I’ve been fortunate to travel widely across the Caribbean over the last 30 years. I’m also a descendant of Caribbean people, so many folks assume I’ve visited every island. Not likely—the Caribbean consists of 28 islands encompassing just over one million square miles. So while I’ve visited most, there are still a handful I’ve yet to encounter. But that’s a good thing. Many know the Caribbean of picture-perfect views —all lush green hillsides, soft beaches, sunny skies, sun loungers, and poolside cocktails. But that’s really just the white-sandy surface of this region, where each island has something distinct to offer. On Dominica , hiking is unmatched, notably its Boiling Lake, a flooded fumarole located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, where you can traverse across the rim of an active volcano. The best island hopping is in the British Virgin Islands , while Barbados is the action island, where the historic Garrison horse racing takes place year-round.

If you’re looking to soak up some winter sun by a pool lounger and nothing more, then any island in the Caribbean will do—the hotels in St Barth's are amongst some of the best in the world. Barbados might just be one of the best all-rounder islands in the Caribbean. Poolside beverages are spiked with rum, distilled on the island and best learnt about at St. Nicholas Abbey, a plantation house, museum, and rum distillery. Best island for: romance

The Caribbean is synonymous with honeymoons but it's St Lucia that tops them all when it comes to serving up romance. You can thank the island’s mountainous landscape for that—it’s all about a room with a view of the 2,000-foot high Piton mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the island’s calling card.

There’s adventure to be found too, like exhilarating zip lines high above the island’s rainforest canopy or mud baths in Sulphur Springs, a geothermically active basin of hot springs and fumaroles within the the dormant Qualibou volcano in Soufrière.

Best island for: beaches

In a region characterized by beautiful beaches , Anguilla has the best in the region. Partly for their mesmerizing ribbon of blue water but also because their powdery white sands invariably host only a handful of other beach-goers. There are 33 beaches in total, and while each one I’ve encountered has been memorable, the standouts to see include Cove Bay, Maundays Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Shoal Bay.

Anguilla is also a worthy choice for its culinary scene. Refreshingly there are no chain restaurants on the island. Instead, restaurants and eateries tend to be small family-run businesses. If you visit just one, make it Tasty’s, which serves up a stellar coconut-crusted fish and marinated conch salad by Anguillan chef Dale Carty.

British Virgin Islands

Best island for: island hopping

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) territory has few chain restaurants and no large hotels or mass tourism attractions. Instead, you’ll encounter turquoise waters, lush green hillsides, and distinctive cuisine and culture across the four main islands: Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda.

Hopping from island to island—whether via public ferry or private catamaran—is the characteristic way to explore the BVI. On my last visit I sailed to Jost Van Dyke’s White Bay, home to casual beachfront eateries serving dangerously delicious rum cocktails and locally caught fish. Another fantastic spot is Willy T’s Floating Bar and Restaurant near Norman Island. Moored offshore, the cargo ship has been converted into an ultra-relaxed eatery.

Where to stay: Located on a broad, secluded calm-water bay on Virgin Gorda, Rosewood Little Dix Bay has 80 villas and suites each staffed with a personal butler. The Reef House is one of three restaurants and features farm-to-fork dining with fresh provisions sourced locally.

Best island for: diving

The calm waters surrounding Dominica make it one of the best diving spots in the world. The rainbow-colored seascape is best viewed at Champagne Reef, named for its bubbling waters generated by volcanic thermal springs rising from on the ocean floor. The reef also comprises plummeting cliffs, towering volcanic formations and the remains of a 17th-century Spanish shipwreck.

Another highlight is L'Abym, a dive site located on the island’s southern tip and suited to all skill levels due to Soufriere Bay’s gentle current. Underwater wonders are visible from 20 feet below the surface right down to a 1,500-foot maximum depth. An underwater wall extending its entire length gives the site its name.

Where to stay: Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski is the smartest place to stay on the island. All of the classic hallmarks are here—a full service spa, four swimming pools—but it’s the lush grounds, which incorporate Cabrits National Park, that make this spot memorable.

Best island for: natural beauty

Grenada’s 133 archipelagic square miles are laced with waterfalls, hot springs and tropical rainforests across three main islands: Grenada, Petit Martinique, and Carriacou. Ringed by 45 white- and nine black-sand beaches, the hilly isles are dotted with acres of fruit and spice trees.

One-ninth of Grenada’s land mass is dedicated to national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, best seen on a guided hike of Grand Etang Forest Reserve. Sister Island Carriacou is a worthy day trip too, especially for the top-shelf diving and snorkeling.

Where to stay: Few places capture Grenada's understated magic like the Silversands Grenada resort , found at the sleepy end of the two-mile Grand Anse Beach. The biggest draw here is the 330-foot infinity pool, said to be the longest in the Caribbean, which stretches from the hotel’s entrance all the way to the sea.

Puerto Rico

Best island for: history and culture

There’s a distinct energy to Puerto Rico , one that draws upon a fascinating blend of Hispanic, African, American, and Caribbean culture and history. To see it start in colonial San Juan , the second oldest European-founded city in the Americas. Head to the old town where cobblestone streets are lined with colorful Spanish buildings housing trendy bars, boutique shopping and all-night entertainment.

Hundreds of thousands of Africans arrived in Puerto Rico via forced migration in the colonial era. Their contributions to the island’s culture, art, music and cuisine live on today in Loiza, home to Puerto Rico’s largest Black population. You can witness it via the artwork on display at Samuel Lind Studio, or at the Don Rafael Cepeda School of Bomba and Plena which puts on traditional music and dance workshops.

Lush natural beauty and historic attractions are the hallmarks of this twin-island nation. Most travelers visit both islands, as smaller Nevis is a breezy 20-minute ferry ride from larger St. Kitts. Sightseeing on St. Kitts is best done via the scenic train—the only working railway in the Caribbean—which circumnavigates the island on routes that once transported plantation sugar cane. Another highlight is the Brimstone Hill fortress, built of hand-chiseled stones by enslaved Kittitians and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stand among the fort’s ramparts and cannon while taking in panoramic views of neighboring Saba, Statia, St. Maarten, and St. Barths .

Tiny Nevis’ resplendent landscape is overlooked by 3,232-foot high Nevis Peak, located at its center and visible from virtually every point on the island. Mountainside hiking and ATV tours uncover haunting ruins of colonial-era plantations and sugar mills.

This small British Overseas Territory has the best features of a Caribbean island: coral reefs teeming with life, caves along the shoreline, mountain ranges you can hike and, of course, beautiful beaches. What it lacks is the number of tourists that overrun other islands. 

Don't misunderstand its ranking, Monserrat is an amazing destination. But its size and a volcanic explosion that created a large exclusion zone leave it with fewer attractions than other islands in the region.

Are you ready to be a little confused? The Caribbean Netherlands are three official overseas territories: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. Another British Overseas Territory located very close to the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla is made up of a main island and several small islets that surround it. The experience is pretty much straight out of a brochure, as most of your time will be spent at the beach or on a boat.

Your experience in this British Overseas Territory will largely depend on which of its three main islands you visit. The largest and most frequented, Grand Cayman, is dotted with all-inclusive resorts and can sometimes feel like a beachy Disneyland. That said, this is one of the world's best snorkeling spots and you can find cool places if you manage to escape the snares of tourist traps.

Europeans are attracted to this French overseas department because of its convenience. With French as the official language (though Creole is more widely spoken) and the Euro as currency, Martinique is easy to navigate. 

Still, this isn't anything like mainland France, given its strong indigenous, Black and Creole roots. Visit the pretty gardens at Jardin de Balata, hike up Mount Pelee and relax at one of the various cafes in the capital,  Fort-de-France.

Another French overseas department, Guadeloupe is known for its beaches, its cliffs and its rum. What more could you even ask for?

One of the coolest experiences you'll have here is at the Parc National de la Guadeloupe, famed for its La Grande Soufrièr volcano. As the tallest peak in the Lesser Antilles, the peak offers incomparable views.

The downside to visiting the Caribbean during the summer months is that it is the beginning of hurricane season and hot. You may run the risk of encountering a major storm.

June has more rain than July and August, which are usually sunny months. The summer has higher temperatures (averaging in the mid-to-upper 80s Fahrenheit) and high humidity, which is uncomfortable for some travelers.

Fall The fall months in the Caribbean are still within prime hurricane season and less popular months for tourists. September, October, and November are on the Caribbean shoulder season so there are a few advantages of going just before the high season starts in December. You can get great prices for hotels and airfare during these months and there are fewer people on the islands.

Fall is a great time to look for last-minute getaway deals on resorts and Caribbean cruises.

