What travelers say about their tours of the United States

Travel tips for usa tours.

While we could list quite a number things to see on tour in the United States, here are our top picks:

  • The Grand Canyon  in Arizona, one of America’s most-visited national parks, for colorful hikes
  • New York City and Washington, D.C. , for the iconic American experience
  • Hawaii , for beautiful beaches, spectacular sunsets, and a unique culture
  • Zion National Park  in Utah, for canyons, rivers, and incredible views

You don’t have to leave the U.S. to go on a memorable vacation. One of the best benefits of our United States tours is that you can see beautiful sights right in your proverbial backyard. You won’t have to worry about long flights, exchanging currencies, or language barriers. Plus, you can learn more about the places your ancestors may have traveled or lived, as well as build a deeper connection to the country you call home.

The best time to travel in the U.S. depends on where you’re going and what you’re hoping to do.

Spring:  Consider  U.S. National Parks Adventure: A Week in the Southwest  for outdoor hiking and sightseeing when it’s not too hot outside.

Summer : Visit  Denali National Park  in Alaska for some of the most majestic landscapes and wildlife sightings when it’s warmer.

Fall:  Visit  Vermont and Massachusetts  for stunning views of fall foliage and colonial history, or go on our  Albuquerque Balloon Festival & U.S. National Parks  tour for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What to pack for USA tours depends on where in the country you go and what you are hoping to do. If you are going to  Nashville and New Orleans , you’ll want to bring a lot of light layers to keep comfortable in the heat and humidity. If you’re going to  Alaska , on the other hand, you’ll want to bring a lot of heavy layers to keep warm in the cold. All of our tours include custom packing suggestions, so check the clothing and packing tips in the tour you love.

Andrew Gerrand 4 October 2011

We are excited to announce A Tour of Go , a guided tour of the Go programming language you can run from your browser.

The tour is hands-on, demonstrating the language through code samples that you can modify, compile, and run from the tour itself. (The technology behind the Go Playground does the work.)

The tour has four sections. The first section covers basic syntax and data structures; the second discusses methods and interfaces; the third is about Generics; and the fourth introduces Go’s concurrency primitives. Each section concludes with a few exercises so you can practice what you’ve learned.

So, what are you waiting for? Get started now!

PGA Tour-LIV Golf Timeline: One year has passed and golf fans still are waiting for a deal

tour tour go

It was one of those news drops all golf fans never will forget.

June 6, 2023: The PGA Tour and LIV Golf announce a "framework agreement" to merge business entities after weeks of secret negotiations.

The PGA Tour, whose roots go back more than a century, and LIV Golf, the upstart league launched in June 2021 with tour antagonist Greg Norman as its face and financed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, forming an alliance?

This cannot be happening.

After two years of player poaching, lawsuits, nasty insults from both sides and talk of Saudi Arabia's atrocious human rights violations, the vision of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan side-by-side on a CNBC set detailing how the rival leagues will combine commercial businesses and rights into a new for-profit company, and drop all lawsuits, truly was surreal.

How has that gone?

At first, we were told that the "merger" — later reframed as an "agreement" — would be finalized by Dec. 31 and the PIF would be writing a very large check (somewhere between $1 billion and $2 billion) to boost PGA Tour Enterprises.  But New Year's Eve came and went without a deal, and now, one year later, we appear no closer than we were six months ago.

And after a brief cease-fire, some members, from both sides, resumed taking shots at each other, and LIV Golf, which has headquarters in West Palm Beach, went back to poaching PGA Tour stars.

"It's messy, and it has been and it seems to get messier every week," Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America, said at the PGA Championship. "I don't think the game is big enough for two tours like that, and I think we are diluting the game in a way that is not healthy.

"I hope there's urgency because I do think it's doing damage to the tour, to the game. … I just don't think it's a healthy situation right now."

Here is a timeline of the ebbs and flows of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf when it comes to a possible merger:

If you can't beat them, join them

While surprised that everything came together so quickly, Rory McIlroy said the PGA Tour’s partnership with the PIF ultimately will be good for the game. Speaking the week the agreement was announced, McIlroy said much of it has been mischaracterized and it should not be viewed as a merger with LIV Golf.

