In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Indonesia in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Indonesia.

If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Indonesian – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Indonesia.

Best SIM Cards In Indonesia

If you’re traveling in Indonesia, we recommend using a SIM card from Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Smartfren, or Airalo.

I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia, you might want to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Indonesia For Tourists

You can buy an Indonesia prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asia prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s look at the mobile data plans offered in Indonesia by Telkomsel, XL Axiata, and Smartfren.

Telkomsel Tourist SIM Card

Telkomsel offers a prepaid tourist plan:

• 25 GB data, one month for IDR 150,000 ($9.66)

XL Axiata Tourist SIM Card

XL Axiata has two different prepaid plans available:

• 15 GB data, 30 days for IDR 41,736 ($2.69)
• 20 GB data, 30 days for IDR 88,946 ($5.73)

As you can see, it is a cheaper option than Telkomsel.

Smarfren Tourist SIM Card

Smartfren offers several SIM-only plans for tourists:

• 6 GB, 30 days, IDR 30,000 ($1.93)
• 12 GB, 30 days, IDR 45,000 ($2.90)
• 30 GB, 30 days, IDR 70,000 ($4.83)
• 45 GB, 30 days, IDR 100,000 ($6.44)
• 60 GB, 30 days, IDR 125,000 ($8.05)

Overall, we think Smartfren is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any mobile carrier would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy An Indonesia Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Prepaid Asia-Pacific SIM Card works in more than 17 countries and gives you unlimited data for 14 days. Indonesia is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone.

• Order online before you fly : get your SIM card delivered to you before your trip. So, when you land, you’re already connected and can post those “ I’m in paradise! ” pics. 
• Grab one when you land : If you’re the type who likes to roll with the punches and grab things on the fly, this option is for you. Just land, grab a SIM card (from the airport or a local store) and you’re good to go.

Purchase at online stores before you travel

Once you land in Indonesia, insert the SIM into your phone and if prompted, enter the PIN provided with the SIM card packaging, or follow any activation instructions that might come with it. That’s it—you’re online!

I have a question, I’m arriving about midnight in Jakarta Airport this weekend. I’d like to buy a sim there. The sim cards shops are open 24/7?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t open for 24 hours. Most SIM card providers have stalls in big shopping malls in Jakarta. It’s cheaper to purchase SIM cards outside the airport. Small minimarkets like Indomaret, and Alfamart also sells SIM card and internet credit. However, you might want to ask for assistance to activate the sim card.

You have to register your phone prior to arriving in Indonesia. I just found this out the hard way. I am blocked from phoning outside the country. I completed the IMEI form, now I have to go back to the airport and find a customs agent to complete the registration. You could purchase a SIM card in a minimarket like Indomaret or Alfamart. There are several providers to choose from. Another option is going to a small kiosk counter and purchasing it there. The seller will help with the registration thing.

To keep the mobile number active, and extend the validity is by top-up/adding credit. Otherwise, the mobile number will get into the grace period. And in the grace period, there is only a short period of time to reactivate it by visiting the provider’s office.

Once the mobile number passes the grace period, it can no longer be used or reactivated. The provider will recycle the number and resell it again.

Is there a way to register a SIM that will be valid for more than 90 days?

Hi Kedeb, If you use Simpati by Telkomsel, you can activate the roaming package through their app Mytelkomsel. Click “buy package”, then click roaming and choose roaming country destination and duration. The price starts from Rp150.000. It depends on the duration, country, and the data quota. Make sure your SIM Card has enough balance. For IM3 you can download their app MYIM3 and for XL, you can search MyXL in the Appstore/Playstore. And activate roaming packages through their app.

Let me start with giving you my eSIM recommendation for Indonesia. These are my favorite eSIMs for traveling to Indonesia in 2024.

1. Jetpac eSIM for Indonesia  - $28 USD

• 20 GB data-only eSIM
• Valid in Indonesia only
• Operates on the Telkomsel network
• Valid for 30 days
• Only $1.4 USD per Gigabyte

Jetpac has the best value eSIMs for Indonesia. Jetpac has 8 different eSIM plans and very important is that they operate on the Telkomsel network, by far the best mobile data network in Indonesia.

2. SimOptions eSIM for Indonesia  - $16.40

• 10 GB data-only eSIM
• $1.64 USD per Gigabyte

A good second best is a SimOptions eSIM for Indonesia. They are slightly more expensive but Traveltomtom has in general always very good experiences with SimOptions.

Big plus about SimOptions eSIMs for Indonesia is that they are 5G ready. However, SimOptions does not specify which network they use in Indonesia.

Both eSIMs are data-only eSIMs and incoming and outgoing calls or sms are not supported. Data is only valid in Indonesia. 

Is Indonesia one of your stops on a trip to Asia then you can also look into getting an eSIM for traveling in Asia . There are eSIMs that cover all countries in South East Asia and some even pretty much all of of Asia and Middle East.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an eSIM for Indonesia or in general before using an eSIM. 

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. eSIMs only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or eSIM to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

eSIM compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: eSIMs only work if your smartphone supports eSIMs, also called eSIM compatible. All newer smartphones support eSIMs. If you are not sure if your phone is eSIM compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is eSIM compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT eSIM compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an eSIM for traveling to Indonesia.

Comparison of the best eSIMs for Indonesia

Buying an eSIM on arrival in Indonesia is now also possible. As per September 2024 Telkomsel, Three, IM3 and Smartfren provide eSIMs for tourists as well as physical prepaid sim cards at the international airports of Bali and Jakarta as well as in their official phone stores across Indonesia.

There are also multiple eSIM providers on the internet that sell eSIMs for Indonesia. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an eSIM for traveling in Indonesia from one of the well-known eSIM providers like Airalo, Jetpac , SimOptions , Nomad, Holafly, Sim Local , Roamless , etc. that have proven to be reliable operators.

SimOptions and Airalo have been long time favorites of Traveltomtom, but are they still the best and cheapest? There are multiple new eSIM providers nowadays and the competition is fierce...