One bonus of visiting during the fall is the shorebird migration, which takes place as birds make their way from their northern nesting sites to their southern winter sites in South America. This is an opportunity to see dozens of species that cannot be seen otherwise. You should refer to the migration details of the country that you plan to visit to more precisely target the timeframe for that region.

The caution for fall Caribbean travel is that it is still hurricane season . While most days will have mild and comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and less rain than in the summer, there is always a risk of a hurricane or tropical storm. It is best to purchase trip insurance if you plan to travel in the fall.

Winter The winter months of December, January, and February are the best time to visit the Caribbean. These are the ideal months to travel, with the best beach weather, tours in full swing, and sites open on the islands ready to cater to tourists. The winter months have the least rainfall .

The Caribbean islands are an easy travel choice, especially for North American tourists wanting to escape from the snow and cold weather. Flights are frequent to the Caribbean islands, and with so many to choose from, it is easy to book a winter vacation. You will also have an abundance of Caribbean cruise options during these months.

The only downside to booking a Caribbean vacation in the winter is the cost. Since this is high season, you can expect to pay a premium for hotels and resorts, flights, cruises, and tours. Early Availability is also reduced during the popular months, but with so many islands to visit, you should have no problem if you plan several months ahead.

Early January is typically quieter than the rest of the winter after the Christmas crowds have gone home and before people plan winter vacations.

A trip to the Caribbean islands may be just what you need if you're in search of some sun, sand and relaxation. Travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands to see some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Caribbean, including Grace Bay. Home to one of the largest barrier reef systems in the world, this collection of coral islands also offers unforgettable experiences for snorkelers and scuba divers. Whether you choose to spend the bulk of your time on land or underwater, these islands make a wonderful retreat for those seeking maximum comfort in a tropical setting. However, hotel prices can be higher here than in other Caribbean locales, especially during the peak winter season.

Visit St. Lucia for its sprawling chalk-colored beaches, towering volcanic peaks and upscale resorts. You can start your day with a hiking adventure through the Pitons, soak up some midday sun along Reduit Beach and watch the sun set over the Caribbean Sea. You'll want to also save time for a visit to Sulphur Springs, the world's only drive-in volcano. St. Lucia's plethora of romantic luxury hotels, most of which offer incredible views of the Pitons, makes this Caribbean escape especially popular with couples.

"Posh" is the best word to describe the British Virgin Islands. The island country's beautiful coast sets it apart from other Caribbean destinations. The shoreline at Cane Garden Bay and the white sand beaches on Anegada island are stunning. Meanwhile, the boulders and sea pools at The Baths National Park (touted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world) mystify visitors. One of the best ways to see these scenic islands is by yacht or on a boat tour from the nearby U.S. Virgin Islands. Alternatively, you can relax on a beach or by a pool at one of the upscale hotels.

Spring is the time to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, particularly in late April when the boisterous Carnival season on St. Thomas gets underway. Regardless of when you visit, try to spend at least a day enjoying the unspoiled beauty at one of the many beaches along St. John's shoreline, including the popular Trunk Bay beach. Or, visit a fort on St. Croix for a bit of Danish colonial history during your vacation. The best part? Americans don't need a passport to visit these Caribbean islands.

Comprising 32 islands, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has something to offer every traveler. Enjoy time on the biggest island of St. Vincent in its capital, Kingstown, a port city where you'll find a lush botanical garden and fresh fish and produce markets. Then, hop on a boat and sail between the country's other islands for diving, snorkeling, golfing, sunbathing and photo-ops. No matter how you choose to pass the time, a trip to this destination will be one for the books.

One of the most scenic spots in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands is home to premier dive sites, including Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto, as well as plenty of picturesque shorelines such as the world-renowned Seven Mile Beach. For travelers who want to stick to the shallows, Stingray City offers clear water, a sandbar and opportunities to swim with stingrays. Hotel and flight prices tend to be on the lower end during the summer months, so you can enjoy the palm-fringed white sand beaches and serene sea without ruining your vacation budget.

While you'll certainly find the standard Caribbean staples – picture-perfect sandy beaches, verdant golf courses and palatial resorts – you'll also discover that Barbados offers a unique roster of non-beach things to do. Travel here to sample Mount Gay Rum, explore the limestone caverns of Harrison's Cave and the Animal Flower Cave, attend a horse race at Garrison Savannah and dance to calypso tunes. Don't forget to save time for exploring the island's historical plantation houses and exotic tropical gardens.

With 16 major islands and hundreds of islets, the Bahamas derives its appeal from its stunning beaches and Caribbean Sea views. The country's beaches run the gamut from bustling Cable Beach to Pig Beach and Pink Sand Beach (both of which derive their names from their most unique characteristics). After enjoying your fill of the Caribbean sun, explore the Bahamas' expansive protected areas, including Lucayan National Park. St. Kitts garners its popularity in part from the soft sands and buzzing nightlife of Frigate Bay. It hosts excellent festivals, most notably the St. Kitts & Nevis National Carnival (known locally as Sugar Mas). When you need a break from the action, hop on a ferry for a daytrip to the quieter island of Nevis, where you'll find Oualie and Pinney's beaches.

Antigua is home to a wealth of diverse beaches – 365, to be exact. So whether you're interested in grabbing a bite to eat at Valley Church Beach or seeking a more secluded, romantic vacation at Half Moon Bay, you likely won't be disappointed. Plus, Antigua is where you'll find some of the best resorts in the Caribbean. The island also offers historical attractions to recognize Antigua's Colonial past, such as Nelson's Dockyard, constructed by the British Navy using enslaved people for labor, and Betty's Hope, an early sugar plantation.

As one of the ABC islands (along with Aruba and Bonaire), Curaçao sits outside the hurricane belt, meaning you'll find sunny, pleasant temperatures year-round and little threat from swirling storms that can wreak havoc in the Caribbean. The dependable weather and healthy coral reefs (compared to the rest of the Caribbean) make Curaçao a top destination for divers, snorkelers and beach bums. Plus, this Dutch Caribbean locale boasts a lively capital filled with pastel-colored architecture and culturally significant sights, such as a sand-floored synagogue from the 18th century.

Home to towering mountains, dense rainforests, colorful coral reefs and stunning beaches, Jamaica boasts diverse scenery that attracts visitors from around the globe. Adventurous travelers can hike, rock climb or dive while their calm counterparts can lounge on Seven Mile Beach's soft white sand or swim in its clear water. It's perfectly possible to spend an entire trip having fun and relaxing at one of the island's numerous all-inclusive resorts. But for an authentic dose of local culture, head to Kingston (the island's capital) to attend a lively festival, listen to reggae tunes and try local specialties like Blue Mountain Coffee and jerk chicken.

But choosing can be difficult. The whole Caribbean destinations area has more than 7,000 islands, keys, and islets, so I don’t know about you, but choosing the best Caribbean islands sounds like a feat too great for man. 

Narrowing down your options isn’t easy, and that’s where I come in. This is a comprehensive guide to the best islands in the Caribbean , and I promise, there’s an island or romantic vacation for everyone here.

My Selection Criteria for the Best Caribbean Islands 

When I decided to look into the best islands in the Caribbean region, I figured a checklist or selection criteria had always worked well for me, so why not trust this process again? 

To choose the best islands in this part of the world, I considered: 

• You, my dear reader. Every person is different – some want a chilled vacation where they laze and tan about on the beach, while others are into shopping, adventure, or cultural experience. My selection of the best Caribbean islands caters to all kinds of people. 
• How to get there. There are multiple flights from various U.S. cities to these islands, and where there are layovers and needing to take a ferry or boat, it’s more than worth it.

The Caribbean experiences good weather throughout most of the year. However, it can be cooler in December and January, especially in the mornings. Activities and attractions

Looking for buzzy nightlife? If so, popular islands like Trinidad and the Bahamas, where celebrities often visit, might fit the bill. There you’ll find several beachside bars where you can grab a drink. More adventurous types should head to Jamaica , where you can spend time outdoors riding ATVs or ziplining through the forest. If you’re more interested in a quiet vacation, the Turks and Caicos might suit you best. There you can stay at a private beachside villa where you can sunbathe without being seen. The US Virgin Islands is a particularly good place to take children because of its many family-friendly resorts , which include fun activities for all ages.

Getting there

Where are you flying from? If you’re in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, you’re just a short flight from Nassau, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. In fact, depending on what island you’re visiting, you can be there in less than 2 hours. You can also find several flight deals from major cities like New York City to the Bahamas or the Dominican Republic, or from Los Angeles to Jamaica. Hailing a taxi on the Caribbean islands can be expensive, so renting a car is a good option for getting around. If you don’t want to hire a car, many of the islands, including Barbados and St. Lucia, have good public transportation. You can also stay in a walkable neighborhood like Sandy Point in the Virgin Islands, or a beach town like Eagle Beach in Aruba.