“LIV has nothing to do with this," he said. "It’s the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and the Public Investment Fund that are basically partnering to create a new company. That’s where I was a little frustrated. All I’ve wanted to do was protect the future of the PGA Tour and protect the aspirational nature of what the PGA Tour stands for. I think this does this.

"If you look at the structure, this new company sits above everything else. Jay on top of that. Technically, anyone involved with LIV would answer to Jay. The PIF was going to keep spending money in golf. At least the PGA Tour controls how that money is spent. You’re dealing with one of the biggest sovereign wealth funds in the world. Would you rather fight against or have them as a partner?"

Greg Norman's message to staff

Although not involved in the negotiations, LIV's chief executive and commissioner Norman, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, had a positive message for the staff. Norman, who was left out of the negotiations and not mentioned in any of the news releases associated with the agreement, told more than 100 people on a 30-minute call that LIV will see no operational changes and that work is already being done on a 2025 schedule.

“The spigot is now wide open for commercial sponsorships, blue-chip companies, TV networks," he said. "LIV is and will continue to be a standalone enterprise. Our business model will not change. We changed history and we’re not going anywhere."

Players losing trust in Monahan

The main topic of conversation at the U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club was the announcement the previous week. Some players were open about expressing their anger and lack of trust in the tour and Monahan.

"I think it gets to a point where you want to have faith in management, and I want to have faith that this is the best thing for all of us, but it's clear that that's not the consensus," Jon Rahm said. "I think the general feeling is that a lot of people feel a bit of betrayal from management."

Those words were prophetic coming from a man who, six months later, became the biggest name to defect from the PGA Tour.

Agreement dissected on Capitol Hill

About a month after the agreement, drama played out on Capitol Hill with tour COO Ron Price and policy board independent director Jimmy Dunne, of North Palm Beach, testifying at a Senate investigations subcommittee hearing.

They were grilled by a bipartisan committee that was concerned about antitrust violations. Aside from politicians attempting to bully Price and Dunne or just looking for air time, one of the more interesting revelations was the PIF proposing Tiger Woods and McIlroy being granted ownership of LIV Golf franchises. This idea was shot down by the PGA Tour.

Tiger getting involved

Before joining the PGA Tour policy board on Aug. 1, Woods led a group of more than 40 players in signing a list of demands of Monahan. The move was made to reestablish control of the PGA Tour after players heard about Monahan's secretive meetings with the PIF.

Woods became the sixth player director on the policy board, giving players more say in any final decisions.

Monahan regrets agreement rollout

Speaking for the first time since taking a medical leave of absence one week after the deal was announced because of anxiety over the deal, Monahan took responsibility for the awkward rollout of the framework agreement, saying there was a lot of misinformation leading to distrust.

"That's on me," he said.

“My biggest regret was not being more patient on the night of June 5, moving to make this announcement the next day."

Norman confident about LIV's future

In October, Norman spoke publicly for the first time since the agreement. He was at LIV's final event of the season at Doral.

Norman was upbeat and confident his league was on the upswing and promised LIV was here to stay. As far as his future … when asked about Price's comment at July's Senate subcommittee hearing that Norman is "out of a job" if a deal is reached, Norman shrugged.

"I knew it wasn't true," he said. "There's so much white noise floating around out there that I actually paid zero attention to.

"Sitting in this seat today, I know every step I've made has been for the right reasons. Right reasons for the game of golf. … So I was never in any fear of anybody saying anything or any animus against me or anything like that. Because the business model works."

LIV releases most of 2024 schedule

Soon after the conclusion of the 2023 season, LIV made it official that it was moving forward without interruption. Despite the ongoing negotiations, it announced most of its 2024 schedule, which included seven domestic and seven international events.

The original schedule did not include sites for the final two events: the individual and team championships. Those later were announced as Chicago and Dallas, respectively.

Rahm proves he has a price

Six months after the framework agreement, Rahm announced on Fox News: "I have officially joined LIV Golf." He was wearing an LIV letterman's jacket.

The Spaniard and No. 3 golfer in the world clearly is LIV's biggest and most important addition since its launch, sending the message, "We are still here, we are not going anywhere." And for LIV, that was worth the reported $550 million Rahm will receive, including bonuses.

The man who once refuted all LIV rumors by saying $400 million would not change his lifestyle proved he had a price after all.

