Taylor Swift opened the Eras Tour at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona — which rebranded itself as "Swift Cit y" for the March 17 and 18 concerts — with a triumphant return to live performance as the first act in the history of that venue to sell out two nights on the same tour.

By that point, she'd already broken the all-time record for most concert tickets sold by an artist in a single day and passed Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour as the highest-grossing tour in history by a female artist.

And Swift rose to the occasion , leading her band through a marathon 44-song set that lasted more than three hours while delivering on her promise of "a journey through all of my musical eras."

Are you ready for it? Taylor Swift ‘s Eras Tour is finally here.

The 52-date trek kicks off Friday night in Glendale, Ariz., at State Farm Stadium with openers Gayle and Paramore. This marks Swift’s first tour since the Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018, as her 2020 Lover Fest was canceled before it even began due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, Swift has released three studio albums — “Folklore” and “Evermore” in 2020 and “Midnights” in October 2022 — in addition to re-recording “Fearless” and “Red” (which both came with bonus tracks) in 2021.

How Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Conquered the World

The pop star’s record-breaking, career-spanning show has dominated the summer, commanding attention and whipping up demand at a level thought unachievable in a fragmented age.

As Taylor Swift rolled into Los Angeles this week, the frenzy surrounding her record-breaking Eras Tour was already in high gear.

Headlines gushed that she had given $100,000 bonuses to her crew. Politicians asked her to postpone her concerts in solidarity with striking hotel workers. Scalped tickets were going for $3,000 and up. And there were way, way too many friendship bracelets to count.

These days, the center of an otherwise splintered music world can only be Taylor Swift.

The pop superstar’s tour, which is now finishing its initial North American leg with six nights at SoFi Stadium outside Los Angeles, has been both a business and a cultural juggernaut. Swift’s catalog of generation-defining hits and canny marketing sense have helped her achieve a level of white-hot demand and media saturation not seen since the 1980s heyday of Michael Jackson and Madonna — a dominance that the entertainment business had largely accepted as impossible to replicate in the fragmented 21st century.

“The only thing I can compare it to is the phenomenon of Beatlemania,” said Billy Joel, who attended Swift’s show in Tampa, Fla., with his wife and young daughters.

In a summer of tours by stars like Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Morgan Wallen and Drake, Swift’s stands apart, in numbers and in media noise. Although Swift, 33, and her promoters do not publicly report box-office figures, the trade publication Pollstar estimated that she has been selling about $14 million in tickets each night. By the end of the full world tour, which is booked with 146 stadium dates well into 2024, Swift’s sales could reach $1.4 billion or more — exceeding Elton John’s $939 million for his multiyear farewell tour, the current record-holder.

Swift has now had more No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 over the course of her career than any other woman, surpassing Barbra Streisand. With the tour lifting Swift’s entire body of work, she has placed 10 albums on that chart this year and is the first living artist since the trumpeter and bandleader Herb Alpert in 1966 to have four titles in the Top 10 at the same time.

“It’s a pretty amazing feat,” Alpert, 88, said in a phone interview. “With the way radio is these days, and the way music is distributed, with streaming, I didn’t think anyone in this era could do it.”

But how did a concert tour become so much more: fodder for gossip columns, the subject of weather reports , a boon for friendship-bracelet beads — the unofficial currency of Swiftie fandom — and the reason nobody could get a hotel room in Cincinnati at the end of June?

“She is the best C.E.O., and best chief marketing officer, in the history of music,” said Nathan Hubbard, a longtime music and ticketing executive who co-hosts a Swift podcast . “She is following people like Bono, Jay-Z and Madonna, who were acutely aware of their brands. But of all of them, Taylor is the first one to be natively online.”

Swifties have chronicled the stream of celebrity fans who have turned up each night: Julia Roberts, the New York Jets’ new quarterback Aaron Rodgers, even Flavor Flav of Public Enemy. But Swift has also made each show a news event by adding two “surprise songs,” often with headline-grabbing guests. On the July day that she put out a music video featuring Taylor Lautner, an ex-boyfriend, the actor backflipped across the stage in Kansas City, Mo., and paid Swift effusive tribute — “not just for the singer you are,” Lautner said, “but for the human you are.” The crowd registered its approval with an earsplitting roar.

