Blooming camellias, soft shade cast by Spanish moss, waves breaking on white sand shores and Crimson Tide football are just a few things that make Alabama special. This diverse state boasts natural beauty in its sparkling waterfalls, majestic mountains and varied wildlife. Cleanse your soul in Little River Canyon with its waterfalls and rock formations, or bike, hike or camp in the Talladega National Forest.

Alabama has a strong sense of history with its seemingly untouched antebellum homes and museums dedicated to the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Visit the Alabama State Capitol to stand on the steps Martin Luther King Jr. himself marched down during the third Selma to Montgomery demonstration in 1965.

The world’s largest space museum, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, is also in Alabama. Huntsville to be exact. Stroll through Rocket Park and let your imagination wander as you gaze up at the 27 missiles and rockets towering above. The museum will take your mind on a journey as you learn the ins and outs of space exploration.

Beyond its attractions, Alabama is home to incredibly friendly locals. Ask them where to find the best fried chicken and biscuits and you won’t be disappointed!

Licensure Requirements

If you currently hold a multistate license in another compact state, we have great news — you do not need to obtain an Alabama RN or LPN license to work as a travel nurse in the state. However, you will still need to apply for approval to engage in advanced practice nursing even if you are an APRN with a multistate license in another compact state.

If you don’t have a multistate license, you’ll need to apply for licensure by endorsement.

Here are the following requirements you’ll need to meet for an Alabama nursing license:

  • You must be a legal citizen or US resident.
  • You must have a valid Social Security Number.
  • You must have graduated from a nursing program with the same educational criteria as Alabama nursing programs.
  • You must submit an official transcript for your nursing program in a sealed envelope to the Alabama Board of Nursing (faxed copies are not permitted).
  • You must provide documentation showing you have earned 24 contact hours of CE (continuing education) within the last 24 months.
  • You must submit a Request for Verification of Nursing License for Endorsement into Alabama form . The Alabama Board of Nursing also allows licensure verification through Nursys Ⓡ .
  • You must submit your fingerprints prior to completing your license application.

It typically takes three to four weeks for licensure by endorsement application to be verified. As long as you meet the application requirements for licensure, you can apply for a temporary license to practice nursing in Alabama while waiting for your license to be verified.

Licensure Fees

Application fees for licensure by endorsement include:

  • $100 application fee for a single-state license and $200 for a multi-state license
  • Temporary permit fee $50
  • Transaction fees: $3.50

Nurse Licensure Compact Status

Alabama became a party to the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) on January 1st, 2020.
