Montreux, Switzerland, is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Geneva, in the French-speaking region of Switzerland. Part of the Canton of Vaux, the city is set at the foot of the Alps and forms the center of the Montreux Riviera, famous for its scenery, mild microclimate, and as a playground for the rich and famous.

Regardless of what season you visit, this relaxed lakeside city has plenty to keep visitors occupied for a few days or more. Here are 10 of the top things to do in and around Montreux.

Go Back in Time at Chillon Castle

Imposing Chillon Castle, or Château de Chillon in French, sits on a rocky outcrop just offshore in Lake Geneva, less than 2 miles from downtown Montreux. The castle foundations date to the 12th century, when it was used as a summer home and strategic outpost of the House of Savoy. In the 1900s, the castle was meticulously restored to its early medieval state, and today it is one of the most visited castles in Europe. Fans of Game of Thrones might feel like they've wandered into Winterfell. We highly recommend booking a guided tour or, at minimum, renting the audio guide of the castle.

Step Into Charlie Chaplin's World

MontreuxRiviera.com

Cinematic giant Charlie Chaplin spent the last 24 years of his life at Manoir de Ban near Montreux, where he lived with his wife, Oona, and their eight children. His estate is now Chaplin's World, a multi-acre attraction that includes a museum in the former mansion, a Hollywood-style studio with stage sets from Chaplin's most famous films, and an expansive park. Even those with just a mild interest in Chaplin's life will get something from a visit here. Chaplin's World is in Vezey, about 5 miles northwest of Montreux.

Stroll, Jog or Bike the Montreux Lakeside

For 4 miles along the shores of Lake Geneva, the Montreux Lakeside promenade offers a pleasant, scenic, and mercifully flat walking path for walkers, joggers, and bikers. During most of the year, the promenade is vibrantly landscaped and bright with colorful flowers.

Jam at the Montreux Jazz Festival

For more than 50 years, the Montreux Jazz Festival has been one of the world's top music festivals, attracting world-renowned artists for two weeks every summer. Elton John, David Bowie, Prince, Aretha Franklin, and Lady Gaga are just some of the esteemed performers who have taken the stage here. Top-tier concerts, free performances, and impromptu jam sessions are all part of the festival tradition. If you plan to attend, buy your concert tickets and book your hotel early, as this beloved event is sure to sell out.

Ascend to the Alps on the Rochers de Naye Train

For a thrilling ride to high altitudes, board the charming Rochers-de-Naye cogwheel train at Montreux train station, and gaze in awe during the 55-minute climb to Rochers-de-Naye, 6,700 feet above sea level. The scenery is stunning year-round, especially as the train climbs diagonally through forests and over mountains, with the lake spread out below. Activities at the summit range from gentle walks to grueling via ferrata climbs. At Christmas, Santa Claus's house opens in the snow-covered setting.

Cruise Lake Geneva in a Vintage Steamer

A boat ride on Lake Geneva is practically obligatory during a stay in Montreux, especially on a sunny day. Lake Geneva General Navigation Company (CGN) offers daily sightseeing cruises in the summertime about one of its vintage steamships, which date to the early 1900s. Lunch and dinner cruises are also offered. If you're touring Switzerland without a car, the steamer is a great way to transfer to Geneva, Lausanne, and other cities along the lake.

Pose with Freddie Mercury

MontreuxRiviera.com

Freddie Mercury, the charismatic lead singer of the rock band Queen, performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1978 and was so enchanted with the city that he moved here, keeping an apartment overlooking the lake until he died in 1991. The band recorded at Mountain Studios in Montreux, which can now be visited as Queen: The Studio Experience. A larger than life statue of Mercury stands at the center of Montreux's lakefront, where fans leave flowers and pose for photos.

Sip Wine in the Stunning Lavaux Terraced Vineyards

To the north and west of Montreux, the Lavaux wine-growing region is famous for its stepped rows of terraced vineyards, which climb high onto mountainsides and overlook the lake below. The unique terrain and terraced cultivation method earned the Lavaux vineyard terraces a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Wine tourism is well-organized here, allowing visitors to ascend to vineyards on tourist trains, learn about Lavaux wine, and, of course, sample and purchase it as well.

Explore Vevey's Narrow Lanes

With its well-preserved old town, much of which dates to the Middle Ages, Vevey is a lovely and interesting place to spend a few hours. A small maze of pedestrian-only alleys and passageways add to the charm here. On Tuesdays and Saturdays in the summertime, a vibrant market draws locals and visitors to Grande Place, the sprawling lakefront square. You can reach Vevey by train or boat or, if you're feeling energetic, you can walk or bike here from Montreux.

Celebrate the Season with Montreux Noel

From late November until Christmas Eve, the Montreux lakefront is the scene of Montreux Noel, one of Switzerland's biggest Christmas markets. Artisans' shops, huts selling fondue, pretzels, gluhwein (hot, spiced wine), a Ferris wheel, and countless fairy lights cast a magical glow on the scene. Three times a night, Santa and his reindeer fly across the lakefront in a special rocket-propelled sleigh.

Montreux Switzerland - Vacation Guide

Montreux is the most frequented resort on Lake Geneva and famous for its beautiful lakeside location in the southwestern part of Switzerland. Enhanced by a spectacular background of the Alps, the town of 26,000 inhabitants has charmed many people in the past. Montreux’s Mediterranean climate has given this city a reputation as being one of the noblest resort destinations in Switzerland. Book your Montreux, Switzerland vacation today!

The city of Montreux stretches along the shore of Lake Geneva and rises in elevated tiers covered with Mediterranean trees and vineyards. Aside from its historical architecture, picturesque lakeside views, and exclusive stores, Montreux also hosts internationally known cultural events. Since 1967, the city has hosted its annual Montreux Jazz Festival in which the world’s most talented jazz, blues, and rock musicians are featured.

