What to pack for Cambodia

People packing for a tour

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Comfortable sandals or shoes

Whether you’re on a Cambodia escorted tour or passing through on your own, there is no doubt you will find yourself walking for hours each day, so comfortable walking shoes are a must have for your packing list.

Conservative clothing

If you’re not on a Cambodia tour, you may not be advised that the local Cambodians dress conservatively. In order to respect their culture, avoid revealing or extravagant items of clothing and dress modestly.

Phnom Penh is exactly what you’d expect of a capital city in Asia, alive with energy and noise at all hours. Earplugs are an essential in your Cambodia vacation pack to make sure you get a good night’s rest.

Lightweight clothing

Cambodia doesn’t get cold, with year-round temperatures ranging from warm to hot. Pack lightweight and absorbent clothing like linen or very fine cotton. It’s ideal for days of adventuring in this part of the world.

Cambodia boasts a warm and tropical climate, but a distinct wet and dry season set the calendar thanks to its proximity to the equator. Bring a raincoat if your trip coincides with the annual down pour.

Private Tours & Luxury Holiday In Cambodia

Cambodia’s history comprises both the greatest aesthetic feats and the most heinous crimes of humanity since the country is best known for both the massive temples of Angkor Wat and the violent Khmer Rouge days of the 1970s and later civil war.

Visitors are usually drawn to Cambodia by its rich history, but there is much more to see in this Southeast Asian country than just the temples of Siem Reap. Its charm extends far beyond the country’s many temples. The locals genuinely enjoy the company of tourists, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly to all visitors. Whether you’re planning to stay in one of the many luxurious eco-lodges by the forest edge or explore the bustling outdoor markets, you’ll always feel at home in this welcoming city known for its friendly locals, delicious seafood, and warm hospitality.

Sun worshippers can’t resist the allure of the coast’s white sand beaches in Cambodia. The metropolis of Phnom Penh, which is Cambodia’s bustling capital, immerses visitors in the frantic pulse of modern Cambodian city life, while the countryside, which is covered in thick jungle, caters to the more daring travellers.

Whether you prefer to walk through the paths of the Khmers, venture into wilder terrains, get lost in the streets of Siem Reap, or explore the temples of Angkor Wat, we can plan a multi-day trip for you that takes you across the country’s mountainous regions, bustling metropolises, as well as its rural heartlands. Let us plan your dream vacation in Cambodia with a custom-designed itinerary.

Highlights Of Cambodia

These are some of the places we would choose for our holiday in Cambodia. If you don’t see your desired attraction here, just know that we can still plan it for you.

Private Tours & Luxury Holiday In Cambodia

The second largest city in Cambodia, Siem Reap, is bursting at the seams with everything from chic hotels, wine and dining establishments serving a variety of cuisines, luxurious spas, fantastic shopping, exciting local experiences that cater to both foodies and adventurers, and a vibrant arts and culture scene that features Cambodia’s premier contemporary circus.

Although Siem Reap is best known as the gateway to Cambodia’s Angkor Archaeological Park, it is also home to a variety of attractions and activities that make it one of the country’s must-see destinations. A wide variety of exciting experiences, from bike rides through the verdant countryside just outside of town to lessons in traditional Cambodian cuisine, can all be found in this major hotspot. Before exploring Angkor Wat, it is recommended that you stop at the Angkor National Museum to learn more about the Temple’s history. It also offers many aspects of Khmer art and culture in this museum.

Angkor Wat can be found around five miles north of modern Siem Reap in Cambodia. At the time of the Khmer dynasty’s rule, it was one of the largest cities in the world. With time, the city’s wooden structures began to deteriorate as the surrounding jungle encroached upon them.

The most popular attraction here is the Temple, which is actually only a small part of the larger city, and it takes around three days to see all of the remarkable structures built by the Angkorian civilization. Other attractions are the Bayon Temple with its 216 stone-carved faces, the Angkor Thom and Preah Khan citadels, and the tree-root-encircled Temple of Ta Prohm, made famous by the filming of Tomb Raider.

Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap Lake is Cambodia’s most important waterway and the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. There is a thriving ecosystem in this body of water, which is also known as the Boeung Tonle Sap. In addition to being an essential component of Cambodia’s irrigation system and a significant source of food, the lake serves as the home of 170 floating villages, the inhabitants of which make their living from fishing and whose houses are built directly on the surface of the lake.

All of the homes, stores, churches, schools, and temples in these communities rest atop rudimentary buoy foundations made from lashed-together barrels and bamboo. A visit to Tonle Sap Lake is a worthwhile way to experience rural Khmer culture as well as one of the most ecologically diverse lakes in the world. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience not to be missed.

Koh Kong Conservation Corridor

The Cardamom Mountains are known for their spectacular beauty, and they serve as the crown jewel of the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor, a pure natural rainforest zone that spans all the way through the southwestern section of Cambodia, on the Thai border, to the coast, where the island of Koh Kong lies offshore.

Bears, tigers, crocodiles, and elephants all call the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor home. It is one of the last few remaining unspoiled rainforests in Southeast Asia. The foggy lakes and tunnels provide a safe haven for endangered animals. You can also take in the unrivalled scenery from one of the many floating river lodges available. The mountains of the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor undoubtedly have an otherworldly aspect, particularly when compared with the rest of the metropolitan, war-torn Cambodia, and areas disregarded for conservation.

