The Emirates Airbus A380 is always a highlight at the Dubai Airshow, and this year, the aircraft had something a little different to offer. Emirates brought along one of its newest A380s, A6-EVQ, featuring the new premium economy cabin launched just under a year ago. Naturally, Simple Flying jumped at the chance to have a look around the aircraft.

As mentioned, A6-EVQ is one of the younger Airbus A380s in Emirates' colossal fleet of the giant. Since its delivery flight on October 7th, the jet has already flown to Paris, London, Vienna, and Frankfurt. On November 11th, the plane completed an hour-long flight down to the Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central (DWC).

Entering in economy

Boarding the aircraft took place from the exit row behind the wing, the fourth exit on the main deck of the plane. There, 'passengers' were greeted by a pair of Emirates flight attendants, along with ten abreast seating in a 3-4-3 configuration. Onboard the newer four-class cabin jets, there are 338 economy seats.

When Emirates revealed its new premium economy cabin, the airline also revealed that the whole cabin of the aircraft would be getting a makeover, not just the new fourth cabin. The economy seats onboard, typically accessed by a jet bridge to the second entrance, are spruced up. They are based on the seats installed in the airlines' 'gamechanger' Boeing 777 aircraft but have been upgraded to include full leather headrests, a wood effect tray table, and a 13.3-inch IFE screen.

Up the stairs to the bar

Passengers will seldom be able to use the rear spiral staircase on Emirates' Airbus A380s, as only business and first class passengers are eligible to use the bar. This is why it feels so special using it, even if the aircraft is on the ground.

Climbing the staircase takes you to a corridor past a crew rest area. Past this, passengers arrive in the onboard bar. On the new four-class aircraft, the bar has been spruced up to feature champagne-colored seating. On the right of the plane is a coffee table that will seat four. Meanwhile, on the left is a booth that will also sit four at a slightly higher table. Each day, the bar and other aircraft areas are decorated with freshly picked flowers such as orchids.

A range of refreshments can be whipped up at the bar, ranging from spirits to long drinks and cocktails. Of course, non-alcoholic beverages are also on offer. Emirates will soon be auctioning off the bar taken from its first Airbus A380 .

Stay informed:   Sign up  for our daily and weekly aviation news digests.

A refreshed business class cabin

Ahead of the bar is the business class cabin. Onboard this particular aircraft, it consists of 76 seats. The seats retain the champagne upholstery of the onboard bar, carrying these forwards. Tied with wood finishings, the cabin is intended to reflect the look and feel of a private jet.

The seats are staggered in a 1-2-1 layout, meaning that every passenger has direct aisle access. This means one window seat will be right by the window, while the one in front will have a table between the seat and the window but no divider from the aisle. The same is the case in the middle seats. The rows alternate between the middle seats being together and separated by tables.

Each seat can change into a lie-flat bed and offers a personal mini-bar, perfect for when you're thirsty but don't fancy walking to the bar or waiting for a drink to be brought over by a flight attendant.

First - where the magic happens

The first class cabin is really where the party is at onboard the Emirates Airbus A380. 14 first class suites are spread in a 1-2-1 pattern. There is no overlap between the suites, unlike business class, where somebody else's feet are in a box near your head.

The seats have a vast high-definition display, a hidden motorized bar, a cosmetic tray with hidden mirrors, and much more. Each of the suites has a fully closing door to ensure the comfort of the passengers inside, along with motorized window blinds. Passengers can use a tablet to control the inflight entertainment system, and of course, the seating positions are also controlled by buttons.

The highlight of the Emirates first class cabin is hidden behind a couple of doors at the very front of the cabin. The aircraft's enormous washrooms are more akin to a private bathroom in the skies. Not only is there ample space to move around and change, but the restrooms also include a luxury sink area. We still haven't mentioned the best bit, though.

You'll need the space to get changed before you step into the shower at the rear of the room. A relative oddity in an aircraft, the showers are set on a timer. Unfortunately, tall people may have to crouch down slightly to shower effectively. Given the taper of the fuselage at the front of the jet, there wasn't really enough room to stand up straight as a 6ft 3in individual.

What about premium economy

Emirates saved the newest cabin for last when showing off its latest Airbus A380 cabin configuration. Step down the main staircase at the front of the jet, and you'll find yourself at the front of the brand new premium economy cabin, which took to the skies less than a year ago.

The cabin consists of 56 seats, with a slightly less dense arrangement than the main economy cabin. Two seats have been removed from each row to give an eight abreast layout of 2-4-2. The seats are 19.5 inches wide and have a pitch of 40 inches.

The seats are made from stain-proof cream leather and also have the wood panel finish found in the business class cabin. A six-way adjustable headrest accompanies calf and footrests.

Last week Simple Flying revealed that Emirates will begin marketing the new premium economy cabin in June 2022 . The airline is set to roll out the new cabin on a vast number of aircraft over the coming years .

Want to read what it's like to travel in the premium economy cabin? Please keep a lookout for our written flight review coming later this week.

Inside an Emirates A380 (pictures)

On the day that Emirates inaugurated A380 service from San Francisco to Dubai, CNET goes inside for a tour of the sky-high luxury.

tour of emirates plane

Welcome to SFO

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT -- Though Emirates has been flying between San Francisco and Dubai since 2008, on Monday the airline switched its daily service from the Boeing 777 to the largest passenger aircraft in flight, the Airbus A380. The addition of more than 100 seats on the route reflects the powerful airline's confidence that it can fill them. In addition to being a growing tourist and business destination in its own right, Dubai also is a major transfer point for connecting flights to Africa, India and South Asia.

