large fridge bring functionality to the trailer and an overall clean kitchen aesthetic. There’s an optional upgrade of European-style cabinetry, but if you don’t mind a more standard finish, keeping away from optional extras will help reduce the final cost.

The large windows throughout this Winnebago allow fresh air to dance throughout the trailer, and help keep things smelling good. I like that the interior isn’t full of storage at every single possibility, and this is thanks to both the interior and exterior storage solutions to keep everything stowed away neatly and securely.

I love spending time outdoors, and although there aren’t too many exterior features with the Micro Minnie, the JBL Premium exterior speakers and powered patio awning with integrated LED lighting help bring personality and fun to the outside of the rig as well. The 200W of solar power on the roof is fantastic for boondocking, but personally, I would like a bit more power so I can run everything in my rig without the use of a noisy generator!

Most Luxurious: Grand Design RV Imagine

Not every floorplan of the Grand Design RV Imagine is a bunkhouse one, but a couple are, and since Grand Design are renowned for producing luxurious rigs, I couldn’t leave the Imagine off our list! Typical of Grand Design RV, the Imagine is constructed with the highest quality possible, with the sidewalls, rear wall, slide-room walls, and slide-room roof all packed with rigid foam insulation.

Not only does this result in a sturdy trailer, but this also means better temperature regulation throughout the year. It’s also possible to walk on the roof which is a game-changer for completing maintenance tasks like covering the RV for summer to prevent sun damage. The enclosed underbelly and double insulated floor also help to regulate the temperature and will help keep the rig in better condition for longer too.

Even the roof is as strong as anything and is backed by an 18-year warranty. I don’t think I’ve seen a warranty this impressive from any other RV! There’s more to the Imagine than just an impressive exterior, however, and the inside of this rig is the dream blend of luxury and practicality. Some of the internal features across select floorplans include double bunk sleeping, a booth dinette, a queen bed, a spacious bathroom with a skylight above the shower, theater seating, and an awning.

It seems Grand Design has thought about pretty much everything with the Imagine, and each layout can be tailored to suit such a diverse range of RVers. This luxury does come at a bit of a higher price than other trailers on our list such as the previously mentioned Winnebago, but the Imagine is a stunning rig, promising adventures far and wide for many years to come.

Best With Slide Outs: Cruiser RV Embrace

Cruiser RV isn’t a name I hear mentioned too often, even though they’ve been in the RV game since 1988! The Cruiser RV Embrace is a travel trailer with 6 different floorplans, with 4 innovative bunkhouse options, ideal for families. The Embrace utilizes slide-outs to enhance the interior space, and this is one of the reasons the interior feels so airy and spacious.

There are many pros and cons to owning a rig with slide-outs as they are another component that will need maintaining, however, they bring extra room and can save the day when last-minute guests want to jump on board for vacation! Starting at just 5,904 lbs and 30′ 8″ in length, the Cruiser Embrace is by no means a small trailer! Measuring in at over 30′ might be too long for some RVers, especially those new to towing.

However, I find practice makes perfect, and my confidence increased substantially after the first few trips I took towing my travel trailer, so don’t lose hope! A couple of layouts are able to sleep upwards of 10 people without a drop of hassle, and this is due to the addition of creative bunk sleeping areas. Along with comfortable beds, there’s also comfortable seating throughout, a dinette, a spacious kitchen, and more to make camping on the road as convenient and fun as possible.

Slide-outs might not be to everyone’s tastes, but in the Embrace, they are fundamental to each and every layout option. The aluminum roof, power awning, underbelly storage, and solar prep, all help make the exterior as impressive as the interior. Upgrading to a 50 amp service is possible with some models, and something I would look into as having more power on board means less stress through cold, dark winters.

Overall, the Cruiser RV Embrace is a solid trailer, equipped with slide-outs, helping create a spacious camper where everyone can feel at home and families can make long-lasting memories. The only downside with this rig for me, is that the holding tanks are only 30 gallons, which is a little on the small side, especially for full-time living and boondocking. However, if this isn’t a dealbreaker, the Embrace is worth considering for a bunkhouse trailer with elegance, slide-outs, and an array of impressive features.

Final Thoughts

Bunkhouse travel trailers are some of the most spacious and unique RV options on the market today. We’ve hopefully helped narrow down your RV search by showcasing some of the best bunkhouse travel trailers around! Finding the perfect RV often takes time and patience, but I trust that you’re not too far away from finding the perfect rig to kickstart your RVing journey.

We toured hundreds of RVs at this year’s Florida RV SuperShow , and the Keystone Cougar Half-Ton 30BHS was by far my favorite bunkhouse floorplan. The unique layout includes rear bunks that extend the width of the RV.

The position of the bunks creates a separate area for kids and makes the beds more accessible. In the front of the RV is a large, private bedroom with a king bed. The bathroom sits between the living area and the bedroom.

Heartland Trail Runner 31DB

Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers: Trail Runner 31DB

The second Heartland RV on our list of the best bunkhouse travel trailers is the Trail Runner 31DB. This big rig has much more space and many more exciting features than the tiny Pioneer.

The rear of the RV houses an entire kids’ suite. Inside the suite is a private bedroom with a single over double bunk bed, a shirt closet and a half bathroom. In the front of the trailer is a main bedroom with a queen bed and a full bathroom.

In the main living area, there is a dinette booth and a large sofa. The corner kitchen features bright, white cabinets and stainless steel appliances. Perhaps the most unique feature of this RV is the huge pantry, located behind the TV next to the entry door.

Venture SportTrek ST333VIK

Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers: Venture SportTrek ST333VIK

Another amazing (and enormous) rear bunkhouse travel trailer is the Venture SportTrek ST333VIK. The bunkroom includes a normal height single bed, and a raised top bunk which sits over a storage cabinet.

The lower bed is perfect both for smaller children who are at risk of falling from higher bunks and teenagers who need more headroom. The huge bunkroom is also great for teenagers because it also has a sofa (with another flip-up bunk above it), a table and a flip-up desk.

Outside the bunkroom is a full (second) bathroom. The other bathroom is located in the front of the trailer next to the main bedroom with a queen bed.

While the bunkroom is the star of this RV, the main living area does not disappoint either. With the optional king dinette, the combination sofa/dining area can comfortably seat 5 to 6 people. The large kitchen has an island and a hutch that makes a perfect coffee station.

Keystone Hideout 38FKTS

The main bedroom has a queen bed and is located in the rear of the trailer. The full bath sits between the two bedrooms. In the main living area, there is a dinette booth, a recliner and a trifold sofa. The front kitchen has white cabinets and tons of storage space.