For example, Trinidad and Tobago, along with Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, have many budget-friendly hotels to choose from. You can also save money by visiting the islands outside of peak season, typically from September to November. Although staying at an all-inclusive resort might be more costly, it will make tracking your spending in the Caribbean easier, because pretty much everything is part of the package (including food and various activities).

Ocean adventure: British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands are a collection of 50-plus island s with diverse landscapes, serene beaches , and green hillsides. The main four are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, and visitors and residents can journey among them via an extensive system of local ferries.

Not surprisingly, water sports are extremely popular here . The BVI are also home to unique marine sites, most notably the Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda’s north shore. The Baths’ massive granite boulders form sheltered beachfront pools and crevices perfect for exploring, wading, and creating infinite Instagram posts.

Food Fete, the BVI’s premier culinary celebration, returns this year with in-person events across the islands throughout November and December. A highlight will be the Anegada Lobster Festival November 26–28, which includes an island-wide scavenger hunt and tastings focused on Anegada’s spiny lobster, the island’s culinary specialty.

Culture: Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico’s unique heritage combines influences from the Indigenous Taino culture, the island’s centuries as a Spanish colony, and its long stretch as a key port in the transatlantic African slave trade, which profoundly impacted the island’s culture.

“The island’s African legacy manifests itself in all aspects of daily life,” says Dr. María Elba Torres Muñoz, director of the Instituto Interdisciplinario y Multicultural, General Studies Faculty at the University of Puerto Rico. “It is felt and lived in their songs, in the dance, their food, their bodies, their way of speaking, their vocabulary, the way of loving.”

Contemporary visitors can trace Puerto Rico’s African influences through creations on view in seminal collections at the Museo de Arte de Ponce , Museo de las Américas , and Museo de Historia de Caguas , or at the Samuel Lind Studio in San Juan’s colonial district. They can also taste it in dishes such as mofongo, bacalaitos, and pasteles that are based on African cuisine. Try authentic crab-based Puerto Rican cuisine at El Burén de Lula in Loiza, home to Puerto Rico’s largest Black population, a legacy of its 16th-century settlement by Yoruba people from the West African countries of Nigeria, Benin, and Togo.

Romance: St. Lucia

Lush natural beauty, soaring mountain landscapes highlighted by the UNESCO World Heritage Pitons , and multi-hued sunsets make St. Lucia a paradise for couples and an ideal Caribbean romance destination.

The scenery creates a dreamy backdrop for St. Lucia activities that bring lovers together: Picture detoxifying mud baths and relaxing hot-bath treatments at the volcanic Sulfur Springs in Soufrière and strolls through the Botanical Gardens’ flowery canopy. Couples can also opt for more adrenaline-inducing pursuits, from helicopter tours to zipline and horseback excursions.

Couples planning destination weddings will find buy-out options here so they can create an on-property “bridal bubble.”

Family-friendly: Dominican Republic

Infinite stretches of coconut-palm-lined, white-sand beaches, and upscale resorts are de rigueur in the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana district, the Caribbean’s all-inclusive resort kingdom and an easy win for families. Dozens of U.S. flights connect daily with the Punta Cana International Airport, and although the phrase “all-inclusive” can raise some travelers’ eyebrows, the combination of accommodations, cuisine, amenities, facilities, and activities makes this type of resort a hassle-free option, especially for family trips. You don’t need to be stuck on campus the whole time though; resorts’ tour desks can arrange off-property excursions, such as coastal catamaran tours.

Properties range from family-themed to adults-only and include branded properties familiar to sun-and-fun-seeking U.S. travelers.

Nickelodeon Punta Cana is a haven for families with its seven flexible accommodation categories, including two- and three-bedroom “super villas” measuring 2,200 square feet. Kids (and their parents) can cool off at the Aqua Nick water park. Plaza Orange features live entertainment and family-friendly movie premieres, while kids can meet their favorite Nickelodeon characters throughout the day at Character Central.

The “ecochic” Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda is at the other end of the design spectrum. Located on pristine Playa Esmeralda, a barely touched coastal region surrounded by tropical forest, the property emphasizes sustainability across four distinct boutique “villages,” each offering customized environments, activities, and accommodations. It’s a family-friendly option, thanks to kid-focused amenities, but it also caters to parents who may need the occasional break at one of its adults-only areas.

For grown-ups looking to ditch the kids entirely, the D.R. has plenty of adults-only properties, including TRS Cap Cana Hotel , where they’ll find the Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellness Centre, an Ibizan-style beach club, and à la carte eateries serving Argentinian and Japanese fare. Or they can check into Breathless Punta Cana and burn off a few calories under tall palms with beachside fitness classes, or pump up the jam at the resort’s swim-up bar and multi-level Freestyle Pool, featuring live DJ music and curated cocktails.

Bonus: Belize for Adventure

While Belize is not an island, its prime coastal location on the Caribbean Sea makes it feel like one. What’s more, the temperate weather, many direct flights from the U.S., and the fact that the country’s official language is English, all make Belize a great—and often overlooked—warm-weather vacation option. The country is a wonderland of natural attractions, with extensive cave systems, lush jungles, and world-class dive sites. Combined with diverse cultures and historic treasures, Belize stands at the forefront of Caribbean adventure destinations.

Belize is a nexus for Maya, Caribbean, Garifuna, and even Mennonite cultures. English is the official language, although Belizean Creole is the most widely spoken.

The Maya civilization flourished in the region from 1500 B.C.E. through 1200 C.E., leaving behind archaeological sites now open to visitors. Several are located within Belize’s caves, which are accessible via guided tours that can range from easy walks to challenging excursions that require spelunkers to squeeze, crawl, climb, rappel, and swim through different sections.

Few places compare to the Caribbean when it comes to sun, sea, sand and surf.

The bluest of blues and turquoise waters make for some of the world’s best beaches . It is paradise. No hurries, no worries, just relax – it’s no wonder around 30 million people a year head to the Caribbean for a respite.

While the Dominican Republic , Jamaica , Puerto Rico , and the Bahamas are hot spots, the Caribbean is also home to locales without hordes of tourists and some where there is more wildlife than people. So, if you’re in the mood for the beauty without the bustle, here’s where to go.

1. Kamalame Cay, the Bahamas

Best for a luxurious private island getaway 

Some things are worth waiting for. Get to Nassau , hop on a commuter flight, take a cab to the dock and board a water taxi that takes you to Kamalame Cay, a private island in Andros in the Bahamas . The resort is near the world’s third-largest barrier reef with acres of coconut palm groves and vegetation that competes with the bluest sea for what is most awesome.

If you want an island escape, this might just be it. The bungalows, villas, cottages, and beach houses are spread out for miles. Wheel around in your golf cart on white sand roads and it’s mostly you and Mother Nature with just enough people to have a little atmosphere. Activities include everything from deep-sea fishing and kayaking to playing tennis and cycling. If you’re in chill mode, watch a movie at the alfresco cinema, climb in a hammock along the beach or head to the Bahamas’ only overwater spa. You’re also in good hands at the Great House restaurant, where the conch fritters, Asian barbecue spareribs, and the coconut green vegetable curry are crowd-pleasers.

Make sure you venture back to Andros, with its underwater cave systems and the highest concentration of blue holes in the world. One of the most popular is Captain Bill’s Blue Hole in  Blue Holes National Park . After a short drive, make your way through the pine forest, get up your nerve and jump from the platform into the fresh water. For a quieter experience, head to the  Androsia Batik Factory where you can learn about the art of batik-making and try your hand at it.

2. Bluefields, Jamaica

Best for solitude

When you think Jamaica, Montego Bay and Negril probably come to mind. Skip the masses and head to Bluefields on the south coast instead. You can still arrange dive tours, deep-sea fishing, glass-bottom boat cruises but along this hilly stretch of coast, you’re more likely to hear the cicadas’ concert than anything loud and late.

While you’re in the area, take a tour of the Bluefields Organic Fruit Farm where you'll learn a bit about organic farming and Jamaican agricultural history. Decide which island treats – perhaps coconuts, pineapples, naseberries, avocados, gineps, star apples or garden cherries – you want to take back to your hotel or the beach to enjoy.

Also nearby in Belmont Falls in a small yard off the main road is the monument that pays tribute to reggae legend Peter Tosh who spent his early years there. Tosh, one of the original Wailers, in reggae music history is not far behind icon Bob Marley. For an authentic Jamaican experience, mix it up with locals at Bluefields Beach Park  where, at the weekends, families will be picnicking and the reggae music will be blasting.