Woods stands firm on deadline

Despite reports negotiations were dragging and Dec. 31 would come and go without a deal, Woods remained optimistic, right to the end.

Speaking in December from the PNC Championship in Orlando where he teamed with his son, Charlie, Tiger insisted nothing has changed when it comes to the deadline.

"As of right now, that is our time frame and our deadline," he said. "That was set forth back in early June. And that hasn't changed."

Nothing drops on New Year's Eve

Like the ball in Times Square, the PGA Tour and PIF were hoping to drop an announcement that would put an end to golf's civil war.

The year came and went and the only announcement was that the sides were prepared to continue negotiating.

PGA Tour finds major investor in SSG

The long-awaited deal between the PGA Tour and Strategic Sports Group was announced in late January. The SSG, a collective of marquee professional sports franchise owners headed by Fenway Sports Group, is pumping $3 billion into the tour. That included an initial investment of $1.5 billion into the launch of a commercial venture, PGA Tour Enterprises.

That makes SSG the tour's major financial partner, which had some, like Woods, now hinting maybe the tour no longer needed PIF's money.

"The monies that they have come to the table with, and what we initially had agreed to in the framework agreement, those are all the same numbers," Woods said about the SSG investment.

Tyrrell Hatton follows Rahm to LIV

LIV's strong offseason continued with the long-awaited signing of England's Tyrrell Hatton . The 16th-ranked golfer in the world joined in February, just before LIV's first event of the year, in Mexico. Hatton joined Rahm's team, confirming LIV would be adding a 13th team.

Hatton's signing came after Germany's Adrian Meronk, No. 39 in the world, joined LIV.

Monahan offers little at Players

Monahan's much-anticipated state of the game address from The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach in March lacked substance. The commissioner offered very little, other than confirming he recently met with Al-Rumayyan and talks are "accelerating."

While McIlroy continued to believe in Monahan's leadership and a deal being finalized — that later eroded, as we will see — Xander Schauffele was not so sure. "I would say in my book he's got a long way to go to gain the trust of the membership," Schauffele said.

And world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler placed the blame for golf's fractured state squarely on those who joined LIV.

"If the fans are upset, then look at the guys that left," Scheffler said. "We had a tour, we were all together, and the people that left are no longer here. At the end of the day, that's where the splintering comes from."

More false hope after Bahamas meeting

Members of the PGA Tour Enterprises board, including Monahan and all six player directors — Woods, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati — met with Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas soon after the Players Championship.

Monahan called the meeting "constructive." Woods said. "We're headed in the right direction."

LIV players: Deal needed to save sport

LIV golfers weighed in on the negotiations from the event at Doral with Bryson DeChambeau saying there needs to be more of a sense of urgency.

"The only answer is for us to somehow come together in some sort of terms where it makes sense and for us to be playing all again in somewhat of the same boat," DeChambeau said. "And it needs to happen fast. It's not a two-year thing. Like it needs to happen quicker rather than later just for the good of the sport. Too many people are losing interest."

LIV looking to buy golf courses

Norman revealed in May that LIV Golf has thought about owning all its golf courses with each team having a home venue on which to host an event.

"And now you can build out around that," Norman told Bloomberg News. "It’s not just a golf course. You bring in education, hospitality, real estate, merchandise, management, and all these other different opportunities that the game of golf has to deliver to a community or to a region. We are going to be doing that.”

Jimmy Dunne resigns from PGA Tour policy board

Dunne, one of the architects of the framework agreement, resigned from the tour’s policy board the week of the PGA Championship. The North Palm Beach resident and president of Seminole Golf Club said since helping negotiate the agreement, "no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF, I feel like my role is utterly superfluous."

Woods said the amount of work and dedication Dunne put into the board and into the PGA Tour has been "incredible."

McIlroy offered a grim outlook on the negotiations with Dunne no longer involved.

"I would say my confidence level on something getting done before last week was, you know, as low as it had been," McIlroy said. "And then with this news of Jimmy resigning and knowing the relationship he has with the other side, and how much warmth there is from the other side, it's concerning."

One year later and still no deal

A year has passed since that stunning announcement of a framework agreement and about six months since the deadline to turn that into a final deal.

And still, nothing.

But are we getting closer? According to The New York Times, possibly. Maybe?