Situated on the edge of Lake Geneva and at the foot of the alps, Montreux is a small resort town in the Vaud canton of Switzerland with a huge amount to offer.

Out of all of the towns and cities around Lake Geneva, this is my personal favourite. I’d recommend basing yourself in Montreux whilst you explore all of the great things to do in the surrounding region and it makes a great stop on any Interrailing trip through Switzerland .

In this guide, I’ll share the best things to do in Montreux during each season and a few suggestions for when it’s raining.

Things to do in Montreux Year-Round

Best things to do in montreux in winter, best things to do in montreux in summer, things to do in montreux when it rains, 1. walk along the lakeside.

tourist information montreux switzerland

The best part of Montreux is the lakeside where you can enjoy the lake breeze with panoramic mountains that reflect off the water.

You can walk along the lake in either direction with a total 7 km of walkway to choose from. The gardeners of Montreux keep the pathway feeling fresh with exotic flowers and palm trees.

You’ll also spot several sculptures along the pathway with more added in summer as part of the Montreux Biennale, an annual sculpture exhibition on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Look out for the bronze Freddie Mercury statue that graces the shoreline in Montreux. This is one of many dedications to him in this area which he had made his home.

2. Chillon Castle at Sunset

tourist information montreux switzerland

If you take the aforementioned path and head left when looking at the lake, you’ll eventually come to Chateau de Chillon (Chillon Castle), a medieval fortress situated just offshore.

The walk from Montreux takes about 40 minutes or you can take bus 201 from just outside the casino and you’ll reach the castle in about 15 minutes.

Explore the medieval castle at your own pace with the audio guide. Stroll through more than 40 rooms, each well preserved and rich in culture, it will feel a bit like taking a step back in time.

However, I personally enjoyed viewing the castle from the outside and especially at sunset when beautiful colours protrude from behind the mountain, lighting the sky and the castle with it.

  • April – Sept, Daily, 9am – 7pm (last entry 6pm)
  • Adults: CHF 13.50

3. Visit the Olympic Capital of Lausanne

tourist information montreux switzerland

Lausanne is the capital of the canton of Vaud in which Montreux lies. Even if you’ve opted to base yourself in Montreux, it’s still worth taking some time to visit Lausanne.

The city is known as the Olympic capital because it’s been home to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee for over a century.

The main attraction in the city is the Olympic Museum which is the largest collection of Olympic items int the world. Expect Olympic torches, medals and equipment as well as a huge archive of video footage from some of the games’ greatest moments.

Opening (Olympic Museum):

  • Summer, Daily, 9am-6pm
  • Winter, Tues – Sun, 10am-6pm

Cost (Olympic Museum):

  • Adults: CHF 18
  • Children: CHF 10

4. Take A Boat on Lake Geneva

tourist information montreux switzerland

Hop aboard a boat in Montreux and enjoy a scenic ride on Switzerland’s largest lake. The main boat operator on the lake, CGN, operates a service around the northern end that calls at 9 destinations including Montreux, Villeneuve, Chillon Castle and Vevey.

A round trip without getting off costs CHF 17 for the 49min circuit or CHF 36 for the full 2 hour circuit.

Many of the services have an onboard restaurant serving full meals so this could make a great dinner cruise, I recommend you reserve a table.

Alternatively, you can purchase a day pass and get off at as many of the stops as you like. The cost of this is CHF 64 for a single adult although only CHF 70 for a family of 5.

5. Eat Fondue

tourist information montreux switzerland

If you like melted cheese and you like bread, then this Swiss delicacy will be right up your street.

Fondue is the national dish and one of Switzerland’s most iconic things . Quite simply there is a communal pot filled with melted cheese and you use long forks to dip in pieces of bread. Mmmmm.

Where to find the best Fondue in Montreux :

The dish can be found all over Switzerland and Montreux is no exception. Here are a few recommended places to try the dish in and around Montreux:

  • Restaurant Le Museum, Montreux
  • Les 3 Sifflets, Vevey
  • Caveau des Vignerons, Montreux

6. Try A Chocolate Workshop

Head over to Vevey and seek out the boutique chocolatier called Laderach Chocolatier Suisse for some delicious chocolate. The chocolatier was founded in 1962 and took off when Chocolatier Rudolf Läderach Jr came up with a brand new way of creating chocolate truffles.

The brand has remained true to its artisan routes and in the shop, you’ll find a selection of hand crafted chocolates and truffles with plenty of samples to go around.

As well as tasting the chocolate, why not don an apron and get stuck in with a workshop where you’ll learn how to create your own chocolate bar. Visit their website to check upcoming dates for public courses.

  • Mon – Fri, 9am – 6.30pm
  • Sat, 8am – 5pm.

7. Wine Tasting at Lavaux Vineyards

tourist information montreux switzerland

About 20 minutes from Montreux lies the Lavaux Vineyards which have existed in their current form for almost a millennium and are classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. The Lavaux area stretches for over 30km and covers 14 villages.

You’ll find several hiking trails through this region which begin at Grandvaux station (change at Lausanne) however most visitors will have wine tasting top of their agenda when visiting a vineyard.

There are over 20 wine cellars that take it in turn to open their doors for so I cannot guarantee which ones will be open at any particular time.

Howevcer, one of the most popular wineries is Les Freres Dubois in Cully. They have a strong heritage and over 35 wines to choose from, but on their wine tasting tour you’ll visit their cellar and sample four wines with a complimentary bottle to take home with you.

Cost (Les Freres Dubois):

  • Adults: CHF 39
  • Children: Free

8. Paragliding Above Lake Geneva

Everyone knows that the best view is from the sky, right?