10 Best Travel Trailers With a Bunkhouse

Travel Trailers With Bunkhouse Cover

Sharing is caring!

Travel trailers with a bunkhouse are a great option for those with kids, but they are also a fun option for the kid in you. A bunkhouse offers that little bit of extra sleeping room that’s often lacking in standard travel trailers.

Plus, it’s great for traveling with friends or extended family when you need that extra bunk or two to make it happen. Adults typically prefer to avoid sleeping on the floor unless there are a lot of good bourbons involved.

Not all travel trailers with a bunkhouse are created equally, which is great for you if you’re in the market for one. They generally range from 22’ to 40’, with a ton of floorplan options and the efficiency of extra sleeping space.

What’s the Difference Between a Bunkhouse and a Travel Trailer?

What’s the Difference Between a Bunkhouse and a Travel Trailer

Technically, they’re both still travel trailers. The only difference is the bunkhouse option has bunk beds or some variation of a bunk. Travel trailers dominate the RV camping industry. There are so many of them it’s easy to get confused as to which is the best.

Manufacturers of travel trailers with a bunkhouse use some pretty ingenuous ways to fit those bunks in there as well, including lofts, which help maintain plenty of vertical space. There’s also a large enough variety, including affordable, mid-range, and premium options.

Plus, bunkhouse travel trailers always seem to have the edge regarding a suitable floor plan. If you lay out the bunkhouse models next to their standard cousins, it’s easy to see that bunkhouse versions often have a spacier layout.

10 Best Travel Trailers with a Bunkhouse

Travel trailers with a bunkhouse have a nice indoor aesthetic, especially when the bunkhouse resembles a loft. Depending on the size of your family, sleeping space is one of the key factors, along with budget and quality.

That said, here are some of the best travel trailers with a bunkhouse on the market today.

1. Jayco Jay Flight 294QBS

Travel Trailers with a Bunkhouse Jayco Jay Flight 294QBS Exterior

Our Pros and Cons:

✅ Quad bunks in the rear

⛔ Dark interior aesthetic might not be for everyone

  • UVW: 6,715lbs
  • GVWR: 8,250lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 910lbs
  • CCC: 1,535lbs
  • Length: 35’ 7”

The quad-bunk room in the back is very spacious. With two foldable beds for optional storage while the others are stationary. The camp-side bunks are a little wider than the right side, but there are plenty of windows and lights for all four.

The Jayco Jay Flight 294QBS sleeps up to 10. Not only can you bring your family along, but they can also bring their friends. Everyone will have a place to sleep.

There is only one full bath, which may have trouble accommodating 10 people, but it’s nice nonetheless. The Queen bed sits on the road side of the trailer, next to a loaded kitchen and entertainment combo, seamlessly integrated and loaded with amenities.

The dinette is U-shaped, restaurant style, and sits next to a jackknife sofa. The kitchen contains all the expected amenities, and it’s easy to take everything outside to the exterior kitchen if needed.

2. Grand Design Imagine 3210BH

Grand Design Imagine 3210BH Exterior

✅ Interior is one of the spaciest designs on the market

⛔Pass-through bathroom is lacking in the way of privacy

  • UVW: 8,394lbs
  • GVWR: 10,195lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 889lbs
  • CCC: 1,801lbs
  • Length: 36’ 11”

The Grand Design Imagine 3210BH pulls off a magic trick. It’s pretty standard looking from the outside (regarding travel trailer aesthetics). When you step inside, however, the amount of space is truly incredible. “Grand Design” indeed.

If you love the high-tech look, the theater seating is really well-thought-out and designed. The main HD TV sits above the dinette booth, with two flanking, upward-firing speakers.

With all that extra space, the 3210BH designed a quad-bunk room on one end, with two flip-top, 34” bunks on one side and two 30” bunks on the other. The exterior includes an outside kitchen with a fridge, grill, and a 9’ awning.

For those who have boondocking in mind, there is an option to add the Imagine Solar Package to support your power needs off the grid.

3. Keystone Hideout 21BHWE

Keystone Hideout 21BHWE Exterior

✅ Small and easy to tow

⛔ It may be too small for larger families

  • UVW: 4,496lbs
  • GVWR: 7,000lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 538lbs
  • CCC: 2,507lbs
  • Length: 25’ 4”

The Keystone Hideout is one of the most affordable travel trailers with a bunkhouse on our list, with an MSRP of $22,639. One of the main attractions of the Hideout 21BHWE is the versatility of the interior.

The jackknife sofa in the living room converts into a murphy bed, converting the front living space into a bedroom in just a few seconds. The Hideout also includes a set of bunks. Being a little smaller has limitations, so there is no quad-bunk here.

The bunk beds are double-size, and despite the small nature of the Hideout, there is still plenty of space inside, along with several storage options.

With that being said, you can still sleep 7 comfortably. This is also a lightweight travel trailer, making it much easier to hook up and tow, especially with the addition of four stabilizer jacks. The power awning is fully adjustable, and the exterior includes speakers for plenty of outdoor entertainment.

4. Palomino Puma 28BHSS

Travel Trailers with a Bunkhouse Palomino Puma 28BHSS Exterior

✅ The interior is high-quality, with a clear focus on craftsmanship

⛔ The EPDM Rubber Roofing has a unique aesthetic

  • UVW: 7,513lbs
  • GVWR: 9,063lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 835lbs
  • CCC: 1,550lbs
  • Length: 36’

Despite that aesthetic, The Puma 28BHSS comes with a 12-year manufacturing warranty , so it’s hard to argue with that. Puma placed a premium on interior height, and unless you play in the NBA, you’ll never feel like you’re about to bounce your head off the top of a door frame.

The Puma 28BHSS presents a unique idea for the bunk house, with wrap-around bunks floating over a sofa bed. Across from the bunks and sofa is a small corner entertainment center crowned with an HD TV.

As a family, your kids might prefer to spend their entertainment evenings in the bunkhouse rather than the living room. It’s that comfortable. The U-Dinette and sofa are a part of the slide-out, but despite the depth, they’re well situated across from the entertainment center.

The kitchen area is fully loaded, including a walk-in pantry. Everything you need for outdoor cooking and grilling is located in the kitchen. The advantage and value packages add many features already, but the optional limited edition and electric power package features can bring this travel trailer to new heights.

5. Keystone Passport 2401BH

Keystone Passport 2401BH Exterior

✅ Two bathrooms, with one located next to the double bunks

⛔ The microwave is super tiny

  • UVW: 5,670lbs
  • GVWR: 7,600lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 685lbs
  • CCC: 1,930lbs
  • Length: 29’ 3”

The Keystone Passport 2401BH travel trailer bunkhouse was designed with storage in mind. You’ll love this travel trailer bunkhouse if you like to pack heavily. The Passport 2401BH is a part of Keystone’s GT series and is new for 2023.