More: Strong list of LIV, PGA Tour golfers attempting to qualify for U.S. Open at Bear's Club

The Times recently reported that negotiations between the PGA Tour and the PIF not only are very much alive but term sheets have been exchanged.

But it also added a deal is far from certain with the future of LIV Golf still to be decided.

And so we wait.

Family says PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray died by suicide

The parents of professional golfer Grayson Murray on Sunday said the two-time PGA Tour winner died by suicide Saturday morning.

"We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone," Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement. "It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare.

"... Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

Grayson Murray, 30, withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial after the 16th hole of Friday's second round in Fort Worth, Texas. The PGA Tour cited the reason as illness.

"We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents said in their statement. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and -- it seems -- by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.

"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else."

Many players competing at Colonial on Sunday wore black-and-red pins on their caps in honor of Murray. Those are the colors of the Carolina Hurricanes , his favorite NHL team.

"Obviously it was pretty difficult to come play golf," said Scottie Scheffler , who tied for second at Colonial. "But like his parents said, he would have wanted the tournament to continue."

Murray spoke about alcohol and mental health in the past, saying he used to drink during tournament weeks as a rookie because he knew he had talent and believed he was invincible. He made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting a wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.

"It took me a long time to get to this point," Murray said in January. "That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

He also won the Barbasol Championship as a 22-year-old PGA Tour rookie in 2017.

Murray, who was No. 58 in the world ranking, was coming off a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship last week at Valhalla. He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and was in the field for next month's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Murray, who grew up in North Carolina, was among the most talented juniors in the country. He won the prestigious Junior World championship in San Diego three straight years and earned the Arnold Palmer Scholarship at Wake Forest.

His first coach was Ted Kiegiel in North Carolina, who like so many others was devastated.

"Words cannot express the tragedy of this moment," Kiegiel said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. "Grayson came from something that was ordinary and made it EXTRAORDINARY. ... He burned bright for the 30 years he gave us."

Murray wound up going to three colleges, lastly at Arizona State.

Murray said when he won the Sony Open in January that he had been sober for eight months, was engaged to be married and believed his best golf was ahead of him. He was appointed to the PGA Tour's 16-member player advisory council the same month.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, who flew to Texas on Saturday, said grief counselors were on site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event.

"To be in the locker room, to see the devastation on the faces of every player that's coming in, it's really difficult to see. And really just profound," Monahan said during the CBS broadcast Saturday.

"Grayson was a remarkable player on the PGA Tour, but he was a very courageous man, as well. And I've always loved that about him, and I know that the locker room is filled with people that really will take that away when they think about Grayson."

Grayson Murray, Winner of Two PGA Tour Titles, Dies at 30

Murray, who was outspoken about his depression and alcohol abuse, had begun a comeback after several volatile years, winning this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii.

Grayson Murray, the professional golfer who won two PGA Tour titles and was outspoken about his battles with depression and alcohol, died on Saturday. He was 30.

His death was confirmed in a statement on Saturday by the PGA Tour. He died by suicide, according to a PGA Tour statement that was released on Sunday on behalf of his parents.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” the statement said. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world.”

After a successful 40-foot putt to win the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, Murray rose to 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking, a career high. The event marked the height of a comeback run after several volatile years as Murray struggled with his mental health.

In a news conference after winning the Sony Open, Murray said that for a time he would drink during tournament weeks.

“Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year, but also feeling like I was invincible,” he said. “I’m a different man now, and I would not be in this position right now, today, if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.”

He added that he had attended rehabilitation for a month. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues,” he said. Murray had failed to gain PGA Tour status for several months last year after a series of off-course events mirrored a decline in his play.

An alcohol-related incident at a hotel bar in Hawaii in 2021 led to his suspension from the PGA Tour. Afterward, he posted to social media.

“Why was I drunk?” he wrote, adding that he was an “alcoholic that hates everything to do with the PGA Tour life and that’s my scapegoat.”

The golfer Phil Mickelson, who has struggled with a gambling addiction , responded at the time on social media , saying “If I can help in any way I’d be happy to.”

This year, Murray played well enough to qualify for the Masters Tournament and P.G.A. Championship. On Friday, he withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness.