So before you buy an eSIM first read all my tips below!

SimOptions is the only sim card provider that also offers international prepaid sim cards for Indonesia . These are pre-activated physical prepaid sim cards and will be delivered to your home address before your trip to Indonesia and it is plug and play when you arrive in Indonesia.

Airalo, Jetpac, Sim Local, Roamless, Holafly and Nomad only sell eSIMs for Indonesia.

Jetpac is a Singapore based eSIM provider so they know the market of eSIMs in Indonesia very well. Perhaps that is why they are able to offer the best value eSIMs for Indonesia in 2024.

Jetpac has also  eSIM for traveling to Southeast Asia  that are valid in 15 countries in Asia/Pacific.

You can instal your Jetpac eSIM before your trip to Indonesia, but it only activates from the moment it connects to a supported network in Indonesia or one of the other supported countries. That moment your days also start counting. The Jetpac eSIMs have to be installed within 1 year.

An extra advantage of Jetpac eSIMs is that they provide a free VPN subscription as well as free lounge access if your flight is delayed. Airalo is another very reputable eSIM provider that is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering your eSIM for Indonesia through Airalo is done fast and easy

Why using Airalo? Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and often some of the cheapest eSIM deals. 

Airalo is the market leader in eSIMs but is not much innovative in the last years. Where other eSIM operators constantly enhance their product and prices, Airalo stays a bit behind.

The Airalo eSIMs for Indonesia are from Indotel and operate on the 4G/LTE/5G network of Indosat and Three. The Airalo Indotel eSIMs for Indonesia are now 5G ready. Side note, there isn't much 5G yet in Indonesia as of 2024.

In pretty much all the amazing places to visit in Indonesia you will find a good 4G/LTE signal and the data speed is pretty ok these days.

Unfortunately the Airalo eSIMs do not operate on the Telkomsel network, the best mobile data network in Indonesia. A reason for me not to recommend Airalo as the best eSIM for Indonesia.

All the Airalo eSIMs are data-only sim cards without a phone number, so any phone/sms service is NOT supported. An Airalo eSIM has to be installed within 1 month and after activation the credit validity starts when it connects the first time to a supported network. For more info check out the Airalo website .

Nomad has eSIMs for Indonesia that operate on the Telkomsel network, the provider with the best mobile data network coverage all across Indonesia.

The Traveltomtom Team has reported some issues with Nomad eSIMs lately and therefore Nomad is not Traveltomtom's first recommendation when looking for eSIMs for Indonesia.

Here are the Nomad eSIM plans for Indonesia:

The best value Nomad eSIM plan give you 20 GB for $39 USD which is $1.95 USD per Gigabyte.

Nomad Indonesia plans are slightly cheaper than Airalo, but more expensive than Jetpac and SimOptions.

The Nomad Indonesia eSIMs have to be installed on your phone within 60 days and after installation its validity starts when it connects for the first time to a supported network in Indonesia. Basically when the plane lands. For more info check the Nomad website .

Holafly is another well-known eSIM provider but unlike other providers they work with eSIMs with unlimited data. However, there is a catch and that is a so-called FUP (Fair Use Policy). More about it later, but it could mean that you suddenly have a very slow data connection for a whole day until it resets.

Here are the Holafly eSIM plans for Indonesia with unlimited data per day:

• 1 day 'unlimited' data = $6 USD
• 2 days 'unlimited' data = $10 USD
• 3 days 'unlimited' data = $13 USD
• 4 days 'unlimited' data = $16 USD
• 5 days 'unlimited' data = $21 USD
• 6 days 'unlimited' data = $25 USD
• 7 days 'unlimited' data = $29 USD
• 8 days 'unlimited' data = $31 USD
• 9 days 'unlimited' data = $35 USD
• 10 days 'unlimited' data = $37 USD
• 11 days 'unlimited' data = $40 USD
• 14 days 'unlimited' data = $48 USD
• 20 days 'unlimited' data = $64 USD
• 30 days 'unlimited' data = $75 USD

As you can see the Holafly eSIMs for traveling to Indonesia are much more expensive than other eSIMs.

The Holafly eSIMs for Indonesia are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls/sms are NOT supported. These eSIMs do also not come with a phone number. The Holafly eSIMs operate on the 4G/LTE/5G network of XL Axiata, Indosat and Telkomsel.

You can use a hotspot on the Holafly eSIMs for Indonesia, but it is capped at 500 MB per day.

Why not truly unlimited, but 'unlimited'? Because there is a Fair Use Policy and Traveltomtom has had bad experiences with this in the past. Suddenly your data speed is slowed down for 24 hours because you apparently used too much data. More info in my section about: 'eSIMs with unlimited data'.

Imagine being on a 10 hour bus ride and after 2 hour you get a message from your eSIM provider telling you that your data speed is slowed down for the next 24 hours.

If I hate something then it is slow data speed. Therefore Traveltomtom's is not a fan of eSIMs with 'unlimited' data and therefore it is not my first recommendation when looking for an eSIM for Indonesia.

Also, Traveltomtom tested Holafly in another country and was very disappointed with the overall performance. Holafly was using the weakest mobile data network in that country and people all around me constantly had connection but I was pretty much offline for a whole week. Even though we were in big cities, I constantly had to ask for the public WiFi of my hotels, restaurants and bars because my Holafly eSIM was super slow.

As of September 2024 most of the mobile internet providers in Indonesia now also offer eSIMs for tourists.

You will see that these local prepaid sim card in the form of an eSIM are cheaper than the eSIMs for Indonesia that you buy on the internet. But keep in mind that these eSIMs can only be bought on arrival in Indonesia in an official phone store or at Bali Airport  or Jakarta Airport .

These eSIMs come with a phone number from Indonesia that starts with +62. Incoming calls are supported and outgoing calls can be made after adding extra calling credit to your local eSIM.

