Gorillaz

For a virtual band, the Gorillaz  have a lot of real-life material headed your way. The group led by Blur’s Damon Albarn confirmed on Wednesday (May 30) that the follow-up to last year’s Humanz , entitled The Now Now , is due out on June 29. One day later, they dropped the video for the song “Humility,” which takes lead singer 2-D on a rollerskating adventure on Venice Beach, where he runs into a guitar-strumming Jack Black and the usual assortment of colorful characters who hang around out in the legendarily chill California beach community.

The video for the jazz-pop single was directed by Albarn’s Gorillaz partner, artist Jamie Hewlett, and though it doesn’t feature the track’s special guest — 75 year-old jazz guitarist/singer George Benson — Black does his best to mime Benson’s strumming on one of “Breezin'” star’s signature Ibanez electric guitars.

June 29, 2018

At 50, Damon Albarn is still writing songs for the world’s most popular cartoon band because he believes in the romantic idea that an international charting group can change the world. Cartoons appeal to young people, which makes illustrator and co-founder Jamie Hewlett’s multicultural avatars—2-D, Russel, Noodle, the “imprisoned” Murdoc, and stand-in bassist Ace—a Trojan horse for the kind of politics that people prefer not to hear from millionaires. The records range from eco-centric protests to dystopian party playlists, all full of Albarn’s auteur charm and a faint scent of calculation, as if they’d been executive-produced by a bohemian pop-cultural think tank.

It’s hard to resent someone as melodically adept as Albarn, or so obviously in love with their work. On The Now Now — Gorillaz ’s second album in two years, and Albarn’s fourth in five—he writes simple, mostly upbeat songs with words of exhaustion. Adrift from the group’s grand concepts, this is their least ambitious and most plainly enjoyable music in years: written on tour, hashed out by Albarn and Hewlett at their studios, and recorded in the space of a month. It is, in the band’s telling, a solo album by Albarn’s character 2-D. It sounds, to the less imaginative, like an outlet for the daydream funk, playful psych-pop, and upscale disco that presumably soundtrack Albarn’s rare days off.

When Gorillaz records do grate, it’s usually thanks to a kind of sarcastic opulence, as if they’d been dictated by a man in a poolside recliner who won’t put down his iPad. Even when they’re on form, there’s something not quite right about their version of pop. The album opens with “ Humility ,” which sounds like an A.I.-generated summer bop: basslines bounce, synths rush, and George Benson riffs frolic like dragonflies. Everything is in its right place, yet the tune, as well as plenty here like it, conjures the ennui that descends when you finally arrive at the beach and wonder, Is this it ? It is. The Now Now is programmed fun, the affable kind that never threatens to whisk you away, but its wrongness is oddly compelling and part of Gorillaz’s world-building dexterity.

The Now Now succeeds partly because of its scarce guest list ( Snoop Dogg and Jamie Principle , on “Hollywood,” are the only vocal features), relative to last year’s overstuffed Humanz . The allure of isolation defines the record—Albarn wrote it in penthouse hotel rooms—and the motif fits his themes of modern politics and technology. “Calling the world from isolation,” the album begins, a mantra that shape-shifts to allude to Brexit, gun laws, and other political specters. It’s handy that these themes are, with Albarn’s light touch, mostly interchangeable, because they later become entangled with the subplot of a sabotaged relationship. “Baby I just survived, I got drunk, I’m sorry, am I losing you,” he groans on “Fire Flies,” a come-back plea that might as well be Britain sending a rueful late-night text to the EU. After endless observational laments, it’s a welcome personal flourish, albeit undermined by plodding space-funk that’s barely more convincing than its penitent narrator.

Given his penchant for the music of Mali and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it’s fascinating that Albarn remains such a sucker for generic pop-house and boom-bap beats. Gorillaz may be the only band in the world that could be improved by Diplo : Their rhythmic homogeneity—along with the space-station filters on Albarn’s already glum vocals—sometimes keeps these otherwise masterful pop confections grounded. Often the best songs are, accordingly, the folksiest, like “Souk Eye” and “One Percent,” fingerpicked acoustic numbers embellished by android whirrs and longing synths. They might have populated a follow-up to Everyday Robots , Albarn’s 2014 solo LP, were it not for their fairytale twinkle—the sense that everything is at once awful and full of magic, a quality that animates all of Gorillaz’s most apocalyptically pretty work.