The bunkhouse in the rear is right next to a rear-corner bathroom, with the other bathroom adjacent to the queen bed. Both bunks are doubles, with a ladder and a bed-length window next to each.

The bottom bunk folds up for more storage options, including pass-through storage. The exterior includes an outdoor kitchen and an extra-large awning to cover all outdoor cooking needs.

The U-dinette converts into a bed, and there is more than enough room to sleep 8. Depending on your floor plan, there is also an optional theater dinette, one of the nicest add-ons if you don’t mind the price jump.

6. Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH

Travel Trailers with a Bunkhouse Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH Exterior

✅ Small enough for SUV and ½ ton pickup towing

⛔ You may want to replace the privacy curtain for the master bed with something thicker

  • UVW: 4,036lbs
  • GVWR: 5,500lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 448lbs
  • CCC: 1,464 lbs
  • Length: 21’ 11”

Some people may be disappointed at the elevated MSRP on a mini-travel trailer BH, and that’s a shame because this one happens to be a very nice bunkhouse option that sleeps 5. Within the 22’ length, Winnebago packed two bunks, a full-size main, and a convertible dinette.

Not bad for one of the smallest trailers on the list. It’s also a well-equipped, smaller travel trailer with bunk beds. The Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH offers a fully equipped kitchen with plenty of storage capacity.

The three-burner stove is standard in this bunkhouse travel trailer and includes a large sink with a high-rise faucet to boot. The dining area is decent, with booth seating that converts into a sleeper. The bathroom is located next to the bunks and is surprisingly sizeable.

It’s not a full-size bathroom, but it’s definitely more than you would expect for a travel trailer this size. The exterior features are standard but premium, including the LED awning, pass-through storage options, and some basic boondocking features.

7. Crossroads Zinger ZR340BH

Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse Crossroads Zinger ZR340BH Exterior

✅ Comes with a very premium design aesthetic and feel

⛔ Control center can be finicky in some models

  • UVW: 9,220lbs
  • GVWR: 11,450lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 1,252lbs
  • CCC: 2,230lbs
  • Length: 38’

The word “zinger” conjures images of something small and streamlined, but the Crossroads Zinger ZR340BH is anything but that idea. This monster is going for the royalty look and, for the most part, pulls it off nicely.

The aesthetic is spot on, and when you throw in the roaring fireplace, king-size bed, and wardrobe/entertainment center, this becomes one of the most comfortable BH travel trailers on the market. It is also easy to get into the storage bays with the Keyed-A-Like Locking system.

It’s a spacious travel trailer that places a premium on privacy, with the bunk area and the king bedroom completely privatized, assuming you like to close doors. There are storage options aplenty, with a nice entertainment center that melds seamlessly with the L-counter in the kitchen.

There’s a lone bathroom, but it retains the overall aesthetic, with enough room to move around. The exterior contains all of the storage and entertainment features you would expect, including a large awning and an outside kitchen built into the side.

8. Coachmen Northern Spirit 2963BH

Coachmen Northern Spirit 2963BH Exterior

✅ Very kid and pet-focused

⛔ The tool center is located next to the door, which may get in the way

  • UVW: 6,408lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 760lbs
  • CCC: 1,192lbs
  • Length: 34’

Coachmen’s Northern Spirit Ultra-Lite Series is relatively new to the world of RVs, but if they keep pushing products like the Northern Spirit 2963BH , they’ll do just fine. For 34’, it’s easy to see why.

This is a popular option for large families, especially with younger kids involved. Both double bunks (the lower one flips up) come with kid’s convenience centers and a bathroom directly adjacent to the bunks.

The bathroom is one of the largest on the list and includes a full tub and a hamper. Plus, it’s accessible with an entranceway from the outside. The queen bed is also a flip-up, flanked by two small wardrobes and plenty of storage beneath the bed.

The U-Dinette is also a convertible bed and includes a pet center. The entertainment center is also a nice touch, butting up against a large L-counter with plenty of surface space. The outside includes storage options and the requisite RV outdoor kitchen.

9. Cruiser Embrace EL280

Cruiser Embrace EL280 Exterior

✅ Spacious and window-friendly for an airy feel

⛔ Entertainment Center TV is angled poorly to the sofa

  • UVW: 6,360lbs
  • GVWR: 9,620lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 820lbs
  • CCC: 3,228lbs
  • Length: 33’ 4”

The Cruiser Embrace EL280 placed a premium on the word “private” with the front bedroom and the three-bed bunkhouse. Each space has doors to close them off from the rest of the trailer. The bunkhouse includes a foldable upper bunk and a lower lounge area.

It’s also conveniently located next to the bathroom, which is large enough to include a bathtub. The unique shape of the sink countertop provides some additional counter space and is located across from a booth-style dining area.

The sofa is highly comfortable and standard size, but the HD TV does have a semi-awkward angle to the couch. The primary bed is king-size, leaving plenty of “walk-around” room on both sides.

10. Lance 2185

 Lance 2185 Exterior

✅ With a focus on “flexible” space, sleeping and space are entirely adjustable

⛔ Flip-top table can get in the way of the front entryway

  • UVW: 5,345lbs
  • GVWR: 7,900lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 915lbs
  • CCC: 2,555lbs
  • Length: 26’ 1”

The bunkhouse in the Lance 2185 features a three-level bunk, with the bottom bed resting on the floor, which is where the flexibility resides. Since the bed folds up, it presents several storage options or other lounging possibilities.

The front bedroom includes a bed that flips down into a couch, with a forward windshield that gives the room an incredible vibe. Two mini-wardrobes flanks the bed, but the room’s overall aesthetic remains spacey and modern.

The kitchen is standard and includes all amenities, including the flip-top counter piece for additional real estate when you’re working in the kitchen. The outside space has hookups for three propane tanks and an optional solar array.

Two lithium-ion batteries, three propane tanks, and the addition of solar panels open up the boondocking options if that’s your thing.

Do You Need a Big Truck to Tow a Bunkhouse?

You don’t need a big truck to tow a bunkhouse travel trailer. Some compact trucks are more than capable of hauling weights above 7,000 lbs. Most bunkhouses are designed for full-size truck hauling, but there are exceptions, like the Winnebago Minnie.

Are Bunkhouses Good for Full-Time Living?

Are Bunkhouses Good for Full-Time Living

Travel trailers with a bunkhouse are good for full-timing. Some of these travel trailers are monstrous in size, and their amenities are perfect. On the other hand, if you have a family of 8 to 10 and own a Winnebago Minnie 2100BH, well, you have fun with that.