Here are the Telkomsel prepaid eSIM plans:

• 25 GB data for 30 days = 400K IDR - $26 USD
• 35 GB data for 30 days = 500K IDR - $32.5 USD
• 60 GB data for 30 days = 600K IDR - $39 USD
• 100 GB data for 30 days = 850K IDR - $55 USD
• 200 GB data for 30 days = 1,250K IDR - $81 USD

IM3 - Indosat/Ooredoo

IM3 is a prepaid sim card brand from the merger of Indosat/Ooredoo and Three/Tri Indonesia.

Here are the eSIM plans from IM3:

• 18 GB data for 30 days = 250K IDR - $16 USD
• 42 GB data for 30 days = 400K IDR - $26 USD
• 64 GB data for 30 days = 450K IDR - $29 USD
• 80 GB data for 30 days = 550K IDR - $36 USD
• 170 GB data for 30 days = 750K IDR - $49 USD

On top of IM3, Three also has its own prepaid sim cards:

• 29 GB data for 30 days = 250K IDR - $16 USD
• 45 GB data for 30 days = 350K IDR - $23 USD
• 65 GB data for 30 days = 450K IDR - $29 USD

After Telkomsel, Indosat/Ooredoo and XL Axiata, Smartfren is the smallest mobile internet provider in Indonesia. 

Smartfren offers the following eSIM plans: 

• 25 GB data for 30 days = 200K IDR - $13 USD
• 30 GB data for 30 days = 230K IDR  - $15 USD
• 45 GB data for 30 days = 275K IDR  - $18 USD
• 60 GB data for 30 days = 500K IDR - $32.5 USD

XL Axiata is another mobile internet provider in Indonesia but they do NOT sell eSIMs for tourists, only physical prepaid sim cards.

Why did Traveltomtom already used more than 100s of eSIMs? I told you before that I travel full time and I am on the road constantly. Pretty much every week I need another sim card to stay connected.

What is the cheapest eSIM for Indonesia?

No eSIM provider can beat the Jetpac  eSIM deals for just $1 USD. You get 1 GB data valid for 4 days.

Airalo  has another cheap eSIM for Indonesia. For $5.5 USD you get 1 GB data valid for 7 days. This eSIM is only valid in Indonesia and does not support calling and texting.

Why ordering an eSIM for traveling in Indonesia

eSIMs are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes. 

The most important reason to get an eSIM is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to Indonesia without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless.

One of the best things about arriving in Indonesia with an activated eSIM is that you are online as soon as the plane lands. More about when to instal your eSIM later. 

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to Indonesia so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don't want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

eSIMs are the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

Overseas Data Roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed. Do you have the patience to handle 3G? It is frustrating when all around you at pretty much every amazing tourist destinations in Indonesia there is 4G/LTE available.

Uncountable times (mostly American) travel friends have asked me: "can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!". Trust me, get yourself an eSIM or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Indonesia. Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

Where to buy an eSIM for Indonesia?

There are heaps of eSIM providers for Indonesia. Traveltomtom compared multiple eSIM providers and concluded that the above mentioned ones ( Jetpac ,  SimOptions , Holafly,  Airalo and Nomad ) are the most reliable eSIM providers for traveling to Indonesia in 2024. 

When buying an eSIM for Indonesia through one of the above recommended eSIM providers you only need your email address and the eSIM is instantly ready to use after installation. There is no ID registration needed. 

On arrival in Indonesia

There are 5 main mobile internet provider in Indonesia: Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Indosat/Ooredoo (IM3), Three/Tri and Smartfren. As of September 2024 all the mobile internet providers in Indonesia, apart from XL Axiata, sell eSIMs for tourists.

When you arrive in Indonesia and you want to buy a local sim card for tourists you can choose to get an eSIM installed on your phone or get a physical prepaid sim card.

Flying into Indonesia and landing in Jakarta or Bali then you can buy a tourist sim card for Indonesia on arrival at the airport.

When to order/activate an eSIM for Indonesia?

You can order an eSIM for Indonesia pretty much any time you want. Most eSIMs have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the eSIM. The validity of some eSIMs start straight after the installation, other eSIMs only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your eSIM on the day of departure to Indonesia or before. You will need an internet connection to instal your eSIM. The international airports in Indonesia have free public WiFi so you could use that to install your eSIM, but I would not rely on it. Therefore Traveltomtom advices you to install/activate your eSIM in your home country. 

So my personal advice is to instal your eSIM for Indonesia before you get into the plane and as soon as the plane lands you will be connected without any problems.

How to activate an eSIM

Installing and activating an eSIM is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an eSIM and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email. But wait, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code. 

When you order an eSIM plan for Indonesia you instantly receive a summery of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed. 

You will see a summary of your eSIM order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your Indonesia eSIM. 

But installing an activating an eSIM is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the eSIM on. The QR contains all the information about your Indonesia eSIM.

Once you scan the code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your eSIM is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your eSIM otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur. 

Tip: if you order an eSIM with the same phone where you want to instal the eSIM on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation. 

Things to know before ordering an eSIM for Indonesia

Here are some general tips for using eSIMs when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for Indonesia eSIMs, but are things you have to know before buying an eSIM in general. 

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn't miss this, let me say this again: eSIMs only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any eSIM without any problems. 

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to Indonesia. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to Indonesia or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to Indonesia and use it as a portable WiFi device. 

Which smartphones support eSIMs?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an eSIM is if your smartphone supports eSIMs. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support eSIMs. 

The fastest way to find out if your phone is eSIM compatible is to dial *#06# on your phone. A screen will pop up and will show you a bunch of barcodes. If you see a barcode with 'EID', then you know your device is eSIM compatible.

If you are not sure then simply ask Google the question: is my (your phone model) eSIM compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these eSIM providers?

All the eSIM providers for Indonesia recommended in this guide are reputable eSIM providers reviewed and tested by the  Traveltomtom Team. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in Indonesia.

Traveltomtom has used  Airalo and SimOptions sim cards now for more than 5 years and never really faced a major issue.