The Taylorpalooza extends to every level of the news media, which began the coverage cycle by chronicling Swift’s ticketing fiasco last November, when fans — and scalpers’ bots — crushed Ticketmaster’s systems, leading to a heated Senate Judiciary hearing . Since then, seemingly no nugget of Swift news has escaped coverage, from the stars in the stands to oddities like a Seattle concert that, according to one researcher, shook the ground with an intensity equivalent to a 2.3-magnitude earthquake .

Music critics have portrayed the Eras Tour as showing Swift at the top of her game as a media-savvy, big-tent talent, a pop star with a knack for grand spectacle as well as the polished artistry of a classic songwriter.

Shania Twain, the country-pop star whose career in some ways prefigured Swift’s, caught the Las Vegas stop of the Eras Tour, a 44-plus song production that goes as long as three and a half hours. She praised Swift’s “beautiful balance” of high-tech stagecraft and intimate performance segments. “I have to applaud her,” Twain said in a telephone interview. “As a performer, I know that work that goes into it.”

The power of Swift’s fan army — and fear of crossing the star, or even appearing to — has kept nearly all of the press about the tour sunny. Though some fans (and parents) balked at the ticket prices and challenges of securing seats, most frustration was directed squarely at Ticketmaster, not Swift. After a few weeks of headlines romantically linking Swift with a frontman some fans considered to be problematic, reports spread in the celebrity pages that they had split. (Swift’s representatives declined to comment for this article.)

For fans, the shows are a pilgrimage, and a rediscovery of the joys of mass gatherings. Flights are packed with Swifties, and travelers trade stories and compare outfits — drawn from looks associated with Swift “eras” — in stadium corridors and parking lots. In Kansas City, the comedian Nikki Glaser was attending her eighth show, a commitment that she estimated has cost her $25,000.

“This year I decided not to freeze my eggs,” Glaser said. “I’m going to put that money toward the thing I love most in the world, which is Taylor Swift.”

Before Eras, Swift hadn’t been on tour since 2018. And her catalog has grown by seven No. 1 albums since then, fueled in part by three rerecorded “Taylor’s Versions” of her first LPs — a project hailed by Swift’s fans as a crusade to regain control of her music, though it is also an act of revenge after the sale of Swift’s former record label, a move that, she said , “stripped me of my life’s work.”

“Folklore” and “Evermore” expanded her palate into fantastical indie-folk and brought new collaborators into the fold: Aaron Dessner from the band the National and Justin Vernon, a.k.a. Bon Iver, rock-world figures who helped attract new listeners.

The other major tour this year that is enticing fans to book transcontinental flights, and to show up costumed and in rapture, is also by a woman: Beyoncé, 41, whose Renaissance tour is a fantasia of disco and retrofuturism. Like Swift, she is also a trailblazing artist-entrepreneur, maintaining tight control over her career and fostering a rich connection with fans online. Together with Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” a critique of the patriarchy told in hot pink, they are signs of powerful women ruling the discourse of pop culture.

But in music, at least, the scale and success of Swift’s tour is without equal. Later this month, after completing 53 shows in the United States, she will kick off an international itinerary of at least 78 more before returning to North America next fall. Beyoncé’s full tour has 56 dates; Springsteen’s, 90. (Recently, Harry Styles wrapped a 173-date tour in arenas and stadiums, grossing about $590 million.)

Outside Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, fans posed for selfies and shared their ticketing ordeals. Esmeralda Tinoco and Sami Cytron, 24-year-old former sorority sisters, said they had paid $645 for two seats. A stone’s throw away, Karlee Patrick and Emily DeGruson, both 18 and dressed as a pair in angel/devil costumes after a line in Swift’s “Cruel Summer,” sat “Taylorgating” at the edge of the parking lot; they said they had paid $100 for parking but couldn’t afford tickets.

As Swift’s opening acts finished, the crowd rushed in. Glaser, the comedian, later said that of the eight shows she had been to, her favorites were the ones where she had brought her mother — and converted her to Swiftie fandom.

“Everyone is in love with her,” Glaser said her mom told her after one show in Texas. “Now I get it.”

Taylor Swift 'Eras Tour' Complete 2024 Setlist: New 'TTPD' Songs Included

Taylor Swift updated her "The Eras Tour" setlist following the release of her 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department."

The "1989" hitmaker adjusted her 44-song setlist to accommodate and include some of her newly released songs. Per Business Insider , the updated show now has 46 songs.

Here are the songs that await Swifties who will attend her upcoming tour stops:

Swift's seventh studio album was released in August 2019. It was her first album following her departure from Big Machine Records. For the updated "Lover" set, she debuted a new body suit.