Grayson Murray was born on Oct. 1, 1993, in Raleigh, N.C., according to an ESPN biography. Mr. Murray is survived by his parents, Eric and Terry, and his brother, Cameron, and sister, Erica, according to the statement.

He attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State Universities, and at 16 he became the second-youngest player to enter the Korn Ferry Tour, according to the PGA Tour.

He continued to gain prominence, playing in the U.S. Open at the age of 19 and clinching a win at the 2017 Barbasol Championship, sinking a five-foot putt for a one-stroke victory.

After losing his PGA Tour card for the 2023 season, and following an angry outburst directed at Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour’s commissioner, he seemed to have found his swing again. He won two Korn Ferry Tour tournaments last year, regaining his PGA Tour eligibility, and finished in the top 10 at two events.

Because of an editing error, the headline on an earlier version of this article misstated the winning record of Grayson Murray. He won two PGA Tour titles, not tours.

Already-arranged group tours to china to go ahead.

tour tour go

The government would allow group tours to China to proceed after tomorrow if they have already been arranged, the Executive Yuan said yesterday, after it reversed a previous decision to reopen Taiwan to cross-strait tour groups.

“The Ministry of Transportation and Communications previously allowed group tours to China to continue until May 31, and ordered those that were scheduled to leave on June 1 and afterward to be canceled or merged with groups leaving before that date,” Executive Yuan spokesman Chen Shi-kai (陳世凱) told a news conference after a Cabinet meeting.

However, Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) took into consideration that there are still a lot of tour groups that had been planned and were not able to visit China before today, Chen said.

“To protect travelers and travel agencies, the government would allow tours to continue if they were arranged before the ban takes effect on Saturday,” he added.

The government is to periodically review the policy to see if any changes are necessary, he said.

Cho reiterated in the Cabinet meeting the government’s position of welcoming Chinese tourists, Chen said.

“The premier hopes that cross-strait tourism could be resumed in an equitable manner, and that China would reciprocate by showing goodwill and contributing to peace across the Taiwan Strait,” Chen said.

The ministry in November last year unilaterally announced that the ban on group tours to China would be lifted on March 1, and asked China to reciprocate by allowing Chinese tour groups to visit Taiwan.

However, after President William Lai (賴清德) was elected in January, Nauru severed ties with Taipei and established diplomatic relations with China.

In February, China announced that it would unilaterally activate the use of its self-designated M503, W122 and W123 flight routes.

Taipei on Feb. 7 announced that the group tour ban would be implemented again from next month.

Last month, the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced that it would allow residents from China’s Fujian Province to visit Lienchiang County, and later allow them to travel to Taiwan proper once express ferry services between Fujian’s Pingtan County and Taiwan proper resume.

Taiwan allows individual travelers to visit China, while China bans individuals and group tours from traveling to Taiwan.

About 110,000 Taiwanese on group tours have visited China since March, Mainland Affairs Council Deputy Minister Lee Li-jane (李麗珍) told the news conference.

About 20,000 more are scheduled to visit next month, Lee said.

While at least 130,000 Taiwanese on group tours are expected to visit China this year, no Chinese tour groups have arrived in Taiwan so far, Lee said.

The government has shown goodwill by lifting its ban on group tours to China, especially considering that Beijing launched large-scale military exercises around Taiwan soon after Lai’s inauguration on Monday last week and prevented Taiwan from participating in the World Health Assembly (WHA) this year, she said.

Although travel agencies in Fujian are scheduled to travel to Lienchiang on June 10 to scout potential tour routes, Lee said that China should lift all restrictions, which would facilitate healthy and equitable cross-strait tourism.

There was already a tourism deficit between Taiwan and China prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tourism Administration Director-General Chou Yung-hui (周永暉) said.

About 4.04 million Taiwanese tourists visited China in 2019, while only 2.71 million Chinese tourists traveled to Taiwan, Chou said.

Travel Quality Assurance Association spokesman Ringo Lee (李奇嶽) said the group tour ban is still in place, even though the government is allowing prearranged tours to proceed next month.

“Travel agents hope that the ban would be lifted. Our businesses would suffer if we cannot advertise tours to China,” he said. “It is like we are entitled to sit at the table and eat, but we are now forced to do so by hiding in the corners.”

