Johor mulls single border clearance system with Singapore and Batam
JOHOR BAHRU – A single border clearance system between Johor, Singapore and Batam was among matters discussed during a recent meeting with the Indonesian authorities, said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
Datuk Onn Hafiz said he had recently led a delegation from the state government on a working visit to the Riau Islands in Indonesia.
“I am very impressed with Batam’s economic growth of 7.04 per cent in 2023.
“This shows positive economic growth supported by foreign investment, the development of the tourism sector and the upgrading of infrastructure in Batam.
“In addition, various plans were discussed, including seeking cooperation in the single border clearance method between Johor-Singapore-Batam,” he said in a Facebook post.
Mr Onn Hafiz added that other matters discussed include improving the existing infrastructure and ferry services, as well as establishing cooperation in the health sector, between Johor and Batam.
He said: “The state government is confident that this is a strategic move to increase trade and investment connectivity, especially as the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and Special Financial Zone policies are being actively implemented in Johor.”
Iskandar Malaysia Johor Chamber of Commerce and Industry secretary-general Md Salikon Sarpin said having a single border clearance system would encourage more people to travel.
“This can entice tourists and even potential investors to travel between Johor, Singapore and Batam to seek new business opportunities, which can develop our own economy.
“With Singapore and Indonesia having new leaders, I believe this matter should be discussed further when Malaysia hosts the Asean summit next year,” he added.
Meanwhile, Johor Tourist Guides Association chairman Jimmy Leong said he was optimistic that a single border clearance system would boost state tourism.
“Indonesia offers a big market that we should tap. Both countries share similar culture, language and even food, which makes it easier for us to attract them to visit Johor.
“We already have Indonesians coming over for medical tourism as the medical service here is the best,” he said, adding that improvement should be made on increasing connectivity between Johor and Batam. THE STAR/ ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Kelantan to propose Guillemard Bridge as World Heritage site

Cornering Muslim tourism
Holistic approach needed to capture growing muslim tourist market, says tourism sec-gen, bolstering sports tourism ahead of visit johor year 2026.
TANAH MERAH: The Kelantan government plans to propose the Guillemard Railway Bridge, constructed in 1920 over Sungai Kusial, for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage status.
State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Kamarudin Md Noor said the proposal would be submitted to the National Heritage Department soon.
He said the bridge, significant for its post-World War II history, will turn 100 years old in July 2024.
"The bridge will become a key tourist attraction in Kelantan, and realising this goal will require cooperation from various parties and agencies, both from the state and federal governments," he told Bernama on Tuesday (June 4).
Kamarudin said the bridge is owned by the Railway Assets Corporation, and cooperation is needed to make it a world historical heritage site.
"Before its declaration as a world-historical heritage site, we also need to improve the surrounding infrastructure and hold a centennial celebration to mark the occasion," he said.
Meanwhile, Gual Ipoh assemblyman Bahari Mohd Noor said the railway bridge could be lifted as a heritage tourism icon in Kelantan because of its unique history.
Tebing Tinggi sub-district village chief Muhamad Rafiq Umardin, who shares his sentiment, said that in the 1980s, the bridge was the only route to connect villagers travelling between Machang, Kuala Krai, and outside Kelantan, thus making this village a town centre for Tanah Merah.
"Following the Tanah Merah-Machang highway and bridge construction in this state, the area is now 'dead' and forgotten.
"Now, with the efforts of various parties, including the villagers, the area has been revived and redeveloped as a tourism product," he said, adding that facilities such as sales kiosks, footpaths, public toilets and playgrounds are currently being built.
The 609.6m truss is Malaysia's longest railway bridge and is still used by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad. – Bernama