Taylor Swift always keeps her promises. Just a couple weeks after unveiling a list of Latin American dates for her bestselling Eras Tour and pledging to schedule even more across the globe, the 33-year-old pop star has now announced a slew of international shows for the trek in 2024.

Swift first confirmed that the Eras Tour would be going global earlier this month, when the “Anti-Hero” singer announced a Latin American leg of shows in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina also featuring support from Carpenter, whom Swift called a “sweet angel princess.” “Really thrilled to tell you this!!” the pop star wrote in a post to her social media accounts at the time. “Mexico, Argentina and Brazil: We are bringing The Eras Tour to you this year!” she wrote on Instagram at the time.

“LOTS more international dates to come soon, promise!” she added.

Ten days later, Swift added three additional shows to the Latin America leg, which kicks off in early August and picks up in November.

In addition to the new shows, Swifties also have a new album to look forward to in the coming weeks. As announced in May, Swift’s third studio album, Speak Now, will receive the “Taylor’s Version” treatment. Re-recordings of the set’s original tracks drop July 7, as do previously unreleased “Vault” tracks featuring Hayley Williams and Fall Out Boy.

Over a year into Taylor Swift’s Eras tour , she has found ways to keep the show fresh and new for those who have been waiting since she opened in Phoenix, Arizona in March 2023 to see her. Since the tour began in the United States last year, Swift has released two rerecorded albums —  Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)  and  1989 (Taylor’s Version)  in addition to a brand-new double album,  The Tortured Poets Department.

Every show on the Eras Tour involves an acoustic set where Swift performs at least two songs custom to that night’s show. At first, she wouldn’t allow herself repeats unless she messed up the lyrics to a song, but now, she has done away with that rule and gotten more creative by combining songs in mashups and playing up to four in a segment. The first song or three take place on guitar, and then she shifts to piano for the second half before diving beneath the stage to resume the setlist – which has since contracted and expanded to include a  Tortured Poets Department  era and set .

From the moment it broke Ticketmaster, the world knew Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour would become the biggest of the year. Now, it’s on track to become the biggest pop music event of the next two years thanks to multiple international legs that wrap up back in North America next fall. Swift has not only been performing to sold out crowds in each stadium, but also to more thousands of ticketless fans hovering outside of venues or watching on social media from home. 

She’s not even close to halfway through the tour, but she has already gone above and beyond her fans’ expectations thanks to multiple surprises, major announcements and special guest appearances that have made the tour’s first leg across the United States a major success. In honor of that historic run — and in chronological order — here are the best moments of Swift’s Eras Tour so far. Baby, let the games begin.

We Find Out The Show Is 3 Hours Long

Along with the thousands of fans packed into Glendale’s State Farm Stadium for the first night of Eras Tour, there were even more watching the show from grainy Instagram and TikTok Lives. Swifties around the globe had no idea what to expect from the pop star’s new live show; she had released four albums of original music since her last tour in 2018, as well as re-recorded versions of two previous albums. Would she focus on 2022’s Midnights ? Would Folklore and Evermore even work in a stadium setting? Everyone was in for a treat as the night unfolded into 3.5 hours of Swift running through sets for all but her debut album (which did get some love during the surprise song portion that night). It felt like a fever dream for fans, making the Ticketmaster debacle even more worth the anxiety than anyone could have anticipated. –B.S.

Her ‘First Bridge of the Evening’ Speech

Every night this summer, just to seal our fate, Taylor has made a celebration out of the “Cruel Summer” bridge. As she declares, just a few minutes into the show: “We have arrived at the very first bridge of the evening! Now I would prefer that we cross it together!” A perfect invitation from a songwriter who has always made a specialty of her middle-eights. Later in the show, another highlight is when she does the “Illicit Affairs” bridge—not the rest of the song, just the “Don’t call me kid! Don’t call me baby!” chant in the middle. Hey, any artist can score a hit in the middle of a tour. But the trick is crashing the Top Ten with a fan-fave deep cut that’s four years old. Fans always wondered why “Cruel Summer” wasn’t a single—it sounded like the great lost hit from  Lover , the would’ve-could’ve-should’ve summer jam of 2019. But a year later, the world was in  Folklore  Mode and “Cruel Summer” got left behind—that hit that slipped away like a bottle of wine. Until now. Just in time for Eras Tour, she finally dropped it as a single. “Cruel Summer” blew up into her 41st Top Ten hit in July, reaching #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Pop Airplay chart. A very Swiftian redemption arc for this perfect pop banger—ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard? –R.S.