Well there’s no better way to experience this than paragliding above Lake Geneva. Take off is from Sonchaux which is 1400m high in the mountains behind Chillon Castle. You’ll then soar across Lake Geneva where you’ll see Montreux and the other towns below, before reaching the landing point across the lake in Villeneuve.

Don’t worry, you won’t be alone as it’s a tandem paraglide with a professional.

There are many operators offering paragliding in Montreux but they all seem to use Fly-xperience so you may as well book direct.

  • Adults: CHF 170
  • Student: CHF 150

9. Rochers-de-Naye

tourist information montreux switzerland

Take the cog railway up to Rochers-de-Naye for a stunning panoramic view across the Swiss landscape and a raft of activities for the family including hiking, skiing, the Marmot Paradise wildlife park and an alpine garden.

The summit is around 2,000m above sea level so the ascent takes almost an hour as you pass through quaint villages and never ending fields.

  • Adults: CHF 70
  • Children/Swiss Travel Pass: CHF 35

10. Sel de Bex Salt Mines

tourist information montreux switzerland

About 25 km south of Montreux lies the Sel de Bex Salt Mines which can easily be visited on a half day tour from Montreux. The Salt itself is over 2 million years old but the mines were built in 1684

There’s are underground galleries, shafts and rooms that go on for 50km and once produced 35,000 tons of salt per year.

On a visit, you’ll take a train ride deep into the mine that takes about 10 minutes. Once you’re in the mines you’ll get to have a wonder around and visit the museum. Wouldn’t recommend this if you get claustrophobic.

The tour takes about 2 hours and is in French, but you’ll receive headphones to hear an English translation. Those who want a more in depth experience can book a mine trekking tour. Find instructions for getting there on their website .

  • Adult: CHF 23
  • Children: CHF 14
  • discounts if booked online

11. Take a Scenic Ride on the Golden Pass

tourist information montreux switzerland

Montreux is the starting point for the Golden Pass Scenic Railway which heads into the Swiss Alps, through Interlaken and ends in Lucerne. It’s not one continuous service but three separate services so you’ll need to change. Expect truly breath-taking views as you travel through the mountain scenery through 6 regions and alongside 8 lakes.

A one-way journey to Lucerne could be done in a day, but I recommend breaking it up and stopping at various points along the way.

12. Montreux Casino

tourist information montreux switzerland

If you’re familiar with English rock band Deep Purple’s classic ‘Smoke on the Water’ you’ll know that some of the lyrics go:

‘Frank Zappa and the Mothers, Were at the best place around, But some stupid with a flare gun, Burned the place to the ground’.

This is in fact a refence to the fire at Montreux casino that inspired their hit song and it was burned down with a flare gun in front of them.

Enough about the history. Today, the casino is better known for its slot machines and poker tables, but if you hear Deep Purple playing inside then you’ll know exactly why.

13. Cheese and Chocolate at Gruyeres

tourist information montreux switzerland

The 800 year old hilltop town of Gruyeres is best known for its cheese by the same name that has become a staple in Swiss dishes such as fondue or raclette and is sold across the world. You can learn how they make the cheese and see them in action at La Maison du Gruyère.

Just over in Broc is another well-known food producer, Maison Cailler chocolate factory which has an interactive tour where you’ll learn about the company’s history and how to make great chocolate.

There are enough hiking trails in Gruyeres to keep you busy for weeks ranging from short easy hikes such as the one to Gruyeres castle, to strenuous all day hikes such as Mount Moléson.

Cost (La Maison du Gruyère):

  • Adults: CHF 7

Cost (Maison Cailler chocolate factory):

  • Adults: CHF 15

tourist information montreux switzerland

As with most destinations in Switzerland, one of the most popular things to do in Montreux in winter is to head in to the Alps and ski.

Montreux isn’t the best place in Switzerland to Ski, but it’s not impossible either. Here are some of the main ski destinations near Montreux:

  • Leysin – The 14 ski lifts and 29 slopes at Leysin make up a total 60km of ski tracks. It’s about 40 minutes from Montreux and is the highest of the three resorts listed here.
  • Villars – The Villars, Gryon and Les Diablerets ski resorts are all interlinked creating a huge winter sports area. Slightly further than Leysin, Villars takes about 1 hour to reach from Montreux and has more intermediate-difficult slopes than the others.
  • Rochers-de-Naye – I’ve previously mentioned Rochers-de-Naye as a summer activity, but in Winter it’s geared up for Skiing. It’s the easiest to reach, however, it has the least amount of ski slopes.

15. Montreux Christmas Market

tourist information montreux switzerland

The best activity in Montreux at Christmas is undoubtedly the Christmas market along the edge of Lake Geneva. It’s Switzerland’s largest Christmas markets featuring over 170 stalls ranging from traditional Swiss dishes to locally crafted gifts.

The market that runs along the shore of Lake Geneva forms part of an array of activities taking place around this period to bring festive cheer to the town. Other activities include a medieval weekend market at Chillon castle and Santa’s workshop at Rochers-de-Naye.

16. Ride the Chocolate Train

tourist information montreux switzerland

The chocolate train is much like the trip to Gruyeres I mentioned earlier, only you’ll travel in style in a dedicated first class chocolate train where you’ll be served coffee and chocolate croissants.

You’ll switch to a bus to tour the cheese and chocolate factories as well as some time in Medieval Gruyeres before returning to Montreux.

  • May-September, days vary according to month.
  • Adults: CHF 90
  • Children: CHF 65
  • Swiss Travel Pass: From CHF 55

17. Glacier 3000

Take a cable car up 3,000m above sea level to the Glacier 3000 summit. In Winter this is mainly for skiing, however in summer you can experience the peak walk, a 100m suspension bridge from one mountain peak to another, the only one in the world of its kind.

You can also take the ice express chairlift up to the glacier, ride the snow bus, take a dog sled ride or try the alpine coaster, a 1km fast downhill ride with twists, turns and jumps much like a toboggan.