Planning tip: If after all that peace and solitude you want to liven things up a little, Negril is an hour away. Here you'll find hipster haunts like  Rick’s Café where you can dance and watch folks jump from cliffs into the sea.

3. South Caicos, Turks and Caicos

Best for finding your zen

Providenciales  gets all the glory, but South Caicos is a Caribbean gem worth your time. Fly into Providenciales and take a 30-minute flight to South Caicos. Location is everything. Don’t look for bars and mega resorts, but wild donkeys and salt flats with pink flamingos.

Let nature soothe your soul. There are two beaches here with possible dolphin- and humpback whale-sightings. Visit Iguana Island and the aquarium, a protected reef ideal for snorkeling, and get a glimpse of local life in old town Cockburn. For fun and fantastic food, make your way to Triple J’s, a backyard barbecue restaurant only open on the weekends. It's a friendly spot where the music is pumping. Fill up on jerk pork, chicken, ribs, grilled lobster, fish and conch, and of course peas and rice.

Take an excursion to Long Cay, part of the Admiral Cockburn Land and Sea National Park, a protected area full of ospreys, egrets, herons and more. Long Cay is also where you’ll find tons of Rock Iguanas. South Caicos is typically pretty windy and there are many flat water and bay kiting locations, so kiteboarders will have plenty of reasons to be psyched.

Planning tip: Consider spending a day in Providenciales. There are new hot spots like the  BLT Steakhouse at the Ritz-Carlton and the uber-luxe  MRVL Spa  for next-level pampering. 

Best for diving

Bonaire , one of the ABC islands ( Aruba , Bonaire and Curaçao ), doesn’t get the buzz of the other two. But divers know this part of the Dutch Caribbean is where the action is, with nearly 90 dive sites, coral reefs, and sea caves. Iguanas, parrots, and other critters call Bonaire home, and  Gotomeer is a saltwater lagoon on the island’s northern end where you’ll see flamingos.

There’s fun to be had at Washington-Slagbaai National Park , be it hiking to the tallest peak at Mt Brandaris, cliff-jumping into turquoise waters at Boka Slagbaii or chilling in the tide pool at Boka Kokolishi. Windsurf and kayak through mangroves. For a unique golfing experience, play on Bonaire’s natural golf desert course (where wild goats and donkeys roam). When hunger calls, you can find everything from a food truck on the beach to fine dining in Sebastian’s .

5. Nevis, St Kitts and Nevis

Best for hikers

Nevis , in the Leeward Islands, is one of the Caribbean’s best kept secrets. The smaller of the dual-island nation of  St Kitts and Nevis , its mystique is the inactive volcano, mountains, often shrouded in mist, and the Nevis Peak at more than 975m (3200ft). The beaches are beautiful and uncrowded where wild donkeys, goats, and green vervet monkeys roam. Take an adventurous climb up Mt Nevis or a less intense hike to rainforest waterfalls.

Don’t miss  the Botanical Gardens of Nevis , home to tropical plants from around the world and stunning artwork. The  Nevis Equestrian Centre offers rides that include beaches, trails, and villages. The fishing is good in these parts too, where barracuda, sailfish, and blue marlin are plentiful.

Dine at The Rocks that sits 300m (1000ft) above sea level on the grounds of the  Golden Rock Inn , where you can enjoy magnificent sea views, cascading ponds, and lush gardens. For a history lesson, there’s Hamilton House, the Georgian style building in Charlestown where Alexander Hamilton was born and raised, now the Museum of Nevis History .

Consider staying at the  Four Seasons Resort  on Pinney’s Beach. Sit seaside, nestled by rocks watching the sunset at the resort’s Mango restaurant. Another good choice is  The Hermitage  at the foot of a rainforest covered mountain.

Planning tip: Spend a day on the sister island of St Kitts where you can hike Mt Liamuiga Volcano and check out  Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park .

6. Dominica

Best for nature lovers

Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, Dominica is one of the most unique Caribbean islands. Nicknamed “The nature island of the Caribbean”, the thrills are loggerhead turtles, whales, hot springs, boiling lakes, mountains, waterfalls, and black sand beaches. 

Morne Trois Pitons National Park is a national treasure with spots like Trafalgar Falls . Morne Trois Pitons is an active volcano, one of nine in Dominica. Trek the park’s trails with views of mountains and the rainforest. Kayak and snorkel in  Soufriere-Scott’s Head Marine Reserve . Best for bird-watchers

Trinidad is beloved for its iconic carnival, but sister island Tobago is often overlooked. This less-traveled paradise is a must for bird-watchers. Tobago has one of the highest densities of bird species in the world, with more than 200 varieties. Tobago’s Unesco World Heritage Site,  Main Ridge Forest Reserve is the oldest protected forest in the western hemisphere, with nine trails to keep hikers happy. 

You'll hear great music in the birthplace of the steel pan drum. Soak up the sounds on a Sunday night at the legendary street party,  Buccoo Sunday School in Buccoo. Those with a sweet tooth might want to book a tour of the  Tobago Cocoa Estate . The island's best beaches include Buccoo Bay and Englishman’s Bay, or cool off with a bold jump into Argyle Falls, Tobago’s highest waterfall. 

8. Canouan, St Vincent and the Grenadines

Best for turtle lovers

Here, tortoises outnumber people. What you will find plenty of on this 3.5-mile island in  St Vincent and the Grenadines , is boats, incredible ones at the  Sandy Lane Yacht Club . Canouan has bragging rights for being surrounded by the Caribbean’s largest living coral reef and there’s good fly-fishing and kitesurfing here too. Check into the  Mandarin Oriental, Canouan and you may feel like you’re in a private-island sanctuary, a secret escape, with just 26 suites and 13 villas on the 1200-acre estate that’s on Godahl Beach. Spend time on the 18-hole golf course or relaxing in the spa. Snorkeling in lagoons and hiking up Mt. Royal make for more fun.

I've been to 20 Caribbean islands — these are the 5 I'd return to and the 2 I'd skip despite having great experiences.

• After visiting 20 islands in the Caribbean , I have lots of favorites and a few I wouldn't return to.
• St. Lucia offers wellness activities, fun nightlife, and great food.
• Although I enjoyed my time on Grand Bahama, this island left me wanting more.

There's a misconception that all Caribbean islands are the same. However, as someone who's been traveling to the Caribbean for almost two decades, I've found that each island has its own distinct food, festivals, and cultural traditions.

After visiting 20 Caribbean islands, I can see why the area is such a hot spot for tourism. In fact, travel to the Caribbean is already off to a strong start this year, with many destinations seeing an uptick in visitors compared to 2023 .

As someone who's spent a lot of time in the Caribbean, these are the five islands I'd love to return to and the two I'd skip.

St. Lucia offers wellness activities and great food.

Though St. Lucia is typically billed as a romantic destination , I visited on a solo trip and had a blast exploring the island.

Some of my favorite activities included a mud bath in Sulphur Springs, a rum and chocolate tour, and an afternoon boat ride past The Pitons.

St. Lucians also have some great street food and love to have a good time. During my stay, I headed to the lively Friday night Gros Islet street party for grilled conch and fried fish straight off the boat.

Dominica is great for hiking and natural attractions.

Nicknamed " the nature island ," Dominica is one of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets.

One of my favorite excursions was a hike to Trafalgar Falls, a pair of stunning waterfalls about a 20-minute drive from the island's capital city, Roseau.

I also rode horseback on the island's black-sand beaches and floated on an inner tube through Titou Gorge, a cave with a hidden waterfall and swimming hole.

St. John has gorgeous beaches.

I spent my 15th wedding anniversary on St. John, the smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands. One of the highlights of my stay was a beach day at Trunk Bay.

The beach is located inside Virgin Islands National Park on St. John, and though there's a small entry fee, it's worth every penny. The beach is framed by lush mountains, and towering palm trees dot the wide, sandy shore. In short, it's paradise.

St. John isn't a hub for partying or late-night entertainment, but the island's gorgeous sunsets and natural setting are ideal for honeymoons and special anniversary trips.

Grenada is a snorkeling hot spot with a unique national park.

During my stay on Grenada, I encountered lots of warm and inviting locals, who would strike up conversations and ask how I was enjoying my visit.

Besides enjoying the popular Grand Anse Beach, I booked a day tour to Grand Etang National Park to check out Grand Etang Lake, a freshwater lake surrounded by a lush rainforest.

I ended my stay on Grenada with a snorkeling trip to Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park to see the submerged sculptures.

Turks and Caicos are great for decompressing on the beach.