FAQs for Cambodia Tours

Singaporean citizens are eligible for visa-free entry to Cambodia for stays up to 30 days. However, visa regulations are subject to change, hence our travel specialist will provide the latest information during your trip preparation.

The optimal period for a visit to Cambodia spans from November to May, encompassing the dry season. Within this timeframe, the period from November to February is particularly appealing, marked as the “cool season” and favored by many due to its comparatively cooler temperatures.

We recommend planning for a 7-day trip to Cambodia to experience its key attractions through our tailored tour package. Should your schedule allow, extending your stay to 10 days would afford a more in-depth exploration of the country’s rich culture and landscapes.

Beyond the famed Angkor Wat, Cambodia offers hidden gems like Battambang, renowned for its colonial architecture and captivating bat cave; Kratie, where dolphin watching along the Mekong River captivates visitors; and Kulen National Park, a haven for nature lovers with its springs, waterfalls, and opportunities for clifftop private picnics and biking adventures.

Absolutely! Visitors to Cambodia can participate in unique cultural experiences such as attending a traditional Apsara dance performance, learning about silk weaving at a local workshop with local artisans, joining a cooking class to learn Khmer cuisine, or exploring rural villages to gain insights into daily life and traditions.

Then on to Cambodia which is a small country with a big history and once the seat of one of Asia’s most magnificent early civilizations, the mighty Khmer empire of Angkor, whose legendary temples continue to provide a touchstone of national identity.

From sir thomas stamford raffles landing in singapore on january 28, 1819, through to the powerful khmer empire of cambodia, join us to experience their fascinating history, culture and wild nature..

  • Singapore wildlife at the Botanical Gardens, Sungei Buloh Wetland and Pulau Ubin.
  • Singapore culture (Buddhist, Hindu and Malay).

Singapore is a modern, multicultural society packed with fascinating history, antiquity and culinary pleasures. Yet, there is a captivating unseen wild side, packed with natural gems as the Botanical Gardens, Pulau Ubin and the Sungei Buloh Wetlands.

The old streets of Chinatown have kept their charm, the cramped five-foot-ways, dingy alleys and raucous street hawkers are fascinating pockets of history. We can wander through these still-narrow streets discovering family-run goldsmiths, medicinal halls and tea-houses plying their trades next to sleeker neighbours such as hipster bars and lifestyle shops.

Little India delivers traditional Indian culture and fare, there are no lack of food choices here. Even if spicy food does not sit well with you, there is an abundance of choices, including street food like Roti Prata, or the marinated Chicken Tikka and delicious Palek Paneer that makes a great dip for a piece of fragrant garlic naan.

The Muslim Quarter Singapore – also known as the Kampong Glam – is Singapore’s smallest ethnic quarter and has a chic charm all of its own. And again, it is a living and working neighbourhood which makes it as authentic as they come.

The marks of the British colonial influence in the Neo-Classical buildings can be observed all around the city, it’s a fascinating mix of past and present.

  • Siem Reap – Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom City including the Bayon and Ta Prom are fascinating temple complexes highlighting the power and skills of the Khmer civilization.
  • Wild nature at the Prek Toal biospheres on the Tonlé Sap lake the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia.
  • The local culture at Prek Toal floating village.
  • Beng Melea (built in the middle of the 12th century) and Koh Ker (Once the ancient capital of Cambodia).
  • Thmatboey ECO lodge (Giant and White Shouldered Ibises).
  • Siem Reap, local food, culture and local sites.
  • Phnom Penh – The Royal Place, National Museum of Cambodia, Wat Phnom and the Cheung Ek Killing fields.
  • Phnom Penh – Tonle Sap and Mekong river – Local food and culture.

It has been said that Cambodia’s Angkor Wat can only be rivalled by a few of the world’s greatest historic sites, such as Petra in Jordan or Peru’s Machu Picchu. But once you’ve paid a visit to the famed temple complex that has become a symbol of the country, you’ll realize that Cambodia’s magic extends far beyond the walls of Angkor Wat. From the country’s friendly people greeting you with wide smiles, its charming cities, rich culture and unique nature delivers a fascinating insight into the Khmer world.

The Angkor Archaeological Park is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia, stretching over some 400 km2. The Park contains magnificent remains of many of the Khmer Empire’s capitals from the 9 th to the 15 th century. They include the famous Angkor Wat complex, Angkor Thom City with the Bayon and Ta Prom temples with their countless sculptural decorations.

UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging program to safeguard this symbolic site and its surrounds.

Away from the more well-known temples, much of the country remains largely a road less travelled, and in many places rarely explored. It remains essentially a rural society and something of a regional backwater offering a refreshing throwback to an older and simpler era. It’s a fascinating country where we can immerse ourselves Khmer culture and food.

Cambodians remain among Asia’s friendliest and welcoming people.

LITTLE INDIA, THE MALAY QUARTER (KAMPONG GLAM) AND CHINA TOWN

  • 9.00 AM: Pick up from reception. Breakfast at the hotel.

LITTLE INDIA

A bustling hive of sights sounds and intriguing aromas, Little India has traditionally been the home of Singapore’s Indian community. We can wander the streets scented with spices and jasmine garlands, gaze upon rows of traditional outlets selling silver and brass-ware, ethnic jewellers and rainbow-coloured silk saris.