How Much Does a Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse Cost?

The price disparity can be pretty wide. For instance, the MSRP on the Keystone Hideout 21BHWE is $22k, while the MSRP on the Grand Design Imagine 3210BH is $67k. The numbers are all over the place, but you shouldn’t expect to exceed $80k in most cases.

How Long are Travel Trailers with Bunkhouses?

Travel trailers with a bunkhouse are long as 40′ and as short as 20′. Manufacturers create floorplans that include bunkhouses without sacrificing standard spaces in a travel trailer.

8 Things to Look for in a Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse

Things to Look for in a Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse

The first and most obvious thing to look for is a bunkhouse. There are sinister things afoot if it’s a travel trailer with a bunkhouse and lacks a bunkhouse.

1. Number of Beds

Aside from the necessary, dedicated bunkbeds, the number of beds is just as important. If you have a large family, four bunks, a convertible dinette, and the main bedroom provide a good deal of sleeping room.

Length is critical, depending on what (if any) sacrifices were made regarding living space. While a 35’ travel trailer bunkhouse is bound to have plenty of space, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a 29’ bunkhouse is a ripoff.

3. Family-Friendly Layout

Family-friendly travel trailer bunkhouse layouts focus on families. A bunkhouse is great, especially for sleeping arrangements, but the rest of the travel trailer should also be family-friendly.

4. Extra Amenities

The Coachmen Northern Spirit 2963BH is an example of extra amenities, including the kid’s convenience centers in each bunk and the pet center in the kitchen/living space. Extra amenities are always a plus, if not a requirement in many cases.

5. Number and Style of Bathrooms

Things to Look for in a Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse Number an Style of Bathrooms

For larger families, bathrooms jump to a higher tier of importance. One full bathroom is great until you have 8 people running around and three need to use it. Simplicity is fine for small families, but the larger the family, the more a bunkhouse travel trailer with a bath and a half becomes necessary.

6. Cargo Space and Capacity

Most of the travel trailer bunkhouses on this list are great in terms of storage. For those that may seem lacking, keep your eyes peeled for flexibility in different rooms, such as fold-up bunks and pass-through storage options.

All towable travel trailers can add more storage with some creative DIY products and devices. Learn simple tricks to increase your storage capacity in our RV storage hacks article on our sister-site Motorhome FAQs.

7. Maintenance

Nobody wants a travel trailer bunkhouse that requires a high level of maintenance. It’s more about ease of maintenance. How accessible is everything? Can you get to the back of the water heater? How much access do you have to the wiring?

When shopping for your perfect-size RV , also approach it from a repair and maintenance point of view.

Fortunately, there is a wide spectrum in the MSRPs for travel trailer bunkhouse prices. You can push it as low as $20k without sacrificing too much. Even if you decide to go with a used travel trailer bunkhouse, manufacturer warranties are often multi-year.

What Do You Look for in a Travel Trailer Bunkhouse?

Look for the best accommodation for your family and their needs, wants, and preferences. The best thing about travel trailer bunkhouses is the focused design for larger families, with applicable features and amenities.

Since bunkhouse travel trailers are designed for several individuals, bathrooms, storage space, privacy, beds, and lounging areas are critical to match your family size.

Bunkhouses are a space-efficient way to add extra sleeping quarters to your travel trailer, so that you can adventure comfortably with your family or friends.

While most travel trailers have convertible dinettes or hide-a-beds in the sofa, bunkhouses offer dedicated sleeping space so that you don’t have to hassle with transforming the living area for sleeping at night.

If you aren’t familiar with the term ‘bunkhouse’, it is used by camper manufacturers to say that the travel trailer has bunk beds of some kind.

Even if the bunks are not closed off from the camper with a door or in a separate room, they’re considered a bunkhouse.

Some RV brands use the term ‘bunkroom’ if the bunk beds are located in a separate room, and there may be as many as three or four bunk beds, depending on the floor plan.

When choosing a bunkhouse travel trailer under 30 feet, you need to check the following:

The size of the bunks (twin, full or queen)

The total available sleeping capacity

The available living space and compact floorplans

Based on these considerations, the following travel trailers under 30 feet are equipped with bunkhouses or bunk rooms, and might be the perfect choice for your adventures.

Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers Under 30 Ft

Looking for a bunkhouse travel trailer under 30 ft? They're surprisingly spacious, comfortable and best of all they're a great base for road trips.

All adventurers love camping and road trips, and if you have a family it is much better, especially if you have a bunkhouse travel trailer. They come in all sizes, and under 30 ft trailers are quickly becoming the most popular RVs on the market.

Of course, you have to give up on space when compared to the larger bunkhouse trailers, but the best under 30 ft bunkhouse travel trailers offer everything you'd expect from a quality trailer.

Albeit, a little tighter, they still offer privacy, comfort and luxury amenities necessary for you and the children to enjoy your every road trip. They're also cheaper, more economical to run and you will be welcomed into pretty much any RV park across America.

But which under 30 ft bunkhouse travel trailer to get? We have reviewed some of the best ones on the market to help you in your research. As well as offering our opinion on certain trailers, we've also included a guide on what else you should know before buying one.

Bunkhouse travel trailer interior

  • 7 cubic feet refrigerator
  • 1 murphy bed and two bunks
  • 15-inch tires for better support
  • Flip-up solid steps for easier entry
  • Pass through storage to keep things clear inside
  • Sleeps: up to 4 people
  • Length: 21 feet 4 inches
  • Width: 90 inches
  • Weight: 3,210 pounds

This bunkhouse travel trailer has made it to our list with its 3 sleeps. There is a murphy bed along with two bunker beds that cater to the needs of a large family easily. It also has a 7 cubic feet refrigerator in it, which lets you store all the fresh food items. This and the pantry make things quite simple and easy for the vacationers.

Furthermore, there are 3 foldable solid steps that help you get into the trailer easily. In addition to these, there are two pass-through storage spaces at the sides of the trailer . They keep all the necessities in easy reach of users.

What Do I Need to Know Before Buying?

Well, it is no secret that you need to be careful when it comes to buying a bunkhouse. This is why we have jotted down some aspects that will help you make the right purchase.

Number of Bunks

The number of bunks is a primary consideration when you are buying a bunkhouse travel trailer, especially an under 30 ft model. Most of them have two bunkers, which are enough for an average family, but you can choose a three bunker trailer too if you have more people vacationing with you.

The length of these travel trailers is very important because they have to be large enough to fit everything in them. Of course for anything under 30 ft, your trailer is going to be restrictive, so always make sure you are comfortable with the length and space available.