There's a reason Turks and Caicos are a magnet for celebrities and socialites, but you don't have to be an A-lister to enjoy the islands.

Providenciales is the most populated island in Turks and Caicos. Provo, as some locals call it, offers a laid-back, tranquil beach vacation. Most hotels on Provo are located along Grace Bay, a picture-perfect stretch of pearly white sand and turquoise water.

Water sports like jet skiing, snorkeling, and clear-bottom kayaking are popular, but I was content to spend most of my days alternating between reading on the beach and cooling off in the pool.

However, Grand Cayman was one of the priciest islands I’ve visited.

Grand Cayman has a lot going for it: beautiful resorts, delicious food, and a flight from Miami that's under two hours.

The soft white sand and sparkling turquoise water of Seven Mile Beach have also helped make Grand Cayman a popular vacation spot .

But when I visited, I experienced a bit of sticker shock since US currency doesn't go as far as it does on other islands. The Caymanian dollar has a fixed exchange rate, and one Caymanian dollar is worth $1.21 USD.

I've visited more affordable islands with equally stunning beaches like Klein Curaçao Beach in Curaçao, Crane Beach in Barbados, and Palm Beach in Aruba.

Grand Bahama left me wanting more.

One of my first trips to the Caribbean was to Grand Bahama via a ferry from Fort Lauderdale . My husband and I stayed on the island for about a week, filling up on fresh conch and visiting the Port Lucaya marketplace.

While I enjoyed the laid-back stay, I've found that other Bahamian islands have more to see and do.

If you want to be closer to the action, skip Grand Bahama for New Providence, which is home to top-notch restaurants and hotels, historic landmarks like Queen's Staircase, and the annual Junkanoo parade.

12 Safest Caribbean Islands to Visit in 2024

A trip to a Caribbean island is like being transported to another world. You’re surrounded by peaceful and majestic waves, exotic flora, and gorgeous views. In a few short days, you forget all about school, work, and taxes.

But there’s one crucial step to remember in preparation for your trip; not all Caribbean islands are safe . For instance, the dual-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago is incredibly beautiful, but also a dangerous place with high crime rates .

No worries though, there are plenty of safe Caribbean Islands such as:

• Antigua and Barbuda
• The Cayman Islands
• St. Barts (Saint-Barthélemy)
• The British Virgin Islands
• Saint Lucia
• Turks and Caicos
• Sint Maarten (Saint-Martin)
• Saint Kitts and Nevis

These islands share two distinct wellbeing concerns:

• The hurricane season : In the Caribbean, the period between June and November is the rainy season. In this season, storms may quickly turn into catastrophic hurricanes. This makes June – November the worst time to visit the Caribbean .
• Insect-borne diseases : Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya are commonplace all over the Caribbean. To avoid them, make sure your lodgings are insect-proof and always carry an insect repellent with you.

Still, there are nuances in the safety restrictions that vary across the islands. How safe are the roads? Are the Caribbean islands LGBTQI-friendly? Should you worry about getting ripped off? Let’s find out.

What are the Safest Caribbean Islands to Travel?

1. anguilla.

The US Department of State puts Anguilla in Level 1 threat category, which means that there’s little to no threat present to tourists. The advisory deems it safe for tourists to proceed by exercising normal caution: staying away from non-central places during the night, not carrying too much cash on their person, drinking responsibly, and not petting or poking any wildlife, no matter how cute they seem .

Similarly, statistics show that there’s little crime on the island except for people dealing or using narcotics, but this is not common. The island, especially the tourist-condensed areas, is safe to walk around both during the day and night.

Anguilla is part of Barbados. According to the Barbados Country Security Report issued by the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, travelers should have no concerns about their safety.

Are you concerned about the drinking water quality in the country? According to the Barbados Country Security Report, the tap water in Barbados is potable.

Lastly, although same-sex practices are forbidden by law in Barbados as an act of serious indecency, there has been no official criminalization of LGBTQI relations in recent years. That said, public acts of affection might draw stares from the locals.

2. Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda is a sovereign island state located in the eastern parts of the Caribbean. According to the US Department of State , exercising normal caution is enough for safety on this island because it’s in the Level 1 threat category.

The country’s crime rating on Numbeo may be on the rise, however, these criminal activities typically occur in poverty-stricken areas, away from the beaches and tourist-condensed zones, so you have nothing to worry about.

In other words, crime on this particular island doesn’t target tourists.

If you have the means, the best way to get to it is certainly by a cruise ship. These ships bring you straight to the safest coasts of the island, such as the English Harbour or Jolly Harbour.

The safest way to travel and explore other beaches on the island is by ferries and water taxis.

The US Department of State urges tourists to be careful when they’re driving or walking on major roads. The roads of the island are in poor condition, drivers are unpredictable, and sometimes, animals wander onto the roads.

Not all taxis are registered in Antigua and Barbuda, and some unlicensed drivers try to extort money from tourists. So, whenever you take a taxi, check the driver’s license first.

In Antigua and Barbuda, same-sex relations between men are forbidden by law. However, this law doesn’t extend to LGBTQI tourists who have a marriage certificate. Still, there’s a chance that LBGTQI individuals might experience verbal assault and harassment if they engage in PDA (public displays of affection).

Bonaire is located in the Leeward Antilles section of the Caribbean. It’s a small island with a population of less than 23,000, a responsive police force, and enforcement guided by Dutch laws.

Although the island’s crime index of 37.50 seems relatively high for an island that small, the travel advisories have a relaxed approach.

The United States’ official travel advice suggests that there’s little to no crime in Bonaire. As such, the island is regarded as a Level 1 threat category, where you and your belongings will be safe as long as you don’t leave any valuables unattended.

According to Canada’s official travel advisory , the only real trouble you may face in Bonaire is petty crimes such as purse snatching and pickpocketing. So, the advisory urges its citizens to take normal security precautions.

Once you’re on the island, you can join boat tours and take taxis or minivans to explore. Taxis and minivans are typically safe means of transport. If you rent a car, make sure you’re careful when approaching turns and intersections because trees and vegetation on the island aren’t driver-friendly – they tend to cover traffic signs to cause whatever minor disturbance they can.

On a side note, there are two other islands in the same archipelago: Sint Eustatius and Saba. Both these islands are as safe as Bonaire, though they entertain fewer tourist attractions.

4. The Cayman Islands

Although Hollywood makes the Cayman Islands look like a hub for retired villains, it’s one of the safest tourist destinations in the Caribbean.

The US Department of State’s official travel advisory regards the islands under the Level 1 category, where taking normal precautions guarantees your safety. Similarly, according to Numbeo , the country has a low crime index of 32.45/100, and it’s safe to explore it day and night.

Additionally, according to the OSAC’s Cayman Islands Country Security Report , the overall crime rates have been decreasing recently. Plus, there are no criminal activity in the Cayman Islands targeting tourists.

Ferries are a great way to explore the islands, see pristine crystal caves, venture to the stingray city, go snorkeling or scuba-diving, or explore the beaches, coves, reefs, land, and the water that’s home to gorgeous starfish, and occasional shipwrecks .

However, the OSAC reports that every year, American citizens drown during scuba-diving sessions. The council’s report warns tourists that they should not show off in potentially dangerous watersports and always consult their instructors.

On another note, the road conditions on the Cayman Islands are fine, so you are at liberty to travel around by car, bike, or a rental vehicle. Plus, women and LBGTQI people don’t experience any problems.

Of course, all that comfort and safety comes with a price: the cost of living in the Cayman Islands is higher than the cost of living in the United States.

Grenada is another island country located in the West Indies territory of the Caribbean Sea. The island has so far seen French colonialism, British colonialism, and an invasion by the United States’ military forces. Despite all that intervention, the country is surprisingly stable and safe. It’s also breathtakingly beautiful.

Like all the islands we listed above, the US Department of State deems Grenada to be under the Level 1 threat category, meaning there are no safety concerns for tourists – as long as they don’t fall asleep on the side of the road because they drank too much and lost their whereabouts, which would be a safety concern anyway. Additionally, the island has a very low crime index of 20.94, and it’s very safe, both day and night.

However, the OSAC Grenade Country Security Report identifies St. George’s, the capital city of the country, as a low-threat location for crimes directed against US citizens. While you might want to avoid the city, the threat is only minimal, and you’re not likely to have any negative experiences.

Although Grenada has a fine public transportation system, the OSAC urges tourists to exercise caution if they take a bus or taxi during the night.

On a final note, same-sex relations between men are prohibited in Grenada. However, the OSAC reports that the government doesn’t enforce this particular law. There are no laws on same-sex conduct between women.