Taylor’s Speech Defending Her Love For ‘Evermore’

Evermore is to Folklore as Radiohead’s Amnesiac is to Kid A ; it’s the sister album that will always be pitted against its elder sibling. And there’s no Swiftie like an Evermore Swiftie. The album’s true fans will defend it to the grave, champagne problems and all. Fans were absolutely convinced Swift didn’t like Evermore when she didn’t commemorate its one-year anniversary on social media. But Taylor is always listening, and she wasted no time debunking this rumor, addressing it on night one of the Eras tour in Glendale, Arizona. “We’re currently in the middle of the Evermore album,” she told the crowd after “Marjorie.” “Which is an album I absolutely love, despite what some of you say on TikTok.” How’s that for some closure? –A.M.

The Lengthy Ovations After ‘Champagne Problems’

It happens every night. Taylor sits alone at the piano for “Champagne Problems,” her first solo performance of the night—and it always brings out the beast in the crowd. It’s a moment where the audience literally stops the show to scream, for minutes on end, leaving poor Taylor with no way to move on. In L.A. last week the ovation kept going for 8 minutes. (Never change, L.A.—you are the Dorothea of cities.) Since she doesn’t do a standard encore break, this is the crowd’s chance to grab the mic and go full blast—an unorthodox but totally organic moment. Like so many details of the Swiftian live experience, it’s a fan-created phenomenon that takes on a life of its own. Marcus Mumford Sings ‘Cowboy Like Me’ In Las Vegas

Taylor knew “Cowboy Like Me” was special the minute she wrote it — who else could get away with a line like “Some tent-like thing” and make it sound magical? She knew she was sitting on a 21st century “Desperado,” beloved by everyone from Maya Hawke to Maggie Rogers . The Western lullaby was recorded at Marcus Mumford’s Scarlet Pimpernel Studios, and he even provided backing vocals. So it was only right that he join her on the Evermore track’s live debut, early into the tour in Las Vegas on March 25. “Would you sing ‘Cowboy Like Me’ with me?” she asked. Mumford, who’d already performed it more than 50 times on his own tour , happily obliged .–A.M. 

Taylor Replaces ‘Invisible String’ with ‘The 1’

In Swiftworld, few things happen without a reason, hidden or not. So when the fate-brought-us-together ballad “Invisible String” vanished from the Eras Tour setlist, replaced by the perfectly wistful masterpiece “The 1,” from the same album, it probably should’ve raised more eyebrows in the moment. Instead, it took certain headlines about Swift’s personal life, a week later, to make full sense of the very welcome swap.- -B.H.

The ‘And Take Her Home’ Note In ‘The 1’

Nobody, absolutely nobody, was complaining that “The 1” wasn’t heartbreaking enough. But for the live version, Taylor throws in The Note, for the kill. As she sings “The 1” on the mossy roof of her Folklore Cottage of Solitude, she adds that extra spice to the line, “You meet some woman on the internet and taaake her home.” As far as we’re concerned, this note is now “The 1” canon. When Aaron Dessner from the National came out in Tampa to bless the Eras Tour stage for the first time, Swifties in the stands and watching on live streams at home knew they were all in for a devastating set of Dessner-produced tracks. From an acoustic version of “The Great War,” to the poignant piano ballad “Mad Woman,” Dessner and Swift shined together on these stripped down versions of beloved songs. But the real kicker was “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve,” with Dessner jamming along on guitar and the entire Nissan Stadium screaming with Swift as she sang, “give me back my girlhood/ it was mine first!.” It was truly a moment for the history books. –M.G.

Taylor announces ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)’ in Nashville

Nashville turned purple when Swift decided to announce the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) during her Eras tour stop in her hometown on May 5. In typical Swiftian fashion, the singer used a play on words to reveal the album would be in July in the midst of her performance. “I think rather than me speaking about it, I thought I would show you, so if you would direct your attention,” she told an audience of screaming fans , while directing their attention to Nissan Stadium’s screens which featured the album cover and its release date. But Swift wasn’t done: She surprised fans by launching into a performance of “Sparks Fly.” And, oh, did they fly. –I.K.