The colour, smiles and smells are all authentically subcontinental and warm as are the spiritual chants from the various mosques and temples. The spicy aromas that infuse the air are odd, yet intriguing and a visit to the oldest temple in Little India, Sri Veeramakaliamman is obligatory.

MALAY QUARTER

The history of Kampong Glam can be traced back to the 1820s. The name comes from the Malay language, kampung means ‘village’ and ‘gelam’ a Paperbark tree that grew in the area and was frequently used for building ships.

Glam was the historic seat of Malay royalty in Singapore. Today the former Sultan’s palace, the Istana, Kampong Glam, has been converted into a heritage museum. The Malay Heritage Center was created to provide locals and tourists with an insight into the rich history and culture of Singapore’s Malay history.

Arab Street with its abundance of carpet and fabric shops, Bussorah Streets souvenir shops, and Haji Lane, one of Singapore’s hidden gems, is known for its vintage clothing boutiques.

  • Lunch: Local Food Court.
  • 3.30 PM Pick up from reception.
  • Afternoon and evening in China Town.

CHINATOWN with a local guide

Chinatown has been the cultural hub for Singapore’s Chinese migrants since 1821. Situated next to the financial district. The quaint pre-war shop houses on the colourful streets and alleyways are home to a vast array of diverse shops.

When Sir Stamford Raffles divided up Singapore among its ethnic groups, the Chinese immigrants received the largest portion of land. Today, Chinatown is Singapore’s largest Historic District, and an important and unique ethnic quarter Singaporeans fondly call “our Chinatown”, with its colourful Peranakan shop-houses.

Soon after settling in Singapore, the people erected temples that were not just for worship, but also centres of dialect-group activities, before their respective clan associations as the Cantonese, Hokkien and Teowchews   were established.

  • Overnight: Singapore.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

PULAU UBIN AND THE SINGAPORE BOTANICAL GARDENS with a local guide

  •  Pulau Ubin and Singapore Botanical Gardens.
  • 6.30 AM: Pick up from reception. Breakfast on route to the Changi Boat Terminal.
  • Ten-minute boat ride to Pulau Ubin.

Our visit to Ubin will take us back to Singapore in the 1960s with the simpler pleasures of life. The slow lane starts as soon as you join the queue for the bumboat at the Changi terminal.

Shaped like a boomerang, Pulau Ubin is situated just off the north-eastern corner of mainland Singapore and often considered the last ‘kampong’ (village) in Singapore. It also holds the Chek Jawa Wetlands, one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems.

In the early days, granite mining supported a few thousand settlers. Much of the original vegetation was cleared for the cultivation of rubber and crops like coffee, pineapple, coconut and jasmine. Today, the abandoned granite quarries filled with water remain as picturesque relics of Ubin’s history, while forests and grasslands have regenerated to cover up the ravages of the past.

  • Lunch: Changi Food Court then head to the Singapore Botanical Gardens.

SINGAPORE BOTANICAL GARDENS

The idea of a national garden in Singapore started in 1822 when Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore and a keen naturalist, developed the first ‘Botanical and Experimental Garden’ at Fort Canning.

It was only in 1859 that the Gardens at its present site was founded and laid out. The Gardens were handed over to the British colonial government (in 1874) and a series of Kew-trained botanists saw the Gardens blossom into an important botanical institute.

  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

SUNGEI BULOH WETLAND, KRANJI BATTLE SITE, THE KRANGI WAR MEMORIAL AND KONG MENG SAN PHOR KARK SEE MONASTERY

  • 7.00 AM: Pick up from reception. Breakfast route.
  • Sungei Buloh Wetlands and War Memorial.

SUNGEI BULOH WETLAND RESERVE with a local guide.

The name means (Sungei = River, Buloh = Bamboo). Opened in 1993, this 87-hectare wetland refuge is of supreme importance during the migration of waders and shorebirds (East-Asian Flyway) between the summer breeding grounds of North Asia (Siberia, China etc.) and the wintering grounds of the Southern Hemisphere (Australia etc.).

The wetlands are also home to the large Malayan Water Monitor, Smooth-coated Otters (subspecies), Plantain Squirrels (subspecies) and the Estuarine Crocodiles.

KRANJI BATTLE SITE with a local guide.

The Battle of Singapore was fought from 8 to 15 February 1942 between Allied (mainly British Commonwealth) and Japanese forces. The first Japanese troops landed in Singapore via the northwestern coastline on 8 February 1942.

At the Causeway on 10 February, Dalforce fighters and the Australian 27th Brigade were noted for repelling the initial advance by the Japanese Imperial Guards Division by inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers, so much so that Japanese commander Lieutenant General Tomoyuki Yamashita considered withdrawing from the operation.

Even though the Japanese forces faced stiff resistance from the Allied soldiers they managed to breach the Kranji- Jurong defence line when Allied forces retreated from the area due to a misunderstanding of orders thus allowing the Japanese to land and consolidate their invasion of Singapore.

KRANJI WAR MEMORIAL with a local guide.

Krangi War Memorial; The Kranji War Memorial in Singapore honours the men and women from the Commonwealth who died in the line of duty during World War II.

  • Lunch: at the Roti Prata Place.
  • 2.30 PM Pick up from reception.