The Traveltomtom Team has extensively tested and reviewed Nomad and they have proven to be a reliable eSIM provider. However, some mixed reviews have come back from the Traveltomtom Team about connectivity and activation.

Jetpac is a fairly new eSIM provider, but Traveltomtom only received positive feedback and excellent reviews about the eSIMs and services of Jetpac. Here is our review of Jetpac and why we think it is more than just an eSIM provider.

Since Traveltomtom is not a fan of eSIMs with unlimited data and an FUP I hardly use Holafly, but when I did I was not happy. So now I let the Traveltomtom Team randomly test Holafly and just like myself, mixed reviews have come back. Some positive, some negative.

Then there is also Roamless , an eSIM provider that offers an eSIM plans without an expiry date and another tested, reviewed and approved eSIM provider is Sim Local .

Traveltomtom does NOT sell Indonesia eSIMs, Traveltomtom only compares and recommends you to use eSIMs for traveling to Indonesia.

All eSIM providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Can I keep my phone number from home with an eSIM?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an eSIM to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia. An eSIM can be used next to your physical or eSIM from your home country at the same time.

So you can have multiple eSIMs installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new Indonesia eSIM you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

This is also the trick to keep receiving sms for example for OTP (one time password) sms to login to applications.

Switching between physical and eSIMs is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings. Just always make sure your sim card from home is switched off for data roaming. 

Can I make phone calls with an Indonesia eSIM?

No, unfortunately none of the by Traveltomtom recommended eSIMs for Indonesia include calling and texting. All the eSIMs from  SimOptions , Airalo , Jetpac , Holafly and Nomad are data-only eSIMs and any incoming/outgoing calls/sms are not supported. 

Does an Indonesia eSIM come with a phone number?

No, none of the Indonesia eSIMs that you can buy on the internet come with a phone number which also means you can not receive any phone calls or sms.

If you buy a local prepaid sim card in Indonesia then you will get a sim card with a phone number from Indonesia and unlimited calling and texting included. Reminder that you can now also opt for an eSIM when buying a sim card on arrival in Indonesia.

Can I use 5G on an Indonesia eSIM?

First of all don't get too excited about having 5G when traveling in Indonesia in 2024. There is still not much 5G around, the 5G network in Indonesia is very limited as of September 2024.

That said most of the eSIMs for Indonesia are now 5G ready, but not all of them. SimOptions, Airalo and Jetpac all upgraded all their eSIMs for Indonesia and they are now all 5G ready. Also Holafly claims that their eSIMs for Indonesia are 5G ready.

Are there eSIMs for Indonesia with unlimited data?

Yes, the Holafly eSIMs for Indonesia include unlimited data. However, Traveltomtom is not a big fan of unlimited data sim cards.

Always ask yourself is unlimited truly unlimited. Is there a catch? If the unlimited data is not on max data speed, then there is a so called FUP. Which means that your data speed will be capped after you used an X amount of Gigabytes.

Holafly is an eSIM provider that sells eSIMs with unlimited data for Indonesia and uses a so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP). Holafly does NOT specify what the FUP is. Which is very concerning!

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend Indonesia eSIMs with unlimited data plans with an FUP. On Holafly sim cards I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. After I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media was not even loading!

Especially on days that you are a long bus or train ride and you need a lot of data, you definitely don't want any data speed restrictions that day.

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend eSIMs for Indonesia with unlimited data. But if you think you will never use more than 2 GB per day, then Holafly might be your favorite eSIM.

However, if you don't use so much data per day then what's the point of an eSIM with unlimited data!?

The  Jetpac eSIM for $28 USD  gives you 20 GB data. There is no real need for an eSIM with unlimited data unless you want to upload your whole camera roll to a Google Drive or iCloud via 4G instead of WiFi.

There are a lot of different specifications per eSIM. Another reason why I advice you to take a close at my comparison of the best eSIMs for traveling to Indonesia in 2024 before choosing your favorite.

Are eSIMs the best way to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia?

eSIMs are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Indonesia, but what is the best way?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia: 

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards.

Let's compare eSIMs, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.

If you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards for Indonesia are a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip. Indonesia prepaid sim cards mostly offer bigger data plans than eSIMs and on top of that local prepaid sim cards come often with unlimited local calls and sms.

The big difference is that a local Indonesia prepaid sim card can only be purchased on arrival in Indonesia in a phone store or at the airport and NOT on the internet.

If your smartphone is not eSIM compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Indonesia. A physical prepaid sim card will be delivered to your home address.

eSIMs vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an eSIM on the internet is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple clicks. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to Indonesia. You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop on arrival in Indonesia. As soon as the plane lands, you are online. 

But what is cheaper? An eSIM or a local prepaid sim card for tourists?

When we compare Indonesia eSIM prices with local prepaid sim cards for Indonesia, our conclusion is that local prepaid sim cards are more affordable and you get more Gigabytes for the same price. But local prepaid sim cards can only be bought in Indonesia in a sim card shop.

That said, eSIMs that you buy on the internet already start from just $1 USD and local prepaid Indonesia tourists sim cards start from 250,000 IDR which is around $16 USD.

Indonesia has so called tourist sim cards specially designed for non-resident foreigners. And prices to register a new prepaid sim card start from $16 USD. After that the top-ups are really cheap and for $6 USD you can get 50 GB data.

After a long flight you just want to go to your hotel and it is often a big task to go to a sim card store and get connected. With eSIMs you buy on the internet you are connected as soon as the plane lands. For this convenience Traveltomtom definitely recommends to order one of the listed best eSIMs for Indonesia in the comparison above. 

Many reasons why a lot of travelers simply get an eSIM for Indonesia. Faster, easier, less stress and even cheaper depending on how much data you need.

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an eSIM is that eSIMs are often through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO's operate on the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that eSIMs through an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy. Especially during peak times, the performance of an eSIMs is less compared to a local prepaid sim card from a mobile internet operator.