Albarn had a shot at rehabilitating his languid balladry on Everyday Robots , his first latter-career album to let his melancholy just exist without ornamentation. The cartoon band can catch you off guard like that, in a summer pop playlist or a branch of Urban Outfitters, which makes the project, in a strange way, a more suitable solo concern than Albarn’s proper solo work. He’s his own institution now, neither a dilettante nor a polymath, comparable to none, still with a schoolboy eye for the absurd and an interest in almost everything. It might be too humble for its own good, but The Now Now is the rare commercial sojourn that feels like a product of real fascination.

North America

Fall 2022

Tickets On Sale Friday, May 20th at 10am Local Time

Gorillaz has confirmed an historic, rare, and not to be missed North American tour. The tour, produced by Live Nation, is Gorillaz’ first Stateside trip since the 2018 trek that concluded with the inaugural Demon Dayz Festival L.A., described by UPROXX as  “truly something special to see,”  and is the bands only planned North American outing on the horizon. The world’s most successful virtual act will once again be brought to life by Damon Albarn and the 14-piece Gorillaz live band — aided and abetted by a varying cast of guest performers — for a series of 21 unique and unforgettable arena dates across the U.S. and Canada (plus a previously announced headline appearance at the Life Is Beautiful festival) beginning September 11 in Vancouver, BC and wrapping up on October 23 in Miami, FL.

The Gorillaz live experience hailed by ROLLING STONE as  “an overwhelming pop spectacle, with Damon Albarn’s steady presence to keep the audience focused”  draws on 20+ years of genre-bending, paradigm-shifting, consistently innovative musical brilliance. Since their creation at the hands of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, singer 2D, bassist Murdoc Niccals, guitarist Noodle and drummer Russel Hobbs have amassed an unparalleled arsenal of classic tunes including “Clint Eastwood,” “Tomorrow Comes Today,” “19-2000,” “Feel Good Inc.,” “DARE,” “Dirty Harry,” “Kids With Guns,” “El Mañana,” “Stylo,” “Superfast Jellyfish,” “On Melancholy Hill,” “Saturnz Barz,” “Andromeda,” “Strobelite,” “Humility,” “Hollywood,” “Tranz,” “Momentary Bliss,” “Désolé,” “Aries,” “Strange Timez,” “The Pink Phantom,” and literally dozens more. The BRIT and GRAMMY Award winning band’s albums include  Gorillaz  (2001),  Demon Days  (2005),  Plastic Beach  (2010), The Fall  (2011),  Humanz  (2017),  The Now Now  (2018) and  Song Machine – Season One: Strange Timez (2020). A truly global phenomenon, Gorillaz have achieved success in entirely ground-breaking and unique ways, touring the world from San Diego to Syria, Montevideo to Manchester and winning numerous awards including the coveted Jim Henson Creativity Honor. The band is recognized by The Guinness Book Of World Records as the planet’s Most Successful Virtual Act.

Gorillaz is currently bringing its spontaneous globe-trekking carnival to stages from South America to Europe, on its current 2022 World Tour. The Fall 2022 dates comprise its only currently planned visit to North America. Support from Vancouver through Atlanta will come from EARTHGANG, while Jungle will support in Orlando and Miami.

Background [ ]

Recording began with fewer collaborators than usual, due to criticism over the band's previous album Humanz (2017) having too many, during the North American leg of the Humanz Tour in late 2017. According to Gorillaz co-creator Damon Albarn , The Now Now was recorded quickly so that the band would have more material for future live sets. Albarn has described the album as "pretty much just [him] singing" and "in the world of 2-D ".

Recording [ ]

The Now Now was demoed during the 2017 Humanz tour , mostly in America. In the CD booklet for the album, the tracks which were demoed in the US are noted as such:

  • Hollywood - Demo recorded at Mondrian Hotel, West Hollywood, California.
  • Kansas - Demo recorded at The Raphael Hotel, Kansas City, Missouri.
  • Idaho - Demo recorded at Knob Hill Inn, Ketchum, Idaho.
  • Lake Zurich - Demo recorded at Marriott Hotel, Zurich.
  • Magic City - Demo recorded at Delano South Beach, Miami, Florida.
  • One Percent - Demo recorded at Marriott Hotel, Zurich.
  • Souk Eye - Demo recorded at Mondrian Hotel, West Hollywood, California.