Nashville Also Gets The First Rain Show of The Eras Tour

There is arguably nothing more Swiftian than rain; it’s a signature element to her lyrics. Swift used to play “Should’ve Said No” in a makeshift downpour on stage, and her first headlining rain show at Gillette Stadium is a thing of Swiftie folklore (it apparently inspired the fan-ode “Long Live”). Everyone was eagerly refreshing their weather apps to see if they’d be the Eras Tour stop to witness Taylor come in with the rain. Nashville night 3 got especially lucky. After lightning delayed the start of the show for several hours, Swift weathered the storm along with her hometown crowd. She was so drenched she compared herself to a “river otter” — and still put on one hell of a show that didn’t end until nearly 2 a.m. –M.G.

Tour Opener Phoebe Bridgers Sings Vault Duet ‘Nothing New’

On the first night in Nashville , Swift invited Phoebe Bridgers (“one of my favorite artists”) to perform their Red (Taylor’s Version) collaboration “Nothing New,” and emotions were running high. They were clearly both psyched to be sharing the stage: right before the song’s prophetic bridge, Swift laughed and mouthed “oh my god” while Bridgers shook her head in disbelief at the fact she was singing with one of her idols. At that moment, more than a few concertgoers had their inner child healed. It was so powerful that Swift snuck their performance into the set during every tour stop that Boygenius opened. –M.G.

The ‘Karma’ Video Premiere During the First New York Show

Fans attending Swift’s three night stint at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (which technically also counts as her New York tour dates, for surprise-song purposes) knew they were in for some unexpected highlights even before the first show kicked off. Leading up to that night, Swift announced the release of Midnights (Til Dawn) , an expanded version of her 2022 album that included a remix of “Karma,” featuring buzzy new rapper Ice Spice. In the middle of the show, Swift did more than shout out the new release: she decided to debut the “Karma” video in the middle of her set. Swift and her dancers sat on the stage to watch the video, which premiered on YouTube soon after. –B.S.

Jack Antonoff Appears For A Surprise ‘Getaway Car’

After Aaron Dessner made appearances earlier in the tour to perform with Swift during her surprise song sets, it was only a matter of time before Jack Antonoff did the same. Fittingly, it occurred on the first night of her New York shows, which were in Antonoff’s home state of New Jersey. Even better, his appearance ticked “Getaway Car” off the surprise song list, with Antonoff playing guitar on the Reputation cut and fan favorite. –B.S.

Ice Spice Appears Onstage For ‘Karma’ Remix

A “Karma” video premiere wasn’t enough for Swift as she celebrated Midnights (Til Dawn) over the course of her weekend in New York. She added an extra dose of excitement to show closer “Karma” when she invited Ice Spice out to perform the remix with her three nights in a row. The pair were a match made in pop heaven on stage together, with the 23-year-old rapper commanding the crowd perfectly next to the headliner. It didn’t take a lot for the two stars to make “Karma” a massive success, so it came as no surprise that the song shot up the charts a week later. –B.S.

Two Lucky Audiences Get to Hear ‘Clean’

Back in February, Gracie Abrams told Rolling Stone that her favorite 1989 track was “Clean.” Fast forward to April 1st: Taylor Swift made good on a request from Abrams to play the track after her first night opening shows on Swift’s stadium run. “I will remember this feeling in my bones for the rest of my life,” Abrams wrote on Instagram. And if “Clean” stans weren’t satisfied enough, Swift played the song again on the second night of her New Jersey stop, claiming with a smirk that she “could have played it in a higher key” as a way to avoid violating her rule about not repeating surprise songs. The First Performance of ‘Dear John’ In 11 Years

With the surprise songs section of the Eras Tour, fans were anxiously awaiting the night when Swift would break out “Dear John,” her scathing anthem allegedly written about her ex John Mayer. With the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) , Swiftie anticipation hit a fever pitch. Then, on June 24 in Minneapolis, they got their wish— hearing it live for the first time in 11 years . But with the performance of the song, Swift also had a disclaimer for her fans: She reminded them to consider “kindness and gentleness” when interacting online. “I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19 except the songs I wrote,” Swift added. “So what I’m trying to tell you is that I’m not putting this album out so you should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 billion years ago.” In short, there’s no reason to be “mean.” –I.K.

Opener Gracie Abrams Gets Invited To Sing ‘I Miss You I’m Sorry’ With Taylor

What’s better than two surprise songs at an Eras Tour show? Three! At her July 1 date in Cincinnati, Swift not only debuted Evermore track “Ivy” and Reputation cut “Call It What You Want” for the first time in five years, but she shared the stage with Gracie Abrams and Aaron Dessner for a performance of her tour opener’s track “I Miss You, I’m Sorry.” While Abrams’ ballad is stunning on its own, Swift stole the show by alternating verses with the Good Riddance singer. –I.K.

