Watch: ‘America’s Got Talent’ Winner Richard Goodall’s “Pinch Me” Moment Performing “Don’t Stop Believin’” With Journey

Tina Benitez-Eves

Updated:

As the finale of America’s Got Talent season 19 came to a close, the top 10 finalists dwindled with the elimination of Zimbabwean stand-up comedian Learnmore Jonasi, Tanzanian acrobats Hakuna Matata Acrobats, costume change illusionist Solange Kardinaly, Japanese dance group AIRFOOTWORKS, and more until one man was standing. Richard Goodall , the singing middle school janitor from Indiana, who first earned a Golden Buzzer during his May 2024 audition with a performance of the 1981  Journey  classic “ Don’t Stop Believin ‘,” was crowned the season 19 AGT winner during the finale on Tuesday, September 24. Throughout the competition, Goodall won Americans’ votes with performances of Michael Bolton ‘s “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” and another Journey hit, “ Faithfully .” Before his big win—beating out runner-up, the human and dog dancing duo Roni Sagi and Rhythm—the 55-year-old janitor from Terre Haute, Indiana shared one last AGT performance, joined by guitarist Neal Schon and members of Journey as his backing band.

“We’ve been on tour the last six months, and I’ve been watching this phenomenon,” said Schon of Goodall following their performance. “He’s an amazing singer, an amazing man, and I’m proud to be here today for him.” When AGT host Terry Crews asked Goodall how it felt to perform with his musical heroes, he responded, “Someone just pinch me. Just pinch me.” Along with Goodall’s Journey surprise, the finale was a star-studded evening of performances, including Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles showing off some of her gymnastics and new The Voice coach Michael Bublé and his rendition of Nat King Cole ‘s “L-O-V-E,” along with Steve Aoki joining AIRFOOTWORKS, and a performance by Andra Day and her introduction of S19 finalist DeeDee Simon with the Detroit Youth Choir. Following Goodall’s S19 finale performance on September 17, he and his fiancée, Angie Vanowen were married in Malibu, California. “As of 3 pm Pacific Standard Time, Angie and I are now Richard and Angela VanGoodall,” shared the AGT champ in a Facebook post , along with a picture of the couple’s wedding bands. “An amazing night, day, and night last night,” Goodall later added. “Married to my love with my ‘AGT’ family attending and we got the pleasure of eating in Malibu on the beach at Moonshadows. So blessed and eternally grateful.”

Richard Goodall Sang Journey Again for the Final and It Almost Topped His Audition

The 55-year-old janitor sang Journey's "Faithfully" for the  AGT Finals.

Season 19 of America’s Got Talent has come to a close and the competition during the Live Final was fiercer than ever. This season’s Acts pushed the boundaries of belief, and sometimes, the boundaries of physics to deliver some truly astonishing entertainment.

How to Watch

Watch America’s Got Talent Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock .

The top 10 Acts took to the stage one last time on September 17, 2024 to campaign for votes and their shot at the $1 million prize. The lineup was diverse, including death-defying acrobats, quick-change magic , stand-up comedy , a dancing dog , and an aerial drone show . On paper, an unassuming 55-year-old elementary school janitor might seem like odd company, but Richard Goodall has a hidden talent which carried him all the way to the finish line and earned him the season's win.

Goodall keeps things sparkling at an elementary school in Terre Haute, Indiana, where he sings in the halls while cleaning up. Students told him he was talented often enough that he eventually started to believe them, and he hopped a plane headed for AGT . Ever since then, he's been a rocket headed straight to the top. Goodall closed out the first set of Auditions with an incredible rendition of “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. When he was finished, Simon Cowell said, “I think America is going to love you,” and he was right.

After earning a Golden Buzzer, Goodall returned with performances of Michael Bolton’s “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” and Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” each song moving him one step closer to the Final.

Before his Finals performance, Goodall received video messages from well-wishers.

“I’m hoping I’m not looking for a new janitor, but Richard, if I am, it means you won it all,” said the school principal. Similar messages from students and family members accompanied a school marquee reading “Good luck ‘sweeping’ the competition.” Goodall also heard from Journey guitarist Neal Schon, who had an exciting announcement.

“Richard, it's Neal from Journey. I loved your audition, man, and I have a surprise for you. I'm coming to perform with you on the finale. I will see you really soon,” Schon said.

Appropriately, Goodall delivered his second Journey song of the season, belting out a heart-rending performance of “Faithfully.” The combined power of Goodall’s voice and the accompanying backing band had the entire crowd on its feet, flashlights and smartphones lighting up the room. Even after the final notes rang out, the cheering crowd was so loud that the Judges could hardly be heard.

"T hankfully it's a song that I had been singing to Ang for a very, very long time," Goodall told  NBC Insider . "I started with Journey, I wanted to end the competition with Journey. And then little did I know I was going to be a big footnote at the end of the book... Phenomenal."

What did the Judges say about Richard Goodall's Finals Act?

“Richard, I can feel the energy behind me. Honestly, from the minute you came on this show, you’ve never crumbled. You haven’t, you’ve risen. We all need a hero right now, and you are our hero,” Cowell said, reiterating his earlier feelings.

Howie Mandel went even further, saying, “I will make a prediction right now. I think you just sang yourself one million dollars.”

Did Richard Goodall's 'America's Got Talent' journey end with a $1 million prize?