6. Montserrat

Like the Cayman Islands, Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory, but it doesn’t get as much hype as the former since Montserrat’s terrain is much more rugged, thus limiting tourism. However, Montserrat is also one of the safest Caribbean islands, if not the safest.

According to the US Department of State , the island is a no-threat territory under its Level 1 category. In recent years, no reports have been made concerning criminal activity against tourists.

The only problems highlighted in the official travel advisory are insect-borne diseases, such as Dengue and Chikungunya, that are commonplace all over the tropical zone. An insect-repellent can easily prevent infection.

In addition to official reports, statistics show that the country has little to no crime. Of course, the lack of a wider sample size affects the veracity of these reports.

Similarly, many travel websites and blogs claim that the latest homicide case in the country dates back to 2008. However, we couldn’t find an official report on that, so here’s hoping!

Yet, in 1995, a bigger and more natural threat shook the life of Montserratians, causing two-thirds of the population to flee to Britain: the dormant Soufriere Hills volcano erupted , rendering more than half of the country’s land inhabitable. In 2003 , there was another eruption that partially modified the island’s topography.

Nowadays, the government is building a new town, airport, and port away from the volcano, though more than half of the island is still an exclusion zone. So, if you visit Montserrat, make sure you observe the volcano from a safe distance.

7. St. Barts (Saint-Barthélemy)

According to a Jamaican news site , St. Barts has been voted as the safest island in the Caribbean.

The problem is that neither the US Department of State nor crime statistics websites such as Numbeo have this lovely island in their databases. Luckily, Canada’s official travel advisory confirms Jamaican reports that criminal activities are indeed scarce in St. Barts.

As there’s no public transportation system on St. Barts, you’ll need to rent a car or a scooter to get around. Although the roads are mostly in good shape and safe, they’re quite narrow, so drive carefully. Additionally, most of these roads run near cliffs and have sharp turns, mandating drivers to be extremely cautious.

The waves and the overall swimming conditions in St. Barts are less friendly than other popular destinations in the Caribbean. Riptides are common and waves can get violent, so pay attention to beach flags and enter the water only when the flag is green. If it’s red or black, stay away from the waters as these indicate violent waves or predator presence in the water. A yellow flag, on the other hand, means only experienced swimmers should swim.

8. The British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands neighbor the US Virgin Islands, to the east of Puerto Rico and the west of Anguilla. They consist of four main islands and fifty small ones, and unlike the US Virgin Islands which have a high crime index , the crime rate in the British Virgin Islands is quite low .

According to the US Department of State’s travel advisory , trips to the British Virgin Islands are completely safe. This British Overseas Territory is in the Level 1 threat category with no reported crimes targeting tourists except for petty ones such as pickpocketing.

As long as you don’t leave valuable items on the beach when swimming or carry too much cash on your person, you’ll be fine.

However, there are still some things that you need to be careful about when you’re on the British Virgin Islands.

For instance, the roads have very few signs, so exercise extra caution when you’re driving. Especially in the mountains, the roads are steep, have sharp turns, and run alongside cliffs with little or no barricade.

Additionally, local drivers are pretty unpredictable and reckless. If you just hop on a painted crosswalk, thinking that the driver will stop, you may be putting yourself in danger. In the backcountry, livestock have a habit of wandering on the roads. Of course, we’re not blaming them – but you need to be extra careful under the circumstances.

Although the road conditions are fine throughout the island, some roads (especially those on Tortola Island) get quite slippery at times. The country has no roadside assistance, so, to prevent any accidents, we recommend that you rent a four-wheel vehicle and not a scooter or a bicycle.

9. Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia has a worldwide reputation as one of the safest islands in the Caribbean.

The United States official travel advisory asks tourists to exercise only normal caution, which is the lowest threat category. Canada ’s travel advisory advises tourists to “take normal security precautions” and assures safety. The UK advisory urges people to “maintain at least the same level of personal security awareness” as they would in the UK.

However, staying safe in Saint Lucia, especially if you wander far from your lodgings, is a bit trickier than on the islands we talked about before. That’s because this island has a higher crime index (61.58) than the others, and it’s not safe to walk around towns, villages, and mountains during the night.

More alarmingly, the Canadian advisory establishes that crime has been on a dramatic rise. So, it’s best not to wander alone or drive around Saint Lucia after dark.

In addition, you should be vigilant when drawing money from an ATM because all the travel advisories we consulted attest that ATM frauds are common on this island.

When you’re mingling with the locals and listening to their troubles, you might start feeling sympathy towards their political cause as well. But here, political demonstrations occur on a regular basis, and they can get violent quite quickly. If you’re caught up in one, you might get arrested, too.

Lastly but not least importantly, St. Lucia isn’t an LGBTQI-friendly tourist destination. Same-sex physical affection in public spaces might result in verbal attacks, harassment, and assault, which makes its safety status increasingly doubtful.

10. Turks and Caicos

The case of Turks and Caicos’s eight main islands is the reverse of Saint Lucia. The US Department of State’s official advisory urges citizens to exercise increased caution, meaning – don’t leave the hotel area, restrict nighttime activities, and avoid contact with strangers. The country is in the Level 2 threat category.

However, the Numbeo crime index suggests that the Turks and Caicos archipelago is much safer than Saint Lucia.

Additionally, both Canada ’s and the United Kingdom ’s official advisories establish that most criminal activities on these islands occur away from tourist-condensed areas. However, these advisories also warn their citizens not to get too far away from their hotels and not to travel solo during the night.

One point that all these official travel guides emphasize is that you shouldn’t leave your drinks or food unattended, and you shouldn’t accept food or drinks offered by strangers. Spiked food and drinks are commonplace in Turks and Caicos.

LGBTQI people may visit Turks and Caicos with peace of mind because same-sex relations are legal in the country. In inland villages, showing same-sex affection in public might result in stares and verbal harassment, but it’s unlikely to go further than that.

11. Sint Maarten (Saint-Martin)

Sint Maarten is Dutch, Saint-Martin is French, and Saint Martin is how the rest of the world wants to refer to this island. The island is divided in two: one part belongs to the Kingdom of Netherlands, and the other part to France. But since most of the flights to the island land in the Dutch part, we’re going to stick to calling it Sint Maarten.

Similar to Bonaire, the other Dutch island on our guide, Sint Maarten falls in the Level 1 threat category according to the United States Department of State . Crimes against tourists are extremely rare on this island. And even when they occur, they’re “crimes of opportunity,” where, hypothetically speaking, the potential criminal sees that you have left your phone on the table and gone to the bathroom, and is tempted by how easy it is to swipe it.

The crime rates of the island support the official US report. Sint Maarten has a lower crime index than Bonaire at only 26.33 – the chance of encountering any kind of crime is assessed as low or very low .

In case you want to drive around the island in a rental, keep in mind that the roads are narrow and, during the night, dimly lit. Yet, as long as you’re careful, there is no risk in driving at night. You can also walk safely under the moonlight.

Like all the Dutch islands in the Caribbean, Sint Maarten is LGBTQI-friendly.

12. Saint Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis is a two-island sovereign state that’s officially referred to as the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis.

According to the United States Department of State , Saint Kitts and Nevis only presents a Level 1 category of threat, meaning it’s safe unless you forgo all the normal security precautions you usually take in your everyday life. The worst crimes that can be potentially committed against tourists in these islands are petty ones such as larceny, pickpocketing, and purse snatching.

In addition, crime levels suggest that it’s very unlikely for you to encounter criminal activities. It’s completely safe to walk around during the day, and you’ll be fine as long as you don’t wander far from your lodgings by yourself during the night – even if you’re in dire need of a brooding walk around town.

However, according to the Canadian advisory , Saint Kitts and Nevis is not the best or safest Caribbean destination for swimming. The beaches don’t have any warning flags or signs, the dexterity and vigilance of rescue services are questionable at best, and the waves do get violent. So, unless you have full confidence in your swimming skills (or are with someone whose swimming skills are unquestionable), it might not be worth the risk.

If you drive on this island, slow down and be extra cautious when approaching turns and intersections. The roads aren’t in good condition, there’s little to no signage, and local drivers might be more reckless than you because they know the routes much better than you.

On a final note, same-sex relationships between men are forbidden in the country, while there are no laws regarding women. However, according to the US travel advisory, the enforcement of this law is rather relaxed .

Caribbean Safety Recap

There’s little or no criminal activity targeting tourists on these islands, the natural environment and road conditions are friendly in comparison to other islands, and the pirates of the Caribbean already looted these locations ages ago.

However, this doesn’t mean that they’re earthly replicas of paradise where you can relax, leave your valuables unattended, and accept questionable cocktails from strangers. On the contrary, you still need to take normal safety precautions such as carrying small amounts of cash on your person and using ATMs during the day; not straying further from your lodgings during the night; keeping an eye on your valuables, drink, and food at all times; and, of course, respecting the locals.