From there, the majority of the album was recorded at Studio 13 in February 2018 - footage of which can be seen in the Reject False Icons documentary. The album was recorded very quickly, because the live band wanted new material they could play at festivals.

Among the virtual band, the album's bass duties were handled by Ace , a character originally from The Powerpuff Girls W . Murdoc was unable to join the recording sessions because he had been locked in jail for accumulated parking fines.

Title Meaning [ ]

In an interview with NME, 2-D stated that the album was called 'The Now Now' because it reflected how people need to live in 'the now' as it happens 'now' rather than dwelling on the future or the past because the present (the now) can become the past (then) in the blink of an eye; joking that it was for this reason that the album was named 'The Now Now' and not 'The Now Then'. [1]

2-D's outlook on living 'in the now' (or 'in the present') is a loose reference to the Transcendentalist W philosophy of living in the moment and self-reliance.

Release [ ]

Two new songs from the album were performed during the Humanz Tour : Idaho (at a September 2017 concert in Seattle), and Hollywood (at a March 2018 concert in Santiago). The latter performance would also mark Damon announcing the album's imminent release.

At All Points East W 2018, a series of posters with ominous phrases (G Is the Magic Number, Save Us From Him, etc.) would be found, alongside a link that pointed to a teased release date of this new album.

Lead single Humility would release on the 31st of May, along with a teaser trailer for the album with Lake Zurich , followed by a series of single releases. Following the album announcement day, a North American seven-date tour to promote the album beginning in October, as part of The Now Now Tour , was announced. [2] On 24 June, Gorillaz performed The Now Now live at the Boiler Room W in Tokyo, Japan, streaming it live on YouTube W . [3]

The Now Now would release on the 29th of June of the same year. Along with the standard album, a deluxe edition 12” x 12” rigid board box set was also released, containing:

  • Exclusive heavyweight blue vinyl 12” LP housed in spined cover with printed inner sleeve;
  • 2D's Private Journal , a 52-page booklet, a studio notebook including album lyrics;
  • 4 art prints size 12” x 12”;
  • 6 pin badges size 1” mounted on card;
  • A download card for the digital album;
  • Opaque Round Hype Sticker on Shrink Wrap.

This version was also sold as a bundle together with a Gorillaz slip mat, Gorillaz themed playing cards or several T-Shirts. As for the CD formats, certain editions came bundles with 5 exclusive cardboard postcards including the slogans from the album and band artwork. Interestingly, the Mexican release is the only one to include a 'clean' version of the fifth postcard (with a black-and-white illustration of the band members), without the track listing and barcode. • The logo for the album uses the font 'Avalon Bold', which can be seen here .
  • Both are the only albums by Gorillaz to not feature any bonus tracks on any edition;
  • Both feature 2-D by himself on the cover art;
  • Both feature the least ammount of collaborators among all of the band's albums;
  • Recording of both albums started during the North American tour of a different studio album ( Humanz and Plastic Beach , respectively);
  • Both were released only shortly after the previous studio album and are of shorter length compared to them;
  • Murdoc is entirely absent on both albums.
  • On the 22nd June, a week prior to its intended release, the entire album was accidentally released for Amazon customers who had pre-ordered it as MP3.
  • 'Save Us From Him', on the other hand, likely references the character HIM , who is also from the Powerpuff Girls series, like Ace .
  • The animated version of the cover art was produced by director and animator Jac Clinch , who also worked on various other Gorillaz projects, such as the Hollywood visualiser . [4]

Josh Hull ruled out of the upcoming England men's Test tour of Pakistan due to quad injury

Josh Hull will miss England's Test tour of Pakistan because of a quad injury; the three-match Test series gets under way in Multan on October 7

Thursday 26 September 2024 19:48, UK

Josh Hull was called into the squad ahead of England's second Test against Sri Lanka

Leicestershire left-armer Josh Hull has been ruled out of the upcoming England men's Test tour of Pakistan due to a quad injury.