Bottomline: the data speed of eSIMs can be less compared to a local prepaid Indonesia sim card.

“Anywhere else, aside from Jakarta?”

This was the reply I would usually get whenever I said I was going to the Indonesian capital. “No, just Jakarta,” was my answer. And it took them a second to realize that they heard my response right.

Jakarta feels strangely familiar. There is so much about it that reminds me of Metro Manila, my home city. Both are capital cities of developing Southeast Asian nations. Both are among the biggest urban hubs in the world, serving as a home and/or workplace for tens of millions of people. And for many international tourists, both are seen mostly as a jump-off point to another destination, a necessary means to a more spectacular end. In Jakarta’s case, this spectacular end can be the beaches of Bali , the temples of Yogyakarta , or the picturesque volcanoes in other parts of Java.

But like Manila, Jakarta can hold its own. It may not be as Instagram-worthy, but it does have a long history and rich culture, making it a great stop for Indonesia first timers. From the numerous museums to the sumptuous street food, the city will give you a taste of what the world’s greatest archipelago has to offer.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING JAKARTA

Jakarta is the capital of and the largest city in Indonesia. Located in the island of Java, the city serves as the economic, political, and cultural center of the country. Jakarta is sprawling. Over the years, as it continues to draw in more people, it also paves way for the development of neighboring areas.

Today, Jakarta may also refer to the Greater Jakarta area or the Jakarta metropolitan area, which is also called locally as Jabodetabek , short for Jakarta–Bogor–Depok–Tangerang–Bekasi, referring to the nearby cities in West Java and Banten. And with an estimated population of 35 million, it is the second largest urban hub in the world, next only to Tokyo.

The history of Jakarta dates back to the 4th century CE, making it one of the oldest inhabited cities in Southeast Asia. It has been known by several names. Under the Sunda Kingdom, it was known as Sunda Kelapa, an important trading port at the time. In 1619, the Dutch took control and founded Batavia which became the capital of the Dutch East Indies. Then in 1942, Batavia fell to the Japanese and was under the Japanese occupation until 1945. It was 1949 when the Indonesian independence was proclaimed and Jakarta became the national capital.

ESSENTIAL TRAVEL INFORMATION

• Language: Indonesian or Bahasa Indonesia. But most can understand and speak English.
• Religion: Islam is the dominant religion. A small part of the population practice Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
• Timezone: UTC+7 (Indonesia Western Time). Jakarta is one hour behind Manila, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
• Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR, Rp). USD 1 is around IDR 15,700; EUR 1 = IDR 16,200; PHP 1 = IDR 273 (as of December 2022).
• Modes of Payment: Cash. Some establishments like restaurants also accept credit cards, but most still prefer cash. However, there are some places that only take card payments.

INDONESIA TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

As of our most recent visit (November 2022), these are the requirements required for travelers going to Jakarta as mandated by the government. These must be presented when you check-in for your flight.

• Passport. Must be valid for at least 6 months.
• COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate. Only fully vaccinated individuals are allowed to enter Jakarta. Your vaccination certificate must indicate 2 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
• PeduliLindungi App. Download the app through google playstore or app store and register.
• E-customs Declaration Form. Fill out the form here . Print or save a digital copy of the generated QR Code.

Depending on your country of citizenship, a visa may also be required. (Filipino citizens may enter Indonesia VISA-FREE.)

WHERE TO STAY IN JAKARTA

Jakarta is huge. Covering 664.01 square kilometers, Jakarta is divided it into its five administrative cities: Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta, and South Jakarta. Easy to remember, right? But these five areas have the key points of interest for tourists:

• Central Jakarta is home to major landmarks like the National Monument and Istiqlal Mosque. Also situated here is Gambir Station, a major railway station that connects the capital to other cities in Java Island. You’ll also find Grand Indonesia, one of the biggest malls in the country, around the corner. A large concentration of the accommodations in Central Jakarta can be found in Menteng .
• North Jakarta covers the harbor area, the historic port of Sunda Kelapa, and Ancol, a waterfront complex with a theme park, water park, and other various attractions.
• West Jakarta , the closest to the airport, roughly 30 minutes away. Within its territory lie parts of Kota Tua, Jakarta’s Old Town. Glodok , Jakarta’s Chinatown, where you can find a lot of food spots, is also here. A number of different types of accommodations are spread over West Jakarta.
• South Jakarta , which harbors the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD), with plenty of office buildings, condominiums, hotels, and shopping malls. If you’re interested in experiencing the nightlife in Jakarta, this is the place to be. The accommodations in this area varies from high-end hotels to budget hostels so there are a lot to choose from.
• East Jakarta . This is the largest among the five administrative cities of Jakarta. However, there’s not a lot of accommodations available here. It is also the area farthest from the airport.

Best Area to Stay

In our opinion, the best area to stay is the part where Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, and North Jakarta meet. Staying here puts you in a position close to the key attractions and with plenty of dining and lodging options.

This area includes these neighborhoods:

• Glodok (Chinatown) in West Jakarta
• Menteng in Central Jakarta
• Kota Tua in North/West Jakarta

Any of places above are great for first-time Jakarta visitors. However, if you’re the type of traveler who likes to spend their nights going out or partying, South Jakarta might be a great option too. Just keep in mind that this area is a bit farther from other parts of the city, especially if you plan to visit attractions in North Jakarta.

Top Budget Hotels and Hostels in Jakarta

I booked a dorm bed at The Packer Lodge near Kota Tua for only PHP 450 per night . Yep, that’s only USD 8 or 124,000 IDR. But by random streak of good luck, I was upgraded to a private solo room for FREE! (Possibly because they might have overbooked the dorm.)

HOW TO GET TO JAKARTA

The primary airport that serves Jakarta is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) , formerly called Jakarta Cengkareng Airport. It is located at Benda, Tangerang, close to West Jakarta. It was expanded in 1991 to replace Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport, which now services mostly domestic and private flights—for international flights. CGK is said to be the busiest airport in Southeast Asia and currently has 3 terminals with a fourth terminal being built.