Additionally, the period between June and November is usually hurricane season in the Caribbean, where your safety depends on the mercy of the weather gods. And you need to make sure you have an insect-repellent with you. These tropical insects won’t know who they’re messing with.

The US Government rates Turks & Caicos currently as a “Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution” destination. This means there is undoubtedly a significant level of crime in some areas of the country, but not a destination that is necessarily one that US citizens should avoid traveling. I recently spent eight nights in the Caribbean with Atlas Ocean Voyages aboard their yacht, World Voyager.

The itinerary was incredible with a different slice of sun-kissed paradise waiting for us each day. What I didn’t realise was how diverse this region of the world can be.  I’ve broken down the top five stops on our Caribbean voyage for you to consider when booking your Caribbean cruise with Panache Cruises.

Roseau, Dominica You mustn’t worry if a thunderous rain cloud awaits you in Roseau , the capital of Dominica—a rainforest needs rain. We dock in-port. A coastal traffic jam awaits, snaking its way through the city’s narrow streets, made more narrow by the vendors selling all kinds of tropical fruits all the way along them—cliché coconuts, fresh yams, golden-yellow mangoes and all other sorts of tropical delicacies. We start to trudge through the traffic. This is a busy city—but we're not interested in it. It’s the verdant, green and beating heart of the island that we want—and soon our car starts to slope up the dizzying mountains. The driver explains that the hills are so steep that the minibus drivers have to change their brakes every three weeks or so.

Actually it’s not long before the poor guy’s own brake cable snaps. We're stranded.

While we wait to be picked up by another friendly Dominican driver the rain starts to fall. And when it rains, it pours—but this isn’t rude English rain that’s here to ruin your day. It’s a pleasure to be rained on by Dominican rain, washing away at least a little of the jungle humidity. Our hero arrives and before long we’re back slaloming along the road all the way to what we’re looking for—waterfalls. This, afterall, is a Land of Waterfalls—and the Land of Hummingbirds, Crabs, Volcanoes, Boiling Lakes and Everything Else. The waterfalls—Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls, Spanny Falls and Jacko Falls—were worth every drop of rain.

We even had the chance to swim in two of them. Back on board the ship I made a promise to myself—I'll be back in Dominica one day.

Mayreau, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

There’s nothing much to Mayreau and that’s why I like it.

With no port to dock in, we drop anchor five minutes from the shore. A white strip of paradise beach backed by palm trees awaits, and there was nobody—not another soul—on the beach. Walking along it I can see the other side of the island through the lush palm trees and a town (a village, a settlement, or just a couple of houses?) at the nearest end to the pier. Children play on a rope swing in the sun next to a local tempting the few passers-by into the only gift shop.

I realise that we save up all year to visit places like this, but the village folk live there with not much but everything they need: A ladder up a coconut tree, a couple of ramshackle bars made from beer crates, a place to play dominoes and that rope swing. There’s not a car in sight. This is true island life in a real paradise.

Mayreau is also interesting because it’s a gateway to Mopian, a surreal mound of sand with a single straw parasol on it. Our catamaran captain has the cheek to call it an island, but it offers incredible snorkelling opportunities on the vibrant surrounding reef. Turtles, stingrays and tropical fish are plentiful.

Terre-de-Haut, Guadeloupe Terre-de-Haut is a culture shock. This hip and happening town shares the same name as the island of highlands around it. It’s been well looked-after by the French—a cosmopolitan town that charges Euros in the local Carrefour supermarket, provides free local WiFi and features a strip of busy bars, cafes, coffee shops, souvenir shops, ice cream parlours—whatever you need. It’s full of beautiful people, tanned by the loyal sun, zooming about in golf buggies and on mopeds. We consider scaling one of the hills to Napoleon’s Fort that was once used to defend this playground, but we’re enamoured with the vibe. We sit to drink a €10 mocktail each in one of the many bohemian bars. The waiter speaks five languages perfectly and I’m not surprised.. I realise that I could easily be sitting in Cannes, Nice, St. Tropez or somewhere similar; Terre-de-Haut is a perfect slice of the French Riviera on a Caribbean island.

Gustavia, St. Barthelemy  Gustavia offers a very similar cosmopolitan charm to Guadeloupe. So it should, it was part of the Guadeloupe islands way up until 2003. The difference is that St Barts feels even more exclusive with mega-yachts, rather than fishing boats, docked in the harbour and with designer stores such Louis Vuitton, Dior and Hermès standing in the sun as soon as I disembark the tender. With not much money to spend and without a moped to explore the green heart of this island, we head to the stunning beach of Shell Beach. 

Why do they call it Shell Beach? Well instead of sand, shells make up the beach. This creates a particularly paradisiacal feel—the waters are even more blue than you can imagine. With sun beds from a nearby bar costing upwards of €150—we decide to lay on the beach and snorkel. I’ll admit that we spent so long here that I experienced my first sunburn of the trip. St. Barts is brilliant.

Little Bay, Montserrat Little Bay is reachable by tender in five minutes and nothing much in the way of a town—a few bars and a couple of restaurants. This is the land that time forgot—or, being a British colony since  at least the one that Great Britain forgot. The capital city of Montserrat, Plymouth, was damaged by a hurricane in 1989 before a volcanic eruption in 1995 struck the killer blow. It hasn’t been rebuilt since. The result is a beach that is half-rocky, half-black and and like nothing I had ever seen before. Head inland to find the fascinating, but tragic history, where the volcanic half of the island is inaccessible unless you’re with a licensed guide. The whole town of Plymouth is buried up to its roofs by lava and pyroclastic flow. What wasn’t buried was burnt. As a stark contrast, the rest of the island is wild rainforest. A haunting but beautiful place, Montserrat offers something very, very different.

While the roads between the airport and the Jamaica's best and most famous beach resorts  are likely well maintained, outside of the major cities there are some rough conditions to maneuver. Tight, windy roads and potholes are common. One hard sink into a section of eroded road can equal a flat tire and significant frustration. Jamaican drivers are well-versed in the mountainous terrain, however, and they swiftly navigate the roads, often swerving to miss potholes, entering the opposite lane as they pass bicycles, and facing drivers head on narrow roads.

In addition, the previously British colony of Jamaica maintained some of the motherland's influence. Like the United Kingdom, Jamaicans drive on the left side of the road. Yes, that also means the steering wheel is on the right side of the car. For people who've never driven, passed, turned, and parked on the left side of the highway, the journey can be a treacherous experience. Add in inadequate signage and the risk of getting lost on the way back to your favorite Jamaican all-inclusive resort , and the idea of renting a car becomes even less appealing.

Set Yourself Up For Success In Jamaica

Like all essential travel tips for a Caribbean vacation , the decision to rent a car in Jamaica after knowing the dangers requires a good plan. Start by finding a reputable rental company. Then ensure you have valid insurance coverage. This can be available through your own automobile insurance, your credit card coverage, travel insurance, or the car rental company. Also read and understand the rental agreement before signing.

Before heading out, grab a local map. The mapping app on your phone won't work if you lose cell coverage or your phone battery dies. Also avoid traveling at night or traveling alone. Where to see northern lights Saturday night, what times they will be visible

A severe geomagnetic storm powered by five coronal ejections from the sun will result in a vivid aurora borealis. Here are some tips for seeing it this weekend.

This article has been updated to include a recap of Friday’s aurora activity and Saturday’s forecast.

One of the strongest geomagnetic storms in two decades hit Earth on Friday afternoon, with more activity continuing through the weekend.

Friday’s storm already brought beautiful northern lights displays as far south as Mexico. It also disrupted some power grids and radio and GPS communications, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Geomagnetic storms occur when the sun sends a punch of charged particles and parts of its magnetic field to Earth, often through eruptions from its surface called coronal mass ejections. This severe geomagnetic storm — rated a Level 5 out of 5 — resulted from numerous coronal mass ejections this week, some of which are catching up with one another as they hurtle through space.

Forecasters said the sun has launched additional coronal mass ejections , which could extend geomagnetic activity and displays of the northern lights through this weekend and into early next week.

Both Saturday and Sunday nights could offer more celestial viewing, though early Sunday morning and Sunday evening could be more promising, with displays as far south as Friday night if forecasts hold.

Here’s what you need to know about your chances to see the aurora and threats to satellite systems.

Where are the best places to see the northern lights this weekend?

The northern lights appeared unusually far south in the Northern Hemisphere on Friday night. People snapped photos in Italy, southern Switzerland and India. In North America, people reported sightings in Florida, Southern California and even Mexico.