There are also hiking routes for all abilities from simple treks right up to Via Ferrata.

  • Adult: CHF 80
  • Children/Swiss Travel Pass: CHF 40
  • Extra charge for dog sledding and alpine coaster
  • Daily, 9am-4.30pm
  • Individual activities may be closed, especially in bad weather

18. AquaParc

tourist information montreux switzerland

The best thing to do in Montreux with kids is to visit Aquaparc in Port-Valais. Here you’ll discover a huge waterpark with enormous water slides, a lazy river, wave pool, sauna and a gym to name a few of the activities.

The park is mainly outdoors with some indoor pools too, however the water is heated so it’s still fun even when the sun isn’t shining.

Having said that, I’d still suggest this as a summer activity rather than Winter.

  • Year-round, Daily, 10.30am – 6pm
  • Adult: From CHF 39
  • Child: From CHF 35

19. Water Sports on Lake Geneva

tourist information montreux switzerland

Being situated on Switzerland’s largest lake makes Montreux suitable for numerous water sports.

A company called Nautic Loisirs offer equipment hire including kayaks and paddle boards, right up to motorised boats if you have a licence. Or you can just hire the wet suits if you have your own inflatable stand up paddle board . They also offer water sports lessons where you can learn wake boarding, water skiing, sailing and more.

Costs (classes):

  • Adult: From CHF 90 per hour

Costs (paddle board, Kayak and Pedalo Rental):

  • Adult: From CHF 15 per hour

20. Swiss Games Museum

If you’re looking for the best thing to do in Montreux when it’s raining, then look no further than the Swiss Games Museum over in Vevey.

The museum is a collection of board games, card games and other types from throughout history and across the world.

Most of the exhibits are for viewing only, however there are about a dozen games you can play including some unusual ones. Some of the games don’t have English instructions so you can give it a go or just google the rules.

At first you might mistake the Swiss games museum for a small castle but inside you’ll find a plethora of games from throughout the ages.

  • Tues – Sun, 11 am – 5:30 pm
  • Adults: CHF 9
  • Children: CHF 3

21. Charlie Chaplin World

tourist information montreux switzerland

15 years in the making, Charlie Chaplin World is now open in his former residence over in Vevey. Chaplin moved to Switzerland after US immigration denied his re-entry despite his huge tax contributions.

The museum pays homage to many of his great films with iconic clips and memorabilia. It also features wax sculptures of Chaplin as his characters and some of his closest friends and inspirations including Albert Einstein and Woody Allen.

This museum is a must visit for anyone who is even slightly interested in Charlie Chaplin.

  • Adults: CHF 27
  • Children: CHF 18
  • Spring/Summer, Daily, 9am-6pm
  • Autumn/Winter, Daily, 10am-5pm
  • Check website for exact dates.

22. Montreux Museum

tourist information montreux switzerland

Discover the history of Montreux in the Musee de Montreux, situated a stone’s throw from the train station.

Although it looks small from the outside, you’ll be surprised at the vast range once you enter with exhibits ranging from coins to planes and everything in between.

The exhibits cover the past 200 years and makes the perfect thing to do in Montreux when it rains. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions so you can expect something different each time you visit.

  • Apr – Nov, Daily, 10am – 12noon and 2pm – 5pm
  • Adults: CHF 6

23. The Queen Studio Experience

tourist information montreux switzerland

Whether you’re an avid queen fan or not, this experience is not to be missed. Queen recorded 7 albums in Montreux at their mountain studios which have now been converted in to the Queen Studio Experience.

You’ll see Queen memorabilia including drum sets, costumes and heaps of hand written notes. There’s also an interactive recording desk that allows visitors to remix some of their best tracks.

The experience is free of charge and located just inside the Montreux Casino (you don’t have to go near the gambling tables so completely suitable for kids).

  • Year-round, Daily, 10.30am – 10pm
  • Adults/Children: Free

Tourist’s guide to Montreux, Switzerland- attractions and festivals

Montreux (Switzerland) is one of the most interesting cities in Europe. This is a truly creative place: famous actors and singers often relax here, and local residents organize colorful festivals. On the Internet there are many photos with descriptions of Montreux attractions. The most interesting ones are in our article.

Montreux, Switzerland

General information

Montreux is surrounded by the Alps and Lake Geneva

Montreux is a picturesque resort in southern Switzerland, often called the Swiss Riviera. On the one hand it is surrounded by the Alps, on the other – Lake Geneva. It is famous for its picturesque places, and the large number of festivals that are held here.

23,000 people live in Montreux, but during the tourist season the population of the city increases to 50,000 – 64,000. The inhabitants of the Swiss Riviera speak French, but they are fluent in English and German.

Main attractions and activities in Montreux

Despite the fact that Montreux is a small resort town, there are many attractions.

The promenade along the picturesque coast of Lake Geneva is one of the most popular excursions among tourists. In a short walk you can see almost all the charm of Montreux.

Boardwalk by the lake

Firstly, it is a well-equipped promenade with many benches, well-maintained flowerbeds and small cafes. Secondly, exhibitions of famous sculptors and artists are often held here – works of art are placed right on the waterfront. And, finally, thirdly: the coast of Geneva Montreux is a real botanical garden, because more than 400 species of plants grow here.

Queen Recording Studio Museum

The Queen’s Museum is located 50 meters from the Freddie Mercury Monument in Montreux, in a former recording studio that was built back in 1979. The exposition opened relatively recently – in 2013. Museum workers left everything unchanged here: clothes, computers, musical instruments and notepads with notes – everything looks like Queen was here a minute ago. Also on display are several concert outfits of stars. The highlight of the museum is the ability to create new compositions on your own using the mixing console: adjust voice, bass and drums. There is also the opportunity to listen to the famous songs of the group – in the studio they sound very different!