Living Space

The living area space matters a lot, too, when you are buying a travel trailer. This is the place where your family spends the most time, so it should be spacious and comfortable. Also, aim to get as much entertainment accessories as possible.

Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 30 Ft FAQs

Can you find a quality bunkhouse travel trailer under 30 ft.

Well, finding a quality bunkhouse travel trailer under 30 ft. is restrictive, but yes, it is possible to land a deal that offers an amazing  travel trailer at a surprisingly low price. Although smaller, all the above trailers are highly recommended, but of course if you can afford and you need something bigger, you should get a larger travel trailer .

What is the best travel trailer brand?

There are several quality brands that boast quality travel trailers, whether it's larger luxury rigs, or smaller trailers under 30 ft. For a more in depth look, take a look at this article to find out which we believe to be the best.

What is the shortest travel trailer with a bunkhouse?

At 20 ft and 9 in the KZ RV Sportsmen Classic 180BHSE is the shortest bunkhouse travel trailer on the market.

What is the most popular travel trailer length?

The most popular trailer length is between 12 feet and 35 feet. Of course, the shorter it is, the fewer people can comfortable stay in it. A trailer at around 12 ft is designed for solo or couples only, whereas a trailer up to 35 ft. can accommodate at least 4-6 people, depending on the layout.

Is a 30 ft travel trailer too short?

It depends. As you know from the question above the most popular trailers are under 35 ft. And no doubt this is down to cost, but if you go for a travel trailer under 30 ft and there's no more than four of you that travel, it should be more than comfortable.

Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 30 Ft - Small But Spacious

If you're looking for a bunkhouse travel trailer under 30 ft, we're sure you'll build many sweet memories. No doubt, the space can be tight, especially if you max it out with guests. But short trips with a small group and you will have a comfortable base for your road trips.

We recommend all of the above bunkhouse trailers and are sure you'll enjoy any of them. That said, don't let this be your only research. Getting a travel trailer is a big investment, and most people stretch their budgets, so make sure you get exactly what you're comfortable with. After all, you will be spending a lot of time in it.

Happy camping!

Lightest Bunkhouse Travel Trailers with Bathroom

Photo of author

How do you keep the towing simple? Just keep it lightweight when choosing a travel trailer for your family. So, if you are in the market looking for Lightweight Bunkhouse Travel Trailers with good quality, toilet and shower, easy to tow, and room for the whole family … Look no further! Here is our selection of the Lightest Bunkhouse Travel Trailers on the market. This video below is just a sneak peek of some top picks featured in this buyer’s review.

Table of Contents

Why Choose a Lightweight Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

Weight is essential when it comes to travel trailers. Many people sacrifice the luxuries and amenities that come with expensive, giant fifth wheels and motorhomes. Why? Here is a brief explanation of some advantages of the Lightest Bunkhouse Travel Trailers over other RV options.

Better fuel efficiency when compared to heavier trailers because these lightweight campers are designed to be towed by smaller vehicles, including SUVs and crossovers. You will notice when planning a long-distance travel. Additionally, the reduced weight means less fuel consumption, which translates to lower carbon emissions. Therefore, if you’re conscious of your environmental impact, lightweight bunkhouse travel trailers can be a greener choice for families.

Although this is not always the case, the lightest bunkhouse travel trailers’ floor plans are often short campers , making them easy to maneuver and tow by a wide range of cars, jeeps, and SUVs without buying an expensive truck.

The lightest bunkhouse travel trailers are easy to drive and park even in tight spaces when you take them to an RV park. Also, they are easier to set up once you reach your destination , so you can start enjoying your camping trip sooner.

Moreover, their small size makes them easy to store in any garage or backyard without paying monthly storage fees , reducing the associated monthly maintenance costs.

Compared to other types of campers that quickly devalue their investment value, such as pop-up campers, a bunkhouse travel trailer maintains its resale value , being a good investment that is also easy to keep at a specific budget due to the wide range of options available on the market.

Just because a trailer is lightweight doesn’t mean it can’t have all the amenities you need for a comfortable camping trip and luxury amenities. I would recommend having a clear list of the features you want for your bunkhouse travel trailer before looking for a purchase. Otherwise, it can be overwhelming. The lightest bunkhouse travel trailers can range in price from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands. Make sure you choose a trailer that fits your budget.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are an excellent choice for families because they offer plenty of space for everyone to sleep comfortably. The bunk beds save space and are especially popular with kids. Additionally, bunk beds provide a space to separate activities between adults and kids, giving each one the space needed to enjoy the travel.

The lightest bunkhouse travel trailers are an excellent choice for families who want to balance the best of both worlds: space, freedom, and ease of use.

Is an RV with Two Bathrooms Your Dream RV?

travel trailer bunkhouse trailers

RV manufacturers pack many living features into a small space, which is why a second bathroom is such a luxury. However, it’s worth the effort to find a model with an extra restroom for several reasons.

First, an RV with two bathrooms offers more privacy. If you’re a parent, you’ve probably had the experience of being in the shower and hearing the familiar knocks of kids outside yelling your name:  “Mom, Mom, MOM!!” or “Dad, Dad, DAD!!” A second bathroom gives the kids (and other family members) their own space. No more sharing!

Some RVs with two bathrooms have separate holding tanks for each, which may give you more tank space. Plus, you won’t have as tight of a schedule for evening or morning showers. Both of these benefits are especially helpful if you have a large family or overnight guests.

RVs with two bathrooms are also nice for entertaining. You might know the familiar feeling of worrying about whether the bathroom is clean enough for company. Having a guest bath means you can keep one nice and clean for guests while putting the other through its paces.

If you own an RV, do you give uninitiated guests a “How to Use an RV Toilet” tutorial when they visit? Let us know in the comments below.

Our Picks for the Best RV with 2 Bathrooms

Now that you know why a second bathroom is such a big benefit, let’s look at the floorplans and features in eight RVs with two bathrooms:

Jayco North Point 382FLRB

Jayco North Point 382FLRB floorplan is one of the best RV with two bathrooms

Specs

  • Length: 43’10”
  • Dry Weight: 15,135 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8
  • Bedrooms: 1 primary
  • Bathrooms: 1 full, 1 half

Favorite Feature: Massive L-shaped vanity in the full bathroom

The North Point 382FLRB is made for entertaining family and friends. Step upstairs to the front living room, which has enough seating for the whole crew, including two tri-fold sofas and theater seating wrapped around a 50-inch television and electric fireplace.

The primary suite just might be the star of the show. It features a king bed and a cozy window bench. The large luxurious bathroom offers an L-shaped vanity with dual sinks, as well as a roomy walk-in shower with a teak seat. Upgrade to a Truma on-demand water heater for long, hot showers.