Travel agents are closely watching whether China keeps its promise by allowing tourists from Fujian to visit Lienchiang, and whether ferry services between Pingtan and Taiwan proper would be resumed, he added.

With sister battling tumor, Davis Riley breaks through at Charles Schwab Challenge

Change Text Size

FORT WORTH, Texas – A week ago, Davis Riley wasn’t sure he could concentrate on a swing thought, let alone play winning golf.

His older sister, Caroline, had suffered a seizure at work. Doctors found a tumor and recommended surgery right away. That happened Wednesday in New York.

Riley feared the worst, of course. The wait was unbearable. His eyes glistened Sunday afternoon as he discussed Caroline in – of all places – the champion’s press conference at the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club. Pathology tests revealed a benign growth, the winner said.

The story of how Riley went from doubting his appearance at Colonial to winning it has many subplots. There was the disappointing season of seven missed cuts in 14 starts, with only one top 25. There was the reunion with a former swing coach, who helped Riley focus on what he could control: his comportment and attitude in competition. There was the cautious assurance that his sister would recover.

It all ended Sunday with a tartan jacket and a trophy.

Riley won his first individual tournament in 89 starts on the PGA TOUR with a gutty, gritty 14-under-par score (266) at historic Colonial. He shot 66-64-66-70.

He played the final round with a sense of acceptance and calm, surprising perhaps given the weight of his sister’s well-being on his mind. He never lost control.

Davis Riley’s Round 4 winning highlights from Charles Schwab

A feisty wind waved the ancient pecans on old Colonial. The greens firmed. The sun was boiling. The Bermudagrass rough taunted players who missed the narrow corridors of fairway. The course played Sunday to an average score of more than 72 strokes, by far the highest of the week.

Only Collin Morikawa (68-69-67-68, solo fourth) played all four rounds under par.

Only Riley kept damage to a minimum. He made just seven bogeys through four rounds. He led the field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green at 11.4, ranked second in Approach the Green (7.9) and fourth in Putting, with 5.9. It was even, steady golf for the 27-year-old from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, who starred at Alabama with fellow TOUR players Lee Hodges and Robby Shelton.

“I just tried to wear out the fairways and greens and try to get a couple opportunities and roll some good putts and if they went in, great,” said Riley, who now lives in the Dallas area and plays out of Maridoe Golf Club. “If not, I knew pars were good coming in.”

Scottie Scheffler, who started four shots behind in second place, could never make the move many expected of the No. 1 player in the world. An opening-round 72 included two balls in the pond on the par-3 13th – the first his wind-flattened tee shot, the second one thrown in disgust after he putted out for a triple-bogey 6. After coasting through the next 44 holes without a score-harming error and firing a thrilling 63 in the third round, Scheffler made bogey on the fourth and the fifth, missing both greens.

“As far as today goes, I just wasn't able to put as much pressure as I would have hoped to put on Davis early in the round and he just kind of cruised all day,” Scheffler said.

Keegan Bradley rallied briefly. He finished with a 3-under 67 and tied for second with Scheffler at 9-under. Morikawa took fourth alone at 8-under.

“Just a grind,” Morikawa said of the week.

Riley leaned on his efforts last week with his swing coach in Tennessee. The two of them got together again after a brief annulment and tightened Riley’s concentration on targets. They established a better routine for holding images through the swing and created novel ways to deal with the stress of being in contention. The work … worked.

Davis Riley’s interview after winning Charles Schwab

“So proud,” texted Jay Seawell, his former head coach at Alabama. “He has been through so much lately but never lost his belief.”

His exquisite feel on and near the green Saturday saved his lead – and even his tournament. Riley found only six fairways. He hit 11 greens. But he was a nifty 5-of-7 in scrambling in the third round and took only 26 putts. It was a round that could’ve gotten away from him. Instead, he shot 66.

“It says a lot about his short game, to be honest,” said Hodges, who played two years at Alabama with Riley.

What was less visible was the work Riley started the week of THE PLAYERS Championship with his coach, Jeff Smith. Riley was moving the club too far inside on the takeaway, shutting the face early. Smith has been helping Riley to “get the starting lines tighter and very little curve on the ball,” Smith wrote in a text Sunday.

They also spent a lot of time last week on the mental approach, wrote Smith, the director of instruction at Spring Creek Ranch in the Memphis suburb of Collierville, Tennessee. They sharpened Riley’s focus on his target. They developed routines they called “neuro-hacks” to slow down Riley under pressure.