Portrait of Holly V. Hays

From the moment he first appeared on television screens, Terre Haute janitor Richard Goodall was a fan favorite to win Season 19 of " America's Got Talent ."

The Vigo County native has stolen hearts after a run of impressive performances from 1980s hitmakers including Journey, Michael Bolton and Survivor. He left it all on the stage last week with a heartwarming performance of Journey's "Faithfully," which was dedicated to his then-fiancée ( now wife! ), Angie.

Fans waited anxiously for a week to learn whether Goodall would take home the $1 million prize and have the chance to headline a show in Las Vegas.

Here's what you need to know about the Season 19 results.

During the Sept. 24 finale, Goodall had a "pinch me" moment, reprising his audition song alongside original Journey guitarist Neal Schon and members of Journey.

After getting a pre-taped shout-out from Journey lead guitarist Neal Schon himself, Goodall performed Journey's 1983 hit "Faithfully" during the Sept. 17 finals round.

What did AGT judges say about Richard Goodall's finals performance?

In the Sept. 17 show, Judge Heidi Klum, who has supported Goodall since his audition, said the humble, kind janitor may have a quiet presence, but he becomes a “big rock star” when he steps behind the mic.

"Richard, I have been faithfully your biggest fan since the very, very first day we met, all the way through this competition,” she said. “I want you to win this so bad, Richard!”

Howie Mandel made a bold prediction: “I think you just sang yourself $1 million.”

Who were the Top 5 finalists in Season 19 of AGT?

  • Sky Elements  (aerial drones)
  • Learnmore Jonasi  (stand-up comedian)
  • Richard Goodall  (singer)
  • Solange Kardinaly  (quick-change magician)
  • Roni Sagi & Rhythm  (dancer and dancing dog)

How does the AGT $1 million prize work?

Winners don't actually take home a $1 million check. Multiple sources have pointed to an NBC disclaimer that notes: "The prize, which totals $1,000,000, is payable in a financial annuity over forty years, or the contestant may choose to receive the present cash value of such annuity."

In 2016, Forbes reported that that disclaimer allows AGT to pay only $25,000 a year for 40 years, and that that amount represents a pre-tax payment. Forbes also reported that the second part of the disclaimer actually allows them to pay even less, should the winner choose that option. A smaller lump sum of money — "the present cash value of such annuity" — would amount to a few hundred thousand dollars, not a full $1 million. If Goodall, who turns 55 next month, chooses the annuity plan, he will be nearly 95 when payments are complete.

Who is Richard Goodall? 7 facts about the 'America's Got Talent' season 19 winner

"America's Got Talent" crowned  Richard Goodall , a self-proclaimed "singing janitor" from Indiana, as its newest winner.

During the Tuesday night finale, Goodall, who won Heidi Klum's Golden Buzzer, beat out nine other finalists, including Tanzanian acrobats  Hakuna Matata Acrobats , Zimbabwean stand-up comedian  Learnmore Jonasi  and Japanese dance group  Air Foot Works .

The competition then narrowed down to just Goodall and a dog-performing duo from Israel,  Roni Sagi and Rhythm . However, the Hoosier ultimately won the $1 million prize .

Goodall ended the night by taking the stage with the band Journey and its co-founder/lead guitarist Neal Schon for a rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'," which is the song he performed during his first audition.

Here are seven facts about the 2024 "America's Got Talent" winner.

Where is Richard Goodall from?

Goodall is a 55-year-old elementary school janitor who lives in Terre Haute, Indiana. Goodall has reportedly worked in the same Western Indiana school district for 23 years, and can often be found singing in the halls while working.

'Music was the bridge' for Richard Goodall after losing his wife

Goodall grew up singing along to his RadioShack stereo and jumping on stage during karaoke nights in the '90s, per USA TODAY. He also performed with two gospel trios until the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Then in 2021, Goodall's wife, Patty,  died of cancer .

"When you're married for so long and they pass away and you've got that void there, your biggest concern is figuring out who you are without them," he  told the Indy Star in May. "And music was the bridge again."

Students would often tell Goodall how talented he was, per NBC. After a while, the janitor eventually started to believe them, so he boarded a plane for the first time to audition for the talent competition show.

Richard Goodall got married a week before the 'AGT' finale

The week before the finale,  Goodall married his fiancee , Angie Vanoven, with his "AGT" family in attendance. He announced  on Facebook  that they are now Richard and Angela VanGoodall.

Richard Goodall has gone viral before

In 2022, Goodall  went viral  for his rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'," which he performed at his students' graduation. A clip of the performance was  posted to TikTok  and has since amassed over 3 million views.

Journey even shared the clip on its  official TikTok account , and Goodall received a supportive comment from former frontman Steve Perry.

Richard Goodall is in a band

In addition to being an "AGT" winner, Goodall is the lead singer of a band called ManOpause. According to its Facebook page , the band performs “classic to current rock anthems that others just can’t play.”

What does Richard Goodall plan to do with the $1 million prize?

Goodall told the Indy Star he plans to put the $1 million prize toward a double-wide trailer. He plans to move the trailer to a senior living community in Florida and enjoy retirement, with the occasional pasta and seafood dinner.

"I'm not a fancy person," he said.

What did Richard Goodall sing on 'America's Got Talent'?

Here's a list of all the songs the "America's Got Talent" winner performed during season 19:

  • “Don't Stop Believin'” by Journey.
  • "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" by Michael Bolton.
  • "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor.