That Taylor Lautner Cartwheel

Even though he is one of Swift’s better exes, Lautner’s inserting himself into the Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) conversation on social media (remember #prayingforjohn?) wasn’t a perfectly smooth process. But that didn’t stop Swift from bringing him out in Kansas City for a very cool and very full circle moment punctuated by a cartwheel that would have turned a less-athletic person’s bones to dust. Lautner told The Today Show that the cartwheel wasn’t planned, making it all that more impressive. Despite the seeming spontaneity of his on-stage acrobatics, the move did have some resemblance to the flip Lautner did in the 2010 flick Valentine’s Day , in which he co-starred with Swift. A reach? Maybe, but it’s very cool to see Lautner and Swift still in touch (Swift called Lautner and his wife “close friends”). Just maybe cool it on the #prayingfor TikToks.- -W.A.

‘I Can See You’ Video Premiere In Kansas City

During her tour stop in Kansas City on July 7 — the release date of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) — Swift surprised fans by premiering the heist-themed music video for “I Can See You,” which featured Taylor Lautner, Joey King and Presley Cash trying to steal her third album. It was one of the meta reunions for the “I Can See You” stars — King and Cash co-starred in the music video for “Mean,” while “Back to December” was allegedly about Swift’s breakup with Lautner. Of course, fans went wild when Swift sang Lautner’s praises to the Kansas City audience: “He was a very positive force in my life when I was making the ‘Speak Now’ album, and I want to say he did every single stunt that you saw in that music video. He and his wife have become some of my closest friends, and it’s very convenient because we all share the same first name.” –I.K.

‘Long Live’ Is Added To The Setlist

The Eras Tour is as grandiose and impactful as any victory lap we’ve seen an artist put on in recent memory. The tour pulls on the nostalgia heartstrings — yes, there’s a percentage of fans who who tapped in when Folklore dropped, but there’s a great many more diehards who’ve been through middle school, high school, and college with Ms. Swift. That’s why hearing the “tell them how the crowds went wild/tell them how I hope they shine” in “Long Live” hits so hard. Even cooler: Swift is using the koi fish guitar from the Speak Now era . It’s funny to think about Swift writing such an anthemic ode to her career…in 2010. If only she knew there were thousands of sold out shows, a handful of Grammys, and hundreds of broken records to come. “Tell ’em how the crowds went wild” — they still are. –W.A.

‘Last Kiss,’ July 8th

When “Last Kiss” finally had its moment as a surprise song on July 8, you could hear the cries of Speak Now girlies heard round the world. Officially named “the saddest song [she’s] ever written” by Ms. Fountain Pen herself, Swift performed the somber track on her famous koi fish guitar and was so excited she forgot the lyrics and had to start over several times. Swift finally sang “that July 9th/The beat of your heart” with a small smirk because it was, in fact, July 8th that night — a sweet nod to the heart-wrenching moment in the song. –M.G. 

Haim Appears Onstage For ‘No Body, No Crime’ In Seattle

On July 22, Swift’s murder ballad “No Body, No Crime” got its shining moment in Seattle when the singer brought out Haim to perform on their collaboration. Even better, their Evermore highlight wasn’t even one of the surprise songs of the evening: It was just a setlist swap for “Tis the Damn Season.” While it might be a coincidence—though with Swift it rarely is—they joined forces at Lumen Field exactly one year and a day after Swift shocked London fans by teaming up with the sisters for a “Gasoline”-”Love Story” mash-up. –I.K.

Long before Eras Tour began, fans were racking their Easter egg-ridden brains to figure out which of Swift’s first six albums would be the next re-record to drop. Rightfully, many had been going back-and-forth on Speak Now and 1989 , and those who guessed the former were proven correct early in the tour. But Swift seemed to be dropping a suspicious number of hints at the possibility of more music, including several studio sightings on her off days. Ending the first US leg of Eras on 8/9 in Los Angeles also felt a little too on the nose. Thankfully, this time, everyone had decoded correctly. Swift unveiled 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in the most Taylor way possible, wearing blue versions of each Eras costume, a nod to the adopted color for 1989 . She finally revealed the new cover and release date after singing fan-favorite bonus track “New Romantics” during the surprise-song set, a perfect end to the first leg of this lengthy, massive trek .–B.S.