Manila to Jakarta

As Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta is well-connected. If you’re coming from Manila, Cebu Pacific flies directly to Jakarta and vice versa DAILY. The flight departs from Manila at 8:40 PM and takes around four hours. This is perfect for busy bees who cannot afford to file another leave of absence from work or students who can’t miss a school day. This also means you arrive in Jakarta just before midnight, bypassing heavy traffic to the city center.

For your return journey, Cebu Pacific’s Jakarta-Manila flights are scheduled at 12:30 AM, allowing you to make the most of your last day in Jakarta! Just leave your luggage temporarily at your hotel upon checkout, explore the city the entire day, and pick it up before heading to the airport.

Cebu Pacific has three bundle options for your flight booking: GO Basic comes with a free hand-carry baggage allowance (7kg). If you want a checked bag and reserved seats, GO Easy includes a one piece checked baggage (up to 20kg) and a standard seat. Jakarta Airport to City Center

Travel time from the airport to your hotel depends on which part of Jakarta you choose to stay, but it could take between 30 minutes to an hour. The most convenient way is by taking a taxi or using a ride hailing app. More details about these below.

Countless taxis await potential passengers at the airport. After going through customs and before reaching the exit, you’ll be welcomed by people offering you taxi services. If you want to take a taxi, a recommended taxi service by locals is Blue Bird . You’ll find a Blue Bird booth to your left after you exit, near the SIM card stores.

However, in my experience, their rate was higher than Grab, but this could vary. You can go to the booth to inquire about the fare going to your hotel and compare it to rates on Grab or Gojek.

By Grab or Gojek

These two are the ride hailing apps available in Jakarta. It is easy to use and booking a ride only takes a few minutes. The Grab pick-up point in Terminal 3 is located at the parking of the arrival area. After you pass through customs, turn to your right and head towards the Pick-up zone. You should be exiting through the West Lobby door. At the parking, you will find signage for the Grab Pick-up Point.

It is important to know that the fare that shows on the app is not the final fare. A parking fee and highway fee or toll fee will be added on top of it. This was also clearly communicated by the person at the Grab Pick-up point once I got there and the driver after I entered the car. But the Grab fare still turned out cheaper than the Blue Bird rate even after adding these fees.

• Parking Fee: IDR 5,000
• Highway/toll fee: IDR 18,500

Gojek is also available at the airport. The pick-up point at Terminal 3 is also located at the international parking area. Gojek also adds the parking fee & toll fee plus a location fee on top of the fare that shows on the app when you book your ride.

Internet Connection / Data SIM in Jakarta

The most affordable way of staying connected in Indonesia is by purchasing a data SIM card. However, SIM cards in Jakarta need to be registered first, so you’ll need to present your passport to get one. Two of the most popular internet providers are XL Axiata and Telkomsel.

You can get a SIM card at the airport, but keep in mind that the prices here are significantly higher than prices at a telco branch or SIM card center. Moreover, airport stores are open only from 7:00AM to 3:00AM.

If you’re from any of the countries below, you can have the data SIM card delivered to you when you avail of it online:

• Deliver SIM to INDIA
• Deliver to SINGAPORE
• Deliver SIM to HONG KONG
• Deliver SIM to VIETNAM

If you’re from the Philippines or any other country, you may opt to pick up Indonesia DATA SIM at the Jakarta Airport (Soekarno Hatta International Airport). The pick up location is at the JavaMifi booth at Terminal 3 Departure at the 2nd floor. The staff will also help you set up the sim card on your phone. If you’re arriving in Jakarta late at night, you won’t be able to avail of this since their registration has a cut-off time. Another option to consider is Grapari , the SIM card center of the telecommunications company Telkomsel . They have multiple locations all over Jakarta. If you want to save and you can manage to go from the airport without data, just look up the Grapari branch closest to your hotel. More info on its website .

HOW TO GET AROUND JAKARTA

Jakarta is a very busy city and there are various transportation options available. There are a lot of taxis all over the city and you can also use ride hailing apps. Commuting is also an option since they have an efficient public bus transportation called Transjakarta . However, because it is a busy city, the traffic gets heavy especially during rush hours.

If you’re visiting attractions, some of them are within walking distance from each other. You can walk from The National Monument to see Merdeka Palace, and then walk to the National Museum. You can also explore Kota Tua or the Old Town on foot. You can choose from the following mode of transportations to explore Indonesia’s capital depending on your budget and preferences.

There are a lot of taxis around the city. In some areas there are cabs lined up by the side of the road so you don’t have to hail a cab on the street anymore. The suggested reliable taxi company in Jakarta is Blue Bird . Their units are easy to spot because they’re, well, blue.

Riding a taxi may pose a challenge because of language barrier since not everyone speaks and understands English. But what you can do is write down the address of your destination or find it on Google Maps, and show it to the driver when you take a taxi. You may also ask your hotel to call a taxi for you and ask them for help to communicate your destination to the driver.

By Grab or GoJek

• Car. If you want a more convenient mode of transportation, book a Grab or Gojek. It is more simple since all you need to do is pin your pick-up location and destination on the app and wait for your car to arrive. You may also pay using credit card or cash when using ride hailing apps.
• Motorcycle. This is the best way to beat the traffic in Jakarta. If you’re traveling solo, Grab and GoJek also have a motorcycle/bike option. The motorcycle is also much cheaper compared to the car option. So if you’re on a budget, this is a great option to get from one place to another quicker and at a less price.

By Transjakarta Bus

Taking public transportation is the cheapest option. Each ride costs only IDR 3,500 no matter where your destination is. The bus is very efficient since there are 13 lines and over 200 stations all over the city. You may use Google maps to know which bus line you should take and where you should get off to reach your destination.