Faithful Queen fans will appreciate the gift shop next to the museum – in a small shop you can find a lot of souvenirs related to the work of the group.

Golden Pass Line - the famous railway route

Golden Pass Line (191 km) – the famous railway route that runs through the most beautiful places in Switzerland. During a short but busy trip, tourists can see mountain lakes and waterfalls, picturesque villages and green meadows. Many travelers do not recommend driving this entire route in a few hours – it’s better to stretch the pleasure for several days, and make stops in the most interesting places.

GoldenPass Line panoramic window train

There are two trains running on this railway – the first with panoramic windows and the second in retro style (the atmosphere of the 19th century was recreated in the cars: old sofas, richly decorated tables and chairs with carved backs). In order to enjoy the scenery of Switzerland, you should pre-book the best places at the window. By the way, you can buy tickets in Montreux themselves at the underpass of the railway station.

  • Address: rue de la Gare 22, Montreux 1820, Switzerland.
  • Opening hours: 09.00 – 20.00.
  • Cost: 72 francs.

Freddie Mercury Memorial

On the picturesque Montreux promenade, in Place du Marché, a monument to the famous British singer Freddie Mercury is erected. A famous musician stands in his “corporate” pose – with his hand thrown up. This is Montreux’s most popular attraction.

Address: quai de la Rouvenaz 2, Montreux 1820, Switzerland.

The view from the top of Mount Roche de Neu is simply stunning: the Lake Geneva, Valais and even the Alps open up to tourists. Despite the fact that this is a natural attraction, there really is something to do: you can just walk around the surrounding peaks, or you can look into the wildlife park Marmot Paradise or the alpine garden La Rambertia. At the foot of the mountain there are several panoramic restaurants.

Mount Rocher de Ne

Climbing the mountain itself on foot will not work – for this there are special tourist cars that will take tourists to the most interesting places. By the way, the road from the city to Roche de Ne itself is a tourist attraction. This is an old toothed bridge that starts at the foot of the mountain and ends at the top. The train travels very slowly, so you can not only have time to consider the dizzying views from the window, but also capture them in memory. The trip will take about 2 hours. After, at the very top, there will be a stop, and tourists themselves can choose what to do.

  • Tickets can be purchased at the box office in Montreux.
  • Ticket price: 68.40 francs – adults, 34.20 – children and holders of tourist cards.

Lavaux are terraced vineyards leading from Chillon Castle to the shores of Lake Geneva. Unesco listed as a unique geographical and agricultural site. Everyone can visit them – the entrance is free and is not guarded in any way. Vineyards are often used as backgrounds for photo shoots – it is really very beautiful here.

Terraced vineyards Lavo

You can get to the sights by train from Vevey. The final stop is the city of Chebr, known for its tasting cellars.

Address: Lavaux, Montreux 1818, Switzerland.

You can’t come to Switzerland and not taste the famous Swiss chocolate. The Montreux – Bernese Oberland railway line even runs an unusual train named after this sweetness. You can go on a trip either in an old carriage in 1917 in the Empire style, or in modern carriages with huge panoramic windows.

Chocolate Train

During a trip lasting 9 hours, you can see the stunning scenery of Switzerland, and the journey ends in a country of chocolate. Have you ever seen a photo of Swiss Montreux? Almost certainly they were made precisely during such a route.

Chocolate Factory Caller

The final stop is the Caller Chocolate Factory. After completing the main program, it is worth a glimpse into the cheese factory in Gruyeres.

  • Tickets should be booked no later than 2 months before the trip – the route is very popular.
  • Cost: 80 francs – adults, 42 francs – children.

More detailed information with photos about the town of Gruyere and the Chocolate Train is collected in this article .

Casino Montreux

The casino building houses immediately two attractions of the Swiss Montreux – the casino itself and the Queen Studio Museum. There are always many tourists here, and the main reason is the history of this place. Back in 1971, the musical group Deep Purple, seeing how the casino building was lit, wrote a song in one night, which later became a hit and glorified this building.

top things to do in Montreux

Located in the foots of the mesmerising Alps, resting on the shores of Lake Geneva, Montreux has been attracting many impressive visitors throughout history. It comes as no surprise that this is the place where Charlie Chaplin decided to spend 25 years of his life, Queen created a few of their best selling albums, and Lord Byron created a poem about. Here is a list of the top things to do in Montreux, as well as a few tips when travelling here.

If you’re already eager to visit, but don’t know when the right time would be, bear in mind that the the climate in Montreux is quite mild. This makes it a good destination for pretty much any season. I visited Montreux in the end of February, and the temperatures were around 10°C – perfectly fine for those long hours of sightseeing. However, spring seems like the most beautiful season to be there, because everything becomes covered in flowers, and let’s be honest –  everything is better when there are flowers around.

Where to stay in Montreux

During our trip to Montreux, we stayed at the Parc & Lac Hotel , which was a lovely affordable place with a great central location for exploring – just 20m away from Lake Geneva! When we were visiting, all hotels offered a free public transportation card to its visitors, which was the reason we opted for a hotel stay rather than an AirBnb. This should still be in place, but be sure to check this website in case anything has changed.

The Best Things To Do In Montreux, Switzerland

1. visit chillon castle.

The Chillon Castle is one of the most visited places in Switzerland. I am putting it as the number one place to see when in Montreux as it turned out to be the highlight of our Switzerland trip. The fortress dates back to the 13th century and was built on a small rocky island in the lake, offering both natural protection and a strategic position.

Even though the castle is beautiful from the outside, I strongly recommend going inside as well. It took me around 1,5 hours to be able to go through all of the rooms, take pictures in all the pretty spots (which are so many), and stop for a few moments to admire the view. Make sure you don’t miss the very last stop which is the highest tower of the castle. The panorama from there is breathtaking!