“Almost like hitting the reset button after a poor outcome,” Smith wrote. “He put on a clinic doing this (Saturday) in some tough spots.”

The clinic continued Sunday from more tough spots. It was a hot, gusty afternoon on the Trinity River. Riley failed to birdie the par-5 first, playing a half-stroke under par as the easiest hole on the course. He then made bogey on the short par-4 second, the third-easiest. Playing alongside, Scheffler made par.

“I tried to treat today as if we both started tied and I just tried to win the day,” Riley said.

He did. Riley steadied the round with a birdie on the par-3 fourth. Scheffler bogeyed. Riley played even-par golf until the 15th, when he drove into a deep fairway bunker and wedged from 37 yards through the green. He made bogey there, by which time Scheffler was too far back to contend and Bradley was on the last hole, three shots behind at 10 under. Riley had a seven-shot lead after his birdie on the par-5 11th. Now it was three with three holes to play.

Bradley bogeyed the 18th. A short while later, Riley stuffed his 161-yard approach on the par-4 17th to less than 4 feet – a closing statement. He holed the birdie.

“It's been a slower start to the year than I've been wanting and obviously this helps a lot, catapulting me in the right direction,” Riley said.

The first player to greet him was Nick Hardy, his partner in the team-format Zurich Classic of New Orleans. They won the tournament last year – the first PGA TOUR titles for both players, an indelible moment in their young careers. Hardy saw the birdie on 17 on a television in the Colonial clubhouse. He went outside, watched the winning putt and gave his longtime friend – their competitive history dates to the AJGA – a quick, tight hug.

“Davis’ game has clearly been trending to me for a while,” Hardy said. “It’s just fun to see it pay off.”

The fun is just beginning. With his win, Riley captured 500 FedExCup points, moving him to 55th in the rankings. He can slow down with the confidence of a champion. He can continue to sharpen his imagery without the pressure of winning his first individual event. He can refine the neuro-hacks.

“I feel like physically I've had it going for a little bit and I feel like kind of just staying in my own lane and kind of controlling what's going on upstairs has been a huge help,” Riley said.

Everything was thrown at him. A profound health scare. A firm course with wind. A pairing with the best player in the world. A chance to win his first stroke-play TOUR title.

Riley controlled what he could.

He said he told his caddie: “I want to get lost in the process of it. I want to just be so focused on what I'm doing, the process I'm going through, picking targets, being really detail-oriented. I just wanted to get lost in that and then show up on 16 and 17 and be right where I wanted to be.”

The birdie on 17 put him five ahead. A closing par from the greenside bunker made him a champion. His wife Alexandra was there to see it all.

She can tell Caroline and his parents what it was like to see Riley right where he wanted to be.

Tickets for the Blackhawks-Blues 2024 Winter Classic tickets to go on sale next month

Tickets for the Blackhawks-Blues 2024 Winter Classic tickets to go on sale next month originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The NHL announced that tickets to the 2024 Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues will go on sale to the public next month.

In February, the Blackhawks announced they will host the franchise's seventh outdoor game at the iconic Wrigley Field . The game will mark the second time the Blackhawks have hosted the Winter Classic at Wrigley.

This will also be the Blackhawks' and Blues' second Winter Classic matchup. The first time was in 2017 at St. Louis’ Busch Stadium , and the Blues won that game.

Tickets will go on sale Friday, June 14, at 10 a.m., according to the league. Fans can sign up for alerts via the Blackhawks' website.

While the game is usually played on New Year's Day, the NHL has announced the game won’t be played in its usual New Year’s Day slot. In April, it was announced that the game will take place on Dec. 31, 2024, with puck drop set for 4 p.m. Central time.

The Blackhawks have played in a league-high six outdoor games, posting a record of 1-5. Their lone win came in the 2014 Stadium Series game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Soldier Field. In addition to their loss at Busch Stadium against the Blues, they also have recorded losses at Wrigley Field (2009), Nationals Park (2015), TCF Bank Stadium (2016), and Notre Dame Stadium (2019).

The NHL will also host an outdoor game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, with the Red Wings and Blue Jackets battling at the home of the Ohio State University football team.