Hull is absent from the current white-ball series against Australia due to the injury, which he suffered during his Test debut against Sri Lanka at the Kia Oval, and will continue his recovery instead of travelling with the squad for next month's three-Test series.

The 6ft 7in left-arm seamer was catapulted into the Test team for their final assignment of the summer against Sri Lanka earlier this month despite a thin first-class record of 16 wickets in 10 matches.

He finished with creditable match figures of three for 91 runs but his Test debut had an unpleasant ending as a thigh complaint meant he was unable to feature in the T20 and ODI series against Australia.

It was initially thought the problem would not be serious enough to rule the 20-year-old rookie out of the three-match Test series against Pakistan, which gets under way in Multan on October 7.

Speaking to The Cricketer about the last few weeks with England, he said: "It hasn't quite sunk in yet. It's been a crazy experience but I've got a little niggle at the minute.

"I think I'm off Pakistan. They fly on October 1 so it was a bit of a push but there are a few opportunities for the winter now and we'll see what happens.

"It's come at an annoying time because we had the white-ball stuff. When you get an opportunity like that to get in the mix, you want to keep on going.

"It's given me a lot to think about in terms of where I want to improve to get to play at that level. It was hopefully the start of a journey."

Josh Hull - Leicestershire

Hull's absence leaves Chris Woakes, Matthew Potts, Olly Stone, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse as the frontline fast bowling options in a 16-strong squad for Pakistan.

Ben Stokes is unlikely to bowl at the start of the series but an ECB statement on Wednesday said he "remains on track" to captain the side after tearing his hamstring in The Hundred last month.

Kristen Bell is spending this week bouncing around Manhattan and Los Angeles at a fast clip. The actress is promoting her new Netflix series, Nobody Wants This —a rom-com she stars in alongside Adam Brody. Bell is hitting all the usual press stops— Late Night, Kelly Clarkson, Jimmy Kimmel —and wearing a whiplash-inducing number of outfits. She’s weighing both high and low, styling both jeans and dressier matching sets.

On the casual end, Bell headed to Jimmy Kimmel Live! in Los Angeles wearing light wash jeans and a brown, tight tank. She dressed up the outfit a little bit with black pointed toe slingback heels and a Suede & Leather L Tote in the shade Wood Multi from Lafayette 148.

Heading to New York, Bell continued in a fairly relaxed look with a black and white striped sweater dress from Posse. The brand’s Theo Off-The-Shoulder Dress is similar to their strapless version, which Megan Markle and Katie Holmes have both worn . However, the off-the-shoulder, long sleeve cut makes it a bit more seasonally appropriate. She wore the dress with black pointed toe heels, sunglasses, and a small black leather purse.

However, Bell’s press tour also included a few dressier outfits, many of which played into Spring 2025’s sheer trend. Bell’s stylist Nicole Chavez did indeed call this stretch of outfits Bell’s “naked tour” on Instagram . For her appearance on Good Morning America , Bell wore a white, see-through, oversized button down and matching midi skirt from The Frankie Shop. For contrast, she carried a black Anine Bing mini Luna leather bag.

Still at GMA , Bell continued the sheer theme in a matching blue skirt set from Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini. The turtleneck top was see-through so she added a Norma Kamali bralette in a similar denim-colored hue underneath. Bell kept her same shoes and handbag from her earlier outfit.

Also in New York, Bell and Brody attended a fan screening of the series at the Paris Theater, now owned by Netflix. She continued her monochromatic outfit run in a full burgundy look—from the shirtdress to the matching suede boots and Kate Spade bag .

It does seem like Bell’s press tour is now coming to a close— Nobody Wants This premieres on Netflix today. The series is a romantic comedy will-they-won’t-they following an oversharing, non-Jewish, sex podcaster (Bell) who meets a sensitive, unconventional rabbi (Brody). Yes, the “a rabbi and a podcaster walk into bar” joke writes itself.

A fun show with great energy. It was adorable when Cacie choked up near the end thanking everyone who supports the band (their last night of the tour), and had a tender group hug with her bandmates.

All of lady gaga’s wildly theatrical ‘joker: folie à deux’ press tour outfits.