Nowadays, the studio offers its visitors a true “Queen” experience free of charge, operating only on a tipping basis. You can see some Freddie Mercury’s stage costumes, handwritten lyrics, old tapes and so much more. Here It Comes: Another Hot Summer in Europe

Extreme heat and other weather challenges are in the forecast this summer, and travel advisers, tourists and local officials are getting prepared.

Outside an ancient Roman structure -- the Colosseum in Rome -- a young woman in light summer clothing pours a bottle of water on a man's neck.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

Europe, the world’s fastest-warming continent, is headed for another scorching summer, meteorologists warn. And travelers, once again, are heading to the hot spots.

Last year, large parts of southern Europe experienced prolonged periods of extreme heat with temperatures reaching 118 degrees and lasting up to two weeks or more. The sweltering conditions upended vacations throughout the summer season as visitors collapsed from heat exhaustion at crowded tourist sites, and wildfires led to evacuations in Greece, Italy and Spain.

“Our computer models are in good agreement that it’s going to be another unusually hot summer, especially during late July through August,” said Todd Crawford, vice president of meteorology at Atmospheric G2 , a weather and climate intelligence firm based in Manchester, N.H. The company expects the magnitude of the heat to be similar to 2022, the hottest summer ever recorded in Europe, with the most anomalous heat projected in the south, in popular countries for travelers like Greece, Croatia and Italy.

Since 1991, Europe has been warming at twice the global average, and 23 of the 30 most severe heat waves in Europe since 1950 have occurred since 2000, with five in the last three years, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said several factors contribute to the continent’s vulnerability, including the proportion of European land in the Arctic — the fastest-warming region on earth — and changes in atmospheric circulation.

Yet despite the forecast and increasing trend of excessive summer heat, demand is still high for destinations where temperatures reached 100 degrees or higher in recent summers. Overall, U.S. demand for travel to Europe has increased since last year, according to the travel site Hopper . Rome, Paris and Athens are among the most searched cities out of billions of annual searches for summer vacations on Kayak and Expedia.

“The destinations are being booked again, and what really characterizes people is how quickly they forget and push back negative experiences,” said Stefan Gössling, a professor who researches tourism and climate change at Linnaeus University in Sweden. “People who were caught in life-threatening situations like the wildfires may reconsider where they travel, but for the broader population, we are not yet seeing a big change in decision-making because of the heat.”

Green spaces and heat officers: Cities adapt

As the summer approaches, popular destinations that were hit hard last year are working on protocols to make residents and tourists safe and more comfortable. In 2021, Athens became the first European city to appoint a chief heat officer to oversee those efforts. One of the first steps was to categorize heat waves by severity, like hurricanes, as an early warning system for the potential impact on human health. It is also naming heat waves to emphasize their potential risks.

“Heat is a silent killer and projections for the coming years show that it will only get worse, so we are redesigning our city and making changes to adapt,” said Elissavet Bargianni, the chief heat officer for Athens. Beyond raising awareness, the city plans to implement additional measures, which include increasing the number of green spaces and creating cool public areas.

For visitors planning to visit Athens this summer, Ms. Bargianni advises using the Extrema Global app that calculates the coolest route for getting from point A to point B according to the current temperature and density of the trees. The city already has several air-conditioned cooling centers that are free.

During last July’s heat wave, the Acropolis was forced to close between midday and the early evening to protect visitors after some of them collapsed from the heat. The ministry of culture could make the same decision this year, Ms. Bargianni said, if the heat is severe.

Heat and tours: Travel advisers get creative

Travel advisers are also factoring heat into flexible itineraries. In cities like Rome, Barcelona, Paris and Athens, they are scheduling sightseeing in the cooler morning and evening hours, and arranging air-conditioned transportation.

“We tend to do activities and tours in the morning, then stop for lunch, and in the mid- to late afternoon you either go back to the hotel to sit by the pool or go to the beach,” said Gary Portuesi, a co-managing partner at Authentic Explorations, a New York-based travel company that specializes in Europe.

If clients insist on taking midday tours, the company will work with local partners to make the experience as comfortable as possible. “If there is a six-hour tour, for example, they will cut it down to four and take them to an air-conditioned gelateria for a break,” Mr. Portuesi said.

It is not only the heat that travel advisers have had to grapple with, but also other unpredictable weather events. Last summer, while some parts of the continent were hot and dry, others were cold and wet. “There was a period during the summer peak when it was hotter in the Dolomites than it was in Sicily,” said Jennifer Schwartz, the Italy-based partner of Authentic Explorations. “The most important aspect of our job is to set expectations about the variables and guide people instead of saying it’s too hot, don’t come.”

Heat insurance?

To help travelers book with more confidence, Sensible Weather, a Los Angeles-based start-up that provides a weather guarantee for vacations and outdoor experiences, has recently added high heat protection to its coverage. When booking through a Sensible partner, travelers will be able to add daily protection and if the temperature exceeds a threshold — usually set between 90 and 100 degrees — they can claim reimbursement. Currently, the insurance is only available in the United States, but, the company said, will gradually be rolled out in Europe and elsewhere.

“The goal of the company is to cover everything that can ruin a trip, and usually it’s rain, but temperature is number two,” said Nick Cavanaugh, the company’s founder who was developing the product while caught in a heat wave in Barcelona last year.

Customers do not need to cancel their trip in order to be reimbursed. Those on package tours are reimbursed for the average daily rate of their entire trip for each day that surpassed the heat threshold. “Our customers can still go on their vacations, but if it’s too hot for some hours of the day and unpleasant to go outside, you can hang out in the air-conditioning and we will reimburse you,” Mr. Cavanaugh said.

Heading to cooler climes

Some travelers who were caught in Europe’s heat waves last summer are seeking cooler destinations this summer in places like Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland. Flight searches for Tromsø, Norway, for example, have increased by 85 percent over 2023, according to Kayak.