The second bathroom is a half bath, easily accessible by guests in the central living and kitchen area. The residential kitchen offers all the conveniences of a home.

Forest River Arctic Wolf 3910SUITE

  • Length: 43’6”
  • Dry Weight: 14,110 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6

Favorite Feature: Abundant seating in the front living room

Like the Jayco North Point, the Arctic Wolf 3910SUITE features a front living room with two tri-fold sofas and theater seating. Only a half wall separates it from the kitchen below, helping the family chef stay connected to the gathering space.

Speaking of the family chef, the well-appointed kitchen has room for a coffee bar and a massive floor-to-ceiling tower of cabinets. The “blackout” package on the appliances and cabinetry adds a modern touch. A nearby half bath is handy for guests.

Head to the rear bedroom to find a relaxing retreat with a king-size bed and ample storage. The full bathroom features dual sinks, which many couples will appreciate.

The Expert: Over the past decade I’ve reviewed portable generators, power stations and other gear for publications like Popular Mechanics , Popular Science , The Daily Beast , Thrillist and more. Not only have I spent over 30 years camping in RVs, but I’ve used just about every type of portable generator in a variety of vehicles, including RVs and converted vans.

Looking for more backup power solutions? Here are our review of the best portable generators , the best solar-powered generators , and the best home generators .

What to Consider in an RV Generator

How to tell if a generator is rv-ready.

Brands don’t make official, task-specific “RV generators,” but there are a couple of specific features they should have to make sense in that role. Most RVs feature a 30-amp (A) outlet, which enables you to power your entire RV, charging its batteries while running everything from lights to the air conditioner. If your generator doesn’t have a matching 30-amp plug, then it isn’t really the right tool for this job.

Generator size also matters: Ideally, it should be large enough to power your RV for a couple days, but also needs to be light enough to move around and compact enough to fit inside, either through the door or into an exterior cargo hold if you have one. It definitely helps to figure out where you plan to store your generator ahead of time and measure that space so you know what will and won’t work for your setup.

Wattage and Capacity

Size matters–in watts (W), that is. While RV setup is different, we’d generally suggest that most RVs need at least 2,000 watts at any given time, which is enough to power an air conditioner, fridge, lights, and a few devices. Campers should be comfortable at the low end of the spectrum: With 2,000 watts, you’ll have to be careful about using your a/c and making sure to unplug appliances when they aren’t in use, but that shouldn’t be a problem if you plan to spend most of your time outside. If you’re spending a fair amount of time inside and plan to use your a/c often, you should look for a larger generator that can put out upwards of 3,500 watts.

If you’re using a solar generator , you also need to consider your generator’s capacity, or its ability to store energy that’s been harnessed by a solar panel . To power an RV, you should look for a generator that can store at least 3,000 watt-hours (Wh), which is enough to power a fridge, lights, devices, and small appliances for a couple of days. And it needs to have an output of at least 2,000 watts, which allows it to power said essentials simultaneously. Keep in mind that solar generators generally cannot generate as much juice as gas or electricity: Unless you have an extraordinary solar panel array and perfect sun to keep the power flowing, you probably won’t be able to power a full suite of appliances on solar alone.

Most RV generators run on gasoline. There are also dual-fuel generators that use gas or propane: Generators tend to run more quietly when using propane, so it’s a useful option when you set up in a crowded area.

Solar generators are an increasingly popular and attractive option, as well. While it takes time to fully charge a generator via solar panels, they are more sustainable and work well if you’re camping off-grid. Worst case, you can plug them into a house or building power to charge them quickly.

It is never safe to run a gas or propane generator inside your RV. Likewise, do not attempt to fill the gas tank while it’s running, which could start a fire. Solar generators are safe to use indoors.

Portability

There’s no “set it and forget it” RV generator: You will need to move it around fairly often, so it needs light enough for 1-2 people to carry in and out. In general, lighter is better here, but I’d generally look for one around 40-50 pounds for a 2,000-watt generator, or 50-100 pounds for 3,000-4,000 watts. Some generators feature built-in wheels and handles, which can make life a lot easier when you need to move them around.

An oft-overlooked cousin of portability is volume, because you don’t want to be the camper who brings excessive noise pollution to a campground where everyone’s looking to enjoy the great outdoors. Smaller, more portable generators will generally generate less noise. Keep in mind, though, that some manufacturers make their generators lighter by shedding insulation that keeps them quiet. In the end, it’s up to you to find a balance between the two.

In addition to the standard 30-amp/120-volt outlet that you want to properly hook up your RV, the best RV generators will have a variety of plugs that will allow you to power or charge other devices directly. We usually look for standard AC outlets, like you’d find at home, which come in handy for plugging in power tools, outdoor appliances, or whatever else. Many generators also come with USB-A and USB-C ports to charge laptops, phones and other tech.

If you plan on running everything off your RV, port variety may not be as important. But it’s a very nice value add if you plan to use the generator away from your RV.

Since you have to lug your generator in and out of your RV, it needs to be durable enough to take a few bumps here and there. Plus, you want it to last as long as possible without needing repairs. It’s hard to gauge durability on spec, but certain brands have reputations for strong build quality and sturdy construction. Even then, it always pays to look at user reviews and find out if your pick has a reputation for holding up over time.

How We Selected The Best RV Generators

I’ve used RV generators in all shapes and sizes for decades, and have been rigorously testing new models from both top manufacturers and up-and-coming startups for the past five years: My selections are the result of all that experience. To supplement my experience, I compared my findings against a variety of expert reviews and those from real-world buyers at retailers like Amazon.

The recommendations below span a range of price points, portability and operating specs, and situational needs, and after much testing and consideration I can assert with confidence that they are truly the best RV generators you can buy right now.

Champion Power Equipment 4500W Wireless Start Inverter Generator

4500W Wireless Start Inverter Generator

This rock-solid block of generator excellence from Champion is about as perfect for RVing as it gets. Its 4,500-watt output is more than enough to run your entire RV, air conditioner included. At the same time, it’s surprisingly quiet, clocking in at just 61 decibels—about the same volume as a dishwasher.

The build quality is also outstanding, offering the kind of durability you want for many years of outdoor use. While it’s definitely heavy, it's fairly compact—about the size of a couple of car batteries—and an integrated handle and wheels make it fairly easy to move around.

Champion has a whole line of inverter generators, some of which are less expensive: I’m recommending this one because it features a remote starter, which I really appreciate when I don’t feel like messing around with a generator in the cold or dark.