Here’s how you can ride the Transjakarta buses:

• Purchase a Transjakarta Card at a convenience store. These cards are available at any Indomaret, Alfamart, and other convenience stores in Jakarta. Each card costs IDR 27,500.
• Top up your card at the digital kiosk at any station. You may also top-up your card when you purchase it at a convenience store, but their minimum amount is IDR 50,000 while you can top up as low as P10,000 at the station.
• Tap your bus card on the ticket barrier at the station to enter.
• Tap again to exit the station where you’ll get off.

Riding the bus can take much longer compared to the taxi, car service, or motorcycle taxi. You can look up your destination on Google maps and compare the travel time for each and decide from there depending on your time and budget.

THINGS TO DO IN JAKARTA

Also known as Old Batavia , Kota Tua is Jakarta’s Old Town. It was a part of the first walled settlement of the Dutch in Jakarta and also served as the capital of the Dutch East Indies. In this area, you will find Dutch-style structures from the 17th century. Some of them used to be government buildings that has been turned into museums. Here are some of the places you can visit in Kota Tua.

• Jakarta History Museum , also called the Fatahillah Museum or Batavia Museum. It used to be the city hall of Batavia. After Indonesia gained its independence, it became the seat of the West Java governor until 1961 and a museum in 1974. Today it highlights Indonesia’s past from the pre-historic era to the Dutch colonization to independence. – Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM; Monday, CLOSED – Entrance Fee: IDR 5,000
• Fatahillah Square , where shophouses used to stand. It is located right at the center of the old town and is surrounded by museums. It serves as a recreational area for locals and tourists alike. Bikes are also available for rent at IDR 20,000 per unit, good for 30 minutes.

• Museum Wayang , putting the spotlight on Indonesia’s traditional puppet theater. Admire various types of wayang like wayang kulit , Javanese leather puppets, and wayang golek , Sundanese three-dimensional wooden puppets. In the museum’s garden, you will find the funeral site of Jan Pieterszoon Con, the Governor-general of the Dutch East Indies. – Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM; Monday, CLOSED – Entrance Fee: IDR 5,000
• Museum Bank Indonesia , housed in a heritage building that used to be the De Javasche Bank, the central bank of Dutch East Indies. It was converted into a museum in 2006, presenting the role of Bank Indonesia in Indonesian history as well as the history of currencies and trade in the country. – Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM; Monday, CLOSED – Entrance Fee: IDR 5,000
• Bank Mandiri Museum , the corporate museum of Bank Mandiri. Established in 1998, this museum is home to artifacts that was used in banking activities in the past. – Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM; Monday, CLOSED – Entrance Fee: IDR 15,000
• Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics , housed in the former Court of Justice under the Dutch. It showcases traditional Indonesian paintings and ceramics. Join a pottery workshop and make a piece of your choice. The workshop lasts for 30 to 45 minutes. – Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM; Monday, CLOSED – Entrance Fee: IDR 5,000 – Pottery Workshop: IDR 50,000
• Cafe Batavia , set in the second oldest building in the square. Constructed in the 19th century, the 2-story building has a bar, performance stage, and lounge area on the ground floor and the “Grand Salon”, which is the main dining hall on the upper floor. This is one of the most recommended restaurants in Jakarta because of its historic location, good food, and great service. They serve Indonesian food from breakfast to dinner plus a few western dishes. Their menu also includes coffee, tea, non-alcoholic, and alcoholic drinks. – Operating Hours: Monday to Thursday, 9:00 AM – 12:00 AM; Friday, 9:00 AM to 1:00 AM; Saturday, 7:00 AM – 1:00 AM; Sunday, 7:00 AM – 12:00 AM

The biggest Chinatown in Indonesia, Glodok was established back in the Dutch colonial period.

Today, Glodok is dotted with stores selling snacks and Chinese medicine. There’s also a market where you can buy seafood, fruits, and vegetables. Foodies will also be delighted by an array of dining options, from street food stalls to food courts.

Merdeka Square & Surrounding Landmarks

Merdeka Square serves as a recreational park for the locals. With an area of around 75 hectares, the square is so vast that they even have a shuttle to take you to the National Monument , its centerpiece.

If you visit at night, you will see the Monas light up and illuminate the square. There’s also a food court area here where you can have snacks or a meal.

Here are some of the structures within and around Jakarta’s Merdeka Square:

• National Monument , also called Monas , the symbol of Indonesian independence. The 132-meter (433-foot) monument was erected under President Sukarno and was opened to the public in 1975. Incorporated in its design is the date of the proclamation of Indonesia’s independence — August 17, 1945. Visitors may enter the National Monument and climb to the top to get a panoramic view of central Jakarta. – Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM – Entrance Fee: IDR 40,000

• National Museum of Indonesia , aka the Elephant Museum or Museum Gajah because of the elephant statue in front of the museum building. It is said to be the most complete in the country. It boasts around 141,000 artifacts including pre-historic, anthropological, and archeological artifacts from Indonesia and other parts of Asia, housed in two main buildings: Gedung Gajah which is the old wing, and Gedung Arca which is a new wing that was added in 2007. – Operating Hours: Daily, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM – Entrance Fee: IDR 25,000
• Jakarta Cathedral , officially named The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. It serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Jakarta. The current neo-Gothic structure is not the original church, but what was rebuilt after it collapsed in 1890.
• Merdeka Palace , located on the north side of Merdeka Square. It is also known as Istana Merdeka in Indonesian. The construction of the palace started in 1873 and was completed in 1879. It was then called the Palace of the Governor-general. After Indonesia gained its independence in 1949, it became the residence of the president of the Republic of Indonesia. You may see the palace from across the street near Merdeka Square.
• Istiqlal Mosque , the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. Its construction took 17 years, from 1961 to 1978. It was built to mark the independence of Indonesia hence the name Istiqlal , which means independence in Arabic. Visitors may enter the mosque through Gate 5, which is right across the Jakarta Cathedral. They also provide a guided tour of the mosque to tourists. The tour is FREE but you are welcome to give a tip or donation. Tour is held every 30 minutes from 10am to 11:30am, from 1pm to 3pm, and 4pm to 4:30pm.