Joanna Walker, a 43-year-old recruiter from Boston, was caught in a blistering heat wave with her family in Italy last July and vowed never to return during the summer. She said she had been advised to travel during the shoulder season, but couldn’t because her children were in school.

“We couldn’t even cool off in the pool because there was no shade and the water was hot,” Ms. Walker recalled. “We wanted to see the sights in Florence and have long lunches in the piazzas, but instead we were stuck in our overpriced villas under the air-conditioning.”

This year her family has booked a tour of Norway’s fjords in July, where temperatures linger in the high 60s. “It’s going to be a different vibe to Italy for sure, lots of nature and not as much history, but at least it will be cool enough to experience something.”

Is Switzerland good for families? Is Switzerland safe to travel with kids?

With its visitor-friendly efficiency, tolerant attitudes to breastfeeding in public, generously-stocked pharmacies and unimpeachable safety record, Switzerland is an easy country to travel with children.

And the good news is, whatever you fancy doing, getting to Switzerland , and  getting around Switzerland , is efficient and affordable. All of which means travelling in Switzerland with kids can be an easy, enjoyable experience.

On a practical note, children under the age of 12, and under 150cm in height, will need special booster seats (or front-facing child seats) when travelling by car, including in taxis.

For more general travel tips on how to make the most of family holidays, you might want to read our  practical tips for travelling with kids .

If you’re keen to experience sports and outdoor activities in Switzerland and want to show your kids the ropes (and slopes), dedicated pages on  My Switzerland provide information on family-friendly resorts, breaks, and activities, including winter sports.

In addition, tourist offices can often provide leaflets detailing level walking paths for pushchairs or beach areas by lakes that are specifically set aside for families.

When hiking seems like too much hassle, some of the best scenic train rides in Europe are on hand to wow children of all ages.

Aside from getting active in Switzerland's open air with kids, festivals in Switzerland  are frequent, often fabulous, and invariably family-friendly. Everything from global music gatherings to traditional Alpine folk fairs will almost always include child-oriented activities and events.

In fact, with such a packed calendar, deciding when to go to Switzerland  is no easy task. Though arguably best known as a world-class winter sports destination, Switzerland isn’t short of great things to do in summer .

Graubünden , in the southeastern corner of Switzerland, is the setting for one of the most spectacular rail networks in the world — the Rhätische Bahn.

It’s travelled by the famous Glacier Express that runs from St Moritz and Davos to Chur, and then west over the Alps to Zermatt.

Elsewhere in the region, an old chalet in the former hamlet of Oberrofels, now renamed  Heididorf , has been reborn as “the original Heidi’s House”.

A scenic trail from Heididorf leads up through woodland to “Heidialp” in the mountains.  The path is punctuated by child-friendly information and activities along the way to “Heidi’s Alp Hut” — purportedly Heidi’s grandfather’s house.

When it comes to creating memories of a lifetime, boarding the world’s highest cable car to explore the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise takes some beating. As such, it’s one of the best things to do in Switzerland with kids.

With a spectacular viewing platform, ice palace and cinema lounge, visitors of all ages will be entertained and exhilarated.

What’s more Zermatt and the Matterhorn in the canton of Valais is a great place for little ones to start skiing. Lying in the next-door valley to Zermatt, Saas-Fee comes especially recommended for its blue and red pistes, making it ideal skiing territory for beginners or intermediates.

Home to a chocolate factory and magical, medieval castle, it's little wonder that visiting Gruyères is one of the best things to do in Switzerland with kids.

Just outside Gruyères, kids will be quick to detect luscious scents emanating from the Cailler chocolate factory on the edge of the village of Broc. On arrival, an exhibition explains the history of chocolate before you view the factory.

The climax comes in the Tasting Room, where you’re let loose on tables piled with bite-sized chunks of every Cailler product in unlimited quantities.

Meanwhile, back in Gruyères, the fairy-tale castle is sure to enchant younger travellers.

  • Best for central location: Fleur de Lys . Scenic views and home comforts in the heart of Gruyères.

For all-round family fun throughout the year, the region of Lake Geneva — within which Gruyères lies — comes highly recommended.

A few kilometres around the lakeshore from Chillon, Le Bouveret is a family-friendly holiday village.

Its  Swiss Vapeur Parc miniature railway complex features replica locomotives pulling passengers around 1.5km of track. Aquaparc is just a stroll away — a heated, indoor waterpark complete with multiple flumes, slides, rides and eateries.

Come winter, St-Cergue provides easy downhill skiing for families, and plenty of excellent cross-country routes.

  • Best for central convenience:  Les Négociants, Vevey . A reliable family-run hotel steps from the square.
  • Best for campers:  La Pichette Corseaux . 3km west of Vevey, this lakeside site has top facilities.
  • Best for good-value style:  Villa Toscane, Montreux . A waterfront Art Nouveau creation with family rooms.

Voyage to Europe’s highest train station in Jungfrau

Located in the Jungfrau region at the heart of Switzerland's  Bernese Oberland , Switzerland’s most popular mountain railway excursion is touted under the shoutline “Top of Europe”.  And it has to be said that journeying to the Jungfraujoch really does justify the hype.

From Kleine Scheidegg trains tunnel clean through the Eiger to emerge at the icy Jungfraujoch, just below the Jungfrau summit. This is the highest train station in Europe, and offers an unforgettable experience of the mountains. As such, it’s one of the best things to do in Switzerland with kids.

Best places to stay in the Jungfrau region

  • Best for affordable comfort:  Weisses Kreuz, Interlaken . This central, affordable hotel offers cosy no-frills rooms.
  • Best for campers:  Camping Jungfrau, Lauterbrunnen . This family-oriented site also has six-person bungalows.