Genkins GK2300i Portable Inverter Generator

GK2300i Portable Inverter Generator

This Genkins generator offers a surprising amount of functionality at a very low price. Its 2,300-watt output should be adequate for most, it’s extremely lightweight and portable, and its 53-58 decibel range is quiet as can be. The company didn’t skimp on safety features, as is sometimes the case with other lower-cost generators, so you can run it with peace of mind. It even offers a little luxury, in the form of a couple of USB-A ports.

The plastic casing doesn’t feel as substantial as pricier models, but that’s to be expected at such a bargain price. If you’re looking for a budget generator that will get the job done, this is hard to beat.

Jackery Solar Generator 3000 Pro

Solar Generator 3000 Pro

Solar generators come in all shapes and sizes these days, but I think the Jackery 3000 Pro is the best option for RV-owners, since it offers a lot of capacity without completely sacrificing mobility. What’s more, I’ve knocked one around more than a good bit and have been impressed with its durability. It’s my go-to when I’m road-tripping someplace like Moab, Utah, where sunshine is plentiful and I need a fairly portable setup.

While there are larger capacity options out there, including the EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra below, the 3000 Pro’s 3,000-watt/3,024-watt-hour performance should keep most RVs going for a couple of days, and it recharges fast assuming you have the right solar panels. If you’re new to solar, the bundle we recommend (and link to above) includes two of Jackery’s excellent 200-watt SolarSaga panels, which are more than capable of keeping you powered up.

While its near-100-pound weight isn’t exactly light, the burly integrated wheels and retractable handle make it easy to move around. There’s even an app that allows you to monitor its power levels and output from your phone. What’s more, I’ve knocked one around more than a good bit and have been impressed with its durability. For most on-the-go solar goals, this will deliver.

Pulsar GD400BN 4000W Super-Quiet Dual-Fuel Inverter Generator

GD400BN 4000W Super-Quiet Dual-Fuel Inverter Generator

Dual-fuel generators are very nice to have on an RV, because the two types work well in different scenarios: Running gas is easy to obtain just about everywhere you go, which makes it great for long, isolated trips or living off-grid, but makes a lot of noise. While propane isn’t quite as accessible, using it allows your generator to run more quietly. With two complementary modes, generators like the Pulsar GD400BN give you the ability to customize your generator’s performance to match your needs in the moment.

We like the GD400BN specifically because it's powerful, quiet and portable. With its 4,000-watt output, it’s more than capable of powering your entire rig, with the air conditioner, but it’s built solid and weighs less than 50 pounds. Another plug or two would’ve been nice–its single AC outlet limits things a bit if you have any reason to plug in power tools or equipment. For all intents and purposes, this is a very nice dual-fuel generator, and comes at a decent price to boot.

Honda EU2200i 2200W Portable Generator

EU2200i 2200W Portable Generator

At this point, the Honda EU2200i is nothing short of a campsite icon. You see them all the time at campsites, and with good reason: They are renowned for doing pretty much everything right.

Weighing in at just over 46 pounds and not much larger than a couple of stacked shoeboxes, this is about as portable as RV-capable generators get. It’s also one of the quietest options in its class, purring along at 47-58 decibels, or about the same volume as a normal conversation. Popular Mechanics Test Editor Brad Ford found the same thing in his testing, calling the EU2200i “remarkably quiet.”

“The EU2200i is ideal for camping and other outdoor events where generator noise might be frowned on,” he wrote in our guide to the best portable generators .

And its durability is outright famous: I have personally spent years on end bumping and bashing one all over the place and it just won’t break.

The primary downside is its 2,200-watt outage, which makes sense for its size but is relatively small if you’re powering an RV. Still, given how often you see it around, RVers are clearly okay working around its limitations.

EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra

Delta Pro Ultra

I can report from firsthand experience that theEcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra is an absolute performance monster, with massive output (7,500 watts) and enormous capacity (6,500 watt-hours), which you can expand further by adding extra 6,000-watt-hour batteries . I recently had one along for a cloudy camping trip where solar panels would have been useless, but it didn’t matter because its charge lasted a solid three days (though it was cool weather and I wasn’t using my a/c—for that you’ll need solar). It also charges very quickly: I charged mine via a wall outlet in about 2 hours. I could easily use this generator to back up my entire house so, needless to say, it can store and produce enough energy to handily power an a/c and everything else you may need in your RV—particularly with a good solar setup.

The downside to carrying a generator like this around—more capacity means more weight. At just over 180 pounds, it’s too heavy to move in or out of an RV solo. It’s more portable than you might think, though: You can remove the batteries from the generator, then carry it out in more manageable parts. Plus, the power station has wheels to help you move it around. Ultimately, the Delta Pro Ultra is probably overkill for most RVers, but it pushes the boundaries on what you can expect from an RV-compatible generator.

Bluetti AC200L Portable Power Station

AC200L Portable Power Station

Bluetti has a penchant for putting lots of performance into sturdy, outdoor-tough packages, and the new AC200L “yes ands” that by adding a ton of outlet options. Its 2,400-watt output is plenty for most RVs, and its 2,048-watt-hour capacity is decent if modest, but is expandable up to 8,192-watt-hour using the company’s stackable add-on batteries.

As for outlets, it’s got plenty of AC, DC, and USB ports. I tend to pack along a lot of cameras, drones, and other gadgets, and I’ve found that this generator is ideal for keeping everything charged in addition to offering all the core ports I need for the RV. Its compact portability and port-abundance also make it perfect for moving throughout camp whenever I need to power something outdoors. It charges extremely fast, going from 0-to-100 percent in about an hour when plugged into a wall socket or as fast as 2 hours with the right solar setup.

It’s a bit heavy for its modest size, but I love the AC200L’s outstanding durability. I brought one along to juice up e-bikes on a recent mountain biking trip. Gear tends to get used pretty hard at the trailhead, but this generator took it like a champ.

Westinghouse 4,500W Generator

4,500W Generator

If you want to be a good neighbor at your campsite, this generator from Westinghouse keeps the rumble to a minimum. Thanks to a special throttling system that only produces as much power as needed, it spins down when you aren’t drawing much rather than constantly roaring at full speed. That keeps the volume down, dropping to a decibel level akin to generators half its size at low usage. I’ve used older versions of what were essentially the same model; they were very quiet then, and reviews indicate the volume has gone down even more.

Its hefty 4,500-watt output is substantial, considering the lack of racket, and capable of powering an entire RV without issue. It also has a remote starter, which allows me to fire it up from the comfort of indoors.

This Westinghouse is fairly heavy, though a retractable handle, wheels, and lifting handles make it easier to move around. And its relatively compact shape passes through an RV door without too much trouble. All in all it provides ample power while keeping the noise to a minimum.

Q+A WIth Our Experts

line break

How long can I continuously run my RV generator?