Lady Gaga

Harley Quinn is in the building.

Lady Gaga is once again in the spotlight for her acting chops, with “Joker: Folie à Deux” set to hit theaters on October 4.

The movie — which stars Gaga as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, love interest to Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck (the Joker) — has inspired the “Chromatica” singer to fully embrace method dressing, much like fellow actors Margot Robbie, Blake Lively and Zendaya did for “Barbie,” “It Ends With Us” and “Challengers,” respectively.

And the pop icon’s switched up her look entirely for this new era, trying on a flame-colored bob, clown-like makeup and (of course) harlequin patterns aplenty while promoting the project.

Below, see all the outfits Gaga’s worn during her press tour, both on and off the red carpet.

Lady gaga in a black ballgown

She kicked off the tour with a bang at the film’s Venice Film Festival premiere, hitting the red carpet in dramatic Dior Haute Couture .

The elegant look featured a black velvet bustier and a sweeping pick-up skirt. Tiffany & Co. jewels and a show-stopping Philip Treacy headpiece completed the look.

As for her makeup, Gaga went for a deep and bold red lipstick and a smoky eye.

Lady gaga red gown at the london premiere

One day after announcing her “Harlequin” concept album, Gaga kicked things into high gear at the movie’s London premiere, stepping out in a scarlet Celine gown with a matching puff-sleeved bolero jacket.

Along with trading her signature platinum locks for a choppy red bob, the superstar amped up her makeup with blue eyeshadow, winged liner and even a sparkling tear.

Among her Tiffany & Co. jewels? A Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany “Bird on a Rock” brooch set with a spessartine of over 20 carats.

Later that same day, Gaga was spotted arriving at a “Harlequin” listening party in a vintage striped babydoll dress from Act I, along with harlequin-patterned Emilio Cavallini tights and towering Marc Jacobs platforms.

She later changed into a wild quilted Ida Immendorff bodysuit, ripped stockings and a sparkling silver version of the sky-high shoes.

Lady gaga London photocall Sept 26

She kept the same vibe going at a photocall in London the next day, sporting an outfit that could have been plucked straight from the movie’s costume department.

Along with her beloved 8-inch Marc Jacobs heels, Gaga wore a lace-collared floral dress from costume house Muto-Little and classic Celine sunglasses.

It also appears that the red hair is here to stay — at least until Gaga’s next era.

Presidents Cup 2024: Keegan Bradley's moment was worth the 10-year wait

2174723749

Minas Panagiotakis

MONTREAL— Keegan Bradley waited for this moment. Ten years this week, to be exact. He was never shy about his love for team events, saying they were always on his mind and going so far to say they defined him. It broke him to his core when he was left off last year’s Ryder Cup, because it underlined that the hardest part of the wait was understanding it may never come.

But Bradley got it, Thursday evening in Montreal, his 10-footer for a win still feet from the cup as he raised his hands in celebration, and when that 10-footer disappeared Bradley unleashed 10 years’ worth of passion that could no longer be contained.

“It was 10 years of pent up energy, it looks like, of not playing these,” Bradley said. “I just had such a blast out there today. It's really fun for me to be out here with these guys. I told Wyndham on 17 or 18 just how much I missed being out here and doing this.”

Scottie Scheffler is trying to put an exclamation mark on one of the best seasons in recent golf memory. Xander Schauffele, who six months ago faced questions about his finishing ability, is turning into a stone-cold closer. Tom Kim is becoming (for better and worse) the face of the International team. There’s the uncomfortable question facing this event, that its current format is in desperate need of overhaul, a notion that will only grow louder following Thursday’s 5-0 American sweep. But perhaps the most poignant of storylines from Day 1 at Royal Montreal was Bradley’s return to the red, white and blue.