In the Southern Hemisphere, aurora were photographed in Chile , Argentina and New Zealand , where they are known as aurora australis or the southern lights. Activity was exceptionally strong Friday night to Saturday morning Eastern time, hitting a Level of 5 out of 5.

Current NOAA models show geomagnetic storm activity will initially be less intense Saturday night. By the pre-dawn hours Sunday, however, storm activity may increase markedly, offering early risers a memorable display of the northern lights, especially after around 4 a.m. Eastern. The exact timing of the increase in storminess is very uncertain, though.

If the storm activity reaches a Level 4 or 5 early Sunday, which NOAA indicates is possible, the northern lights may become visible again in most of the United States.

When the storm activity increases, the aurora will tend to be most vibrant in northern areas and will become more faint to the south — in some places only visible through cameras.

“Cellphones are much better than our eyes at capturing light,” Brent Gordon, chief of NOAA’s Space Weather Services Branch, said in a news conference Friday. “Just go out your back door and take a picture with a newer cellphone, and you’d be amazed at what you see in that picture versus what you see with your eyes.”

If severe to extreme geomagnetic storm activity (Levels 4 and 5) lasts into the evening Sunday, the northern lights may continue to be visible unusually far south for yet another night.

Will the aurora be blocked by clouds?

Even if geomagnetic activity is high, clouds can block out the light show. Unfortunately, considerable cloud cover will blanket the Northeast and south-central United States, although some gaps in the cloud canopy are probable. Clear skies are most likely over the Midwest, Southeast and Western United States.

If you are in a cloud-free area, make sure you find a dark sky location away from city lights.

What will the aurora look like near me?

Not all auroras look the same. Some are undulating bright green and purple curtains, and others are a diffuse red and orange glow. The colors and structure of the aurora appear differently depending on the latitude and altitude.

Auroras are created when solar particles and plasma temporarily disturb Earth’s magnetosphere. Some solar particles get trapped along Earth’s magnetic field lines into the upper atmosphere. Here, they excite nitrogen and oxygen molecules and release photons of light in different colors. Excited oxygen atoms shine red when they are more than 120 miles above the surface and glow green from 60 to 120 miles. Excited nitrogen atoms give off pink or purple hues below 120 miles.

Dancing green or purple auroras are typically seen at higher latitudes. Lower latitudes usually see more red auroras because red occurs at higher altitudes and can be seen further away from the poles. If you’re in the mid-latitudes (in Virginia or Arizona, for example), your aurora may appear more red than those in Canada or Finland.

Will this affect communications systems or the power grid?

A severe geomagnetic storm can cause issues with power systems, spacecraft operations, radio communications and even pipeline systems, if not appropriately prepared for.

“Our role is to alert the operators of these different systems so that they’re aware and can take actions to mitigate these kinds of impacts,” Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference Friday.

Steenburgh and his colleagues work with grid operators across North America to ensure high-voltage transmission lines can withstand the incoming surge of energy from the sun. Over past decades, engineers have built systems that can protect power lines rapidly and keep them online during geomagnetic storms.

Geomagnetic storms can also affect satellite and radio communications, sometimes interfering with signals transmitted in our ionosphere. Anyone using high-frequency radio in the aurora viewing zone may experience some disruptions, said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Space Weather Prediction Center. Under some circumstances, the influx of solar particles can cause low-Earth orbiting satellites to drag lower into the atmosphere.

For the most part, individuals should not be affected or take extra precautions beyond what they might for a typical severe weather storm. If a power outage does occur, people should make sure they have batteries, weather radio and a generator, if necessary.

“They don’t need to do anything out of the extraordinary, if they’ve already got these measures taken care of, because these events are very rare,” Dahl said.

Solar Storm Intensifies, Filling Skies With Northern Lights

Officials warned of potential blackouts or interference with navigation and communication systems this weekend, as well as auroras as far south as Southern California or Texas.

A dramatic blast from the sun set off the highest-level geomagnetic storm in Earth’s atmosphere on Friday that is expected to make the northern lights visible as far south as Florida and Southern California and could interfere with power grids, communications and navigations system.

It is the strongest such storm to reach Earth since Halloween of 2003. That one was strong enough to create power outages in Sweden and damage transformers in South Africa.

The effects could continue through the weekend as a steady stream of emissions from the sun continues to bombard the planet’s magnetic field.

The solar activity is so powerful that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which monitors space weather, issued an unusual storm watch for the first time in 19 years, which was then upgraded to a warning. The agency began observing outbursts on the sun’s surface on Wednesday, with at least five heading in the direction of Earth.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday morning.

For people in many places, the most visible part of the storm will be the northern lights, known also as auroras. But authorities and companies will also be on the lookout for the event’s effects on infrastructure, like global positioning systems, radio communications and even electrical power.

While the northern lights are most often seen in higher latitudes closer to the North Pole, people in many more parts of the world are already getting a show this weekend that could last through the early part of next week.

As Friday turned to Saturday in Europe, people across the continent described skies hued in a mottling of colors.

Alfredo Carpineti , an astrophysicist, journalist and author in North London, saw them with his husband from the rooftop of their apartment building.

“It is incredible to be able to see the aurora directly from one’s own backyard,” he said. “I was hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of green on the horizon, but it was all across the sky in both green and purple.”

Here’s what you need to know about this weekend’s solar event.

How will the storm affect people on Earth?

A geomagnetic storm watch or warning indicates that space weather may affect critical infrastructure on or orbiting near Earth. It may introduce additional current into systems, which could damage pipelines, railroad tracks and power lines.

According to Joe Llama, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, communications that rely on high frequency radio waves, such as ham radio and commercial aviation , are most likely to suffer. That means it is unlikely that your cellphone or car radio, which depend on much higher frequency radio waves, will conk out.

Still, it is possible for blackouts to occur. As with any power outage, you can prepare by keeping your devices charged and having access to backup batteries, generators and radio.

The most notable solar storm recorded in history occurred in 1859. Known as the Carrington Event, it lasted for nearly a week, creating aurora that stretched down to Hawaii and Central America and impacting hundreds of thousands of miles of telegraph lines.

But that was technology of the 19th century, used before scientists fully understood how solar activity disrupted Earth’s atmosphere and communication systems.

“That was an extreme level event,” said Shawn Dahl, a forecaster at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. “We are not anticipating that.”

Unlike tornado watches and warnings, the target audience for NOAA’s announcements is not the public.

“For most people here on planet Earth, they won’t have to do anything,” said Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

The goal of the announcements is to give agencies and companies that operate this infrastructure time to put protection measures in place to mitigate any effects.

“If everything is working like it should, the grid will be stable and they’ll be able to go about their daily lives,” Mr. Steenburgh said.

Will I be able to see the northern lights?

It is possible that the northern lights may grace the skies this week over places that don’t usually see them. The best visibility is outside the bright lights of cities.

Clouds or stormy weather could pose a problem in some places. But if the skies are clear, even well south of where the aurora is forecast to take place, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone. The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Another opportunity could be viewing sunspots during the daytime, if your skies are clear. As always, do not look directly at the sun without protection. But if you still have your eclipse glasses lying around from the April 8 event, you may try to use them to try to spot the cluster of sunspots causing the activity.

How strong is the current geomagnetic storm?

Giant explosions on the surface of the sun, known as coronal mass ejections, send streams of energetic particles into space. But the sun is large, and such outbursts may not cross our planet as it travels around the star. But when these particles create a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field, it is known as a geomagnetic storm.

NOAA classifies these storms on a “G” scale of 1 to 5, with G1 being minor and G5 being extreme. The most extreme storms can cause widespread blackouts and damage to infrastructure on Earth. Satellites may also have trouble orienting themselves or sending or receiving information during these events.

The current storm is classified as G5, or “extreme.” It is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface — that is about 16 times the diameter of Earth. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Why is this happening now?

The sun’s activity ebbs and flows on an 11-year cycle, and right now, it is approaching a solar maximum. Three other severe geomagnetic storms have been observed so far in the current activity cycle, which began in December 2019, but none were predicted to cause effects strong enough on Earth to warrant a watch or warning announcement.

The cluster of sunspots generating the current storm is the largest seen in this solar cycle, NOAA officials said. They added that the activity in this cycle has outperformed initial predictions .

More flares and expulsions from this cluster are expected, but because of the sun’s rotation the cluster will be oriented in a position less likely to affect Earth. In the coming weeks, the sunspots may appear again on the left side of the sun, but it is difficult for scientists to predict whether this will cause another bout of activity.

“Usually, these don’t come around packing as much of a punch as they did originally,” Mr. Dahl said. “But time will tell on that.”