Portable gas generators can typically run anywhere from 6-18 hours depending on their fuel capacity. When properly well-maintained, you should be able to run it until the tank runs dry, fill it back up, then start all over.

Remember: You should never attempt to refill the gas tank while the generator is running, which can lead to fires.

Where should I put my generator when I set it up outside?

You can keep it pretty close: Various experts recommend anywhere from 5-25 feet, but I’ve found that 5-10 feet is about right.

If you use a gas or propane generator, your primary concern is to keep the generator clear of doors and windows, as you don’t want to run the risk of carbon monoxide blowing into the RV. You also shouldn’t push up against a wall or other gear–keep well-ventilated on all sides.

Solar generators don’t have this issue, set it up wherever you need to for the best solar panel placement.

Can I run an RV generator in the rain?

You can but you shouldn’t. Electricity and water don’t mix, and running a generator in the rain can have unpredictable results. At best, it may fry the generator or your RV electrical system. At worst it could cause a fire or electrocute someone.

travel trailer bunkhouse trailers

This company made a Cybertruck-inspired travel trailer that could run off-grid forever

F ew things get the current zeitgeist talking like Elon Musk’s Tesla Cybertruck and anything even tangentially related to it. Now, specialty luxury RV manufacturer Living Vehicle wants to add to the hysteria conversation with news of a revolutionary concept travel trailer that’s unlike anything on the market. The bleeding-edge CyberTrailer is purpose-built to pair with the Tesla Cybertruck and allow campers to untether from the grid forever.

Get the details on Living Vehicle’s Tesla Cybertruck-inspired CyberTrailer

With few official details beyond a dozen high-level bullet points on the company’s website , Living Vehicle is doing its best to get RV enthusiasts talking by imagining what the future CyberTrailer could be. At first glance, the ultra-modern RV’s roots are clear. The asymmetrical silhouette and sharp, angular aesthetic are unmistakably ripped straight from the Cybertruck’s original design sketches. It’s sleek, muscular, and a clear departure from, well, every other travel trailer on the road.

But, beyond the next-gen design, what sets the CyberTrailer apart is its serious off-grid capability. According to Living Vehicle, buyers can “say goodbye to RV parks forever” with “freedom from utility connections.” In practical terms, it’s built to be 100% solar-powered, thanks to roof-mounted panels and a second, horseshoe-shaped array of panels that wrap around the sides and rear. In theory, this could provide enough juice to run all of the trailer’s onboard tech components and appliances indefinitely wherever you can find abundant sunshine. According to LV, the solar setup will be beefy enough to power almost any electric tow vehicle, whether that’s a Cybertruck, a Rivian, or a Ford F150 Lightning . The company confirms the CyberTrailer will play nice with traditional gas and diesel-powered vehicles too.

Even cooler, though, is the promise of “unlimited water from air creation & recycling.” In simplest terms, this should work like a high-capacity dehumidifier, drawing moisture from the ambient air, filtering it, and converting it to clean, potable water that fills the trailer’s freshwater tank. In theory, it could do this indefinitely or for as long as the trailer has the power to run the recycling system.

As for additional amenities and conveniences, we anticipate the CyberTrailer being as luxurious and high-tech as Living Vehicle’s current production model travel trailers , including the HD24 and HD30. Marine-grade construction, residential fixtures, high-end RV (or full-size) appliances, and tech-forward everything are all but guaranteed. Among the few official details, the company confirms complete wireless control via Apple iPad and even a folding patio and gear hauler ramp.

Reserve your own Cybertruck-inspired RV/travel trailer

The latest details for purchasing your own CyberTrailer are thin. Officially, Living Vehicle claims a starting price of $175,000, and deliveries are expected to start in 2025. A fully refundable $100 deposit puts your name on the waitlist. Given the vagueness surrounding this prototype, though, we’re a bit skeptical as to whether or not this is just a Cybertruck-related PR stunt . Either way, it’s guaranteed to get people talking.

Victims of North Texas tornado share their stories of surviving in an RV park

By Steven Rosenbaum

May 26, 2024 / 9:57 AM CDT / CBS Texas

The tornado that killed at least seven people in North Texas Saturday night was part of a cell that traveled for 100 miles. South of Valley View where at least five people died, the storm destroyed multiple homes at the RV park at the Ray Roberts marina.

Despite a debris field of more than a half-mile long, all of the residents there survived.

On Sunday morning, CBS News Texas reporter Dawn White spoke with Frank Soltysiak and Donald Wylie, two men who live at the RV park. Here is a lightly edited transcript of their conversation:

frank-soltysiak.jpg

White: What was it like last night when the tornado touched down on where you were?

Soltysiak: I was in a walk-in cooler at the restaurant here at the marina. The owner came around, honking his horn, warning everybody to get out. I don't know why I heeded that warning. Glad I did. I grabbed my dog, we headed for there and … it was just unbelievable, the sound of all the destruction going on around us. That walk-in cooler didn't move. That was the most secure structure you could have gone to. And I come out, and everything is destroyed. Just absolutely destroyed. And in a matter of two minutes, it's gone, everything is gone. But I got my dog, and I got me.

White: You said you sold your house and you actually moved here to live.

Soltysiak: Yeah, I live here. I kind of got tired of the taxes and the high insurance, so I've been here since December. And this happens. I guess God doesn't like RV parks. [laughs]

White: That was your RV right back there.

soltysiak-damage.jpg

Soltysiak: That's it. It's gone. It's all gone. I'm finding a lot of my stuff all in the debris field, you know? I'm finding my Red Bulls out here ... My Irish whisky survived. [laughs]

White: Well, we're glad that you and your 20-year-old Maltese are OK.

Soltysiak: Yeah, Sampson and I, we're alive. I got the clothes on my back and a leash for him. And I was able to get some of his blankets ... and we slept in my car. The car is destroyed also. It must have picked up my car and just spun it, because the whole back end of it is all twisted up, and it's a big Lincoln, and it's all twisted up.

White: Donald, if you can tell me what you saw and heard.

donald-wylie.jpg

Wylie: I was in my camper and I heard the noise, a really loud noise coming. I heard the horn honking. I rolled in my bedroom ... As soon as I did, I went ahead and laid on the bed because … I felt the walls starting to vibrate. At that point, it picked up my whole camper over the pickup and sailed it and spun … and then it slammed into another camper, and it exploded. And how I survived, I have no idea.

White: What went through your mind when this all was happening?

Wylie: Just… it's hard to describe. But the best thing I can say is I wasn't upset, or I was just trying to get some place safe, and there was no place to go. Hang on for the ride. So that's all I can do. And just glad to be here. I've lived through some tough times in the last five years, I just keep picking up the pieces and moving forward.