It has nothing to necessarily do with who Bradley is, and was, as a player, although it is worth remembering why he was once a staple of American clubs in his late 20s. The 2011 PGA champion was one of the game’s best ball-strikers and someone who formed a formidable and animated pair with Phil Mickelson. Despite how lean those American rosters were, Bradley seemed like a surefire bet to be a part of its nucleus, only to watch his game go sideways following the game’s ban on anchor putters. By the time Bradley righted the ship another generation had moved in, one that didn’t necessarily go out of its way to bring Bradley back into the fold. But the real reason his return resonated is because Bradley cared in a time when Americans were accused of not caring at all. He has often told the story of his unopened luggage from the 2012 Ryder Cup, promising only to do so when he was a part of a winning American Ryder Cup team again, and when he had a career revival in 2023 Bradley let it be known how badly he wanted to be a part of the American effort in Rome. It’s why his exclusion last fall got the attention it did, and frankly why he was named captain for the 2025 event; if the Europeans’ success is correlated to their love of the event, Bradley was the closest thing to an American avatar. “This morning when I heard the National Anthem and I was seeing the boys getting ready, I was really emotional,” Bradley said. “It really took me by surprise. There's been a few times this week where I've been emotional about this week. I've said I didn't—there was a point in my life I never thought I'd get to do this again.”

In a sense the Bradley comeback has already happened with that surprising Ryder Cup appointment, where you better believe Bradley will bring that suitcase to Bethpage to unpack his team and country to see. But that was an honor given while his selection on this Presidents Cup was earned by a win in the FedEx Cup playoffs, allowing Bradley at least one more chance to be the guy he once was.

It is different. He is no longer a fledgling talent but the team’s oldest player at 38. The clubhouse vibe is unrecognizable, something for the better but also one that lends itself to remorse.

“What I've learned is how much they care for each other. I was of an era, I guess, where I felt like everyone I was playing against was my enemy, and I really regret that,” Bradley said. “These guys care about each other. They want to beat them inside the ropes bad, but when they get outside the ropes, they're friends, the wives are friends. It's a much happier way to go about this life.” The one constant was the chance to prove himself to his team, to himself, inside the ropes. His teammate Wyndham Clark carried most of the load (over 3.4 strokes gained for the 2023 U.S. Open champ), although Bradley dropped six putts over 10 feet, many of them spurring Bradley to chase after the putt with a fist pump, including the birdie at 18 that gave the pair a win and their team a sweep. Clark embraced him, followed soon by his wife and the rest of the American team, all knowing what that moment meant to Bradley. “This was special, man,” Bradley said moments after his final putt dropped. “I don't take these weeks for granted anymore. I'm kind of speechless. It was just amazing.” There’s still three days left at this Presidents Cup, and at least for tomorrow, Bradley will be watching from the sidelines. Perhaps the Internationals make a comeback. It could also turn into a snoozer. No matter. Keegan Bradley got his moment. One that was worth the wait.

Jennifer Lopez  is taking her  new album,  This Is Me... Now,  on the road! On Thursday, the singer announced her return to the touring stage with This Is Me...Now The Tour. It's the first time in five years that the singer is taking to the road in support of her album. The last time fans got the JLo touring experience was with her 2019 tour that grossed over $50 million and sold out venues across the country.

Produced by Live Nation, the 30+ city tour kicks off on June 26 in Orlando, FL, at Kia Center, making stops across North America in Miami, Los Angeles, Toronto, her hometown of New York City, and more before wrapping up in Houston, Texas on August 31 at Toyota Center.

Fans can look forward to Lopez performing her catalog of hits across her discography as well as new songs from her album.

Tickets for the upcoming tour will be available beginning with a JLo Fan Club presale on Feb. 20, with additional presales running throughout the week ahead of the general sale starting Feb. 23 at LiveNation.com.

The news of the tour comes days after Lopez walked the red carpet at the premiere of  This Is Me... Now: A Love Story  at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Tuesday, where she spoke with ET about the emotional story that unfolds in  the unique cinematic project.

"The album that I made was very honest, about kind of wanting to capture this moment in time of reconnecting with a love," said Lopez. "It seems like a fairytale, but it really wasn't. And so I really wanted to tell that part of the story -- the real story, in a way, but not my autobiographical story."

According to Lopez, she and director/co-writer Dave Meyers "come up with the idea of telling the story of a hopeless romantic who kind of is going through her life's journey in her search for love, and what it means and what it's about."

Lopez shared that she showed  This Is Me... Now: A Love Story  to her 15-year-old twins -- daughter Emme and son Max, who she shares with ex-husband Marc Anthony -- and explained to them how the project explores a version of real events that blend truth and fictional narrative.

