Latest live M6 traffic news

Live m6 traffic news and updates for m6 junctions, plus real time travel reports on delays, accidents, roadworks and snow.

travel news m6 today

The M6 is a key road for Britain, as the motorway links the Midlands with the Scottish border, sending traffic through Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Liverpool, Manchester, Lancaster and Carlisle. And given the M6’s location at the centre of Britain’s motorway network, it should be no surprise that the 232-mile road is prone to delays around the clock – especially during peak travel periods such as bank holiday weekends and summer school holidays.

As the M6 consists of the standard three lanes for much of its length, congestion and tailbacks can form quickly, and subsequently incidents can take a long time to clear. So everything including accidents, roadworks, and even seasonal problems such as snow, can have a severe effect on adjoining roads.

• Best sat-navs on sale

The history of the M6 motorway

Among its many claims to fame, the M6 incorporates Britain’s first ever stretch of motorway – formally known as the Preston By-pass, which was opened in 1958. Nowadays that’s just a fraction of the M6 overall, which stretches for 232 miles from Junction 19 of the M1 near Rugby, all the way to Gretna. The final section was finally completed in 2008.

•  Live A1 traffic news

Features of the route include Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham, which is more formally known as Junction 6 of the M6. The M6 also boasts the longest viaduct in Britain, running for 3.5 miles between Castle Bromwich and Gravelly Hill, and the second highest motorway stretch in the country – the Shap Fell section is 320m above sea-level, and beaten only by the M62 motorway at Saddleworth Moor.

Highways officials have been forced to shut off a number of lanes on the M6 following a crash involving 'multiple lorries'. The collision has occurred on the northbound carriageway between Junction 18 and 19.

It has resulted in three lanes being shut off. An update issued by National Highways states: "Three lanes (of four) lanes are closed on the M6 north between J18 and J19 in Cheshire.

All lanes back open

Just before 1.40am National Highways confirmed that the emergency resurfacing works were completed.

Thanks for following the blog.

14 miles of congestion

There are delays of up to two hours on the M6 northbound in Cheshire, due to an incident between J18 (Holmes Chapel) and J19 (Tabley). Lanes 1, 2 and 3 (of 4) remain closed following an earlier collision which resulted in a large spillage across the carriageway. Traffic is passing the scene via lane four only.

Recovery is now complete. However due to damage sustained to the road surface following the collision, emergency resurfacing works are now underway. National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance assisting with traffic management.

There is approximately 14 miles of congestion on approach to the incident.

Delays of two hours

Severe delays of up to TWO hours remain on the approach.

120-minute delays

National Highways warns there are delays of 120 minutes on the stretch.

Traffic released

Due to damage sustained to the road following the earlier collision, resurfacing works are now underway on the M6 north J18 to J19. Traffic has been held periodically to assist contractors, this has been released with lane four open past the scene.

Emergency resurfacing works underway

Cheshire Police have confirmed that emergency resurfacing works are now underway on the M6 northbound at J18 (Holmes Chapel) and J19 (Tabley).

Latest from the M6

National Highways has this afternoon set out just how the repairs will be carried out - which will see one lane staying open while the others are fixed.

A spokesman said: "National Highways is carrying out emergency resurfacing following a collision involving five lorries. The collision resulted in a shed load and oil and diesel fuel damage across three lanes – leaving only lane four open to drivers past the scene.

"While the lorries have now been removed from the area there is damage of some kind – caused by gouging, hydraulic oil or diesel fuel – in lanes one, two and three of the northbound carriageway and it’s not possible to safely run any traffic over these lanes without repairs and resurfacing.

undefined

"Lanes one and two will be resurfaced this afternoon and lane four will remain open to traffic. Once this has been completed, lane one will re-open and lane three will be resurfaced with the adjoining lanes closed for safety reasons due to the size of the heavy plant required for the work."

Full story here.

'Avoid the M6 northbound'

National Highways are urging motorists to avoid the northbound stretch of the motorway as efforts continue. Highways officials are tabout to complete the removal of the five lorries involved.

It is then understood a full inspection of the three affected lanes will be carried out to see just what repairs need to be carried out. Motorists are ultimately being told to stay away while these efforts continue.

A spokesman said: "Traffic is currently passing the scene of the incident in lane four but there is heavy congestion in the area and drivers are being advised to avoid this section of the northbound M6 by delaying journeys or taking alternative routes.

"National Highways is at the scene working to recover the five HGVs and a shed load and to clean the carriageway - with diesel fuel and hydraulic and engine oil spilled across the lanes. The carriageway will also need to be inspected for damage and potentially repaired before it can be fully re-opened. Lanes are likely to remain closed throughout the morning while this work takes place."

Three hours of delays

Queues are now back to Junction 16 with National Highways warning motorists of three hours of delays. Three lanes remain shut as 'complex recovery and clear-up works' continue at the scene.

A casualty has been taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital following this morning's crash on the M6. Cheshire Police has confirmed officers were called to the scene at 4am to reports of a smash involving four trucks and a tanker.

The patient is believed to have suffered 'serious injuries' which are not currently considered to be life-threatening.