KONG MENG SAN PHOR KARK SEE MONASTERY

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery (KMSPKS) was founded in 1921 by Venerable Sik Zhuan Dao from China. It serves as a place for Buddhist monks to practice and propagate the Dharma.

Kong Meng San which means “Bright Hill” in Chinese, is the name of Guanyin Bodhisattva’s Pure-land.

Phor Kark See the “monastery of universal awakening”, encapsulates the vision and aspiration of the monastery to reach out to all sentient beings to assist them in the path towards awakening, Nirvana!

EXPLORE BALESTIER ROAD AND THE SINGAPORE MARITIME TRAIL

  • 10.00 AM: Pick up from reception. Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Discover Balestier Road, Culture and History

BALESTIER ROAD

From sugar plantations to shops filled with sweet and savoury delights, Balestier is an area that offers a real taste of history. From Tigers that killed sugar cane workers to temples with deep roots, the Road tells a tale that spans nearly 180 years and has borne witness to Singapore’s remarkable journey from British trading post to today’s modern city.

The Goh Chor Tua Pek Kong Temple was built in 1847 at Lavender Road (previously, Rochor Road) by Chinese labourers working on Joseph Balestier’s sugar plantation. Goh Chor is the Hokkien transliteration of Rochore, the name of the surrounding area in the mid 19th century, while Tua Pek Kong (literally ‘Grand Old Man’) is a Taoist deity widely worshipped by overseas Chinese across Southeast Asia.

Balestier Road is characterized by its two-story shop-houses. One example is the row of shop-houses from 292 to 312 Balestier Road built in 1926. It is a hybrid architectural style known as “Singapore Eclectic” or “Chinese Baroque” that arose during the rubber boom from the turn of the 20th century to the 1930s.

Another different style at 503 Balestier Road, designed by Kwan Yow Luen, these shop-houses were built in 1928  by Sim Cheng Neo, a lady whose family home was located there.

The history and culture packed into this road are as delicious as its numerous food stalls.

  • Lunch: Balestier Road.
  • 3.00 PM pick up from reception.
  • Afternoon the Singapore Maritime Trail and the Merlion.

SINGAPORE MARITIME TRAIL

The Singapore Maritime trail will take us on a journey to discover the fascinating history and iconic landmarks rooted in Singapore maritime heritage.

From the cool shaded forest of Fort Canning, on to the Singapore River, Clarke Quay, Raffles Landing site, past the Grand Fullerton Hotel to Collyer Quay and the Iconic Merlion.

Once used as a trading port the Singapore River was lined with large warehouses and docks, which loaded waiting barges to carry goods by the river out to waiting ships to convey around the world.

Clarke Quay and Boat Quay are now lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs and shops, and has seen a huge revival into Singapore’s busiest entertainment area.

Collyer Quay is home to the archetypal symbol of Singapore, the Merlion (the mythical Merlion with the head of a lion and the body of a fish).

JURONG BIRD PARK, GARDENS BY THE BAY AND SINGAPORE HARBOR CRUISE

  • 8.00 AM Pick up from reception. Breakfast at the hotel.

JURONG BIRD PARK

Jurong Bird Park offers us an up-close encounter with some of Asian’s splendid and rarest feathered friends. Spread across 20.2 hectares in a western corner of Singapore, the sprawling park is Asia’s largest, including a collection of over 400 species encompassing up to 5,000 birds.

There are many star attractions at this sprawling park including the world’s largest walk-in Lorikeet flight aviary at over nine stories high, where you’ll get close to 15 colourful Lorikeet species, the impressive Penguin Coast where you’ll find many species of these flightless birds and the Waterfall Aviary, one of the world’s largest walk-in aviaries, home to more than 600 birds and a 30-meter-high waterfall.

  • PM: Gardens by the Bay.
  • 3.30 PM pick from reception.

GARDENS BY THE BAY AND SINGAPORE HARBOR CRUISE

GARDENS BY THE BAY

The Gardens by the Bay was conceptualized in 2005 as a key component of the government’s “City in a Garden” vision, which evolved from Singapore’s reputation as a Garden City.   National Parks envisioned a garden that would eventually rival iconic green spaces like Central Park in New York and London’s Kew Gardens, and become a defining feature of Singapore’s aspirations to become a global city.   A new public green space in the city area was also needed, as the Singapore Botanical Gardens was overstretched by the demands of leisure, research and academic usage.   It was thus decided that Gardens by the Bay would be the focal point for horticultural recreation, while the Botanic Gardens would cater mainly to education, research.

SINGAPORE HARBOR CRUISE

As night falls we board one of Singapore’s iconic bum-boats, which have been retrofitted with zero-emission electric engines.

On board, there is commentary about the river’s colourful history, while we relax and cruise around the harbour taking in the unforgettable Singapore evening skyline.

  • Evening: boat trip Singapore Harbor.

DEPART SINGAPORE FOR CAMBODIA

  • Breakfast at Singapore hotel.
  • AM transport to Changi Airport for a flight to Siem Reap (included).
  • Arrive Siem Reap and be greeted by our local representative and proceed to check in to your hotel. You can then spend some time to rest and relax at leisure.