Emirates is the third airline to fly the A380 regularly to SFO. Lufthansa has year-round service to Frankfurt and Air France operates the A380 to Paris during the summer travel season.

Shortly after it arrives from its 15-hour flight from Dubai, the A380 rests at Gate A9 at the International Terminal. This aircraft is one of 51 A380s in the Emirates fleet. Each one costs more than $300 million (£192 million, AU$354 million).

 width=

Checking in

Hours before boarding, the check-in area is empty. Banners throughout the terminal highlighted the new aircraft. San Francisco is the fourth Emirates A380 destination in the United States and the 32nd such destination worldwide.

Emirates A380

Welcome aboard

Three jet bridges service the A380. Two, including the one seen here, access the bottom deck, while the third connects straight to the upper deck. After walking inside this door, the cockpit is accessible via short stairway to the left. Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed inside as the flight crew was preparing for departure. It takes just two people to fly the gigantic airliner, though a relief crew travels on ultralong flights.

Emirates A380

The lower deck

The economy class section takes up the entire lower deck. The 399 seats are arranged in a 10-abreast configuration, which is the same as a typical 747.

The high ceiling, wide cabin and muted colors help alleviate the usual crowded feel of cattle class. Each seat has electrical outlets and a 12.1-inch personal video screen for on-demand entertainment programming, video games and music. Inflight Wi-Fi and SMS texting are available in all classes.

Emirates A380

From this window seat, the enormous wing appears to stretch on forever.

Emirates A380

Something for the kids

I don't envy anyone taking a young child on a 15-hour flight back to Dubai, but perhaps these kiddie amenity kits will keep them entertained.

Emirates A380

Economy lavatories are plain and functional, though the faux wood trim livens things up a bit.

Emirates A380

All that glitters

Of course, this being Emirates, there's no shortage of gold trim.

Emirates A380

To the upper deck

The rear staircase leads up to business and first class on the upper deck. Its curved shape is reminiscent of the iconic spiral staircase on the first 747s.

Emirates A380

A galley kitchen

You need a galley this big to prepare several multicourse meals for 76 business-class passengers.

Emirates A380

The onboard lounge

At the rear of the upper deck is the posh lounge. Available to both business- and first-class passengers, it's well-stocked with drinks and snacks for the entire flight.

Emirates A380

Plot your progress

A large screen next to the bar shows an inflight map above a shelf with even more snacks.

Emirates A380

Never go hungry

French macaroons and fresh fruit are among the delicacies.

Emirates A380

Cocktail hour

You can relax and network on benches on either side of the bar. Fresh flowers are positioned through the premium classes.

Emirates A380

Business class

The large business class occupies the rear cabin of the upper deck. Each seat comes with a 20-inch display and plenty of storage. Wavelike patterns adorn the seat backs and bulkheads.

Emirates A380

Settle in for comfort

Business-class seats come with a tiny minibar, an amenity kit and outlets for almost every type of plug.

Emirates A380

An awesome view

Personally, I'd say the best channel is the one that lets you watch the tail-mounted camera from take-off to landing.

Emirates A380

Friends in business class

Business class is arranged in a four-abreast configuration. If you're traveling with someone, you can drop the divider between the center seats.

Emirates A380

Lots of controls

You can adjust the seat to lie flat when you're sleepy and no one behind you will complain.

Emirates A380

Top of the line

Of course, the ultimate in luxury and bling is the private suites in first class. Each suite has a sliding door for privacy, a lie-flat bed, a personal minibar and plentiful snacks, a vanity table and mirror, a wardrobe and a 27-inch video screen.

Emirates A380

Not so mini of a bar

With this selection, you don't even need to call the flight attendant.

Emirates A380

Take control

You use the tablet to control content on your personal video screen. I would have tested it, but it's locked down when the aircraft is on the ground.

Emirates A380

Extravagant multicourse meals are the norm on the top deck.

Emirates A380

Showers at 35,000 feet

Emirates is the only airline to offer a shower in the sky. The two shower suites are at the front of the first-class cabin.

Emirates A380

All the room you need

The two shower suites at the front end of the upper deck are bigger than the bathroom in my first San Francisco apartment. Inside you'll find a heated floor, an large sink, a counter for your personal effects and lotions and bath gels for days.

Emirates A380

Shower time

The shower itself is larger than I thought even if I wasn't able to look inside. You get 5 minutes of water time, but you can pause the flow while you lather up. You book shower appointments in 25-minute blocks at the start of the flight, which gives the cabin crew time to clean the shower for the next passenger. It's a bit much, yes, but I'd still love to try it.

Emirates A380

Once you're finished with your shower, you can pour yourself a cup of tea from the tranquil bar just outside.

Emirates A380

Taking the stairs

The front staircase is wide enough for two people to pass. It's areas like this where you notice the A380's immense size, even compared to the 747. It does feel like a flying cruise ship.

Emirates A380

Staffing the A380 takes 27 cabin crew members. The distinctive uniforms are an Emirates highlight.

Emirates A380

Readying for departure

As the tour ends and passengers prepare to board, the flight crew finishes their safety checks for departure. Next stop: Dubai.

My sister and I had a wonderful tour through UAE with Wingbuddy. The tour is quite busy but we liked that as we probably won’t be back and wanted to see as much as possible. Also recommend the day trip to Oman, which was really nice!
It was a great experience. Everything was organized nicely.
The guides and drivers were all excellent, 5-star rating. The only improvement would be to: - educate about basic pricing for most purchased items (Gold was explained, but e.g. a Thawb outfit price should be closer to 100 Dirham and not over 200 Dirham - give some hints what good prices for customers are). - hence the routing would make more sense in the other direction (for shopping less expensive first instead of most expensive). But I will not deduct any stars over that.