A 19th century market located in Central Jakarta, Pasar Baru is one of the oldest shopping districts in the city.

The whole street is lined with stores selling mostly textiles, shoes, and clothes. You will definitely not miss this area when you visit because the street is marked by a bridge and a gate that displays its name.

Ancol Beach

Ancol is a waterfront complex located in the coastal area of North Jakarta. Inside Ancol is a theme park called Dunia Fantasi or Dufan. You’ll also find Atlantis Water Adventure which is a waterpark featuring the ancient cities of the Mediterranean.

Also located within he complex are an ecopark, an art market, and Gondola Ancol , which is the first cable car ride in Indonesia. Each of these attractions has a separate entrance fee.

You may purchase tickets online through their website . You may also pay for the ticket at the entrance on-site, but take note that they only accept card payments for now.

Textile Museum

Textiles are a huge part of Indonesia’s culture. Museum Tekstil displays collections from different parts of the country. Located in West Jakarta, the museum was inaugurated in 1976 in honor of Madame Tien Soeharto, who was Indonesia’s first lady at the time.

Aside from the different textiles, traditional weaving instruments and equipment used to make batik also take centerstage inside the museum.

Visitors may also join a workshop where you can get try making batik. From the gate of the museum, turn to your left and follow the sign that says Pendopo Batik . You may also tell the person at the entrance that you want to make batik so they can lead you to the workshop area. Here, the nice ladies who make batik will guide you through the whole process starting from tracing your chosen design and using the tjanting , a traditional tool used to apply the liquid was to the fabric in batik making. The whole process takes around an hour and you get to keep your batik and the tjanting as a souvenir!

Jalan Surabaya Flea Market

Along Jalan Surabaya in Menteng District lies a flea market. The street is lined with stores selling tons of various antique items. A visit to Jalan Surabaya is a must — especially if you’re interested in antique items or you just like looking at random unique pieces, from trinkets to collectibles to chandeliers. Also available are old CDs and vinyls, ceramics, and a lot more!

WHERE TO EAT IN JAKARTA

Jakarta’s food scene mirrors Indonesia’s rich culture and long history. The food here is a mix of different cuisines from various parts of Indonesia, with influences from other places. You won’t have a hard time looking for a place to eat in Jakarta because it’s bursting with choices — from street food stalls to hawker centers (food courts) to proper sit-down restaurants. And because Indonesia has a strong coffee culture, you will also find a lot of cafes ranging from traditional establishments to modern ones that give a new spin to everyone’s favorite drink.

• Sabang Street. Found in Central Jakarta, Sabang street food or Kampung Kuliner Sabang is located along Jl. H. Agus Salim. Starting at around 5PM, vendors begin to set up and open up their tents by the side of the road. This is one of the best places to visit in Jakarta if you want to try various Indonesian dishes — including sate , gudeg , nasi goreng , and martabak .
• Glodok. Chinatown’s streets are flanked with establishments selling snacks, fruits, and desserts. Some stalls also sell meals like bakso and nasi goreng that you can eat right there on the kerbside while sitting on a chair.
• Petak Enam. If you prefer to have a meal more comfortably while you’re in Chinatown, head over to Petak Enam, a food court in Glodok. The place is filled to the seams with stalls offering various Indonesian dishes and other cuisines too including soto betawi , which is beef soup with coconut milk broth; and nasi campur , white rice served with different types of meat dishes.

• Kopi Es Ta Kie. A breakfast place in Glodok, Kopi Es Ta Kie is one of the oldest cafes in Jakarta. This family-owned institution has been in business since 1927 and has been passed on over generations. They are open from early morning to early afternoon serving food like nasi campur, bakmi ayam, and more along with their coffee. Aside from the restaurant in Glodok, they also now have several branches in Jakarta. – Operating Hours: Daily, 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM. But they might close early once they sell out.
• Kopi Oey Sabang. Kopi Oey has several branches, too, but their most popular branch is probably the one in Sabang. The coffee shop has an Indonesian Chinese design with walls paintings and framed photos of food. Their menu includes a variety of nasi goreng, soto and sop, mie or noodles, pasta, roti, and other Indonesian breakfast food. If you’re a coffee lover, included in their selection are single origin coffee which you can pick your preferred brewing method. – Operating Hours: Sunday to Thursday, 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM; Friday to Saturday, 7:00 AM – 12:00 AM – Address: Jl. H. Agus Salim 
• Giyanti Coffee Roastery. if you’re after cafes with Instagrammable interiors, consider Giyanti Coffee Roastery in Jalan Surabaya. This is a perfect stop for coffee and pastries for breakfast or after you feast your eyes with antiques and shop at the flea market. It has a vibrant interior and a lot of seating space including an outdoor area with a garden feel. Because it is also a roastery, you can also purchase coffee beans here that you can take home. – Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM; Monday, CLOSED – Address: Jl. Surabaya, Menteng  – Note: Giyanti Coffee Roastery does not accept cash payments. You may pay using debit or credit card.

You may still minimize the cost if you stay in a dorm or book a cheaper hotel like we did. In reality we only paid IDR 124,000 per night.

This also includes a big allowance for incidental expenses.

When is the best time to visit jakarta.

Jakarta has a tropical climate. The temperature here doesn’t change so much throughout the year. However, the chance of rain varies significantly making the wet and dry season very apparent. The dry months are from May to October, with the driest month being August, so schedule your trip around this time if you want to avoid the rain ruining your plans.

The wettest months are September to April, with the most rain in January. During these months, some parts of the city are prone to flooding. Public holidays may also affect the traffic and the operating hours of attractions and other establishments. Here’s the list of public holidays in Indonesia:

I’ve only tried a couple of money changers along Gajah Mada near Glodok. They are open until late night and there’s one that is open for 24 hours. DollarIndo and Primatama have the same or very similar rates, which are pretty good.