Siem Reap province is in northwest Cambodia. It is the major tourist hub in Cambodia, as it is the closest city to the world-famous temples of Angkor (the Angkor temple complex is north of the city). The provincial capital is also called Siem Reap and is in the South of the province on the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake, the greatest freshwater reserve in whole Southeast Asia.

The name of the city literally means Siamese defeated, referring to the victory of the Khmer Empire over the army of the Thai kingdom in the 17th century.

  • PM Meet and Greet and evening meal to discuss the details of this part of the Trip.
  • Overnight Siem Reap.

ANGKOR GREAT PARK

  • Angkor Wat archaeological sites.
  • 7:30 AM: Pick up from reception.
  • Breakfast at the hotel.

Angkor Great Park is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia.

AM: Angkor Wat, in its beauty and state of preservation, is unrivalled. It is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. The centre structure is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. Angkor Wat is the centrepiece of any visit to the temples of the Angkor Great Park. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, relief’s and sculpture make it one of the finest monuments in the world.

Lunch: Local Food Court (inside the Angkor Park complex).

PM: ANGKOR THOM CITY, THE BAYON TEMPLE AND TA PROM

Angkor Thom City is undeniably an expression of the highest genius. It is, in three dimensions and on a scale worthy of an entire nation, the materialization of Buddhist cosmology, representing ideas that only great painters would dare to portray.

The Bayon vies with Angkor Wat as a favoured monument of visitors. The two evoke similar aesthetic responses yet are different in purpose, design, architecture and decoration. The dense jungle surrounding the temple camouflages its position in relation to other structures at Angkor, so it was not known for some time that the Bayon stands in the exact centre of Angkor Thom City.

Ta Prom, best known for the movie “Tomb Raider”, lies 1 km east of the Angkor Thom City. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prom is in much the same condition in which it was found, merged with the jungle. The photogenic and atmospheric combination of Silk Cotton and Strangler Fig trees entwined in the ruins, and the jungle surroundings, have made it one of Angkor’s most enchanting temples.

  • Overnight: Siem Reap Hotel.

SIEM REAP AND PREK TOAL HOMESTAY

AM FREE TIME TO DO AS YOU WISH, WANDER THE CITY OR JUST RELAX

  •  PM: 1:30 Pickup from hotel and travel to and explore Prek Toal Floating Village.

PREK TOAL HOMESTAY

Prek Toal is a complete village, encompassing the Koh Chi Vang commune, in Ek Phnom district, and as most floating villages, it is a bustling township of fisher-folk and boat builders, providing everything its population requires.

After settling into our home-stay we explore the village by boat.

• Overnight: Prek Toal Homestay. • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

PREK TOAL NATURE BIOSPHERE AND SIEM REAP

  • 6:00 AM Pick up from Home-stay.
  • Breakfast on the route.

Depending on the water levels and time of the year we can enter the Biosphere or explore the edges of the lake for wildlife and even join in some fishing adventures with the locals. It’s a charming place to experience with the added chance to view Slivered Languor’s as they feed in the forest.

The Prek Toal biosphere is a stunning bird sanctuary, with a significant number of rare breeds gathering in one area. The Bio-spheres river systems can only be accessed by boat at the end of the wet season when the forest is flooded.

November to April is usually the best time the visit.

  • Lunch: Prek Toal Homestay.

PM: RETURN TO SIEM REAP, PUB STREET AND NIGHT MARKET

PRASAT PRAM, KOH KER AND TMATBOEY

  • 5:30 AM Pick up from reception.

Explore Prasat Pram a small yet spectacular temple, consisting of three surviving sanctuary towers and two libraries as well as the tenth century Koh Ker complex which was the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire.

  • Lunch: Koh Ker Food Court.

PM: Travel to Tmatboey Eco Lodges.

We visit the Tmatboey Ibis Ecotourism Project in Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary, in the Northern Plains of Cambodia. The Giant Ibis is critically endangered and Cambodia’s national bird!

Commenced in 2005, and using the Giant Ibises as ‘flagships’, the project aims to conserve globally threatened waterbirds persisting in the forests around the Tmatboey village.

PM: NATURE WALK AND LOCAL VILLAGE

  • Overnight: Tmatboey Eco Lodges.

TMATBOEY, BENG MEALEA AND RETURN TO SIEM REAP

7:00 AM Pick up from Eco Lodges.

  • Breakfast at Tmatboey Eco Lodge.

Bird watching and meeting the local indigenous population is the focus at Tmatboey. Our visit and support helps to protect the flora and fauna, especially the White-Shouldered Ibis and the Giant Ibis.

The Tmayboey Ibis Ecotourism project was set up to protect and learn more about these endangered species.

AM: Nature walk with a chance for us to view the Giant Ibis in its protected habitat.

We will also visit the local school to see how the students are progressing and to deliver much needed books and stationery.

  • Lunch: Tmatboey Eco Lodges.

PM: Explore Beng Mealea on route back to Siem Reap.

BENG MEALEA

Beng Mealea (its name means “lotus pond”). The history of the temple is unknown, and it can be dated only by its architectural style, identical to Angkor Wat. Scholars assumed it was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II and is enclosed by a massive moat measuring 1.2km by 900m.

It was built as Hinduist temple, however, there are some carvings depicting Buddhist motifs as well. Its primary material is sandstone and it is largely un-restored, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards and many of its stones lying in great heaps. For years it was difficult to reach, but a road recently built to the temple complex of Koh Ker has made it more accessible.