Taylor Swift Pens Heartfelt Note to Portugal After 2 Sold-Out Eras Tour Shows in Lisbon: ‘Muito Obrigada‘

Taylor Swift is reflecting on her debut shows in Portugal!

The "Fortnight" singer, 34, posted a carousel of photo highlights from her two Eras Tour shows in the country to Instagram and X on Sunday, May 26, to express her gratitude toward her fans.

"It’s official, I left my 🤍 in Lisbon,” the 14-time Grammy winner wrote in the caption. “My first time in Portugal and you all made me feel like I was right at home. I’ll seriously never forget the way you treated us, the overwhelming love and passion and hands in the air and dancing and how you screamed every lyric!!"

"Muito obrigada 🇵🇹," Swift concluded, using a Portuguese phrase that translates to “thank you very much” in English.

The pop star's two-night Eras Tour tenure at Lisbon's Estádio da Luz venue on Friday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, was full of spectacular highs.

Swift performed the titular track from her latest album The Tortured Poets Department at the second show during the traditional surprise songs section of her set in an acoustic mashup with "Now That We Don’t Talk" from the  1989 (Taylor’s Version)  vault .

The "But Daddy I Love Him" singer also gave an emotional speech to the Portugal crowd on Saturday night.

"And during the course of those tours... we made so many fun memories, but the one thing that I wish I would have done differently is I wish I could have brought every one of those tours to come see you in Lisbon,” Swift said in a video posted on X .

“I have to say. I’ve just never seen a crowd like this in my life … There have been moments in this show already where I like, forget what I’m supposed to do next or what I’m supposed to say because I’m just so distracted by how much fun you’re having and how you’re performing in the audience. I love this," she added.

One Swiftie exclusively told PEOPLE about her experience getting engaged at the Friday night show, which the bride-to-be Beatriz Simões unexpectedly captured on video while Swift was performing "Love Story."

Swifties who met at the Eras Tour last year just got engaged. Their proposal involved a friendship bracelet.

For years, Taylor Swift was the invisible string tying Kayla McCarty and Kat Messinger to each other.

The two were at the same 2018 Reputation Tour show and had a mutual friend who wanted to introduce them, but the crowd was too chaotic to navigate. Then, they would've joined the same friend group and attended Lover Fest in 2020, if it hadn't been canceled due to COVID.

"Our mutual friends told us 'you guys would be perfect for each other,' and we just have never been able to connect," McCarty, 31, told Business Insider.

But on June 3, 2023, the two finally made it to the second night of Swift's Eras Tour in Chicago. McCarty came from California and Messinger from Iowa, sharing a suite with their friends.

"We definitely could have talked to anyone in the whole suite," McCarty said. "We were gravitating toward each other all night long."

Some people observing them already thought they were a couple, especially when McCarty gave Messinger a friendship bracelet when she saw her getting emotional during Swift's " Champagne Problems ."

"That was pretty much the moment that locked in this deep understanding of each other," McCarty said.

After almost a year of dating, including attending three more Eras Tour shows together, the two got engaged this past weekend.

"At an Eras Tour in SoFi, I gave her a friendship bracelet to ask her to be my girlfriend," McCarty said. "This weekend, she gave me a friendship bracelet and asked me to marry her, full circle."

They started dating weeks after they met

Days after they met, Messinger kept messaging the group chat originally used to coordinate meeting up for the concert, even though she rarely texts. A mutual friend, catching wind that Messinger just wanted to stay in touch with McCarty, encouraged her to reach out directly.

"She opened with 'Hi, it's me, I'm the problem, it's me,' and I immediately knew it was her," McCarty said. After that, they spoke nonstop. About a week later, Messinger asked what McCarty was doing in early July.

Messinger had finished her law clerkship in Iowa and was about to drive cross-country and relocate to Portland, Oregon. Only she kept driving to California to stay with McCarty and celebrate the release of "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)," spending the weekend together.

"It's always been a dream of mine to live in the woods, very 'Folklore' or 'Evermore,'" Messinger, 32, told BI. When she learned that McCarty lived near Yosemite National Park and also loved the outdoors, she saw "a dream girl, but also dream life."

" Electric Touch " became their song, because "it's about having this endless hope and it never working out, but that it could this time," McCarty said. One of the lyrics is "It's 8:05 and I see two headlights."

"I remember the exact moment I saw her car on my street and thinking 'This could be it,'" McCarty said.