"I was talking to my kids about this, and then they're like, 'Which parts are real and which parts are not?' And I said, 'You will think some parts are real, that are not. And then some parts you don't think are real,  are  real,'" Lopez recalled. "But it is inspired by a lot of the things I went through and it's really about what it has been for me to be a hopeless romantic my whole life, and some of the pitfalls of that."

For Lopez, it was "kind of exciting and terrifying to explore all of it" in such a public and open space. "But for the first time, I felt really compelled to do something that wasn't about anything except wanting to do something, like art for art's sake, and that's why I did it myself," she added.

Griffin Colapinto Talks WSL Finals Heartbreak, Lexus, and the Fire to Win a World Title

The Inertia

There is a world title in Griffin Colapinto’s future. I firmly believe that. Coming off back-to-back third-place finishes on the Championship Tour, he’s primed to make a breakthrough. Few surfers on tour are as well-rounded and exciting to watch.

But failing to win a heat on his Lower Trestles home turf in both of his WSL Finals appearances can take a mental toll. Griffin admits that the attention and pressure got to him and might have negatively impacted his performance. However, after talking with Griffin, I can tell the 26-year-old Gen Z talent has a good head on his shoulders. Beyond the hardcore surfer accent and goofball personality, Griffin is a smart kid with a healthy perspective on life. He opts to cherish what he has instead of stressing over what he doesn’t. It’s an outlook that, when paired with his raw talent, is a good combination to earn a world title.

While Griffin was hanging out in the green room ahead of his Trilogy: New Wave film premiere in Beverly Hills, I had a chat with him to discuss his headspace after that tough loss at Trestles, his offseason routine, and the fat checks from Lexus.

Where’s your head at, post-WSL Finals?

So far, the off-season has just been full relax mode. I’ve been letting go of the waking up and training, all the routines I do every day. I sleep in and wake up like, “What am I going to do today?” instead of having things planned out in advance. It feels really good. I also realize how much I love being in a routine, too. It makes me excited to get back to that. But I think I need a little break to remember how good that feels and build up that excitement. I’m having fun right now. We got the ( Trilogy: New Wave ) premiere tonight and we’re going out after, enjoying life.

Griffin Colapinto Talks WSL Finals Heartbreak, Lexus, and the Fire to Win a World Title

Not a fun moment for Mr. Colapinto. Photo: Thiago Diz//World Surf League

Your loss in the WSL Finals was a bit of a heartbreaker. Were there any valuable lessons learned from that experience?

Once I got in the water, I was actually pretty nervous. Usually I feel more nervous before (the heat) and then once I get in the water it goes away. But I had a bit of nerves out there. There were so many people there, so many eyes watching. I think I was scared to lose not being able to show my surfing. That transpired into me making some bad wave decisions, instead of being more patient and observing what waves I’m taking off on. I still got two really good opportunities and it just didn’t go my way. I think going through that heartbreak is a good thing in the long run because it’s going to leave me with motivation and fire for next season. Through my training, I’ll have that in me every day I wake up. I think it’ll push me even further, so once I break through I can run with it for a long time.

Do you think being the local and having all the hometown support added to those nerves you mentioned? If so, how will that change next year when the WSL Finals are in Fiji?

It was crazy. I would take off on a wave and I could hear everyone on the beach screaming as I was (surfing) the wave. Normally we’re on a wave and it’s silent. You can’t hear anything. So that was different from what I’m used to. In Fiji, obviously, it’s super out there, away from people, so it’s different. I think when there’s no sound from the beach, it can be easier to lock into your flow state. But that day it was super high tide too, so the crowd was really close to the surfers, and it’s just so different from what we’re used to.

After two third-place finishes in a row in the WSL Finals, what do you think needs to change to break through to a world title?

I think it’s just experience, putting yourself in that position as much as possible. Then, over time, you eventually break through. I’ve experienced that at every other level that I’ve gone through, from amateur to making the Final 5. I always make it there and it takes me a couple of years to break through. I feel like that’s what I’m going through with the world title. Now it’s just stepping back, looking at the big picture, and being like, wow, I’ve come from that to this. Now I’m fighting for a world title and have a super good shot at it. It’s a cool feeling. Also (it’s important to) look at what I have and not what I don’t have. I think with a healthy mindset and attitude, the sky’s the limit.