  • 8:30 AM: Pick up from reception.

Drive to Phnom Penh stopping along the way to visit local markets and food courts.

Phnom Penh is a vibrant bustling city situated at the confluence of three rivers, the mighty Mekong, the Bassac and the great Tonle Sap Lake.

It was once considered the ‘Gem’ of Indochina and still maintains considerable charm with plenty to see. It exudes a sort of provincial charm and tranquillity with French colonial mansions and tree-lined boulevards amidst monumental Angkorian architecture.

A mixture of Asian exotica and the famous Cambodian hospitality awaits us in the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

  • PM. Free time.
  • Overnight: Phnom Penh Hotel.

CHEUNG EK AND NATIONAL MUSEUM OF CAMBODIA

  • 8:00 AM Pick up from reception.

The Cheung Ek genocide museum is in Cheung Ek commune, Dankoar district, about 15 km from the centre of Phnom Penh.

The Killing Fields of Cheung Ek was made famous by the film of the same name “The Killing Fields”, it was a place where more than 17,000 civilians were killed and buried in mass graves; many of them transported here after detention and torture in Toul Sleng. This place is a chilling reminder of the brutalities of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. In the centre of the area is a 17 story glass stupa which houses 8000 skulls exhumed from mass graves.

Note: Both Tuol Sleng Museum and the Killing Fields exhibits may be disturbing for some and aren’t suitable for younger children and adults who are easily shocked.

  • PM: National Museum of Cambodia.

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Located just north of the Royal Palace, the National Museum of Cambodia is housed in a graceful terracotta structure of traditional design (built from 1917 to 1920), it incorporates an inviting courtyard garden.

The museum is home to the world’s finest collection of Khmer sculpture: a millennium’s worth and more of masterful Khmer design.

CAMBODIA’S ROYAL PALACE, WAT PHNOM AND APSARA DANCE PERFORMANCE

  • 8:00 AM: Pick up from reception.

ROYAL PALACE

The Royal Palace is a striking structure situated near the riverfront. Its classic Khmer roofs and ornate gilding dominates the diminutive skyline of Phnom Penh. The complex is divided by walls, on the north side is the Silver Pagoda and to the south-west is the Khemarin Palace “Palace of the Khmer King”, where Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni resides.

PM: WAT PHNOM

Set on top of a tree-covered knoll 27m high, Wat Phnom is the only hill in town. According to legend, the first pagoda on this site was erected in 1373 to house four statues discovered by a woman name, Penh. The statues of Buddha were deposited there by the waters of the Mekong.

The main entrance to Wat Phnom is via the grand eastern staircase, which is guarded by lions and naga (snake) balustrades.

Today, many people come here to pray for good luck and success in school exams or business affairs. When a petitioner’s wish is granted, he or she returns to make the offering (such as a garland of jasmine flowers or bananas, of which the spirits are said to be especially fond) promised when the request was made.

It is a wonderful place to mix with local worshipers.

KHMER TRADITIONAL DANCE AND PERFORMANCES

It has been a tradition since the earliest days of tourism in the 19th century to treat visitors to Cambodia with an ‘Apsara dance performance’ – a taste of classical Khmer culture.

No visit to Cambodia is complete without attending at least one performance.

Dance performances commence at 7:00 PM, consisting of 4 or 5 dances (classical and folk).

The best time to visit Cambodia is between November and April, when it sees very little rain. During this time, you’ll see clear blue skies making it a great time to enjoy a relaxing getaway on the southern coast.

Outside of this period, humidity increases, and the rains come, assisting Cambodian farmers in the growing of their crops. However, you shouldn’t be deterred from travelling – the countryside is lush and green, rivers are full and flowing, and the temples are quiet. This is the best time to visit some of the outer-lying temples, which will often be deserted.

At the end of the summer one of Cambodia’s true wonders comes to life – The Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and home to Cambodia’s floating villages.

Getting around Cambodia is all part of the adventure. Massive improvements to the national highway network in the past few years have made getting around the country much easier than it once was, with many formerly dirt roads now surfaced and new highways built. Even so, getting from A to B remains time-consuming: roads are still narrow and bumpy, while regular wet-season inundations play havoc with transport (and often wash away large sections of tarmac in their wake).

What travelers are saying

"This tour has amazing sites, good hotels in great locations, great pace BUT the tour director that was assigned to be with our small group added nothing to the experience. He did not give us any info, tell us about what we were seeing, give us any info at all. The only time he talked was to tell us when the next bathroom break would be. Apparently this is common for Globus to use retirees starting another chapter. Our guide was 76 and had no energy. Travel with Gate 1 or Intreped.... guides can make or break a tour."

Cultural, High Adventure, Local Immersion & Homestays

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"The tour had an excellent itinerary and activities, giving a broad overview of Peru - we loved it. Accommodations (with one exception) were great, and all had an included breakfast buffet. The tour's included activities (e.g. cooking class, pisco tour and tasting, potato park, boat tour of Isla Ballestas) were terrific. Appreciated the two included flights which saved a lot of driving time. Logistics were handled, and everything was smooth and easy (thanks to our CEO, Mary Chu!)."