One of the main draws of charming Lucerne is the  Verkehrshaus  (Transport Museum) — a vast complex devoted to Swiss engineering that'll keep kids amused all day. This is hands down one of the best things to do in Switzerland with kids who are obsessed with transport.

It’s divided into several large areas, covering road and rail transport, aviation, space, and cableways. Everything is in English, and there are plenty of interactive activities, including driver simulators, flight simulators, and an indoor ski jump.

Kids will also love the on-site planetarium, Swiss Chocolate Adventure ride, and boating lake.

More travel adventures can be enjoyed en route to Mount Pilatus. Rising behind Lucerne, this craggy giant is reached by riding the world's steepest cogwheel railway or cable car.

  • Best for water babies:  Seehotel Kastanienbaum . In a village near the city, this has a private beach and pool.
  • Best for teenagers:  Wilden Mann . This historic hotel occupies townhouses on Old Town lanes.
  • Best for getting back to nature:  Backpackers. This laidback lakeshore hostel has family rooms.

Though known as a business centre,  Zürich , Switzerland’s second biggest city, is a rather good place to take kids.

Being a major travel hub, you might want to spend a few days in the city before heading off to enjoy some of the best outdoor experiences in Switzerland . It has a host of family-friendly museums, with the FIFA Museum sitting top of the league for young football fans.

A fine example of how to make museums accessible to all, it's set over three floors and traces the history of the game, FIFA, and the men’s and women’s World Cup competitions.

Older, geekier lovers of the beautiful game will love the memorabilia — old programmes, boots, balls, shirts and oddities like an unopened bottle of champagne from England’s 1966 World Cup celebrations. You also have the chance to get up close to the World Cup trophy.

Meanwhile, kids can enjoy a range of interactive games, including commentating on a match clip, and re-enacting a celebratory dance from famous players, and playing oversized pinball games that involve kicking a football around obstacles to hit a target.

  • Best for central convenience: Walhalla Hotel . Right by the train station, with large, pleasantly decorated rooms.
  • Best for teenagers:  Pension Furdich . Backing onto a park, this quaint hotel has an ajoining café
  • Best for lakeside living:  Fischers Fritz . Not far from the centre, this offers glamping alongside tent pitches.

Walk on the wild side in Bern

If you’re looking to take a trip that’ll keep kids as happy as adult city-breakers, Bern might be your bag.

While the capital city itself is safe and stunningly beautiful — in part thanks to its UNESCO-designated Old Town — it also offers easy access to  Gurten Park . A favourite Bernese getaway, this hillside beauty spot towers over the city from the south.

The journey from the train station to the summit only takes about half an hour. On top you’ll find a kids’ play area, a summer toboggan track, and a lavish folly of a castle.

The wide expanses of countryside are laced with hiking trails that give views over Bern, out towards the Jura, and across the peaks of the Bernese Oberland. In winter, the hill’s snowy slopes are crowded with sledding families. Come summer, it’s packed with hikers and picnickers.

As well as offering easy access to walks on the wilder side, Bern is a great place for kids to discover their inner artist, with the  Zentrum Paul Klee  boasting a dedicated children’s museum, Creaviva.

  • Best for affordable style:  Hotel Landhaus . The most attractive budget rooms in town.
  • Best for cosy character:  Hotel Marthahaus . A friendly, well-run hotel-pension on a quiet cul-de-sac.
  • Best for budget travellers:  Bern Backpackers/Hotel Glocke . An Old Town gem with family rooms.

Vibrant and jaw-droppingly beautiful — vistas of blue water sparkling in the sun; lakefront promenades bejewelled with flowers — Lausanne  has a whole lot going for it at any time of the year.

But arguably the best time to visit Lausanne is through spring and summer, when it seems like the celebrations just keep coming. And in good news for those traveling to Switzerland with kids, these are all safe and usually feature family-friendly performances.

Throughout the summer the Ouchy waterfront is transformed into an outdoor stage for informal music events, with the  Lausanne Estivale running a more formal, free programme of concerts from mid-June to late September. This is especially blessed with children’s events  — think fun theatre shows and circus performers.

Lausanne’s biggest party is the  Festival de la Cité held in early July. It's more spontaneous than the Montreux Jazz Festival happening at the same time down the road, not least because everything is free and out in the streets.

While in town with kids, don’t miss exploring Lausanne’s  Musée Olympique . Overlooking the lake, it has fascinating displays on the ancient Olympics, the restoration of the games in modern times, and artefacts, including Jesse Owens’ running shoes from the 1936 games in Berlin.

Outside, budding athletes can race each other on the 100m running track.

  • Best for city chic:  Angleterre & Residence . This classy hotel has a pool and family rooms with waterfront views.
  • Best for leafy peace:  Elite . In the centre, Lausanne's best mid-price hotel has family rooms and gardens.
  • Best for campers:  Camping Vidy . Right by the lake, near the Roman museum, this also offers bungalows.

Located in the canton of Ticino , and set on a sweeping curve of Lake Maggiore, Locarno is a subtropical paradise, with tonnes of opportunities for adventure right on its beautiful doorstep.

While teenagers and older children can enjoy the likes of canoeing, water-skiing, canyoning, rafting, paragliding and biking, visitors of all ages can have fun at the local Lido.

It features indoor and outdoor pools, a dedicated children’s pool and waterslides, with a small beach area beside the lake.

Elsewhere, the zip-lines, rope courses and playgrounds of  Lago Maggiore Adventure Park  will burn off plenty of energy. The panoramic views aren't half bad, either.

  • Best for central style:  Hotel America . On a piazza five minutes from Lake Maggiore, this has family rooms.
  • Best for young kids:  Camping Delta . This semi-forested lakeside site has a playground and beach.
  • Best for contemporary comfort:  H4 Hotel Arcadia . A modern four-star with an outdoor pool.