Lexus just announced you’re going to be its first surf ambassador. How did that partnership come to be?

WSL and Lexus, obviously, are partners now. I think Lexus reached out to the WSL and were asking them if they had any surfers they thought would be good for them in North America. They recommended me.

Getting a non-endemic sponsor like that must be a pretty good chunk of change added to your income.

Yeah, it’s pretty good. Probably one of my top four (sponsors).

What is the rest of your off-season going to look like as we near the 2025 season?

I’ll do this premiere tonight, have fun, and then start looking at going on surf trips, trying to score good waves, film, and travel with my brother and friends – just do that for a bit. I’ll start training again, surfing a bunch, and get fired up. I think the schedule next year is looking like possibly one of the best yet, so it’s exciting.

There’s been a trend in surfing these last few years of surfers at the top of their game losing the fire to chase world titles and stepping away from the tour (like Carissa, Filipe, and Steph). Is your fire to win a world title still as strong as ever? Or do you feel that burnout as well?

Well, those are people who have already won world titles. For me, it’s f*#king strong as ever.

Fair enough. What are you looking forward to most next year?

Creating more memories with my crew. We have an amazing support crew and every time we go somewhere, we have the best trip of our lives.

Only the best. We promise.

Heart’s Ann Wilson Announces She’s Completed Chemo, Will Return to the Road Next Year

Heart Ann Wilson Announces Cancer Diagnosis

UPDATE: 9/25/24 4:43 p.m. ET

Heart’s Ann Wilson shared a positive update about her health after revealing a cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

“I’m doing absolutely fine now but it’s been, to put it mildly, a lot. Chemo is no joke,” Wilson said in an audio message posted via her social media accounts on Wednesday, September 25. “It takes a lot out of a person. And then there’s that two weeks of waiting around for test results, a form of mental torture. For anyone who’s been through that, I empathize big time.”

Wilson continued, “Luckily, for me, when the results finally came, they were the good kind!”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said she is “finished with chemo” and looks forward to getting back on the road with Heart in 2025.

Original story below:

Heart singer Ann Wilson revealed she recently underwent surgery for cancer and will be taking time away from the road, postponing the Royal Flush Tour with Cheap Trick.

The rock legend, 74, made the announcement via Instagram on Tuesday, July 2.

“Dear friends, I recently underwent surgery to remove something that, as it turns out, was cancerous,” she wrote. “The operation was successful & and I’m feeling great but my doctors are now advising me to undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy & I’ve decided to do it.”

Wilson continued, “And so my doctors are instructing me to take the rest of the year away from the stage in order to fully recover.”

Heart was scheduled to return to the Royal Flush Tour alongside Cheap Trick on July 30, with dates scheduled throughout North America through the end of the year.

The “Barracuda” singer did not specify what type of cancer she is battling.

In May, the band canceled the remainder of their European tour citing Wilson’s health and a “time-sensitive but routine medical procedure for which the minimum recovery time is six weeks.”

After announcing her cancer diagnosis, Wilson boasted it’s her “absolute plan” to return to touring in 2025. “My team is getting those details sorted & we’ll let you know the plan as soon as we can,” she said.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer thanked the band’s legions of fans and closed the message with a hopeful send-off.

“This is merely a pause,” Wilson wrote. “I’ve much more to sing.”

Wilson noted her post will be her “last public statement” on the matter.

After the announcement, well wishes began rolling in for the venerable vocalist from many of her famous fans and friends.

“ You got this Ann!” comedian Loni Love commented via Instagram. “Get well soon and know that I am praying for your healing.”

Her bandmate and younger sister Nancy Wilson also posted about the diagnosis.

“HELLO beloved Heartmongers and noble Heart fans!” Nancy wrote via Instagram on Tuesday. “Happy to let you all know that the HEART tour is still coming your way, but we need to take a temporary pause and postpone the remaining HEART tour dates for now. Rescheduled dates are on the way so stay tuned.”

Nancy concluded, “From the end of the world to your town! See you guys soon. Can’t wait. Love rules.”