Navigating a difficult time together

At first, Messinger moved to Portland as she planned, but the couple stayed very close.

"A lot of people are like, 'they're so fast, they're so lesbian, LOL,'" McCarty said of the pace of their relationship. "But we had this incredible summer of love where we went to a ton of the tours — and then things got real really fast."

McCarty's mother had a terminal illness. "I was starting to give up hope that she would be able to meet my person," McCarty said. "And it's like a family joke that my mom decided she was finally able to pass when she met Kat because she knew I'd be in good hands."

After that first meeting, Messinger supported McCarty, and was present when her mother died in November 2023. "She was the one who held me and kept me grounded to earth when it felt like everything was falling apart," McCarty said. Messinger began spending more time with McCarty in California, eventually treating it as more of a home base than her home in Portland.

When Messinger decided to propose, she got McCarty's mother's ring from her father. They went to the jeweler and incorporated the stones in both engagement rings.

"She and my mom had this very special relationship," McCarty said. "And so it was really important to me that she had a piece of my mom's ring."

Swift continues to be a part of their love story

Almost a year after they met, Messinger decided to propose when they were in Chicago, involving the original group that went to the concert with them.

"It was absolutely nerve-wracking," Messinger said. She made plans for the two to go out to dinner that Friday night, as a way to make sure they'd both be dressed up. As they got ready to leave, Messinger brought her over to the kitchen and started recounting their love story while one of their friends hid and took photos.

"I remember that one time you gave me a bracelet," Messinger said in her proposal. "I think it's only fitting that you get one."

The bracelet said "Marry Me" and included references to "Daylight," McCarty's favorite song. When she put it on, all of their friends popped out to embrace them.

"Taylor Swift was the reason why we met, but she literally has been in every step of this relationship," McCarty said.

In true Taylor Swift fashion, there are a lot of Easter eggs to be found: Their relationship followed a similar timeline to Swift's romance with Travis Kelce , with engagement rumors circling the same weekend Messinger proposed. Messinger also shares Taylor Swift's birthday, and both women are Sagittariuses, like Swift. They named their dog August after the song, and plan to attend the Eras Tour show in London this summer to celebrate their engagement.

"She's such a huge part of our life, and she has no idea, which is fine," McCarty said. As for their wedding? "She's always invited."

'Absolute chaos': Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in Lisbon delayed as fans waited to enter

LISBON — Chaos and madness. Two words that fans may fit into "Blank Space" lyrics were instead two words frantic Swifties used to describe Taylor Swift’s first-ever show in Portugal.

“I’m just sad,” says Noelle Vavuris who went to the Eras Tour in Santa Clara, California, and wanted to see the new “Tortured Poets Department” addition at the Estadio da Luz. “I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars to see Taylor. Please. I just want to be inside.”

Vavuris lives in Amsterdam and came to the concert with three of her best friends. 

“We’ve been waiting in line for an hour and a half and we just got all the way to the stadium and then got sent all the way outside,” she says, trying to find her correct gate after multiple attempts. “We’re herded cattle. There’s absolute chaos.”

Show opener Paramore went on after 7 p.m. The tickets said the show was supposed to begin at 6 p.m. You could hear Hayley Williams singing her last song “This is Why” booming from the open-roofed stadium as Vavuris made it past security.

“There was a massive bottleneck at the security checkpoint to get rid of water bottles,” says Malika Nunes, who lives in Lisbon and was in the same line as Vavuris. “And then people were jumping over the barricade, pulling them apart. We stood behind a post."

Security opened the gates to more areas and fans ran by the hundreds to the stadium doors.

"They finally got more police and more security people," Nunes says. "There's soccer games here weekly with as many people, and those are organized. This is chaos. I've never seen anything like this."

Temperatures hovered in the mid-70s. When Swift took the stage at 8 p.m., the temperature was 66 degrees. In a last-minute change by producer Last Tour, fans were allowed to bring a plastic water bottle into the open-roofed stadium up to 50 centiliters (about 16 ounces). No glass, hard plastic or metal containers were allowed inside according to an informational packet released .

When Swift came on stage, she didn't mention the delay or the wait. Her team didn't respond to an email asking about the late start.

"This is my first time getting to come to Portugal, and this is how you welcome us," she said, and the crowd went wild. "When I first walked out in the show and I looked out and saw the crowd, you took my breath away. My heart was beating so fast. You just made me feel so loved. Thank you so much."

Swift will play one more night in Lisbon before going to Madrid.