Explore Hanoi's top attractions with your knowledgeable private tour guide. This half-day excursion features the following highlights:

One-Pillar Pagoda: Situated at the southwest corner of Ba Dinh Square, this petite pagoda boasts a captivating legend. According to the tale, Emperor Ly Thai Tong constructed it after a dream in which a Buddha presented him with a son, and shortly afterward, his wish was granted. The pagoda's design mimics the Buddha's posture, making it a unique and meaningful site.

Temple of Literature: This ancient Confucian sanctuary has evolved into one of Hanoi's most esteemed historical landmarks. Modeled after Confucius' birthplace in Qufu, China, it comprises five courtyards meticulously arranged. Upon entering through the grand twin-tiered Văn Miếu gate, you'll find three pathways that traverse the length of this splendid complex.

Discover the wonders of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, a treasure trove of historical and architectural marvels.

Angkor Wat: Recognized as one of the world's Eight Wonders, Angkor Wat stands as an awe-inspiring testament to faith. This monumental complex, primarily built for religious purposes, includes a plethora of temples, pagodas, statues, palaces, and chambers, all dedicated to King Suryavarman II during the Khmer Empire's zenith. Typically, a thorough exploration takes about three days, with Angkor Wat serving as the primary gateway to the Angkor culture. Note: The site is a 40-minute drive from central Siem Reap.

Angkor Thom: Encircled by a vast moat, Angkor Thom exudes the aura of a fortress rather than a religious sanctuary. The site boasts five entrances, with four in the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west) and the fifth, the Victory Gate, leading eastward from the Angkor Thom Royal Palace grounds. While each entrance once had a causeway, only the south gate remains submerged in water today.

Ta Prohm: Nestled in the western expanse of the Angkor Wat Complex, Ta Prohm's enchanting beauty lies in its colossal stones and the embrace of towering trees. King Jayavarman VII constructed this site as part of his ambitious monastery and university construction program. The mystique of Ta Prohm is heightened by its association with the movie "Tomb Raider." Note: Visiting in the afternoon offers respite from the scorching sun, as the immense trees provide welcome shade.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat: Witnessing the sunrise at Angkor Wat is a quintessential travel experience. For the best conditions, plan your visit between November and April during the dry season. Keep in mind: 1. Depart from your hotel around 04:30 as crowds gather for the sunrise. 2. Ensure you have purchased your Angkor Wat ticket in advance. 3. Bring refreshments, mosquito repellent, and dress warmly. 4. After the sunrise (around 10-15 minutes), take a peaceful walk for a serene experience. For a quieter sunrise, we recommend visiting Srah Srang.

Set out early for a two-hour journey to the Damnoen Saduak floating market.

Maeklong Railway Market: As the name suggests, this market boasts a railway cutting through its heart, with trains passing multiple times daily. You'll find typical Thai market wares, but what sets Maeklong Railway Market apart is the railway itself. Vendors have their stalls right by the tracks. When the train approaches, they swiftly retract their awnings and goods to ensure a safe passage for the train. Tourists gather nearby to witness this unique spectacle, capturing videos and photos of the event. Once the train has passed, vendors return their items to the tracks as if nothing happened.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market: Next, journey to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market to experience Thailand's traditional way of buying and selling goods. Then, return to Bangkok, arriving at your hotel in time for lunch (not included).

Delve into Thailand's rich history and spirituality with a visit to the Royal Grand Palace.

Royal Grand Palace: The Royal Grand Palace stands as Thailand's most sacred site. This historic complex includes several buildings, among them Wat Phra Kaew, home to the revered Emerald Buddha, which dates back to the 14th century. While the palace ceased to serve as a royal residence in the early 20th century, it remains a center for various ceremonies and auspicious events.

Wat Phra Kaew (Emerald Buddha): Often referred to as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Phra Kaew holds the distinction of being Thailand's most sacred Buddhist temple. The Emerald Buddha enshrined within is a powerful religio-political symbol and serves as the protective image of Thai society. Located in the heart of Bangkok's historic Phra Nakhon District, within the Grand Palace precincts, this temple offers a glimpse into the country's spiritual heritage.

Embark on an enriching journey from Chiang Rai, heading north on a one-hour drive to explore the iconic Golden Triangle, a region where the Ruak River meets the Mekong River. This is a significant geographical point where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos converge, historically notorious for its involvement in the opium trade throughout the 20th century.

Golden Triangle Exploration: An exciting long-tail boat ride along the Mekong River will treat you to breathtaking views of the Laotian countryside. After this river adventure, you'll disembark in Chiang Saen to unravel the ruins of an ancient city that dates back to the 7th century.

Chiang Khong Experience: Next, venture to Chiang Khong, renowned for being one of the few places where the elusive Mekong giant catfish is still found. Additionally, this town plays a vital role as a local hill tribe market hub and a center for trade, both legitimate and illicit, with northern Laos.

Connect with the Meo Hill Tribe: During your visit, you'll have the opportunity to meet with a Meo hill tribe and gain insights into their traditional way of life. Observe the women's pleated hemp skirts adorned with blue and white batik patterns, engage in friendly conversations, and benefit from the guidance of your local expert. Following a satisfying lunch, you'll return to Chiang Rai, arriving in the late afternoon. This expedition promises a captivating blend of history, culture, and stunning landscapes.

Prepare to embark on an extraordinary journey through the distinct and artistic temples of Chiang Rai, a region brimming with captivating architectural marvels.

Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple): Situated just 15 kilometers southwest of Chiang Rai town, this temple is a true masterpiece and is often referred to as the "White Temple." It stands out as one of Thailand's most iconic temples and beckons visitors from across the globe. Unconventional and contemporary, it combines the essence of a Buddhist temple with the flair of an art exhibit. You'll have approximately one hour to explore this unique site.

Baandam Museum (The Black House): Found just outside Chiang Rai, the Baandam Museum, affectionately known as the Black House, is more of a museum than a temple. Despite this, it houses various shrines and is among the city's most popular attractions. Immerse yourself in its intriguing displays, bridging art and culture.

Wat Rong Suea Ten (The Blue Temple): This newer addition to Chiang Rai's temple landscape, informally referred to as the Blue Temple, showcases contemporary design with vibrant blue and gold accents. Its interior features a grand White Buddha statue encircled by modern Buddhist art. Although not as widely known to tourists as the White Temple and Black House, the Blue Temple is a hidden gem and a photographer's paradise.

Start your day with a morning visit to a bustling food and flower market, where you'll witness local Thais going about their daily shopping. It's a vibrant and lively experience that immerses you in Chiang Mai's unique lifestyle.

Next, we head to Wat Suan Dok, a serene temple that serves as the final resting place for the ashes of former Chiang Mai kings and the Royal Family. Explore its graceful grounds and delve into the rich history of this site.

Embark on a scenic 30-minute drive to Doi Suthep Mountain, passing through stunning landscapes of Northern Thailand. As you ascend past mountains and forests, you'll reach Wat Phra That, one of the region's holiest temples. Founded in 1383 AD, this sacred site can be reached by climbing 309 steps. For those seeking a more leisurely ascent, a tram is available for a small fee.

The climb is rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view over the city – a sight that will surely leave you in awe. After this enchanting experience, we return to Chiang Mai for a unique way to explore the city.

Rickshaw Ride through Chiang Mai's Old Town: Enjoy a 20-minute rickshaw ride through the serene streets of the old town. It's a delightful way to soak in the city's charm before returning to your hotel.

Half-Day Home Host Cooking: You'll escape the bustling city and venture into the peaceful countryside for a captivating cooking class hosted by a local family in a quaint village. Upon arrival, you'll receive a warm welcome with flowers and refreshing drinks. The gracious host will introduce you to their home and share insights into the local culture.

The home you'll visit belongs to the Raunkaew-Yanon family, who arrived in the area almost 150 years ago, possibly traveling by elephant. They are a Lanna family dedicated to preserving traditions passed down through generations. Their homes are crafted from teak wood, and the surrounding environment is maintained in a traditional manner, a sight rarely seen in Chiang Mai.

Experience the Lanna way of life as you stroll through their family-owned orchard, adorned with various fruit trees like banana, mango, and coconut. The garden is abundant with herbs used in cooking. To enhance your cultural immersion, you'll also have the opportunity to participate in a cooking session with the local family and savor a delicious meal together. This is a unique chance to connect with Chiang Mai's rich heritage and savor its flavors.

Explore Doi Inthanon: Embark on a full-day adventure to Doi Inthanon National Park. As you drive through picturesque landscapes and lush paddy fields, you'll discover the beauty of Northern Thailand. Visit the King and Queen Pagodas, built by the Royal Thai Air Force to celebrate their 60th birthdays. These pagodas offer breathtaking views of the park's mountainous terrain.

Engage with the Karen hill tribe in a local village and explore their vibrant hill tribe market. On your way back, stop at Wachiratharn Waterfall to witness nature's beauty.

For a more immersive experience, hike the Kiew Mae Pan Nature Trail, covering 3 kilometers or 2.5-3 hours. This trail leads you through lush forests, past giant Rhododendrons (Dec-Feb), and offers views from a scenic cliff.

Step off the beaten path and onto the Mae Klang Luuang Nature Trail. This trail takes you through dense forests, follows a river, and leads to Pa Dok Siew Waterfall, where you can take a refreshing dip.

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Half Day Tour: Your journey kicks off with a hassle-free hotel pickup in Chiang Mai, guiding you through approximately 1.5 hours of breathtaking scenery, taking in agricultural landscapes, rolling hills, and lush forests. The destination: Elephant Jungle Sanctuary.

Upon arrival, you'll meet an English-speaking guide who will offer insights into the elephants' lives. To truly immerse yourself, change into traditional Karen clothing and arm yourself with bananas and sugar cane. Accompanied by your guide, you'll wander through the sanctuary, coming face to face with free-roaming elephants and learning about their heartwarming stories.

Unforgettable Encounters and Ethical Tourism: During your visit, you're encouraged to touch, feed, photograph, and interact with these graceful giants. Gain a deeper understanding of their lifestyle and behaviors from your knowledgeable guide. The adventure continues with a mud spa session and a refreshing river bath, creating lasting memories and smiles. The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is an ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project dedicated to the well-being of these majestic creatures. Founded in July 2014, the sanctuary provides a loving home for over thirty formerly mistreated elephants, giving them the freedom to live their lives to the fullest. This progressive and ethically responsible approach serves as a platform to raise awareness about elephant care and the challenges faced by Asian elephants for people in Thailand and worldwide.
